FROM THE
CMD’S DESK
Dear Readers, The festivities continue at SpiceJet, both for our valued customers as well as our employees. The year 2015 has been a remarkable year for SpiceJet as we shrugged off a difficult period and moved forward with pride and confidence. Our reliability continues its upward trend, as we proudly maintain an excellent On Time Performance (OTP). Specifically in Mumbai, the most constrained airport in India, we are proud to be #1 for third time in a row in November. Our cancellations were also amongst the lowest of all airlines in India. Our new routes to Dubai, from Amritsar and Kozhikode (Calicut), have had an excellent response with all daily flights carrying over 90% load. In fact, all our 8 daily flights to Dubai from all over India are following a similar trend. For our business and time sensitive customers, we now offer an Airport Lounge at major metros, for a nominal charge. As usual, the in-flight Food and Beverage service has seen new additions – for kids, there is a plane shaped carry away bag with delectable goodies; and for adults, there is soon going to be a choice of alcoholic drinks (only on international flights).
To ensure that you receive and send not only the festive gifts to loved ones, but also important business packets in record time, SpiceJet cargo has tied up with a leading e-commerce player, and has since started a new integrated service. SpiceJet reported a net profit of `23.8 crore for Q2 FY16, the third profitable quarter in a row. Our turnaround has been praised not only in India, but around the world. In fact, Bloomberg recently reported that this year SpiceJet was the best performing airline stock in the world. The entire SpiceJet family has shown resilience and worked hard to bring the airline back on track. I am delighted to say that in November, SpiceJet was the #1 airline again with the highest occupancy of 92%. This is the seventh consecutive month in which we have had the fullest planes in the country. I thank each and every one of you for your overwhelming support. You could be on any of our 300 daily flights today; each one, a world-class flying experience. As Christmas and New Year approach, please accept my very best wishes for you and your loved ones! Jai Hind!

Making air travel even more convenient, SpiceJet launched ‘Carry More Onboard!’, an optional December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
service for travellers with heavier cabin baggage. Passengers who carry cabin baggage heavier than 7 kg, and do not want to check-in, can opt for this. Fliers can carry bags weighing up to 5 kg extra, a maximum of 12 kg onboard, while paying a nominal fee for each kg above 7 kg. This helps passengers to save time and avoid waiting at the baggage carousal on arrival. As the current maximum size dimensions still apply, bags can be heavier, but not larger, and the standard fee baggage allowances remain as before.
Customers can opt for this product during airport check-in and at the airport ticket counters, against a receipt. They can also pre-book and purchase it online. The scheme applies to all domestic flights, as well as international flights originating in India. The product is non-refundable unless the entire booking is cancelled. It can be purchased with any type of fare such as the – SpiceSaver, Hand Baggage Only, SpiceFlex, etc.
HAND BAGGAGE ONLY
A unique airline, SpiceJet offers
27 another unique product discount for those passengers who carry hand-baggage only. Under the new fare, discount offered for a one-way flight is `200, while for a round trip, the discount is `100 per leg. Available on most direct domestic flights (including via flights), this fare has a minimum 15-day advance purchase period and no free checkin baggage allowance shall be permissible for the bookings made under this fare. Bookings for this can be made on www.spicejet. com, at airport ticket offices, and through selected online travel agent portals. Passengers should keep in mind that
hand-baggage allowance does not change. Those who book these fares, but later decide to check-in luggage, will have to pay more.
HOT MEALS
A delicious meal onboard is like cherry on the cake, allowing fliers to rid themselves of exhaustion and hunger. Passengers are spoiled for choice as they can opt from both an Indian or Continental cuisine. The airline recently introduced an all new menu, SpiceJet Bistro, that offers hot meals, sub sandwiches, meal bundles and special meals for diabetics and those preferring Jain meals. The airline also introduced meal options for Navratras. With the new menu, all breakfast meals are served with an eggless croissant and a butter chiplet, while the meals served rest of the day are accompanied with an eggless dessert, whole wheat roll and butter chiplet. From Masala Frittata to Paneer Kathi Roll, Grilled Vegetables sandwich
to Tex Vegetable sub sandwiches, passengers are spoilt for choice. Fliers can pre-book a complete meal, i.e., choose their meals and drinks. In a new initiative, standalone beverage can also be pre-booked. 2015 TURNAROUND
THE
YEAR
38
December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
A remarkable year for SpiceJet, 2015 not only marked the return of its co-founder Ajay Singh but also return of the airline to profitability, delivering great results, completing a decade of operations in India and the emergence of a revitalised brand.
A
t the turn of 2015, SpiceJet had experienced a few challenging months, a difficult period in time when the airline faced rising losses, flight cancellations, debts, reduction in its fleet size and pruning of its network. By February, the airline was in the process of changing hands, marking the return of its co-founder Ajay Singh, now the Promoter, Chairman and Managing Director, widely known for his hands-on approach. Also, with the efforts of the Ministry of Civil Aviation in providing 'breathing room' from creditors for the restructure and re-capitalisation of the airline, the new management tackled issues head on by settling outstanding dues, renegotiating contracts, optimising aircraft utilisation and maximising revenue. The airline focussed on restoring operational reliability and winning back customer confidence to boost revenues, while negotiating settlements and re-negotiating several major contracts to bring
down costs. As a result, in May 2015, the airline reported a net profit of `22.5 cr for Q4FY15, a turnaround from the net loss of `321.5 cr for the same quarter last year. This represented the airline's return to profitability of the company after seven quarters, a clear indication of the recovery that was well in progress, the resilience of the brand and the unwavering faith, passion and commitment of the employees and customers. Keeping its targets clearly in perspective, the airline reported its third quarterly profit in a row in November, with a net profit of `23.8 cr. With its load factor hitting 93% in September this year, it was the fifth consecutive month that SpiceJet maintained a Passenger Load Factor over 90%, while simultaneously improving upon its On-Time-Performance. With this, SpiceJet affirms its commitment towards being a low-cost airline with the most affordable fares, while ensuring an outstanding customer experience.

