Government to introduce boat ambulances The Ministry of Health is set to introduce boat ambulances next year as it was included amongst the major priorities in the next financial year 2019/2020 budget. Dr John Nambohe, the ministry’s commissioner of Emergency Medical Services, said there are huge gaps in emergency response on water bodies whenever disasters hit, which leads to many preventable deaths, citing the recent boat cruise accident that claimed more than 30 lives. Parliament to honour Quiin Abenakyo in special sitting

Following a revelation from local health coordinators that there will be a scarcity of condoms as Ugandans approach the festive season, MPs led by Mbale Municipality’s Wamai Wamanga tasked the State Minister of Health for General Duties, Sarah Achieng Opendi to explain whether the country has enough condoms in stock. According to Opendi, the ministry has adequate supplies of condoms but they are holding them for one reason; to teach the youth abstinence.

Conspiracy I Crime

BY ALEX TAREMWA

T

he Rally Ace Charles Muhangi died last week in mysterious circumstances and was laid to rest on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at his ancestral home in Bushenyi district. However, before his death, Muhangi had been locked in a legal battle with city tycoons, Drake Lubega and ‘Hajji Mansour Matovu specifically over several plots that house Qualicell Bus Terminal – the place he had renamed to ‘Bazanyanengo’ (they are playing with a Leopard) before passing on. Although much is known about the legal battle and the controversies that surround the land in question, little has been said about how the mess that led to the controversy started. Matooke Republic has unearthed proof that shows how Muhangi’s lawyer, Geoffrey Nangumya of Geoffrey Nangumya and Co Advocates led a conspiracy against his boss to sell Qualicell to Drake without his consent. How it started In 1999, Kampala City Council – the precursor to the current Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) issued an advert in the press that Qualicell Bus Park was up for sale to someone who would develop it into a modern facility. At the time, the Uganda Bus Operators Association (UBOA) – in which Muhangi was a senior member, given that he owned several buses under the Horizon brand was in charge of the park. “Because UBOA and a big and disorganized group, when we saw the advert in the paper, I talked to some of the members and we curved an independent club that would procure and develop Qualicell. We called the club UBOA Investment Limited,” the late Muhangi said on a radio talk show in Kampala. Muhangi had 65% shares in the eight member investment club while the other seven shared the remaining 35% amongst themselves. They started the bidding process in 2000 and were issued a tender to start developing the park in 2002. At the development phase, Muhangi said that the club needed to pool money together but none of the other shareholders had money to invest. They unanimously resolved to sell their remaining shares to him giving him 100% control of UBOA Investment Limited. The process went on from 2004 to late 2005 when Muhangi finally resolved to develop the park as an individual given that both his transport business and KCC tender depended on it. Lawyer Nangumya comes in One of the eight members of UBOA Limited was Lawyer Nangumya who, according to Muhangi also worked for him for 12 years. It was this lawyer who went behind Muhangi’s back, reconvened the original members of UBOA Limited and resold the Qualicell land to city tycoon Drake Lubega. “He called a secret meeting which I didn’t know, invited the old members of UBOA Investments and Lubega and they sold my land. “I had already bought 12 tractors and a stone quarry in Katayi from Zion Constructions ready to start construction of the park and the war started. They made a letter of consent in Court that UBOA Limited had run out of money and failed to develop the park and that the

company had unanimously agreed to sell to Lubega,” the late Muhangi narrated. From the consent letter, they made an eviction order kicking the Landlord, KCC and UBOA yet Horizon was the one on ground. Muhangi explained that from 2006 to 2007, Horizon had over 40 court cases on the same land. Eventually, he was pushed out and consequently, Lubega started setting up shopping malls and other properties as Muhangi battled to get his land back – a

battle he had won before his death returning to himself, the ownership of the bus park. Nangumya though is not new to controversy; the lawyer was suspended for six months by the Uganda Law Society in 2009 for illegal gross professional misconduct after he illegally repossessed a bus which had been confiscated by court and in the process, assaulted Allen Janyare, the complainant. In July 2018, the Uganda Law Council suspended Nangumya again for using a client’s money to the tune of Shs63m which

he picked without the client’s consent and using it for himself. Some of his prominent known clients are tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba – a close friend to Muhangi, Panamera’s Desh Kananura among others. By the time of his death, Muhangi had said that Lubega owed him over $20m in rent and other damages. Although he didn’t want to sell the land, Muhangi has set $150m as the asking price should Lubega and Mansoor desire buy him out.

