Letters from

SpiceJet customers Humble gesture

Vyne Sheshadri, travelling from Dubai to Mumbai, expressed his gratitude to SpiceJet employees—Poonam Chauhan and Sagar Mahat. Aboard a SpiceJet flight, he observed an unskilled house help who was terribly hungry, but couldn't afford to pay for her meal. He decided to pay anonymously for her meal and requested Sagar to do the needful. Sagar and Poonam gave her the meal and returned the money to Mr. Sheshadri. SpiceJet decided to speak to the man who brought to light the plight of the poor house help. Excerpt from the talk— 1. Your experience with SpiceJet? As far as I can remember I have always felt comfortable flying with SpiceJet and thankfully never had any bad experience. For a low cost airline, you guys are doing a pretty good job and I must confess that SpiceJet has been my choice for an airline.

letter of th moneth

2. What is your take on the inflight crew? The quality of your inflight crew in terms of temperament, attitude and personality has improved. Coming specifically to SG 014, I really admired the presence of mind and patience your crew demonstrated that day. Our flight was delayed for almost an hour and I observed how patiently your crew dealt with the situation. I found Poonam and Sagar go beyond the call of duty. I want to let them know that people always remember small thoughtful things you do. This will increase the positive bias I have towards SpiceJet.

Safety at its best I was travelling on April 3 from Mumbai to Goa with a model of a house. I called on your staff member—Subash—requesting to take care of the model as it was fragile. He immediately checked me in and requested the staff not to leave the package unattended owing to its delicate nature. While boarding, he personally came up to me to reassure that the model was taken care of in the aircraft along with an assurance that the same precaution would be taken on arrival. On arrival at Goa the model was intact. I would like to thank Mr Subash and his team at both ends for carrying out their duties and going out of their way to ensure that the model was delivered like a child travelling unattended. PERFECT IN EVERY WAY You have matured to be the perfect airline that any sensible person will appreciate. But the jewel in your crown is the food you serve. Its hot, fresh and what choices! The food can compete with any international service. No cold sandwiches...what a relief. And those who ushered us after a long tiring day from Mumbai to Ahmedabad were stars. I will remember Sonam, especially... and her spirited helpful nature. Great choice of music. Keep the classic rock flowing and rocking as we fly with you.

For the love of

cricket Cricket is literally in the air! And SunRisers Hyderabad, with its great technique and line up, promises high dose of entertainment. W O R D S | R ohit k handelwal

S 24

o, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is back. No matter how much you criticise it, how much you bemoan it, IPL time and again has shown that its not just about existing in the cricketing ecosystem, but also about throwing everything else on the backseat when the cricket carnival is around.

Once again, there would be no nationalities and no nations against each other. There would be only clubs battling it out during sparkling nights with cheerleaders and fans upping their spirits Once again, TV shows and saas-bahu sagas will disappear on a planet non-existent and the only thing you would hear from even your moms, sisters and wives would be how Shikhar Dhawan’s moustache is better than another player's new haircut. Here's a sneak peek at SunRisers Hyderabad's journey so far.

A great beginning

SunRisers Hyderabad, the new team that entered the fray last year surprised many of us. The debutants of last season made enough news for fans to talk about them. A fortress was built and in a role reversal, the SunRisers

lost just one match at their home ground. The good thing about the SunRisers was that it was not winning because of its bowling or batting. It was mostly because of the team effort. Their bowling, though, deserves some extra praise. In some matches when the batsmen failed to put big runs on the board, Steyn and company would make sure they annihilated the opposition batting; and on others when the opposition team was batting first, the bowlers would rise to the occasion and make sure they did not allow a lot of runs to be scored. Shikhar Dhawan was their main pivot around whom the batting centred. Him and the other batsmen on most occasions gave just enough to Steyn, Amit Mishra

and the surprise of the season Karn Sharma to defend. Sharma and Mishra were perfect foil to Steyn’s early exploits and would create a web of great leg-spin around opposition batsmen on a ground favouring spin.

