bryan white is a liability to sunk boat rescue - mps Members of Parliament have estioned Bryan White’s role in doing police and UPDF work and what powers he has to order around trained soldiers doing their work yet he is a mere civilian. Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko argued that White is using mundane techniques and money to lure Ugandans into doing work with rudimentary tools yet the UPDF and the Police have better and sophisticated ways. White has hitched camp on Lake Victoria waters since Sunday morning trying to help rescue survivors and retrieve the bodies missing accident victims using the power of money.

Shar Sue Leo They only think about their salaries this was not about police or military it was about Uganda and Ugandans to work hand in hand Hellon Akena Imagine if it was me ordering those soldiers my butt would be flog kick left right and center. Police to question all boat survivors Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has confirmed that all survivors that were on the ill-fated boat will be questioned. According to Luke, the survivors will individually have to record statements with police so that to help investigators string the facts prior, during and after the tragedy. However, he says it will be done after they all recover from an incident that almost claimed their lives.

Bakaleke declared police deserter

Friday declared day of national mourning for boat cruise victims

The police top management has declared Assistant Commission of Police (ACP) Siraj Bakaleke a deserter. All payments to his account have since been reportedly halted. ACP Bakaleke, the former Kampala Metropolitan Regional Police Commander was declared Absent without Official Leave (AWOL) on November 19, 2018, after more than 30 days of allegedly absconding from duty. His declaration as a deserter comes two months after the police was served with an arrest warrant from the Anti-Corruption Court to allow him to face charges of fraud, kidnap and abuse of office.

Parliament of Uganda on Tuesday declared Friday, November 30, as a day of national mourning as the country remembers the victims of the Lake Victoria board accident, the Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah said. The Saturday accident claimed lives of 33 people with over 60 still unaccounted for. Security operatives yesterday successfully managed to pull the boat wreckage from beneath the water and now efforts will be to totally pull it out of the lake.

Celebrities that we can’t wait to see get married BY WILLIAM KASOBA & MOSES ABEKA

A

fter Flavia Tumusiime and Andrew Kabuura made it official, singer and actress Hellen Lukoma teased us with a pseudo kukyala which turned out to be a video shoot. As the celebrities are taking their relationship goals beyond selfies and matching outfits, here are some of the celebs who we can’t wait to see get married. MC Kats and Fille MC Kats proposed to singer Fille Mutoni in 2014 and from then on, their relationship has found fodder in tabloid space. In 2015, at Fille’s show, the couple launched their wedding meeting but several scandals have seen them hit the rock and bounce back several times. With the couple blessed with

We are not sure whether the mango will wait to ripen when others prefer to eat raw with salt. Juliana Kanyomozi Unlike the above personalities, Juliana Kanyomozi has been linked to several men but the rumours disappear as fast as they surface. After the death of her son, Keron, fans have been anxious to watch her next step in the relationships but it seems, it’s a tough decision. Nevertheless, love is something we can

a daughter, we can’t wait to see them tie a knot despite the recent rumour that they are no longer together. They say in matters of the heart, you can’t rush to judge a couple. Our fingers are crossed. Eddy Kenzo and Rema The pressure on this couple to make their relationship official is still on. With Eddy Kenzo being linked to a number of women like recent Big Talent recruit Pia Pounds, the Muslim and polygamy talk has always come in handy to water down the argument. However, after Rema released ‘Sili Muyembe’, a song in which she warns her lover to utilize his oppourtuinty before the mango is snatched, it’s not business as usual. For starters, the love relationship between the celebrity couple was first kept private until Rema conceived. After Rema gave birth to Aamal, there were no more arguments despite rumours linking the child to Mathias Walukaga. Earlier this week at the 10 years of Eddy Kenzo press conference, the singer admitted that no one can force him marry Rema as he will do it in his own time and pace. However long you take, we shall wait.

