Greed and corruption breaking up Uganda, says Kabaka Kabaka Ronald Mutebi II used the silver jubilee anniversary of his coronation to condemn the rampant greed and corruption especially in public service, which he said was breaking up Uganda. “Previously, parents taught children how to avoid greed and indeed children grew into good-mannered citizens. But during this era, there is a lot of greed among people and this is why we witness a lot of corruption,” the Kabaka said. He said if the current levels of corruption remain unchecked, Uganda will continue to sink.

Mobile Money Tax: Transactions decline by Shs672b

Museveni says judges not in charge of the country

Unused airtime scratch cards to be converted into mobile money

Mobile Money transactions declined by as much as Shs672 billion in the first two weeks after the 1% tax on mobile money was introduced, Bank of Uganda has said, while leading telecom MTN Uganda suffered a 30% drop in revenue, Parliament heard yesterday. Appearing before the parliamentary committee on finance, MTN’s CEO Wim Van Helleputte said since the introduction of the 1% tax in July, there has been a 30% loss from the Shs550 billion registered as of June 30, 2018. The tax rate has since been revised to 0.5% but the MTN boss called for it to be removed altogether.

Following last week’s court ruling against the extension of MPs’ five years in office to seven, President Museveni lashed out to the judges saying they are not in charge of the country. According to Museveni, five years are few for any development to take place. “Unfortunately, our judges in Uganda spend more time on form and not substance, with the 5 years, a lot of time is spent on electioneering and less time on development. The first two years; settling in, the 3rd year some work in the constituency and, then, by the 4th year, electioneering again,” he said

Tuesday this week marked the end of the use of airtime scratch cards and Frank Tumwebaze, the ICT minister, has announced all unused airtime scratch cards will be converted into mobile money. “Mobile operators have already put in place systems to facilitate conversion of any unutilised scratch cards into mobile money. Through this system, no customer will lose money,” said Tumwebaze.

Bugiri I Elections

Is Bobi Wine the solution to Uganda’s vote rigging? BY ALEX TAREMWA

R

obert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine is a baby to the political scene. His after shot at an elective office was a year ago when he beat seasoned politicians to become the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East. Kyagulanyi’s victory was hailed as a landmark as both Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his nemesis Dr Kiiza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change campaigned for their respective candidates, Sitenda Sebaru and Apollo Katinti respectively. The hack according to Bobi Wine was mobilizsation of voters to remain at the polling stations guarding their votes until they have been counted and tallied. “Elections are rigged at the polling stations because people were not vigilant.

After casting one’s ballot, the police and military intimidated them to go home and they would stuff the ballots and manipulate results,” Kyagulanyi said. After noticing the loophole, he mobilised the ghetto youth (fire base army) to keep a keen eye on the ballots casts to ensure that no tampering happened. Kyagulanyi repeated the same in the tightly contested Woman MP by-election in Rukungiri in which FDC’s Betty Muzanira emerged victor. Last week, Jeema’s Asuman Basalirwa backed by Kyagulanyi floored Kiiza Besigye and Yoweri Museveni once more in the Bugiri Municipality election. Kyagulanyi’s popularity is made him a national darling but a villain in the political circles but what is undoubted is the new dimension that he has brought to the political scene.

Speaking to Matooke Republic on the sidelines of the Africa Now high-level dialogue at the Sheraton Hotel, Democratic Party President, Norbert Mao said Bobi Wine has redefined Uganda’s politics diminishing the role of political parties. “Kyagulanyi reminds me of myself when I was his age. Young and energetic, not afraid to try out new ideas. He is more about individual appeal and less about political parties,” Mao said. Mao added that Kyagulanyi is himself a one-man party and has proved to be efficient in the space that does not limit him to collective responsibility that has come to characterize multi-party politics. Kyagulanyi delivered Jeema’s first candidate in Parliament and despite hanging around FDC circles, he has emphatically stated that he is not a member of the FDC.

