Mandalay

Myanmar is fascinating, varied and picturesque and in the same way historic and culturally active. Few other places in the world offer such a remarkable selection of sights and wonders as Myanmar does. While the country offers an array of experiences, it is best to visit the Big Four – Rangoon (Yangon), Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake – before you venture into other areas. These four destinations, also called 'The Golden Kite of Burma' trail, are unique because they reflect modern-day Myanmar while giving you an insight into the past.

Words Provati Dutta

31

YANGON The new name of erstwhile Rangoon, Yangon was the capital of the country till 2006 when the city of Nay Pyi Taw was declared the new capital. Located on the eastern bank of the Yangon river, it is the best point to start the Big Four trail. Offering an intoxicating mix of cultures, Yangon is a heady mix of pagodas, colonial architecture, street food and high rise buildings. Start with Shwedagon Pagoda, a place adorned with thousands of diamonds and rubies. A 76 carat diamond crowns the sacred sight. History lovers would also like the Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple, which houses the incredible 217 foot reclining Buddha, among the largest in Myanmar. Yangon has a sizeable Chinese population and its own Chinatown, located around 19th street. The architecture of this part of town is quite different from other locations. In Yangon, you can also go for a museum tour, with Bogyoke Aung San Museum and the National Museum of Art and Archaeology being the prominent ones. Don't miss a trip of circular train in Yangon, a quaint yet beautiful way to venture around the city.

32

January 2020

BAGAN

Explore the pagodas of Bagan by hot air balloon that offers a different perspective of the remarkable structures.

If you want to see a smaller yet detailed and larger version of Angkor Wat, the pagodas of Bagan are the perfect place to be. One of Asia’s most impressive archaeological sites, Bagan dates back to early second century BC and was once home to over 130,000 pagodas and religious structures. Today, you can see approximately about 2,200 of them that have stood the test of time. Travellers to the city can explore by car, bike, horse cart or hot-air balloon, each offering different perspective of the remarkable structures. Tired of exploring the temples? The Mani-Sithu Market is the perfect spot to find a wide variety of Burmese handicrafts to browse through. You can also opt for a sunset boat trip on the Irrawaddy River to end a day of temple touring.

33

MANDALAY Located north of Bagan is Myanmar’s second largest city, Mandalay. However, despite the close proximity of these two destinations, they are poles apart. While Bagan is known for history and culture, Mandalay is a thriving trade centre. Located east of the Irrawaddy River, this place is home to the Royal Palace of the Konbaung Dynasty. The most popular place here is the Mandalay Hill, a 240-metre high hill that gives you an incredible view of the whole area. The Sandamuni Pagoda is nearby, which is famous for one of the largest iron Buddhas, made up of over 41,000 pounds of iron. The entire area has 1774 shrines, each housing a single marble slab inscribed with the teachings of Lord Buddha.

34

January 2020

The Sandamuni Pagoda in Mandalay is famous for one of the largest iron Buddhas. The entire area has 1774 shrines, each housing a single marble slab inscribed with the teachings of Lord Buddha.

What's unique One of the main attractions in Mandalay is the 1200-m-long U-Bein Bridge. The wooden footbridge is known as the longest in the world.

INLE LAKE While Yangon, Bagan and Mandalay offer the cultural and historic side of Myanmar, Inle Lake is one of the most stunning lakes in the world. Tourists visiting Myanmar, flock to Inle Lake to praise its beauty and stilt houses and Buddhist temples rising from the water only add to its appeal. While modern fishing methods have taken over the majority of fishing on the lake, traditional fishermen can still be seen in the quieter corners using the same rowing technique as the boatmen. The banks of the lake are surrounded by local ethnic people known as the Intha people. If time permits, visit the Ywama floating market that takes place once in five days and get home some of the best souvenirs from Myanmar.

36

January 2020

The Kuthodaw Pagoda holds the world’s largest book and is surrounded by an insane amount of small white pagodas. Do check out the Jumping Cat Pagoda, Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda and the lotus flower thread and silk weaving factory while you in Inle Lake region.

The only means of transport to discover the Inle Lake is motorboat, available at the fee of around $10 per boat for four persons per day.