always wait for. Sheebah Karungi For God’s sake who wouldn’t want to at least hear of a Sheebah rumored pregnancy? The Team No Sleep singer once said; “I have had several boyfriends since I was 16 years though I broke up with some of them and hooked up new ones. I always post everything about my life on social media but when it

comes to my love life, I keep it private.” Trust me just like her music career, Sheebah has excelled in making her love life private. However, during a one-on-one with this paper, the Nkwatako hit maker revealed that she dreams of being a mother rather than settling for a marriage. For Sheebah, we shall settle for pregnancy news. After motherhood, anything can happen! Anita Fabiola After enduring several failed relationships and revenge porn, media personality Anita Kyarimpa aka Fabiola earlier this year came out and disclosed to this paper about her life, love and marriage. Fabiola revealed that she met an American-based boyfriend who is allegedly an NBA player that changed her life to an extent of thinking about settling down for a serious marriage. When we asked her to disclose his identity, she stated that she does not trust ‘these ho*s’. Our fingers are still crossed. Desire Luzinda Will Desire Luzinda ever get married? This is the common question every fan has in mind whenever he/she sees the ‘ever 25 year old’ singer. The Kitoone hit maker has both sour and sweet experiences in her love life. After breaking up with her baby daddy John Kaddu, Desire moved on to several affairs that included; Juma Seiko, Tycoon Lwasa, a one Franklin, a Nigerian man she says believes leaked her nudes among others. Desire once disclosed during an interview on NTV Uganda that she is willing to get married but she is yet to get a serious man. However, speaking to us recently, she stated that she can’t rule out marriage now that she is born

again! Desire walking down the aisle could happen soon.

People I Tragedy

Here are the men that braved Lake Victoria waters to save lives of accident victims BY ALEX TAREMWA

A

lot has been said about the Saturday, November 24 accident on the waters of Lake Victoria in which a boat carrying 120 people sank killing 33. Although 27 others have been rescued alive, little has been said about the men – mostly fishermen who braved the lake at dusk to save lives of the accident victims despite the meagre resources they had at their disposal. George Onyango George Onyango, 27, is a Kenyan although born in Uganda. He has been fishing in the waters around Mutima beach for eleven years now. From Buzindeere village where his main base is, Onyango says that he first encountered MV Templar – the sunken boat buzzing very loud music around where he was fishing.

George Onyango

“The music was not bad. I was actually dancing to it as I worked,” he narrated but no sooner had he lifted his eyes off the boat than people started screaming. Onyango noticed that the part of the boat was tilted as the boat started taking in water and submerging. With his engine boat, he sailed near the boat and urged people to jump off and also summoned his colleagues who immediately swung into action. This, he says was around 7:30pm. With his engine boat, he ferried some of the victims in groups of five to the shore and back to the water to fetch others as his colleagues tried to give them first aid such as mouthto-mouth to resuscitate them as most had already swallowed gallons of water. In an interview, he said he singlehandedly saved 20 people although three of them later died. These twenty included the crown Prince of Buganda, David Kintu Wasajja.

on his cast nets for fish when he saw a light coming from the direction of Mutima beach but since his boat’s engine had taken in a lot of water, it failed to start immediately. “But I could not wait for it to start. I jumped on one of Abdul Nsubuga (another fisherman) and went to the water. When we reached, I realised so many people could not swim so I jumped in myself. I would dive and get people to them to the boat that would then proceed to the shore,” he said.

“We saved people but some of them were so traumatized that would not talk. Some could not even remember their names or where they were. ”

Amuza Mulwana Eye witness accounts have it that the Uganda Police and the marine team from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) arrived at the scene in Mukono at 1am in the night – two hours after the fishermen had already retired from the rescue mission. Mulwana, 33, was waiting to check