The frequencies on multiple routes were also reinforced, such as Mumbai-Chennai, Hyderabad-Kochi, etc. December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
New onward connections were also added – Pune-Srinagar, DelhiMadurai, Mumbai-Madurai, among others. In November, the airline introduced a direct flight from Chennai to Bangkok, the second direct service to Thailand's capital, while earlier this year, services to Hubli, from Mumbai and Bengaluru, were resumed.
A LANDMARK MOMENT
In the month of May this year, SpiceJet celebrated a decade of operations in the domestic market, a decade of changing Indian aviation through innovation. What started ten years ago with only three leased aircraft has today morphed into a formidable airline carrier, a beacon of hope and aspiration to make the
skies more affordable and accessible to the public.
BRAND SPICEJET
Brands are not born overnight. It takes years of investment by the team to create an image. Today, SpiceJet has carved a place for itself, and has brought about a fresh perspective to air travel. In June 2015, during its 10th anniversary celebrations, SpiceJet unveiled its new revamped look – Red. Hot. Spicy. While the tone of communication has changed, a few brand assets have been reinforced, such as the colour red signifies

CURRENT SCENARIO

With the operations having stabilised, load factor on the rise and better on-time performance, the airline's growth is shaping up quite well. From increasing its fleet size and expanding its network base, the message is loud and clear - SpiceJet is back. Back to doing what it does best, fly passengers on time, at a reasonable cost, and in a clean and safe manner, while peppering the journey with a dash of spice.