THE LADY

TENDU

Mithali Raj, arguably the best ever batswoman India has produced and the present captain of the Indian 50 over team, speaks on the forthcoming world T-20, her own career, the 2021 50-over world cup, the state of the women’s game and much more in this conversation with Boria Majumdar. 58

January 2020

BORIA - You have just been to Australia as event ambassador for Australian tourism. You are now a regular in the leadership lecture circuit and one of the most sought after sports stars in India. Will you attribute this transformation to India’s performance in the 2017 World Cup? MITHALI - Most certainly I will. The world cup changed it all. When we went to England to play the tournament, there were a handful of journalists in Mumbai to see us off. And when we came back as runner up, landing in India at 2am in the morning, there were more than 100 journalists waiting at the Mumbai airport. The scenes from that night will forever be etched in my memory and marked a real transformation for the women’s game in India. We were given the respect we deserved, money came into the sport, corporate India had started to take interest and things began to happen.

ULKAR

BORIA - The 3 team exhibition women’s IPL in 2019 was played to packed stands in Jaipur. That too was a serious statement.

Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour was bestowed on Mithali Raj in 2015.

During the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup, Raj scored her 7th consecutive halfcentury and made a record for most consecutive fifties by a player.

MITHALI - Of course it was. We were all thrilled to see the number of people in the stadium. More importantly, there were an equal number waiting outside to get in. It was evident to everyone that people were keen to see us play and that’s what should

I am fully focussed to play the 2021 World Cup for India and trying to win a world title for my country. help the game move forward in India. Sooner than later, there will have to be a women’s IPL and that will mark the next big surge in women’s cricket. BORIA - Coming to your own career, you have now given up on T-20 cricket to focus on the 50 over format. And your team has performed excellently in recent times beating quality teams like England, South Africa and New Zealand. How do you look at your career as we welcome 2020?

They Said

"Captain Mithali Raj has been leading from the front. Her cool approach to the game shall surely help the entire team." - Shri Narendra Modi, PM of India during ICC Women's World Cup, 2017

“A great moment for Indian cricket, Mithali Raj becomes the highest run scorer in Women’s ODI Cricket History today. Champion Stuff!” - Virat Kohli, Indian Skipper

60

January 2020

MITHALI - I am fully focussed to play the 2021 world cup for India and trying to win a world title for my country. We have twice come close in 2005 and 2017, and 2021 will be my last world cup. Yes, the team is doing well but there are a few things that we still need to fine tune and work on. The team has a nice mix of experience and youth and with the right approach and right preparation, we will have a very good chance of doing well in the world cup. BORIA - Your biopic is happening with actor Tapsee Pannu in the lead. Is this also a statement how women’s cricket is now nationally acceptable? MITHALI - If my biopic helps us reach more women and inspire them, I would be the happiest. The idea is to encourage the future generation to take to the game and aspire to play for India. That women’s cricket is a viable career option needs to be communicated and the biopic should help do that. Tapsee is a great actor and I am keen to see how she masters the cover drive! BORIA - With the T-20 world cup coming up, I have to ask you this. Shafali Verma, the 16 year old player, has made waves in the limited time she has been around. She is being seen as India’s riposte to Alyssa Healy and with Smriti Mandhana makes for a devastating opening pair. Your thoughts?

MITHALI - She is a very talented cricketer. If she stays on for a sizeable time in a T-20 contest, she is more than capable of winning the game and that’s what makes her an attractive proposition for us. With Smriti, Shafali will have a crucial role in the T-20 and that gives you a sense of what Sourav world cup and if she fires with Jemima wants to do. I am very optimistic about the and Harman to follow, there is no reason future, especially with a cricketer heading why India can’t do well in Australia in the BCCI for the first time in years. February 2020. BORIA - While a lot has happened for the women’s game, gender equality is still some distance away. Australia for example has now achieved gender equality with respect to their cricket. You expect more from the BCCI going forward?

BORIA - Anything that still drives you and remains an obsession? MITHALI - Yes the world title. As I said, it is time we go over the line in 2021. That’s what I am obsessed with and focussed on.

MITHALI - See, under Sourav Ganguly as BCCI President, things will certainly improve. He is a top cricketer who understands the requirements of players and will surely advance the women’s game as much as he does the men’s game. If you take a look at the pink ball Test in Kolkata it was good to see us being felicitated and celebrated with the best of our game

Duel Action Fasten your seat belts as we take you on a 360 degree ride through two IndiGo destinations. Standing tall in the two secondary colours of IndiGo, there’s Varanasi in one corner and Istanbul in another.