News

Money doesn’t win elections While President Museveni’s opponents especially FDC have complained repetitively about the high monetisation of politics, Kyagulanyi has found ways of using the state’s own money against its advantage. In Kyadondo East, the NRM invested over Shs800m excluding the security apparatus but that notwithstanding, he won with over 70% of the vote. Prior to the election in Rukungiri, President Museveni has extended donations to area SACCOs and farmers to the tune of Shs5billion but when it came to the elections, the results were against him. Voter bribery, enticement with household items and grandeur campaign promises have increasingly become irrelevant factors in the electoral politics with the new force galvanising support both through big rallies and door-to-door campaigns. Even the heavy presence of the security apparatus during campaigns, polling day and the aftermaths, the intimidation and arrest of political figures has all played to the advantage of Kyagulanyi and team. In Kyadondo East, Kyagulanyi was arrested after he insisted in using a campaign rally venue that the Electoral Commission gave to President Museveni last minute. While his polling agents were beaten in the wee hours of the morning, the resolve of Kyagulanyi’s supporters only grew stronger and slowly, the military was overpowered and victory ensured. In Bugiri, the same happened when the hotel (Planet) Kyagulanyi was sleeping in was broken into by the Police and military arresting 16 of his team members. Candidate Basalirwa house was surrounded hours before he was set address his final rally but the result of the election reflected less of gun power and more of people power. Voter turnout According to Electoral Commission statistics in the 2016, about half of the registered voters did not turn out to vote. The trend is similar for the 2011 general election. Analysts believe that this caused the diminishing appeal of the monotonous politicians that have dominated the ballots for a long time. “When you see the same faces on the ballot in every election and the same results after, why would you go back to line up?” Agaba Ronald Bills wondered. “Bobi Wine has breathed new vibrancy in the election cycle of Uganda. He might as well bask in the sun for a moment.”

Age Limit I Interview

EXCLUSIVE: Age limit bill was lthough the Constitutional Court last week upheld the removal of the age limit from the constitution, the man behind the amendment, Igara East Member of Parliament, Raphael Magyezi has been having it rough since the bill was passed on December 22, 2017. In an exclusive interview with Matooke Republic, Magyezi revealed, that the motion to amend the constitution to remove article 102(b) that initially capped the years of president at 75 years for the upper age limit and 35 years for the lower was not his idea. The legislator revealed that the proposal arose from an individual at a constituency conference Magyezi had organized for his constituents on August 29, 2017. At the conference which was held in Butare in Igara, Bushenyi district, Magyezi said that his constituents entrusted him with the responsibility to move the motion in Parliament. “They said we have heard this thing about the age limit. We want to discuss it. They put it to a motion and actually voted on it. The video is there. After the vote, the said you’re our MP. Take this to Parliament and I came did some research, consulted and I came up with a proposal to move a motion to move a private members’ bill,” he said.

A

family has come under constant threat since tabling the motion. Often, the legislator receives death threats and insults right, left and centre to the extent that the President, Yoweri Museveni, took it upon himself to beef up the legislator’s security. But this did not deter some bold people from making their moves on the infamous legislator. One morning, as Magyezi was having his morning coffee at a hotel in Bugolobi, Kampala, a certain man walked to him and sent a blow to his face accusing him of selling the country. “This is the Magyezi everyone is talking about,” the man who later identified as a ‘highly read’ university professor said mockingly as he pocked Magyezi in the face. The legislator said that he had developed a thick skin and thus, abuses and insults hurled at him did not mean much as he firmly believes in what he did describing it as “my small contribution to having a better law than I found.” “Of course Museveni will benefit from the amendment but I did not do this for him. How long do you think he will be president? Utmost 10 years. And then what? People need to think about what is ahead than focus on the present,” he noted.

Age limit removal justified Magyezi argued that not only was it within his mandate as an MP to move a private members bill, the research he did prior to tabling the motion convinced him that the age limit was a “stupid law.” To begin with, Magyezi noted that in the Odoki Commission report that shaped the making of the 1995 Constitution, there was no age limit. According to Magyezi, it the Constituency Assembly (CA), the precursor of Parliament of Uganda that introduced the upper and lower age limits. “The framers of the constitution did not limit ages. It was the likes of Noble Mayombo who introduced it to stop Milton Obote from running for another term. From the beginning basically, the age limit was motivated by power,” he said. Magyezi further argued that much as the Constitution disallowed some of 75 years from running for the presidency, it allowed for someone who was 74 years and 10 months to get nominated for the office. This means that some of 74 years can rule till he is 80 years but someone of 75 years cannot. To him, this was stupid. Magyezi also explained that the lower age limit deprived the country of young, competent and capable leaders. “I was in Parliament with a girl of 19 years. Countries like Austria voted a president who is 31 years old. Imagine Bobi Wine – he is very popular now – was below 35. Our constitution would bar him from running for president. I found this wrong,” he said.

