How to make money from your one acre plot of land I

t is many people’s dream to be able to make money out of farming, live a good life and supporting one’s family. This dream may seem unattainable but with hard work and good planning, you can earn enough money to realize this dream, and you don’t need to own acres upon acres of land first. Although several smallholder farmers believe their plots of land are far from adequate to achieve this, the truth is that it is possible for one to maximise profits from their small piece of land, say an acre, and here’s how:

Grow dual crops

Depending on the type of crops you are growing, you may be able to plant two crops side by side hence saving you space. There are lots of crop combinations that are compatible and good to grow together, helping a farmer generate higher yields using the same amount of space and water at the end of the season. Consider growing cassava and ground nuts, for example.

Grow high yield crops

This calls for research about plant breeds before planting, as opposed to simply burying every seed into the soil. This means it is also important to investigate the soil type in your area as a major requirement. Growing vegetables, for example, guarantees not only a high yield but possibly two to three harvest per year.

Turn to irrigation

With the growing effects of changing weather patterns, irrigation will most likely be required. There is a beauty in irrigation

though; it means you are able to carry on with your farming activities throughout the year instead of relying only on the natural rains.

Use fertilisers

Adopting an increased use of fertilisers especially as soil fertility deteriorates makes it pertinent to turn to manure/fertilisers such as animal droppings which should be added to soil to restore their fertility.

Making use of IT

Information technology can support better crop, fertiliser and pesticide selection. It also improves land and water management, pro-

vides access to weather information, and connects farmers to sources of credit. By arming yourself with information about prices in different markets you increase bargaining power when buying seeds to plant because of price and cost awareness.

Sell farm byproducts

Farms usually have a variety of by-products, and some of them have good resell value. For example you could make money by selling manure if you farm has livestock on it. Alternatively, you may use the same manure in your own gardens and improve its yields.
