Hardly a week after Gen. Mugisha Muntu announced his exit from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party and the creation of his “New Formation,” the party has already released a plan to purge all his loyalists. According to letters that Matooke Republic has seen, FDC Secretary General, Nandala Mafabi has ordered the evacuation of FDC offices by members aligned to Gen. Muntu and ordered them to handover offices by October 4. Mafabi has also ordered a countrywide party membership audit to verify which members are staying within the party and who are joining Muntu’s New Formation.

Condoms, mineral water, vehicles and other products of the UPDF BY MOSES ABEKA

T

o borrow public relations language, it’s safe to say the ‘flagship’ service of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) is to provide peace and security. Banking on the peace and security in the country, the minds of our gallant soldiers are waging war against reliance on imported products. As you read this, UPDF officers are on the frontline of this ‘economic war’. (Forget the Development Channel kind of ‘war’) UPDF is manufacturing or assembling various products thus creating a self reliant and self-sustaining eco-system that could save as an ideal model for African progress. Indeed, this is the fundamental change in swift action!

1986 forcing the country to deport them. According to Brig Kyanda, this motivated President Museveni to lead the country in combating HIV /AIDS through a multisectoral response mechanism. The condom is manufactured with support from partners PACE and University Research Company. Armoured ‘Mamaba’ vehicles Forget about the Arua by-election incident, UPDF assemblies armoured vehicles! In 2012 the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) contracted Impala Services and Logistics, sister

The mandate to be productive UPDF is mandated to serve as a productive force. The National Enterprise Corporation, which is layman’s terms, could pass for the ‘commercial wing’ of the force as established in 1989 by an Act of Parliament to produce goods and services that are beneficial to the Defence Forces and the general public. The commercial ventures are taken through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. Here are some of the products proudly associated with the UPDF! Ulinzi condoms UPDF has literally turned the guns on HIV/ AIDS. UPDF officers will no longer rely on hand outs from the Ministry of Health. Our sexually active officers will save extra cash to save thanks to Ulinzi condoms.

“UPDF is manufacturing or assembling various products thus creating a self reliant and self-sustaining eco-system that could save as an ideal model for African progress.” Yes, UPDF has also introduced their own made condoms! The Chief of Staff Land Forces Brig Leopold Kyanda launched the ‘Ulinzi’ condom brand at UPDF and Forces Headquarters in Bombo on Monday October 1. ‘Ulinzi’, is a Swahili word for protection. The camouflage branded condom carries a tagline, ‘Usiende Nyama Kwa Nyama’, loosely translating to ‘don’t engage in live sex.’ Brig Kyanda described HIV/AIDS as a threat to national security. He revealed that 18 out of 60 military officers tested HIV Positive while on a course in Cuba in

company of South Africa’s Twiga Services and Logistics, to design a Mamba class armoured vehicle for manufacture in Uganda. Under the programme, armour plate is cut and bent in South Africa and shipped out to the client country for manufacture and assembly. Some armour steel is now sourced directly from Sweden, which is cut using a state of the art plasma cutter which was recently installed at the facility under the Transfer of Technology programme. In

Brig Richard Karemire 2012 the first two Nyokas were supplied for operational evaluations. In 2013 the manufacture and assembly of the Nyoka began in earnest in Uganda under a transfer of technology programme which continues today. The Armoured Vehicle Facility at Maga Maga Barracks, Mayuge district has produced 20 Nyoka APC and another ten are currently being produced.

Uzima Mineral Water In 2015, UPDF launched ‘Uzima Mineral Water’, their mineral water brand under the Chieftaincy of Welfare and Production. Though the market is quite competitive with several players and of course, the competition from soft drinks and beverages, Uzima Mineral Water is yet another surprising product of the national army. Orthopedic legs UPDF is also involved in making prosthetic legs for officers who have been amputated or injured in battle. The products include prosthetic limbs and shoes to ease mobility. UPDF Construction Services UPDF boosts of a construction wing with several officers engaged in construction works. These have constructed several staff houses and other construction projects as designated to the men in uniform.

