MBI'S PERSPECTIVE

Unveiling of the NEW MBI Headquarters

Perspective is Often Difficult to Apply to

BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT/CEO

As part of the Membership Meeting at the Annual Winter Conference, attendees will be given a virtual tour of MBI’s new headquarters by the design team at SVPA Architects. This presentation will be the official unveiling of what this new facility will have to offer. During the meeting, SVPA will share their insights on the design and the functionality of the space. They will also detail aspects of the renovation and discuss key design elements that will make this building the pride of MBI for years to come. As you may have seen previously, a key component of the facility will be the training and education space. With a seating capacity of 75, MBI will be able to utilize this state-of-the-art classroom to deliver high performing educational programs. The space will have capabilities to not only be highly engaging for those sitting in the room, but also for those attending virtually from the comforts of their own office spaces. This is a key component for the new space and was made a priority via the feedback from MBI leadership and member focus groups. 2

Another key component is accessibility. From a location perspective, the new facility is right off of I-235 in West Des Moines and 10 minutes from our current location. But our new facility must also be convenient for members. With over 100 parking spots, members can be confident they won’t be driving around looking for a parking spot. Other aspects of the new facility will cater to members. From AV and technology needs for enhanced communications, to little things like charging ports for electronic devices, the MBI headquarters will reflect the needs of the next generation of MBI member companies, as well as the commercial construction industry in general. Connecting with MBI members has and will continue to be a focal point for this Association and the decision to move forth with the new space aligns with the mission of being the essential resource for improving member performance. We all at MBI are optimistic that 2022 will be an exciting time for the commercial construction industry in Iowa.

Professional Profile:

SVPA

Architects Inc.

SVPA Architects has been proud to serve the Des Moines metro for over 68 years. Behind every project is a team of talented designers, who work together in a collaborative environment and share a passion for creating outstanding design. Our firm’s focus is on the user and the classic idea that form follows function. Good architecture is thoughtful and impacts the community in a positive way. When we as designers develop solutions that consider both present and future users – we create spaces that inspire and motivate the community around us. We have found this philosophy to be even more important as we help our clients navigate post-pandemic design and evolve their space to reflect their changing needs. SVPA is about people. We are 100% employee-owned and led by the third generation of owners. Our culture encourages a healthy worklife balance and many team members have been at SVPA for a large portion of their professional career. We take pride in building strong industry partnerships, establishing long-term client relationships and are fortunate to have our clients engage us again and again. In addition, SVPA actively gives back to the communities we serve. When SVPA was selected to design the new headquarters for MBI the approach was simple – listen. MBI has been in their existing headquarters for a long time and due to growth, it was no longer conducive to support internal collaboration nor was it a space that allowed membership to come together. The new space will bring employees together in the same area with ample space for both focused and collaborative work. The facility is also intended to be a space where members can come together. WE'RE BACK!

WINTER CONFERENCE 2022

BETTER THAN EVER BY LAURIE DELMOTT CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

All successful associations have a showcase event that is marked on the calendar months or in this case over a year in advance, and is approached with an all hands-on deck attitude! For Master Builders of Iowa, this event is none other than our Annual Winter Conference that will be held February 28 – March 2, 2022. And we are coming back better than ever, in a new venue! That’s right the Winter Conference is moving to the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Our conference for 2021 (all be it successful) was not our normal showing. While we knew we were unable to conduct business as usual, we got to work to retool a standing tradition. We had to figure out a way to hold a conference of a much smaller scale while still holding the safety of our attendees, speakers and staff a priority. The end result was reducing capacity at all levels. That meant --- the facility, social distance seating, no exhibits, masks mandated, no handouts, gloved staff . . . the whole nine-yards. While it was a far cry from what we were used to – we still offered educational opportunities by top notch presenters, and an opportunity to be at an “inperson” event – which for some was their first for a very long time.

