Government has announced that all government officials intending to make travels abroad will have to use the national airline, Uganda Airlines, once it becomes operational. The ministry will direct on what is supposed to be done about this issue, but LC chairpersons should desist from it immediately,” Ms Namuyangu said.

Court I Age Limit

Why the Age Limit ruling is a nightmare for ‘Yes’ MPs

another term in office. “Our Parliament has a history of incumbency turnover for MPs. About two thirds of the parliamentarians don’t come back for another term. So if you don’t see me here, don’t ask,” he said. Kazo County MP, Gordon Bafaki, said the court ruling had come at a bad time when there seems to be a witch-hunt against the MPs who voted for the constructional amendment. “The outcomes will make life even harder for some of us. Yes, I know I did the right thing but how do I explain that when I am not feeling safe to walk without attracting a stone or worse, bullet to the head,” he added. The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza said she hopes for justice for the Opposition MPs who were beaten, humiliated and injured during the Age Limit debate military invasion of the chambers of Parliament. “Our colleagues were arrested; others like Hon Betty Nambooze are still in hospital so Court must deliver justice for these people and restore the honour of Parliament. This is not a political club,” she said.

BY ALEX TAREMWA

T

he Constitutional Court convenes at Mbale High Court todayto deliver the ruling in the petition filed against the amendment that removed the age limit cap from 75 years and extended the length of Members of Parliament terms from five to seven years. If there is a group of the people that are worried of the outcomes of Justice Owiny Dollo’s court ruling, it is the 317 MPs who voted in favour of the said amendments – several con-

trary to the voices of their constituents. A survey conducted by Afrobarometer soon after Parliament passed the amendments indicated that 85% of Ugandans were opposed to the amendment and told their MPs during consultations not to “touch the Constitution.” Nonetheless, the 317 MPs on December 20, 2017 lifted the age limit, with a paltry 97 voting otherwise. Two MPs

abstained from the voting. For their voting, the MPS have been paid in kind with discrimination, humiliation at public functions, or voters shunning their events (no confirmed link to Abiriga assassination???). The joint petition filed by Kampala’s Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, lawyers Male Mabirizi Kiwanuka, Karuhanga Kafureka, the Uganda Law Society, Prosper Busingye, and Jonathan Abaime aims to reinstate the former constitutional order by reinstating the age limit cap in Article 102(b) and blocking the MPs from usurping the citizen’s mandate by giving themselves two more years in power without asking them first. Mbarara Municipality MP, Michael Tusiime told Matooke Republic that given the high level of turnover in Parliament, he is worried that he might not return for

“Our colleagues were arrested; others like Hon Betty Nambooze are still in hospital so Court must deliver justices for these people and restore the honour of Parliament. This is not a political club.” Erias Lukwago, one of the petitioners told Matooke Republic that he expects the ruling open to the public so the jury can see the jubilation or disappointment they will bestow on the people of Uganda. “We were sent guidelines for the ruling yesterday. I want the judges to see what this petition means for the country and our democracy,” he said.

Investigation I News

Is Development Channel U

gandans have suffered at the hands of pyramid schemes that have sucked their hard-earned moneys with the promise of better returns and later disappeared like a fart in the wind. Gift Circles, Telex Free, D9, ripped off thousands of Ugandans and fled. With a cloud of doubt hanging over the legitimacy of Development Channel, Matooke Republic’s Investigative Reporter went undercover to unearth the machinations of the company and the motivations of the founder. The beginning On February 27, 2018, the New Vision ran an advert of Development Channel giving free tablet computers to single mothers who had participated in the company’s ‘outreach program.’ This advert was followed another in which Development Channel sought to recruit over 2,500 sales and marketing executives who “did not need to have any education background.” All one needed to do was to go to the company’s office at Itiri House along Port Bell Road in Kintintale, present his Curriculum Vitae (CV) and get interviewed instantly. Disguised as a job seeker, our investigative journalist set out to Development Channel to ‘get a job.’ Taxi marketing agents Upon boarding a taxi to Luzira from Nakawa Park, a young lady who only identified herself as Jackie randomly asked if the passengers had heard of Development Channel. The passengers jeered in disinterest – pointing to the fact that they had already heard enough. But being on a mission, the journalist asked out of curiosity what the company was about. “It is an amazing company that has these amazing tablets. When you buy one, you automatically get a share in the company which guarantees you $100 for a lifetime,” she said. Intrigued, the journalist asked to see the tablet only to be handed a “Shareholders Certificate” – a document the company gives you after you pay up the Shs860, 000 for the No dropout Tablet. With Development Channel, you don’t get the tablet instantly. You pay (read order) and wait for when the shipment arrives. Probed further about the specifications of the tablet, the marketer admitted that it is not about the tablet but the shares and benefits that accrue after one acquired it. At the Development Channel office The offices are easy to notice from a distance as the house is decorated with all the flags of the 54 African countries and a big picture of President Yoweri Museveni covering the glass windows. At the gate, you surrender any form of identification and the security furnishes you a visitor’s tag that you wear around your neck at all times. Development Channel covers all the two floors of Itiri House. Set up in an open office plan, the first

