2018 I Flashback

The good, the bad and the built with state-of-the-art technology with a lifespan of 120 years.

BY ALEX TAREMWA

U

sing the immortal words of the Blacklist series star, Raymond Reddington, humans might all have 24 hours a day but they certainly go through them very differently. It is for this simple reason that anyone you ask about how the year 2018 went for them, the responses will be completely different except for a few events that all Ugandans can agree were good, bad and ugly in that order. In the final issue the Matooke Republic, we revisit the moments we will live to remember about the 2018 and those that we would pay a kidney to forget.

THE GOOD

Let us begin on the bright side. Just before the year‘s curtains closed, Miss Uganda, Quiin Abenakyo returned to the country from China where she was crowned the Miss World Queen for the African continent. Abenakyo was two places away from being crowned the Miss World 2018 but nonetheless, her position was the best Uganda and Africa for that matter has ever reached in the history of the pageant. At just 22 years, Abenakyo is a graduate of Makerere University Business School made history as the first Uganda to ever reach the top 30 of the Miss World Finals later on emerge the second runner-up to win the top beauty queen of the African continent. Surely that is something to write home about. Uganda Airlines Besides Abenakyo, the government set plans in motion to revive the defunct national

Sport/Showbiz After breaking the 39-year jinx without playing in the African Cup of Nations last year, the Uganda Cranes for the second year in a row qualified early for next year AFCON finals whose host is still being sought after Cameroon was disqualified. To put the icing on the cake, the team captain, Denis Onyango was nominated for the CAF Awards for the third year running as the Player of the Year whereas Uganda Cranes made three-team shortlist for the Team of the Year. Speaking of awards, Bebe Cool brought home the AFRIMMA award for the Best Male Artiste in East Africa at the gala held in Ghana while his nemeses Bobi Wine and Eddy Kenzo named among Africa Most Influential People and Best African Musician respectively.

airliner – the Uganda Airlines and even went ahead to cement the plans by ordering for four brand-new four new CRJ900 regional jets from Canadian firm, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. If all goes by plan, Uganda Airlines will commence in-bound flights in East Africa in March 2019 before expanding routes to across the world – a move that is expected to promote tourism, increase government revenue and help promote the country’s brand worldwide. Innovations In terms of innovation, Uganda proved that it can compete on the global I.T market as local software applications, SafeBoda, M-Scan and Matibabu won global and continental awards for best innovation. SafeBoda, the ride hailing application was awarded as the best App in Africa at the AppAfrica Awards in South Africa for its revolutionary transport solutions whereas M-Scan won $250,000 in the Battlefield Award for changing the approach through which maternal mortality can be fought in Uganda. Similarly, Brian Gitta’s Matibabu – a bloodless test for Malaria won $33,000 after winning the Royal Academy Engineering Prize for Africa. Infrastructure Being the engine that runs any economy, Uganda’s commitment to infrastructural development cannot be underestimated. This year, Uganda National Roads Authority commissioned the 51.4-kilometre

BAD

As the Luganda saying goes that even at a wedding, uncouth people are invited, so did the unfortunate happen in between the good news. Several accidents claimed lives of fellow Ugandans but the most tragic must be the Kiryandongo accident that claimed 22 lives. Government declared three days of national mourning in memory of the accident victims. It is only rivaled by the Kapchorwa bus accident that claimed 20 lives of staff of an NGO from Kiryandongo still that were coming from a three-day excursion at Sipi Falls.

be a bluff whereas others ended up in brutal murders like that of Suzan Magara, Barbara Zalwago who worked for UBA bank among several others. The year also brought with the deaths of several public figures including music maestro, Mowzey Radio of the GoodLyfe Crew who died in a bar brawl, DP aficionado, Ssebaana Kizito, rally ace Charles Muhangi, Comedian King Kong MC, former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo among others. There were also evictions in Lusanja

ugly of the year 2018 that the government has since reversed and several cases of flooding, heavy rains that destroyed people homes and increased levels of poverty that also hit the country at different intervals across the year.

THE UGLY

As the name suggests, these were more than just tragic. They were disasters that Ugandans would pay with the national cake to forget. The most recent being the Lake Victoria boat cruise accident that claimed over 30 lives. MV Templar sank near Mutima Island in Mukono district with over 120 people reportedly aboard. Although 27 people were rescued alive, over 60 still remain unaccounted for. Eyewitness accounts say that some of the rescued fled for the heels after reaching the shore while others claim that they might not have been on the boat in the first place.