ashore and returned to save accident victims who included singer Irene Namubiru. In her account of the incident, she used the torch on her phone to guide Masole to her location where Templar Bisaase’s wife Sheila was also fighting for her life. She later died. From her recollection, Namubiru reckons that Masoke made three trips back into the lake and returned with more survivors and until when there were no more people alive on the lake to save. “He heard my distress calls for help as i saw other boats passing us by, saw the light of my phone that I kept waving up and came were so traumatized that would not talk. Some could not even remember their names or where they were. They were irrelevant questions such as, have you seen my phone?” he said. Abdul Karim Nsubuga At just 24 years, Nsubuga has made his mark as a speed junkie. If the boat was a car and the water was the road, Nsubuga would be in the Formula One cluster. His speed on the water came in handy on Saturday. He gave his colleagues the much needed urgency to ferry bodies and survivors to the shore at the time when the police and UPDF were nowhere to be seen. Although he witnessed his colleague, Bosco Owejo, helplessly drown, he did not lose the bigger picture of the other people he had on the boat. Bosco Owejo (RIP) He had a heart of gold - a true martyr who sacrificed himself for others to live. When a call for help came in from Onyango, Owejo was one of the first respondents despite being ill-prepared. He neither had a life jacket nor any other safety gear. As he swam to save victims who were at the time still alive, Owejo did not envision himself dying but when after gathering several survivors on the small engine boat and noticing that it was also bound to capsize due to excess weight, the fisherman sacrificed himself for the rest to reach the shore. His energy however deserted him and he drowned moments later. His colleagues have described him as a man of courage whose example they will up to for the rest of their lives. Brian Masole Kiggundu Unlike the above mentioned, Masole is not a fisherman but a university student of Kampala International University (KIU) who together with his friends had hired a boat to take a weekend excursion on the water. Born in 1995, on September 26, the Mass Communication student made a split decision that will forever be remembered in the lives of several people. While saying on a nearby island, Masole saw MV Templar capsize and he immediately sped his colleagues

right to me. He asked me for the phone, bag and then pulled me in, the singer posted on her Facebook. Well wishers such as musician Fille, journalist Alan Kasujja have since mooted plans to contribute money to Masoke’s tuition fees as a reward for his brevity and a lesson as the BBC Presenter put it that ‘good deeds indeed pay.’ It also said that socialite Bryan White who has since Sunday camped at Mutima Islam has also given each of the fishermen involved in the rescue mission Shs100,000 for their efforts.

King Saha x Weasel MPA LOVE

W

hen mother cow is chewing, the calf is always watching. There is nothing that serves the simple Ibo proverb more than King Saha’s meteoric rise this year. He has simply fueled Radio’s torch by the day and immersed himself in the trail of craft that the sleeping crooner left behind. If there is anything to Mpa Love, it is simply the rich musicality put together by both Saha and Weasel in the most subtle of delivery. Nessim brings his Midas touch to the table embedding an Afro beat instrumental, infused with underlying reggae and band – sound influences. King Saha teases the instrumental itself with lyrical repetition before letting go on his first verse. It builds lyrical rhyme that builds up to the beauty of simplicity that the song espouses. King Saha lays down his flaws to his significant other about his human imperfection and opens up to his vulnerable side and asks for the one thing we all want, Love. The song stirs up a strong cloud of nostalgia from Rihanna’s same thing. King Saha sings the chorus in laid back vocal ranges. They evoke a deep sense of vulnerability. It simply resonates with the inner desire for Love. Weasel steps out of his usual strut and goes tender with his dancehall bars. He incorporates lyrical rhyme as he asks the love of his life not to leave him and promises to show their love to the entire universe. King Saha ends the song with his initial lyrical build up of the pre chorus and it is certainly an effort we all waited for so long. After Biri Biri, Very well and now Mpa Love, he has build a penchant for consistency and certainly proven himself. Slowly, I am learning to put color to his own silhouette and paint him out of Radio’s shadow. Evidently, better days are coming soon.

Andy Skillz - the DJ that Rocks Speke Hotel

S

peke Hotel’s Rock Bar has become a popular hangout for multi-racial revellers who are mostly tourists, investors, businessmen who come to enjoy soothing, often throwback music from the 80s. DJ Andy Skillz who spins the discs on the ‘back in time Mondays’ taps from his wealth of experience to deliver the best music that leaves no Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, European or American in their chairs. In an interview with Matooke Republic, Skillz who has been playing in clubs for 10 years knows over a million songs by head. “This makes it easy for me to play for any audience as long as I identify their country of origin. I have played at Diwali Night for Baba Sudhir, I am the one who started Bollywood nights in Kampala here,” he said. Having learnt from the great Rhino Kay, Andy Skillz cut his niche as a corporate DJ – specialization that also dictates the music he plays. Through

Pearl Chat UK – an online television, model firm and fashion house, he has sold his trade to Ugandans in the Diaspora who in return put him on referral for their friends and family when they visit Uganda. The only problem that has bedevils the deejaying industry, he says, is that Ugandan clients don’t pay DJs and this is what has kept them unable to make ends meet. Unlike his colleagues, Skillz supplements his salary with farming, selling luxurious perfumes and fragrances and a jig at Big Mikes on Quiz Tuesdays. Skillz has been privileged to play in front of some of Uganda’s most powerful people like the Kabaka of Buganda, tycoon Sudhir Rupaleria, ex-minister Jim Muhwezi among other big wigs. A member of the Uganda Youth Forum, the DJ who is also a qualified sound engineer admitted that Ugandan music has moved great heights and pointed out Sheebah and Eddy Kenzo as the artistes whose songs he cannot leave the booth without playing.

