Is government testing People Power? BY ALEX TAREMWA
O
n the day when the twelve candidates vying for the Arua Municipality seat held their last rallies, it was alleged that supporters of Independent Candidate Kassiano Wadri attacked and smashed the hind glass of one of President Yoweri Museveni’s lead cars. According to Museveni’s statement released yesterday morning, the rowdy supporters backed by Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) blocked Museveni’s convoy with a grader and continued to taunt supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) with stones prompting his security to intervene. One person, Yasin Kawuma (Bobi Wine’s driver) was shot dead at Pacific Hotel and several others arrested. The arrested included MPs Gerald Karuhanga of Ntungamo Municipality, Paul Mwiru of Jinja East, Francis Zaake of Mityana Municipality and Bobi Wine himself, and journalists. “One of the president’s cars was attacked and smashed by the hooligans that were donning colours of one of the contestants in the election, Kassiano Wadri,”Kayima told journalists on Tuesday. The police immediately mounted a manhunt where over 33 people were arrested and whisked to different places mostly Gulu Police. In Parliament, the debate got heated up when the new Leader of Opposition, Betty Ochan who is doubles as Gulu Municipality MP, tasked government to explain the whereabouts of the members who have been missing since the fateful Monday night. It is at this point that Gen Moses Ali, the second deputy prime minister revealed to the house that Bobi Wine was set to face the General Court Martial in Gulu today. This, he said, followed search of his hotel by the police found that allegedly found two SMG guns and a magazine of bullets in his room – the same that he was smoked out of before his arrest. Gen. Ali further revealed that musician cum politician has been charged with treason denying allegations that the arrested MPs had been tortured as alleged.
“
“There is no one of the arrested who was tortured. Be careful when doubting my statement because it is a minister’s statement,” “There is no one of the arrested who was tortured. Be careful when doubting my statement because it is a minister’s statement,” Ali told the house. Ali’s statement comes after pictures emerged on social media showing MP Francis Zaake in critical condition with reports emerging he was dumped at Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment before he was whisked away again. Gen. Ali also comfirmed reports that Bobi Wine was airlifted to Bombo Military Barracks for treatment before he was
flown back to Gulu Hospital where he is receiving treatment as he awaits to appear to Gen Andrew Guti’s Court. Parliament sends a six-man team The revealation sent Parliament into frenzy prompting the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to appoint a six-man team to represent the house in the military court. The team comprises of Hon. Jovah Kamateka, Hon. Baryayanga Aja, Hon. Amule Ruth, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana, and Hon. Medard Ssegona. Their task, is to return and furnish Parliament with a report from which the House will take an informed decision as to whether or not the house should be suspended until the missing members return. Bobi Wine is co-accused with the winner of the race, Kassiano Wadri who spent the polling day in detention waiting to be arraigned in court. According to the North- Western regional police spokesperson Josephine Angucia, Wadri was found with a pistol and twelve rounds of ammunition. “For that matter, all have been charged
with treason, unlawful possession of firearms,” Angucia said. Bobi Wine’s wife speaks out At a family gathering of Bobi Wine’s family, his wife Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi told the media that she feared that her husband was not in good health and that his life was detoriating. “We have not been allowed to see him or talk to him, she said.

Why smartphone boda-bodas are succeeding where KCCA failed
BY WILLIAM KASOBA
F
or years, government has made attempts of trying to streamline the boda boda industry and the last attempt happened early this year where Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) was seeking for Shs800 million to organise the industry in the city. The State Minister for Kampala Affairs, Benny Namugwanya disclosed that KCCA wants to streamline the boda boda industry so as to generate revenue but also ensure it’s clear of criminals. In this, the Authority needed money to recruit workers and buy equipment to facilitate the process as she said; “We shall need people to do the work. We shall need computers help in the process. We may need biometric machines and all these cost money. But we also need to come up with a clear plan for the boda-boda industry and the future.” However, as we speak the smartphone boda boda companies seem to be relieving KCCA from the burden of arranging the
a strict guideline that ensures that their riders don’t have more than one passenger, have two helmets with numbers, reflector jackets and stop at traffic lights. These are things the Uganda Police Force, KCCA had failed to achieve for over ten years. Not even the mandatory registration came close to solving the problem until recently when boda-apps came into the market. Just like the mandatory speed governors for public service vehicles, seatbelt use for all motorists, the helmet directive passed in 2013 has been tactfully dodged by the motorists. Despite the police threatening to arrest boda-boda cyclists and their passengers whenever they are more than one, some boda-bodas are sighted roaming in the city centre with three passengers. The Smartphone boda apps effortlessly resolved these challenges that have revolutionalised the industry. Ordinary boda-bodas crying foul But as we applaud the reached milestone,