BEBE COOL WASIBUKAWA

A

fter three months of musical silence, Bebe Cool returned to the Pearl of Africa not only with the AFRIMA awards accolade but also with the release of what we might call the best video of the year 2018 - Wasibukawa. Time and time again, the Nsilikamu

singer reminds us that he is still a legend in the musical industry in Uganda. The Wasibukawa video was directed by Sasha Vybz, produced by Daddy Andre, and shot in the USA. The video starts with a refreshing view of Los Angeles, California and the magnificent Venice Beach which makes anyone watching the video to stay hooked. What’s interesting is that in this video, Gagamel boss keeps a smooth composure as he lets off fresh vibes, vintage riding around the streets of the States. What’s more to it is his wardrobe choice - the “Make Peace Not War” jacket is an accessory that speaks deeply to each Ugandan especially after the bottle throwing scenario at the Tarrus Riley concert. Known for his exceptional music video quality, Bebe Cool did justice to Wasibukawa. From the very first second of the song, you’ll be serenaded and swayed by the video and the poetic lyrics. This makes the song a perfect chill zone song that is not only going to take the bar by storm but your sitting room too.

The shocking facts about the office Christmas party

D

id you ever stop to think that the office Christmas party could be more dangerous to your marriage or relationship than you ever considered? The statistics certainly suggest so, and when alcohol is served at these parties, these annual office binges can be a catalyst for workplace infidelity. According to a survey by Men’s Health magazine, 44% of males said that they have had an affair with a co-worker at a holiday office party at least once, while 49% of employees have expressed willingness to “go all the way” with a co-worker at a holiday party if the opportunity presented itself, another survey by Trojan Condoms revealed. It gets worse: 33% of the respondents in the same survey confessed that they have had sex with a fellow employee during or after an office Christmas party, while a third of workers have either kissed or gone home with a colleague after the holiday party in a survey conducted by Canon. In addition, 33% of men have said they were interested in getting more ‘personal’ with their co-worker at the office holiday party, while one out of every four female employees surveyed said their boss has made a pass at them at holiday parties. In another survey conducted by Party411.com, 20% of the survey takers agreed that many extramarital affairs have begun at the office Christmas party, while 64% of office workers said they knew of affairs that had begun at the office Christmas party. And according to an online survey by Tickle.com, 41% of employees said they would flirt back if a work colleague hit on them during a Christmas party, while one in every four people said they had hooked up with someone at the office holiday party in another survey. If your partner is in the 18-30 age bracket, look away now. Nearly half, 41% of them admitted that they had hooked up with a fellow employee at an annual holiday party, with 13% actually having sex at the party but only 6% of them getting caught! Yet, if you are a man who needs to console himself, 33% of women employees admitted to having an affair after their office party fling but only 13% were still romantically involved with their fling a year later.

CHRISTMAS IP GOALS RELATIONSH

BY RACHEAL KULANYI

F

rom Jan-worry to December, 2018 has been a rollercoaster ride. It has been a cocktail of loss, gain, sadness and happiness. But now is the opportunity for you and bae to rekindle things and strengthen your bond. We will assume that visiting either partner’s parents and having Christmas is not going to be particularly high on your to-do list this festive season, unless of course walking down the aisle is your number one resolution for 2019. Now that that is cleared, here are some Christmas relationship goals for you to spice things up.

Prepare a meal together

Whether it’s preparing your favourite meal or baking cake together, food unites people. You not only get to spend time together in the kitchen but you also get the chance to celebrate the success of making a delicious meal, and who knows, you might sneak a quickie in, right there in the kitchen, as you bring the potatoes to boil.

Travel together

What is a relationship without the opportunity to check out wonderful places together? There are few things to help you bond as discovering the beauty of your country, or the world as a couple. Travel to new places and make life-long memories. You could even throw in camping for good measure.

Play together

One thing that makes your relationship a relationship and not a partnership is the fact that you two are able to have fun and be insane together. Find a sitcom or board games like scrabble that you both enjoy. Playing together will help you feel more at ease with each other as a couple and that can only be a good thing, no?

Do tech free ‘connection time’

A good relationship requires the couple to invest time. Over time that might be something we start to take for granted. Make it your goal this Christmas to spend time together away

from social media and work and focus on just yourselves. Give Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp a break and devote all that attention to your man or woman. Thank me later.

Recreate your first date

For your Christmas dinner, how about recreating the events of your first date together? Right from what you were wearing, to the restaurant and the meal you had. Redoing your first date all over again is as romantic a gesture as they come and will sure rekindle your relationship, while also reminding you what attracted you to that person in the first place.

Trends I Slaying I Killing It

TREND ALERT! Hauer K PLAID PRINT P

rints are timeless, that’s for sure. And no trend will help you achieve a playful look like prints. Today’s fashion recommendation is the plaid print. Whether you choose to have it on head to toe, or as separates, you are going to have a stylish look with this. For option one, you could have on your plaid print pants, in red, worn over your black blouse, and a pair of heels to complete. Or you could decide to wear your plaid print top, over a pleated skirt in a warm shade, and finish this off with a pair of sneakers to keep the playful element in the outfit going. For the guys, it would be safe to keep this print on your blazers, caps, or even pocket squares. Anything out of this will have you looking like a clown!