Kiira Motors to start car manufacture in 2020 BY ALEX TAREMWA

A

junior lecturer’s dream at Makerere University that started with the aid of only one student is set to birth Uganda’s first manufactured car if Kiira Motor’s plans are anything to go by. In an exclusive interview with Matooke Republic, Paul Isaac Musazizi, the Kiira Motors Corporation CEO intimated that plans were underway to prepare the 100 acre production plant in Jinja

staff participated in Vehicle Design Summit in the United States, hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The idea then transitioned from a mere extracurricular activity at MAK into research arm for automobile engineering until 2009 when it received money from the Presidential Initiative for Science and Technology Innovation Programme. With the money, the Kiira Motor EV vehicle was designed followed by the solar-powered Kayoola Solar Bus – an

Industrial Area where the production will take place. This follows a Cabinet resolution to furnish the Corporation with Shs24bn to roll out the concept that will see Ugandan made cars hit the road by 2022. According to Musasizi, the plans are already underway to prepare the production plant at the industrial park and he is confident that by December 2019, the minimum requirements to begin initial production will be in place. “As I speak, an industrial electricity line of 33 kilovolts has been drawn to the site and by the end of the month; an equivalent waterline will have been drawn. We have contracted someone to do the roads in the park and we already have the human capital, he said. Start delayed explained When Kiira Motors Corporation was launched in 2010, the plan was that assembly of cars will have started by 2018. This however was unable to happen due to serial financial setbacks that affected the production schedule. The idea of making vehicles in the country started in 2007 when a group of Makerere University students and

idea that Musasizi credits to the now MAK Vice Chancellor – Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe. “I visited Nawangwe’s office when he was still Dean and I told him that we were planning on making an electric taxi to help with the public transport system. He said; ‘don’t make taxis, they are a menace. Make a bus and put solar on it.’ “When I went back, I told the team of the Engineering students to stop the taxi production immediately. We are making a solar bus.” The Kayoola fails road test After the hard work and millions of dollars that were injected into the production of the bus, Kiira Motors was met with public resentment when the bus that had just been launched by President Yoweri Museveni failed to climb a hill along Bukoto road near Kabila Country Club. According to Musasizi, the fault was a result of a human error caused by an engineer who short circuited the bus’s electric system on the eve of its launch. “We were all too excited after the bus successfully made the journey from Namboole Stadium to our offices in Ntinda. One of the engineers went

after a month. Meanwhile you are walking. At KMC, you buy a car and you are sure that the spares are done here, the servicing and you supporting your own. That is a better deal,” he said. The passionate CEO also noted that his marketing team is working out a payment plan which will allow Ugandans to buy the cars and pay in installments so as not to feel the pinch at one go. Their plan, he says is to make mass mobility solutions starting with the public transport sector will at first produce buses and other commercial vehicles before going into the into the bus after it returned and begun tinkering with one of the equipment of 700 volts. He connected it to a system of just 12 volts and boom – short circuit. We tried to do the best we could in less than 24 hours to the launch and since we had some other equipment, we went forward with the launch but the gear peddles (solar buses uses one gear) failed at Kabila. It couldn’t pick power so the bus had to be towed to the top of the hill but after that, the bus drove home.” Despite the setback, Musasizi said that KMC has since refurbished the bus with both manual and automatic gear peddles adding that production of buses, car seats and other accessories will go on as planned. Prices and sustainability Although the idea of green power automobile is not an entirely new phenomenon, it is unique in a Ugandan and African setting.

“You buy a Porsche and what it breaks down, they tell the spare will be shipped in after a month, meanwhile, you are walking. At KMC, you buy a car and you are sure that the spares are done here, the servicing and you supporting your own. That is a better deal.” This is the reason Musasizi was recently awarded as one of Africa’s best 11 individuals with groundbreaking ideas in Business Leadership at the International Forum on African Leadership in New York, USA. But however phenomenal the Kiira Motors cars are in the areas of mobility solutions and clean energy, the prices at which they are set after they hit market are not ones ordinary Ugandans can afford. According to KMC’s website, company’s products will include Sedans, pick-ups, crosser-overs, buses and trucks. A Sedan costs $25,000, a Crossover $28,000 and $32,000 for a Pick-up. If it is mass produced, the Kayoola bus will cost up to $58,000 which Musasizi says is a competitive price. His argument is that people will not just be buying the cars for the transport’s sake but also to support their own – the Ugandaness if you wish to put it that way. Musasizi also noted that if one draws comparison with others cars on market from Japan, Germany or the USA, their average age is 16 years old yet the World Health Organisations (WHO) recommends the purchase of cars 15 years and below. “What are people buying? You buy a Porsche and when it breaks down, they tell you the spare will be shipped in

personal vehicle phase. “Making vehicles in Uganda is a reality and Ugandans want to be part of that. That is why we are engaging and training local talent to be able to see the plan through. We have students from outside Makerere such as Kampala University, Kyambogo University, Muteesa I Royal University, Mbarara and most recently from across the globe that come to train here.” Musasizi believes that these young engineers will sustain the innovation at KMC through making high quality products that will elicpse the current competition from giants such as Toyota, Isuzu among others.

