Valentine's Day
Celebrating Love Named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome during 3rd Century, Valentine's Day is a celebration of love, friendship and admiration. According to one of the legends, when marriages were outlawed for young men by the then Emperor Claudius II, realising the injustice, Saint Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers secretly. The saint, literally played cupid in the life of many lovers.
“Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. Oscar Wilde

Based on the theme of a hit Korean TV show called, ‘W – Two Worlds’, the monochrome design of this eatery creates a 2D optical illusion which makes you feel as if you are inside a cartoon strip illustration. Everything here, right from the walls to floors, from furniture to doors, and even the cutleries, stick to the black and white colour theme. The walls also have illusionary windows with 3D effect and comic strips plastered on them.

The verdant drop-shaped island country of Sri Lanka - known as 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean' charms the travellers from past and the present. The natural wealth of forests, animal and bird life; scenic vistas of mountains, plains, beaches and ocean; man-made heritage of ancient monuments; beautiful gemstones sourced from the earth; a spectrum of traditional crafts and art; the gentle people and pace of life offer a wonderful bouquet of experience to visitors. Bringing colour to the lush landscape is the traditional colourful attire of Sri Lankans and its crafts. Of the latter, handcrafted masks present a tryst with the country’s traditional beliefs, rituals and living craft skills.

Stores often have a wall spangled with colourful wooden masks of different sizes, and guided tours often include a visit to a showroom that has masks and a tour of a mask making workshop (if possible) where visitors are explained the technique of handcrafting masks and the symbolism of different masks. Then the artisan or store staff will hold a large colourful mask and deftly remove its side sections thus demonstrating that the mask can be easily dismantled, packed and carried. And all these elements make easy to surrender to the impulse of picking up a mask or two as an auspicious and precious memento of a visit to the country!
An Ancient Tradition The origins of masks in Sri Lanka are traced to ancient times, when they were crafted to represent gods, spirits, humans, animals, demons and other beings. They are believed to have the power to connect with the powers beyond, overcome evil spirits, offer protection, bestow blessings and bring in other positive happenings. In sync with this belief, masks were worn during rituals including healing rituals; folk performances that enacted ancient legends; and festivals and processions. For centuries elaborate masks have been worn for dance, traditionally performed for rituals, healing and dance-dramas, and today are often presented as a cultural experience for visitors. Traditionally, masks were specially used for healing rituals as it was believed that sicknesses were caused by demons.

The garuda mask bestows prosperity, peace and love.
During a healing ritual performed for a specific ailment (such as stomach pain, headache or cough), the healer summons the demon causing that particular problem (who appears in the form of a person wearing the particular mask associated with the demon), makes offerings to the demon and request for the patient to be freed from the ailment. Spread over 700 acres of land, exploring the Chittorgarh fort complex is likely to consume your entire day, but time will snap by soaking in myriad stories of the myths and legends associated with this place. The Rajputs were great patrons of the art, so expect to find poetry in stone and splendid architecture influenced by the Hindus, Jains and Mughals. As you enter Chittor town, a road leads from the Aravalli foothills to the summit of Chittorgarh Fort passing
through seven gates or pols that were built according to Hindu Vastu. There was a time when up to 70,000 people lived inside the fort complex. Today, however, only a fraction of that number resides, and new constructions have been prohibited. The 15th century Kumbhashyam temple commissioned by Rana Kumbha in 1449 is your first stop inside the fort. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, and the inside walls are covered with panels depicting stories from Krishna’s life. Right besides the temple, there’s a

small shrine dedicated to queen poetess Mirabai. A Rajput princess, who married in the powerful Mewar royal family, she is believed to have lived in Chittorgarh for a brief time before moving to Dwarka to dedicate her entire life to Lord Krishna.
Rani Padmini’s Palace
The palace is a major crowd puller due to the legend that surrounds the queen. Tour guides narrate her tales with an animated enthusiasm. Built in the middle of a lotus pond, the Rani Padmini palace is an 18th century reconstruction of the original. Nonetheless, one is quick to imagine the beauty of this place back in its day, surrounded by clear waters and beautiful lawns. Rani Padmini’s Palace is inaccessible and can be viewed from the main palace.
The Vijaystambha
Also called the Victory Tower, it is a majestic structure built in 1440 by Rana Kumbha to commemorate the victory over Mahmud Khilji. Standing tall at 122 feet, it boasts of some exquisite carvings, both on the exteriors and interiors of the tower. A narrow spiralled stairway allows visitors to reach the top where you're rewarded with a bird's eye view of the beautiful complex. The Kirti