My clients are used to the low prices of these app-bodas.” Muwonge said Christopher Byamukama ‘Kanyankore’ who we met in Kamwokya Acacia stage was no different from Muwonge’s lamentations as he also confirmed that app-boda has remained the only way to go despite the low charges. “Though I fear change but this time I am going to try and see. Am yet to decide which company to apply to but surely am going to apply because I need to get clients to transport and have heard that with these apps I get customers directly on my phone,” Byamukama said. However, some ordinary boda bodas riders remain optimistic that they will handle the Smartphone boda-boda competition. remember we also still have hundreds of riders who have remained in the ordinary manner of staging on streets or residential routes simply waiting for one to pass by. Matooke Republic reached out to some of them around town to give us their view on how they are copying-up with the competition from the app-bodas. We are all suffering the same way and remember for them they charge cheaply,” he added. When pressed further asking what if it’s made compulsory for every boda rider to be registered to any app-company, he quickly replied; “I will just quit the business and go back to digging.”

henever a discussion about radio personalities pops up, her name shall pop up. And Crystal Newman’s name only pops up when the discussion is about respect, love and happiness. Well, let’s accept, eighteen years later, Crystal moved on. Well, we can confirm that besides her several ambassadorial roles for different products and initiatives, Crystal already has something new going for her. Crystal recently started an online show dubbed Crystal’s Bites which has been running for the past few days on her youtube channel. The show is basically about a variety of Uganda delicacies served in different places. The show also involves Crystal hosting different celebrities to discuss the different delicacies they have enjoyed in different facilities in Uganda. And we can confirm, Crystal’s Bites started on a good note after clinching a partnership with the Tusker Lite sponsored Kampala Restaurant week who featured prominently on her first two episodes. Crystal has so far hosted Sheraton Kampala chef Denis as well as TV/ Radio personality Flavia Tumusiime. Crystal is one of the few women celebrities to start up her own online show; songbird Juliana Kanyomozi runs an online reality show called ‘Sit down with Yana’ that runs on Youtube as well. Barbeque was owned by long time Museveni lawyer Elly Karuhanga and an Irish national. The facility was famous as an elite outdoor eatery destination as well as a venue for parties and wedding meetings. Barbeque Lounge had been in existence for almost a decade. However, the facility has been closed for the past few weeks, a few people we talked to at Centenary Park told us that chances that it would re-open soon are little considering that the owners had fallen out shortly before it closed shop. One of the people we talked to alluded to the possibility of the facility having been in the landlord’s bad books!

t’s no longer news that singer Jose Chameleone is set to hold his ‘Legend again’ concert on December 7th at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. The news however, is that Chameleone decided to do a song with another legendary artiste in the region, as a way of celebrating the milestones across the region. During an exclusive conversation with the legendary music icon over the weekend, Chameleone disclosed to us that he had recorded a duet with Kenyan legend Redsan. Although the two share so much from their humble musical beginnings in Nairobi, they had never recorded a song together. Chameleone was however tight-lipped about the title, genre and date of release for the song. Both Chameleone and Redsan have enjoyed enoprmous support from music lovers across the east and the entire African continent. Chameleone promised that we would be the first to listen to the duet when they are both ready to drop it.