Rakai school fire Parents are still wiping tears after 10 students are caught in a dormitory fire at St. Bernard’s Mannya Secondary School in Rakai district. The fire that was allegedly set by disgruntled students who had been expelled by the school also injured 30 other students in the process and destroyed property worth millions of shillings. Gun killings claim Abiriga, Kirumira In the same fashion with which they killed former Assistant Inspector General of Police, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi and a long list of Moslem Sheikhs, gunmen travelling by boda-boda claimed the lives of Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, his bodyguard Saidi Kongo and his driver just before his home in Kawanda, Wakiso district. In the same style, the gunmen also showered Buyende District Police Commander (DPC) Muhammad Kirumira and one Mbabazi Resty with whom he was travelling near his home in Bulenga, a Kampala Suburb. Arua Chaos Meanwhile in Arua where by-elections were underway to replace the slain Abiriga in parliament, ugly scenes erupted resulting into the death of Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi’s driver, Yasin Kawuma and the arrest and torture of several MPs, journalists and the members of the public – 33 of whom are still battling treason charges for pelting the presidential convoy with stones shuttering one of the lead car’s rear screen. Bududa landslides And to wrap the year was the second occurrence of the Bududa landslides claimed over 60 lives and displaced over 100 lives. The landslides which occurred in October also washed away a school with them and several homes of the

foothills of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. The government has since acquired land and resettled several people but the fear of more natural hazards still looms. As the year comes to an end, Ugandans hope for a better, prosperous and positive 2019 that will feature a revisit of Pope Francis I, the flight of Uganda Airlines after over 30 years and hopefully, a piece of silverware in the Afcon finals for the Uganda Cranes.

Living I Relating

HOW TO KEEP YOUR MAN IN A GIFT BOX THIS FESTIVE SEASON

SCI-FACT Emotionally stable people spend more during the festive holidays- study

N relate Unlocking the matters of the heart

BY RACHEAL KULANYI

E

very lady has the desire to discover the secret of a man’s soul and keep him on his toes. The good news about being a woman is that you can either achieve what you want by playing smart or by playing dumb. The card is yours to play. Remember most man love an intelligent woman. Choose the right joker. Men love a challenge. It’s only after reading John Eldredge’s insightful book Wild at Heart that I realised that good answers exist if good questions are asked. Deep down every man longs for an adventure to live for. Be as unpredictable as possible. Don’t try to change him, challenge him

into being a better man. Love is like an earthquake. It erupts. What matters is how to keep the candle burning after the phase of being in love burns out. Men easily get bored. Your duty as his lady is how to keep him entertained. Don’t get comfortable. Keep doing the things that got him attracted to you in the first place. A male friend once confessed that ladies who dub turn him on. If your man fell for you because you were a dancer, don’t stop dancing. Don’t ask for too much. Appreciate what’s given to you. I know of a married man who tries so hard to spend time with his side chic. She knows her place in his life and is less dramatic about it. Both you and your partner will be happy. As women we are naturally attracted to

the wild side of a man. But when we get the man we try to cage him. No man wants to be caged. You don’t have to try to tame a full grown man. Instead, love him with all his imperfections and love will definitely tame him for you. Don’t ask yourself what your man needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive because what your man needs is a woman who is alive. So be happy, because happiness is contagious. Be happy and your man will yearn to spend time with you. There’s something fascinating about independent ladies. No one wants to spend time with an insecure woman, but it is okay, really, to be vulnerable. It makes your man feel like the knight in shining armour straight out of the movies.