4

FAST FORWARD

SO . . . Fast Forward to Today! . . . This year promises to be the kind of conference you have all come to know and value! First and foremost --- our Exhibitors are BACK!!! The Iowa Events Center has afforded MBI the option to expand and enhance our exhibitor space. 2022 will host over 80 displays and exhibits. We have our tried and true returning veterans and we are welcoming a whole crew of first-time vendors; we will have everything from equipment, material, goods and services to even some interactive displays and simulators! Opening night will feature our famous Industry Reception! Be our guest to complimentary food and beverages while visiting all the exhibits, hobnobbing with all your clients and POTENTIAL CLIENTS, seeing all your friends from around the state you haven’t seen for a while (well maybe on ZOOM), and have lots of opportunities to win great prizes. All for the LOW-LOW price of . . .

How You Can Help Make a Wish Come True

A NOTE FROM CHAD KLEPPE, MBI PRESIDENT & CEO

MBI was approached by representatives from Iowa’s Make-A-Wish organization to see how the construction industry could help with “wish” requests. Like many other aspects of our world, the impacts of COVID have changed how those who are the most vulnerable within our population are able to cope with their respective challenges. In this instance, Make-A-Wish is having to work to find ways in how they may grant many of their wishes, knowing that popular destinations are not an option. As an alternative, kids are asking for things that are more “project” based. Please read the following guest article from Make-A-Wish Iowa President & CEO Sara Kurovski.. Maybe you and your team can help fulfill a child's wish.) Imagine being a child, fighting a critical illness and being isolated due to a seemingly unending global pandemic. Your wish trip continues to be delayed due to your illness and potential complications of COVID-19. You begin to daydream of a peaceful place for yourself to relax, read and spend time with your family - this daydream soon becomes increasingly more desirable. After working with volunteers from Make-A-Wish® Iowa you decide to reimagine your travel wish to a tangible gift you can enjoy now. Make-A-Wish Iowa and our partners in construction quickly get to work to make your daydream become a reality! The mission of Make-A-Wish Iowa is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illness. In 2019, our organization granted an average of 185 wishes per year – a wish every other day in the state of Iowa. It is my goal to help lead the organization back to where we can grant 200 to 220 wishes a year. This will take an incredible amount of support and partnership, from across the state to accomplish. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 75% of our wishes were travel wishes. Iowa children dreaming of all the places and experiences they could have outside of their home. Magical places like Walt Disney World ® Resort, Hawaii and New York City fulfilled the dreams of Iowa children. The ability to travel while managing a critical illness is extremely difficult, and we are in a unique position to not only grant that wish but ensure that medical support is provided every step of the way.

8

InsideMBI

The pandemic impacted everyone – including our wish kids. Instead of dreaming of the places they go, they began thinking of things they could have. Things that could make their home more accessible to their needs or create space that would be unique for them. We began to see a shift from travel wishes to gift wishes such as high-tech gaming systems, travel trailers and backyard makeovers. Wishes like Amy’s backyard she-shed, Elijah’s playset and Cody’s backyard oasis are all wishes we are working hard to grant and countless others like this. Many of these wishes require expertise at a level that we have not experienced before. From companies to survey land, pour concrete and build an escape for the most deserving children. Our team is working to network and meet the individuals that are willing to stand up for these incredibly brave kids and their families. To help us plan, to design, to build and able to connect us and support us in all our new endeavors to make these construction-based wishes come true. This wish reimagination process allows us to continue to grant wishes in Iowa as travel remains an unknown for children with critical illnesses. (We are still able to grant travel wishes for the children who have the approvals from their physicians and for families who are comfortable with travel). We have never experienced this level of construction wishes in our chapters 35-year history. When given a lemon, we will make delicious lemonade! The reimagined wishes allow our team to work to with new partners (like you and others from the Master Builders of Iowa!) and allow others to truly witness and be a part of the power of a wish. As we welcome a new fiscal year, Make-A-Wish Iowa will continue to grant life-changing wishes for children across Iowa. We are also set to celebrate 35 years of providing hope, strength and joy to the brave children and their families—a milestone for our chapter. However, wishes are still waiting. At this time, there are over 350 children in Iowa waiting for their wish to be granted, due to travel restrictions, or shortages on goods and services.

