Museveni launches Shs300billion Kampala Flyover Project On Wednesday, President Museveni broke the ground for construction of a Shs300 billion Kampala Flyover project. The project kicks off in January 2019 and it will see a flyover cover Clock Tower, Shoprite, Nsambya to Mukwano junctions.The project will also entail improving the existing road structure including widening of the 0.5 kilometre Queens way and widening of Nsambya road. New pedestrian bridges are also expected to be put in place at Clock Tower, Kibuli and Shoprite whereas the two junctions at Clock Tower and Shoprite will also be worked on. Bobi Wine needs to change his ways, follow our guidelines — Police

Following the resignation of Jennifer S Musisi, Minister for Kampala Beti Kamya has assigned Engineer Andrew Kitaka Mubiru who is substantively the Director Engineering and Technical Services at KCCA duties of Executive Director KCCA. In her official statement, Kamya says she appointed Kitaka to enable continuity and smooth running of the city as the wait for President Museveni who is mandated by law to appoint the Executive Director.

Following proceedings in Parliament on Tuesday where the Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine reported to the Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga that the Uganda Police Force were unfairly and illegally blocking his music shows countrywide, the police have responded saying that he is not following the guidelines. According to police spokesperson Emilian Kayima, Bobi Wine has been adamant to follow the guidelines they gave him yet he agreed to them during an indoor meeting with high profile police officers at Naguru Headquarters before the Kyarenga Concert in early November.

It is for this simple reason that anyone you ask about how the year 2018 went for them, the responses will be completely different except for a few events that all Ugandans can agree were good, bad and ugly in that order. In the final issue the Matooke Republic, we revisit the moments we will live to remember about the 2018 and those that we would pay a kidney to forget.

THE GOOD

Let us begin on the bright side. Just before the year‘s curtains closed, Miss Uganda, Quiin Abenakyo returned to the country from China where she was crowned the Miss World Queen for the African continent. Abenakyo was two places away from being crowned the Miss World 2018 but nonetheless, her position was the best Uganda and Africa for that matter has ever reached in the history of the pageant. At just 22 years, Abenakyo is a graduate of Makerere University Business School made history as the first Uganda to ever reach the top 30 of the Miss World Finals later on emerge the second runner-up to win the top beauty queen of the African continent. Surely that is something to write home about. Uganda Airlines Besides Abenakyo, the government set plans in motion to revive the defunct national

THE UGLY

As the name suggests, these were more than just tragic. They were disasters that Ugandans would pay with the national cake to forget. The most recent being the Lake Victoria boat cruise accident that claimed over 30 lives. MV Templar sank near Mutima Island in Mukono district with over 120 people reportedly aboard. Although 27 people were rescued alive, over 60 still remain unaccounted for. Eyewitness accounts say that some of the rescued fled for the heels after reaching the shore while others claim that they might not have been on the boat in the first place.

Rakai school fire Parents are still wiping tears after 10 students are caught in a dormitory fire at St. Bernard’s Mannya Secondary School in Rakai district. The fire that was allegedly set by disgruntled students who had been expelled by the school also injured 30 other students in the process and destroyed property worth millions of shillings. Gun killings claim Abiriga, Kirumira In the same fashion with which they killed former Assistant Inspector General of Police, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi and a long list of Moslem Sheikhs, gunmen travelling by boda-boda claimed the lives of Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, his bodyguard Saidi Kongo and his driver just before his home in Kawanda, Wakiso district. In the same style, the gunmen also showered Buyende District Police Commander (DPC) Muhammad Kirumira and one Mbabazi Resty with whom he was travelling near his home in Bulenga, a Kampala Suburb. Arua Chaos Meanwhile in Arua where by-elections were underway to replace the slain Abiriga in parliament, ugly scenes erupted resulting into the death of Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi’s driver, Yasin Kawuma and the arrest and torture of several MPs, journalists and the members of the public – 33 of whom are still battling treason charges for pelting the presidential convoy with stones shuttering one of the lead car’s rear screen. Bududa landslides And to wrap the year was the second occurrence of the Bududa landslides claimed over 60 lives and displaced over 100 lives. The landslides which occurred in October also washed away a school with them and several homes of the

foothills of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. The government has since acquired land and resettled several people but the fear of more natural hazards still looms. As the year comes to an end, Ugandans hope for a better, prosperous and positive 2019 that will feature a revisit of Pope Francis I, the flight of Uganda Airlines after over 30 years and hopefully, a piece of silverware in the Afcon finals for the Uganda Cranes.