Gossip queen, Mary Luswata bounces back to television

J

ust a few weeks back, motor-mouth Judith Namazzi best known to her legion of fans as Judithiana called it quits at Urban TV after four years of talking sex, sex and sex on her Sunday evening TV show, Salon Talk. Many were quick to imagine a lifeless Salon Talk as a worthy replacement for Judithiana seemed a tall order. Not even a month down the road, Mary Luswata - choose to call her the mother of all gossipers if you want - has bounced back to the big screen as Judithiana’s replacement. Mary Luswata became a popular name on Ugandan television after being host to popular Scoop on Scoop where she ruffled feathers with popular celebrities with her hard biting gossip and signature diss lines. After taking a while off the big screen, we can only wait and see how much she has to offer. Or not.

A pass, Fik Fameika and beat-making guru, DJ Maphorisa team up for new smash hit

A

ll good things seem to be going both A pass and Fik Fameica’s ways this year. Besides having one of the biggest smash hits on the charts, the two young stars have recently teamed up with influential beat maker Dj Maphorisa and Congolese rapper Rouge in a new smash hit titled, Midnight drum. DJ Maphorisa brings his Gqom influences to the track and both Fik and A pass bring their A game on this one. The track has got tongues wagging in just a week of its release and it is already making

massive rotation on the airwaves. DJ Maphorisa is best known for his Midas effect when it comes to production in that almost every track he touches instantly becomes a smash hit and by the look of things, “Midnight Drum” with its eccentric production and flawless delivery seems to be no different. The new school kids seem to be giving the old folks a run for their money because a few years back, it is the old folks that seemed to get such off- the- hook collaborations.

“Apostle Grace Lubega is a child of Satan pretending to be of God,” Stella Nyanzi

W

hen it comes to destroying anything that seems to conflict with her interests, Stella Nyanzi does not take hostages. Apostle Grace Lubega of the Phaneroo Ministries seems to have touched the ‘leopardess’ the “wrong way” after calling Bobi Wine a “drug addict”. Nyanzi wrote a very lengthy post calling him gay and a criminal. She starts off the post by calling the Pastor a “son of Satan” who pretends to be a child of God. She further refers to him as an idiot due to his inability to comprehend that Bobi Wine has changed the Ghetto. After this very vicious attack on the Apostle, we can only wait for his next preaching for his comeback, but, whatever it is; we sure have learnt to never cross paths with the uncompromising researcher.

UPDF rolls out new set of camouflage condoms

T

he UPDF seems to have a serious F.O.M.O syndrome as they seem to always find a way of being part of everything. We had it with NAADS, them wanting to infiltrate the Miss Uganda pageant and of course being available when doctors went on strike. The UPDF cannot stomach the fact that many Ugandans are having a lot of un-

protected sex and therefore, the UPDF directorate of HIV and Aids in partnership with Pace Uganda have launched a new brand of condoms as a preventive strategy of HIV Aids. However, the most eye catching aspect of this drive is the condom pack whose design is made of military camouflage. According to sources, the camouflage is to lure more people to embrace the use of protection.

ornings at X fm have not been the same ever since the cheerful Siima Sabiiti, the very opinionated Rudende, the sly Libolo and the spontaneous KK called it quits from the airwaves. Whereas Siima and Libolo are still at the industrial area based Vision group, Rudende has since moved to different ventures. However, the good news is that fans won’t miss Rudende, Siima and KK for long as the trio have bounced back in a new podcast series they’ve decided to called “Not just radio, so we just did it.” The podcast series will be running on the internet and it will be produced by Millennial Digital UG.