OVER 350

Children Waiting

We anticipate needing to grant a record number of wishes over the next three years to meet the demand. Our goal is to grow the number of wishes we grant to at least 220 wishes a year but we cannot do that without the support of our community partners. Supporting Make-A-Wish Iowa by providing your expertise and services in the construction industry will allow us to grant the surge of wishes we are facing today and continue to grant wishes in Iowa so that these children will not wait a day longer than they already have for their wish to come true. Get involved today to help grant wishes tomorrow at www.wish.org/iowa.

Don’t wait for hope, together let’s build it!

2022 Legislative Session Approaching Quickly BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Session began on Monday, January 10, 2022 this year and as usual, Gov. Kim Reynolds has conducted her Condition of the State on the following day where she has released her budget to the public. The final adjournment date is targeted for April 29, 2022, marking the 110th day of the calendar session. The 110-day goal is easily missed a lot of times, depending on how well people are playing in the sandbox. With redistricting legislative districts recently conducted, there will be some competitive primaries throughout the state, and we all know how eager legislators will be to get done and talking with voters. By the publishing of this article, the MBI Government Affairs Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, December 8th and provide a set of recommendations that will go before the MBI Board of Directors. Those recommendations provide the roadmap for MBI’s public affairs team in what we hope to achieve legislatively to make the construction and business climate in Iowa even more favorable to our members. This year again, I am anticipating a very narrowly focused agenda that will also include support for some larger ticketed items. Without a doubt, our Construction Manager at-risk (CMaR) legislation will be priority #1. Our bill from last year is still alive, and will ultimately need to be approved by the Iowa House of Representatives. The bill, Senate File 183, will finally bring another option for public owners to utilize when building their projects.

10

I’m also anticipating a full robust discussion around a Governor’s workforce policy bill, major tax reform discussions on the personal and business side, a sales tax proposal dealing with double taxation on sister-company transactions and of course, the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund. MBI will play a role in all of these discussions and will have many conversations revolving around infrastructure investment and good public policy. Like years past, MBI will maintain a constant presence at the State Capitol during the 2022 session and will work hard to keep members apprised of what is going on under the Golden Dome. Currently, over 700 members subscribe to MBI’s weekly e-mail news bulletin called the Legislative Focus. If you are wanting to receive this electronic update, please email me to sign up. The Legislative Focus is a short and quick read that will keep you informed of “all things construction” at the Iowa Capitol. Lastly, we will continue to hold webinars on every third Friday of the month that the legislature is in session. It’s a pleasure to continue working for this respected organization and its membership and I’m proud of the job that we have done in making our industry even better.

Did You Know BY LAURIE DELMOTT CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

MBI Members have a special pricing structure that allows for huge discounts at the Annual Winter Conference – the more people you send . . .THE BIGGER THE DISCOUNT! An exclusive advantage MBI Members are afforded at the Winter Conference is the “Performance Track Package Pricing.” This special package pricing is available to MBI members for training seminars offered at the conference on Tuesday, March 1st.

YES! The 4th person you register and every person after that can attend professional development sessions on Tuesday for FREE!!! CPR/First Aid/AED Certification sessions and the awards events held on Tuesday are not included in this special pricing.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: The Performance Track Package fee entitles participants to choose the seminar combination that provides the best value and you can send as many employees as you want for only $2100. The fee for each session on Tuesday is $225. So if you had 10 employees attend both sessions at the regular prices, you would pay $4,500. But with the Performance Track Package you would only pay $2,100! So basically, the more employees you send from your company, the more money you save!

Another feature of the Performance Track Package pricing is that MBI members can also save on the safety training through the Safety Day Bonus Buy. If your company has paid the $2,100 for employees to attend the Tuesday classes, you’re eligible to enroll employees in Safety Day for only $195 per person (regularly priced at $300 – First Person and $250 for each additional person from the same company). This fee covers 4 training sessions, breakfast and awards program + lunch.

Here is how the Performance Track Package pricing breaks down for the Tuesday seminars: • 1st Person - $800 • 2nd Person - $700 • 3rd Person - $600 • 4th Person + - No Charge . . . 14

MBI staff is available to work with your company to get everyone registered and make sure you receive the best price available. For questions, please contact Nichole Fry at (515) 657-4386 or NFry@MBI.Build.