This is what makes us human, that we can’t be perfect but we have to strive to be. Spotlight 3 Jupiter Jupiter on its positives makes you ambitious, hardworking, intellectual, blesses you with leadership in work and spiritual fields, and it can bless you with a power to have that financial goal and achieve it. However, if it goes negative on your energy graph, it creates disharmony in relationships, hidden enemies, financial and carrier instability in looping cycles. One needs to check their energy levels and extract the spiritual and positive benefits universe has blessed you with no 3. The curious case of 4 & 8 “In my research, nearly 70% people are connected to these numbers, and this loop then influences your further generations too.’ One usually guards themselves because we have all heard a lot about disappointments and delays, sorrows and hardships of 4 & 8 and with 7 they form a trio of these energies. But I see them powerful steroids, to be handled carefully. Then I will channelize it to positive planning and maximise your fortune’s profits. Feel blessed if you belong to them, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did. Handle your energies well, because only in the right hands they will empower with 4 & 8.
Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and detangle the web, to create a free path for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. “We have seen the sunrise, but to feel the warmth of it we have to wake up every day.” And every one of us should strive to be more than what we can be, I do so, so should you. And let My Numerology help you and prepare you for this serene but extraordinary life. My advice “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. Knowledge about finances, career, turnaround years, lucky dates, months, years, things that help you have a strong backup plan for everything in life. “No mantra, fasting, name changes singularly guarantees you anything. Ultimately its you who has to foresee the future, and I help you to do so.” Follow a simplistic solution that I call Sandhiya Meh Mehhta’s remedy system, and we will work on your energies and align them in the right direction The Success road ahead There is a Buddhist saying, “You yourself must strive; the Buddha’s just point the way.” There are no criteria to evaluate what the results of the remedies are; I just believe in helping who believe in the power of universe. If you believe in yourself and the universe let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no desired time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, ever-glorious and a good part of our society & I continue to achieve results with all my clients."- Sandhiya Mehhta. In this issue, we showcase a few destinations that make for brilliant day trips from Bangkok So chart out your travel plans, and indulge the travel bug in you.
KANCHANABURI
Located almost 125 km from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is a town in west Thailand rich in natural beauty with several national parks, caves and waterfalls. Established by King Rama I in late 19th century,
it was meant to be a first line in defence against the Burmese. Well connected to Bangkok by rail and road, it takes two to three hours to reach this gorgeous destination. Nature trail: Far from the typically sun-kissed beach destinations of Thailand, Kanchanaburi has an ethereal aura. Erawan National Park, founded in 1975, is located in the Tenasserim Hills of the Kanchanaburi Province, and the major attraction is the seven-tier Erawan Falls with its emerald green ponds. Tourists can spot macaques, wild elephants, lar gibbon, crested serpent eagle and dark-necked tailorbird, among others. There are a number of caves too with trails that pose for much excitement for the adventure junkies. Travellers can even visit the Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, that along with an adjoining sanctuary, has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tryst with the past: Relive the history of Kanchanaburi by browsing through the war memorials or the sound and light shows. The most famous historical attraction is the 'Bridge over the River Kwai', or the 'Death Railway' as it is known currently. Set against a scenic landscape of the river, the bridge is still in use today. The events during World War II, that surround the construction of this bridge, has been immortalised as a book, and even a film. The Jeath War Museum elaborates on the history of the town. The Don Rak War Cemetary and the Hellfire Pass also deem a visit.

Tiger Cave Temple: Established in 1971, this architectural wonder is clearly visible from far. The majestic seated Buddha statue has a gold mosaic, with a beautiful shell-like covering against the breathtaking backdrop of neat rice paddies and distant mountains. Kayaking tours along River Kwai is another popular jaunt, that end with a dip in the green waters, while organic cooking workshops offer a glimpse into the nation's culinary heritage.
road access. Thus, once the train station was in place, the city of Hua Hin gradually took shape around it. Today, the brightly coloured wooden structure stands out among the modern buildings and malls.
HUA HIN
An idyllic beach resort town in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula in Thailand, Hua Hin has the charm of a fishing village in perfect harmony with its royal past. Almost 200 km from Bangkok, the city is connected to the capital by air, rail and road. Water taxis are also available. A perfect holiday spot, here travellers can enjoy the fine sandy beaches, picturesque hotels and a host of water sports. attraction here. Most of the beaches are wide and shallow. A number of restaurants are lined up along the beaches, offering perfect watering holes for tourists. A vineyard, 45 km away from Hua Hin, offers tours around the scenic mountainscape, wine tasting, etc.
AMPHAWA