MIDNIGHT DRUM

I

n just a week of its release, midnight drum is already a smash hit and it has everything to do with the king of Gqom, Dj Maphorisa meeting three other immensely talented folks, from two different countries whose greatest thirst is one for greatness. Maphorisa, one of the most influential and revered producers on the continent, exports his Gqom influences to this song and goes all in while at it. The song totally has a South Africa sound to it. Rouge, a

TALKINGMUSIC WITH TREVOR TAREMWA

Congolese female rapper sets the song in motion as her fast paced bars and punch lines fuse in smoothly with Maphorisa’s uncompromisingly fast paced heavy hitting Gqom instrumental. She brings a dance vibe to her verse with her catchy rhyme and prose. One cannot help but fall in love with A-pass’ spontaneity and charm on this track for he totally changes the pace of the song. With a distinct clear cutting electro assisted auto tune voice, he comes in with his abstract cum playful Luganda lyrics, very carefully stringed together with very soft piano keys setting the tension for the mother of all verses, Fik Fameica’s! Fik literally rips the beat apart like he owns it. In his latest collaborations, Fik Fameica is making a statement that he is not afraid of jumping on any track and making his mark. He does not let his guard down on the fast paced Gqom sound, he comes through with his heavy hitting lyrics, very swift and remarkable rhyme and poetry and certainly does not leave his spontaneous side behind. In split seconds Fik closes one of what I predict to be 2018’s hottest collaborative efforts. With new generation ninjas like Fik Fameica and A pass bringing this much heat to the game, the old game players ought to review their craft before it is too late. Overwhelming effort I must mention.

EVOKE GRAND FINALE Revellers were on Thursday night treated to a show stopping musical extravaganza as the monthly Evoke Nights came to a riveting end. The closing episode of the Tusker Lite-sponsored event ended in an electrifying style with ground breaking performances from the season’s best performers heights the preacher, Lus the poet, Nobel the Beat Boxer, Izaya the composer and the Evoke dancers who left revelers in awe. The two and half hour musical production was held at AcChi restaurant in Bugolobi.

Living I Relating

DATING JUST DER GOT MUCH HAR

I

think most relationships in both this and the past generation have been borne of love at first sight. You look at each other and something immediately clicks. The difference between the past and this generation is that the former had the opportunity to study each other’s continence before the bells went off while the latter studies profile pictures and Facebook updates. And this has caused a lot of mental distress for this generation. The past generation actually had to meet face to face for any bells to ring. Specifically for any coitus to happen. Yes. Stories were told about Kamulegeya’s son who could slaughter a whole cow all by himself, had the hottest cowboy boots, and looked like a god of the mountains and hills. This would get maidens excited but until they came face to face with Kamulegeya’s charm, they were contented with where they were. Today’s generation is not contented. Especially those on social media (don’t get me wrong, that is not entirely a bad thing, it could even be encouraged). But I am of the view that the discontent in this generation is causing more harm than good. And it has only just began. We want reaction and we want it now. We will bend over backwards to have it. Both the discontent actor and the reactor want the same outcome; to be recognised. There has never been a time in my life where I’ve witnessed the game of hunter and hunted so perfectly played like I witness it online. Only that this one ends in a disturbing manner. HEALTH

Why you should eat brown bread

B

rown whole grain bread is a nutritious staple in any diet because of the health benefits it has. Whole grain breads contain a variety of vitamins and minerals essential for proper body function and healthy weight maintenance. But do you know the full range of brown bread’s nutritional value? If not, simply read on:

Nutrients

Brown breads that are labeled “whole grain” contain a large amount of nutrients. One of the most important features of brown bread is the fibre content. Brown bread also contains most B vitamins -- including riboflavin, thiamine and niacin -- which help the body acquire energy from food. Brown whole grain breads also contain folate, pantothenic acid and vitamins E and K.

Benefits

Adding brown bread to your diet has many benefits. The fiber contained in brown bread keeps your bowel movements regular and stools soft, according to MayoClinic. com. Fibre also helps lower LDL, or bad cholesterol, and helps you maintain a healthy weight and helps keep your blood sugar steady.

Variety

Another benefit to making brown bread a big part of your diet is the fact that it can be prepared and eaten in a variety of ways. You can use it for making sandwiches at lunchtime or toast at breakfast, or spread low-fat cheese on it as a snack. Brown bread can also be eaten anytime throughout the day, without any preparation at all. space. And both have lost their original baseline. This is enough to cause anyone insurmountable distress. Enough to lead to a mental breakdown. Your love at first sight is in fact your love in Utopia. How can this not be when you live your life for social media? A place specifically designed to give you all the fantasies you have ever imagined? It is

only natural that you fall in love with the characters in this greatest invention of the century. The virtual world. You will have to manoeuvre through these fine blue prints to learn where your place is. And you will have to do it the hard way. Unlike the past generation where all it took was a whistle and couple of knocks on your window pane.

