Adam Profke Gold Coast Regional Manager Master Builders Queensland
It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2021 Gold Coast Awards winners’ magazine.
2021 was hailed as the year we’d say goodbye to COVID-19, leaving all the stress and drama wrought by the pandemic behind us.
As the year has progressed though, it’s become clear the challenges are far from over.
While the demand on our industry is a firstclass problem to have, the resulting trade and materials shortages and skyrocketing prices haven’t made things easy on anyone.
As always, we’re continuing to lobby hard for
Our esteemed judges were thrilled to be able to visit hundreds of amazing projects in person this year. Cementing the sterling reputation of the Awards, this year’s field once again surprised and delighted with the calibre, their superb finishes, and degree of difficulty in construction. As always, the judges were on the lookout for external appeal, siting and aspect, as well as amenities and aesthetics, not the styling or interior design.
The judges’ comments reflect this, with accolades such as “very unique,” “seamless,” “excellent use of materials,” “clean finishes,” “difficult site” and “great level of detail” are consistent.
For more than three decades, our Awards program has been and remains the pinnacle
Every Master Builders member is like family, and we pride ourselves on always having their back, whether that means being there in times of need, or celebrating their achievements. With our membership base surging close to 9,000 and growing daily, our experts are dedicated to helping continue to grow and future-proof businesses big and small, who deliver exceptional craftsmanship and service to their customers. It’s our honour and privilege to be a part of their success.
If you are considering building your dream home or diving in to that long-planned renovation, please consider this a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when you choose a Master Builder. Jewel in Gold Coast's Crown
The architectural and structural design of the Jewel project is unlike anything else on the Gold Coast in that its scale and unique geometric shape set it apart from its peers.
Drawing inspiration from the smoky Quartz crystals that were discovered in the region, Jewel is inspired by the crystalline volcanic hook that forms the underlying structure of the coastline.
Jewel towers are an example of Multiplex’s ability to exceed expectations, challenging themselves to find better ways of doing things and creating new solutions to complex problems.
The three towers were constructed simultaneously and stand 41, 47 and 34 levels high respectively, each boasting a distinctive glass curtain walling system.
A mezzanine basement across the site footprint accommodating 816 cars, and back of house areas.
A three-level podium includes the residential lobbies for towers one, two and three, the hotel lobby, five retail tenancies, conference room, casual restaurant, landscaped gardens and swimming pools.
Level two of each podium provide meeting rooms associated with the conference facilities, a day spa and associated back of house, recreation facilities to the hotel including gym and indoor swimming pool.
Level three of the podiums include the residential facilities with cinema, gym, sauna and steam rooms, function area, an outdoor beach front swimming pool with swim up bar and integrated landscaping, the first level of hotel rooms and a restaurant.
Multiplex takes the win for their stunning Jewel Residences changing the coast's stunning skyline and reinforcing its reputation as a tourism and investment hub.
8 | 2021 Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The sheer size of the 11,000 square metre site was a challenge. Being the first absolute beachfront development on the Gold Coast in more than 30 years, the project team had to work closely with local authorities taking into account traffic management in and around the area, protection of mature trees surrounding the site, as well as additional considerations due to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
"It took over 3 million man-hours, more than 80,000 cubic metres of concrete, 15,000 tonnes of reinforcement and 83,000 square metres of facade glazing to create each tower."
It took over three million man-hours, more than 80,000 cubic metres of concrete, 15,000 tonnes of reinforcement and 83,000 square metres of façade glazing to create each unique tower.
Works also included construction of a new perimeter sea wall and beachfront dune rejuvenation for Gold Coast City Council. Multiplex successfully delivered 505 apartments in total, and the warm shell for 169 hotel rooms.
Their relationship with all key stakeholders on the Jewel project was organised and professional at all times. Being a significant and iconic development, effective planning and open communication was integral to successful delivery of the project. Multiplex handed over Jewel on time and on budget.
The result is an iconic project set to rejuvenate the Gold Coast’s position as the world’s leading tourism hub.

