KARCHER STEAM CLEANERS From Cleanliness to Hygiene

In a short conversation with Mr. Rakesh Handoo, General Manager – Home and Garden, Karcher Cleaning Systems Pvt Ltd, Noida, we came to know about the details and applications of a new concept in home cleaning – Steam Cleaners. Karcher Steam Cleaner range offers a hygienic solution to daily cleaning needs with a whole range of applications be it your kitchen, floors, bathrooms, windows, radiators, etc.

Q: What is a steam cleaner and how is the cleaning done? A: The function of a steam cleaner is similar to the function of an electric kettle or a pressure cooker Water is filled into a firmly closed kettle and heated until it starts boiling. Steam develops. Depending on the kettle, this procedure lasts between 1 and 6 minutes per liter of water. Cleaning depends on 3 things when it comes to steam cleaners: Temperature – The hotter the steam, the quicker dirt is dissolved. Dirt particles are more quickly heated than the surface. Different thermal strains develop. Thereby dirt is blasted off. Speed - Steam leaves the nozzle with a speed of 170 km/h due to the pressure in the boiler.

Cloth and Tools - Cleaning cloth collect the dirt and additionally help to dissolve it mechanically. Q: What are the benefits of steam cleaning? A: Steam cleaning with Karcher Steam Cleaners is environmentfriendly and healthier as there is no use of cleaning agents, disinfectants, detergents or chemicals. There is very little water consumption, e.g., 1 liter of water can produce 1,700 liters of steam. It makes everything hygienically clean, also in areas difficult to access. It is effortless as cleaning in most cases is done without rubbing and scrubbing. Steam cleaning saves time since the dirt is dissolved very quickly. Last but not the least, steam cleaning saves money because no cleaning agents are needed. Q: What are the application areas of Steam Cleaners? i Hard floors (wooden, stone, tiles and plastic) i Kitchen (sink, wall tiles, tap) i Bathrooms (shower cabin, toilet bowls, wall tiles, taps) i Radiators i Spot removal i Windows i Kitchen hobs

Advertorial

Q: What is steam cleaning? A: When we use the power of hot steam to clean the substrate from dirt, dust, grease and other materials, the process is known as steam cleaning. As we all know, the boiling point of water is at 100°C at an ambient pressure. Additional energy (heat) makes water evaporate without increasing the temperature and hence water vapor (steam) is gaseous water. This steam is used to clean.

THE BREWHOUSE: NEW ON THE RADAR A brand new addition to the brewery scene in Gurgaon, The Brewhouse at Fortune Select Excalibur on Sohna Road, offers a refreshing assortment of craft beers. With its blazing fuchsia neon sign, it has both indoor and outdoor spaces. The indoor area seems akin to a British sports pub with leather-like couches and dark shades of mahogany. The outer seating area attempts to recreate a beer garden, merged with touches of desi dhaba appeal. Thankfully air conditioned, the outer space is enjoyed best during the day, as sunlight filters through with ease. A good brewery needs to be supplemented

with great finger food, and The Brewhouse does not disappoint. Opt for Popcorns tossed in peri peri, Veggie crudites with Lebneh dip for the health conscious, the cheesy goodness of Creme fraiche potato skins,

and Vegetable spring rolls. Among the fusion meals, do try Wasabi chicken rosti with garlic bread, and the Spicy glass noodles and paneer tikka are sure to leave you stunned. Meal for two: `2,500 approx.

RAMANAGARA, KARNATAKA Known as the Ramgarh of iconic film Sholey, Ramanagara is situated around 50 km from Bengaluru. However, Sholay was not the first film that showcased the earthy appeal of this place. David Lean’s film, A Passage to India put the rough-hewn boulders in the limelight with small door-like grottoes to make them look like caves. A vital hub for rock climbers and trekkers, Ramanagara is one of the most visited places for camping in the country. The place is surrounded with rocks and boulders, lakes and beautiful landscapes which is the major attraction for visitors. Bird watching: Ramanagara is a fantastic weekend destination. Yellow-throated bulbuls and long billed vultures call this area home.