Warner, to his name, holds the record of scoring back to back 100’s in T20 matches The team, though, struggled away from home and that is one area where they would be looking to improve massively this season. They won just two matches away and could make it because of their

hyderabad beckons

Like always, IPL is a lot more about mind games than just swashbuckling cricket. It will be interesting to see how Dhawan chooses the 11 he wants to play

brilliant home performance. We have seen in the IPL how a team which does very well on its home ground flounders mostly against fancy teams as the tournament progresses into its business end. In its fresh and new avatar under the leadership of a new captain SunRisers aims at reaching the semis first. They are working hard to work and taking baby steps towards the ultimate win is their goal. In the auctions 2014, they were smart and picked players who could win them games, alongside thinking very well how not to go beyond their pocket. Jason Holder at `7.5M and Moises Henriques at base price were victorious wins. Henriques comes from a successful season in Australia and Holder is a real good paceman and an ideal partner for Steyn. Another good buy was Bhuvaneshwar Kumar who we all know, knows how to restrict. With the bowling further strengthening, interesting buys like Aaron Finch, David Warner and Venugopal Rao alongside all-rounder Irrfan Pathan, give a major boost to the batting line-up.

side, which has spent money really wisely, Warner will be looking to kill all opposition from the word go. Warner’s ability to strike the ball clean will send shivers down the spine of all opening bowlers and his brilliant T20 records will make sure he is one of the most discussed players in the opposition dressing room. Warner, to his name, holds the record of scoring back to back 100’s in T20 matches, a format where even broadcasters show the number of 30’s a batsman has made because that is considered a good metric. If he gets going, the southpaw will definitely be the flavour of the Hyderabadi Biryani this IPL.

Alongside his runs, he also became quite a household name because of his twirled moustache. partnership with David Warner as they both would look to puncture all opposition attacks from the beginning. Amit Mishra: Another one from Delhi, Mishra can be called an IPL expert because of his heroics in this tournament. He has always done well in this format and since last two years his form has been phenomenal in the IPL. Last season, he was the highest wicket taker for SunRisers Hyderabad, bagging 21 wickets in 17 games; the year before he picked up 19 wickets from 14 games for the team Deccan Chargers (no more existing). He comes back from a good T20 World Cup and his mates would be expecting no less from him this season.

Darren Sammy: This list of players, to watch out for, could not be complete without naming the most colourful player of the side. Sammy is no more just an all-rounder but could now be also tagged as one of the finest finishers around. He can bowl well, bat punishingly, field brilliantly and lift the team with his extraordinarily likeable antics on the ground. His captaincy made West Indies lift an ICC title after a long time when they beat Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012. Look forward to new celebration styles as well, with him around. You have been appointed as the Captain for SunRisers Hyderabad for the first time. How does it feel? It’s an honour to lead a team which comprises of some of the best Indian and international players. What are your expectations from IPL 2014? From last year we are known as a team and not only as strong individuals, which is very important in any sport. So, looking forward to enhancing this spirit in each player and first qualify for the knock out and then go for the finals. How have you prepared yourself and your team for this year? Our training and practice began in Hyderabad. Taking two to three days off before the match is what I’m looking at, so that we feel fresh and charged up on the ground. The

boys are doing good as well. We are aiming at some specialised training with the normal routine training. We are also looking at some mandatory team dinners for bonding or maybe going to a resort for team bonding and mental relaxation.

What is the strategy you are following to lead your team to the winning trophy? I think it is imperative to move step by step. First, we would aim at reaching the Knock Out and then qualify to be in the top.

Are you making any changes in the team from what it was last year? No significant changes are made this time as our main players remain the same. To make our bowling line up stronger with a spinner and a fast bowler, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma have been brought in. Also, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Venugopal Rao will also give us a good mix in the team. Last year jo thodi kami reh gayi thi, we are trying to fill that gap by getting good people in the team.

Which team is your biggest competitor/threat this year? Each team playing the IPL is very strong and I believe in kab baazi palat jaaye one never knows. It is more about the rhythm and momentum that a team plays in. It is more about how you perform at that very moment when you are on the field.

Darren Sammy is the Vice-Captain of the team. Please comment on the bonding between you both. Sammy and I are very good friends. Sammy brings with him a lot of experience and great potential. I’m sure to learn a great deal from his experience.