place is where the money is made. Every staff is swamped by about four clients at the time demanding for the tablets they bought. At the reception, some of the No Dropout tabs are on display with beautiful women manning the counters. As a potential employee, the journalist is ushered into a corner where about 45 other

graduates are waiting for the interview. The wall adjacent to them bears all the logos of the 25 other UK-based companies in which you get a share once you buy the tablet with a tagline 11.11.11 – suggesting that they came into existence on November 11, 2011 – but not according to Company’s House – the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. According to the UK registry, all the 25 companies registered under Charles Nwabuikwu Lambert, the Director of Development Channel Ltd have been compulsorily dissolved. Lambert, the smart man that he is, found a way of re-registering some by tweaking the initials in their names. No Dropout Limited for example was initially incorporated on July 16, 2016 only to be dissolved on January 2, 2018 only to re-registered as

DC No Dropout Limited 22 days later. Job interview that never was After minutes of cross examination, the interviewees were taken to the second floor where the Director or Chairman - as they call him - and top staff sits. Here, we were ordered to remove our shoes and switch off the phones and were then led to Charles Lambert’s office. Meanwhile, Lambert is sipping on white wine as a skimpily dressed assistant keeps him company. On top of the fridge behind him is a bottle of Robertson Wine and Almeca Tequila. We took our seats in the neatly set staircase in front of him as if about to stage a performance for him as Lambert scans our face one-by-one. “You have all been given jobs,” he said. “Come back Monday and start work. ”Confused, our journalist raises his hand and asks the Chairman what exactly they are expected to do when they report for duty. The answer was an outburst. “Don’t assume that you know what we are doing here, because you don’t. We are fighting an economic war and we will crush anyone who gets in our way. I will burn your house and f**k everyone you know if you get in my way. Here if you get ahead of me, you are fired. “I am from the United Kingdom. Do you think if I was looking for money I would come to Uganda? Are you crazy?” he asked. Lambert continued to explain how his is a poverty alleviation company that is empowering Africans with a lifetime payment. He scoffed at aid companies that gave Africa with one hand and take with another. “That is the economic war I am talking about. We are at war with governments that keep their people in poverty. At war with corporations that cheat Africans and multinationals that threaten our social order and we will fight to the end.”

Row with Capital Markets Authority Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the Ugandan regulator of Equity and Securities – buying and selling of shares got interested in the business model Development Channel was using to sell shares to Ugandans yet the company was registered as a poverty alleviation program. Following

“If you buy the tablet and you lose money, you can perhaps take pride in the fact that you still have a tablet to hold unto but you don’t have much recourse on the company .” answered letters to the company, CMA’s team met stiff resistance from Development Channel staff who physically dragged the officials out of the Luzira-based premises. Development Channel Ltd was incorporated on July 11, 2016 but has since applied for filed accounts as a dormant company and hence is not paying any taxes in the United Kingdom. According to the UK Company House registry, Development Channel’s business address changes on March 8, 2018 from 3 Arthur Street Grays Essex RM17 6EH to Kemp House 152 - 160 City Road London EC1V 2NX – a location business consultant Mustapha Mugisha reveals

another scam? is a virtual office belonging to a company called Capital Office. “Any fraudster anywhere in the world can open a virtual office and get an office address. This means it is not easy to confirm the exact faces of people operating the office. It is unlikely that a serious global company with headquarters in London could have a virtual office for her operations,” he said. Matooke Republic contacted Capital Office and they were more than willing to offer us a London address at only £45 (about Shs220,000) for a year. However, we were told that we were not expected at the premises or to direct people there under any circumstances. The address was only for document purposes. We don’t sell shares Charles Lambert, the 44-year-old Briton of Nigerian origin is the only director of Development Channel and the 25 other companies – all of which are either insolvent or dormant – meaning they don’t make any money. This means that anyone who buys a tablet with the hope of monthly $100 (Shs385, 000) has to pray that the companies on the certificate become profitable lest, no profits to share. Although Lambert refused to give this newspaper a formal interview, he released a public notice responding to CMA’s red flag against Development Channel explaining that his company does not sell shares but a rather a certificate of profit sharing that “is not securities and cannot be traded.” “We do not in any way disrespect the authority of CMA neither do we consider ourselves beyond their oversight but are only requesting that the body see that innovation is a key pillar of the private sector and create room for a middle ground,” the public notice read in part. This begs the question, if the company does not sell shares, why do they tell their customers that they do? And if one earns profits from the tablet he/she buys, why does he/she have to recruit other people to the chain? No free money Computer and phone dealer Jerome Bananuka told Matooke Republic that with its specifications, the Development Channel No Dropout tablet is worth not more than Shs400,000 in China. “Those specifications for tablets cost between Shs200,000 and Shs400,000, depending on the number you order for,” he said. Bananuka added that there are many better-quality com-

puter tablets for the price Development Channel is selling their No Dropout tablet on the Ugandan market but since Ugandans want free money, they are falling for the Development Channel tablet that he says is a grand scam. Renowned businessman Dr. Patrick Bitature cautioned his followers on social media not put their money in get rich quick schemes such as Development Channel. “Investors beware. If it sounds too good to, it is certainly a hoax,” he wrote. As lawyer Nicholas Opolot notes, “If it walks like a hoax, quacks like a hoax, then