Married couples ONE SIGN HE’S GOING TO WASTE YOUR TIME kiss less than once a week, O research says BY IRENE M. NAMARAH

As it turns out… Sex may not be the only thing people stop having after they get married. Even kissing could be work… as one survey found out that

one in five married couples go as long as a week without swapping saliva.

Kiss and tale

One of the most clichéd stereotypes of monogamy is that once a couple says “I do,” they stop having sex. May be it is not necessarily true, but hey, it is a stereotype for a reason. Well, apparently sex isn’t all marrieds stop having. A new survey has revealed that nearly one in five married couples go without kissing for as long as one week at a time. And when they do finally lock lips, it will last no longer than five seconds for 40 percent of them. How you could go an entire week without kissing your spouse is mind boggling. Granted, these results are based on the British population — the survey was sponsored by the British Heart Foundation — but how different are countries when it comes to kissing, really? There are some glimmers of hope in the results, albeit few. Five percent of those age 45 and up squeeze in more than 30 kisses per week, which averages out to just over four per day. So, if we are not counting a presumed “good morning” and “good night” kiss, that leaves two others. Even younger couples aged 18 to 24 — not necessarily married — make some time for romance, with an average of 11 kisses per week, or less than two per day. The results were released in an effort to publicise a campaign seeking to highlight the importance of knowing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation — which is sometimes referred to as “kiss of life”.

Use avocado to keep bad breath, nausea in check BY BRIAN EGWALU

W

onderfully shaped with thick green skin that darkens as the fruit ripens, avocados are among the most dearest God-given fruits in the world of health and nutrition. Many people know avocado as a fruit just like any other yet this precious food is more than just a fruit as it is the only one from the fruit family that provides substantial amounts of healthy monosaturated fatty acids, prevents bad breath and aids in maintaining healthy skin and weight as well as overcoming nausea and morning sickness. Avocado is a great source of vitamin C, E, K and B6 as well as riboflavin, niacin and potassium, which is an essential mineral that maintains normal blood pressure and heart functioning. This fascinating fruit also contains a host of other nutrients such as iron, phosphorus, dietary fibre and magnesium, another essential mineral

that helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle functioning, is critical in supporting a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady, helps bones remain strong, regulate blood glucose levels and aids in the production of energy.

Counters asthma, hair loss

Avocados are also jam packed with lutein, beta carotene and pantothenic acid, an incredible mineral which plays a key role in cell regeneration, wound healing and alleviation of conditions such as asthma, hair loss, allergies, stress, anxiety as well as respiratory disorder. This mineral also plays an important role in the manufacture of adrenal hormones and red blood cells.

The writer is a nutrionist

ne of the questions that really ticks me off is, “You are a beautiful and smart girl, how come you are not yet taken?” This question implies that I have something ugly in my closet. Which I have. Everyone does. But that’s not the point. The point is you are not supposed to insinuate that I have it. Because if you do, it means that you don’t have one; you are perfect. And there’s no human I hate on this earth more than a hypocrite. Trust me, I am not carrying you into the next phase of our relationship when you have already assumed the high ground position on me. I mean what do you want me say, hmmm? That I am still single because I don’t know how to cook, or because I am not great in the sack? If I really needed somewhere to pile my flaws, I would visit a therapist. Thank you very much. Also, since when is beauty and intelligence a thing for relationships? One of the reasons why beautiful girls take long to settle is this particular stereotyping. A man will come into a relationship with preconceived notions that a girl’s beauty is only meant for a man. And then he will waste all your time in an affair with your beauty and not with you. When he finds you to be both beautiful and smart, that is a particularly lethal cocktail he won’t swallow easily. He needs someone to make him feel good about himself and not someone to challenge him. We see these things you know. And the first sign that a man is going to waste your time is when he starts asking stupid questions like the one above.

