Your cat and the Ageing Process

Being a cat owner is a very rewarding experience and because they become a beloved family member, it can be very heartbreaking when they fall ill, age or pass away.

It’s a good idea to prepare your family for your cat’s ageing, long before it takes hold. As a pet owner, my number one suggestion is to diagnose the problems early. If you know or feel that your cat isn’t themselves, don’t prolong taking your cat to the vet for a proper diagnosis. This may mean the difference between suffering and living a long, quality life.

As your cat ages, you will need to make adjustments:

As a cat gets older, their nutritional requirements change. The kidneys are usually the first organs to show signs of ageing, preventable through a managed diet.

Your vet will suggest the best health management plan for your cat through medications and supplements to prevent, or aid in the management of disease or illness.

As a cat ages, they may show signs of arthritis, deafness or blindness, which directly impacts the way they move around their environment. Small, simple adjustments like moving obstacles, providing steps onto the bed, or preventing them from going outdoors may be all you need to do.

Throughout your cat’s life, you played with them, groomed them and watched them climb trees for their entertainment. Now, as they age, their need for happiness will vary as they can’t do the things they used to do. You will need to discover what it is that makes your cat happy now that they’re older and work out ways to provide a rich environment for them.

Cats won’t show signs of weakness and illness until it’s at the extreme because in the wild, they would become prey. Luckily for cats, they age very well...

If you know or feel that your cat isn’t themselves, don’t prolong taking your cat to the vet for a proper diagnosis.