VARANASI

ISTANBUL

Down the history lane Located opposite the Tulsi Ghat, the 17th century Ramnagar Fort and Palace on the eastern banks of the Ganga was built by the Maharaja of Benaras. Carved in red sandstone, the fort houses a temple and a museum with pavilions built in Mughal style and is famous for the 'Durbar hall' dedicated to the public.

Located on the hill atop Istanbul's Old City, the Topkapi Palace was once home to Sultan Mehmet II, who moved to the palace after conquering the city in 1453. Spread over four courtyards and 4,00,000 sqm, the palace buzzes with fountains, opulent pavilions, and a sprawling harem.

The foodie tales When you are visiting Varanasi, make sure you give a try to tamaatar chat at Deena Chaat Bhandar, Dashaswamedh Road. It is a local version of aloo chaat and is made from a mashed mixture of boiled potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green chillies and fresh coriander leaves.

Shoppers' delight The city of Varanasi is famous world over for its intricate and luxurious Banarsi sarees. You can buy the silk saree anywhere in the city but the best place to pick up an authentic one would be the wholesale shops in Thatheri Bazaar.

Though Istanbul is known for its Grand Bazaar, a little cobble-stoned street near the historic Galata Tower, Serdar-i Ekrem is probably one of Istanbul’s coolest shopping streets. It is filled with quirky shops, designer boutiques, several hotels and excellent restaurants – a perfect shopping stop.

For the night-angels No trip to Varanasi is complete without watching an evening aarti at the Ganges. You can witness the beautiful ritual unfold at the Dashaswamedh Ghat, which is lit at that time with chants, flowers and brass lamps of almost 4.5 kgs.

You are most likely to visit the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque during daylight hours. However, it is best to take a stroll through Sultanahmet during night. The streets are lit after the sunset and you can enjoy the festive atmosphere and beautiful rainbow musical fountains.

For adventure junkies If you are a water baby, you must go on a cruise along the Bosphorus' European & Asian Sides, the Golden Horn, tour near the Black Sea Mouth at Anadolu Kavagi and Poyrazkoy, or to the Princes' Islands. Exploring the majestic city is an exhilarating experience on its own but witnessing it from the sky on a paramotor is what you call mind boggling. When you are in Varanasi, do not miss the chance to view the breathtaking city and the mighty Ganga from the sky. Recommendation: Do make a visit to the deer park in Sarnath. It is about 13 kilometers away from Varanasi. The 1.4 km long Istiklal Avenue is the beating heart of Istanbul and is visited by nearly 3 million people daily.

Dare to Bare

“Don’t do it for the money because there isn’t any!,” that's what I keep telling when aspiring writers come across and ask me about writing. So why have I done so? “I believe there are few good reasons why people write books. Rest assured that money isn't one of them because writers get paid crap... The first reason is that there is a story inside them that they are just dying to tell.” However, that is not the reason why I started writing. “The second reason for writing a book is the ego trip. To see their name in print, to maybe have the phase 'bestselling author' against their name.” That is the reason why I wrote the book Naked. Having said that I am not someone who goes well with routines. Whenever I have to write something, I lock myself in a room for days at a stretch and knock it out.

Don’t worry if you have seen the show though since the book has five times the content of the show. It traces my life from the streets of Kolkata to the University of Oxford and over 2,000 stages across the world. The book uses the vehicle of my life to talk about the human experience. It is a light and easy read that also takes the reader through an emotional roller-coaster ride. By the end, it should give the reader a new lens with which to look at their own life. A lens that allows them, like me, to always see the positive. And of course, the funny! Moreover, I also believe that a great story is one that takes the reader on an emotional journey and one that the reader can identify with.

So what's Naked? I can’t think of any person who hasn’t at some point thought that it would be nice to have a book under his belt. However, in honesty, this book is based on a show called Naked that I’ve toured all over the world. My publisher saw the show and thought the story would make for a good book, and so I obliged.

EARLY LIFE However, it was not easy. My father was a tea planter. He went to Assam to work — at a monthly salary of `845 — and stayed with the same company for 35 years. August 2018 - Greta Thunberg started protesting outside Sweden's Parliament on Fridays holding a sign reading 'School Strike for Climate'. Within a year, her school strike inspired millions of young people around the world to take to the streets and demand action on climate change.