BUILDING A SAFETY

CHAMPION

BY JOE MELTON DIRECTOR OF SAFETY SERVICES

MBI and its preferred safety provider Construction Safety Services, Inc. (CSSI) launched the inaugural Building a Safety Champion in the spring of 2021. Twenty-five individuals participated in the 3-part series “This course provided the tools for leadership in changing “Safety Culture”. Making safety a “Value” which in turn sets priorities. Highly recommended.” -Pat Crosby Hubbell Construction Services CSSI is dedicated to positively enhancing workplace cultures and Building a Safety Champion will continue to be the flagship program for enhancing the individuals within an organization. After a successful inaugural class, MBI sought out and individual with the expertise to take Building a Safety Champion internally. I was fortunately identified as the ideal candidate and joined the team in June of 2021 as Director of Operations for CSSI and Director of Safety Services for MBI. Over my 15 years of experience in leading cultural improvements with companies of all sizes and in various industries, I have designed, implemented, and directed programs built to enhance safety

16

cultures and this expertise will complement the Build a Safety Champion program. Programs and process that I have developed have reduced company severity rates by at least 40%. In one particular instance, I orchestrated a restructuring that reduced the severity rate by 96% in 18 months with an organization recording more than four million hours worked annually. The same format accustomed to other educational programs at MBI will remain in which the 2022 Building a Safety Champion will be delivered over April, May, and June with one overnight stay to allow for the sponsored dinner and social networking. The targeted audience for the program is the same as last year. We are asking companies to identify those individuals who are most capable of creating momentum to establish a safety culture. We want people who take pride in their work, are good communicators and display integrity in all things they do. The curriculum will be slightly modified with the key foundations remaining in place. We will dig into safety psychology and understanding human behavior and why we decide to do things we do. Further in the program, we will build foundations for leading behavior change one conversation at a time. We will take deep dive into understanding and breaking down the root causes of an incident and evaluating what are the precursors to a Severe Incident and Fatality (SIF). There will be extensive interactive workshops drilling into critical controls in highrisk potential tasks and discussing advanced mitigation techniques. “This was much more than a safety training. We learned leadership skills that can be used in all facets of operations” -2021 Class Participant

During Construction Week, companies, service providers, and their partners recognize the hard work of those individuals who help create our built environment. This recognition takes many forms, including highlighting workers, distributing appreciation gifts, hosting company outings, and more.! BY CHELSEA DELMOTT COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

For the sixth consecutive year, Gov. Kim Reynolds proclaimed the first full week in October “Construction Week in Iowa.” The official proclamation signing in her formal office was attended by MBI members and staff. MBI provided a couple of job sites with an “on the house” lunchs this year to member employees of those job sites to express the appreciation we all have for the men and women in the industry. This was a great way to kick off Construction Week 2021! Many companies celebrated Construction Week in their own ways, including both MBI members and non-members alike! Some companies hung banners at their job sites and wore branded Construction Week apparel while others promoted the week and their employees across social media. Construction Week may occur only once a year, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the only time to celebrate and promote the industry. By demonstrating appreciation for industry colleagues, we not only recognize their achievements, but simultaneously increase the visibility of construction careers in our communities.

RAISING THE BAR On Safety Education

And Training

BY JOE MELTON DIRECTOR OF SAFETY SERVICES

There are many driving forces for the training and education of employees including increased productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, regulatory demands, variance reduction, hazard recognition, and overall awareness. In any organization, our most valuable asset is our employees, and their time is precious. When we train and educate our employees, the utilization of their time is paramount. High-quality and effective training is the key component for optimal results. Here are some insights on how to create an effective training and educational presentation.

1st step: Know your audience

Some tips and best practices for optimal delivery:

• Optimal learning styles

Death by PowerPoint is not a new concept, and a necessary evil at times. Effective adult learning tips for lecture-style presentation is to re-engage the audience every 4-5 slides with a picture, video, interaction, audience poll questions. This type of activity keeps the attention of a student for enhanced retention of information. Bullets and font matter as well and the rule of thumb is six or fewer bullets per slide and 24 font or larger.