The first 20 matches would be held in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi respectively. What is your take on these destinations? I have played in Abu Dhabi earlier and the ground is fantastic. Talking about the destination, I think Dubai would be a great place to hang out as to roam around in India gets a little tough, so going around Dubai would be easier.

And I have worked very hard to be where I am. I have lived up every phase in my life. I can’t say that I wish to go back and undo this or that, even though most of my decisions have been unplanned. That, I can say today that I wouldn’t change any part of myself and that I am very happy with myself can be called my real achievement,” she says.

looking more stunning than she ever did, and when I tell her that, she says with a smile, “I am liking how I am looking right now.” A couple of years ago, her husband Ajay, when asked on a popular chat show about which Bollywood actress he thinks needs a stylist badly, had candidly mentioned his wife’s name. And now that she is being praised by all for her flawless sartorial performance, what does her husband and her daughter have to say? “My daughter loves my current style but my husband just feels that I am taking too much time to get ready these days,” she says laughing. “I think that’s the normal reaction most guys have. I think I have had a few successes, I have had a few disasters, but overall I like the way I look right now.” So how would she define her personal style? “I like simple cuts and cleaner lines, but I like adding a bit of funk to whatever I wear. Sometimes I feel, underneath, maybe I am a Goth chic...” Wow! That’s not a style we associate Kajol with. But then that’s Kajol for you, instinctive and impulsive. She reveals that she is a big fan of the 50s style. The decade has inspired her, attracted her, even floored her. Capturing a

hero's life

In conversation with director Sandeep A Varma we find out what it takes to encapsulate a real time hero's life on screen. W ords | N iti k a B a j payee Jha

torytelling is an art and only a few master it. One such maestro is Sandeep A Varma, who started off as a creative guy and eventually went on to direct a film—on a subject close to his heart. After spending years in advertising, Varma decided to narrate the saga

of an honest government employee, Manjunath Shanmugam. In the course, he directed his film titled as Manjunath—Idiot tha saala.

Manjunath is Varma's directorial debut and is about two hours long

Set in a remote, nondescript town in Uttar Pradesh called Lakhimpur Kheri, the film highlights the struggle of a 27-year-old government employee Manjunath, who, for taking a strong stand against the oil mafia, was killed without mercy. Here's an excerpt from the interview—

Why did you choose to direct a film and that too on a non-glamorous real life story? I was comfortably working for an ad agency, all was rosy and there was nothing I could complain about. One day, Anjali Mulathi— the face behind the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust—and I were having a discussion; that's when I asked the reason that makes her so passionate about running the trust. Though I knew Manju's story, I heard it again from her. This time when she narrated the story, there was something about it that I could not ignore. Manju's story started growing on me and I spent hours and hours reading and learning about him. In today's era, it is rare to come across an average individual who would take a strong stand against the corrupt in the system and sacrifice his life in the process. So, was Manjunath's story engaging enough to be adapted into a film? While I was carrying out my research on Manju, I went to his college— IIM Lucknow—and met his friends. In the process of meeting people associated with him, I got to know that he enjoyed meeting people and would always stand up for what he believed was correct. He was not from a well-to-do family, yet had a set of principles and always used to abide by them. He also liked interacting with people.

The film sends out a positive message of professional integrity Why did you decide to make a film on his life? Manju was warned several times for taking a strong stand against the corrupt. But, for a man driven by his principles, he knew what he was getting into. He fought for what he thought was right and that caught my attention. His story, his guts, his endurance and patience level drew me towards his persona. Then, I met his parents, his associates, friends and all. They always had positive things to talk about him. I think knowing that he lived by his principles, that was reason enough for me to capture his life on screen.

Please elaborate on the struggle you faced while planning the movie Initial years went in research, I did not sleep for more than a couple of hours each day. Directing a film requires a lot of planning and it also requires time and patience. It has been a tough ride, but all's well that ends well. You have produced the film too, didn't you get sponsors? I have directed the film and scripted it too. I have been working on this project for almost five years now. The research took time and in the process, a lot of money was spent. I did approach many production houses for funding, but owing to strange demands, nothing worked out. Then NFDC and Viacom18 came forward I wanted to make the movie as real as possible.

industry support for manjunath? Manjunath's mother is played by Seema Biswas while the main trustee's role is played by Gireesh Sahdev. The character of Anjali is enacted by Divya Dutta. These brilliant actors agreed to work on Manjunath at a very low May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

Get inspired by a ‘modern Gandhi’

The story of Manjunath’s life is simple yet outstanding. Very few people in this world today can display the courage he had.

