How should one help a child feel enthusiastic about learning new things and not let curiosity fizzle?

If you observe the habits of successful people from many fields, they often recommend embracing continuous learning. Many families tend to restrict learning to the school environment, and only a slight emphasis is placed on the child's interests. It is important not to suppress a child's curiosity. Instead, be patient and provide answers to their questions. If you're unsure, take the initiative to read, learn, and share knowledge. Learning

something new, be it a language, art, or general knowledge, should be a regular habit. The mastery of new skills brings children delight and boosting their confidence.

What kind of habits should a child develop to face and conquer challenges?

Healthy lifestyle habits are important not only for adults but also for children. As the burden of academics mounts, many children cut down

on physical activity. How often do teenagers engage in running or physical games? Engaging in physical activities stimulates brain function, making it crucial to encourage them to develop this habit. Additionally, children should be encouraged to solve puzzles and play board games to sharpen their thinking skills.

What is the habit that keeps anyone going and achieving their goals? Make it a priority to value your time and avoid procrastination. Procrastination is a widespread habit that should be consciously avoided. Completing tasks within set deadlines brings immense satisfaction and accelerates the momentum for the next steps. It is important to ensure that childrenconsistently do their homework, complete each term's curriculum, and plan their days in advance to avoid confusion.

It is common for children to express dissatisfaction with their tasks. How should we teach the idea of enjoying every bit of academic work?

First and foremost, identify the underlying reasons. Have a conversation with your children to determine if they find the subject challenging or they lack interest. No academic topic is inherently dull. All curricula are designed with the purpose of imparting knowledge. There are many ways to facilitate learning, and it's important to communicate with teachers to bridge any gaps. Consistency is the key. By encouraging our children to maintain a consistent effort in their learning, we can ensure that they find enjoyment in every moment of their academic journey.

We live and work in a wonderful, rich and diverse nation. Every 6E person is responsible for creating our inclusive, winning culture. Some of the measures we have taken for our differently-abled employees, include that we ensure infrastructure accessibility for wheelchair and mobility aid users. Our offices are accessible to all users, including the differently abled, so they can gain access to our facility and exit from them. We carefully take into consideration issues like the steepness of slopes/ ramp, the height of buzzers, access to seating, the distance of parking from the destination, stairs with markings and rest rooms. For colleagues with speech and hearing impairment disability (SHI) we have on-boarded Indian Sign Language interpreters. Interpretation support is available to hearingimpaired colleagues at recruitment till the life cycle stage to ensure hassle-free communication. Interpreters are available at all company events and townhalls as well. This culture helps to make us a company of choice for our colleagues and customers alike. This is also the reason why IndiGo has been rated a ‘Great Place to Work’ many times.

This year, there has been significant progress in our support for the LGBTQ+ community, within our workforce and among our customers. We are committed to protect the rights of our LGBTQ+ fellow colleagues and want each of them to feel comfortable and safe, being who they are. In this Pride month, we aim to highlight the symbolism behind Pride and share the history of the Rainbow Flag (Pride Flag). This is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion. As we celebrate Pride Month this year, we embrace the spirit of all Pride movements wholeheartedly.

By listening to the stories of our own employees and LGBTQ+ individuals around the world, we have gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges they face when living within the constraints of social expectations and convention. We recognise that moving beyond these constraints is incredibly daunting and increasingly difficult. To provide a supportive environment for our LGBTQ+ employees, we have already established the "6E SAFE SPACE", an employee resource group. Additionally, we have introduced gender-neutral rest rooms at many locations and have plans to establish more. Through our internal broadcast portal, employees have quick access to enroll in our resource groups. The presence of LGBTQ+ colleagues during the CEO's townhall this year has inspired many employees still in the closet to join the 6E SAFE SPACE groups.

A policy framework with all aspects of employment is in place - be it recruitment, training, working conditions, salaries, transfers and career advancement. We have collaborated with institutions across India to galvanise the LGBTQ+ talent pool for our IndiGo Pride initiative. To equip our employees with the necessary knowledge and understanding, we conduct a range of workshops across various locations. These workshops address challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and some of our programmes include master classes for DEI Champs and anti-bias campaigns. By adopting an ‘online’ approach, we ensure that all employees have convenient access to learn, understand and appreciate the different aspects of DEI from anywhere.