• How does your audience best learn? • Visual, auditory and kinesthetic

2nd step: Scope • Simply put what do you want them to do with the knowledge and skills obtained in the class.

3rd step: Delivery method • How will this training be delivered? • In-person, Live stream virtual, Recording, Learning management platform Once you have completed these three steps you have a framework for your next class and education series.

28

Utilizing technology does not need to be a phobia, audience response quizzes, and polling is great engagement tool and retention gauge as well. Asking live quiz questions shows instant results for retention rather than the old “everybody understands? Any questions” followed by crickets.

InsideMBI

Virtual learning has become more prevalent in the last few years, too often though it has become a convenient way to deliver PowerPoint slides. If all that is going to be covered is the information on the slides without interaction, engagement or workshops don’t hold the class, simply send out the slides and allow follow-up questions. Optimal virtual learning involves a video live stream of the instructor and students, break-out rooms for workshops, and group work. In-person delivery remains the most effective when possible to maximize in-person delivery through interactive workshops. In a recent fall protection class, we displayed the eight steps for putting on harnesses on the screen while having each student put on their harness with the instructor talking through the steps and physically displaying the correct methods. This style of workshop utilizes all three learning styles Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. Give students a reason to focus, not a reason to be distracted. Limit controllable distractions, holding a class in an active warehouse with forklifts driving around is not an optimal learning environment. Asking an employee who is accustomed to working with their hands and being on their feet to sit on a steel chair for eight hours is not optimal for enhanced learning either. A different voice can help break up the "same ol same ol", and utilizing instructors from your insurance provider, OSHA outreach and CSSI can enhance retention. Employee retention is as important as it ever has been, and enhanced training and education strengthens the relationship between the employee and employer.

MBI MEMBERS DELIVERED

RECORD FUNDRAISING YEAR BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

As we close the books on the 2021 fundraising season for the MBI-PAC, I wanted to provide the membership an update on how we did collectively. If you recall in some of my previous articles, I stated our goal of raising $150,000 for the MBI-PAC this year. I chose that number strategically to address the needed level of support from MBI to our legislative candidates for office. I also picked this lofty number to challenge the membership through our Builders Action Fund campaign to reach deeper into their own companies more than ever before. 2022 marks an unusual year of political activity in Iowa. Not only is it a mid-term election nationally, the legislative boundaries in Iowa are changed. That means competitive primaries, retirements and renewed ambitions for political outsiders. It was important that we raise a substantial amount of money this year heading into the 2022 elections by putting MBI at the forefront. With the new Builders Action Fund push, we asked for a higher level of contributions, commitment and activity with our PAC program in return for additional recognition and exposure amongst our individuals and companies.

30

At the direction of the Government Affairs Committee, we increased our largest contribution level from $750 to $1,500. That hadn’t been done in over 20 years. We also started our first Legacy Club level that recognizes a company’s collective efforts in contributing to the PAC including getting new team members to contribute, sponsoring a PAC event and direct advocacy to lawmakers. I’m pleased to report to you that we ended the year with 173 contributors raising $133,736. While we came up a little short of our $150,000 goal, we raised a record amount this year and I’m extremely proud of how you responded. This total represents a 20% increase over 2020 and a 12% increase over 2019. We also saw our first Company Legacy Club member that will be recognized at the Annual Winter Conference for their incredible support of our advocacy efforts. Sincerely, thank you to all who have contributed this year AND in year’s past. There’s primarily one reason we sit where we do legislatively, and that’s because of you. If you have any questions about our advocacy efforts, or would like me to come address your team of employees, please don’t hesitate to reach out at BHammes@MBI.Build.