Comparing the spending habits and personality traits of over 2,100 people over the Christmas season, personality psychology researchers found significant relationships between spending amounts over the holiday season and specific personality traits. The study, “Who are the Scrooges? Personality Predictors of Holiday Spending,” appears in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. “We’ve known for a while that personality is related to what we call ‘broad outcomes:’ how much money you make or how happy you are or how long you live,” says co-lead author Sara Weston (Northwestern University), “but we know less about why personality is related to those things.” In their study, Weston, co-lead author Joe Gladstone (University College London), and colleagues show that personality traits are related to more specific spending behaviours, which should in turn impact the broad outcomes, like long term financial goals. In addition, those with more artistic interests and more active imaginations, those higher in openness, spend less during the holiday season while those low in openness spend more. The study also revealed those who are more careful spend more, and those who are less spend less. The scientists emphasise that personality is only one small part of consumer behavior, especially at the individual level. From household size to income and many other factors, there are numerous influences at the individual shopping level.

ith barely a week to Christmas, hearts everywhere are filled with excitement and joy. The preparations for the festival are already in full swing. Decorating Christmas trees, welcoming guests, singing carols, exchanging gifts, baking cakes and shopping food. On Christmas day, many people wake up early in dawn to prepare the best food for the family with a few sure whether by the time the family eat, the already cooked food will be safe for consumption. You have ever heard of people being hospitalised after eating contaminated food. Yes, it’s not news any more. Anyone can get food poisoning but most of us don’t think about food safety until someone we know get sick after eating contaminated food.

But what is food poisoning?

Food poisoning is an illness that comes as a result of eating contaminated, spoiled or toxic food. In most cases, the food is contaminated by

bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli or a virus such as the norovirus. The most common symptoms of food poisoning are fever, headaches, chills, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness and stomach cramps. The germs that cause food borne illnesses don’t taste or smell bad, so you may not know they are in your food.

How to avoid food poisoning

First and foremost, do the basics; wash hands, fruits and vegetables, counter tops and utensils well before you start cooking and between tasks. Keep raw and ready to eat foods separate when you shop, store and prepare food and keep food covered with a tight fitting lid. And lastly, cook foods to the recommended temperature - keep hot foods hot at 60oC or higher and foods that are supposed to be chilled first before they are served should be kept cold at 4oC or lower.

ALLOCATES 69TH GRADUATION DATES TO COLLEGES

he Academic Registrar of Makerere University, Dr. Alfred Namoah Masikye has gazzeted and allocated graduation dates to different colleges that are affiliated to the institution. The four days phased 69th graduation Ceremony is scheduled for January 2019. According to the provisional statistics, over 10216 students are set to graduate from the biggest Public University. These will be passed out upon full payment of Graduation, convocation, transcript, certificate and graduation gown fees whose figures of payment were released early in November, 2018. On Tuesday 15th January, 2019, a total of 2231 students will graduate from four colleges.

These include the College of Natural Sciences, College of Agriculture and Enviromental Sciences, College of Education and External Studies and the College of Health Sciences. Graduands from the College of Business and Management Sciences, College of Computing and Information Science and the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resource and Bio Security all totalling 2292 shall be passed out on 16th January, 2019. Makerere University Business School (MUBS) for the fact that it posseses a humongous number of students will have all its students solely awarded on 17th January 2019. Those approved to be graduating from MUBS are 3268 in number.