Meeting with Museveni Although the media was awash with news

I was assaulted by university professor over age limit Magyezi further revealed that his life and

that Magyezi’s age limit motion was President’s Museveni making, Matooke Republic has learnt that the two did not meet until the bill was ready for the first reading in Parliament. After making consultations with external lawyers and the Parliamentary Legal team, Magyezi convened a meeting of NRM MPs in the Parliamentary Conference Centre and told them about his bill. “The MPs welcomed it and asked me to move it in Parliament. The NRM Chief Whip took the proposal to Cabinet but the idea was welcomed with hostility. Ministers questioned why the idea was coming from me and what not so I sought the attention of the President,” Magyezi added. At around midnight, the President met with Magyezi and his team at State House

not my idea – Raphael Magyezi Entebbe and the president was visibly tired until the MP engaged him on the nature of the law and why the issue should be on the individual capability of an individual not their age. “I told him that there are people who are 30 years but cannot even fight someone of 70 years. And some people – like the president are almost 80 years but he is in better shape that most of us the MPs. Why should a man with that ability be limited by his age?” “He woke up and started to lecture us instead. At around 2am, we parted and the next time I heard from him was when Red Pepper ran a story saying that he (Museveni) had given me Shs600m and a house in Kololo,” Magyezi narrated. According to Magyezi, the president wanted to take Red Pepper to Court for the story but Magyezi declined but instead called a press conference at Parliament and cautioned Namanve-based media house to desist from the irresponsible stories lest he goes to Court. Although Magyezi denied receiving any money from the president, he admitted to having received more security personnel from the Commander –in-Chief. Since the bill was passed and accented to, Magyezi said that President had not thanked him since he was originally opposed to it. “There was no negotiation with Museveni. If he wishes to say thank you, he will do it but he knows I did not do it for him and from the results from the LC.1, Parish and Mayoral elections in my constituency, I have passed the litmus test,” he added. I am coming back in 2021 Despite being arguably the most hated man in Uganda, Magyezi is confident that he will come back to Parliament in 2021. “NRM won 22 of the 23 villages in the LC.1 elections in Igara East. We won 8 out 9 parishes and town council mayor ship. Why would I not come back to Parliament?” he

“Countries like Austria voted a president who is 31 years old. Imagine Bobi Wine – he is very popular now – was below 35. Our constitution would bar him from running for president. I found this wrong” wondered. Magyezi said that he is only hated in Kampala and social media where there elites are mostly concentrated but at the grassroots, he enjoys overwhelming support. 7 years was a mistake Although the constitutional amendment to increase the tenure of Parliament was introduced into at the second reading of his motion, Magyezi said it was moved by Mbarara Municipality MP, Michael Tusiime, in error. Magyezi said that it was an error to for Parliament to pass an amendment that was not consulted on, violated the social contract between the voters and the MPs and did not have an appropriate Certificate of Financial Implication. “It is like me giving you a job at my firm for two years and after your time is over, you continue working without telling me. Where do you derive that mandate to

work when me who gave you the job did not agree to it,” Magyezi said hailing the Constitutional Court for “reigning supreme” and “doing their homework.” Magyezi however said that he would not mind serving an extra two years in Parliament since most the MPs send less time on electioneering than legislating. “Five years is a very short time to do much. That is why you hear that some MPs have never said anything in Parliament. If we had put this amendment to a vote, I am sure

even those opposition MPs would have voted for it.” Legacy “I am not here to be loved. People will love you even when you’re not there. I am here to have faith in myself to do the right thing and I am convinced that what I did was right and justified. When I am no longer here and people have moved from abusing me to appreciating the logic behind my amendment, they will thank me,” he noted.

