NEWS DIGEST Police issues new security guidelines for schools
Betty Aol Ochan asks Janet Museveni to resign over fires
Following the Monday fire that killed 11 and injured 40 students of St Bernard Secondary School Manya in Rakai District, police has directed school administrators to stop installing burglar-proofing on windows of dormitories and classrooms. “When you put a burglar proof, you prevent a burglar from entering but we forget the problem that could come from inside. Schools should focus on having a robust security system,” said the Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima. Kayima also called upon schools to implement security guidelines that were issued in 2008 at the height of rampant fire outbreaks in schools.

Miria Obote was hospitalised on Saturday after what was called a chest infection. “The medical team is now assessing the possibility of her suffering viral pneumonia. She was moved to the High Dependency Unit for closer monitoring. The medical team is working competently towards restoring her good health,” her son Jimmy Akena said.

Opposition MPs want First Lady Janet Museveni to resign Opposition MPs led by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Ms Betty Aol Ochan, have asked the First Lady Janet Museveni, to resign as Education minister over the ministry’s failure to enforce its directives and guidelines in schools. During the Tuesday Parliamentary seating, Aol
said that there has never been any police report into such fires that has been made public. The reaction follows the recent fire outbreak that gutted St Bernard’s Secondary School, Mannya in Rakai District, killing 11 students and leaving 40 hospitalised with injuries.
Rashid Km Maidness Marylyn Alaso This is ridiculous. It is not the job of the MOE to police every school. That is why DEOs and Inspectors of Schools exist. If anyone should resign, it is the HM of the school. He’s the one who failed in his mandate to protect the kids.
Chinese doing business in Uganda have threatened to leave the country and invest elsewhere in Africa unless the government provides security to stop criminal attacks on their companies and killing of members of their families or workers. President Museveni, he has vowed to deal with the gangs trying to frustrate the investors. Several attacks have been reported but the most recent happened late last month, criminals raided CCLE Rubber Company in Mbalala Village in Mukono District and injured five people. Three of the victims were Chinese and two local workers of the same company.

One-On-One I Dolibondo
Interview
New comedians have failed to breakthrough because all they do is copy – Dolibondo Dolibondo has been described by colleagues as a comedy genius. His multi-lingual delivery has given him a place among the comedy greats in Uganda. On December 1, he is hosting the third Camp Comedy experience in Jinja. Moses Abeka caught up with him to talk comedy, the camp and the future.
raise a certain talent that people might not know of. You know comedy is very wide than most people think. There is sketch comedy, standup comedy, clowning comedy…several genres. There are those comedians that are very funny one on one, there those that are funny on stage, those good at both. Those are very funny one on one will be around the camp fires. So the acts we have are really talented. They did not start yesterday. What would say about the current state of comedy industry? The comedy industry is fine but it’s at a point where it has failed to bring in new talent. I don’t know if have exhausted the industry to the maximum or people are still afraid…or the audience does not believe in new talent. It has failed to bring in new talent. Where is the problem? One thing they have to know is that they have to be themselves. When I started out, we were at Effendiez, and among all others, I was the only one doing comedy in both English and Luganda and that made the people to embrace me. These young people have a problem, they want to come perform like Mariachi, dance like him, others will copy Napoleone Ehmah, and others Aleku… stick to your style. People will like or hate you. If you copy, they will just hate you. Stop dilly dallying on other people’s styles.
W
hat is Camp Comedy all about? Camp Comedy is just like any other comedy show only that it’s not in the usual setting like bars, theaters, and halls. We decided to get comedy out of the usual setting and also involve in other things like fun games, camping... Basically, it’s a comedy show that involves natural setting. For how long has it been running? Camp Comedy has been in existence since 2015. In 2015, we had one edition and 2016 there were two editions, we skipped last year and now we are back. So basically this is an idea that works! Yes, it’s an idea that works. That’s why companies like Club, Capital FM, Kiss

