Master Builders go above and beyond in 2021

REFLECTING on 2021 so far, the first thing that springs to mind is a rollercoaster ride — and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the building and construction industry who wouldn’t agree that’s how it feels.
While we are all keen to put the tough times of the last 19 months behind us, this year has thrown up fresh challenges in the form of trade and materials shortages and cost hikes. At the same time, builders and trade contractors are continuing to keep pace with the welcome demand born out of government stimulus, record interstate migration and low interest rates, as well as dealing with the ever-present threat of lockdowns and changes to border restrictions.
We’ve celebrated some wins as we’ve navigated the twists and turns, such as successfully lobbying the Queensland government to introduce the Accelerated Builder Consumer Dispute (ABCD) framework, helping builders and consumers if things go wrong through no fault of their own. Right now, we’re continuing talks to take this to another level, through a permanent rapid dispute resolution process for the residential sector, similar to what’s available to commercial builders.
Despite these unprecedented conditions, our industry continues to fare better than many others — and it’s our members’ drive, skill and determination to push the boundaries of what’s possible that is helping to ensure our continued success and viability in both the
residential and commercial sectors, now and into the future.
It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2021 Queensland Awards winners’ magazine.
For more than 30 years, our widely lauded Awards program has been regarded as an opportunity for the industry to step back, reflect on the results of their hard work, and get recognition from their peers for their stellar efforts, as well as the communities who benefit.
The Awards cater for entrants ranging from apprentices to trade contractors and small family businesses to the biggest names in the industry. The efforts of individuals are also an important focus, from apprentices, to women leading the way in the industry, and builders showing the promise of a long and exciting future ahead.
Whether a winner or not, their craftsmanship is a credit to the Master Builders name, and each of them is a part of our family. We pride ourselves on always having their back, whether that means being there in times of need, or celebrating their achievements.
It’s our members who provided the inspiration for the theme of our 2021 Queensland Housing & Construction Awards program — Above & Beyond. The projects they’ve brought to life this year prove they continue to soar to new heights.
Our respected and experienced judges were thrilled to inspect hundreds of amazing
projects once again. This year’s field surprised and delighted with the calibre, their superb finishes, and degree of difficulty in construction. As always, the panel was on the lookout for external appeal, siting and aspect, as well as amenities and aesthetics, not the styling or interior design.
This year’s field is one of the most diverse we’ve seen. From stunning renovations and beautiful new homes, to important community, education, healthcare and tourism facilities, and soaring residential and business towers inspiring the imagination — there’s nothing Master Builders can’t accomplish.
With our membership base surging close to 9,000 and growing daily, our experts are dedicated to helping continue to future-proof businesses big and small.
If you are considering building your dream home or diving in to that long-planned renovation, please consider this a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when you choose a Master Builder. Get in touch with one of the award winners featured here directly or use our Find a Master Builder search at www.mbqld.com.au.
On behalf of Master Builders, congratulations on your success. I thank you for supporting the 2021 Housing & Construction Awards program.

with its butler’s pantry offers a sumptuous pairing of contrasting colours to its cabinetry that run seamlessly into the ceiling. The inclusion of top-of-the-range appliances such as integrated fridges and freezers (to both kitchen and butler’s pantry), wine fridges, coffee machine, warming drawer, steam oven, pyrolytic oven, dishwashers and induction cooktop add a touch of luxury. Continuity to the spaces is in abundance with a large, fixed glass window to the BBQ area opening onto the servery.
Designed to maximise Queensland’s indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, expansive stacker doors open to the centrally located alfresco which functions as a fully closed internal room or an open outdoor space. Boasting a built-in BBQ, numerous fridges and an entertainment system including a large wall mounted TV, this functional space really is a gateway to entertaining guests in style.
Stepping down a level, there is a generous sized entertainment area where the picturesque scenery and views to Moreton Island can be enjoyed. The poolside deck surrounds the luxurious L-shaped pool with jets, LED lighting and a large horizon pool window with a swim-up poolside bar. This area also boasts a twenty-person under roof heated spa.