Fashionista

H

ow would you describe your style? My style is chic and bold. I always love trying out new stuff as I put my authentic feel to it, while not letting go of my originality. I mean I wear anything no body likes to wear and I make it look pretty. Never scared to try anything new. Anything looks ugly until you try it. What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I can’t live without a pair of black heels. They save the day, plus they are a total classic that never goes out of style. What is your worst buy ever? That would have to be the Harem pants. Thank God that trend is dead and gone! What styling trick works for you all the time? I can’t share all my secrets but I sometimes add accessories to instantly polish my look. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Neon pair of jeans!

GROWING WEALTH

BY PAUL JJEMBA

I

f anyone needed a speedy definition of go-getter, a glance at Edward Waiswa Nyende might do the trick. While he pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration degree at Ndejje University, the young man from Kawempe still found time to moonlight as a radio presenter at Bamboo FM. The moment he graduated, Edward, who is now aged 32, decided he would venture into farming straight away, having been enticed by friends into heliculture (cultivating snails). The idea of job hunting just did not sit well with him. Cultivating snails turned out to be a very successful investment for Edward, so much so that he was able to realise profits of more than Shs2m towards the end of 2016. “I scored good sales from snails after having got connections with a number of traders from nearby African countries, I made about Shs2.5m in profit. I was compelled to look for another venture into which I could to invest,” he explained. Turning to a three-acre piece of land he had earlier bought in Luwero district, Edward dived straight into growing yams at the Ebenezer Mixed Farm he had just set up. “I used about Shs1.5m to buy yam stems and clearing the field. Each yam stem cost me

Shs300. I bought 15000 stems and that was for only one acre,” Edward told us, adding that unlike other root crops, each yam stem once planted yields only one tuber and this means the quantity of yams harvested directly depends on the number of stems which have been planted. According to Edward, yams are grown in a hole of approximately 1ft deep and 0.5ft wide to ensure the tuber is given enough space to grow downwards. Inside the hole, he adds organic manure of rabbit and chicken droppings, collected from his farm. He also dug water tunnels and constructed water supply systems on the field to ensure

consistent water supply owing to the fact that his field is not in a wetland yet yams thrive most in waterlogged places. “Yams take six months to mature and from the very time of harvesting we begin to count a new season since we plant in new stems immediately after harvest,” he explained.

Profitable

According to Edward, yams are one of the best-selling food crops because only a few farmers grow them, making their demand in markets so high. The Luwero-based farmer recalled how buyers from Nakasero, Kalwere and other markets camped at his farm for almost a week during the season of harvest. What is certain is that it was financially a very rewarding time for Edward, as he recalled earning profits of as much as Shs15m. He also advised that the size of the harvested yams matters a lot when it comes to pricing. The smallest yam can cost Shs1000 whereas the big-sized yam goes for up to Shs4000. From one acre of land, the Ebenezer Mixed Farm owner said he can make sales of at least Shs15m. That is not to say he does not encounter challenges, highlighting a problem of thieves that invade the farm, watering being costly and the high cost of seedlings. His success has enabled him secure additional acres of land near his farm, on which he also rears rabbits, goats and poultry, and employs more than 30 staff.

ne of our members on this platform commented a few days ago that he thinks “ideas are overrated.” I took a little while to reflect on this comment, and then I came to the conclusion that he has a point. While there is really nearly nothing more exciting in this world than believing you have a totally original idea that no one, now or before, has ever had, the idea is only a start... When it happens, you must apply for a patent, copyright or trademark so that others can pay you license fees for using your idea. That’s all good, but it’s not the only thing entrepreneurship is about: You can still be a very successful entrepreneur, even if you are not the originator of the idea, if you are able to adopt and adapt something successfully for your own market (of course, respecting Intellectual Property. If you don’t know what that is, it’s part of your homework). I wish I could tell you that I invented mobile phones. I didn’t, and neither did anyone who makes money from them today. When I was a student engineer at college, I remember discussing mobile phones with my professors. The first commercial systems started being available in the 1970’s in the USA. Aliko Dangote did not invent cement, nor was he the first person in Nigeria to think about building a cement plant. What sets him apart is his entrepreneurial capacity to execute skillfully, using #People and #Process. What is a McDonald’s? Is it not a hamburger that can be cooked in your mother’s kitchen? Yet someone took that humble burger, and turned it into a global business with a market capitalization last week of $140bn+. If McDonald’s was a country, it would be bigger than most African countries, except for Nigeria and South Africa. How did this happen? Was the “idea” of a hamburger a new one at the time? Well, you tell me... Now there is not a single African company today as big as McDonald’s. Or even half the size of McDonald’s. Why?! Why?! The “hamburger” was not an original idea invented by McDonald’s. The guy who built the billion-dollar burger company was a master of #Process! And what else? You can build a million-dollar enterprise in almost anything you can imagine. Even if it is collecting rubbish on the street, there are guys out there in the world who have used it to propel themselves to global business scale. The idea you have, whether original or something you have read about or seen in another country, is not actually the entrepreneurship. This only begins when you take concrete steps to make it happen. Where are you on the journey today (part 5 of this series)? Have you been listening and learning? Ae your entrepreneurial eyes open to solving problems around you?