you the support. What does one need to have to attend? You need Shs30K entrance. There will be early bird tents going for Shs20, 000. For tickets you buy three, you get one free. If you have a tent, there is space. If you don’t have a tent, there will be tents for hire. You come to Forever Resort just after the New Nile Bridge. Is it a full day and night event? The gates open at 5pm till and we shall be at the venue till December 2. There will be a full night experience. What’s your take on the comedians that will perform that day? One of the cores of Camp Comedy was to
As one of the big names who have been in the industry for quite a while now, what are some of the misconceptions you have face as a comedian? Sometimes people in the audience or our fans think they know more than we do. For instance you find someone saying Ugandan comedians don’t do enough research. Yes, you say we don’t do research but how much knowledge do you have about the joke? You see with cracking a joke, me and you have to be on the same wavelength. I have to be talking about things you already know. Ugandans are not much informed. When you look at comedy across the globe, you realize people blame us without knowledge. You look at Chris Tucker, Kevin Hart doing racial jokes about whites and blacks just as we are doing about Baganda or Bakiga!

Concerts I Business
Why corporate companies shunned Bobi Wine’s Kyarenga concert BY ALEX TAREMWA
W
ith an attendance of over 45,000 according to Fire Base Management sources, the Kyarenga Album Launch went down as one of the most successful concerts of the year 2018. The success notwithstanding, Kyarenga brought to light two new dimensions that had yet to be seen on the Ugandan entertainment scene. The first is the glaring snub of the concert sponsorship by corporate companies and the role of social media influencers to effectively market an
event. Given the political clout that surrounded it, Kyarenga was bound to be controversial bait that most corporate companies could not risk to bite. Only those that did not have much to lose took the political risk. Not only did the concert have clear no venue at the beginning, there was also no clearly set date when it would happen. The initial date was October 20, 2018 but due glitches between the Uganda Police, Emma Promotionz – the initial promoters of the concert and the management of the Mandela National Stadium, it was moved to November 10. When FUFA lodged a complaint against the use of the stadium, it was seemingly the last nail in Kyarenga’s coffin. Even Bobi Wine at one point admitted that “I am not sure this concert will happen,” in one of his social media posts. The uncertainty according communications Herbert Mucunguzi, Kwese TV’s Country Manager could explain why there was little corporate sponsorship for the event that eventually happen at Bobi Wine’s One Love Beach in Busabala. “Bobi Wine is a fighter. He was determined to have his event this year by hook or crook. He wanted to sail against the tide and had chosen the right venue. Companies care about brand placement and obviously Namboole is more appealing than Busabala,” Mucunguzi added.
concert is the musician’s current political structure that has, according to analysts shadowed his music career. Bobi Wine, who doubles as the Kyadondo East MP has since assuming Parliament taken his fight against what he calls bad leadership to the doorstep of President Museveni. With his People Power

want to play safe because there is the reputation of their brands is at stake. Some people might like it and others might choose to boycott it like the Nike Scandal in the US after the Kaepernick advert,” Mucunguzi added. And as rightly observed, Busabala had politics written all over it from the colours that people donned to the guests that were invited. Red – a colour that became popular after the Age Limit debate was predominant. Most people have concluded that the gathering was not a concert but a political rally. Poor management When Matooke Republic reached out to the corporate companies that would have otherwise not turned their back on Kyarenga concert organizers, they all said they were not contacted by neither Bobi Wine nor his event promoter. Joel Kigozi, Next Media’s Chief Strategist who recently gave Jose Chameleone shs500m for his December 7 concert at Cricket Oval said that if the organizers had reached out to them, NBS Television would have sponsored. “All we have ever wanted is to promote our very own talent. That is why we created NXT Radio but we never got any proposals from the Bobi Wine team to sponsor,” Kigozi said. MTN Uganda shared similar sentiments. Val Oketcho, the telecom’s Corporate Communications Manager said that the legislator did not request for the company’s participation or sponsorship. This could either be a question of poor organisation on Bobi Wine’s part or self assurance that he could pull it off without corporate support. But for the companies that dared to participate, the results were obvious. BBS Terefayina, the television that aired the concert live was picked over 8 million new viewers during the concert hours alone both on and offline. The vendors of foods, assorted products and red apparel such as People Power T-shirts, berets and bandanas left Busabala while counting their blessings. The government has since classified the manufacture and sell of People Power apparel as criminal and vowed to confiscate the clothing from anyone found wearing them, anywhere. Although the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) failed to disclose how much was declared as ticket sales from the highly attended concert, it is estimated that Bobi Wine and team collected money in the excesses of Shs300m.