asibukawa” brings back sweet nostalgia of one of my favourite collaborations of 2014, “special someone”. This was a song by three bad- boys, AKA, Burna Boy and Sarkodie” which caught the attention of many critics because of the way the bad boys had sung to their affectionate and emotional sides. On “Wasibukawa”, it is breathtaking to listen to the patron saint of controversy get in touch with his affectionate side in a sweet passionate easy going ballad. The song is produced and written by Andre whose influence cuts across the song. Andre gives the production a mellow consistent tempo characterised by distinct acoustics. He infuses a modern day
dance beat but keeps it mild for the song not to lose its ballad factor. Andre’s influences can be picked from the lyrical content that is widely characterised by patois with an inclusion of both English and Luganda. Bebe Cool is quite laid back on this track and his composure is striking. His signature husky voice soothingly works the patois as he sings sweet nothings to his lover while pondering on where such a gem could have come from. He does justice to the lyrics and it is to no surprise considering his rich reggae musical influences. Each and every time Bebe strikes gold, one can tell and he seems to have struck an entire mine on this one.

T
his was without a doubt one of the biggest fashion trends to come out of 2017. And fast forward to 2018, the trend is back, and it’s very much on the top recommendations list. Exaggerated sleeves are a great trend to get on, simply because they make a big fashion statement when you wear them. Plus, you can choose to have them on both your casual and formal attire.
What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I have to have a new pair of heels every now and then, because I am practically obsessed with shoes. What is your worst buy ever? I bought a dress and when I got to put it on, it just flattened my buts and butt. Not a very flattering look, if you ask me.
For instance, you could add a bell sleeved top, to your denims, and add a great pair of sneakers for a casual look. Keep your top and sneakers in a pastel shade, for the perfect finish. Alternatively, next time you hit up the red carpet, how about opting for a maxi gown, complete with its own puffy sleeves? This look will work great, particularly if there isn’t much else going on with your gown. This way, your sleeves will do the statement making. Whatever your style is, whether you are more on the minimalist end, or you are the over the tope kind of fashionista, you are sure to find something interesting to try out with this trend.
What styling trick works for you all the time? I always accentuate the part of my body that I know will work with my body type with whatever outfit I am going to wear. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Mum jeans. I can’t stand them.

CHEATING on your partner is a cardinal sin when it comes to relationships. There are a number of signs your girlfriend or wife may be cheating, but according to a scientific study this one top clue is the one to follow to check if she is cheating on you: she pretends to climax. Women who pretend to climax are more likely to be cheating on you. That is according to a study in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour. It may not be entirely surprising that women who lack in sexual satisfaction are seeking it elsewhere - but the study did show that intensity and frequency of orgasms had little to do with whether women would cheat. Women may have fewer or no orgasms - but it is those who fake them are more likely to lie to their man and seek romance elsewhere. There was a strong link between how many times women faked orgasms and how likely they were to cheat, but women who do not have orgasms but do not fake it are no more likely to cheat than those who have frequent orgasms during sex. If your woman has faked orgasms in the past she is more likely to cheat again in the future, according to this interesting study, which surveyed 138 women and 121 men in heterosexual relationships.
Now then… How is a brother to really, really confirm she is only faking it?

t is the kind of thought that crosses every male mind from time to time, and it is a thought that causes untold trepidation. The moment you have decided that the girl you are seeing is much better than being just another of all the numerous bootycalls you run, is the moment you embrace the fear that she could be some other guy’s bootycall. Will she cheat? Could she be cheating already anyway? Here are a few signs you might want to pay attention to: She has mileage. In normal speak, that means she has been around a bit, sexually. A quarter of the male population in all of the city’s five divisions has seen her without her clothes on. If that is your girl’s story, the chances of her dropping her undergarments even after she has settled with you will always be high, because she basically has nothing to lose, physically and emotionally. And don’t kid yourself, if she says you do it just right, there might be another guy or two in Ntinda and Bunga and Bugolobi who she told the same thing, and actually meant it. If she gets into a comfortable zone with them, you are cooked! Her kind of job. Pardon me? Did you say your girl works in the casino? Ah, the chance of her not being hit on is as high as finding a virgin along Speke Road at 3am. You girl might truly want to
be committed to you, but if her job is the type that exposes her to men with tongues built to charm, or with wallets built to impress, then prepare to accept her teary apology when she comes to give it, that is if she has not decided that she will settle for the moneybags that gambles Shs20m a night without thinking hard about it, or the rich kid who tips 200k at the service center where is the customer care rep. You are broke. Must any explanation be written to accompany this point? Look here, you woman could be the most adorable, most understanding, most patient, least money-minded person in the world, but there will always a time she gets overwhelmed by her financial needs, and there will always be one man (or even three) willing to resolve those needs. But that will be at a ‘small’ price. You cheat too. Many women will put up with a man that is financially in a squeeze (for a while at least), or turn down financial favours. But if a man cheats, and he does a poor job disguising it, be sure that his woman is going to seek to make matters even, and there is only one way to do that.