CELEB STYLE

TREND ALERT! CARGO PANTS T

hanks for online clothing brands like fashion nova, cargo pants are now making a fashion statement. And with the great style options available now, you can rock these pants stylishly without looking like you just walked off the battle field.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I can’t do without my simple little earrings and that’s why I have a collection of them.

The first point should be to choose your pants in a popping shade. Instead of the obvious olive green or brown, try out the neon shades, red or even orange. Pair these with a well pitted top. And depending on what your style preferences are, you can accessorize these with a pair of clear heels, or sneakers for a more casual look. Beret hats, fanny packs and even bucket bags are also great accessory details for this look.

What is your worst buy ever? My worst was a short hair wig, which made me look 30 years older than I actually am. It was a bad idea for sure! What styling trick works for you all the time? I always stick to the bright colours when buying outfits. They never disappoint. Also high heels treat me right. I never go wrong. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Those tiny booty shorts!

In order to set your look a part, try to keep the cargo pocket detailing on your pants to just two or less. Also ensure they fit just right. While the buggy version is the most popular, there is nothing wrong with keeping yours skintight and well fitted.

street style @atimxo This look has us wishing cargo pants could make a comeback.

@chanellenatalie There is no such thing as too much black when it comes to fashion.

How to go through

challenging business times BY JAMES LUNGHABO

A students advised to embrace agriculture

Agricultural produce such as water melons, mushroom and cabbages are some of the easiest to start with because they need less capital... Sarah Babirye Kityo, Youth Member of Parliament

s a small business, you have to realise that you are largely on your own. The only time the government really cares about you is when it needs to collect its tax. So here you are, struggling to stay afloat, taking care of overhead costs, meeting the tax man’s demands, as well as growing the business. What can you do to not only stay afloat but also emerge out of these lean economic times as an even better business? n Share with other entrepreneurs. There is no problem you are going through that others haven’t. One thing I have realised is that most business owners are always willing to help out each other especially at an advisory level. Take advantage of this and talk to your circle of friends in business. n Critical analysis. Use this opportunity to critically assess your business in its entirety. Maybe there are things you are doing that need altering. Your processes, products, services, delivery etc may be wanting. Times are changing rapidly thereby putting pressure on those doing business to change at a similar pace. n Time to change. The fact that there are some challenges in your business automatically implies that you have to change the way you are doing things. Sticking to the approach you have always used might simply push you into further ruin. n Rethink staffing. Do you have staff? Assess all of them and find out whether you are indeed getting value for money from each. You need to establish what their tangible contributions are to the business. Go beyond the camaraderie and we are a team mantra to ensure that every coin spent gives you some returns. n Mentor. Defined as an experienced and trusted advisor, a mentor is a must-have. If you do not have one, please start scouting carefully. Just like a goat gives birth to a goat, the same should apply to your choice of a mentor. If you are planning to scale greater heights in running

private business, seek out a mentor that has excelled in that regard. n Re-skilling is key. Lean times demand for a reassessment of your individual self too. Your business success relies on skills that you have. With slow business, consider using the idle time to acquire new skills. n Who do you spend time with? This is coming last but happens to be a very important aspect.

The company you keep determines who you are. Our lives, thoughts and actions are shaped by what we see, hear and interact with continuously. Keep the company of negative minded people and you too shall retreat into that mode and start looking at things from a failure or impossibility point of view. It does not matter how bad the times get, always maintain a positive mindset. The Italian designer Domenico Dolce once said, “the worst times can be the best if you think with positive energy.”

ccording to the World Health Organization, road accidents are the leading cause of death of young people ages 15-29. Although our countries in general have many fewer cars, 40 of the 50 nations in the world with the highest road accident death rates are in Africa. These are grim statistics that we can change if we slow down and... let’s talk. What measures can we take to help improve the safety of our vehicles, roads, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists? Later this week is the UN World Day for Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims. Please do your part by sharing this information, especially with young people. Most of you can probably #Imagine the top reasons for road accidents: n Speeding.