The Grand Porte-cochère offers an immense sense of arrival taking advantage of the hip scissor trusses and four metre raked ceilings beautifully finished with feature timber and soft shadow lines. Rich timber posts flow onto Bluesteel Stackstone over the brick pillars. The extra wide roof eaves are elegantly finished in Tahira White and Woodland Grey, while exposed rafters are featured throughout the design’s exterior.
The long, covered walkway offers more stunning detail, including the ceiling and stained timber decking underfoot that leads onto the rotunda. With continuity in mind, this space mirrors the Portecochère with the addition of water features, fish, turtles and waterlilies.
Guided by the lush tropical landscaping, merbau feature timber and the convict recycled brickwork completes the journey onto the porch.

The cabinetry and shelving give a subtle nod to the custom entry door with the selection of smoked mirror glass and stone tops to complement its beauty.
An internal brick feature wall houses a generous gas fireplace and recycled timber mantel and invites you on into the dining and sitting areas which flow on into the kitchen.

Multiplex takes the win for their stunning Jewel Residences, changing the coast’s stunning skyline and reinforcing its reputation as a tourism and investment hub.
concrete, 15,000 tonnes of reinforcement and 83,000 square metres of façade glazing to create each unique tower.
Works also included construction of a new perimeter sea wall and beachfront dune rejuvenation for Gold Coast City Council.
Multiplex successfully delivered 505 apartments in total, and the warm shell for 169 hotel rooms. Their relationship with all key stakeholders on the Jewel project was organised and professional at all times. Being a significant and iconic development, effective planning and open communication was integral to the successful delivery of
the project. Multiplex handed over Jewel on time and on budget.
The result is an iconic project set to rejuvenate the Gold Coast’s position as the world’s leading tourism hub.
The architectural and structural design of the Jewel project is unlike anything else on the Gold Coast in that its scale and unique geometric shape set it apart from its peers.
Drawing inspiration from the smoky Quartz crystals that were discovered in the region, Jewel is inspired by the crystalline volcanic hook that forms the underlying structure of the coastline.
Jewel towers are an example of Multiplex’s ability to exceed expectations, challenging themselves to find better ways of doing things and creating new solutions to complex problems.
The three towers were constructed simultaneously and stand 41, 47 and 34 levels high respectively, each boasting a distinctive glass curtain walling system.
A mezzanine basement across the site footprint accommodates 816 cars, and back of house areas.
A three-level podium includes the residential lobbies for towers one, two and three, the hotel lobby, five retail tenancies, conference room, casual restaurant, landscaped gardens and
swimming pools.
Level two of each podium provides meeting rooms associated with the conference facilities, a day spa and associated back of house, as well as recreation facilities to the hotel, including a gym and indoor swimming pool.
Level three of the podiums include the residential facilities with cinema, gym, sauna and steam rooms, function area, an outdoor beachfront swimming pool with swim up bar and integrated landscaping, the first level of hotel rooms and a restaurant.
The sheer size of the 11,000 square metre site was a challenge. Being the first absolute beachfront development on the Gold Coast in more than 30 years, the project team had to work closely with local authorities taking into account traffic management in and around the area, protection of mature trees surrounding the site, as well as additional considerations due to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
It took over three million man-hours, more than 80,000 cubic metres of

Natural light floods the dining and living room through extra-large windows. A feature fireplace of matching French pattern travertine tiling to the external walls takes centre stage.
Opposite in the living space is a gourmet kitchen with a hidden butler’s pantry.
A centrally located media room separates the master suite from the remaining three bedrooms. The suite is pure luxury with his and hers Hollywood-style walk-in-robe, and lavish ensuite featuring twin basins and walk-in shower.
There is also a separate powder room,
laundry, double garage and study nook, as well as the main bathroom with wet room style layout including free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

Transforming cities, shaping skylines and bringing landmark projects to life
Multiplex has enjoyed a long history shaping the built environment across Queensland for over 40 years.
Over the past year Multiplex has completed Jewel on the Gold Coast — recently awarded 2021 Gold Coast Project of the Year, Residential Building (high-rise over 3 storeys) over $20 million and Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety in the Master Builders
Queensland regional awards, and named a finalist in the upcoming State awards.
Multiplex also completed ‘The One’ residential tower at 300 George Street in Brisbane, joining W Brisbane and 300 George Commercial Tower to create Brisbane Quarter.