W ords | S ayanti B aner j ee

anjunath Shanmugam comes across as a ‘Gandhi’ in this modern world that otherwise has corruption creeping into every aspect of it. This film is the true story of a 27-year-old youth, who is a graduate from the Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow. Manjunath joins Indian Oil Corporation Limited after passing out from IIM. While he is posted at Lakhimpur Kheri, a remote district in rural Uttar Pradesh, he comes face to face with the fuel scam that was affecting the poor people severely. The fearful reality that tears him apart is that the kerosene that came from the ration shops was being mixed with diesel. It is actually poor people’s kerosene and is now the cause of pollution due to the burning of adulterated fuel. His voice against the big-shots involved in this business make him standout. Even his friends turn a deaf ear towards him. So, his ‘madness’ is actually his intense desire to do something better for the society and not just

turn a blind eye to the corruption that is happening, like most of his peers.

Manjunath came from a middle-class south Indian family Manjunath hails from a middleclass south Indian family yet the proposal of `50,000 lakhs does not change his focus. His mother tries to use her emotions to bring him back home and help her son stay away from the bottomless pit that he is about to get into. But nothing holds him back and he goes on to fight

the corrupt people till his death. The interaction of Manju’s soul, after his death with the villain Golu Goyal, is very intense and meaningful. There is a lot of sarcasm that puts up a lot of questions at the social front. Though Manju loses his life, he wins the faith of his friends, batchmates and relatives as well as his family, in what he believed as a noble cause. With a rather non-glamorous set- up, the cast beautifully brings out the raw emotions and frustrations of the modern society that are still quite primitive. Overall, this movie actually comes across as a different ‘feel good’ experience and a must watch for all.

The sheer crunch, followed by the sweet juice pasting every corner of your palate and your senses, is enough to catapult the cheeriness back in your life. Little wonder, that is every Sommelier’s best friend. Just add mint, and the boring mojito becomes a sexy mistress. Ancient texts speak of its wide use right from it being used as a teeth whitener to sweetening tea to even being used as the first body and room spray!

In fact, Elisabeth Lambert Ortiz's book, Encyclopedia of Herbs, Spices & Flavorings, talks about more than 600 varieties of mint that have been discovered, cultivated and used over the years. After all, which other herb smells like spring and tastes like summer ADDICTION SINCE AGES

The famous julep, one of the more baffling beverages ever concocted, stands testimony to the versatility of this herb. The best recipe calls for ceremoniously mixing the mint with lots of sugar and ice in a special iced silver cup, then throwing away the cup and drinking the Bourbon.

Ancient Egyptians used it to cure digestive upsets and as a breath freshener. In medieval times, when baths were few and far between, mint was a strewing herb, with armloads of it thrown on floors. The ritual of after-dinner mints carries onto this day. Known for its antispasmodic and calmative properties,

Mint is an intrinsic part of the Middle Eastern dishes, like their sweet after-dinner tea and the classic tabbouleh salad. Indians still use it in everything— from raita to chutney to curries. The Brits, of course, are famous for their fabled mint sauce, which is a mix of finely chopped leaves in the barest bit of liquid made from sugar dissolved in vinegar and hot water—and is generously dribbled onto a slice of classic, garlicky roast lamb, or over a grilled chop.

Dried mint is most often employed in savoury dishes, because of the subtle, smoky flavour. A prominent feature in Middle Eastern dishes like sambousek and tabbouleh, it is an excellent base for most kebabs. In Mexico, mint is added to the ground meat mixture used to make albondigas. Peppermint is the most popular mint used in desserts, and marries well with dark chocolate. It’s the menthol that gives mint flavoured desserts the ‘icy’ feel.

lemon and green tea variants a few years ago when people took to sipping these in addition to their regular chai. But once the taste buds opened up, there was no looking back. And thus, herbal teas, floral teas, invaded the market. Today, a plethora of unusual flavours can be seen making their way into homes from store shelves. Vikas Sharma, Director F&B, Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai agrees. In India, we are now moving away from the traditional “chai” which is made at home by steeping the tea leaves in boiling water along with spices and milk are now taking our tea rather seriously.