ew research suggests more emotionally stable people spend more during the holiday season, and people who are nervous and have a lower stress-threshold (also known as higher neuroticism) spend less during the holiday season. Comparing the spending habits and personality traits of over 2,100 people over the Christmas season, personality psychology researchers found significant relationships between spending amounts over the holiday season and specific personality traits. The study, “Who are the Scrooges? Personality Predictors of Holiday Spending,” appears in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. “We’ve known for a while that personality is related to what we call ‘broad outcomes:’ how much money you make or how happy you are or how long you live,” says co-lead author Sara Weston (Northwestern University), “but we know less about why personality is related to those things.” In their study, Weston, co-lead author Joe Gladstone (University College London), and colleagues show that personality traits are related to more specific spending behaviours, which should in turn impact the broad outcomes, like long term financial goals. Aggregating more than 2 million individual transactions from 2,133 participants’ bank accounts, the study showed people who are more emotionally stable spend more over the holidays while those high in neuroticism spend less over the same time period. In addition, those with more artistic interests and more active imaginations, those higher in openness, spend less during the holiday season while those low in openness spend more. The study also revealed those who are more careful spend more, and those who are less spend less. The scientists emphasise that personality is only one small part of consumer behavior, especially at the individual level. From household size to income and many other factors, there are numerous influences at the individual shopping level.

HEALTH Don’t let food poisoning spoil your Christmas party this year BY BRIAN EGWALU

W

ith barely a week to Christmas, hearts everywhere are filled with excitement and joy. The preparations for the festival are already in full swing. Decorating Christmas trees, welcoming guests, singing carols, exchanging gifts, baking cakes and shopping food. On Christmas day, many people wake up early in dawn to prepare the best food for the family with a few sure whether by the time the family eat, the already cooked food will be safe for consumption. You have ever heard of people being hospitalised after eating contaminated food. Yes, it’s not news any more. Anyone can get food poisoning but most of us don’t think about food safety until someone we know get sick after eating contaminated food.

But what is food poisoning?

Food poisoning is an illness that comes as a result of eating contaminated, spoiled or toxic food. In most cases, the food is contaminated by

bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli or a virus such as the norovirus. The most common symptoms of food poisoning are fever, headaches, chills, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness and stomach cramps. The germs that cause food borne illnesses don’t taste or smell bad, so you may not know they are in your food.

How to avoid food poisoning

First and foremost, do the basics; wash hands, fruits and vegetables, counter tops and utensils well before you start cooking and between tasks. Keep raw and ready to eat foods separate when you shop, store and prepare food and keep food covered with a tight fitting lid. And lastly, cook foods to the recommended temperature - keep hot foods hot at 60oC or higher and foods that are supposed to be chilled first before they are served should be kept cold at 4oC or lower.

SIDE STRIPE PANTS Artiste H

ow would you describe your style? I describe my style as urban African. From the music, hairstyle and fashion, it’s all a fusion of a strong African identity put together with modern western feel. What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I think I am too fond of shades/glasses.

I

f you are at that point where you feel you have exhausted all you can with the crop pants, here comes the side stripe pants. These pants not only come with a great fit, when you choose the right size, they make for the perfect athleisure outfit. You can choose these in different colour block options, depending on what your style preferences are. If you are more into the laid back looks, the black trouser with a white side stripe will work like magic for you. If you are the more daring kind with your style, green trousers with a red stripe should be perfect for you. You can accessorize these with a simple tee and clean low cut sneakers. For a more laid back look, slide sandals should be good enough.

What is your worst buy ever? I recently bought a leather tights for my music video(serial killer) but they never made it to set,so disappointing how they looked on me. They are now on sale. What styling trick works for you all the time? A simple flared obove knee height dress, with heels, and turbans. That combination never goes wrong for me. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? You would probably land on only one skirt out of the thousands of clothings I own. Then you won’t find any flat shoes at all and no velvet fabrics.

friend of mine from West Africa once told me something very profound: “In our family, we come from a lineage of kings that once ruled throughout our region. As young members of this ancient royal family, we underwent secret training on how to act and behave as a royal. Although the kingship was ended by colonial governments, we still undergo the training even today.” “Can you share with me some of the secrets of this training?” I asked him, out of curiosity. “It’s really a mindset thing. A royal must maintain dignity and poise at all times, particularly when provoked. A royal mindset does not allow you to deride or belittle someone simply because you disagree with them. The use of insults in an argument is very undignified.” “Anything else?” I asked as I took down some notes. “As a public figure, some weak-minded people will always try and goad you into a response that causes you to lose your cool and get into a brawl with them, rather like little boys fighting in a school yard.” “Don’t fall for it,” he said. “Who is this ‘weak-minded’ person?” I asked. “Someone who has no capacity to disagree without being disagreeable in their manner of approach.” “A king or queen must weigh carefully every word they say, as though it is made of gold. That is how they get their respect. No shouting and no impulsive response in anger.” Then he added this observation: “If you meet any member of my tribe, even young people, they all behave in the same way, because they learnt it from the royals. We are known for our dignity and poise.” After reflecting on some of the things he had said, I finally said to him: “You know, I have the same training, too.” “Are you also from a royal African family?” he asked. “No, not at all. It’s just that I study the Bible every morning, and it compels me, to speak, think and act that way.” “Ehehe.” It was his turn to ask questions... Now speaking of royal African families, I chose this picture today because, as some of you may know, there’s a historic music concert called “The Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100” which will take place in Soweto, South Africa this Sunday 2 December to commemorate 100 years since Nelson Mandela’s birth. Sunday’s event (amongst others over recent years) has been put together by an international group called Globalcitizen.org, sponsored by a large cross-section of large private sector companies and NGOs, together with a few foundations, both local and international.