Ugandans not amused about Bobi Wine reading Nelson Mandela book at Jubireewo

D

onning dark shades and sleek Kanzu, Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the Musajja Wa Kabaka made entry to a warm reception at Jubireewo celebrations yesterday as Buganda celebrated Kabaka’s 25th coronation anniversary. As the new political kingmaker in town following Asuman Basalirwa’s win in Bugiri, Bobi Wine bound to attract political statements! He is now a legislator and a driving force in opposition politics after all. It is therefore not surprising that his photo reading Nelson Mandela’s famous liberation struggle story, ‘Long Walk To Freedom‘has attracted such a response. Captured by his photographer Tabz Ku Camera, Bobi Wine was seen reading at the function while donning shades. Press secretary to President Museveni, Don Wanyama claimed that legislator was looking for attention describing the photo as a PR fail. “This is to say what was happening at Jubireewo yesterday was not worth Bobi Wine’s attention… Forget the fact that he’s looking for attention anyway. PR gone bad”, he tweeted.

ell, if you are living in Kampala and you have not heard of Jubireewo, then I think it is high time you relocate. That is beside the point. From time immemorial, Paul Saka has been writing songs for His Majesty, the Kabaka of Buganda. This week, the Kabaka marked 25 years ever since his coronation and Paul Saka decided that it was just time he dropped the bomb! An all-star collaboration that we could liken to Swangz Avenue’s Mr. Deejay. Just that, instead of Rabadaba and Viboyo, we have a cocktail of secondary schools, both expected and unexpected. The latter being King’s College Buddo. The case of King’s College Buddo When Buddo S.S was initially enjoying all the “royal stones” of being the only ones that sing for His Majesty, their noisy neighbors were enviously watching. They were simply waiting

for their own time to steal Buddo S.S’s shine. Fast forward 2018, when opportunity presented itself, they paraded O levels in multi colored House T- shirts, clad in well pressed khaki shorts with a few female comrades in the struggle to avenge for all the days Buddo S.S has enjoyed the royal shine with them on the sidelines. They rub the fact that Kabaka Muteesa is their “old boy” in every one’s eyes and stop at nothing to bask in their new profound glory of their Jubireewo. Nevertheless, they do not come alone. Other shockers include Trinity College Nabbingo and Kibuli. Doesn’t the Kabaka ever get tired? From his coronation, it is students that have always sang these songs, with the same style, video production, lyrics and costumes. All could have been well if he had a choice to listen to these songs or not, but well, he does not. Every royal function, they are always there, singing the same thing. If you have watched any of those trademark Buddo S.S songs, then you have certainly watched all that is in Jubireewo, it is that simple.

So, the big question: Does this MIT research prove that online dating is changing society? Let’s log in, shall we?

How did your parents meet? Probably through a friend, right? Today, that’s still the most popular way to meet a partner, but the gap is closing. Online dating, it turns out, is spiking as a way to meet a soul mate. And we are not talking about hookups here (there are specific hookup sites for that). Researchers Josue Ortega at the University of Essex in the UK and Philipp Hergovich at the University of Vienna in Austria reported that “marriages created in a society with online dating tend to be stronger.” That’s right, couples that met through Tinder tended to be stronger than those meeting through friends. In their study, the researchers also observed another huge impact of expanding your options outside of your friend and friend-of-friend groups. They found that the rise in online dating and a rise in interracial couples is not a coincidence. “It is intriguing that shortly after the introduction of the first dating websites in 1995, like Match.com, the percentage of new marriages created by interracial couples increased,” the researchers report. It makes sense, right? When you are meeting people inside your friend group, chances are the people might be from a similar race or background. But online dating helps you meet people of a different race, culture or ethnicity.

All right then… If you have not tried online dating yet, what are you waiting for?

n that very cold morning, the only thing that would motivate you to jump out of your warm blanket is the possibility of getting a nice hot shower as opposed to the cold one, right? We all know there are few things as relaxing as a morning hot water shower. However, that morning hot water could be dangerous to your health, and here is why.

Lowers blood pressure

The body automatically lowers blood pressure due to increased temperatures caused by the hot water similar to changes that occur in hot weather, leading to low blood pressure. This drop in blood pressure may bring about dizziness and poor balance. This has an added danger in terms of causing a slip within the bathroom. Head injuries in these cases may be complicated by the already low blood pressure and can lead to serious complications.