Flavoured is Favoured

With palates evolving, speciality teas are now the ‘in’ thing. People have taken to drinking flavoured

teas. Earl Grey has always been the most sought after, lightly flavoured tea but now, the repertoire has expanded. Flavoured teas are created by adding fruits, spices, flowers or natural flavours to black, oolong or green teas depending on the flavours that complement the tea. Flavours like vanilla, orange, passion fruit or berries are very popular. Chef Kayomarz Bharucha, Executive Chef, The Leela Goa attributes their popularity to the experimental nature of people. Fruit flavoured teas have given a good twist to tea drinkers as people can now sip their tea with their preferred fruit flavours when they are not relishing their regular tea. Vikas Sharma feels that fruit flavoured teas are easy to savour, they are appealing and besides that they taste just great. It is close

to enjoying on your favourite fruit steeped in your cup of tea.

Green is the new mantra

Taste apart, health is an important factor and that’s why green tea has rapidly caught the fancy of urban India. Consumed sans milk, green tea offers a relaxing affect and has oodles of health benefits. Radhika of Radhika’s Fine Teas, on the contrary, quips, “Palates were always ready, only people were not aware.” Exposure and awareness have fuelled this craving. Customers are now well- informed. Thus, people now appreciate fine teas and handcrafted teas. Sharma opines that worldwide travel and easy access to several sprawling star hotels have a major role to play in familiarising us with varieties of teas and drinking

customs or habits. Herbal teas or “bush” teas are caffeine-free and are well-known for their traditional native uses. But when choosing a herbal tea, make sure you pick the right one. Herbal teas on the other hand, such as thyme, peppermint and ginger have greater therapeutic virtues.

And while the bowler hats and scones maybe missing from the quintessentially English beverage, tea rooms are becoming fashionable now. Kolkata always had them, but now other cities too are following suit. Bengaluru has Infinitea, Mumbai the Cha bar and Tea centre, while New Delhi boasts of Elma’s and Passionmy cup of tea. Yautcha in Mumbai is famed for its tea and dim sums; as is The Leela Goa for its English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Classic Assam, Earl Grey, Green Tea and Chamomile. Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai is a step ahead, they even serve exotic teas like Rooibus, Pu-erh and Silver needles. The rising fame of tea is not surprising. After all, drinking tea helps combine two of the best ways of coping with stress in today’s fast paced lifestyle socialising with friends and family. Add to that the fetish for good health and the result is, fancy teas. For a nation that was, in the past few years, obsessed with latte, tea drinking reaching new heights spells good news. Watches no longer are just meant to tell the time. Make a statement with innovative breakthroughs in the watch world. W ords | G uneet O beroi

I

t is said, “When it comes to modern watches, the more complicated and the more technically innovative, the better.” Even though it isn't agreed by everyone, but we have to admit that, these days, we don’t just look at watches to tell time, we look at them to make a statement. We look for ingenuity and uniqueness in each timepiece.

In primary school you learnt to read time from a dial with an hour hand, minute hand and second hand. You probably were able to read it even earlier using a digital watch

But in today's era of haute horlogerie and ‘gadget’ watches, there are many more innovative ways to display time. Here are some mind-bending watches—totally wild timepieces that will make you look twice to see what time it is. These small works of art, which range from affordable to outof-this-world expensive, are the ultimate conversation starters.

Unique & stylish Seiko WatchES India has launched the world’s first GPS solar watch – Astron. The new Astron is an analog, solarpowered watch that receives GPS satellite signals and adjusts to the precise local time anywhere on Earth. It recognizes all 39 time zones. It takes six seconds or a little more for the time to self-correct and 30 seconds or a little more for the time zone, and the adjustment takes place whether you are stationary or on the move. Seiko Astron’s perpetual calendar is correct until February, 2100. The watch takes power from all kinds of light and never needs a battery change. Price: `1.3 – 2.55 lakhs