MBI TO OFFER SPANISH

TOOLBOX SAFETY TALKS BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT & CEO

In an effort to provide value back to its membership, MBI offers – at no additional charge - its existing library of Tool Box Safety Talk to firms as part of their membership package. New for 2022, this offering will now include a Spanish version of Tool Box Safety Talks. Through CSSI, MBI’s preferred safety provider, members can now access an entire complement of Tool Box Safety Talks in Spanish. Both the English and Spanish versions can be accessed via the MBI website in downloadable PDF formats. Clases de Seguridad en Español (Safety Classes in Spanish) In addition to Spanish safety talks, MBI, through CSSI, is also offering certain classes in Spanish. CSSI has identified a provider who has expertise in safety training and can effective and expertly conduct classes like a 10 Hour OSHA entirely in Spanish. (By having the class taught in Spanish, there is no need for a translator which would double the time – and expense – of the class.) The importance of training workers for safety protocols is a must for construction companies and the need for training of Spanish speaking workers takes on an even higher degree of importance as communication barriers and understanding of basic safety programs creates unnecessary risk exposure and increased dangers for everyone on the site. Should you be interested in learning more about safety training programs that are being offered in Spanish, please contact Tom Fulcher at TFulcher@MBI.Build.

InsideMBI

BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT/CEO

As MBI’s preferred safety provider, Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. (CSSI) provides not only safety services like job site audits and trainings, but also is charged with assessing your company’s overall risk management strategies. CSSI professionals believe that a safe worksite is only part of an overall safety equation. Moreover, CSSI is positioned to work with companies and clients to make institutional changes that impact company behavior. This is where CSSI can be most effective and beneficial to construction companies.

Three Areas of Focus – The Company / The Project / The Individual The Company CSSI’s retainer services go well beyond job site audits to where the scope of service takes in a much broader look at company safety. CSSI’s retainer-based services for general contractors, as well as specialty contractors offers a unique approach to jobsite safety that brings in a customized third-party perspective to all your jobsites. Also as a retainer client, among many other offerings, your firm is offered a 25% discount on all training conducted by CSSI professionals.

The Project The WORKSAFE program is the industry standard for project-specific safety. Since 2012, the partnership between CSSI and Iowa OSHA has helped to increase safety on over 850 projects statewide. Also, WORKSAFE is very prevalent at the Regent institutions. In fact, per the direction of the Regents, all projects valued at $500,000 or more has the requirement of utilizing WORKSAFE. The WORKSAFE requirement is part of the bidding documents and must be utilized by the prime contractor awarded the contract. CSSI is also seeing other public owners, as well as private-sector owners, take similar actions in requiring WORKSAFE on their respective projects.

The Individual CSSI, in partnership with MBI’s education and leadership development services, can provide a worker-specific approach to better prepare your employees for risks and exposures on the jobsite. Through MBI’s Training on Demand (TOD) services, CSSI is able to recommend a full complement of training programs that can be customized to each and every client. If deficiencies in safety and risk management practices are identified during jobsite audits, CSSI pro’s can help create a means of addressing safety challenges through the educational and training programs offered by MBI’s TOD service. This approach not only trains a worker, but takes great steps in changing behaviors. All in all, CSSI is ready to help clients with all things related to safety and risk management. No other entity brings together a wide array of training professionals who are focused on keeping your workers safe and striving to get the greatest return on your risk management investments. To get a true appreciation for the scope of services that CSSI can provide your company, we have created the CSSI Safety Services Guide (www.iowacssi.com/companyapproach). Within this Guide, you will see how CSSI professionals believe that a safe worksite is only part of an overall safety equation. And how CSSI professionals can work with your company to make institutional changes that impact safety behavior. This is where CSSI can be the most effective and beneficial to construction companies like yours. Should you have any questions or need additional information on CSSI scope of safety services, please feel free to contact CSSI’s Director of Operations – Joe Melton – at Joe@IowaCSSI.com.

BUILDING A MENTAL HEALTHY CULTURE INSIGHTS FROM THE 2021 MENTAL HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION SURVEY

BY CAL BEYER VICE PRESIDENT; WORKFORCE RISK & WORKER WELLBEING CSDZ HOLMES MURPHY COMPANY

In today’s rapidly changing economy, mental health is top of mind for business leaders from various companies in all industries. This includes construction companies. It has not always been that way. Historically, mental health was a taboo topic in the workplace and even more so on jobsites. Mental health is a personal issue, a family matter, a community concern, and a societal challenge. Why has it not been a workplace issue? Stigma is a major barrier that kept people from acknowledging that they were not okay. Seeking help was seen as a sign of weakness rather than as a sign of strength. Stigma remains a barrier that keeps people from either offering or seeking help. Stigma is a fear of the unknown combined with a fear of judgment from others or fear of consequences -- both real and perceived.