News

it is definitely a hoax.” Opolot warned Ugandans that the Development Channel terms and conditions do not give them leverage to sue as the terms and conditions do not talk about anything about refunds and the company can only be sued in United Kingdom and Wales. “If you buy the tablet and you lose money, you can perhaps take pride in the fact that you still have a tablet to hold unto but you don’t have much recourse on the company and this is where the government needs to come in and protect people from such corporate theft,” he added.

Music I Going Out

Five years ago, performing to a small group at a local bar in Mukono, Madrat and Chiko started their comedy journey. The duo rose to stardom earning their first gig at Waikiki Bar in 2015. Ahead of their Tusker Malt-sponsored Nseko Buseko show, the duo sat down with Matooke Republic’s Ivan Juuko to talk about the comedy industry, their private lives and the journey so far.

W

ho are Madrat and Chiko? Madrat: My real name is Dickson Lubega. I was born 31 years ago to the late Moses Ssebyala and Irene Ssebyala in Masaka but raised in Makindye. I attended St. Kizito Junior School in Mukono and then joined Africana Whiteland College in Mukono now called Seroma Christian School. I did not continue after S4. Chiko: My name is Frank Mubiru, 29 years old. I was also born in Masaka to Badru Mubiru and Sarah Nakyegye. I went to New African Child in Makindye, Nabuti Primary

School in Mukono for Primary 6 and 7 then joined Fairland High School in Mukono for O-Level and Progressive High School in Mukono for A’Level. I did not attend university. When did the two of you meet? Madrat: We are longtime friends. We met at Zero-one Bar in Zzana where we both happened to perform. We have been friends since although we only get closer during the performances. When did you start doing comedy? Chiko: I did not know I was a comedian when I started because I did not see it in me. I was a drama actor in some group in Mukono for close to four years before a radio job came calling in 2009. I then joined Dunamis FM in Mukono and it was while on radio that I was told people laughed a lot when I was on air. I also worked at Top Radio for a few years before I decided to try out comedy. Madrat: After S4, I joined Epic mobile sounds as their official DJ and it was where

I learnt how to be an events MC. I partnered with a friend called Baby X with whom we hosted events and with time we were joined by another friend to form the group Malibu Comedians. The name was inspired by Amarula family. We used to do our comedy at Satellite Beach in (Mukono), Total Pub (Seeta), Pride Pub Bweyogerere, Zero-one bar in Zzana, among other places. How was the beginning as a duo? Madrat: The beginning was tricky because we were tired of only being based in Mukono. One day we decided to take a taxi to Kampala and our motive was to perform at Theatre Labonita. We used to watch a show on TV called ‘Haha’ and we wanted to be part of it. We approached Emmanuel Ssebakigye, but unfortunately he turned us down, saying we could not perform at Labonita since we were local and only performed in Luganda. He said he did not want to work with Luganda comedians because they were obscene. He took us to Waikiki Bar and it was there that he said our performance would determine if we were

Music I Going Out eligible to perform at Labonita. Chiko: Our performance at Waikiki was impressive and the crowd requested the organisers to bring us more often. We won our first gig at Theatre Labonita. It was unfortunate that we got misunderstandings with the organisers and left for Laftaz where we signed a one-year contract to perform at the weekly Jazz Comedy Night. When was your major breakthrough? When our footage with Comedy Files first aired on national TV and people started coming for our shows to see how Madrat and Chiko looked like in person. Where do you get your jokes from? We get our jokes from everyday situations. We can get a joke from this interview with you and you will see people laughing. We get jokes while driving around town and many other everyday situations. We just make sure we keep that third eye to see what everybody else is not seeing. Your critics say that you recycle your jokes. What is your take on that? People don’t know that it is hard to come up with jokes. We sit and draft jokes to be used for a week in case we have many events. The people who complain about recycled jokes as far as Madrat and Chiko are concerned are our staunch fans who follow us everywhere. We don’t repeat jokes at the same place, but we will do the same joke at a different place and if they happen to follow us there, they will find the same joke. You are known as Luganda comedians, have you performed at any corporate events? Our first corporate event was in 2015 in Mbale. It was a Pepsi event and it opened doors for us. We have since worked with NTV, UAP Insurance and Huawei Technologies, among other corporate companies. You rarely perform in English. How do you handle corporate events? There is a saying that, “desperate situations call for desperate measures.” We didn’t complete school and truth be told, our English is not the best but we will speak it when we have to. At most of the events, we are pushed to the wall but at the end of the day we come out of it and smile all the way to the bank. You performed at last year’s Africa Laughs. Weren’t you scared being among high-calibre comedians? Like a soldier who works under orders, you never refuse a mission. When you are told to go to war, you have no choice. When we were put on the list for Africa Laughs, it was a trial and error thing but we decided to give it a try, although we didn’t expect great results. What has kept you together as a