For females, who care about ecology and pure elegance, the Tissot T-Touch Lady Solar is the answer. The ample solar panel hides without trace behind the dial, leaving space for an easily readable digital screen to display activated information. The full functionality spectrum embraces an altimeter, meteo function, compass,

In the fast

lanes The fight for supremacy in the compact SUV segment hots up this season. Read on to know more. W ords | A rup D as

F 88

rom being a virtual non-existent segment, the compact SUV has become the most active sector in the automobile market. Once considered the undisputed king of the segment, Renault's Duster is now trying to desperately make a comeback, while the smaller Ford EcoSport has become the toast of the season. To make matters worse for the French car maker, its Japanese partner, Nissan, has taken out a better lookalike, the Terrano. With Terrano's launch, it would be worthwhile to compare the crossovers on the road. We look at how the trio of Terrano, Duster and EcoSport fare against each other.

Many may ask why the EcoSport is included in this comparison since it belongs to a lower price segment. The truth is the Ford is both a sedan and a compact SUV killer View from the roadside

One must remember that none of these vehicles is a hardcore 4x4 off-roader. Their roughest terrain is the concrete jungle of the cities. Therefore, looks have to impress. Dimensionally, there is no difference between the Duster and the Terrano, but the latter definitely looks more imposing with the typical V-shaped front grill and a prominent bonnet crest. The sharp edges of the Terrano

make it come across as lot more contemporary than the Duster's broad and bland curves. No doubt, it may look Plain Jane compared to the Nissan vehicle, but it still has a muscular side profile that gives it solid SUV looks. The Terrano, like the Duster, has protective underbody plates in the front and rear, but the tail lamps are an extended version of the Renault's, though they stand out for being bigger and eyecatching. The EcoSport can't be mistaken for any other car. This is where it makes the owner feel it is a oneof-a-kind car. There is no other vehicle in this segment that looks more modern and inviting. It has a truer SUV look with the wheel mounted on the rear door, but

The Terrano looks better with wood finish and chrome touches Fiesta sedan. This engine is less powerful than the Duster and Terrano, but it fulfils its duties by being responsive inside of 1500 rpm, making it, therefore, eminently comfortable to drive in the city. But the problem starts with long drives, where it disappointingly runs out of steam. The 5-speed gearbox is slick and precise. The steering wheel is responsive and provides good feedback, but it would have been better to have some more weight. Do go easy on broken roads as the suspensions are on the stiffer side and let you feel the bumps. The EcoSport easily has the best aesthetics. The design of the centre console, the black-silver interior combination and unending list of features will make any other vehicle look old and less appealing. Also, the Ford has many practical cubby holes for storage and holders for cups and bottles, something that is missing in both the Duster and Terrano. It also

has steering wheel-mounted audio controls, unlike the Duster, which has them behind the steering wheel, and the Terrano, which has them on the console itself. Though, the build quality of the Renault-Nissan pair is solid, the Terrano looks better with wood finish and chrome touches. Apart from this, both have virtually the same basic-looking cabin spaces.

To each his own

The Duster and Terrano have a smoother and more powerful engine than the EcoSport, provide better ride quality, a better torque quality and offer ample boot space. Though they are bigger in size than the Ford, they are all 5-seaters and the choice could come down to how much boot space the buyer requires. Design-wise, the EcoSport wins hands down, with the Terrano steamrolling over its French cousin. The technologically advanced Ford has 265 sales and service outlets in 142 cities across India, compared to Nissan's 107 centres in over 30 locations and Renault's 142 dealers and 85 service centres. So even the service advantage goes to the Blue Oval. As for value for money, the EcoSport offers a lot more for what it's worth. However, for a brilliant ride and linear power, the Terrano is our unambiguous choice.

Although street art may seem like a new phenomenon in India, it has actually been around for ages. Artist Harshvardhan Kadam, whose street name is inkbrushme, nurtures a desire to paint the mysteries of mind and the cosmos, mythological tales and mystical creatures on empty walls. “What folk artists painted in India ages ago remain my most favourite works of public art. It features pure expressions of stories and life back then,” he states. Kadam has thus started a project called Mythopolis that brings out contextually relevant stories from our rich mythology in a public space. He travels across India to paint these stories.