Rising Pressures in Construction Stress, anxiety, supply chain disruptions and delays, rising costs and financial pressures, are inducing pressures across all sectors of construction. The regular pressures of construction are immense, including demanding work conditions with long hours, frequent overtime, pressing deadlines, long commutes and travel which separates workers from families and other supports. These pressures spill over and 36

affect the workforce and workplace, including jobsite productivity quality, risk, safety, and ultimately project and company profitability.

Rising Risks in Iowa According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP.org), in January 2020, Iowa was ranked 21st in the rate of suicide with a rate 19.8% higher than the national average. More troubling news was recently released by the State of Iowa Office of Drug Policy showing rising rates of alcohol-related and overdose deaths in Iowa. Specifically, alcohol-related deaths in Iowa rose 26% from the previous year, while opioid-related overdose deaths in Iowa increased 35%. These data points are similar to national trends. Rural areas are hit harder than urban areas. Importantly, while there is no data specific to industry or occupation, this is where the construction industry was before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the first data on suicide by industry in 2016 (and again in 2018) and by occupation/trade in 2020. The dynamics are the same, which means the risk factors are the same, which means industry leaders need to rally together and address these challenges head-on like has been done for suicide prevention. InsideMBI

For many years, construction has had heightened awareness of the risk of suicide among construction workers and retirees. The Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention was formed in 2016. There is good news, too. In fact, the cover story of Engineering News-Record on August 3, 2021 (or digital issue on July 28, 2021) featured stories of hope, help, and recovery in the construction industry of employers and employees dealing with mental health, addiction treatment and recovery, and suicide prevention.

2021 Mental Health and Well-being in Construction Pulse Survey In September 2021, the Center for Workplace Mental Health released their Pulse Survey on Mental Health and Well-being in the Construction Industry. This pulse survey sheds light on the importance of worker mental health and well-being in construction and opportunities to continue moving forward in effectively addressing these issues. The final report highlights findings, strategies, recommendations, and resources to address four crucial challenges to improve mental health for construction workers:

3. Discuss mental health with your senior leadership team and develop a simple strategy to develop a mentally healthy culture and to improve sharing resources with employees and family members.

4. Check with your company’s insurance advisor to see if you have an Employee Assistance Program to provide support services to workers and dependents, including counseling for relationship, financial, legal, or mental health counseling services and resources. If your company has an EAP, additional ideas on maximizing the effectiveness and promotion of the EAP are addressed in this recently article in The VOICE published by the Construction User’s Roundtable (CURT). Cal Beyer, CWP, SCTPP is Vice President of Workforce Risk and Worker Wellbeing for CSDZ, a Holmes Murphy company. Since 2010 he has served with the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and on its Executive Committee since 2016. He serves on the Expert Advisory Group for the Center for Workplace Mental Health and for Heritage CARES. Cal was instrumental in the launch of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Engineering News-Record named him a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016 in the global construction industry for his work on suicide prevention. Contact Beyer at cbeyer@CSDZ.com or 651-307-7883.

1. Engaging company leaders to support mental health initiatives visibly and vocally and to lean in with vulnerability to let workers know “it is okay to not be okay”. Leaders who care share resources to help workers and families in need of support.

2. Raising mental health awareness by sharing a continuous stream of resources with employees to better understand the services and supports available to them and their dependent family members.

3. Creating a mentally healthy culture to reduce the stigma and shame associated with mental health.

4. Removing barriers and enhancing access to mental health services and support.

Action Steps for Company Leaders 1. Read the 2021 Mental Health and Well-being in Construction Survey Final Report.

2. Read the flipbook Building a Caring Culture: Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace.