Affects fertility

Since hot water baths are enjoyable, people tend to have them for a longer period. Research has it that hot water baths that go for

uys, we know when you get a fresh catch, a lot of questions stir up in your brain like, where can I take this attractive woman that would give me the best chance of getting to know her, connecting with her, knowing if she can like me, and potentially starting a relationship with her? This is when our so-called friends come in with all kinds of advice like, “Take her to the movies for your first date, it will be fun!”. No bro, disregard that advice immediately. The cinema is the last, I repeat, the last place to go for a good first date

and here is why. While seated in the comfortable seats of the cinema, you two literally have nothing to do but sit quietly and watch the movie. First, you are positioned away from her. Then, the stupid cup-holder barricade in between you two. You will desperately, but unsuccessfully spend the entire evening trying to compete with the sounds effects to come up with funny comments relating to the movie but all that could be in vain, because you won’t be heard. When the movie finally ends, and the lights are turned on, you will have spent two hours of your time filled with awkward moments with a relative stranger. If your choice of movie was not that

great, woe unto you, you might not even be granted the opportunity to redeem yourself because there might be no ‘after party’. Yes, that’s why movies suck. Knowing all that, here is what you should do. Take her to a place where you two can freely talk, get to know each other, have fun, and hopefully even get intimate. Take her to some fun-filled places like the beach where the two of you can interact more closely (body-to-body), a recreation park where you can find a dark corner and do as much as you two can agree on, take her to the club for dancing or even an event. Not watching a movie or watching each other watch other people, hehe. Thank me later.

Why a hot water bath is bad for you more than 30 minutes can affect one’s ability to reproduce since it weakens one’s reproductive fibre. Soaking, for example, in a tub of hot water is definitely not advisable especially for women.

breakage and excessive hair loss. Scientists revealed that most people who have regular hot water baths have higher chances of acquiring a bold patch with time.

Makes you lazy Causes dry skin

since a hot water bath removes moisture from your skin due to its high temperatures, it can cause dry skin and further peeling of the skin. If you have sensitive skin, it is better to keep away from bathing in hot water as it might also cause rashes and other skin allergies.

Faster wrinkling

Everyone wishes for fresher looking skin, but regular hot water baths can make your skin look wrinkled and haggard way too early because the regular hot water baths slowly weaken your skin making it easy to wrinkle out.

Causes hair falls

The direct hot water poured onto one’s head weakens the hair roots, which causes hair

A hot water bath makes you so relaxed that you will want to take a nap as soon as you come out of the bathroom, in stark contrast to a cold bath that sharpens the senses, a hot morning bath will do nothing other than dull your senses, and possibly contribute to making you lazier.

Government turns up ‘heat’ on multinationals over tax fraud

“There has been public outcry that some people are not paying their share of taxes. So everybody, including the multinational companies must pay their fair share of taxes. hirty three million products which were scheduled for importation into Uganda failed inspection tests, Dr. Ben Manyindo, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), said in a Financial Year 2017/18 brief to media on Tuesday. “As a result of UNBS intervention under the PVoC program, we were able to stop 33 million substandard products from being imported into the country,” said Dr. Manyindo. PVOC, or Pre-Export Verification of Conformity, is a program that requires that imports are inspected from their countries of export before entering Uganda. As part of the program, 8.6 billion products were inspected in total. Substandard products on the market Even with those efforts, substandard products remain prevalent on the market, according to the UNBS boss. Dr. Manyindo revealed that a study the body commissioned in 2017 to assess the prevalence of substandard products in the country showed that on average, 54% of the sampled products failed tests for compliance to standards, with a cross section of products on the Uganda market both imported and domestically manufactured failing the test. “UNBS is still grappling with is the high level of substandard goods on the market. While the proportion of substandard products on the [local] market is quite significant, it has reduced from 73% reported in a baseline study done in 2013,” he said. “Although the actual prevalence is at 54%, the perception level has remained high at 80%. This is an area that requires a concerted effort in being addressed,” Dr. Manyindo added. He blamed the lower prices charged for the substandard products as the main reason people knowingly buy such products considering that prices of genuine products are prohibitively high. He said UNBS was going to invest in mass sensitisation campaigns to empower consumers to identify substandard products and subsequently shun them.

According to the brief, the UNBS’ market surveillance team inspected 2,278 outlets, seizing 413 metric tonnes of goods worth Shs3.5 billion. The seized goods, according to the standards body, would have “otherwise been detrimental to the health and safety of consumers”. The goods seized included electronics, cosmetics, steel products, iron sheets, food stuffs, toilet paper, agro-inputs, cooking oil, second-hand tyres, beers, paints, and cereals, among others. The UNBS’ mandate includes developing, promoting and enforcing standards and quality of products and services to facilitate trade while promoting local industries and protecting consumers.