Multiplex continues to strengthen its
significant track record with other landmark projects well underway including:
• Queen’s Wharf Integrated Resort Development — a monumental, world class entertainment and lifestyle precinct the city has never seen before.
• Destination Gold Coast’s Tower 2 — the fourth luxury hotel within the Broadbeach Island development which on completion will be one of the largest integrated resorts on the Gold Coast.
• The Centre for National Resilience Brisbane — Queensland’s purpose-built
quarantine facility and a significant piece of Australia’s national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Key to Multiplex’s success is a culture of outperformance and the determination to exceed the expectations of clients and the broader industry in everything it does.
It takes a deeply collaborative approach with clients, working together at the outset of every project to collectively identify challenges, create integrated solutions, and deliver exceptional quality and best in class safety across all projects.
Jewel is a great example of Multiplex’s ability to bring to life cutting edge architectural and structural design through engineering and construction excellence.
An expansive 11,000 square metre site and the first absolute beachfront development in more than three decades required meticulous planning and partnership with local authorities, and public and private stakeholders to ensure smooth traffic management, protection of mature trees surrounding the site, as well as additional considerations due to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The three, smoky quartz inspired towers were constructed simultaneously and stand 41, 47 and 34 levels high respectively taking over three million man hours, more than 80,000 cubic metres of concrete and 83,000 square metres of façade glazing to deliver the landmark development.
Works also included construction of a new perimeter sea wall and beachfront dune rejuvenation for Gold Coast City Council.
Multiplex successfully delivered a three level podium, the warm shell for 169 five star hotel suites and 512 one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments and premium residences on time and on budget. The development features three levels of basement parking to accommodate 812 cars.
Other features include separate residence and hotel lobbies, five luxury retail tenancies, world class business amenities, resort style swimming pools, private bars and casual and fine dining restaurants.
Remaining true to its reputation of consistently exceeding the expectations of clients and the industry in everything they do, Jewel’s delivery is testament to Multiplex’s ethos of going beyond what is required and finding more powerful ways of doing things for their clients, communities and beyond.
High-end apartment living takes a new shape
Winning the Residential Building (high-rise over 3 storeys) up to $20 million category in this year’s Brisbane awards program was 5Point Projects with Obsidian Apartments in Teneriffe.
and to get the award at a regional level in Brisbane which is incredibly competitive was such great industry recognition for us all.
“The building certainly gets us a lot of attention which is great, it’s quite a topic.
“It comes up when talking with new clients and contractors, they often say ‘you were the one who did that submarine project’.”
When speaking with Damian the immense pride he has in the project and his team who helped deliver it is evident, stating that such an award is a win for all who were involved.
“The team, the subbies, the contractors, we all hoped it was going to turn out the way it did and when the concept perfectly came together and we delivered it, we all felt we were winners really.”
And while Obsidian is a unique, signature project for the team, it is at home amongst other standout buildings constructed by 5Point Projects.
The company aims to deliver boutique-style customer focus that results in tailored delivery solutions.
“We want our clients to feel engaged and valued throughout the whole life of the project delivery process, not just being courted until contract signing then left hoping
they have a robust building contract to fall back on.
“Our company vision invokes a collaborative culture, one that values relationships and importantly leads by example by doing what you say you will do.”
After being a part of the construction landscape for 30 years, Damian said his favourite part of the industry is people working in teams to accomplish a common goal.
“In our case it is a building that stands tall and proud and will do so as legacy of that achievement for years to come.”
Having delivered and secured contracts in excess of $250 million in the last five years, the future is focused on looking ahead and ensuring clients continue to benefit from their collaborative tailored services and that they continue to deliver high quality projects.
And for Damian, this extends into every area of the business.
“This means rather than looking at growth targets, I am focussed on improving our services offering and being more strategic with the projects we deliver.
“I believe our business is at a great size where I can have the personal impact and interaction with our clients and supply chain, whilst importantly giving support and opportunity to our own employees to become the best version of themselves, which was my original vision when founding 5Point.”
This striking building features 13 three- and four-bedroom apartments and caught the eye of Managing Director Damian Dove instantly.