When Rema’s fans heard the song, they supported their musician for writing a nice dedication to her husband. Pounds came up with song titled ‘Delicious’ and the song’s lyrics will make Rema doubt Kenzo’s overnight “lessons” to the diva. When many people look at me, they think I am an easy target. They try to find out what the spice is with Diana. Well, I respect my body and I do not go easy.” When Daddy Andre was asked the same question, he simply laughed it off. This comes at a time when Rabadaba was recently asked on a television show who he thought the simplest girl to get in the game was and he mentioned Spice Diana.

n Nigeria, “Motigbana” is currently a smash hit and it has fast become 2018’s naija anthem. The King of the East felt like he had to do the instrumental his own fair share of justice. The question is did he or did he not? Well, unlike the usual Afro pop, Pallaso steps out of his comfort zone and raps hardcore on this one. It is what gives this song its Midas touch. On this track, Pallaso narrates the chapters of his life, the victories, the pain and the struggles. On the very first verse, influences from his earlier stay in the states reek
through his lyrics when he talks about putting a gun in someone’s mouth. The scars from his past are laid bare when he remembers the death of his brother, AK 47. He asks him to look down upon him and see the mud the haters are slinging towards him. On the chorus, Pallaso simply tells people to let loose. He tells people to lay their worries and enjoy life because it is only one life. YOLO. With his hard hitting punch lines and bars, Pallaso yet again proves his versatility and reasons why he could be one of the most underrated acts of this generation.

One in seven people not with the ‘love of their life’
LADIES, ASK FOR
FAVOURS WITH NO FEAR
Marrieds look away! Research has revealed one in seven people in steady relationships might have just ‘settled’... And… For 60 per cent of those questioned it took just 10 weeks to know that someone is Mr or Mrs Right. The full story
One in seven adults is in a long term relationship with someone they do not class as ‘the love of their life’, a study has revealed. And for 60 per cent of those questioned it took just 10 weeks to know that someone is Mr or Mrs Right The research found of those, 73 per cent have ‘made do’ with their partner because their ‘true love’ slipped through their fingers. And a quarter of all adults have been in love with two people at the same time. But the detailed study revealed 17 per cent of the 2,000 adults polled said they have met the love of their life since they got together with their long-term partner. And some 46 per cent said they would be prepared to leave their spouse or partner to be with their true love. Men (surprisingly) are more loyal to their partners than women with 37 per cent saying they would stay in the relationship for their partner’s sake. The poll by Siemens Festival Nights found the average person has fallen head over heels in love just twice in their life and has been left heartbroken once. But an unfortunate one in 20 adults has been heartbroken more than five times in their life. For 60 per cent of those questioned it took just 10 weeks to know that someone is Mr or Mrs Right, the poll found. Claire Jarvis, Director of Communications for Siemens said: “The results showed it can be hard to find ‘the one’ and although the general perception is that women tend to fall in love more often than men, it was intriguing to see that in reality both men and women fall in love on average two times in their life. “What is alarming is that so many people claim to be in long term relationships or even married to someone who isn’t the true love of their life. “And if there are people out there who are genuinely in love with two people at the same time, they must face a huge dilemma. Interestingly, more than half of those polled thought they have been in love on occasions but looking back don’t believe it was the ‘real thing’.” The survey also found that the typical adult fell in love for the first time at the tender age of 19 and dated four to five people before they met ‘the one’. The study also showed that for nearly 75 per cent of the adults polled the definition of love changes as they got older. Claire Jarvis added: “Although many of the adults polled said they weren’t with their true love, the majority claimed to be head over heels with their current partner which is really encouraging.”