Amount

According to MayoClinic.com, 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates. On a 2,000-calorie diet, then, roughly 900 to 1,300 calories should come from carbohydrates. One slice of brown bread contains around 15 to 20 g of carbohydrates, making it a healthy way to get high-quality nutrition and to meet your daily carbohydrate requirements.

Study explains why humans remain in bad relationships

Forgiveness… It is all about our forgiving and compassionate nature, apparently. Plus… Most people are ready to dismiss previous misgivings of their partners as soon as they behave correctly. How it works

Humans are inherently forgiving, which could explain why people stay in bad relationships and jobs, a study by Oxford University, Yale and University College London has found. The research which was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour showed that even when a person takes part in an immoral act, people are ready to dismiss their previous misgivings as soon as they behave correctly. Assistant professor Molly Crockett, at Yale University said: “The brain forms social impressions in a way that can enable forgiveness. “Because people sometimes behave badly by accident, we need to be able to update bad impressions that turn out to be mistaken. “Otherwise, we might end relationships pre-

maturely and miss out on the many benefits of social connection.” In a series of experiments, more than 1,500 participants observed the choices of two strangers who faced a moral dilemma - whether to inflict painful electric shocks on another person in exchange for money. While the ‘good’ stranger mostly refused to shock another person for money, the ‘bad’ stranger tended to maximise their profits despite the painful consequences. The subjects were asked their impressions of the strangers’ moral character and how confident they were about those impressions. The participants rapidly formed positive impressions of the good stranger, but were less confident in condemning the person making the immoral decisions. And when the bad stranger occasionally made a generous choice, subjects’ impressions immediately improved - until they witnessed the stranger’s next transgression. “The human mind is built for maintaining social relationships, even when partners sometimes behave badly,” said Prof Crockett.

STUDENTS DEVELOP PEDAL-POWERED GROUNDNUT SHELLING MACHINE

N

dejje University’s Faculty of Engineering has developed a manually pedal powered groundnut shelling machine aimed at easing stress and cries of small farmers over low productivity and market value for their produce. According to the information shared on the university’s official website, the Ndejje University fabricated sheller will cost UGX 1,078,000/, a less fee compared to the current market with good

shelling efficiencies that value ranging between UGX 550,000 to UGX 1,500,000 for both manual and powered machines. The university final year students of Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and innovators of the project, Stella Kizanye and Brian Ssemwogerere were optimistic about the work rate of the improved machine dubbed “Made from Ndejje sheller.” “Farmers have ended up selling unshelled groundnuts that give them very

low market value. Now that will be history when the newly fabricated sheller goes on market. And to make it worse most farmers in rural areas have no electricity and therefore cannot use the current market powered shellers,” Kizanye, one of the brains behind this innovation said. According to Ssemwogerere, local farmers will be able to sell shelled groundnuts and avoid being exploited by money-minded businessmen. “Once the university embarks on mass production for the local market, farmers will be able to sell shelled groundnuts and avoid being cheated by unscrupulous businessmen. The economic situation of the farmers will consequently be boosted,” ascertained Ssemwogerere. In Uganda, traditional methods are used for shelling groundnuts which include hitting with sticks on a flat surface and the most common being use of hands. The use of hands is particularly good for the selection of seed for planting the following season as there is less damage to the seeds, thus avoiding fungal infections. However, shelling groundnuts using this newly developed machine from Ndejje University will save farmers from employing more manpower for the shelling process as well as the time spent.

S

tudents of the International University of East Africa (IUEA) were excited by the surprise appearance of dancehall star Vinka at the Mr and Miss IUEA ceremony and the celebration of the 7th Anniversary of the University. The students were informed that there would be a guest surprise performance at the event but the names were not disclosed until when the emcee announced the next performance sending students into immense excitement. Leticia Bahati from Congo and Joseph Mwesigwa from Uganda emerged winners of the contested positions of Miss and Mr International University of East

Africa (IUEA) respectively to represent the university for the year 2018/2019. The competitions took place at the university auditorium in Kansanga with representation from five countries including Uganda, Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan. There were 13 aspirants for the title of Miss IUEA and 14 Mr IUEA. Everything was presented in 7 categories that included casual wear, swim wear, dinner wear, talents, office wear, creative wear, cultural wear up-to when 20 were eliminated. Some of these students were however awarded for Miss and Mr Popularity, Mr and Miss Congeniality, Miss and Mr Talent and those when had the best proposal.

