Matador Eats hosted environmental activist Rob Greenfield in the Largest Plant-Forward College Event in Support of Earth Month On Stop Food Waste Day, Cal State Northridge students joined millions of peers taking part in “Grate-Ful”, an event focused on plant-forward, waste-free, and giveback initiatives. Cal State Northridge joined 300 other colleges and universities on April 27, 2022 to participate in the nationwide event designed to celebrate gratitude for Earth, fight food waste and advance sustainability on college campuses. Millions of students across the United States were invited to participate, making Grate-Ful the largest plant-forward event in the country. Grate-Ful was created by Chartwells Higher Education, a recognized leader in contract food service management and Cal State Northridge’s foodservice partner. The event took place simultaneously across all Chartwells’ campuses on Stop Food Waste Day, encouraging students and staff to dine from plant-based menus, combat food waste, and pack donation bags to fight food insecurity. Cal State Northridge also hosted environmental activist and humanitarian Rob Greenfield for an in-person meet and greet as well as a virtual panel discussion and Q&A. Rob started his “Trash Me” campaign on April 20, 2022. For 30 days Rob will be physically wearing the amount of trash an average human accumulates, creating a powerful image to raise awareness of waste.

WE FIGHT FOOD WASTE In addition, students also enjoyed a plant-forward menu at G’mos, along with earth month-friendly festivities such as a Plant truck, bike repair truck (in partnership with AS), giveaway of Earth-friendly items, fruit giveaway, healthy food sampling and free plant seeds. “We are so excited to not only give our students an opportunity to help the planet but to help others in need, as well. Especially during Earth Month, Grate-Ful gives us a chance to reflect on the gratitude we have for the Earth and what it gives us, and for our campus community,” said Omar Galvez, Resident District Manager, Chartwells Higher Education at CSUN.
It was such a treat to see The Haus Plant on campus. The students really loved the convenience and experience. The plant truck was packed for 2 hours.

Grate-FUL is the fourth and final signature event that we hosted simultaneously with 300 other universities in the U.S. Students are the heart of every campus and we are excited to celebrate campus life with joyful moments centered around food.
“Giving back to the communities we serve is vital to us, so during Earth Month, we wanted to create an event that gives us an opportunity to do so in an Earth-friendly way,” said Lisa McEuen, CEO of Chartwells Higher Education. “Celebrating Stop Food Waste Day also allowed us to incorporate new, exciting activities for students as well as offer customized, plant-forward menus in all of our dining halls.”

All of Rob’s extreme adventures and activism campaigns are meant to bring attention to important environmental and social issues and to inspire positive change. They may appear unattainable to some people however, they contain an abundance of simple lessons and tips that can be adapted into any life to live in a manner that is beneficial to the earth, community and self. Through his life, he inspires others to make simple, small changes that grow into great change at a personal and societal level.

The Orchard Caters The Soraya’s 10th Anniversary Founder’s Day Celebration
The Orchard worked with The Soraya on their 10th Anniversary, Founder’s Day Celebration starring Megan Hilty, Joshua Henry and Eden Espinosa, with Richard Kaufman as Conductor and Director. It was such a beautiful Broadway-themed concert and we were so thrilled to be a part of the elegant event. We worked with the talented team of The Soraya in coming up with a menu that was both delicious and creative. We served between 350-400 guests at the event. Our team had a blast preparing for the event and serving all the sponsors, campus staff, patrons of the arts, donors and campus partners.