“When I first saw the initial design for Obsidian, I thought this was the perfect example of a bespoke up-market building whilst being very technically challenging to construct,” he said.
“This emulated what 5Point stands for; we are different, we are innovative, we embrace challenge, and we want to leave a positive impact on our industry.”
As is always the case with a striking, one-of-akind building, the process is far from straightforward however, this is an area in which the 5Poiont team excels and Obsidian perfectly illustrates this.
“When you have a building that is not the traditional ‘square box’ shape the challenges are numerous, as there is no typical floor layout, no typical structural connections, no typical façade details you can call upon,” Damian said.
“We had to work from first principles and break down the elements to ensure that we could support each floor and span the full width of the building.
“We were also concerned about water
proofing to the façade where it adjoined the neighbouring building, so we decided the best outcome to ensure engineering integrity and keep the curvature inside and out was to utilise pre-cast concrete panels and design a curved truss to enclose the roof.”
And while the cylindrical shape of the building presented many challenges, it is well-and-truly the hero element.
This is further enhanced by the ‘Submarine’ themed external façade. The reflection of the curvature to the perimeter walls and exposed truss creating the open high-level ceilings sets this building apart from all others in its class.
For Damian, a building such as this was a first and one he feels will redefine the apartmentliving space in Brisbane.
“I have never seen, let alone built another building with a similar design, particularly not for a fully optioned luxury residential apartment development,” he said.
“It is the perfect statement of a bespoke building in a trending suburb within Brisbane’s
inner CBD.”
For Damian and his team, winning this award has further reiterated the exceptional nature of the project.
“It was a really big deal for us win this award as the project isn’t one of the larger ones that some of our industry peers tend to do, but it’s the uniqueness of the building which makes it so special,” Damian said.
“We were up against such long standing competitors in long standing companies,

Design-led thinking takes centre stage — naturally
When it comes to standing out in the construction landscape, employing a keen attention to detail, and having a true love for your craft is paramount.
Luckily, for Tyson Dalziell of TyStyle Construction, these elements come naturally.
TyStyle has been in business since 2013 and started due to Tyson’s passion for creating beautiful homes.
Since then, Tyson’s hands-on approach, design-led thinking, attention to detail and love of timber craftmanship has seen his business flourish.
TyStyle Construction’s entry into this year’s Housing & Construction Awards once again reiterates the company’s standing as specialists in custom construction.
The Mill Residence was a knockdown rebuild in the leafy green suburb of Buderim, with the seamless integration between indoor and outdoor living a key focus.
The modern coastal-style home consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, media room, rumpus, study, a large kitchen with a supporting butler’s pantry and a freshwater pool.
3,500 bricks from the original house were hand cleaned to reuse in two of the internal feature walls and the front brick fence to pay homage to the old house that once stood in its place.
The timber trusses from the old house were also salvaged and used as the bearers underneath the spotted gum deck that
surrounds the pool area.
The modern coastal theme of the house was a combination of Tyson and Maddie’s love of barn style homes found in the countryside of New Zealand and the coastal lifestyle enjoyed on the Sunshine Coast.
Although the home boasts a neutral colour scheme, recycled brick walls, various cladding options and custom timber features throughout adds a sense of calm whilst providing flexibility in terms of styling options.
A true stand-out of the project is the 4.5 metre feature gable ceiling with clerestory windows and the 1.8-metrelong skylight over the ensuite shower, enhancing the understated elegance which is present all throughout the home.
An exercise in capturing and utilising natural elements and incorporating sustainability wherever possible, The Mill Residence celebrates
all there is to love about the Queensland lifestyle and perfectly illustrates the impeccable attention to detail of TyStyle Construction.
Inspiring approach
When approached to discuss the recent successes of Lory Construction, the modesty and hesitation from both Director Nick Lory and General Manager Cam McRae is quite evident.
Lory Construction, established in 2015 has had consistent year-on-year growth, received multiple industry awards, and built a reputation to be proud of.
However, both gentlemen declined to boast, and rather talk about more pressing issues in the industry, and life in general.
A family owned and orientated business, Lory Construction has always had a focus on philanthropy and giving back to the community.
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and associated impact, supporting those within the construction industry and greater community has become forefront of Lory Constructions’ ideology.