duo? Respect for each other has been key for us. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We get differences but solve them as grown-ups. Our differences are always the same, usually when one of us arrives late for an event. Which comedian inspires you most in Uganda? Amooti Omubalanguzi (Amarula Family) has and will always be our biggest inspiration. He is the godfather of Ugandan comedy. He is a legend in the Ugandan comedy industry. We owe much respect to him. Do you hope to compete on the international market soon? Absolutely yes. We normally see Nigerian comedians do their thing on the international market and we also hope to do the same. We are soon joining the likes of Trevor Noah and Basketmouth on the international market because we got what it takes. Do you see yourselves as Uganda’s biggest comedians soon? Of course, so far we can rate ourselves at 70%. We will absolutely be Uganda’s biggest comedians after our ‘Nsekobuseko’ show tomorrow. What have you two achieved so far from comedy? What we can say for now is that we have gotten friends and fame. We cannot disclose the assets we have gotten from this because our fans may think we are bragging or may overrate us and even fail to come for our show but just know we have gotten enough. Talking about the show, tell us about Nseko Buseko. It is going to be the biggest comedy show of the year. However, unlike last year, we feel we have come of age and need a bigger and classier venue and we settled for Imperial Royale Hotel. We will treat our fans to a twohour long rib-cracking performance. We will hold subsequent shows in Mukono at Satellite Beach on Saturday and Tavern Woods in Kabuusu on Sunday. The show will be hosted by Alex Muhangi and will feature performances from Janzi Band as well as other leading comedians. We kindly request all our fans to come and support us. Why the name Nseko Buseko? Making people laugh is our job and that is why we chose that slogan Nseko Buseko. If we were pastors we would probably dub our show Holy Holy but unfortunately we are not pastors. We are simply comedians who make people laugh.

Showbiz

What is unique about this year’s Nseko Buseko show? This year’s show is a VIP show. Like we already said, Imperial Royale Hotel is a bigger and classier venue. Are you married? To each other? No. We are both married but we won’t mention the names of our wives or children. What do you do apart from comedy? Madrat: I own a boutique on the building with Satelite Beach in Mukono. Chiko: I own one of the biggest movie libraries in Mukono.

COLOUR BLOCKING H

ow would you describe your style? My style is simple and very effortless.

M

y favourite styling trick is back! And I think for any one that is looking for a look that will win you both compliments and head turns should try this out as well. Colour blocking is the easiest way to wear more than two separate hues without looking like you are a fashion misfit.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? Is a perfume a fashion item? If yes, then perfume. If not, it’s sunglasses. What is your worst buy ever? Grey sweat pants. I don’t know what I was thinking.

You can try out this styling option with both your casual and formal attires. For instance, you could wear your hot pink matching suit with a deep blue body suit and complete this with nude accessories. Or, you can add a yellow off the shoulder top to your green culottes. Add a stylish mule to this look for the perfect finish. The trick is to wear two colour popping shades all in the same look. If you want to go a little extra with this, keep it to only three colours, maximum.

What styling trick works for you all the time? Tucking in. It works for me everyday, on any day, everywhere, even on shorts and t-shirts. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Trousers.

he FDC Chapter Makerere University on Wednesday held a joint press conference with other party leaders from different Universities of Kampala University, Kampala International University and Kyambogo University to address various issues like the recently introduced Mobile Money and social media tax, the 15% Makerere tuition increment among other issues. The team headed by the Chapter President, Edmand Kahiigi, advised Parliament to suspend and investigate the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe whom they think is “mentally unstable” following various policies that he has been implementing at the Wandegeya based campus. “We are requesting the general public and the Speaker of Parliament that let Professor [Nawangwe] be suspended

and be investigated on the way he conducts duties in his office since he became the Vice Chancellor. Meals are to be scrapped off from halls of residence, the halls of residence are going to be privatized, at the same time he is increasing the tuition. It is raising suspicion, he might be a mad mad, so we may seek for medical help from Butabika hospital to confirm that the professor is indeed in a good health state,” Kahiigi told journalists.