“When one becomes Mr/Miss IUEA, they become ambassadors of the university and get to represent it at different events and impact on the lives of the students,” said Alice, a former Miss IUEA. Bahati was particularly excited about the competition because it was her first time to participate in any competition of the kind. She is usually under immense pressure at the thought of competing even for elective positions but was able to push herself to be part of the pageant. “The fact that I pushed myself to do this and I actually won boosts my confidence and has made me believe in myself,” she said.

Trends I Slaying I Killing It

Martha Kay Media personality

CELEB STYLE

H

ow would you describe your style? My style is what I would describe as classy and chic. I like to look elegant with anything that I wear.

TREND ALERT! BUCKET HATS T

he current heat in Kampala is not only the perfect excuse to wear lighter clothing, but also go extra on your accessorizing game. And one of the items top on the recommendation list are the bucket hats. This unisex accessory will not only work well with your casual outfits but is also a great way to add print and colour to your outfit.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? My eyebrows must always be on fleek. Plus I always need to have a lipstick or lip gloss on me. What is your worst buy ever? Those shift dresses. They always make me look like a sack of potatoes because of my body type. So, for now I am staying away from them. What styling trick works for you all the time? I always endeavor to go minimal on my accessories. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? The short shorts! I don’t even know how girls are able to wear those things and be strutting all over the place.

Your styling options with this hat vary from adding it to your dungarees and tee look, to wearing it with your denim shorts and sneakers outfit. These hats also have the provision of prints, and popping shades like orange, red, green and even yellow. So you can always play around with these and until you zero down to the look you are achieving. And yes, they are unisex

street style @ZipperAtafo Black and white is a great styling trick.

@Thee_stunner_angellah A great plunging neckline makes for a great detail.

Uganda in need of national payment system

A comprehensive National Payment System to provide an oversight framework for payment service providers, operators and instruments is urgently required… Mr Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the Bank of Uganda governor

U

p to three innovative projects stand to share Shs114 million in funding through the second edition of the Total Startupper challenge, which was announced Tuesday. The 2018-2019 version of Total Uganda’s “Startupper of the Year” campaign aims to promote enterprise by turning young people’s innovations and passions into sustainable businesses. “Total calls on young people to submit their projects for the creation or development of a company in any business sector,” a statement from the firm said. The statement added that the challenge is free and open to any Ugandan citizen aged 35 years and below. While launching the contest at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Mr. Pierre Jessua, Total’s country chair, said: “Total wishes to encourage and support entrepreneurship through a social and societal challenge, aiming at a tangible contribution to the African economy.” Initiated by the Total Group in 39 African countries, the challenge will support innovative projects

which are less than two years old, “offering finalists and winners significant exposure as they will be able to benefit from the wide coverage of the Total network in order to create visibility for their projects as well as benefit from financial and professional assistance from the Group,” the firm said. The application process will start on October 9, 2018 and end on November 13, 2018. Application and contest rules are available on the website: http://startupper.total.com/. A new category, of Top Female Entrepreneur, has also been introduced this year to encourage women to participate in greater numbers in the Startupper challenge. A jury of professionals will pre-select up to 10 of the best projects in Uganda based on the following criteria: how innovative, original, and daring they are. Projects will also be selected on development potential and their capacity to improve the living conditions of the local population. The 10 finalists shall then present to the jury which will then choose the best projects. The first edition of the challenge, launched in 2015 in 34 African countries, produced 102 winners from 24,000 applications that were submitted.

I

t’s time for our entrepreneurship to touch the lives of people in the rural areas. I’ll be saying this to you time and again for weeks, months and years to come! This week I would like you to take time to go through this short video. It’s 23 minutes but will be a data bundle well spent. Watching it brought tears to my eyes, because I did not know about this work at all. That might surprise you but I will explain later... A few years ago, I decided to buy a loss-making bank in Zimbabwe. The decision brought a howl of protest from a group of people called analysts (these guys monitor the activities of publicly-listed companies). We shut down its 40 bank branches, and that brought even more howls of protest. The bank’s management resisted our vision for the future of the bank, telling me to my face that what I was proposing was “not banking.” I fired them all within days and some of them took me to court whilst others enlisted politicians to harass me. I asked a

young man who was completing his PhD in England, Dr Lance Mambondiani, to return home and run it. You will see him in the video.