When style and practicality combine
Boasting a beautiful façade, on-trend colour ways and a style which perfectly melds the modern day with yesteryear practicalities, is ‘The Southhampton’ by Choice Homes.
Entered into the Display Home from $250,000 up to $350,000 category at this year’s awards, The Southhampton exudes charm thanks to a well-considered floor plan and an inviting, open feel.
Testament to this home’s appeal, this is the second Southhampton to be built by Choice Homes, with the first being sold prior to opening as an operational display home.
“The very first clients to ever step inside bought the home,” said Choice Homes group marketing manager Ben Peasley.
“We were only days away from getting signage installed, with plans for it to be an operational display home for at least two years and it was sold.
“The team here at Choice are sure it’s a sign of things to come as the Southampton is fast becoming a favourite.”
This functional home includes four bedrooms, separate living, family and dining areas with a magnificent kitchen which features a modern splash back and incredible island bench to complete the home’s appeal.
Taking inspiration from previous builds, the team at Choice Homes wanted to create a
home that touched on the design cues, floor plan and inclusions their staff request when they build a home for themselves.
“We carefully selected key improvements over our existing range to create an incredible home that fits on today’s regular-sized block,” Ben said.
It is this innovative way of thinking which has seen Choice Homes continually transform, all while sticking true to their founding values.
“Over the past decade we’ve diversified our skill set, becoming a land developer of numerous highly successful and sought after communities within South-East Queensland,” Ben said.
“Being a land developer/builder has ensured Choice Homes never runs out of quality land for its multiple award-winning home and land packages.

Goris Co Projects rise to the challenge
Boasting a truly world class nature, Hi Smile’s Global Headquarters in Burleigh is a building which expresses sophistication to the highest proportions.
With Hi Smile’s co-founders and directors staunchly set on their vision for creating a space which was impeccable in finish and displayed the true essence of their operation, Goris Co Projects rose to the challenge, delivering a build which is nothing short of iconic.
Entered into the Refurbishment/ Renovation over $750,000 category, Hi Smile’s Headquarters raises the bar when it comes to office spaces which are as practical and functional as they are aesthetic.
“This is by far one of my favourite projects completed over the last 17 years,” managing director Greg Goris said.
“The project was worth $2.7 million and had to be completed in 13 weeks.
“We worked around the clock to make the deadline but also ensured the quality was next level.
“The Hi Smile team and brand are all about
quality, so we went above and beyond to ensure every aspect was a reflection of that.”
This high-end aesthetic has been achieved through the use of blackbutt timber on floors and walls, a custom balustrade, contrasting black features such as handrails, polished concrete floors, lighting track and acoustic panelling topped off with a warm light which sets the tone throughout the entire office.
The project comprises approximately 1400sqm of refurbished office space.
This includes a gym, café, amenities, openplan office space, science lab, photo shoot studios, conference and collaboration rooms, new tiered seating (which is a true standout of the project) and state-of-the-art technology, with their own ‘TV Wall’ which consists of nine screens joined together.
The Hi Smile team also created bathrooms with showers, lockers and zones for personal use to encourage the blend of work life balance.
18 | 2021 Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards PROFILE
Boasting their own in-house café and fulltime chef who cooks to order, plus a set menu solely for their team, this project was not your standard office space refurbishment.
The café and dining area leads out to the internal and external courtyard, which provides a seamless flow and truly displays Hi Smile’s desired essence of the building; to offer a space in which employees can live, exercise, be creative and ultimately, relax in.
Representing a paradigm shift in office refurbishment, Hi Smile’s Global Headquarters is a true testament to the Goris Co Projects team thanks to their unfaltering commitment to quality finishes and their collaborative approach to bringing their client’s dreams to life.
“The Hi Smile team and brand are all about quality, so we went above and beyond to ensure every aspect was a reflection of that.”