Kahiigi also sent a message to the first lady who also doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports that they (students) will fight to see that this tuition policy does not pass. Kahiigi added that for them to accept this policy, Makerere Council should provide accountability for the previously paid tuition because he sees no improvement ever since he joined Makerere in 2015. “There is nothing that shows that anything has been improved. The services that I found here are the ones that are still there. So if the University Council wants to convince us to accept the 15% tuition increment, let it first come out and give accountability for the money that they have been receiving for all these years.” said Kahiigi. Kahiigi also threatened to impeach the seven-member committee that passed the new tuition policy beginning with the Guild President, Were Salim, who he thinks connived with the administration to betray the entire student fraternity. Four bad habits that give you belly fat

HOW REJECTION BECOMES PART OF YOU

H

abit: It is that thing that we do when we are not paying attention to what we are doing. But what if you could change your habits so that you could start losing fat automatically — without ever having to think about it? New research says that you can — and it’s easier than you think. We develop habits because they save us time and energy (you don’t have to think about whether to make coffee in the morning, you just do it), and because they give us a sense of comfort and reward. But which habits are costing you the most? These four contribute a lot to you gaining belly fat.

You eat mostly with big groups

When we eat with other people, we consume, on average, 44 percent more food than we do when dining alone. Research published in the journal Nutrition found that a meal eaten with one other person was 33 percent larger than a meal savoured alone. It gets scarier from there. Third-wheeling with two friends? You’re looking at a 47 percent bigger meal. Dining with four, six, or eight plus friends was associated with meal increases of 69, 70 and 96 percent, respectively.

You order last

If you want to eat healthy when dining out with a group of friends, keep healthy company … or order first! Research found that groups of people tend to order similarly, especially when forced to give their order out loud. The researchers attribute the results to the fact that people are happier making similar choices as their peers.

You forget you are full

Stopping at a red light is more challenging when you’re flying at 100 miles per hour than when cruising at a slower speed. Knowing when to put down your fork is similar. Experts say gauging your body’s subtle “I’m full” cues is easier when you take smaller bites at a slower pace. In fact, one study found that people who focused on taking “small bites” of food consumed about 30 percent less soup for their meal than those who didn’t make the conscious decision.

Eat healthy when dining out with a group of friends...

You sit too much

Ideally we sleep about eight hours for every 24. Most people spend an extra seven to 10 hours sitting at their desk. That means most of us spend the overwhelming majority of our time sedentary. Our bodies weren’t designed for this level of inactivity. One way to burn more calories daily is to stand more and sit less; you could burn 50 more calories an hour standing than sitting.

BY IRENE M. NAMARAH

T

he other day, I was chatting with Maria (my groundnuts lady) and our conversation quickly turned to men. Something we seldom discussed. She was shocked to find that I was indeed single. Unlike others who discover the same about me, she didn’t laugh to my face out of disbelief. She asked me why I was single. After I went through all the trouble to give her about 10 good reasons, she only paused one single question that has kept me awake for almost two weeks. “Irene, these men who don’t understand you. The ones you say only want to use you,” her question was coming, “Do you tell them before hand exactly what you want from them?” There! I fumbled with several answers until she finally saw me through my dishonest teeth and said, “Well, I get what you are trying to say but I think that it’s you who

allows these men to walk all over you.” “How dare she say something as cold as that?” I writhed in my bed later that night. Haven’t I done all there is to do to please a man? Haven’t I showed every guy what a terrific catch I can be only for them to throw it back in my face? Haven’t I taken breaks from dating only to jump back into the pool to discover that guys are even deader inside than I originally thought? Surely any guy would mark it as his birthday the day I as much as sent him a tiny sign that I wanted him to stick around for the long haul. So what was the old g.nuts lady trying to mean I let them walk all over me? It took me some time but I finally figured out Maria’s words. All I do is send signals. For a wordy girl like me, all I do is send signals. I thought about all the rejections I have endured. Starting from my relatives, lovers, friends, workmates, neighbours and even Facebook friends. After several hours of soul searching, I discovered that being rejected, is the sole cause for further rejection. Rejection can strike a

bond, you know. It is like an alcoholic who knows that they are alcoholic. You want to quit but sobriety makes you feel dysfunctional to the bone. Everyone thinks of you as a drunk so you might as well take your booze. It is the only way you know how to live. Rejection is that way too. While you are still recovering from one, another sets in. Eventually your whole life becomes one huge piece of rejection. You become so used to it that you build your entire life around it. You find safety and comfort in your pain. What rejection is capable of doing to you is to, subconsciously, make you seek out only the people most likely to reject you. As Maria, had pointed out, “You allow those unworthy men to walk all over you.” You don’t know any better. Even when someone wants to genuinely love you, you spoil it all because you don’t know how to feel loved, and you are scared because it is a very unfamiliar place for you, so you rather stick with the people who walk all over you because well, you are used to that. You are even comfortable with it.

SCI-FACT

Eating fish may improve your libido, study says A bit fishy?? Looking for a spark in the

bedroom? Try eating more fish, research says.

Fancy sushi? A great reason to go for sushi this weekend.

Long story…

If you are in a relationship and looking for that spark, besides spicing things up in the bedroom, you might want to change what’s for dinner. A new study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that people who eat more fish tend to have more sex.