Fast forward...

The rebranded bank (Steward Bank) was integrated into our telecoms company and turned into what we call a “digital bank.” It has very few branches, yet has the largest branch network in the country through what we call an “agency bank.” I told them to go out and bank the “unbanked and unbankable.” We recruited tens of thousands of depositors by offering them bank accounts with deposits of $1. Today at 800,000++ customers, we are well on our way to one million in a country of 13m people... officially the biggest bank in Zimbabwe by number of customers. (Our system almost crashed at one point because we had so many people wanting to open an account with us!) We intend to reach an additional 6m through our mobile money service (EcoCash). One million smallholder farmers have been

integrated in the system, and we’re able give them a loan in a matter of minutes without collateral. I will write about that program one day. Steward (Digital) Bank is now considered by many experts around the world to be the way Africa should organize its commercial banking. We like to call it “the bank for people who hate banks”! We have empowered 3,000 agents to offer limited banking services in the most remote parts of the country, where opening a branch would not have been cost effective. In return, we give them a commission. All transactions are done on the phone and through other unconventional platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp! We operate it as part of a group we call Cassava Fintech. Last year the group generated almost a quarter of a billion dollars in revenue ($250m) in Zimbabwe alone! It is by far and away the largest financial services business in the country. We are now developing blockchain and artificial intelligence systems to help the rural

poor with loans and livestock management. We even have a drone company that helps smallholder farmers inspect their crops! I told you that I did not know about the rural community programs of Steward Bank, until a few days ago. As a leader, I don’t focus on detail. I recruit and empower the likes of Lance and Natalie (who runs EcoCash). I engage and help infuse them with a vision. Remember what I’ve said here before about the importance of excellent #People and #Partners... They along with their staff also read what I write on this very platform you’re reading now. They sometimes call me or even write on this platform. “Find a way to put an egg in the hands of every child under 10 years old at school. Do it in a sustainable way that does not lose us money.” This is what I told our executives. Now the people I said this to were not farmers... They are our telecoms, banking, and media execs, and other techies. Let’s see what they come up with!

To be continued.

Opinions I News I Trivia

Allan Okello: I have Allan Okello is one Ugandan football’s brightest talents, having burst onto the scene two years ago. He told William Kasoba about his journey so far. I cannot talk about payments but what I am sure of, everyone gets sufficient salary that’s why you are seeing smiling faces all over. What has it been like working with Coach Mike Mutebi so far? It’s not an easy thing because truth is, he is a tough coach. Remember no coach can ever be good to you if he wants you to achieve. The toughest coaches are the best, and working with Coach Mike has been very good with a great experience. Coach Mike always says you’re not yet ready for the senior national team, what is your take on that? Yeah… maybe he knows better because he is the one who has groomed me this far. But anytime I get a chance to be summoned, I am ready to compete with the best.

Okello showing off his jersey after signing for KCCA in 2016

Who is Allan Okello? Allan Okello is from Lira and I am a Langi. My journey here [KCCA FC] started in 2016 when playing for the Under 17s before I got promoted to the senior team. After finishing my primary education in Lira, I joined Kibuli SS where I studied for six years from S1 up to S6. However, I did not join Kibuli as a footballer. I only joined the school team after two years. How were you juggling life studying at Kibuli and playing for KCCA? Surely it was not very easy. Kibuli knows no footballers, and we are all treated as students. You may be studying on a football bursary but when it’s time for class you have to be in class. It’s only after class that I could go for training. This helped me a lot to streamline my studies alongside playing my football. You finished your A’ Level last year. Are you continuing to university or are you now specifically concentrating on football? Yes I am going to continue with my studies but not in Uganda. In one or two years I may not be in Uganda. I will be in some other country just waiting for my wishes to come true so I will go and read from outside I think. Is there anyone in your family playing football? Yes…..My family is a football family but the

(File photos)

Since I am participating in the local league, I have no role model rather I have competitors. I want to be their role model

What is your ambition for the new season, and which teams are you expecting to give KCCA the stiffest challenge? My biggest ambition is winning the title, but I also want to be the league top scorer as a way of helping my team win games. On the issue of challenges, I say a league is league, every team is in to challenge. But SC Villa and Vipers are the biggest threat. Is your dream to play for KCCA FC forever or you dream of a future beyond? No Ugandan footballer has a dream to only play for a local club. I have a huge dream of playing professional football outside