You don’t need to be in a political office to bring change – Obama fellow Amos Kiyingi
A
mos Kiyingi is the founder of Uganda Unites – an NGO that is heavily invested in fostering peace and reconciliation focusing mostly on youth. He is one of the 12 Ugandans selected for the Obama Foundation African Leadership Fellowship that took place between July 14 – 19 in South Africa. In an interview with Matooke Republic, Kiyingi posits that his greatest take away from the fellowship is that one does not have to be in elective political offices to bring change in his or her community. “If you look at the people that were speaking to us, they are not political leaders. They simply identified challenges in their areas and created solutions. People like Mo Ibrahim, Jack Ma. They don’t have political backgrounds,” he says. The irony in Uganda is that the youth have been taught to think that for one to create any change, they have to be Members of Parliament. This logic Kiyingi says is flawed and needs to change. Kiyingi says that it has become a habit for the youth to expect the government to do everything for them including their community dams, building rural class rooms, digging feeder roads and even sweeping their own compounds. “Change starts from the small things we do where we are. Actually that is where leadership manifests. The solutions are with the youth. Of course we cannot fix everything but if we can do some things and do them well, they count a lot. When spiders combine, they can take down a lion,” he notes.
why MTN had to make the marathon more of a lifestyle event than humanitarian to attract people. “But ask yourself, what happens after you leave? If you fix a drainage problem in Bwaise but don’t teach the dwellers how to safely dispose garbage, what have you achieved? But the drainage will be blocked again soon as you leave,” he says. The Obama Foundation Fellowship brought together 200 emerging leaders from across the continent under the theme, “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” The purpose of the Fellowship was to inspire, equip and network with colleagues across the continent, deliberate on the problems they are facing in their communities and how best they can address them.
Kiyinji notes that the biggest challenge facing the youth in Uganda is that they want to be pushed to do things that benefit them. He argues that the gross lack of patriotism is what is dragging the country behind. “People want to do things for the cameras to notice. Corporations want to do community programs for CSR. People don’t want to participate in activities that are not fancy. That’s
Why Amos Kiyingi? Before starting Uganda Unites, Kiyingi worked with Basic Needs Foundation Uganda in Northern Uganda after the Lords’ Resistance Army war purpose to help youth recover from the pangs of war, build self-sustaining businesses and seek peace and reconciliation. “I was inspired the desire to have peace and the need for people to reconcile and leave harmoniously with one another. I felt that this should be countrywide and so I start-
ed Uganda Unites,” he says. In 2016, Uganda Unites working with several volunteers started off with organizing annual summits for peace, forming peace clubs in secondary schools, offering career and leadership development talks among others. “We are nonpartisan and nonconformist.
“
“I was inspired the desire to have peace and the need for people to reconcile and leave harmoniously with one another. I felt that this should be countrywide and so I started Uganda Unites.” We are just champions of positive change and unity. People tell you that Uganda is united but that is fallacy. When people are desperate
to kill others because they are of a different tribe like in the Kayunga riots, that cannot be unity,” he explains. During the riots, Kiyingi recalls having driven from Kansanga to Kitintale to pick up a friend who could not risk moving because she was from Western Uganda. “That day I saw that the alleged unity in this country is just cosmetic and that given chance, people can actually kill others because of tribe, religion and stuff like that. So I decided that we start teaching young people about peace and unity,” he notes. Kiyingi says he is angered by the people on social media who make memes ridiculing other people’s tribes without thinking about the long-term effects such jokes have on people from those tribes. He argues that jokes directed against the Basoga for example go a long away to kill children’s esteem, confidence and hinder their participation in class which in turn affects their academic performance. He urges youth to see themselves as change agents and solutions in their communities and always endeavor to break the stereotypes while promoting character development, love and peace. “Who is a Ugandan? That is the question I want everyone to reflect on. We need to be united in our diversity,” he notes.