The hilly outcrops is one of very few destinations in South India where long billed vultures nest. With these birds on the very verge of extinction, the government has declared 346.14 hectares to be Ramadevarabetta Vulture Sanctuary in an effort to protect and save the long billed vultures and their natural habitats from complete extinction. Activities to do: Trekking, rappeling, chimney climbing, jumaring (tree climbing), archery, target shooting and outdoor games.

Best time to visit: June to September Remember Don’t take your environs for granted. Since camping is, by and large, pursued outdoors, it is important to not disturb the inhabitants of the area, and their habitats.

The landscape is fascinating, but do keep your eyes on the road.

MAGNIFICENT AGRA Agra is one of the best places to visit around Delhi in monsoon. Carry an umbrella or a raincoat and don’t let the rain dampen your spirit of travel.

The walls are intricately patterned with inlaid semi-precious stones, done so perfectly that it looks like they have been painted on. The gardens are beautiful and opulent. The monument remains open at night for five times a month, on the full moon night and two days before and after that day, except Friday and on month of Ramadan. There are many other attractions like the sprawling Agra Fort, which was once the centre-hold of the Mughal capital; Shah Jahan’s architectural brilliance reflected in the towering

Jama Masjid and Akbar’s ancient city, Fatehpur Sikri, to name a few.

THE SWEET TALE Emperor Shah Jahan is said to have inspired the making of petha, a famous sweet of Agra, during the construction of the Taj. When the 21,000 workers were slaving away for 22 years to create his masterpiece, he heard that they were about to revolt against their daily food - dal-roti. A holy man, Pir Naqshabandi, is believed to have plucked the recipe out of the air while in a trance and suggested this to the Emperor. Since then, the petha was immortalised.

SHOP AND EAT Agra is famous for semi-precious stones, jewellery and handicrafts with inlay marble work. Rugs, carpets and leather goods are other items found aplenty. uring this time of the year you often hear about the benefits of visiting lush and picturesque hill stations, but you rarely hear about the magic of witnessing the cool wave of tranquillity that sweeps over the usually sweltering bustle of a city. What’s more? Most of the sight-seeing doesn’t cost a thing; Mumbai’s world-famous street food is conveniently located at most corners along with options for fine-dining.

WALK IN THE RAIN If it’s drizzling and you fancy a walk across an awe inspiring sea-scape, Marine Drive is the place to be. There’s nothing more relaxing than sipping steaming ‘cutting chai’ while strolling down Marine Drive and a misty fog hangs over a choppy sea. Alternatively, you sip a cocktail and relax at Dome, Intercontinental, an open air lounge that allows one to enjoy the view while being sheltered from the rain. You could also opt to watch Marine Drive transform itself into the ‘Queen’s Necklace’ at night and have a seat while listening to the calming rhythm of the sea. Not to miss: Bandra Bandstand has a magnificent view of the sea. There’s also the ‘walk of stars’ where you can see handprints of various Bollywood celebrities. Margarita With A Straw, which got you a national award, dealt with disability. How was the experience? As an actor, it made me realise the importance of rehearsal and riyaaz. For this movie, I would prepare a lot before arriving at the sets. It was also a reality check. As an individual, it brought a lot of awareness about disability. It’s really frustrating to be at the receiving end because it makes you dependent. Being an artiste known for her unconventional choices, what are the challenges that you face? The biggest challenge is to follow your heart and keep minting money. A lot of projects that I fell in love with are also the ones where people say, ‘oh, paise nahi hain’. Movies consume a great amount of time. It’s difficult to survive when you are investing six months in a project which is not giving

you remuneration. To meet practical ends, I try to strike a balance between my artistic choices and commercial cinema. The other struggle has been the wait to find the right work. Sometimes, you don’t get good opportunities to prove your mettle. So what are the lessons hardships leave behind? Struggle is a part of life. I believe we exist to learn. Once we stop learning, we stop living. As adults, experiences teach us more than formal education. I have been lucky to meet talented people in my career who taught me so much. In theatre, I got to learn from artistes like Rajat Kapoor, Anamika Haksar and Atul Kumar while in films, directors like Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Shonali Bose became my mentors. They exposed me to alternative kind of thinking. As an actor, improvising your skills is important. Most of your films have got an ensemble cast. What convinces you to take them up? I check if my character is essential to the plot. In all the multi-starrers that I have done, my characters have contributed thickly to the plot. For instance, a chunk of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani revolved around my wedding.