TN Uganda will focus on innovations for digital payments for the 2018 edition of the MTN App Challenge, the telecom announced at the launch of this year’s competition on Thursday last week. The announcement of the competition’s very specific direction this year follows MTN’s move to open its Mobile Money APIs (application programing interface) on November 14 this year. This was then followed by the training of local developers on how to use the APIs. The challenge, the firm said, will allow local innovators to take advantage of the exposed API end points to digitize payments in their applications. “Over the years, we have supported local innovation through platforms like the MTN App Challenge and the MTN Innovation Awards. It is our intent to avail our infrastructure to be leveraged by local start-ups,” said Elsa Muzzolini, the MTN General Manager, Mobile Financial Services. The MTN official added that opening the Mobile Money API was further testimony to this intent.

“We are very excited to have our first challenge on the Open API platform under the theme “Building for digital payments”; we look forward to enabling the best innovators in Uganda to launch new applications which leverage the exposed APIs to digitize payments.” Unlike previous challenges, the MTN Open API challenge 2018 will be fully managed online. Participants will register to create applications in any of the following categories: Transport, HORECA (hotel, restaurant and café- food and catering service business) and Distribution in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) value chain. The challenge will run for a period of two months from December 13, 2018 to February 13, 2019, giving developers enough time to develop their idea into working applications. Participants in the challenge will automatically compete to benefit from the MTN start-up programme with winners receiving cash prizes as well as seed funding for their start-up. The winning apps will be awarded in March 2019 after the judging process has been completed. MTN Uganda is executing the Challenge in partnership with the Innovation Village.

Zama explodes as City Oilers dominate again

BY WILLIAM KASOBA

T

he basketball fraternity this year was served a balanced treat as they enjoyed both the thinkable and the unthinkable. The thinkable, as you might have guessed, was City Oilers extending their dominance, but who knew what JKL Lady Dolphins had in store for UCU Lady Canons in the lady’s championship? City Oilers equal record champions Falcons Moneybags City Oilers made it six titles in six finals in the Tusker Lite National Basketball League best of seven final playoffs. The Oilers managed to beat Betway Power to match record winners Falcons, who bounced back into the top division this year. Oilers tipped off on the wrong note in the final playoffs by suffering an 83-72 defeat, but recovered in emphatic style to win the next four games in the series and claim the title with a convincing 4-1 series win. A year to remember for the JKL Lady Dolphins 2018 will forever be boldly marked in the history books of JKL Lady Dolphins. The Lady Dolphins tipped off their season on a high and rode all way to top the lady’s summit in the regular season. Reaching the final, the Lady Dolphins did not slow down as expected, eventually claiming their maiden top division crown. Despite fears of UCU Lady Canons spoiling their heroic campaign given their dominance in the past three consecutive seasons, Dolphins stood

their ground and handed the basketball fraternity a shocker by sweeping UCU 4-0. Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi explodes Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi made 2018 her own. After playing a pivotal role in guiding JKL Lady Dolphins to their maiden title as she scored at least 20 points in each game, the shooting guard caught attention of Kenyan outfit Kenya Ports Authority that included her on their roster for the FIBA Africa Basketball Women Championship in Maputo, Mozambique. Zama did not disappoint as she emerged top scorer, averaging 17.1 points in four games en route to being named on the FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup All-star team. Silverbacks World cup dream shattered Not everything was smooth sailing though. With improved performances in the Afrobasket, the Uganda National Basket-

ball team—the Silverbacks—this year targeted a dream qualification to the FIBA 2019 World Cup in China. The Silverback put up a spirited first round showing which got them into the next qualifying stage. However, the second round did not go as planned and our dream qualification plans were shattered with a 92-79 loss against rivals Rwanda.