or as low as Shs256.6 per share, one can now own a piece of Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Limited, a pharmaceutical company that specialises in the production of anti-malarial drugs and ARVs. The firm set a record as the first pharmaceutical company to list on the Ugandan Securities Exchange (USE), and one can acquire up to a minimum of 1000 shares in the company until August 24, 2018 when the Initial Public Offer (IPO) launched on Tuesday comes to a close. According to Mr. Emmanuel Katongole, the company’s Executive Chairman, the company is selling approximately 658 million shares representing 18% of the shareholding capital while its majority owners, CiplaQCIL, will maintain a majority stake of 51%. “CiplaQCIL will remain the majority shareholder but we want Ugandan investors to share in our success by investing in a company that is solving African problems using African solutions,” he said. Katongole noted that having started out as a humble company in 1997, Quality Chemicals Ltd has experienced tremendous growth from manufacturing veterinary medicines to producing drugs passed by the World Health Organization for HIV/ AIDS, Hepatitis B and Malaria. After merging with Cipla, an Indian Pharmaceutical company in 2005 to make CiplaQCIL, the company has grown tremendously covering 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and employing over 300 staff – 98% of these Ugandans, and training over 100 interns annually. Speaking at the launch of the IPO at the Kampala Serena Hotel, Mr. Nevin Bradford, the CiplaQCIL CEO, said the listing will encourage Ugandan investors share in the success of a highly competitive indigenous company. “We made about $60m last year and about one third of that was sales from exporting tablets across the region. We make sure that about half
a million HIV patients get their medication and provide malaria tablets for over 45 million people. Our target is to make sure everyone gets cheap treatment and that is why we have launched for Ugandans to invest in us today,” Bradford said. Keith Kalyegira, the CEO of the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) the regulator of the USE told the media that CiplaQCIL will boost the markets in Uganda since it is the first of its kind from the pharmaceutical industry and also the first to get approval after the CMA Act was amended.
“We not had a private company listing on the USE since 2012 so this is good for the economy but also good for the private sector as it is a means to increase a company’s financing options. Every economy needs long-term capital to thrive. The short term capital provided by banks is not enough,” he added. The IPO was officially launched by Finance Minister, Hon. Matia Kasaija and shares can be bought through authorised stock brokers or the receiving bank, Standard Chartered.

T
here is a Chinese proverb that says: “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.” To that I would add, if you are planning for lasting change in this world, educate girls! A few days ago I was so thrilled to hear that five Nigerian girls from Regina Pacis Model Secondary School (Onitsha, Anambra State) won the 2018 Technovation World Pitch competition in Silicon Valley, California. Need I say more? Wow... The young winners (ages 12-14), competing in a team they named “Save a Soul,” were: Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo and Vivian Okoye. Their team came out on top of 12 finalists (chosen from about 2,000 teams from 115 countries) who were invited to travel to California this month, eventually defeating other finalist
teams from countries like the USA, China, Spain, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Wow! Per the specs of the competition, each team developed a mobile App to solve a problem they had identified in their own communities. Wow, wow, wow, again! Huge congratulations to the #TeamSaveASoul, and their mentor, Mrs Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, founder of Edufun Technik STEM, who was invited into the school to tutor and train these young girls. What was the problem identified by these five young African techno-stars? They were worried about the high number of deaths in Nigeria resulting from use of fake drugs. (Nigeria is seen to have one of the world’s largest markets for counterfeit drugs, they said). They developed the “FD-Detector” (Fake Drug Detector) mobile app which scans a barcode to help confirm that the drug is not fake, and also checks its expiration date. Working with their mentor (with support from global sponsors like Oracle), it took the young students about five months to design this mobile App, also using coding and robot-
ics insights, in designing their solution. The Technovation World Pitch competition is a program of a US NGO called Iridescent that offers girls ages 10-18 in 100+ countries the opportunity not just to learn programming skills, but also to put on a #SolutionMindset and imagine ways to use technology to help change the world... (sound somewhat familiar?) While 2018 was the first time ever that the Nigerian team made it to the junior finals (let alone win...) let me also say a belated congratulations to the Nigerian senior division girls team (ages 15-18) that took the gold in the same competition in 2015, for developing a mobile App to tackle waste disposal in Nigeria. Wow! I am sure you will be interested to know that this year’s senior division Technovation competition was won by a team from India who developed an App to track and dispose of electronic waste by linking recyclers with e-waste producers. Congratulations to them as well! This is really amazing work, but there is so much more to be done, across our globe...
According to official estimates (UNESCO) there are about 130 million girls in the world (ages 6-17) who are out of school. Of those, 15 million are of primary school age. They estimate that half of that number in sub-Saharan Africa will never enter a classroom...
Could this be true in this day and age?
The Proprietor of the amazing Regina Pacis Model Secondary School -- a school I would respectfully love to visit just as soon as my schedule allows -- is the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, the Most Rev Valerian Okeke. He has remarked that “no sacrifice is too much in educating our children.” I couldn’t agree more. I look forward to visiting as soon as possible! Meanwhile my congratulations once again to #TeamSaveASoul, mentor Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu and her team, and everyone in Nigeria church, government and civil society who helped play a part in this victory last week as well as the international sponsors of this inspiring prize. What can we learn from this global victory for Africa? Let’s talk.