Villa Sunshine stuns with Hamptons feel
Achieving a feel of simplistic quality and thoughtful design is Dawson Constructions' entry into the Individual Home from $650,000 to $750,000 category in this year’s awards program, Villa Sunshine.
True to its name, Villa Sunshine boasts ample natural light thanks to its exposed vaulted ceilings and gable windows.
Architecturally designed, this striking threebedroom, two-bathroom custom new home is situated close to the beach.
The build included a new home, carport, garage, gate house, three external deck areas and an outdoor alfresco area, including a fully plumbed-in wet bar with barbecue across from the pool.
Every component of the home was built with the most appropriate materials due to its proximity to the ocean.
This very detailed building design included polished concrete floors throughout, multiple sets of large oversized cavity slider pocket doors and striking intricate details around every corner.
Taking a coastal Hamptons theme and
tweaking it for quintessential Queensland life, the home has a feeling of simplistic quality and the monochrome colour palette only enhances this.
And while the finish of Villa Sunshine is second-to-none, it is no surprise the team at Dawson Constructions has delivered such a stand-out build.
Thanks to Luke Dawson’s extensive experience in high-end construction, every element of his operation is overseen with immense precision and focus to ensure a remarkable result for his team and, most importantly, his clients.
“Our core team is small however each member of the team prides themselves on the quality of workmanship they produce and the superior service experience they deliver to the customer, an ethos I live and breathe,” Luke said.
“I handpick the trades and subcontractors we work with to ensure they deliver the same quality experience to the client and represent the Dawson Constructions QLD brand appropriately.”
Specialising in high-end renovations and custom new homes, Luke and his team has a clear focus on providing a bespoke build dedicated to quality workmanship and attention to detail, while also keeping budget and time in mind.
Villa Sunshine is indicative of this clear-cut focus and with Dawson Constructions set on their goal of helping to build a better Gold Coast, one project at a time, it seems standout projects like this one will only continue to be produced.

Lottery prize home packs a punch in the style stakes
The second lottery prize home completed by Davey Constructions for yourtown, raises the bar when it comes to blurring the lines between the indoors and the outdoors.
Boasting a modern barn style, the home features four bedrooms, a pool, media room, open-plan living and glorious outdoor entertainment areas.
Off-form concrete walls, polished concrete floors, Abodo timber cladding and a cohesive dark palette throughout add to the high-end feel of the home.
Featuring a MRA Design, the home is sprawled across acreage in Tallebudgera Valley and is nothing short of spectacular.
Comprising high-pitched ceilings that reach heights of more than five metres in some areas, the property perfectly illustrates understated elegance .
Large raked gable windows and expansive glass allows natural light to filter beautifully through the space.
This light and warmth offers a striking contrast to the home’s dark interior and exterior finishes.
The home’s interior includes high-end plumbing fixtures and fittings, exposed black beams, Fisher and Paykel kitchen appliances and a glorious suspended fireplace.
The all-black contemporary kitchen features Laminex fingerprint resistant Absolute Matte cabinetry.
Further sticking with the colour way, a 'Nero black' Laminan Ossida ceramic 12mm thick kitchen bench top was used to deliver a slimline, minimalistic feel.
The true hero of this prize home however has to be the off-form concrete pillars that support the high-pitched roof in the main living, dining and kitchen space.
Perfectly blending its stunning setting with cutting edge, high-end design and execution, Davey Constructions’ Prize Home Project is the epitome of luxury and modern style.
Davey Constructions’ entry into the Individual Home from $950,000 to $1.25 million category is the essence of quintessential acreage living.

When ingenuity and versatility combine
Showcasing their versatility, Clamroc Constructions entered three incredibly unique builds into this year's Housing & Construction Awards.
A family-based business, all three projects are testament to the company’s solutionbased approach which has seen them grow organically over the past nine years.
Entered into the Home Renovation/ Remodelling Project over $1 million category was the striking Tropez Terrace project.
Sitting on a 2125sqm block with 44 metres of canal frontage, this home features a 537sqm prestigious dwelling.
The east-facing residence includes four bedrooms, all with their own ensuite, a mudroom, powder room, formal dining, lounge, living, informal dining, kitchen with butler’s pantry and office, along with a separate guest house that adjoins a vast alfresco with a super-sized 10.5m pool alongside a full-sized tennis court.
Kooringal, located in Tallebudgera, is a breath-taking acreage property which was nominated in the Individual Home $950,000$1.25 million category.
Kooringal is thought to mean “Side of a Hill” in Wiradjuri aboriginal language, and that is exactly where this unique and unrivalled eastfacing modern masterpiece was built.
Designed by Travis Quinell, this five-bedroom, four-bathroom sensation is an entertainer’s dream with two separate wings for the owners and their guests.
One of the stand-out features is the illuminated alfresco area and tropical gardens containing a fully enclosed 56sqm poolside pavilion with aluminium louvres and an extensive 77,000L pure magnesium pool with solar blanket.
While keeping the cool winter valley in mind, there is also a fire pit with log seating for an evening of cosy entertaining. Capri was the third project entered
by Clamroc Constructions into this year's awards program. Capri is nestled in a quiet, modest cul-de-sac.
The single storey, Mediterranean-feel, coastal luxe home is positioned perfectly on the canal and has been built to withstand generations of families who love to entertain.
Consisting of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, powder room, theatre room, extensive alfresco with built-in pizza oven and a 10m pool that has enviable canal views, this 357sqm home built on 788sqm of land has been highly thought out.
All three striking projects perfectly display the attributes of passion, quality and unfaltering dedication which have now become synonymous with the Clamroc Constructions' brand.