hat do people mean when they say a woman who doesn’t ask for anything deserves everything? This right here is the kind of claptrap that has turned fine women into bitter witches. You sit in a relationship asking for nothing except love. Meanwhile the side dish is busy demanding to her heart’s content. At the end of the day, you have squat and a black hole in your heart. HEALTH 4 surprising health benefits of kissing BY PAUL ISABIRYE
W
hen starting a relationship, kissing is one of the best ways to test if there is or there might be anything in it. Once you are past that stage, kissing becomes an extremely useful tool for showing your affection, not to mention, upping the temperature during romantic engagements. Yet, few people might know it, but kissing could provide health benefits too, and here are some:
Kissing is good for your teeth
Dentists acknowledge that kissing leads to increased saliva production, and this helps to clear our teeth of potentially harmful bacteria, which in turn makes them healthier. So as long as the two of you boast good oral hygiene, treat kissing the same way you would treat exercise--something that is going to improve your health.
Kissing boosts your immunity
Swapping saliva can be a good thing for your immune system, apparently. It is said more than 700 types of bacteria are resident in the human
mouth, yet you will never find two people who have the exact same makeup of oral germs. That means exchanging saliva with someone can introduce new bacteria into your body, some of which might be helpful in suppressing the old bacteria that already existed.
A treadmill for your face?
It is documented that a simple kiss burns only a calorie or two, but science has already established that tongue kissing uses all the muscles in your face and can burn up to 26 calories per minute. Kissing, you could say, is some form of exercise as it increases the blood supply to the parts of your facial muscles are being worked, allowing them to be get renewed and become healthier in the process.
Kissing can lower anxiety
Research has also shown that kissing reduces the chemical cortisol, which is associated with stress. Yet what kissing does is that it prompts the release of a hormone known as oxytocin (also called the ‘love hormone), which hormone has been found to induce a sense of calm, relaxation and bonding in humans.
this sort of madness. “Ask and you shall be given” it says. When they say, don’t ask for anything, all they are telling you is be cheap. Be submissive. Take the pile of nonsense they give you and be content with it. Like the good ol’ girl that you are. Sure, we have been brought up to believe that a woman’s private parts are priceless. Allow me to burst the bubble. There is a price tag on every one’s *****! Invisible or otherwise. If the man who eats that jelly doesn’t pay the price, you might as well hang
it in the Louvre museum for everyone to watch, enjoy the view, and walk away. But we all know you won’t do that. Instead, you will display yours to the next cheap loser who revels in your unconditional love. Your priceless most loving body part? No way! By the time he is done with it, you will have no place, no face and no dice to roll. Yes. As sure as night and day, there is always going to be a price to it. The only thing within your control is which side of the balance sheet your ***** will be.