Apart from creating street art, the festival also included workshops on graffiti, stencil and sign paintings, with one workshop at the Tihar Jail with 15 inmates! Curated walks were organised around the involved neighbourhoods and a few EasyCabs were also painted by artists.

What’s Next

When approached to participate in the festival, Delhi artist Harsh Raman felt that, “There was a need to create May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

an event where the entire street art+graffiti community could come together and change the landscape of the boring urban jungles that we live in”. Raman wishes “India to be the mecca of legal street art in the world”. “Graffiti is usually seen with a bad eye in most of the world. But my comrades and I would like to make it a positive and colourful movement here” he shares. Kadam, on the other hand, feels that creating awareness about street art is necessary among the general classes and investors, who would be keen to invest in the beautification of their surroundings. “I'm investing a lot of time and energy to connect these two extreme dots,” he asserts. The goal of St.Art Delhi team was and still is to engage all the levels of the society under the sign of art and build a platform for the worldwide Street Art in India. The next street art festival is being planned at Mumbai. Going by the popularity and success of the first round, and after crossing the hurdles, we’re sure that it’s only going to become bigger and better.

Coming of Age

With the passing of each year, the quality of movies in the Indian film industry is moving a notch up towards maturity. W ords | S iddharth M Joshi

ndian films have playfully had a dominant role in establishing Indian stereotypes at home and abroad. And that’s how stereotypes work. Once created, it takes a long time breaking them. But fortunately, they are no more just melodramatic acting and singing, and clichéd story-lines. They have come a long way and constructed a niche for themselves; a space so prominent that even the

West is looking eastward to extend accolades.

Here is a list of top 10 offbeat Indian movies that have contributed to Bollywood’s image make-over by amazing stories/concepts and some incredible acting

1. Black Friday (2004):

Hinged on S Hussain Zaidi’s book Black Friday—The Story of Bombay Bomb Blasts, the film shares the story of the notorious Mumbai bomb blasts of 1993 that killed hundreds of people. In the lines of a documentary-film, it is marked with tightly held direction and power packed acting. A stay was levied on the movie on the day of its release, and it was re-released two years

threadbare budgeted comedy of confusions gave the Indian cinema a second league of comedians who based their humour on real life acting and dialogues, rather than mere buffoonery. The trio of Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and Rajat Kapoor went on to feature in similar short budget comedies and serious films like Pappu Can't Dance Saala

Vicky Donor (2012): This movie proves that the taboo topics are no longer taboos and are praised by general audience, besides just the intellectual audience and critics. The movie is based on the delicate theme of sperm donation and infertility in India, and how a young man earns his extra bucks by doling out his sperms and actually touching the lives of people in need. 9. Bombay Talkies (2013):

This portmanteau of films is a reservoir of surprises and charm. Four directors, to pay tribute to Indian Films, put up a magnificent exhibition of sheer art. Karan Johar proves that he is more than mere feel good family dramas in a subtle, sensitive and peeping-out-of-thecloset mature film, Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh. Nawazuddin Siddiqui gives a memorable performance in Dibakar Banerjee’s Star. Zoya Akhtar directs young kids in her heartwarming movie Sheila ki Jawani. And Anurag Kashyap strikes a chord of irony in his celluloid tribute to Amitabh Bachchan, Murabba.

10. Highway (2014): Superscribed with the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, where the kidnapped girl falls in love with her kidnapper and develops a deep attachment with him, this brilliant piece of cinematographic rendering by Imtiaz Ali reminds of the postmodern absurdity with overlapping concepts of good and bad. Randeep Hooda and the surprise package, Alia Bhatt form a fresh new line of actors who can act in layers. The movie is based on an episode of an old ZEE TV production Rishtey, which was also directed by Imtiaz Ali himself.

Toy Tales

Engage your child's senses and spark his imagination with the help of toys as these can actually benefit him in many ways. W ords | N ina D inshaw

I

f your child has been missing his smile, and you would like to bring it back then there is a time-tested solution, and we call it a toy. From a four-month-old baby to a 15-year-old, toys have hardly ever failed to bring happiness on a child's face. When you try snapping your fingers or clapping your hands in front of a baby, you may probably get a wry smile. But the moment you flash a colourful toy, his face

lights up. There is no denying that playtime is the most important part of childhood and toys definitely have a key role to play.