A popular day trip destination from Bangkok is Amphawa, 100 km from the capital of Thailand. As the Mae Klong River flows through the northern part of the district, Amphawa is home to a floating market that is a famous attraction. With quaint wooden shops, vintage cafes and restaurants selling books, sweet treats and souvenirs along the banks of the
canal, this floating market offers a fascinating insight into the life of the locals. Float by wooden row boats piled high with fruits and vegetables, pause to buy a bowl of rice porridge or noodles, or try the sweets made from the locally grown sugar palm. Temple hopping: Amphawa has many temples, but Wat Bangkhae Noi merits a visit. The temple facade heralds the local architecture, but on entering the main building, the intricately carved wooden panels that
showcase scenes from Buddha's life will leave you stunned. The temple is shrouded in the twisted roots of a mighty Banyan tree. Firefly cruise: Opt for a unique firefly cruise down the river. A languorous ride in a long tail boat, while gazing at the many trees lit up with fireflies, is indeed a sight to behold. Travellers can rent a bicycle to explore the fruit and vegetable orchards that surround the floating market.

options today are endless. Cut out leaves, bells or star shapes made from icing, a festive ribbon tied around the base of the cake for an elegant touch.
ICING IS STILL CLASSIC
Detailing is in demand today and many prefer intricately decorated cakes. Classic icing is still one of the most popular methods of making a cake attractive. Royal Icing, typically made with egg whites and icing sugar, is extremely useful. The traditional snow scene on Christmas cakes, as well as piped swirls can be made effortlessly with this. Fun sugar plaques, holly and snowflake wafer decorations, cute icing decorations in the shape of Santas, gingerbread men, holly, baubles, are much sought-after by customers, as these add a festive look. Buttercream icing is extremely versatile and a hot-favourite. But, fondant or sugar-based paste is the
newest craze and a popular choice for decorating cakes. Sugar, corn syrup, water and gelatin are melted, cooled and rolled flat and then draped over the cake. For a richer taste, most cakes are iced in a rich buttercream layer before fondant is put on top. Chefs and housewives alike, love fondant as it enables you to play around with your decorations. With fondant, it is possible to attain a smoother and precise creation. One can paint upon it with food colouring, cut it into a myriad shapes, or make it look like ruffles. The fondant can simply be draped over a cake to make it look perfectly smooth.

Different edible frostings are creatively used by chefs. The classic ones are the royal icings, ranging in many colours. Chef Saha quips, “We also glaze our Christmas cakes with different flavoured glaçage like Caramel or Hazelnut.” For those not wanting a layer of icing, a glaze with the cherry juice and icing sugar drizzled on the cake while it is still warm can also suffice. Alternatively, brush with apricot glaze and decorate with candied fruits. Chef Sanjana of La Folie Mumbai ensures that her cakes are beautifully handcrafted by their internationally trained chefs, thus giving customers sublime products closer home. Her cakes being mousse-based, La Folie generally does not use fondant. Maple leaf and other edible decorations are used instead. Some go a step further and even make use of printing images on edible rice paper and then paste it onto the white frosting layer. Edible wafer papers are also an interesting and quick resource. A rich fruit cake for Christmas may not be everyone’s calling. A cheesecake with gingerbread crust can be an attractive and delicious option. Cheesecakes are being preferred by many on Christmas as these are lighter, easier to make and break the monotony. Three of the most popular cheesecake toppings are fruit, chocolate and caramel. With a plethora of options available today, one can get confused. Executive Chef Marty Kindleysides, Sheraton at The Brigade Gateway, Bengaluru, believes that a Christmas cake should be decorated simply, adding, “I prefer a marzipan icing with a simple red ribbon and a little decoration.” Tradition or innovation, the ways to dress up a Christmas cake are many. Anupam Kher: Why are people unhappy? Sadhguru: Everything you’ve done in your life so far – career, business, wealth or family – has been in pursuit of joy. But if you check and see, has your joy increased or decreased since childhood? For most, it has reduced. People are unhappy because they haven’t taken charge of the fundamental instruments of life given to them. The nature and basis of your experience is within you. Pain or pleasure, joy or misery, agony and ecstasy happen only within you. So, why try and extract joy from outside? The outside never happens 100% the way you want. But at least you should happen the way you want, and if so, you would obviously choose joy. A spiritual process means we don’t see joy as something we could achieve in our life, we see joy as the very basis of our lives. Yoga gives you access to the very source of creation within you. There is an intelligence within you that can transform a piece of bread into a human being. If even a drop of this intelligence enters your daily life, you will live magically.