“Our focus for 2021/2022 is to solidify our partnerships with Mates in Construction, and also Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Mr Lory said.
“Over recent years, we have liaised with Mates in Construction for various training and support programs however, have officially partnered as a Tier 3 supporter for 2021/2022.”
“Also, our target is to raise $10,000 for MakeA-Wish Foundation in 2021, with the hope to improve further next year.”
It is this dedication to Industry and Community well-being that is the hallmark of Lory Constructions’ endurability, as they continue to provide inspiration during these challenging times.
Elegance epitomised
For Mark and Jodie Hughes of Hughes Elite Builders, taking out two winning titles in the Downs & Western Awards was recognition of their hard work and commitment to quality.
‘Project Lakeview’ won the Display Home over $550,000 and Best Bathroom category for the region.
“We were incredibly proud to win — and just couldn’t believe we had won our selective category, then to go on and take out the best bathroom award was a dream come true,” Jodie said.
“We put the home in not expecting a win but to have a good night with our tradespeople and employees who have helped us along the way.
“We were thrilled with the win as there was definitely tough competition on the night.”
Project Lakeview is an elegant masterpiece which evokes a tropical, high-end feel and most importantly, speaks to the attention to detail employed by the Hughes Elite team.
“We are a family-owned business which started in 2015 doing minor renovations and new homes, we are now in our sixth year of trading and we do 90% new home builds and are very well established in local market,”
Jodie said.
“We often get compliments about what genuine people we are, and we strive to give every single customer the quality they deserve on their new builds and renovations.”
Home reimagined Raising the bar, every time
Designing a home for a narrow block can prove quite the challenge however, for Phil Mills of G M Coastal Developments, it was a challenge he was more than prepared for when delivering the stunning ‘Ruby 11.
“My aim was to design a home to maximize the 15-metre-wide block and address issues our new world faces, typically parcel delivery and security,” Phil said.
“My first point of difference when studying the dynamics of the narrow block was why society feels that the entrance door is front and centre, which creates a corridor of waste through the centre of the dwelling?”
“I came up with the solution by taking the main entrance to the side of the building, this created the opportunity to capture a visitor’s imagination straight away by adding a wow factor down the side of the property.”
Removing this corridor of waste allowed space for the main ensuite, WIR and office. This innovative thinking completely brought
the project to life and outside of this inventive concept, the pool is undoubtedly this home’s hero piece.
Designed for Queensland living, the pool boasts a bench seat with an air bed installed, giving a Jacuzzi effect.
Inside the property, the building comprises
three bedrooms and four bathrooms, with spacious dining and living spaces.
Ingenuity and innovation were a true centerpiece of this home’s design and this Peregian Springs masterpiece is a clear indication of the striking yet functional concepts the G M Coastal Developments team can achieve.
With a business mantra of “Do it once. Do it right”, it’s no wonder Kev Morris Builder Pty Ltd has established itself as a company you can trust to get the job done to the highest of standards.
With a focus on new homes in the residential sector around Toowoomba and the Downs, Kev Morris Builder Pty Ltd has forged its reputation by offering quality ‘Adaptable Living Homes’.
‘Katoomba Vista’, which won for Kev and his team at the Downs & Western Awards, required them to tackle a host of challenges as they demolished an existing house on a sloped block, created a large cut and retain for the new house site and then completed the luxurious three-storey home (with its own elevator) at Prince Henry Heights.
With too many standout features to list, Kev and his team are immensely proud of the end result.
“The main living area has a 5.2m-high raked ceiling with the window wall to the east making the area feel huge — and with plenty
of natural light coming into the room, it makes the home feel warm and fresh,” Kev said.
“From the study/retreat, the owners can see over neighbouring homes and enjoy unimpeded views down the valley and beyond the mountain ranges.”
Champion in its field
Wowing the judges with its sheer scale and striking architectural design, the Faith Lutheran College Sports Complex is a clear illustration of Bedford Built’s experience in the commercial construction industry.
For company director Matthew Bedford, winning the award for Sporting Facilities in the Downs & Western region offered clear recognition of his team’s advancement in an incredibly competitive industry.
“It was a great feeling of accomplishment to win,” Matthew said.