At IndiGo, our firm belief is that diversity, equity, and inclusion are far beyond buzzwords. They are fundamental values that shape our organisation. I am truly grateful for the talent and contributions of all our 6E people who come from varied backgrounds. F rom offbeat experiences and inclusive hotels to a gender-neutral local community, here's what can make travel even more enjoyable for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The pink dollar (the economic affluence of the LGBTQ+ community) makes for a large demographic spend and its power is only on the rise. Its influence is being seen in every sector, including travel. In 2022, Paris was voted as the best city in the world to celebrate the Pride Month (June), followed by Berlin, Stockholm, New York, Madrid and London. In India, the most favoured cities by the LGBTQ+ community are Mumbai, Goa, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata. But what makes these destinations so popular? Travellers and prominent members from the community say that some countries, cities and even hotels are more inviting and inclusive than others. “For me, a good travel experience is about choosing the right destination, or opting to be a part of a group of like-minded people and selecting places that are LGBTQ+ friendly,” says Zubair Sher Singh Kalsia, manager, content, influencer and advocacy at Diageo India, an HIV advocate and an inveterate traveller.

Travellers from the community say in India, some cities are extremely inclusive, while others, partly so. “I love Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi,” says Kalsia, adding, “In Goa and Kerala, certain areas are very accepting. You have to test the waters in different states. In India, I usually travel with friends or a partner. I have explored offbeat and inclusive homestays with a Bengaluru-based tour group called Out and About. But there are not many of these.”

Among foreigners travelling to India, Rajasthan is not just popular but inclusive as well. “Rajasthan is the most popular among foreign tourists,” says Rajat Singla, owner of Delhi-based travel company Pink Vibgyor, that specialises in trips for LGBTQ+ members. Singla adds many travellers prefer staying in boutique heritage hotels and want to experience local traditions.

In recent times, Pune has also gained favour for its inclusiveness.

North Goa is popular for spaces where there is no discrimination.

Many like Rajasthan, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.

W here to stay

Many LGBTQ+ travellers from India prefer an established hotel chain for their stay. “In metros, I would prefer an international group of hotels where there’s no discrimination. For most of these brands, being hospitable means being inclusive. They treat you as a client – whatever be your gender identity,” says Pranay Baidya, a fashion designer and an obsessive traveller, adding, “In India, the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group has inclusivity as its brand mandate but none of the others have expressed that.” Agrees Kalsia, “The Lalit welcomes all and in Delhi, its club Kitty Su is very popular. The group is open to LGBTQ+ people and employs trans and the differently abled as well.” Baidya explains, “But it's not always a hotel's policies that matter. Inclusivity is a humane obligation.”

Boutique hotels like Suryagarh in Jaisalmer and Mary Budden Estate in Binsar are favoured as “they are creating genuine loyalty for LGBTQ customers,” says Baidya.

Narendra Bhawan in Bikaner and the Aramness in Gir are preferred as well.

But India is fast becoming more inclusive. Singla recalls how till about a decade ago, people would laugh at the concept of an LGBTQ-special travel agency and even hoteliers were uncomfortable. “Today, everyone is taking this genre seriously,” Singla says. Explains Keshav Suri, executive director, the Lalit Group, and the India head of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Foundation, "I am confident we will be able to create more safe spaces in India for all travellers. The growth story of India is only starting and the power of pink money can be a strong contributor to the GDP.”

Among international destinations too, a few are preferred over others. “I love Sidney; it’s such an easy place. You can go to Bondi Beach and just be yourself – you don’t have to hide your gender identity. In Paris, my partner and I went about doing our own thing. We found accommodation with Mister b&b, an inclusive property run by gay men. There are similar places for queer women too. I like Madrid, which is extremely popular among LGBTQ+ travellers, and even Bangkok,” says Baidya, explaining, “When we travel, we don't just spend time with other LGBTQ+ people. We explore festivals, art shows and enjoy shopping trips. We want to travel to a destination that is fun, inclusive, safe and offers good value for money!”