Reflection: Buckle up, slow down and don’t text n Distracted driving (for example, talking on a mobile phone, texting, eating or drinking...) n Driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, even some prescription ones. nReckless and impatient driving. n Animals and people crossing the road or walking alongside it. n Ignoring road signs. n Rain and fog. n Running red lights and stop signs. nDriving at night without due care. n Changing lanes and turning unsafely, without indicating. nTailgating. n Road rage. nPotholes and other road infrastructure problems. n Driver fatigue. n Tire blow outs.

n Unsafe vehicles. n Deadly curves. n Street racing. nCar design defects. (Rare problem, but it does happen). An estimated 80% of car crashes are caused by distracted drivers, with the risk of an accident increasing: nwhen you are reading email or browsing the web while driving. nwhen texting behind the wheel. n when reaching for anything other than a phone while driving. n when making a call behind the wheel. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for at least 4.6 seconds. At 88 KPH, that’s like driving the length of a football field, blindfolded! Now there are a few simple things you (and your loved ones) all must do: Wear your

seat belts and make sure your children get into this habit, too. If you ride a bike of any kind, wear a helmet. If road accidents do occur, these can literally make the difference between life and death. To all of you innovators and inventors out there, what else can we do to keep our people safe on the roads? In taxis? On buses? What can we do to make things safer? By now you all should know this but let’s help educate others: Do NOT drink and drive, or text and drive! Every 90 seconds a person is injured in a drunk driving crash...

Just don’t do it.

Instead, use a ride hailing company such as Vaya or any other such company, or ask a friend to give you a lift. #YourLifeTurnsOnThis!

To be continued.. . .

How far can Vipers SC go in Caf BY WILLIAM KASOBA

R

eigning Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers Sports Club yesterday made its second appearance in the Caf Champions League eight years after the club was first presented with the opportunity to play on the continent, but turned it down. The Kitende-based club got promoted to the top division in 2006 as Bunamwaya. After four years in the top flight, it clinched its maiden league title in 2010 but declined the chance to play in the Caf Champions League due to financial reasons. In 2012 Bunamwaya was renamed to Vipers and won their second title in 2014-2015 season, qualifying for the Caf Champions League preliminary round and facing Nigeria’s Enyimba in the two-legged fixture which it marked the side’s first appearance in the competition. Despite winning the first leg 1-0, Vipers were eliminated after losing the second leg 2-0 away in Nigeria. A season later, they fell short in the UPL to KCCA FC but managed to clinch their first ever success in the Uganda Cup, beating Onduparaka FC 3–1 to qualify for the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup where they beat Volcan Club from Comoros in the preliminary round before going out to South Africa’s Platinum Stars in the first round 3–2 on aggregate. Going into this year’s competition, Vipers will be battling to join the company of KCCA FC that became Uganda’s first team to make it to the group stages of an African club football competition. If Vipers are looking for inspiration, you bet they will not look past KCCA, who suffered heartbreak several tries until last year when they managed to pull it off at last. However, before the current format of play which was introduced in 1997, Simba FC and SC Villa were the only Ugandan sides which teased to bring it home in 1972 and 1991 respectively but fell short and settled for being runners-up. Subsequent missions on the continent have not gone well at all for SC Villa since then: the last time they played in this competition in 2005 they were embarrassed 6-0 at the hands of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, while more recently against the Moroccan side FUS Rabat the Jogoos suffered a humiliating 7-0 Confederations Cup defeat in 2016. With examples from KCCA and SC Villa to pick from in recent years,

can Vipers do well on the continent? Riding on a positive vibe With both good and harsh examples to learn from, Vipers appear to have decided the starting point will be a positive mindset heading into the game. Having made a number of changes to improve the team over the years and make themselves ready to rub shoulders with the continent’s big boys, the vibe was certainly confident as Vipers embarked on this task. Before jetting off to Khartoum, Vipers’ head coach Martinez Espinoza said, “We go into this game seeking a good result away in Khartoum. It is important that we won our last league game therefore we go into this game with our spirits high. The players are in good shape and ready to fight for a positive result.” Whether that will be enough to sufficiently tackle seasoned campaigners like El Merriekh remains to be seen. Will the new players gel? After losing some of their top players last season like Ismail Watenga, Nico Wadada, Milton Kariisa and Erisa Ssekisambu among others, the club made several new

recruits to can help them retain the league and also make an impression on the continent. These included; goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya, Abraham Ndugwa, Rahmat Ssenfuka, Tito Okello, Brian Kalumba Noah Wafula among others. Most of them have so far showed brilliant blending with the old guns and the team looks well balanced in both depth and ability.