Finally, on Friday 18th January 2019, 2425 students from the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Law will graduate and close off the four days phased graduation ceremony. The graduands will receive Certificate, Diploma and Degree awards depending on the programmes that they pursued at the institution. The She Cranes captain has also won the league’s Player of the Season and the Vitality Player of the Season as well

TN Uganda will focus on innovations for digital payments for the 2018 edition of the MTN App Challenge, the telecom announced at the launch of this year’s competition on Thursday last week. The announcement of the competition’s very specific direction this year follows MTN’s move to open its Mobile Money APIs (application programing interface) on November 14 this year. This was then followed by the training of local developers on how to use the APIs. The challenge, the firm said, will allow local innovators to take advantage of the exposed API end points to digitize payments in their applications. “Over the years, we have supported local innovation through platforms like the MTN App Challenge and the MTN Innovation Awards. It is our intent to avail our infrastructure to be leveraged by local start-ups,” said Elsa Muzzolini, the MTN General Manager, Mobile Financial Services. The MTN official added that opening the Mobile Money API was further testimony to this intent.

“We are very excited to have our first challenge on the Open API platform under the theme “Building for digital payments”; we look forward to enabling the best innovators in Uganda to launch new applications which leverage the exposed APIs to digitize payments.” Unlike previous challenges, the MTN Open API challenge 2018 will be fully managed online. Participants will register to create applications in any of the following categories: Transport, HORECA (hotel, restaurant and café- food and catering service business) and Distribution in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) value chain. The challenge will run for a period of two months from December 13, 2018 to February 13, 2019, giving developers enough time to develop their idea into working applications. Participants in the challenge will automatically compete to benefit from the MTN start-up programme with winners receiving cash prizes as well as seed funding for their start-up. The winning apps will be awarded in March 2019 after the judging process has been completed. MTN Uganda is executing the Challenge in partnership with the Innovation Village.

Zama explodes as City Oilers dominate again

he basketball fraternity this year was served a balanced treat as they enjoyed both the thinkable and the unthinkable. The thinkable, as you might have guessed, was City Oilers extending their dominance, but who knew what JKL Lady Dolphins had in store for UCU Lady Canons in the lady’s championship? City Oilers equal record champions Falcons Moneybags City Oilers made it six titles in six finals in the Tusker Lite National Basketball League best of seven final playoffs. The Oilers managed to beat Betway Power to match record winners Falcons, who bounced back into the top division this year. Oilers tipped off on the wrong note in the final playoffs by suffering an 83-72 defeat, but recovered in emphatic style to win the next four games in the series and claim the title with a convincing 4-1 series win. A year to remember for the JKL Lady Dolphins 2018 will forever be boldly marked in the history books of JKL Lady Dolphins. The Lady Dolphins tipped off their season on a high and rode all way to top the lady’s summit in the regular season. Reaching the final, the Lady Dolphins did not slow down as expected, eventually claiming their maiden top division crown. Despite fears of UCU Lady Canons spoiling their heroic campaign given their dominance in the past three consecutive seasons, Dolphins stood

their ground and handed the basketball fraternity a shocker by sweeping UCU 4-0. Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi explodes Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi made 2018 her own. After playing a pivotal role in guiding JKL Lady Dolphins to their maiden title as she scored at least 20 points in each game, the shooting guard caught attention of Kenyan outfit Kenya Ports Authority that included her on their roster for the FIBA Africa Basketball Women Championship in Maputo, Mozambique. Teams opt out of Zone V championship City Oilers, KIU Titans, KCCA Leopards and UCU Lady Canons are the teams that had to represent Uganda at the annual FIBA Africa Zone V Club Basketball Championship that happened in Tanzania September 30 to October 7. Yet, only the Lady Canons made it to the event as the rest opted not to take part. Titans were the first to opt out citing lack of funds. Tournament defending champions Oilers followed suit, this time saying they had limited time for preps. KCCA Leopards soon followed, but gave no official reason.