But there are some countries that are often avoided. “There are some countries that are not welcoming to our community. I would like to avoid them,” says Kalsia. Baidya, too, finds certain countries unsafe: “I usually travel alone and safety is most important." Most seasoned LGBTQ+ travellers advise checking a country's laws and talking to local residents before planning a trip.

Experts say it's important to educate guides, drivers, guards, janitors and everyone associated with the travel industry about the LGBTQ+ community.

With the growth of the industry, information and education is spreading. While hotels are educating their staff, it's important to sensitise everyone involved, even local artisans and residents who interact with travellers. “Our international guests love rural trips. They prefer offbeat experiences like turban and saree tying, kushti (wrestling) and cultural performances, especially in Rajasthan. And during these activities, they interact with local villagers. Thus, it's crucial that residents also realise the importance of welcoming all,” says Singla. “We have a team of educated drivers and guides, and we select good hotels, keeping in mind special treats for our LGBTQ+ guests,” says Rajendra Sharma, owner of Jaipur-based travel company Gay Tours India. Sharma says they are always mindful that guests return home with the best memories. “We hosted a group of ladies from the LGBTQ community from South Africa, the US and Europe, and it was a roaring success,” Sharma adds.

Singla says a lot of work is being done to educate industry stakeholders.

“As a representative of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), we work to include more travel organisers on our platform where they can communicate with other operators and make more business opportunities," Singla adds. Agrees IGLTA president/CEO John Tanzella, “India is a major destination for international tourism, with great potential to grow the inbound and outbound network to benefit LGBTQ+ travellers and LGBTQ+-welcoming businesses. The India initiative is key for us.”

Deep Breathing

Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth slowly while sitting comfortably. Can relax the body and mind.

Spinal Twist

Twist torso to one side while seated, resting your opposite hand on the outside of your thigh. Hold the twist for a few breaths. Switch sides. Can relieve back strain.

Forward Fold

World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, reminds us once again of the urgent need to protect Mother Nature. Here's a peep into the Sundarbans, one of the world's most unique biodiversity hubs.

The Sundarbans, a vast forest in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal, as viewed from space! The Sundarbans is among the world's largest deltaic regions and encompasses numerous islands along with rivers, creeks, swamps, estuaries, mud flats and tidal flats. The nearest airport from the Sundarban Tiger Reserve is in Kolkata.

For people residing in and around the Sundarbans, life is about the forest and the water. Fishing, crab collection, honey collection and tourism are the main sources of income here.

Mudskippers are amphibious fish and are an integral part of the habitat of the Sundarbans. They live in swamps and estuaries and on mud flats, and are noted for their ability to climb, walk and skip about out of water.

Unique looking, pneumatophores are specialised root structures that grow out from the water surface and facilitate the aeration necessary for root respiration in hydrophytic trees, including many mangrove species. Here, pneumatophores of the Sundarbans' mangrove forest bed.

A common sight in coastal brackish mangroves and river deltas of the Sundarbans, the saltwater crocodile is one of the important species and the apex predator of an estuarine ecosystem. Often, these reptiles are seen on mudflats basking in the sun!

A common saying in the Sudarbans is that even if you do not spot a tiger, the tiger keeps an eye on every visitor in its territory! While that may or may not be true, the royal Bengal tiger is one of the most popular attractions here.

“Socha tha, kisan ka beta hoon, kisaan hi banunga. But my parents dreamt otherwise, ‘Humara beta bada sarkari officer banega!’ They moved us to Kanpur from our village for better education.

There, Papa started working as a laborer and Mummy took up odd jobs like candle making and stitching to get by… But a few years in, Papa lost his job. It was a difficult time — we didn’t even know where our next meal would come from. We started helping Mummy then — we made candles, garlands, and sold chai in melas. We pulled through.

While Papa found a new job, I had a new dream — I wanted to do something big for my family. I put my all into studies and after my graduation, I began preparing for the SSC CGL exam.

It took over 3 years, 2 failed attempts, and countless sleepless nights. But I got selected. We were all huddled in front of my laptop screen, waiting for my results. When we found out that I was selected, Mummy couldn’t stop crying. And Nani proudly started calling up the whole

family. It felt like a dream.