Far smaller in scale at 72 feet, but an equally captivating sight with intricately carved sculptures of the Dighambaras adorning all sides of the tower. One of the newer constructions inside the heritage complex, the 19th century Fateh Singh Palace, has been converted into a Government museum where visitors can view restored artefacts, Rajputana clothing, armour and paintings. (Timing: 10am to 5pm) Don't forget to drop by the Rana Kumbha Palace, easily one of the biggest structural sites inside Chittorgarh. The crumbling ruins give away the grandeur of this once beautiful palace where the kings and queens resided. Stay back to watch the sunset from here, overlooking Chittorgarh town - a fitting end to your visit.

Staged every two years, the Singapore Airshow is Asia’s largest and most influential international aviation and defence exhibition. Open for trade on February 11-14, 2020 and to the public on February 15-16, 2020 visitors can look forward to a wide range of activities this year, which includes static display of aircraft and aerobatic flying displays. “Aside from curating expert views and essential conversations in the aviation industry today, the event will also be a cornerstone where audiences can converge ideas, create exciting new businesses opportunities and connect through strategic partnerships,” said Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia Events, organiser of Singapore Airshow. Focus on sustainability Sustainability was the buzzword of 2019, and the trend has extended into the new year too. For the first time in its 12-year history, the Singapore Airshow 2020 will be fully solar-powered. To be held at Experia Events' Changi Exhibition Centre, the show will be powered by over 15,000 solar panels capable of producing 7,840 megawatt hours (Mwh) of power annually. “With a growing concern for the environment, we readily embraced the idea of an alternative energy source for the running of our business operations; especially for a mega-complex such as the Changi Exhibition Centre,” adds Leck Chet Lam. The organisers are expecting more than 65 of the top 100 aerospace and defence companies, over 1,000 companies from some 50 countries, and an excess of 55,000 trade attendees from over 150 countries.

has given a new dimension to the reading experiences of the young, old and ageless over the last sixty years. The 85-year-old author loves recalling his idyllic childhood days and recounting, and reliving those growing up years, getting inspired by people, nature, birds and trees, and sometimes ghosts, to ‘scribble away’ hundreds of stories, books, essays, and poems that have been the reading companions of millions of people over the years. Landour, Mussoorie is the place where he lives with his adopted family of Rakesh and Beena, who have been looking after him, and making it possible for him to eat, sip tea, soak in the sun, sleep, read and keep writing, two hours daily. “Some of these daily writings make it to a book, while a few others are saved for another book, another day,” he says. Much like a fox (pun intended), he is agile, friendly and curious with an engaging personality, can handle cold better (no wonder he loves to live high up in the hills), gregarious, choosing subtlety and let his writings exhibit the flamboyance and like a fox, he is not a pack animal. “Wolves moves in packs, I am more of a fox who is happy to be on its own, and who spends a lot of time scribbling away,” he laughs. "Nature has inspired me to a large extent. I am lucky that I have lived in the mountains and I am still tucked in here. It doesn’t have as much pollution as big cities. For dialogue, I depend more on the crickets, cicadas and grasshoppers who keep up a regular exchange, debating the issues of the day. But for reflective and descriptive writing, I look into the distance, at the purple hills merging with an azure sky; or I examine a falling leaf as it spirals down from the tree and settles on my typewriter keys, he shares philosophically.

There are times when some fans show up to my place without a warning and if I am sleeping at that time, this makes me really 'grumpy'. If I know someone is coming then I am happy to meet them.