An amazing moment in African enterprise history - An urban legend!

A

few weeks ago I was in Abuja for two really important events that I wrote about recently. Whenever I go to Abuja, I always sense that something big is going to happen in Africa. The Nigerian capital is a place where legends are born. Maybe I feel this way because of something that happened there in 2001 that few people outside the telecoms industry know about. Let me tell you about it again, so that you can tell your children one day! When President Obasanjo, a passionate Pan-Africanist, came out of prison to lead Nigeria into democracy, he quickly realized that he needed to do something about

telecommunications in the country. Nitel, the state-owned telephone company, had only 400,000 telephone lines in a country with 150 million people. It was a scandal! President Obasanjo made it clear he preferred Nigerian companies in partnership with experienced African operators to bid for the three available licenses. At that time there were four African-led telecoms groups: Although there were no Nigerian players in the industry at the time, oil magnate Mike Adenuga put up his own company, Glo Mobile. Each bidder had to have Nigerian shareholders to qualify. The African telecoms sector was booming and although there were big international players like Vodafone and Orange, they did not join the process. It is the only time in African history that

such a bidding process was ever put in place! President Obasanjo invited us to Abuja to start bidding for three mobile licenses. This meant two of the bidders would have to drop out. The bidding process was to be managed by an international telecoms auction team from the UK, working for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). It was to take place at the Abuja Hilton. Every bidder had to lodge a deposit of $20m to participate! Bids would open at $100m! Any bidder who bid less than $100m would lose their deposit! President Obasanjo wanted the #Process to be competitive and transparent. The media were everywhere at the Nicon Hilton Abuja as we arrived for the “big fight”! Abuja’s largest hotel was filled with men

and women in dark suites. Mostly lawyers and bankers! Every single Nigerian bank was there working for one of the bidders, so were the lawyers! It was amazing! The day began with a briefing of the rules by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and its advisors: # Each team would be allocated a floor of the hotel. Each team had five players. No access to phones, and every team would be assigned monitors and auditors from the Federal government to ensure no collusions. I had already chosen my team which included a lawyer, an international banker, and two representatives from my Nigerian partners.

To be continued. . .

ohnnie Walker will give the Young Achievers Awards (YAA) Shs80 million after it announced an official partnership as title sponsor for the annual celebration this year. The premium whisky brand joins the awards as they gear for their seventh edition set to take place on August 18, 2018. Speaking at a press launch at the Serena Hotel, Roger Agamba, the International Premium Spirits Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, affirmed that the brand had

chosen to partner with the award organisers, Reach A Hand Uganda, in order to recognise the youth who excel at their craft and deserve to be celebrated. “It is only fitting that we motivate our young people who have achieved the extraordinary, and inspire them to become better entrepreneurs as they continue to bring to life more business initiatives which will in turn promote the country’s economic growth,” Mr. Agamba said. The YAA platform is designed to celebrate achievements of young people across Uganda, recognising

youth who have excelled in various realms such as the Arts, Entrepreneurship, Media and Journalism, Philanthropy, Innovation and Sports among others, as well as encourage those who choose the path of entrepreneurship and leadership. “The partnership with Johnnie Walker on the Young Achievers Awards is both timely and strategic. We both believe in creating platforms that not only appeal to young people, but have a lasting impact,” said Humphrey Nabimanya, the founder of Reach A Hand, Uganda, the event organisers.

Before Ssekajja found himself in his current venture, he had tried out different jobs and realised he was earning little while working long hours. “I started on my fishing dream with one pond measuring 50 by 50 metres in 2013 with just Shs1.5m on a family wetland,” Ssekajja revealed. In order to save money, Ssekajja manufactures his own feeds for his fish which he makes form locally available materials. “From the techniques I adopted from one training session in Matugga, a few months after I had started, I learnt to make fish feeds from cassava and potato peelings. Naguru Go Down; Where Uganda’s