After I joined the Ministry of Defense, our life changed. I started spoiling my parents with every happiness. This year, I surprised Mummy and Papa with a car on their anniversary and moved our family of 8 to a new, bigger house.

And last year, we took our first flight together to Nainital. While planning a vacation, it struck me, ‘Iss baar plane me jayenge!’ I surprised everyone with tickets and they couldn’t contain themselves — my parents were bursting with childlike excitement. And once on the plane, Mummy tightly clutched onto my hand, scared and excited. Nothing could describe the moment when we saw the clouds for the first time. Mummy said, ‘The clouds looked like cotton balls.’ We were in heaven.

And Papa kept saying, ‘Mera beta bada aadmi ban gaya!’ But the truth is, I’m just getting started. It’s my dream now to fill their lives with all the happiness they deserve… and more. After all, it was their dream that taught me to dream, it was their dream that has brought me so far!”

C hasing tuskers for years, film producer Guneet Monga

The Academy Award winning producer of the delightful documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, has never had to chase interesting stories. In fact, Monga humbly admits how tales have always found their way to her - stories, which are intrinsically Indian in spirit, yet so global, that they have been hailed across the world.

Monga’s propensity to gravitate towards such attractive and tangible human tales has always stood her in good stead. It has provoked her to sift through the ordinary while retaining in her work, a certain quintessential Indianness that has the capacity to initiate both introspection and engaging dialogues between the presenter and the viewer.

For instance, when she heard the story director Yashowardhan Mishra wanted to tell through Kathal (Monga’s upcoming production for Netflix), she thought it was a smartly-written satirical fiction on the police force. But on further probe, it appeared that the incident the movie would talk about has happened in real life. “Isn’t that amazing? We don’t even have to conjure up incidents. India is a cauldron of tales that tick,” says Monga, who continuously derives motivation for her work from the vastness of India's diversity! It was one such beautifullyindigenous culture of coexistence of man with his surroundings that Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment presented before the world through The Elephant Whisperers

One probably won't be able to watch the award-winning documentary without smiling and tearing up. It’s about elephants (more precisely, Raghu and Ammu) and man (a couple, Bomman and Bellie) being in complete harmony with nature. But much of the narrative is about loss, love and hope. The delightful Tamil documentary shot by Kartiki Gonsalves, real time over a period of four to five years, will warm the cockles of your heart and teach you exactly why we must be indebted to those who have been taking care (and continue to do so) of our forests and its wild inhabitants.

A broken human and a broken elephant come together and through the magic of the purest kind of love, they heal each other. This is what makes the story of The Elephant Whisperers so moving, inspiring and uplifting. It also connects to the Hindu philosophy of worshipping nature, which surfaces where Bellie explains how the forest is like a god to the locals and why they don’t wear shoes while walking on the grass as a mark of respect. Bomman is a mahout as well as a priest and the distinction between his work as an elephant caregiver and a priest is smudged the moment he envisages the divine in the baby animals he looks after.

“We captured Bomman and Bellie getting married in the documentary. It was a beautiful and fulfilling moment. But more significantly, these two humans were bonding over a period and taking care of each other. This sense of heartfelt

brought the Oscar home with The Elephant Whisperers, a heart-warming story from India's rural hinterland. But this is not a one-off miracle. Monga feels the world is connecting to our stories like never before.

“Learn the good things from the brilliant movie makers of the world and employ them to tell the stories from here. That’s a combination that will never fail. India is a prolifically growing nation with wonders happening everywhere. It is time the world wakes up to our stories,” she concludes.

“As storytellers, we often forget that India has beauty of traditions and culture in its every nook and cranny. Look at the food, the clothes, the colours, the dances, the people… everything. Spiritually, there is so much to gain succor from in this great country of ours,” elaborates Monga, a quintessential Delhi girl, who chose a gorgeous Banarasi silk saree for the Oscars night. “I am a saree person and what else would I wear at that podium if not the traditional attire of India! And what a choice it was, right? We went up to the stage dressed in everything gloriously Indian in heritage and spirit!”