The footprint of The Cottage is relatively small however, the home well and truly packs a punch once you enter.
Every room has been carefully considered, from the abundance of natural light to the cross ventilation of cool breezes, to the view from each window.
The breezes flow through the huge glass sliding cavity door and the custom aluminium louvres set up high into the walls.
The louvres and Velux skylights let in an enormous amount of natural light, increasing the feeling of space, whilst the oversized eaves shield the heat.
Boasting a business ethos that is as simple as it is successful, Ausgill Projects, commitment to “working directly with the customer through an honest and upfront approach” seems a winning formula.
Their projects are clear testament to this.

Shaping skylines and delivering iconic projects since 1962
Multiplex is proud, once again, to contribute to the Master Builders Queensland Awards with the iconic beachfront development, Jewel. Its sheer scale, complex delivery and striking geometric shape well-and-truly set it apart from its peers.
Multiplex have enjoyed a long history transforming cities across South-East Queensland. Over the last year they completed Jewel on the Gold Coast as well as ‘The One’ residential tower at 300 George Street in Brisbane, joining W Brisbane and 300 George Commercial Tower to complete the Brisbane Quarter precinct. Multiplex are also well under way working on future, city changing projects such as:
• Queen’s Wharf Integrated Resort Development – a world class entertainment and lifestyle precinct the city has never seen before, set to open its doors from late 2022.
• Destination Gold Coast’s Tower 2 - the fourth luxury hotel within the Broadbeach Island development alongside The Star Grand, The Darling and the rapidly progressing Dorsett.
They attribute their success to having the unique ability to think like their clients, ensuring integrated solutions that deliver exceptional quality and safety for their projects.
Jewel and its three crystalline towers is a great example of Multiplex’s ability to exceed expectations, challenging themselves to find better ways of doing things and creating new solutions to complex problems.
Exemplifying the ultimate expression in luxury and style, Jewel has redefined cutting edge architectural and structural design with these stunning, geometric towers completely transforming the coastline.
Towers 1, 2 and 3 were constructed simultaneously and stand 41, 47 and 34 levels high respectively, each boasting a distinctive glass curtain walling system inspired by three

smoky quartz crystals discovered in the region.
The sheer size of the 11,000sqm site was a challenge.
Being the first absolute beachfront development on the Gold Coast in more than 30 years, the project team had to work closely with local authorities taking into account traffic management in and around the area, protection of mature trees surrounding the site, as well as additional considerations due to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
It took more than three million man hours, more than 80,000 cubic metres of concrete, 15,000 tonnes of reinforcement, 83,000sqm of façade glazing and more to create each unique tower. Works also included construction of a new perimeter sea wall and beachfront dune rejuvenation for Gold Coast City Council.
Multiplex successfully delivered 505 apartments in total, and the warm shell for 169 hotel rooms.
Sticking true to their reputation
of consistently exceeding the expectations of clients and the industry in everything they do, Multiplex handed over Jewel on time and on budget.
The success of the project is
testament to Multiplex’s innovative thinking, entrepreneurial spirit and astute decision-making – the end result, a flagship development set to rejuvenate the Gold Coast’s position as the world’s leading tourism and investment location.