Teams opt out of Zone V championship City Oilers, KIU Titans, KCCA Leopards and UCU Lady Canons are the teams that had to represent Uganda at the annual FIBA Africa Zone V Club Basketball Championship that happened in Tanzania September 30 to October 7. Yet, only the Lady Canons made it to the event as the rest opted not to take part. Titans were the first to opt out citing lack of funds. Tournament defending champions Oilers followed suit, this time saying they had limited time for preps. KCCA Leopards soon followed, but gave no official reason.

Vipers, KCCA and Uganda Cranes reign supreme Football is undisputedly the most loved sport in Uganda and for its multitude of fans 2018 was a year of drama, heartbreaks and landmark moments. William Kasoba relives the most unforgettable moments in the world of local football. KCCA’s walk of fame to Champions League Group Stage Many might feel like years have passed since KCCA FC made us proud. But guess what, it was only March 17, 2018; a date that will forever be a reference in the history books of KCCA FC and Uganda. That day, the 12-time league champions became the first Ugandan club to progress to the Caf Champions League group stage. The 1-0 win against St George at Lugogo ensured KCCA FC made history. Vipers beat KCCA to league title, Kasasiro boys revenge in Uganda Cup Fans of Vipers Sports Club and KCCA had to wait until the final day to know which way the title goes. It was a thrilling end to a closely contested championship as even on the last day Vipers had to come from a goal down in the final game to confirm their supremacy over KCCA. Their rivals neverthe-

Cranes make Afcon finals their new ‘home’ After breaking the 39-year jinx and qualifying for the 2017 Afcon finals in Gabon, the football fraternity can now be forgiven if they take a spot at the continent’s table of men for granted. With new head coach Sebastien Desabre in charge, the Uganda Cranes still ensured it was normal service as they secured qualification to the 2019 finals in impressive style, with a game to spare and no goals conceded after five rounds.

nother weekend of continental football is on this Saturday and history beckons as Vipers Sports Club and Kampala City Council Authority FC play CS Constantine and Mtibwa Sugar in the Caf

Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup respectively. Vipers has the bigger battle to fight as it will need a 2-0 win at St Mary’s Stadium to make certain a place in the Caf Champions League group stage for the first time. Having lost by a goal to nil in last week’s first leg in Algeria, the Venoms camp will be boosted by the return of skipper Tadeo Lwanga and defender Geoffrey Wasswa. A goalkeeping puzzle remains, however, as Burundian goaltender Fabien Mutombora is yet to recover, while Bashir Ssekagya also sustained a knock in last week’s 1-0 defeat. Derrick Ochan is the most likely option.

Should Vipers manage to overturn the result, For KCCA FC who were 3-0 winners against Mtibwa Sugar Sports Club in a CAF Confederation Cup first game played at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo last weekend, the task is lighter ahead of the second leg trip to Dar es Salaam the same weekend. Should Mike Mutebi’s charges go past the Tanzanians, they will be left with one more round of qualifiers where they would have an opportunity to make it to the group stages of continental competitions for the third straight year.

ollowing a week-long break for most of the teams in the Rugby Premiership race, the rugby fraternity will this weekend have it all as teams battle for early festive season advantage. Being the early Saturday kick-off, high flying and second placed DUSUPAY Warriors will be hoping to re-enjoy top of table for the second time this season as it faces Toyota Buffaloes. However, with hardboiled Hima Cement Heathens playing against Walukuba Barbarian, Warriors will not have enough time to warm the top spot if all fixtures go as anticipated. The rugby festive cracker will be the game between Black Pirates and Betway Kobs at Legends. Both sides will be battling to stay in sight with the top pack of Heathens and Warriors. The sides last met this year in the Uganda Cup final where Kobs made light of Pirates’ dominance to win the game 20-14. After that final, Pirates’ tactician Bob Musinguzi said; “Definitely we will be back and whoever thinks that we are weak should wait for us in the league.” The wait gets over this Saturday.