Mohd Saif (SpiceJet passenger from Delhi): How do I handle my sensitive ego? Sadhguru: Many people have taken this mode: When they’re joyful, Mr. Ego is absent. Whenever they do something nasty, they blame it on Mr. Ego. This is just one more way of passing the buck. If you say, “Me and my ego reside within this body,” it means there are two of you. If there are two of you, that means you are either schizophrenic or possessed! You are an individual. If you are an individual, you understand that whether you are wonderful or horrible, it is you. If you realise this, would you want to be horrible? SpiceJet welcomes its passengers to ask Sadhguru questions on yoga, health, wellbeing and other topics of general interest. Select questions will be answered in forthcoming issues. Please email your question to mediarelations@ ishafoundation.org For more of Sadhguru’s wisdom, visit http://isha.sadhguru.org

This mural took more than four years to complete and is one of ITC Maurya’s first artworks since way back in 1979. REFLECTING THE CULTURE
As guests travel all across the world, hotels and resorts are designed to best suit local climate, geography, architecture and also, celebrate the regional or national art & culture. Art can be found in all forms such as paintings, stonework, art in wood, antique sculptures, rich tapestry, wall engravings and artefacts, etc.
“The Gateway Resort, Damdama Lake, Gurgaon, reflects the local rustic culture and blends it with the natural environment,” says Pulkesin Mohan, GM, The Gateway Resort, Damdama Lake, Gurgaon. The lobby houses 20 feet long applique patchwork and embroidered textile wall hangings made by craftswomen in Banaskantha in Gujarat and by the Lambani tribal embroiderers from Karnataka. There are even stone etched obelisks as signage across the resort that were inspired by Warli folk art. This art form uses a very basic graphic vocabulary; a circle, a triangle and a square. The property also showcases artwork in the form of scrap metal sculptures depicting rural life along with mixed media art, incorporating magazine and newspaper clippings, handmade paper, fabric, paint and other varied items. Maintaining the ethos of the land, ITC Maurya reflects the local culture in various elements in and around the hotel. The property takes its name from the Mauryan dynasty

known for its two remarkable leaders - Emperor Chandragupta and Ashoka. Thus, this royal lineage is reflected in the art and architecture. “A Ramachandran’s Ashoka after Kalinga shows a pensive Ashoka in deep introspection. This bronze sculpture renders the Mauryan Emperor reflecting on the holocaust that has been caused – that was as imminent then as it is today,” elaborates Songadwala. ITC Maurya commissioned Meera Mukherjee to do a sculpture on Ashoka, and she focussed on Ashoka's gradual transformation from being a warrior to becoming a philosopher statesman. This great piece of art stands tall in the Nandiya Gardens within its premises. Situated in the pink city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, ITC Rajputana heralds the art form of the royal Rajput culture. Sunil Gupta, GM, ITC Rajputana, informs that the frescoes of Rajput royalties in the lobby have been painted by Padma Shri Kripal Singh, a renowned craftsman and ceramist of India. In the lobby, the traditional choonajaali work forms
the trellis of the screens in white, while the lobby floor is embellished with great Makrana diamond cut flowers.
FOSTERING ART
Apart from displaying key works of renowned artists, hotels also offer space to promote the works of upcoming artists, providing them the much-needed push to reach out to the right audience. Taj Palace, New Delhi offers its Tea Lounge to upcoming artists for a week, free of cost. The artist of the week is present at the lounge everyday between 3-6 pm, where they also paint live. On the other hand, Taj Bengal encourages talented artists from rural areas by displaying their works at the hotel and assists them with access to buyers. Adds Sanzeev Bhatia, GM, The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa, “The Art Spice Gallery acts as a platform that makes the art reachable to potential patrons of visual arts in a five-star ambience and comfort. I absolutely love the peace of Santorini in Greece. While it is serene, it is also such a fun place to be. The candy-hued houses carved into cliffs are marvellous. What the Portuguese cook prepared initially was anything but a piece of cake However, research followed and when reprocessed – marbled with cinnamon, topped with finely granulated purple, green and gold sugar and then drizzled with buttery white icing, and finally shaped into a cube that only a true artist-in-a-baker could create – it returned to the table and scripted a new chapter in the history of Swiss confectionaries in Kolkata.
THE BEGINNING
The French reached Chandernagore in 1688. The connoisseur of good food, they arrived with the recipes of flour products: Pauroti (loaf of bread); feathery flaky millefuilles pastry and many other delectable items. Bored with the same old grub, the Kolkatans fell for the appetising aroma of pastries, sauces and cookies prepared by the French. The air around Hotel De France, now the Civil Court on the famous Chandernagore Strand, is perhaps still moistened with the aromas of vanilla, strawberry, hazelnut crème, chocolate and tempting tang of many other spices. It was in the middle of the 18th century when the city stood witness to taverns, punch houses and coffee houses EMERGENCE OF CAKE SHOPS
With the arrival of the British (with Job Charnock setting his feet on the bank of the Hooghly on August 28, 1690), number of patisseries in and around the city grew, following an increasing popularity of cake as one of the favourite snacks amongst the Europeans. It was in the middle of the eighteenth century when the city stood to witness taverns, punch houses and coffee houses sprouting one by one like beans. However, by the middle of the nineteenth century, cake had became one of the popular items on breakfast tables of the citybased Europeans and the Bongs who began venerating them.