“The award signifies the company’s progression within the industry and is a testament to our ability to deliver projects of that scale.”
The new Faith Sports Centre provides staff, students and the broader school community with access to world-class indoor sports facilities, including two multi-use courts, a gymnasium, three classrooms, amenities,
storage facilities and sports office.
Completed to a championship level with extensive architectural features, the end result speaks to the superior levels of client service and collaboration offered by the Bedford Built team.
The company has been in business for over
eight years and boasts experience across a multitude of industry sectors.
With plans to expand throughout Queensland, whilst continuing to maintain superior client service and staff gratification, the team at Bedford Built look to the future with optimism and anticipation.

A well-respected family business, current managing director Tim Waring was thrilled to win the Individual Home from $550,000 up to $650,000 category at the Downs & Western Awards.
“There is a great sense of pride in building someone a new home and to win an award is just an added benefit,” Tim said.
When it comes to the secret to Arden Vale’s success, Tim and his 13-strong team put it down to their unfaltering client-centric approach.
“We offer a completely unique system that delivers on quality, time and client satisfaction,” he said.
The winning home ‘Moncrieff Close’ wowed the judges thanks to its impeccable design and contemporary feel.
“This home has an integrated panel-lift door matching the house cladding, an open void to entry with mono stringer stairs and a kitchen fit for a chef,” Tim said.
“We are truly proud of such an outstanding modern home — ‘Moncrieff Close’.”
With big plans on the horizon for Tim and his team to continue to refine their business offering, it seems the biggest winners of all will be Arden Vale Homes’ many valued customers.
Style and function combines Designer family living
Perfectly melding style and functionality, the Stradbroke 32, constructed by Porter Davis Homes, maximises liveability and lifestyle and utilises the home’s floor plan to its best ability.
Winning the Display home from $450,000 up to $550,000 at the Brisbane awards, the Stradbroke 32 impressed the judges on many fronts.
The open layout of the Stradbroke 32 is highlighted with reference to the design challenge of maximising on natural light and spaciousness, while fitting on a 12.5m wide block of land.
There is emphasis on colour selection and interior styling, perfectly selling the quintessential Queensland dream.
Boasting three separate living areas, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a powder

The cohesive colour choices throughout the home can be found in every room, from the Silestone benches to brushed gold light fixtures.

such accomplishments have become par-forthe-course for the Porter Davis Homes team over the years.
With big plans in the pipeline for the coming five years, Porter Davis Homes is excited to continue their expansion in the Southeast Queensland market and further establish themselves as a major national builder.
Winning the Individual Home from $350,000 up to $450,000 category at this year’s Brisbane awards was the stunning Holland Park project home, The ‘Trinity’ by Transpire Constructions.

With generous spaces on both levels that include an expansive open-plan living area, a formal lounge room and a study nook, the Trinity aims to satisfy family living in Brisbane’s suburbia.
Celebrating all there is to love about life in sunny Queensland, the Trinity perfectly combines sophistication with ambience and tranquillity. The large open-plan kitchen, living
and dining are the centrepiece of the home, with grand sliding glass doors opening onto alfresco living.
A modern kitchen with a large waterfall end Nickel Stone island-bench, Cuban Wood and Mist Grey cabinetry with 900mm appliances ooze elegance.
Walking through to the alfresco, you are welcomed by peaceful views of the picturesque pool designed with gorgeous white ceramic tiles and pebble interior.
This relaxed Zen zone with luxury outdoor living further helps to enhance the home’s overall tranquillity.
An eye for detail Meeting needs are an awardwinner
For the team at Cavanough Builders, taking out the top spot in the Commercial Building up to $5 million category at the Downs & Western Awards is confirmation that their hands-on approach and impeccable attention to detail is a true winning formula.
Avenue Motel Apartments in Toowoomba is a testament to the team’s excellence, consisting of 16 fully self-contained shortstay apartments — including two disabled apartments fully equipped to comply to AS1470 standards — as well as a gym, library, and two-bedroom managers’ residence.
According to administrator Belinda Cavanough, it is the unfaltering attention to detail employed throughout the build which has seen her team achieve such success.
“This is recognition of the excellence of our work, reflected by the execution of the details and process that was required to construct this type of building,” Belinda said.