Here’s what the researchers found, via Men’s Health: “For the study, 501 couples who were trying to conceive logged their daily seafood intake—including fish and shellfish—in a journal for four years. They also tracked how often they had sex. The researchers followed the pairs for a year or until they became pregnant. “They found that 92 percent of the couples who enjoyed fish and shellfish more than twice a week were pregnant by the end of one year. Men and women with the highest seafood intake—more than eight servings per month—had a 22 percent higher rate

of getting it on, too. One theory as to why people who ate fish got pregnant more often is that they took more time to have dinner together. Another is that the zinc content in shellfish and oysters can increase your libido, but the researchers were not 100% sure. Still, the numbers are pretty noteworthy as they are. Besides fish, other foods that you should be eating if you want to increase your libido include celery, garlic and dark chocolate.

Wondering… Is certain fish better than

others?

T

he Uganda government on July 18 entered an agreement with Canadian plane manufacturer Bombardier to get four CRJ900 aircrafts in a deal worth $190m (Shs711bn). The deal is part of efforts by the government to revive the national airline which suffered several technical and management challenges before it collapsed in 2001. According to the government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, the airline will commence in-bound flights around the East African region by March 2019 and expand to world routes in October 2020 when the two Airbus A330-800neo aircrafts are delivered. In order to become profitable, the Works Minister, Monica Ntege Azubah said revealed that government officials flying out of the country will – as a rule have to fly Uganda Airlines. Although the national carrier is yet to receive approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), factors point to the fact that the Ugandan flag will fly overseas once again. But with the Ugandan routes already being plied by bigger and certainly better airliners, does the Uganda Airlines stand a chance of survival? Jim Mugunga, the Finance ministry spokesperson told Matooke Republic that he is unconvinced that the sharks that swallowed the precursor national airline will spare the new airline. “The reality is that airline management has to be professional, experienced and competent. The Government appointments and interference, failed ideology, and corruption have no place here,” he said. Mugunga also cautioned the

government on the profitability of the national carrier especially in the face of competition from international giants such as Emirates. Giant, multinational and private airline companies, he said, have squeezed the traditional, “national airlines” out of business.

Bad business?

In 2015, Kenya Airways (KQ) reported a net loss of $258m (approximately Shs870bn), the country’s worst ever corporate loss. South African Airways (SAA) declared that it was technically insolvent. To date, it survives on state-guaranteed loans and remains incapable of producing financial statements. Ethiopian Airlines is the most successful national airlines in Africa and this week, it purchased its 100th aircraft. Even Tanzania and Rwanda dwarf Uganda six-strong fleet – that is everything goes as planned. Is Uganda Airlines a classic case of a poor man playing in a rich man’s league? British Airlines and Etihad Airways all cancelled flights to Uganda in 2015

and 2017 respectively despite both airlines being dominant players. What will Uganda Airlines do differently? While the proponents of the airline argue that we need a national airline to create jobs, transport people, fly unpopular routes, develop tourism and trade and carry the national flag, veteran business journalist, Paul Busharizi thinks that Uganda has better ways to employ her people and make more money than an airline. “Starting up Uganda Airlines at any cost; in the old form and business model, in order to fly the national flag, or for pride and sovereignty is simply bizarre. KQ and SAA serve as a lesson to Uganda that no airline, national or otherwise, established under old-school sentimental “national” carrier policies, can survive in today’s hugely competitive environment,” he said. Busharizi argues that with the country still suffering with gross poverty, hunger, and economic hardships, investing in reviving an airline in a case of misallocation funds since almost 75% of population cannot afford

Strive Masiyiwa

a plane ticket.

Building capacity

In terms of capacity, Dr Samson Rwabwire, a PhD holder in Materials Engineering at Makerere University and a Masters in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering told Matooke Republic that Uganda still lacks the technical capacity to manage an airline. Rwabwire noted that a national airline needs a self reinforcing skill base – something that the country’s aviation school is not producing. “As a person who has worked as an aircraft maintenance engineer, Uganda has maybe not more than five qualified and experienced aircraft engineers with the capacity to support maintenance of Boeing and Airbus fleet. “Even the fleet used by defunct Air Uganda used to be maintained by expatriates from France and Italy. This is where the oil dollars can go to revamp the East African School of Aviation and probably turn it into an aviation institute offering aviation/ aeronautical degrees in the region,” he added.

#SolutionMindset: Don’t complain and cry... Instead, imagine!