Judging the trend, John Spence opened Spence’s Hotel, a hotelcum-bakery near the Treasury Building and the western gate of the Governor House in 1830, which later shifted to Wellesley Place and continued to serve Calcuttans and eminent visitors to the city, especially, those who believed in the art of living with elegance, till 1970.

Gradually, it grew to be a full-fledged hotel in 15 years following the demand of the Calcuttans. There was a time when people passing by the hotel could get a whiff of the smell of baking and vanilla. Birds of the same feather soon flocked together; Koyam & Co., on 30, Free School Street in 1858; Nagram Das at 118, Municipal Market (later renamed as New Market) in 1878 and Federico Peliti, a Turin born Italian sculptor-cumphotographer-cum caterer who came to India in 1866 as a caterer to the Viceroy, the Earl of Mayo. It was in 1918 that Angelo Firpo, an Italian, reached Kolkata and opened a hotel at the same location where once stood the hotel of his compatriot Federico Peliti. Angelo shifted his hotel to Chowringhee in 1925. In 1926-27, a Swiss couple, Mr. & Mrs. Flury opened a cake shop in collaboration with one Mr. Trinca. They named it Flury’s & Trinca’s but as the partnership fell through, it became Flury’s and made Kolkatans fall head over heels in love with their varieties of cakes, cookies, pastries, patties and range of countless varieties. Trend continues, as we find almost every day, a new cake maker forays into the same industry. Kathleen opened their shop in 1977, followed by Kookie Jar in 1985 at Rawdon Street. outes2Roots believes art stands tall overlooking all the conformist and orthodox ideas of forged borders and transgresses all these boundaries, embracing all of us irrespective of our nationalities. It provides a platform to all the budding artistes of these nations to showcase their talent by organising and conducting events and exhibitions.
They invite artistes from across borders and even send artistes of Indian origin to bring about a better understanding about our culture and values, encouraging peace and amity among these nations December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Formed in 2004, the main objective of Routes2Roots was to enhance people-topeople contact in the SAARC region by hosting cultural events. The main concern was to highlight the similarities of culture, music, art, and heritage of this region as well as bring out the diversities, such that people can absorb oneness of each other and animosities can be reduced. Special emphasis was on India – Pakistan relations. Hard work of initial years showed encouraging results and a large number of Pakistani artistes started performing in India, and even Indian artistes performed in Pakistan. The success and uniqueness of this initiative in building Tier II diplomacy and developing peace through culture, motivated the team to spread their initiative to other countries across the world.