To be continued. . .

It was mostly a 2018 to remember for Ugandan rugby, and much more if you are a Black Pirates fan, writes William Kasoba.

U

ganda might have joined the ranks of rugby playing nations as far back as 1958, when it played its first official rugby game, but in a sport with a well-demarcated and hardly changing boundary between heavyweights and lesser lights, there was never a debate that the Rugby Cranes found their home in the latter category. Well, that changed for at least a week when Uganda made it to its first Rugby Sevens World Cup, confirming a growing status the game as one of the country’s favourite and fastest progressing sports disciplines. Yet, everything must start with the game being in the right kind of health domestically. And there was no better embodiment of that wonderful health than Black Pirates. Black Pirates become ‘boss’ on the local scene

The 2017/18 campaign will always be one to remember in the history of the Black Pirates and Ugandan rugby overall. The Pirates enjoyed their most successful season, winning a first Rugby Premiership title and the National Sevens title to boot. The Pirates then came close to claiming a treble, only to lose the Uganda Cup final to Betway Kobs. Rugby Sevens play at maiden Rugby World Cup Sevens After years of registering near misses, Uganda Rugby Sevens in 2017 finally qualified for the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens after defeating Zimbabwe 10-7 in a hard fought final played at Legends. That ensured that they retained the 2017 Africa Cup Sevens and in addition to their 2018 World Cup qualification, coach Tolbert Onyango’s boys also made it to the 2018 Commonwealth

Strike over allowances disrupts Gold Cup campaign Not all was rosy, however. Following a good showing in the 2017 Gold Cup campaign, the Rugby Cranes were tipped to do better this time round. The campaign did not go to plan, with the team settling for third place once again. The real disaster of the campaign came to the public eye in the last game, as the boys threatened not to feature in a game Zimbabwe unless their allowances were paid. The resulting disruption was enough to lead to a 38-18 loss at home.

Vipers, KCCA’s

big test on the continent Friday, December 14 Caf Champions League First Round CS Constantine Vs Vipers SC Saturday, December 15 Caf Confederation Cup First Round KCCA FC Vs Mtibwa Sugar, Startimes Stadium

BY WILLIAM KASOBA

U

ganda’s representatives on the continent have an opportunity to stake their claims for group stage action as they engage in double first round encounters against Algeria’s CS Constantine and Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar. After eliminating Sudanese side El Merriekh, champions Vipers Sports Club has to jump yet another hurdle against Arab opponents as they attempt to emulate KCCA FC by becoming only

the second Ugandan side to feature in the Caf Champions League group stage. Vipers play their first leg game away in Algeria this Friday well aware that North Africa has been a hostile hunting ground for Ugandan clubs, but the Venoms will be inspired by KCCA’s recent forays in the Maghreb region, where they have given a good account of themselves. The Venoms sit second in the Uganda Premier League while their opponents Constantine are placed eighth in the Algerian Ligue 1. Table-topping KCCA on the other hand can feel more confident as they return to the continent by way of the Confederation Cup, and having been exempted from the preliminary round, host Mtibwa Sugar in a first round first leg encounter at Lugogo where they will be clear favourites. The Tanzanians will be no pushovers though, having comfortably overcome with Djibouti’s Northern Dynamo 5-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round.

H

eading into matchday five, the 2018-19 Rugby Premiership is taking shape as the top five teams sprint away while for the remaining bunch it already appears like focusing on survival is the smart strategy. Only five points separate the top cluster, with DusuPay Warriors leading the table standings for the first in their history. Hima Cement Heathens which overturned a 12-0 deficit at half time in a giants’ clash against Betway Kobs is placed second with 18 points same as the Warriors but only separated by a minor goal difference. Defending champions Black Pirates, Kobs and Toyota Buffaloes are not far out as they have 16, 13 and 13 points respectively. This weekend’s action sees Heathens hosting Shell Rimula Rhinos, Kobs, Pirates and Warriors playing away at Plascon Mongers, Jinja Hippos and Rams respectively. Buffaloes host Walukuba Barbarians.