Green Intentions
Getting Re-plugged to
Nature From slow fashion to zero-wastage cooking, from kitchen garden to lesser carbon footprint travelling, ‘repurposing hacks’ of our parents and grandparents are now key to ‘sustainable and green’ living. Words Madhulika Dash 84
February 2020
If you are in your forties, it is likely that you have spent a good part of your early life, green. Yes, the time when fashion was about 'hand me down' clothes – unless it was your birthday – food meant you had to eat seasonal, and had to have everything from root to fruit; preserving for summers was an vigorous activity; kitchens had garden, and the car, much like the radio and the TV in the house, would be driven for ten years at the least before being changed for something new. Exchange was one of the best offers in town – and repurposing (covering text books with newspaper) was considered one of the survival skills. How effective and important are our parents' (and grandparents) thinking of 'fixing the broken’ was emphasised at the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards when actor Joaquin Phoenix announced the intention of wearing his Stella McCartney Tuxedo to all the Hollywood awards this season. Interestingly, McCartney isn’t the only famous name to advocate Slow Fashion, tech wizard and Apple founder, Steve Jobs too followed a similar example when he decided to sport a polo neck and jeans and described it as a stress-free way of living.
Sustainability is a concept that was all too familiar to our parents (and grandparents) who have lived by the ethos of ‘sow today, what you want tomorrow'.
A Greenpeace study done a while ago, in fact, stated that globally people shopped for 60 per cent more clothes than required, out of which many do not see the light of the day for nearly 15 years. The situation is true for most aspect of our lives today: be it electronics, cars and even food. At the 2019 Food Symposium, experts rued not only on the rise of High Fat High Salt consumption among fast foods, but also the fact that a major pie of our food purchases these days were ultraprocessed food that causes more craving and weight gain.
The outcome was a resurfacing of sustainability – a concept that was all too familiar to our parents (and grandparents) who have lived by the ethos of ‘sow today, what you want tomorrow'. Fascinatingly one of the earliest advocators of ‘sustainable living’ was millionaire Warren Buffet, who has lived in that very house that he purchased first. When asked about it, the entrepreneur said, “its all I need.” Speed star Keanu Reeves is another supporter of the thought. While the last few years have seen such examples, the fact remains that in the age of instant convenience, going green does face major hurdles – after all, throwing away all those electronic items one fine morning is just going to add to the e-junk – so here’s a few suggestions out of the old logbook: Cook Stepwise, and Traditional: The brilliance of Indian cuisine is that it has different creation for not only the same vegetable (stalks, stems, leaves included), but at each stage as well. Cooking traditional, in fact, ensures that you not only eat seasonal and local, but also get your necessary nutrients required. The bonus, eating and cooking local ensures you go for traditional vegetables that have grown nearby and has not travelled a lot, thereby saving on the nutrients and carbon footprint.

Another way of green travel is eat and buy local – this way you are helping a traditional industry survive and, in turn, nature too. Transform: The most impressive aspect of our parents' (and grandparents) living was their zeal to fix things works today as well. Mobiles can be rewired and donated or reused as an audio or entertainment unit for kids. Boxes and cartons can be repainted and used at home for stowing purposes and rusted clocks and vehicles as quirky showcases. After all, there is no better way to recycle a product by using it till it rusts and turns to dust.

Corporate Social Responsibility - IndiGoReach
Love for Learning February is celebrated as the month of love around the world. While we embrace our near and dear ones, we would like to reflect upon on 47,500 children across the country who love to come to school to learn, play and grow. IndiGoReach is bringing children back to school by creating a child friendly atmosphere that keeps them engaged in learning something new every single day. The iconic blue IndiGo GetSmart Bus is equipped with 20 computers and an interactive panel, which helps students
understand difficult subjects through videos while exposing them to a world of technology. The libraries and science laboratories help children to read and conduct experiments, respectively. The colourful and informative paintings on the walls make the school look attractive. Moreover, the children are most excited about the new swings and the play equipment helping them build team spirit. We understand that when it comes to learning, the sky is the limit and our children are the shining stars.
“Now I love coming to school every day and never feel like taking a holiday. I want to become a doctor when I grow up and I will study and work hard to achieve my dreams. says Khushi, a class 5 student of Government Primary School, Greater Noida.