Routes2Roots have successful tie-ups with ICCR, Delhi Tourism, Rajasthan Tourism, Jammu & Kashmir Tourism and other government and non-governmental organisations. It is also a member of the World Association of Non-governmental Organisations in the USA. To spread awareness, personalities like Juhi Chawla, Anuradha Mahindra, etc., joined Tina Vachani in supporting her. Routes2Roots has been successfully carrying out shows and exhibitions to achieve their mission.
CHALLENGES
Rakesh Gupta, co-founder of the initiative, shares, “Initially there were lots of challenges like getting visas, funding, acceptance of upcoming foreign artistes and most importantly creating awareness about the group’s objectives. Its first three-day programme, hosted in Delhi, was a roaring success as thousands of people visited each day at the venue including celebrities. This has helped us to raise funds, especially from the corporate sector. Gradually we started hosting programmes in all the major cities of India.”
SUPPORTING THE CAUSE
The initiative was supported by December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
various media groups to increase the awareness and viewership of the programmes. In the meantime, Indian as well as foreign missions got to know of these initiatives and the group started getting their support in terms of easy visas and increased participation in programmes. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Ministry of Culture helped the group organise its events throughout India and other nations too.
PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE CONNECT Tina Vachani, another co-founder of the NGO, proudly shares that the process of soft Tier II diplomacy is slow. However, due to cultural exchanges in their case, the
acceptance and tolerances of each other grew rapidly and it is visible in the society. For example, recently the performance of a Pakistani artiste was not allowed to be staged, but the public outcry and protest against the stoppage of the show was very loud from the common people. "We, from our side, hosted a concert of a Pakistani artiste Javed Bashir, in Delhi to a packed venue within days of the controversy, and the artiste got a standing ovation. This is the impact of people-to-people contact," Tina informs.

In 2010, an ambitious project named ‘Exchange for Change’, a student’s exchange and oral histories programme with school children from India and Pakistan, aged between 10-14 years was introduced. The children were connected to the year-long programme by writing letters, exchanging postcards and collages, audio and video recordings and visiting each other’s country to meet their pen friends. Till date,
Hard work must be put in to bring peace and understanding in the world more than 12,000 children from 10 cities and 36 schools from India and Pakistan have participated in this ongoing programme, making it the world's largest Oral Histories Exchange Program. The result has been phenomenal and change of
perception and mindset is clearly visible. Rakesh sums up, “We need to work harder to bring about peace and understanding in the world. We feel we have achieved substantially as far as people-to-people contact is concerned, and now is the time that decision makers have to listen. We also await our thousands of young children, the leaders of tomorrow to grow up and be our voice. The work will continue no matter what the odds are.”
THE INITIATORS Tina Vachani and Rakesh Gupta are the co-founders of Routes2Roots. A common passion to culturally invoke the people-to-people contact for peaceful co-existence led them to form this NGO. Tina recalls, “It was a unique concept and many challenges had to be overcome to pursue our objective. The initial success and acceptance of our projects gave us the vigour to continue and succeed in our mission. At the same time, we cannot be complacent, and thus, newer programmes are being launched while increasing our reach, year after year.”

Anticipation and prompt action will be your weapons at this juncture and you will manage to use them most effectively! Those in the rat race may get a promotion. You are likely to be bestowed some honour or recognition on the academic front. An enjoyable time is foreseen in your social circle.
Your soft approach and soothing words will help put the mind of someone stressed, at rest. Keep personal differences with someone under wraps. Chance of making good money may come to you, but you will have to seize it. A diet plan adopted recently will suit your system well. A pat on the back is yours at work.
You will be able to manage your finances well. Something that you have started on the health front will help keep you fit. It will be important to clarify your mind regarding issues confusing you on the academic front. You may be in two minds regarding an outing.
Feng Shui tip: Place red and yellow flowers in a bowl on the right side of your work desk to stimulate financial growth.
Feng Shui tip: Place an indoor fountain in your wealth corner to activate chi and attract medical benefits.
A friend’s advice may set you off on a trail to achieve perfect fitness. Long pending work assumes priority now and a co-worker will prove a great help in wrapping it up. Your performance on the academic front is likely to be praised. Monetary condition improves for some. Visiting someplace exciting with family is indicated.
LEO
Feng Shui tip: Crystal ball, if placed on top of phone, encourages more business calls.