Secondly, there should be relatability to the character. In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, my character was quite a brat. Overall, the character might not look impressive at the first glance, but it should have some human aspect to it. How do you interpret stardom vis-à-vis social media? Personally, I owe it to social media because it allowed me to have my independent voice. It has helped me in reaching out to millions of people. I was performing The Printing Machine (a viral poem written by Kalki on women empowerment) at several spots for a year like varsities, auditoriums but it catered to a small amount of audience. When I released it online, it became a rage. I love my Twitter life. On the other hand, it is very addictive too. I was in Arunachal Pradesh and didn’t have network for days. Suddenly, it was a different world, so close to nature, uninterrupted by technology. You have been a staunch believer of women empowerment. What baffles you the most? I have been a tomboy all my life. I could never understand why girls are treated differently with a list of dos and don’ts. The more we keep them inside homes, the more mysterious they become. www.go-getter.in

Your dream role To do a movie where I get my guy in the end. In all the movies, I either kill the man or get myself killed. I would love to do a simple, straight forward love story.

They should be out there doing all kinds of things that a man can do. And same goes for boys. How do you react to criticism? I select criticism. If there is a positive or useful feedback, I take it. But blind criticism on Internet from nameless people cannot be taken seriously. I value criticism from people who know me. What have you learnt about the economics of theatre? It’s tough to sustain yourself in theatre. In the West, theatre shows run for a month or two which gets your production costs as well as some profits. But here, you just do one weekend show and then there’s a break of two months to take it to the next city. This way, it takes much longer to recover the cost of production. So you tend to keep costs very minimal and emphasise on performance of the actors. Would you write a movie script? I enjoy playing with words. My mother saved all my poems since I was six years old. I usually use it as a tool to enhance my performance. But it is tough for me to write a novel or script. I cannot do it every day. It terrifies me. I cannot force it. In fact, I did collaborate with Anurag Kashyap to write That Girl in Yellow Boots. If there comes an idea that really compels me, I will do it.

Carrot semifreddo with poppy seed crumble and white chocolate served in a mason jar. Desserts are no longer attractive looking pastries served on a plate or at best, a mousse set in a plastic container. From full-sized desserts, the transition was made to individual dainty portions and as if their diminutive appeal was not enough, desserts have begun to be served in avante-garde ways, if only to catch the fancy of discerning gourmets. Samantha Nunes, Pastry Chef, Goa Marriott Resort & Spa, agrees, “People eat with their eyes first. So to make the dessert enticing enough, it has to look tempting. Presentation has undergone a change, as desserts have become smaller and more attention is placed on plating. The colour combinations, accompaniments and garnishing are as important as the main dessert itself.

Chefs should keep in mind that the sanctity and knowledge of the base dessert should be true to its name.

DID YOU KNOW?

Thus, while chefs take the plunge when it comes to innovation in presentation, some familiar flavours are kept intact. Chocolate and fruits are still common in desserts, as diners prefer these. Chef Vikas Shrivastava, Pastry Chef, Le Meridien, New Delhi opines, “Today, guests are always waiting for a surprise element, so a chef has to come up with new concepts like fancy plates, mason jars, high ball glasses or shot glasses. These also give a sense of personalised attention. To survive today’s competition, one has to evolve regularly keeping the very essence of desserts intact.” Individual portion desserts are an opportunity for the guest to experience a wider variety of flavours and textures as one cohesive dish without having to