Y

our average city dweller will be familiar with the upscale residential area situated on the upper reaches of Naguru hill, abounding with imposing mansions and all. Fewer though might know about the hill’s less glamourous yet important environs; the Naguru Go Down, or the fact it is the place to thank for some of the country’s most outstanding sportsmen. A dangerous slum by night and a picture of poverty by day, it is the location that has birthed national sports icons in boxing, football, tennis, cricket and athletics from John “The Beast” Mugabi to Phillip Omondi to Yayiro Kasasa. Many successful sportsmen in Uganda have that humble starting point and many vividly recall how their first step on the journeys to stardom began in the slum. Boxing star Mugabi, one of Uganda’s greatest footballers Omondi, rugby star Kasasa as well as long time national tennis champion John Oduke plus John Ssebowa (table tennis) are all part of a long list of stars produced from the area. Following in their footsteps in the present are ruggers who include Philip Wokorach, James ijongat, as well as cricketer Roger Mukasa. So, what is it about the Naguru area and its ability to turn everyday people into sports superstars? Proximity to Lugogo The existence of Uganda’s biggest sports

centre at Lugogo, a stretch which had over six football pitches, two hockey grounds, two rugby fields and the sport’s governing body, National Council of Sports complex in Naguru’s vicinity has a lot to do with ensuring the production line of sports icons from the area never runs dry. “My closeness to the Lugogo pitches most especially the rugby fields where I used to play and see senior sportsmen especially rugby players like (ex-rugby international) Allan Musoke playing boosted my love for sports especially rugby and I eventually took up sports till to date,” said James Ijongat, a professional rugby player with Kobs rugby team explained.

Phillip Omondi stadium in Kampala-Uganda Existence of Naguru Community Centre Complementing Lugogo were other facilities within Naguru estates including football pitches, volleyball and tennis courts and the famous Naguru Community Centre, best remembered for serving as a boxing gym. The facility’s gym aided the children from the many families within Naguru estates as a platform to turn them into formidable talent. No wonder, at one point almost the entire national boxing team was comprised of athletes from Naguru. Rugby legend Yayiro Kasasa, who started off as a boxer and later played handball to national team level told Matooke Republic, “There was always too much multiple talent bred that growing

stars at times failed to choose what sport to focus on. It is not surprising that Omondi also started off as a boxer.” No shortage of role models Meanwhile John Mugabi, who remains one of Uganda’s most successful professional boxers ever, in an interview revealed that besides the available facilities in Naguru, their rise to stardom was attached to the reputable idols who resided in the same area. “As children we followed our seniors training through the gym’s windows. Before long, we were going through the basics. No one grasps faster than a child,” said Mugabi, adding that today’s fighters don’t really have idols to emulate. Strategic location of Naguru One important factor that cannot be ignored is that clubs like KCC (boxing team) and Naguru Boys used Naguru as a tapping ground which was beneficial for talent growth. During school holidays, the children in the area would compete according to their areas of residence. The best talents would then compete in a Naguru versus Nakawa contest for selection to the giant clubs. Deceased former national boxer and coach Dick Katende, in reference to the stiff competition said, “It was easier to win a national title than making it to the KCC team or Naguru Boys.” However, today Naguru’s sports

fortunes have changed with the local leaders banning boxing from the Community Centre and government authorities leasing out pieces of land which formerly used to be the sports fields to huge malls. “It saddens me every time I come back to Naguru and see hopelessness everywhere. The playing fields are no more and many youth have resorted to alcoholism and drug abuse. “I created a foundation to raise awareness and inspire youngsters to be focused,” said Brian Umony one of the others Ugandan sportsmen footballer who once roamed the Naguru slums but who went as far as representing the national football team, the Cranes, and also enjoyed relative success as a professional.

T

he African Gold Cup Rugby season is back on with the Uganda Rugby Cranes taking on Tunisia. Following a losing start in the opening games 55-6 against Namibia and 38-22 against rivals Kenya, Uganda Rugby Cranes captain Asuman Mugerwa is hopeful that the campaign can be reignited starting with our first home fixture against Tunisia on Saturday, August 4 at the Kyadondo rugby grounds. “It has been long since our fans last saw Uganda winning. We are home. This is our chance to prove that we are going to do our best to make sure we put a smile on our fans’ faces,” said Mugerwa. Uganda sits rock bottom with no point on the table of the best in Africa excluding South Africa. Zambia leads the way on 15 points and Kenya follows with 12. Tunisia, our opponents at the weekend, take the third position on four points while Zimbabwe and Morocco are both tied on three points. After Saturday’s game, the boys will play two more fixtures at home, against Morocco and Zimbabwe on the weekends of August 11 and 18 respectively.