ou have probably seen this accessory on your favourite celebrity but weren’t quite sure if it was something the ordinary folks like ourselves could indulge in. well, the answer is yes! Chest rigs are the chest version of the belt bags and make quite the statement when styled well. Given the nature of this bag, it is going to be making all the fashion statements with your look. So it would be advisable that you go minimal on all the other pieces in your look. For instance, you could opt for your tee, and jeans and a great pair of sneakers. Finish this off with a chest rig, possibly in a calm shade like black or olive green. For the ladies, you can replace the t-shirt with a body suit, a pair of skinny jeans or Bermuda shorts and add your chest rig for the perfect look. If you can look for where you can buy these, many of the upscale fashion stores around town should have apiece or two of these.
ow would you describe your style? I love maintaining a sense of confidence by being casual and elegant without being overdressed or under-dressed. What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? A Crossbody bag. These are a style saviour. What is your worst buy ever? I don’t remember What styling trick works for you all the time? lessed with a patch of arable land, residents in many of Uganda’s urban centres are adopting an alternative form of farming; backyard or sack farming. This type of farming involves growing crops, especially vegetables, in sacks, pots or plastic cups.
Farmers, especially those who are tight on space, have adopted this concept of growing crops, and Vincent Kyagaba from Namugongo is one of them. Vincent who also grows mushrooms said he picked interest in this particular type of gardening from a friend he had gone to visit in Gayaza who used the same method at his home.
“After realising I had about 10m by 20m of free space where I stay, I figured I could do the same thing. I began by collecting sacks and plastic buckets littered all over the pits in my suburb. The next move was to collect manure. “Good enough a friend has a poultry farm nearby in Kito, from which I got about three full sacks of chicken droppings,” Vincent told Matooke Republic. According to him, a small portion of loamy soils are put first in the container or sack, and to that manure is added, then the top is covered with yet another layer of soil. “For some vegetables, it is important to first grow them in a nursery bed before transplanting them to the sacks, however for others you can plant them directly. In one of the sacks. I grow Sukuma Wiki, dodo, cabbages, climbing tomatoes, onions, carrots, egg plants and many others,” he added. In order to reap from his vegetables, Vincent began by creating a vegetables stall for his wife which sells a variety of vegetables, some of which come from his own garden. For his troubles, Vincent told us he usually makes at least Shs55,000 per week from the venture. “The phrase ‘no money’ has become a song to most people in town, so they end up adjusting their consumption towards foods with low nutritional value, however backyard gardening has the capacity to overcome this as it provides a wide and secure range of nutritional foods,” said Vincent. Despite the fact that most plants cannot grow well from seeds in sacks because of poor aeration (unless a nursery bed is first created), Vincent said this mode of farming works well since it does not require one to wait for the rains. The 35-year-old backyard farmer added that since 2016, his venture has been of a huge help in that he no longer has to buy foodstuff from the market because after every harvest, there is always enough left for home consumption. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Reflection: Buckle up, slow down and don’t text or drink when driving... #EverySecondMatters!
A
ccording to the World Health Organization, road accidents are the leading cause of death of young people ages 15-29. Although our countries in general have many fewer cars, 40 of the 50 nations in the world with the highest road accident death rates are in Africa. These are grim statistics that we can change if we slow down and... let’s talk. What measures can we take to help improve the safety of our vehicles, roads, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists? Later this week is the UN World Day for Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims. Please do your part by sharing this information, especially with young people. Most of you can probably #Imagine the top reasons for road accidents:
n Speeding. n Distracted driving (for example, talking on a mobile phone, texting, eating or drinking...) n Driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, even some prescription ones. nReckless and impatient driving. n Animals and people crossing the road or walking alongside it. n Ignoring road signs. n Rain and fog. n Running red lights and stop signs. nDriving at night without due care. n Changing lanes and turning unsafely, without indicating. nTailgating. n Road rage. nPotholes and other road infrastructure problems. n Driver fatigue. n Tire blow outs.
n Unsafe vehicles. n Deadly curves. n Street racing. nCar design defects. (Rare problem, but it does happen). An estimated 80% of car crashes are caused by distracted drivers, with the risk of an accident increasing: nwhen you are reading email or browsing the web while driving. nwhen texting behind the wheel. n when reaching for anything other than a phone while driving. n when making a call behind the wheel. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for at least 4.6 seconds. At 88 KPH, that’s like driving the length of a football field, blindfolded! Now there are a few simple things you (and your loved ones) all must do: Wear your seat belts and make sure your children get
into this habit, too. If you ride a bike of any kind, wear a helmet. If road accidents do occur, these can literally make the difference between life and death. To all of you innovators and inventors out there, what else can we do to keep our people safe on the roads? In taxis? On buses? What can we do to make things safer? By now you all should know this but let’s help educate others: Do NOT drink and drive, or text and drive! Every 90 seconds a person is injured in a drunk driving crash...
Just don’t do it.
Instead, use a ride hailing company such as Vaya or any other such company, or ask a friend to give you a lift. #YourLifeTurnsOnThis! Life is full of very tough choices, but this is not one of them. God bless all of you. Stay safe on and near the roads.