October 2019 - She refused to accept an environmental award or the prize sum of 350,000 Danish kroner saying that the climate movement needed people in power to start to 'listen' to 'science' and not awards.

Greta Thunberg first learned about climate change when she was eight year old.

January 2020

According to a recent UN report, more than 820 people in the world go hungry. Put that next to our current population and it is one of every nine individuals going without food every day. This grim image gets darker with the speed with which resources have been consumed in the past decade. It was this harrowing picture that pushed UN to put together the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. Commonly known as Global Goals, it was a blueprint that, if implemented actively, would be able to “provide a better and more sustainable future to all”. The deadline to achieve all this was set at 2030. Since then the initiative has had collaboration of various forms to enable grassroot level – one of them was the UN supported Chefs Manifesto that was put together in early 2018.

#Eattherainbow was a concept that began in 2014 and was devised by a group of nutritionist and paediatricians to eat a more colourful looking bowl.

The idea, says Chef Sabyasachi Gorai, a core team member of the Chefs Manifesto, “was to urge chef community across the world to pick different ways to help them achieve the goal. The common aim was hunger eradication and make food affordable.” The Indian contingent led by Chef Manjit S Gill chose aspects that were closer to the Indian culinary ethos – one of them, adds Chef Gorai, “was #eattherainbow. The other was 50futurefood.” Fascinatingly, #Eattherainbow was a concept that began in 2014 and was devised by a group of nutritionist and paediatricians. The movement began to encourage parents and children to eat a more colourful looking bowl. In India, however, it was a practice long followed – but changing too, courtesy a rising population that was shifting to more resource-intensive food like milk and meat. In fact, seasoned chef and #eatwiththerainbow advocator, Vikas Seth, shares, “three years ago, 60 per cent of the menu was dedicated to meat dishes.” The result: more land shifted to cater to milk and meat demands. An environmental analyst and longtime critic of waste and inefficiency in agricultural practices, Dr David Pimentel viewed it as a colossal waste of cultivatable soil. The rise of expendable income had another flaw: it led to wastage. People bought far more food than necessary. The all-you-can buffet offering adding to the concept. In fact, as per a study, nearly 40 per cent of food produced in India is wasted. A major contributor to this was hotel industry. While a few conscientious chefs were taking measures to reduce at least their share of it, the change came during the 2015 Terra

One such movement was for Millets, supported by the Karnataka Government. Chef Seth adopted the grain and called it a culinary breakthrough that helped bring down the carbon food print as well. Hotels joined the bandwagon by retweaking their offerings. Says Chef Neeraj Rawoot of Sofitel, “the trend of small portion, sharing plates and community table ensured lesser wastage.” Another successful format was the 'made on order'.

Madre in Shillong. It was the first time, adds Chef Gorai, “that the chef community came abreast with the kind of resources we had at our disposal and chefs like Joel Basumatari. An advocate of indigenous seasonal produce and Slow Food culinary expert from India, Chef Basumatari was using his Naga heritage to keep the old culinary culture alive.” It served as a wake up call to an industry and a nation that had been, for the last three decades, playing to the Western style of food. And then started, adds Chef Seth, “a back to basics programme with chefs trying to find answers in our traditional cuisine to cut down on the food cost.” This change while brought back regional cuisine into the hotel, it also exposed chefs to the

Restaurants, however, were the biggest advocator of #eattherainbow. Most of them led by example by collaborating with farmers for their produce and introducing menus that played with colours, others went a step ahead to own and collaborate with farms. The other initiative is of course the new trend of foraging among chefs like Chef Prateek Sadhu, who sources most of his ingredients during season by visiting the hills in Kashmir, "It is a tough beat to go up there and source your own gucchi and cheese, but at the end of it, it is also about educating your diners about ingredients that is local, nutritious and natural.” It is the only way through which, he adds, “we can widen the palate and reduce the dependency on certain food.”

For a hassle-free travel experience 45 minutes prior

Unless it's the climax of a Hollywood rom-com

Everyone loves a happy ending

We love your Grandma's pickle

The check-in counter closes 45 minutes before departure. We request you to reach the airport on time. Well, unless your girlfriend is leaving you and it's your last chance to convince her to stay. In that case, get there earlier.

The boarding gates close 25 minutes prior to departure. To avoid missing your flight, please be there on time.

It's really disheartening to lose something so precious to airport security. So please keep track of what articles are allowed in cabin baggage to avoid last-minute offloading.