overeat. But adding a fun element to it, only enhances its appeal. Master Chef Ranveer Brar says, “The dessert revolution started in India with mono portions and the reduction in portion sizes of desserts. It gained momentum with light and healthy desserts. Now, we have moved on to the experimenting space, where we are creating and witnessing the creation of inspired masterpieces.” Blueberry-layered cheesecake, salted caramel brownie, banana parfait, apple pies and more, can be served in glass mason jars. But layered desserts look the best in these. In fact no-bake desserts are best, and one can prepare these in advance. Not only do these look attractive and appealing to the

customer, but are very convenient. These jars are easy to handle. A splash of colour adds life to desserts. So, vibrant fruit salads or granitas served in a cocktail glass, look like eye-candy. It also allows diners to keep a check on portion size and try a variety. However, chefs caution that one should not get so lost in the form, that the function involved in eating a dessert is forgotten. Similarly, shot glasses are preferred to serve layered desserts. Brownies, chocolate and whipped cream, is the typical dessert served in these, but variations like Butterscotch pudding may also be offered.

BE CAUTIOUS Practicality is key when serving desserts in extraordinary ways. Guests

QUICK FACTS Don’t add too many components when plating a dessert, as that will mask the flavours one is trying to create.

Dessert trends of the 60s are back and hence crepes and fondues are commonly served.

should find it easy to enjoy the dessert without the fear of spilling it. A slice of layered cake served upright, for instance, maybe wobbly and difficult to manoeuvre. Textures of the dessert must be taken into account when selecting the mode of serving. Chef Ranveer Brar cautions, “Chefs should keep in mind that the sanctity and knowledge of the base dessert, should be true to its name.”

FUSION IS IN Variety prevents flavour fatigue and chefs are going all out to ensure that. So, while presentation offers a huge opportunity to play around, flavours and textures too call for innovation. Molecular gastronomy, according to Chef Nunes, is a regular affair now and modern machinery and techniques help chefs reach that extra mile in innovation and execution. Gelled spheres, replete with flavours that burst in the mouth, are creating a stir. At Zorawar Kalra’s Masala Library, a jalebi is deconstructed into a

Using a distilling process to extract the essences from ingredients, along with liquid nitrogen, and creating a vapour, which hazes towards the diner and gives a teaser of the flavours they can expect from the dessert, is again being used to create drama at the table. Chefs are infusing global flavours into Indian desserts and mithai too. Sweet potato and gulab jamun cheesecake, Pineapple halwa and hazelnut crème tart and Amrakhand cheesecake, are some of the unique offerings from English Vinglish, a newly opened dessert store in Mumbai, by Chef Ranveer Brar, with Gangour Sweets. So while chefs are going all out to give a boost to that last, but important course in a meal, diners have never had it so good. Small portion sizes, attractively filled with delectable flavours and textures. Today, stylish desserts taste as good as they look.

Salted caramel, black sesame, Pandan, red bean, elderflower, are some of the unusual ingredients that have made their way into desserts.

Gond art is a precious expression that has traversed time and place. “The origins of Gond painting can be traced to the digna, a geometric pattern made on the floor and walls of our homes and courtyard, through the year. Within the digna are paintings- such as a pair of birds - that are regarded as auspicious,” says Dilip Shyam, a Gond artist from Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh. “The digna inspired my uncle Jangarh Singh Shyam to create different compositions set within it. He went on to create very striking, colourful and unique compositions, and took Gond art to cities in India and abroad.”

JANGARH SINGH SHYAM: THE GIFTED MENTOR In the early 1980s, J Swaminathan, the Director of Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, sent teams of young painters to different parts of Madhya Pradesh to find local talent. One team leader came across Jangarh’s work of a vivid Hanuman carrying the Sanjivani mountain in his palm, at Patangarh village, Dindori district. The rest as they say is history!

DID YOU KNOW?

Gond art was originally painted on village mud walls using coloured pigments derived from charcoal, soil, plant sap, leaves, and cow dung. Such work is known to last up to 20 years. The basic philosophy of Gond art, is said to be rooted in the belief that ‘viewing a pretty image brings good luck’. Thus, most tribal homes are decorated with traditional artwork.