Unita raises health retreat to soaring new heights
This wellness destination is nothing short of spectacular, featuring state-of-the-art facilities built by Unita.
The Unita team delivered the construction and fit-out of 12 luxury cabins, a yoga pavilion, an outdoor deck featuring a freestanding stone fireplace, a high-end commercial kitchen and dining precinct, extensive civil works and site upgrades.
The result? A breathtaking hinterland haven. While every element of the retreat supports the concept of relaxation, the luxury cabins truly imbue an exceptional sense of warmth and elegance that encourages reflection and rejuvenation.
Taking inspiration from Eden’s picturesque landscape, each cabin features a unique
design that incorporates natural materials and tones.
The seamless infrastructure perfectly blends within the scenic location.
The suites feature private timber balconies, luxurious bathrooms and floor to ceiling windows that bathe the space in natural light.
Another perfectly executed space within the health retreat is the dining hall.
The spacious dining precinct features a statement emerald green wall, a discreet connecting door, unique lighting, bespoke joinery and a custom-built demonstration kitchen where guests can learn to recreate Eden’s nutritious food in a stylish light-filled environment.
Eden is the ultimate stress-free oasis, however, the project was not without its initial challenges.
COVID restrictions proved to be an ongoing hindrance – in addition, the project’s remote location required the Unita team to work with the 380-acre hinterland site, rather than against it.
This included triumphing over testing site conditions, such as no phone reception and limited site access points, to achieve outstanding results.
With stunning bespoke joinery crafted inhouse by Unita Manufacturing and design work completed by Collectivus, Unita was able to deliver a project that truly takes health and wellness to new, luxurious heights.
Nestled deep inside the Gold Coast hinterland is the newly renovated, Eden Health Retreat.

When art takes the lead
Inspired by the principles of the Netherlands-based De Stijl movement, Turvey Constructions’ entry into this year’s awards program is a true illustration of art taking the lead.
The home is a modernist take on the popular barn-house style, making use of striking Colorbond cladding, blackbutt timber and stone.
The project was conceived as a simple enough renovation which eventuated into a knockdown and re-build.
Logistically, the build was not without its challenges.
“The design of the house went through many iterations in order to fit within the block while maximising natural light and the second-story views,” director Travis Turvey said.
“This left us with very little room to work with in some areas, and some landscaping challenges, but the team really did a fantastic job.”
Structurally the home boasts LVL framing, a relatively new and underutilised product from Dindas however, one which was integral in achieving the client’s desired vision.
“We collaborated heavily with Dindas during the planning and construction phase and were very pleased by the benefits the LVL framing
offered; it’s light weight, strong, and durable,” Travis said.
Concealed gutters were a key feature required to achieve the desired style for the client, along with the mono-stringer stairs complete with shelving and lightbox, and entry cladding with a concealed door.
The end result is a striking and bespoke build which perfectly melds the client’s love of art with the high-end finish now synonymous with the Turvey Constructions brand.

Form and beauty combine
Tawarri embraces the surrounding natural reserve of Burleigh Heads’ Koala Park and draws on various mid-century design inspirations to deliver a responsive and inspiring Gold Coast home.
Tawarri is the result of JTECH and Keil’s determination to create a visual narrative that controls the viewer’s gaze. They succeeded.
As people approach the home, they're met with architectural lines that sit tall in the saddle of the street, floating boldly in black, invitingly adorned with a hanging garden over the entryway. This exterior sharpness is combated by the surrounding landscaping and a soft and organic interior that strikes a balance between both masculinity and femininity.
As well as directing viewers’ sightlines, these elemental considerations were necessary in Tawarri’s ambition to encourage interior journeys and the spatial self-expression that is fostered by fluidity between all spaces of the home – fluidity that can only be achieved through functionality.
"As we’ve learned during the pandemic and through increased time sequestered in our homes, spaces that provide opportunity for retreat and disconnection can be of equal
importance to the open plan, shared zones of connection," JTECH director Josh Torney said. "Tawarri, positioned around a central courtyard and pool, thoughtfully approaches this dichotomy and allows residents the luxury of play – to open the home and utilise adjoining spaces as one, or to close them off to make more intimate sanctuaries."
No area of Tawarri spells sanctuary more than the master bedroom, separated from the rest of the home and accessed by a bridge set high in the void overlooking the main living area. Much like the black structure above the suspended polished concrete cantilever, the bridge continues a motif of floating.
As both JTECH and Keil have expressed, the architectural form intends to serve an ethos of lightness, evoking a state of repose as one wanders from room to room.
This sensation is no doubt assisted by the sun, no matter its position in the sky, no matter the season, throwing warm hues over the natural timber and stone, brick, concrete, rattan and linen.
The range of materials used in Tawarri speak to the vibrant vernacular of contemporary coastal living in Australia, and once compiled through considered design and craftsmanship, allow the home to both stand out and stand with its natural and adjacent urban settings.
JTECH Design & Construct collaborates with Reece Keil Design to create both a dramatic and humble monument to modern coastal living.