a buyer in her area. The girls have been able to pay school fees for their children, earn more income and are not scared of starvation any more or spending a lot of money on buying food. The girls have also embarked on teaching other young girls around their community about agriculture and adding them to the network. It is important to note that the Wefarm network has impact on communities on a fundamentally deep level; affecting different people on a wide spectrum. The knowledge gained through the Wefarm network empowers farmers in rural areas at no cost. This knowledge can be shared with others and used to improve their crop yield, learn better and affordable farming practices in a convenient and easy to understand way. Gone are the days when farmers had to wait for agricultural officials to make trips to their farms, today, information is a button away.

ylvia Nakigudde (24) and Rachel Nantumbwe (32) started a project to help young teenage mothers make a livelihood. The project involved starting a school, which they called Youth Education and Sports Center Uganda. The school would teach the young girls vocational skills such as tailoring, hair dressing, liquid soap making, among other skills so that these girls are groomed into strong independent women who can support their children. Soon, the need to expand their teachable skills stretched to agriculture. However, they felt under-resourced and demotivated, because most of the farming projects they had started hadn’t yielded much. This is the kind of problem that Wefarm was created to solve, and indeed when the Wefarm ambassador visited them and taught them about how to use Wefarm to seek guidance on developing agricultural skills at no cost, life changed. Without wasting time, Sylvia and Rachel immediately joined the Wefarm network and sent their first question to prove the accuracy of what the ambassador had told them. The first question they sent to the network was “how to space matooke?” and like promised, they instantly received an answer. Ever since that day, Sylvia and Rachel never looked back. They added agriculture to the many skills they teach, simply because they had solutions to their problems in their hands at for free. Sylvia, Rachel and the girls then embarked

Today, they have vegetable gardens around the school and the girls have gone on to start gardens in their own homes. They also grow large sweet potato, matooke and maize gardens that give them thrice the yield they used to get because of the knowledge they acquired from Wefarm. In September, Sylvia harvested 100kgs of maize which she instantly sold after advertising for

The story of the ‘disappearing’
T
he ultimate dream of many Ugandan sportsmen or women is to compete as a professional, since with that comes a big name/brand, and of course a matching pay packet and a life like a star. That, is perhaps the starting point to understanding why for many of our sportspeople, the only option is to vanish when presented with an opportunity to compete in the developed world. Uganda, like many other Third World countries, is known for making pre-event headlines at major sports competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games when its players vanish even before they have competed in the disciplines for which they were selected. One of the most memorable scenarios in Uganda’s case happened at this year’s Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. As many as five Ugandan athletes disappeared; boxers Regan Ssimbwa and Nasir Bashir, female table tennis player Halima Nambozo, as well as weightlifters Irene Kasubo and Kalidi Batuusa. When that happened, Minister of State for Sports Charles Bakkabulindi warned that that behaviour was bound to make it difficult for Ugandan athletes to acquire visas to attend international sports events, so it ought to be immediately checked. “We are also going to screen players more, so that we are sure athletes will not disappear
when they travel to represent the country. We must become tough with this matter,” the minister said. After such bold statements from the minister you would think an instant measure would be put in place but last month, it was alleged that three of the ladies that were part of the Lady Cricket Cranes team for
the Women’s World Cup T20 qualifiers held in Netherlands had disappeared. ‘Some games have no future’ Looking at the reports over the years of athletes to have disappeared while on international duty, it is clear some to see sports disciplines are more prone than others. Cricket, boxing, weight lifting, tennis and swimming, for example have been most notorious, even if they are not the only guilty ones.