Female footballers make the best girlfriends, says Crested Cranes’ Ruth Aturo William Kasoba talks football, school and boyfriends with
talented Uganda national women’s football team goalkeeper Ruth Ataro.
N
ineteen-year-old Ruth Aturo is the fast rising goalkeeping star who plays for Crested Cranes and UCU Cardinals. She is a student at Uganda Christian University pursuing a degree in Business Administration. Only this year, the teenager was named best goalkeeper at the CECAFA Female Challenge, Rwanda and COSAFA Women Championship in South Africa. And just last week, Aturo scooped another nomination in the Airtel Fufa Awards 2018. She will be facing off with Crested Cranes teammates, midfielder Tracy Jones Okiror and defender Shadia Nankya for the Female Player of the Year gong. Matooke Republic sat her down for an interview. What do you think about the fact that many girls start playing football with males, before moving to the women teams? Is it true that it can give you something more? I personally played a lot with boys and it’s something very special. It gives confidence and speed compared to when you’re playing with fellow girls. By the time I started playing with girls I could just grab all their shorts. What memories do you have about playing football with boys? Hahaaa……. they always treated me good only after fouling and projecting heavy shots at me. Women who play football face a lot of criticism especially at the early stages of their career. What is your experience? I have personally experienced a lot and have emerged to overcome them. At school boys used to joke calling me their brother but self-control was key to get me through. How does your daily training program look like and how do you juggle football and studies? For sure my studies always collide with trainings but I try balancing them. However, during weekends since I have no lectures, I give my all. Many people have a saying, that ‘I can’t date an athlete’. What is your advice to them? Firstly, those saying that have a huge problem and they are missing out a lot though I can understand their choice. As human beings we are very different. My advice to those to such
Lady Cardinals goalkeeper Aturo goes for the ball as a Kampala Queens FC player watches on. (Photo by Edward Kalema) people who decline dating female athletes, just try dating one because I am sure we are the best.
Although I feel happy for being nominated, I am not surprised at all. Trust me I have had the best performance this year.
Are you seeing someone? Of course I have and he is the only one. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose him.
Are you confident that you will walk away with it? Hahaaa.. I will walk away with it trust me.
Speaking about your recent Airtel Fufa Awards nomination, how did that make you feel?
Who is your favourite goalkeeper? Denis Onyango has always been my best.
What impact has he had on you? On the few occasions we have met, he has encouraged me to always do my best for myself and the team. Where do you see yourself in the future? For sure which local player doesn’t want to play in Europe? That is my dream and with God and hard work it will come to happen.

Afcon 2019: Uganda Cranes is coming
Top 4 seek to carry on Day 1 form in rugby
A
fter a sparkling start to the season for all the title contenders, the action returns this weekend as the country’s rugby giants seek to carry on with their winning starts. Black Pirates who on Tuesday scooped a sponsorship deal with Stanbic play Shell Rimula Rhinos, the only team that defeated them last season. The Pirates’ who ran riot as they posted a 50-9 welcome against newcomers Walukuba Barbarians last weekend might have issued a bold indicator already that Rhinos will have to wait a bit longer to register their first season win. Rhinos lost to DusuPay Warriors 23-7 last weekend. Betway Kobs who thumped Jinja Hippos 32-0 in Jinja will now host another Jinja-based club Walukuba while Hima Cement Heathens who managed to jump over the Toyota Buffaloes hurdle play host to Jinja Hippos. In other games Plascon Mongers play Warriors in the most balanced game of the weekend while Toyota Buffaloes do battle against Rams.
Group L Qualifier Saturday, November 17 Uganda Cranes vs Cape Verde, Namboole (4pm)
BY WILLIAM KASOBA
T
he clock is ticking down to the day that might turn historic if Uganda Cranes pick a point in the crucial Afcon qualifier against Cape Verde on Saturday, November 17 at Namboole Stadium. Since the start of residential training on
Monday this week, the Cranes have been undergoing intensive preparations and according to head coach Sebastien Desabre, the team is ready to complete the task and accomplish the first back-to-back Afcon qualification since the 1970s. “The players are in good shape and we hope for a good display against Cape Verde which also needs the game. I am hopeful the boys will fight hard and we [will] go back to Afcon,” said Desabre. Uganda won the first leg (1-0) away in Praia thanks to Geoffrey Serunkuma’s goal. However, both sides had previously met on
two occasions in the 2006 Fifa World Cup qualifiers where each side won 1-0 on their home turf. As it stands in Group L, Uganda Cranes leads with 10 points and will only need a point to qualify for the 2019 Afcon finals to be hosted by Cameroon. Second-placed Tanzania have five points and play away to Lesotho on Sunday, where they could secure qualification with a win in Maseru should the Cranes beat Cape Verde at Namboole. Cape Verde are third in Group L with four points while Lesotho are bottom of the log with only two points.
She Cranes prep for maiden international series On Tuesday this week, the Uganda She Cranes started preparations ahead of their maiden participation in the Vitality Netball International Series against England Roses slated for November 27. With the team captain Peace Proscovia set to join the team in England, her assistant Lillian Ajio leads 15 other players in training. The series that are aimed at preparing both sides for next year’s World Cup will see the She Cranes have the first feel of the Echo Arena in Liverpool a venue which will host the 2019 Netball World Cup.