“We are both hands-on people and this is reflected in the relationships we have built with our suppliers, tradespeople, contractors and clients.”
With a key focus on bringing clients’ dreams
to life, whether it be in the commercial, residential, or renovation sectors, Cavanough Builders continues to raise the bar when it comes to quality designs complete with firstclass workmanship.
Taking out two winning titles at the Sunshine Coast and North Queensland Awards programs was Total Construction.
The Kennards Self Storage Facility at Baringa earned the team top spot in the Sunshine Coast’s Industrial Building over $5 million category.
Designed around the specific needs of the current local self-storage market, these two new two-storey buildings cover 5,800m2 of floor area and provide 440 individual storage units.
Serviced by a lift in each building purposefully located to allow minimum travel for the tenants and their belongings, clever planning, considered design choices and innovative
approaches were key elements of the project.
The second winning project for the Total team was the Kubirri Aged Care Centre in Mossman.
The Kubirri Aged Care Centre was designed around the specific local needs of the aged care residents and their families.
This sustainable design is based on a “Home
in a Garden” theme and provides an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for residents with connection to the surrounding environment and overall landscape.
Winning such awards is confirmation for the Total Construction team that they are leaders in the field of innovative construction solutions across a wide-range of aged care, health, commercial and industrial sectors.

“The awards support our values which are tied tightly to the craftsmanship and work ethic of our business and all of our team buy in to these core values.
“We continually strive to improve our business by undertaking coaching and mentoring, training our staff and developing our carpentry team into not just carpenters but builders of the future.”
Winning House of the Year, Individual Home from $450,000 up to $550,000, Best Residential Bathroom and the Trevor Mustey Perpetual Award for Quality Workmanship for their resort-style creation, Windermere House, the results speak to the company’s incredible standing in the industry.
According to Director Rob Rule, his team’s incredible performance in the 2021 awards program signifies the belief that he and coowner Cameron McInnes have in the building ability of their team.
“As a small bespoke building company, it was amazing that we were so successful at this year’s Regional Awards,” Rob said.
“We knew that our project was unique and a beautiful home, and we knew the hard work and effort that was involved in this project from start to finish.
“We were hopeful that the judging panel could see how this home was different to standard building in Townsville, starting with the custom design, fixtures and finishes through to the craftsmanship that brought the build to life.
“Our whole team was very excited that we received not just the nominated category award, but two of the highest honours of the night with the Trevor Mustey Perpetual Award for Quality Workmanship, which we also won back in 2018, and the House of the Year Award.
“For us it was a fantastic result that we are all
very proud of.”
Windermere House wowed the judges with its impeccable attention to detail and unique features, elements of the project Rob and his team went above and beyond to achieve.
“We nominated this home as we knew it was unique for the Townsville area,” Rob said.
“It wasn’t the largest home.
“It didn’t have views to the horizon.
“It was a unique home with a holistic view to its design and construction techniques, which enabled both the designer and us as builders to express ourselves and show there are alternatives to standard building practice in Townsville and we have the team to deliver exceptional craftsmanship and unique homes.”
The project owner and client, Natasha, has a strong working relationship with the Reef Coast Constructions team and is a director of AREI Designs.
Rob said her input was instrumental in the final, stunning result.
“Natasha designed her own home and we have a strong working relationship with AREI
Designs, having worked with them on other new home projects and they have been key to helping us provide the best in design and construction for our clients.”
No strangers to success in the regional Master Builders awards, Reef Coast Constructions unique client experience and hands-on approach has been a key cornerstone to their immense success.
“Our clients constantly provide feedback to us that Reef Coast Constructions makes their building journey easy compared to others they may have been in contact with,” Rob said.
“We are a very client centric business and with two qualified builders at the helm, we provide a unique client experience that is not commonly seen in Townsville.
“Prospective clients deal directly with me, the owner and builder, from the first meeting about their new home and not with a salesperson, so we can help them achieve the
With Brodyee Filleul of Reef Coast Constructions taking out the North Queensland Apprentice of the Year title, it seems this commitment to upskilling and mentoring of their staff is well-and-truly paying off.