It is important that we won our last league game therefore we go into this game with our spirits high. The players are in good shape and ready to fight for a positive result...

Good league form a plus Although the team’s play is not yet impressive under the new manager, Vipers have at least managed to pick a point from every game so far this season, remaining unbeaten after winning five of their opening eight games. This will no doubt add to the confidence of the players, some of whom like Moses Waiswa will be further boosted by their newfound status as Uganda Cranes stars. Ambitions of the team After opening St Mary’s Kitende last year and going further to refurbish it this season, there is every sign to suggest that the team has its sights on not only playing in the Uganda Premier League but also taking the party to the continent. The project which club president Lawrence Mulindwa is eyeing is one that is focused on measuring his outfit against the best in Africa. The Vipers team will certainly not be lacking for ambition, but the 2018 campaign has probably come far too soon for the team to make an impact.

Friday Night Lights hits halfway stage BY OUR REPORTER

T

he eighth season of the Tusker Lite Friday Night Lights got off three weeks ago with a new touch. A new 3-on-3 format of the basketball game and change of venue to Pananmera Bar were the major twists. As the showpiece reaches its mid-point this Friday, there is every sign the show is only getting better. “The new format is more entertaining and tasking at the same time unlike the previous ones. The games are more intense and the environment is up there,” said Joseph Ikong who captains a side in the weekly event. Fans have

been encouraged by organisers to interact with players as a way of bridging the player-fan gap by fusing basketball and lifestyle. “We are trying to lessen the gap between fans, entertainment and basketball,” said FNL founder Tom Ocamringa adding the party has come to basketball as entertainment and lots of exciting activations have seen fans take part. Team Kikiri which is a fan favourite has left revelers asking for more because of the flair they bring to the Friday nights but there’s still a lot to play for. After Friday, there will be four rounds left to complete the season.

Onduparaka as KCCA plots to stay top

Who will blink first? Heathens tackle Kobs Rugby Premiership Fixtures Friday, November 30 Hima Cement Heathens vs Betway Kobs, Kyadondo 4:30pm

evitalised Express FC take on Onduparaka at Wankulukuku this weekend in the standout fixture of the Uganda Premier League, seeking to boost their top four aspirations. A point separates both sides with Onduparaka FC placed sixth while Express occupies seventh place. Kefa Kisala’s charges drew their last league fixture against Bright Stars whereas Onduparaka jumped Ndejje University’s hurdle in a 3-0 win.

Only eight games into the 2018-19 season, the campaign is already heating up and match day nine will start this Friday with two fixtures. The embattled camps of Nyamityobora and SC Villa will be facing off at Wankulukuku as both sides seek to get into winning rhythm and jump out of the relegation zone. Mbarara City, which enjoyed top of the table status for almost a week plays away to Police at StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo, where a win for Mbarara will see them go top with a point advantage over KCCA FC who play on Saturday.

With Vipers missing out on league action this weekend, KCCA on Saturday will have a chance to return to the top if they can win away to Maroons at the Prisons grounds. KCCA and Vipers are tied on points (18) but the Kasasiro boys have the superior goal advantage of +11 to the Venom’s six. In the weekend’s other games, bottom of the log Paidha Black Angels host Bright Stars in Arua, draw specialists URA play at home against Tooro United and Jinja University have a long trip to Luweero to battle struggling Ndejje University.

fter Hima Cement Heathens seeing off Black Pirates last weekend in a 13-3 win, they face another test this Friday against high flying Betway Kobs at Kyadondo. Despite both teams enjoying unbeaten runs, Kobs remain the only side with a bonus point from each of their first three games, having brushed past Rams 29-0 last weekend. Kobs will be looking to increase their grip on the top of the table as rivals Heathens battle not to slip against their rivals. DusuPay Warriors, which is also unbeaten, will be seeking to continue flying as they host winless Jinja Hippos. Shell Rimula Rhinos play at home against Toyota Buffaloes and Rams travel to Jinja to face Walukuba Barbarians. Wounded Black Pirates play on Saturday against Plascon Mongers and will be aiming to get back to winning ways.