A

young American was visiting Zimbabwe as a backpacker and discovered it was easy to get around because people would give him a “lift” and charge for the ride. He noticed that most people travelled to work using “paid-for lifts.” To an American who spent countless wasted hours stuck in traffic jams, this was revolutionary! He went home and with a colleague decided to launch a “ride sharing” business called Zimride (which was soon acquired by a big car rental company). Thereafter, six years ago he and his partner launched another “shared economy” business called “Lyft” which is now worth an estimated $15bn+. It’s

the main competitor to Uber! Another young man wanted to go into the hotel business but he did not have “enough money” to build hotels. Whilst some would have despaired, he and two friends came up with an ingenious entrepreneurial solution that has helped them build a business more valuable than the biggest hotel groups in the world! That business, of course, is called Airbnb, a concept used in African cities for decades, probably longer. We started talking about this last week. In my own country, people who do not own their own home often rent space in other people’s houses as “lodgers.” Millions of people in Africa find lodgings in this and similar ways. Like Uber, Airbnb (now considered worth some $37bn only 10 years since its founding) could also be an idea born

out of Africa! Suddenly I can hear a howl of indignant complaints from the “conspiracy theorists,” but this is not the entrepreneurial way to respond. All it means is that, thanks to technology and innovation, there are other similar new opportunities right on our doorstep here at home! The response is for our own young entrepreneurs to study these new pathways to developing businesses, and re-imagine them to digitize things like our “urban lodging system,” and many other similar situations. The person who digitizes urban accommodation in African cities, will be an African Airbnb... Could this be one of you? Look around! What do you “see”?! Come on guys, what do I have to do to wake you up?! Wipe those tears of bitterness off

your cheeks simply because you thought you don’t have access to opportunities or capital. The “shared economy” business model allows you to do smart things with very little capital. It allows you to leverage limited resources, skills and/or assets. I spoke last week about a guy who developed an App to help people find a free tractor in his agricultural community. Another business facilitates “sharing” of big equipment to construction sites, and yet another enables hospitals to “share” expensive hospital equipment. Cassava Fintech (one of our businesses) developed a business model to help rural people pool their savings using mobile money.

To be continued. . .

Hard work alone got me here From working as a dog trainer at the Police K9 unit, Micheal Woppo Sula is now the director at Keisha Dog Trainers. When did you join K9 and how much were you being paid?

What challenges have you encountered?

What helped you rise through the ranks at K9 unit?

What are your future plans?

I joined the Police K9 unit after I had finished my Senior Six in 2006 and during my probation I was getting a probation fee of only Shs160,000 a month. In 2009 I was promoted to the rank of corporal earning Shs260, 000. But by the time I left I was working as the Head Constable Major earning Shs400,000 salary per month. Much of the money I would get would be from the field, from those people who appreciated my services.

Hard work alone. Imagine I was appointed Head Constable Major while I was still at a rank of corporal. Head constable major is a task given to only an officer from the rank of a Sergeant and above. But in my case it was different.

As dog trainers we realised that dogs are like human beings. They have the ability to learn different skills when they are trained. However the rate at which every dog copes differs and the same thing applies with the skills they adopt. For example a pet dog cannot do the work of a guard or compound dog and the reverse is also true but most of our clients do not know this. Someone brings a pet but still they want us to equip them with skills of a guard dog which cannot be. Putting Keisha on another level. My dream is to organise dog shows from places such as Serena Hotel where various dog trainers from different continents shall gather up on the panel.

How exactly did you get this job?

The government placed advertisements, I applied, did my interviews and I went through (succeeded).

How did you start Keisha Dog Trainers?

I had saved some money while I was still working with the K9 unit and from my other investments Shs55m was enough for me to construct kennels and other materials. I remember starting with only three personal dogs but now the firm has more than 100 dogs with more 30 employees.

I remember starting with only three personal dogs but now the firm has more than 100 dogs with more 30 employees.

ON THE JOB Who do you look up to in the career world?

In my field of dog training, to be honest I look up to no one here in Uganda but considering successful persons from their careers out there I look up to Abryanz because he has invested large sums of money into building his brand name.

What books do you read?

I read so many dog life books and articles.

What is the one thing you would like to change about

your profession?

I always keep doing research here and there to ensure dog training modules at Keisha improve every day.

Tell us about yourself.

I am 33 years old and I am married with two daughters. My education background is not so big because I have only a UACE certificate from Nkoma SSS in Mbarara. I am the second born in our family of 14 but survived with one brother and five girls.

atif Muwonge is a 21-year-old Ugandan professional boxer born and raised in Zzana. He is the last born in a family of five. The younger brother of musician Yung Mulo, Latif has been part of Uganda’s boxing team ‘The Bombers’ since 2015, winning several accolades including; national cadet tournament boxing 2014, national intermediate championship 2014, national open boxing championship 2015, as well as the national team trials 2017. He also represented Uganda in the 2018 Bingwa Mabingwa East African Championship in Dar es Salaam. How was it like starting this boxing journey? I started boxing in 2013. During this time everything was hard from lack of training equipment, trainers among others. You being a young brother to singer Yung Mulo, it should have been easier to join the entertainment industry. Why then did you decide to join boxing? Hahaa…. Actually before he joined music, we both started as boxers but I think I was more passionate about the sport than he was. What was the feeling when you were left out the team that represented us in the Commonwealth