Uganda. We heard reports that Ajax wanted to sign you; how true was that? You never know it might have been true. But my role as a player is to work hard and impress on the pitch. This makes the work of my agents easy and such reports will eventually come true. If you had to choose a club to play for Europe, which one would it be? I would like to play for many clubs in Europe teams like Manchester United, Barcelona, Arsenal among others but it’s not an easy thing. But when I get a chance I will fully utilise it since it’s my best wish. Who is your role model in the game (local and foreign)? Since I am participating in the local league, I have no role model rather I have competi tors. I want to be their role model instead of them being mine. And for the international, since I am a midfielder Andres Iniesta is my role model but also love Lionel Messi and Luka Modric. What motivates you? A lot of things motivate me in my career. I started my career yearning to become a champion, so I am a hard worker in training and during match days. You know even God can’t let you down if you show you are in it to achieve. Besides my early success during my high school made me believe I can collect more accolades.

most prominent was my uncle Bob Obira who played for different local clubs like my club now KCCA, Express, SC Villa, among others and he is the one who has groomed me. Who inspired you to take up football as your career? Obviously my uncle Bob Obira has inspired me a lot and he is still pushing me to achieve more. How special is it having lots of fellow youngsters on the team than when you had just joined? It always feels good to have my age mates on the team. We are now maturing into a very strong team. Are you paid the same as the senior players? How much is that by the way?

City Oilers, Power

in ‘supremacy’ final

Golfers feel new course as Serena JW Open enters day two BY EDWARD KALEMA

T

he long-awaited inaugural Serena Johnnie Walker Open teed off yesterday with more than 200 golfers from all over the world gracing the event at the refurbished Serena Kigo Golf Course. There was an air of excitement among the players as Uganda Golf Club Lady Captain Ann Abeja stated; “I think the course is world class because of the investments and level of skill used to design it. They took advantage of the environment and the place just looks fabulous with the water. It’s a big candidate for international competitions.” Tournament sponsors Johnnie Walker are using the Open to continue building the brand’s long-standing partnership with golf, while for the Serena Kigo club captain Moses Matsiko, ensuring that the honours remain at home is his primary concern. “We have some good players who will put up good fights all the way and I am confident when it comes to the professionals. Fred Wanzala has a great chance,”Matsiko said. The four-day event tourney enters its second day today.

Briefs BY WILLIAM KASOBA

T

he 2018 Tusker Lite National Basketball league best of seven final playoffs between five-time winners City Oilers and BetWay Power tipped off yesterday at the MTN Arena, Lugogo. Despite the defending champions Oilers having the bragging rights after claiming five straight titles, it is too early to write off Power as both teams look to equal record league winner Falcon’s six titles. Power won game one 85-66. To storm this year’s final; the two local giants (Oilers and Power) both won their best of five playoffs 3-1 against KIU Titans

and JKL Dolphins respectively. However, Oiler had the craziest scare after trailing the Titans in game one only to turn things around. The moneybags are playing their sixth consecutive final and Mandy Juruni is confident that his side is made for such stages. “We have played these games and series for many years now and its evident we have been champions for the past five years. We have experienced all scenarios and even this time round we are ready for the battle,” Juruni said. With a roaster dripping with experience thanks to players like; Landry Ndikumana, Stephen Omony, Josh Jonhson, and Jimmy

Enabu, the Oilers stand every chance to continue their dominance. Yet they can expect tough questions from a BetWay Power outfit fresh from missing out on last year’s final and desperate to halt the Oilers’ monopoly. Geoffrey Soro, Paul Odong, Joseph Ikong and Stephen Wundi are the star players expected to make Power shine. Game two is slated for Friday, October 5 at the MTN Arena. The third and fourth playoff games for both men and women will be played on Sunday, October 7. KCCA Leooards face A1 Challenge in the women’s category while KIU Titans play against JKL Dolphins in the men’s category.

Pirates start Uganda Cup defence in Mbale Pirates have for the last one year blown away every opponent they have come across. They have also won four trophies on the spin in the Uganda Cup, league, Sevens title and recently the Makerere 10s. Saturday sees them return to where the silverware haul started when they start their Uganda Cup defence against Mbale Elephants. It was their first gong in a decade and little did they know three more were on the way. The Sea Robbers are in for a tough season as every side wants to beat them, making the Uganda Cup their first stern test in a quest to replicate last year`s form.