The representation of traditional themes in modern media has led to new interpretations and access to new audiences.

Swaminathan encouraged him to paint in his own style. Jangarh painted myths and legends of the Gond community that his ancestors had sung for generations - in his signature style, on paper and canvas! He filled the compositions with dots, dashes and patterns; this expression went on to establish his style and set the foundation for a Gond idiom of painting. The change of medium (from walls to paper and canvas, and natural colours and mud to ink and acrylic paint) freed the art and artists from being restricted to a particular physical space as work could now be easily transported for the world to experience their beauty. And in this way, Jangarh inspired a generation of Gond artists to find their own expression.

The figures are filled in with bright colours (except the pen and ink drawings) and embellished with dots, dashes, V-shaped lines, straight lines, semi-circles akin fish scales, small circles, and other patterns; these fillers identify the artist of a particular work. Gond artists are admirable for their senses enable them to express things skillfully and wondrously through the vocabulary of their unique visual language of motifs and compositions. “In recent years, several Gond artists have become involved in adapting their visual depictions for new media, including both book illustrations and animated films. The representation of traditional themes in modern media has led to new interpretations and access to new audiences that has brought recognition and income to an expanding group of artists. In this way, contemporary Gond art stands out from many other folk art forms,” says Tara Douglas, animator and Secretary, Adivasi Arts Trust, an organisation that promotes awareness of Indian tribal culture. These expressions for new media along with traditionalstyle paintings speak of the creativity, versatility and potential of the Gond artists and their unique art.

PAINTING FABLES

The peacock is spectacular yet his feet are not, as they were stolen by the lapwing causing him much distress; this conveys one has to keep one’s vanity in check.

A mahua tree is depicted with a parrot, tiger and boar; it conveys that if a person drinks too much of the intoxicating juice of the ripe mahua fruit he first babbles like a parrot, then becomes aggressive like a tiger and then rolls in the dirt like a boar, so one should keep one’s desires in check.

An elephant is shown with wings to convey how the animal originally enjoyed the power of flying, yet because of being defiant, its wings were clipped and given to other creatures; the story is a reminder to be thoughtful and wellbehaved.

the new world order A new world order seems to be under way, dominated by disruptive forces changing the way businesses across every sector is rapidly growing in almost every few years. Vivek Sethi

he global economy has become more demanding as the world of commerce changes randomly. These disruptive changes have such immense power that by 2030, emerging markets like India and China may well be home to more large companies than either the United States or Europe, although at the start of this century, most of the Fortune Global 500—the world’s largest international companies were fundamentally headquartered in developed economies. Seemingly the hallmarks of the 21st century will be these disruptive business forces shaping up a densely interconnected global economy. Unfortunately, most business houses fear the speed of change! Rightly so, a recent book from McKinsey Global Institute, titled No Ordinary Disruption: The Four Forces Breaking All the Trends brings to fore a timely and important analysis of how businesses around the world need to reset their intuition

M I X E D

B A G

as a result of four forces colliding and transforming the global economy, namely: the rise of emerging markets; the accelerating impact of technology on the natural forces of market competition; an aging world population, and accelerating flows of trade, capital, people, and data.

STRIKING THE BALANCE There is an urgent imperative to adjust to these new realities. While it is full of opportunities, this era is deeply unsettling. And there is a great deal of work to be done. Never in the history of human civilisation did one witness a global auto major thinking of product lines that will find acceptance across the globe, internet majors strive to serve world population, and telecom majors design products keeping in mind the developed world and emerging markets alike. Today, the world acknowledges India’s growing presence in the global market and being one of the resilient emerging economies - India has these disruptive forces in full bloom. “Some believe India has arrived, some say it’s arriving, whereas some naysayers presume that India might just have missed its opportunity. Some critics say that while Indians do very well all over the world in all the different walks of life, somehow India is left behind. But, there are inherent strengths that made Aristotle call it the seat of the civilisation of the world,” describes Sunil Kant Munjal, Joint Managing Director, Hero Motor Corp and Chairman, Hero Corporate Services, aptly defining the rise of India. Focussing on the India experience, these disruptive forces had already reshaped every bit of the business landscape. The results had led to deployment of state-of-the-art technology, energy efficiency, enhanced consumer focus, smarter choices and stricter compliances. On catching up with the developed world, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Government of India has an interesting analogy. According to him, India was way behind the rest of the world when telecom revolution