SPAIN: LaLiga In interactions Matooke Republic had with various local sportsmen, a boxer who featured in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia revealed how he had plans to disappear, but only after participating in the opening phases of the tournament. “I kicked off on a high and advanced to [the] later stages. I was impressed by my performances which is why I wanted to fight until the end,” he said, before adding that, “I am now disappointed because since coming back nothing has changed since I am still struggling with no funds or equipment.” “Once I get another chance to make it to the team again, I will just disappear,” the boxer vowed. A high-flying rugby player we put on the spot was no different from the boxer. “Hahahaa… For sure my dream is to get to the national team and disappear in search for greener pastures,” he said, offering an insight into why the national rugby team lost three players in Germany as recently as last October. “I wish I was part of this team that went to San Francisco (for the Rugby 7s World Cup), I would be now flying in the US looking for whatever job I can get be
it cleaning toilets,” he revealed. Pressed further on why he thinks like that, he offered that he joined rugby out of passion, and according to him, some games in Uganda have no ‘future’ since they are just growing. “Our rugby still needs a lot to be put in place. We rarely get a penny from it as players yet we have to meet the medical bills if we get injured and injuries in rugby are inevitable,” he added. “Reality is as a person I enjoy rugby but I am sure it has no future we it comes to development but when I get to the national team at least I have a chance of travelling to more developed countries where I can make my breakthrough not in rugby but in terms of a job opportunity once I vanish,” he added. When contacted, Andrew Owor, the Uganda Rugby Union president, was philosophical about the disappearances of athletes, reasoning that it is not only in sports where people seek r greener pastures, but rather even doctors, pilots, and engineers go abroad, although sports is taken advantage of since it is an easier avenue through which one can get to travel without too many restrictions.
“Government must first recognise sports as one of those fields that can contribute to the economy. A lot more investment must be made, structures set and players feel comfortable to go through all the stages required to reach the desired heights,” Owor explained. “The same task applies to sports administrators to make sports not just a game but rather a career path that is well regulated,” he added. Robert Jagwe, President of the Uganda Table Tennis Association concurred. “Though we love to see our players thrive in their careers, we should not forget that the conditions they survive in while playing are far from being favourable. We need reliable structures that can see our players rise in the ranks,” Jagwe said. That would certainly help, because the route to the top for a Ugandan table tennis player is much less certain than it is for a Ugandan footballer, or long distance runner, for example, meaning that there are fewer opportunities for the former, and a higher risk of doing a disappearing act—like many before him—somewhere in Europe or USA.

n Tuesday, She Cranes had a great start of their road to African Netball Championship title defense as they cruised past lowest ranked Namibia in a 47-72 win. As anticipated, team captain Peace Proscovia led by example alongside other dependables like Rachael Nanyonga, Ruth Meme, Halima Nakacwa, Sylvia Nanyonga, Lillian Ajio and Stella Nanfuka. Today Thursday, the girls are back on court and will be up against Kenya who are the newest members of the International Netball Federation, aiming at to qualifying for their first ever Netball World Cup. Later in the day, She Cranes will face 22nd ranked Botswana while on Friday, the team will play Zambia before concluding the tournament against Zimbabwe on Saturday. Uganda is the highest ranked side in the qualifying competition as they currently occupy 7th position on the INF World Rankings ladder. The team hopes to defend the title and qualify for our third World Cup with the most recent appearance having been in 2015 held in Sydney where we finished 8th. The other appearance happened in 1979. Only two slots are left in the race to the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England.