months back? How did you manage to get over it? For sure I wasn’t negative about my omission because just being on the national team is big for me. However, on the other hand it was a lesson for me to work harder. Reports indicate that some of you guys pay to be part of the contingent, what’s your comment? I never heard of that. I believe in hard work and determination. Any resolutions you have made not to miss out on such big platforms? Nowadays I train like a beast, so that I can be the best on planet. international engagement. What is you training schedule like? Do you have any official gym? I train from Zzana Boxing club everyday but before hitting the gym, I first do some road work early morning. While training, do you only go to lift weights or there are some other drills you go through? Hahaaa. True I do much of the weights but I also engage in football since it is the other sport I love. Do you have a personal coach? If so, who pays him? Yes I have and he is Coach Mujib Tebazalwa. On the issue of payment, Mujib has brought me far and with time we shall all gain from our hard work. Many boxers who seem to be failing in the sport here in Uganda usually turn into “Kifeesi” since they have the mass and physique, what is your advice to such colleagues? They must know that everything has its own time and through patience, focus and a positive mindset, the sky is the limit. I urge them to always make the best decisions during life setbacks.

Seeded 20th, the Rugby Cranes who are also double Africa champions, finished 19th out of 24 sides at sevens rugby’s biggest stage. Against Samoa they withered against a more complete side, losing 45-7. At least captain Michael Wokorach’s try gave every Guinness consumer who was following proceed-

Next in queue was Zimbabwe in the bowl quarter final, in a repeat of last year`s Africa Cup final which Uganda won 10-7. Chile, Cranes’ next opponents in the bowl semis got off to a flyer and held on for a 17-20 win to book a place in the final despite Uganda staging a late attempt at a comeback with two tries from Wokorach and Timothy Kisiga. All that was left to fight for was the 19/20 place against South Americans Uruguay. In this one Uganda broke loose and were 31-0 up at the break. Despite Diego Ardao being sent off for Uruguay, the latter posted 28 points in the second half for a respectable 38-28 score. The game also saw Kisiga score a hat trick, the first for Uganda at the World Cup, fortifying 19th place. James Odongo, Byron Otekayot, Phillip Wokorach, Aaron Ofoyrwoth and Timothy Kisiga were Uganda’s best players at the three day showpiece which was won by New Zealand. Over the course of the games, Rugby Cranes` popularity grew with time but on pitch there was evidence there is still plenty to fix, both in the technical and the tactical aspects of the game. The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) certainly has its work cut out.

KCCA eyeing scalp against African giants Esperance

Sixth round on as 7s series continue at Legends BY OUR REPORTER

A After surrendering an early 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 against Tunisian giants Esperance in the CAF Champions League, KCCA have their chance for revenge this weekend at Namboole,

CCA’s match against Esperance on Saturday is a revenge mission following the painful manner in which they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at the Stade Olympique De Radès in Tunis last Tuesday, but it is also a survival mission because the Kasasiro boys must win at home if they are to sustain their hopes of making it into the next round against all odds. Coach Mike Mutebi blamed the loss in Tunisia on the inexperience of his young team but he still picked out the high intensity performance as one of the few positives in Tunis. That per-

formance certainly had the Tunisians giants rocked as KCCA raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 22 minutes, only to be pegged back to 2-2 in the 12 minutes that followed. To win Saturday’s game therefore, the Kasasiro boys must show much better tactical awareness and determination to be able to press home their advantage and turn results in their favour. KCCA may be placed rock bottom on three points, with Esperance leading the table with seven points, Al Ahly trailing on four points and Township Rollers placed third with the same number of points as KCCA but boasting a superior head to head. Yet, for a team which has already claimed the scalp of Egypt’s and Africa’s biggest side, Al Ahly, another big win at Namboole is a genuine possibility. And KCCA know they need it.

s the winners of the Guinness National Rugby Series circuits become increasingly unpredictable, the action this Saturday continues at Legends for the sixth round. Last weekend the Toyota Buffaloes upset favourites and hosts Black Pirates and knocked them out at the semis. Buffaloes went ahead to win the final 19-5 against Betway Kobs to close the top three gap. Now ahead of the sixth circuit hosted by Rimula Rhinos, only 12 points separate the top contenders with Pirates leading on 95 points, Kobs on 90 points and Buffaloes close it up at 83 points. Neither of the top three can afford any more slips as we head nearer to the closing phases where one team could claim its maiden title. Rhinos who host this Saturday will, however, only be playing for pride as they are placed a distant ninth on the log with 44 points, although they have a revenge mission to accomplish having been humiliated by Pirates 21-0 at the quarter-final stage last weekend.

The games are slated for August 13 to 18 in Lusaka, Zambia. Africa has only four slots for the 2019 World Cup that will be hosted in Liverpool, England. South Africa and Malawi already qualified thanks to their superior ranking since they are ranked 5th and 6th respectively. Uganda is ranked 7th and will battle for the final two slots. Our opponents in the race include Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana and Namibia.