There is an urgent imperative to adjust to new realities. started. It still was decades behind in terms of roll out of 2G. India even missed in case of the roll out of 3G by a few years. But, now in the 4G and beyond era, India is going to leap forth with the world’s best economies. “India is changing and evolving for good every second. Our Prime Minister has envisioned the dream to bring governance to every citizen of India. The government is connecting 2.5 lakh gram panchayats with optical fibre and soon, India will be home to 500 mn smartphones,” the Minister shares, as India works on its tech-led development aspirations.

CONSUMER IS KING The super enhanced consumer focus has helped businesses to be able to mine its consumer needs in such a manner that are able to meet end-to-end consumer needs. For instance, by unbundling its services, the airlines are better equipped to serve

its consumers better and make additional revenues for businesses. At the same time, premium airline services are also finding suitable environment to grow as India hopes to turnaround as one of biggest aviation market by 2025. Likewise, in the power sector, in line with rising environmental concerns, the conventional players are inculcating best practices to reduce harm to environment, while new league of determined entities are eyeing to gain through the new found focus on green and eco-friendly technologies in the alternate energy segment. This sector could generate a million jobs by 2022, if the government reaches its goal of 100 giga watts (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy and 60 GW of wind energy. The jury is out and the clear result in a business regime dominated by disruptive business forces is the end of static business model. Be it the Telecom, Hospitality, Automobile, Healthcare, or Power businesses will have to go through a sea of changes due to rapid disruptive forces and yet manage to grow with an innovative edge to create that magical margin and economies of scale.

And to those who are already successful it will bring sustainability, positive reinforcements, further success and introduce to a new and higher perspective and lifestyle.”

Advertorial

The Journey to my methods “I am someone who has evolved, and with every step of my life have just tried to be better in what I love, I don't just predict your future, I communicate, consult and help you empower your energies.” Every person is having an energy, a combination and each combination is different, hence they have only certain types of energy and lack other ones. This is what makes us human, that we can’t be perfect but we have to strive to be. My exclusive research and study of missing numbers in your birth graph helps me to determine what are the strong energies that I can see in you and uplift the missing energies to suit to your dreams and ambitions. With my years or research and extremely positive results, I help these missing energies in your graph. Its like improveme providing nutrition to a body, by way of simple remedies and self improvement tools that I have developed by myself. The curious case of 4 & 8 “In my research, nearly 70% people are connected to these numbers, and this loop then influences your further generations too.’ One usually guards themselves because we have all heard a lot about disappointments and delays, sorrows and hardships of 4 & 8 and with 7 they form a trio of these energies. But I see them powerful steroids, to be handled carefully. Then I will channelize it to positive planning and maximise your fortune’s profits. Feel blessed if you belong to them, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did. Handle your energies well, because only in the right hands they will empower with 4 & 8.

Spotlight: Love, relations and universal energies Love between you and family or friends, is a bond beyond any calculations. But that does not mean, a relationship isn't stressed by ongoing. There are times we connect very well with our family, and then for certain issues there comes a stressful period. Knowing and understanding on your numbers connect with your loved ones, will help you understand why you are facing what you are facing in that relationship. I have saved marriages by making partners understand each other and their numbers, saved families from getting split, helped children to love their parents pare in an older age.

Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and detangle the web, to create a free path for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. My advice “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. Knowledge about finances, career, turnaround years, lucky dates, months, years, things that help you have a strong backup plan for everything in life. “No mantra, fasting, name changes singularly guarantees you anything. Ultimately its you who has to foresee the future, and I help you to do so.” Follow a simplistic solution Meh that I call Sandhiya Mehhta’s remedy system, and we will work on your energies and align them in the right direction The Success road ahead There is a Buddhist saying, “You yourself must strive; the Buddha’s just point the way.” f you believe in yourself and the universe let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no desired time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, ever-glorious and a good part of our society & I continue to achieve results with all my clients."- Sandhiya Mehhta.

Gender diversity in the boardroom That the glass ceiling exists for women globally is indubitable. This glaring barrier becomes more apparent when considering the fact that Hillary Clinton Mamta Binani is the first woman in the US President, ICSI presidential race history to clinch the nomination of a major US political party. In an overwhelmingly patriarchal society, the scenario can well be imagined. Albeit to a lesser degree, the same story plays out in Indian boardrooms, despite India Inc., possessing a more progressive mindset. Recognising this unsavoury fact, the Government introduced the Companies Act, 2013, which made gender diversity in the boardroom mandatory. Section 149 (1) of the Act provides that certain classes of companies must have at least one female director. The rules framed under Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules, 2014, provide that at least one woman director should be appointed in: 1. Every company listed on stock exchanges

2. Every other public company having: Paid-up share capital of `100 crore or more; or turnover of `300 crore or more.

MANDATORY MEMBERSHIP Since implementation was expected to happen in a phased manner, market regulator SEBI revised its listing guidelines in 2015. Rule No. 17 of the guidelines refers to the composition of the Board of Directors of a listed entity: 1. Board of Directors shall have an optimum combination of executive and non-executive directors with at least one woman director and not less than 50% of Board of Directors shall comprise non-executive directors; 2. Where the chairperson of the Board of

Directors is a non-executive director, at least one-third of the Board of Directors shall comprise independent directors, and where the listed entity does not have a regular non-executive chairperson, at least half of the Board of Directors shall comprise independent directors: Provided that where the regular nonexecutive chairperson is a promoter of the listed entity or is related to any promoter or person occupying management positions at the level of Board of Director or at one level below the Board of Directors, at least half of the Board of Directors of the listed entity shall consist of independent directors.

ADVANTAGES OF DIVERSITY It’s surprising the glass ceiling still exists given evidence that gender diversity augments a company’s talent pipeline, boosts financial performance and innovation and also improves group performance. Research also emphasises the link between diversity and corporate social responsibility, given that women are inclined towards being more compassionate and empathetic.

G. L. Bajaj Institute hits 96% placement record G. L. Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management (Greater Noida) recently broke its own record of highest placements, and successfully placed around 96% students of Batch 2016 within the second round of placement drives (till April 2016). According to placement officer Prof. Manju Khatri, 103 companies visited the campus for the placement drive that included TCS, HCL Technologies, Fiserv, IGATE-Capgemini, Accenture, DELL, RANE Group, NIIT Technologies, Sterling & Wilson Ltd, etc. This year, the institute bagged around 1,010 offers and the students found opportunities in sectors ranging from IT to management and core companies. According to Pankaj Agarwal, Vice Chairman of the Institute, one of the reasons for the institute’s success in placement is that it believes in extensive industrial training to the students. The institute has joined hands with many industrial moguls like TCS, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Microsoft, CISCO, etc., to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Partnerships with these and other behemoths, such as Aricent, Barclays, NASSCOM, Minda Silica, Rane, Tata Technologies and APS, Germany (for advanced robotics training), etc., complement the regular courses. At G.L. Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, students are trained in accordance to industry requirements. Focus areas not only include technical skills, analytical skills, soft skills, life skills and etiquette, but also time management, team work, and project management, etc. This process is initiated in the early semesters of the core programmes, thus amalgamating it with the standard curricula. G. L. Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, Greater Noida, has introduced a new and innovative approach to job placement - one that relies heavily on proactive employer outreach and training students to start their own ventures, so that they can even create jobs for others.