Adhere to the given time in an event and you will not go wrong! You will get the financial assistance you had hoped for long for something important. Taking things lightly threatens to tarnish your good academic record. You may be compelled to agree to things that you don’t want to, so take your call.
Success on the professional front is foretold, but this may not be through your efforts alone. Your clarity of vision and steadfastness of purpose will help you on the career front. You may stand to gain by not investing in a scheme that seems lucrative at first, but may not prove to be so later.
Retailers are likely to find the cash register ringing. You will find a willing partner for your daily workouts on the fitness front. Distractions may find your focus wavering on the academic front, so take care. Doing up the house for an impending event is indicated.
Feng Shui tip: In the office always place the fax machine, telephones, and computers in the wealth area.
Feng Shui tip: Arrange tables and chairs in a harmonious manner to allow a smooth flow of chi.
There is a likelihood of your getting swayed by someone’s opinions and carry false impressions. You will find the family most supportive of your endeavours. A task entrusted to you at work may have to be wrapped up this month itself. Be conservative on the financial front to build up your savings.
SAGITTARIUS If you want to take a relationship forward, be clear what all it entails. Something done in partnership will get positive results, but may have an adverse effect on relationship. You may have a selfish interest in helping somebody out on the academic front. Making a home budget may curb your tendency to overspend. Feng Shui tip: At work, never have the main door facing your table as the chi gets obstructed, creating problems. December 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Feng Shui tip: If you own a shop, place the till in your wealth corner.
Feng Shui tip: You should not have any cactus or sharp looking plants in your office, as the chi that passes through them will be fierce and sharp.

A lucky break on the academic front will keep you on a safe wicket. An excellent opportunity for togetherness materialises this time.
A little indiscretion on your part may prove costly, so don’t take chances. Family matters may take precedence over other things this time. Support needed on the social font will be forthcoming. You may take way too long to complete a task at work, but it won’t go against you. Weight watchers may need to stay determined.
This is a perfect time to approach someone for a favour. Despite your hectic schedule and mounting workload, you will manage to find time for yourself. On the career front, this is the time to contemplate on your future course of action. Your ambitious trait is likely to drive you on to success by overcoming all opposition.
Feng Shui tip: Do not place the photocopy machine near the main door, as the heat causes the chi to disperse easily.
Feng Shui tip: Do not place an empty vase next to the main door, as new chi will get sucked into it.
Feng Shui tip: At work, do not choose a room with two doors, because then chi enters through one door and comes out of the other.

MANAGING HAIR LOSS
L
osing your hair is perfectly normal. Both men and women shed up to 100 hair strands a day, but for some women, hair loss is much more serious. The most common type of hair loss can be triggered by life changing events such as moving home, a bereavement or pregnancy. DR. JAGDISH SAKHIYA According to Dr. Jagdish Sakhiya, (MD, SKIN) the number of women asking Sakhiya Skin Clinic for advice about hair loss has doubled over the last 10 years. And there is an increase in younger women (between 18-40 years) who are affected. Most of the time, it is a temporary manifestation of your physical or emotional well-being. What causes hair loss? Hair loss is a skin condition - it is not infectious or
contagious. Hair loss can be mild, where subtle thinning occurs, or a more serious disease that involves total loss of scalp and body hair. The most common causes of hair loss are pregnancy, which stops one to four months after the birth of a baby, poor nutrition, eating disorders, drugs and stress. If nutrient levels are low it will be expressed through the hair. Hair loss represents low mineral status, specifically lack of zinc, selenium, calcium, sodium and potassium. Faddy diets usually result in iron deficiency, as might avoidance of red meat. How can it be treated? The golden rule is the sooner you notice hair loss, seek advice from your family physician that will refer you to a specialist. You may want to support your conventional treatment with complementary medicine and hair transplant. Sakhiya Skin Clinic, contact info@sakhiyaskinclinic.com