Representing a paradigm shift in office refurbishment
Boasting a truly world class nature, Hi Smile’s Global Headquarters in Burleigh is a building which expresses sophistication to the highest proportions.
studios, conference and collaboration rooms, new tiered seating which is a true stand-out of the project and state of the art technology, with their own ‘TV Wall’ which consists of nine screens joined together.
The Hi Smile team also created bathrooms with showers, lockers and zones for personal use to encourage the blend of work life balance.
Boasting their own in-house café and full time chef who cooks to order, plus a set menu solely for their team, this project was not your standard office space refurbishment.
The café and dining area leads out to the internal and external courtyard, which provides a seamless flow and truly displays Hi Smile’s desired essence of the building; to offer a space in which employees can live, exercise, be creative and ultimately, relax in.
Representing a paradigm shift in office refurbishment, Hi Smile’s Global Headquarters is a true testament to the Goris Co Projects team thanks to their unfaltering commitment to quality finishes and their collaborative approach to bringing their clients’ dreams to life.
With Hi Smile’s co-founders and directors staunchly set on their vision for creating a space which was impeccable in finish and displayed the true essence of their operation, Goris Co Projects rose to the challenge, delivering a build which is nothing short of iconic.
Winning the Refurbishment/Renovation over $750,000 category in the Gold Coast awards program, Hi Smile’s Headquarters raises the bar when it comes to office spaces which are as practical and functional as they are aesthetic.
“This is by far one of my favourite projects completed over the last 17 years,” Managing Director Greg Goris said.
“The project was worth $2.7 million and had to be completed in 13 weeks.
“We worked around the clock to make the
deadline but also ensured the quality was next level.
“The Hi Smile team and brand are all about quality, so we went above and beyond to ensure every aspect was a reflection of that.”
This high-end aesthetic has been achieved through the use of black butt timber on floors and walls, a custom balustrade, contrasting black features such as handrails, polished concrete floors, lighting track and acoustic panelling topped off with a warm light which sets the tone throughout the entire office.
The project comprises approximately 1400m2 of refurbished office space. This includes a gym, café, amenities, openplan office space, science lab, photo shoot
Celebrating quintessential Queensland living
A dream home in every sense of the phrase, Karibu House maximises the home’s footprint to offer breathtaking views, whilst not skimping on functionality for everyday family living.
This stunning residence boasts the Sunshine Coast’s Best Residential Pool, as awarded in the regional Master Builders program and also took out the top spot in the Individual Home from $950,000 up to $1.25 million category.
The home is focused around seamless indoor and outdoor living, and this is achieved through the use of expansive sliding glass doors and large windows, allowing ease of access between the two spaces and most importantly, framing the stunning outside views from within the property.
Other standout features of this entry include the HEKA Hoods on the front façade which add a sleek, modern style whilst also providing all-important protection from the elements.
The Corten steel sheeting used for the front fence and landscaping once again enhances the home’s desired aesthetic, whilst also serving a practical purpose.
As with any Queensland home, it is hard to go past the pool as a standout element of the
property and in the instance of Karibu House, it is certainly no different.
The jewel of this stunning home features a cantilevered polished concrete slab around the swimming pool which truly packs a punch in the wow-factor stakes.
And while this stunning property has showcased the incredible skills of the Blackhaus Construction team, there is still plenty on the agenda for this growing operation in the years to come.
Specialising in one off custom-built homes, extensions and renovations, director Andrew Kerr has his sights set on some big aspirations.
“My goal is to be known as a specialist architectural home builder on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Kerr said.
“I pride myself on being open with my clients and striving to achieve the best outcome for them.”
Having been in operation for four years now, Blackhaus Construction came about organically after a successful build Mr Kerr completed for a friend.
“They had been working with another builder and already spent a lot of time and money on a design that was way over budget,” he said.
“They asked me to work with them to design and build a house to suit their budget.
“Then the referrals kept coming in.”
Four years later and with a string of custom high-end builds to his name, it seems business for Andrew Kerr and his team at Blackhaus Construction will only to continue to grow as they add to an already sterling reputation synonymous with quality finishes and high-end design.
Holding a prime position on the northwest side of Buderim, Karibu House, built by Blackhaus Construction, is a perfect illustration of a modern take on a traditional Queenslander.Gold Coast Winners 2021