If used effectively, toys serve as facilitators for parents on their mission to assist their child’s development

“As children grow, their mental and physical requirements change and so do their requirements for toys. Understanding this, there are more than 50 categories of toys for different ages available today. toys and its benefits

Action is the foundational key to all success One of the common and most important characteristics of toys is that they provide a platform for children to express and apply.

Books have limitations in terms of providing experimentation possibilities. "Toys make subjects more interesting for the child by offering them participation, manipulation and experimentation. They make learning interesting and interactive,” adds Makhija. When you take the free will out of education, that turns it into schooling Yet, another important attribute of toys is that they are a voluntary indulgence for children. For children, toys equal amusement and enjoyment. Toys are well accepted by them and children do not need

I hear and forget, I see and remember. I do and understand. The above-mentioned attributes, directly lead to the third benefit, i.e. higher impact and better retention. “The learning in school is driven by a set curriculum mostly through books. Educational toys and games provide a platform where learning is retained more strongly as it is experienced through fun and play thus expanding their mental abilities. Various puzzles and board games designed for particular subjects or classics like tangrams and pentominoes are two examples of toys that aid teaching or learning,” opines Makhija.

All children are artists. How to remain artists once they grow up. Art and craft sets enable the child to get a first-time hands on opportunity for personal expression. An art and craft activity such as finger painting and creating simple mosaic pictures gives the child a sense of achievement and creativity while enhancing their motor abilities. “Clay, sand, origami, quilling, fabric art, tie and die are all different media that help children not only with artistic skills but also act as stress busters,” adds Makhija. Children are little people Not only do toys prove to be companions for children, they also encourage group plays, thus satisfying the natural need

for friends and companionship. Children get into conversations with friends and they best learn languages while trying to express themselves. Books are essential for knowledge, facts and codes of conduct. "However, its play that can effectively establish feelings of friendship, community, belonging and trust,” opines Makhija. The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence Toys help a child to think. If you give a puzzle set of farm animals or the alphabets, kids invariably put on their thinking caps and try

their best to solve the puzzle. A toddler’s emerging fine motor skills are put to test when playing with a stacking toy, finger painting, engaging in sand art, mosaic art or paper quilling. These actions help enhance a child’s motor skills at early ages. “Toys invite children to use their imagination and create. An empty cardboard box in a child’s hand can soon turn into a train, house or a garage. Toys facilitate children’s natural desire to pretend and play by providing props. They are known to help in awakening their creativeness and imagination."

nobody to turn to since 1995. “The charity was founded by David Maidment, formerly Head of Safety with British Rail. He experienced the woes of children struggling to survive on the platforms of India whilst travelling and decided to see what he could do to help. Realising that no one was working with them when they arrive on the platform, Railway Children was borne to intervene at the earliest opportunity and limit the dangers they face from abuse and exploitation,” said Wendy Brawn, International Liaison Officer at Railway Children.

Railway Children works with local stakeholders “David witnessed a little girl, about seven years old, begging on a platform. She started to whip herself to elicit sympathy. He realised that she was being exploited by adults to earn money for them. He came back to the UK and pledged to try and help children like this little girl. thousands of pounds every year to support children in India, East Africa and the UK,” added Brawn. “We fight for vulnerable children who live alone and at risk on the streets, where they suffer abuse and exploitation. In the UK, society often denies their existence and in other countries, like India, the problem is so prevalent that it has become ‘normal’,” she said. “We race to reach children as soon as they arrive on the streets and intervene before an abuser can. Our pioneering work enables us to get to street children before the streets get to them. We do this through our three-step change agenda, which, first of all, meets the immediate needs of the children,” added Brawn. Secondly, efforts are made

to shift perception in the local context. Railway Children works with local stakeholders to ensure that the children are not viewed as commodities to be abused and exploited – but as children in need of care and protection. Lastly, the charity tried to hold governments to account. “If we are to see a long-term, sustainable change for the children with whom we work, we must influence key decision makers, ensuring that provisions for safeguarding children are made within their policies and budgets,” said Brawn. With an estimated 11 million children living on the streets, India has the highest number of vulnerable children in the world, and the second largest rail network, allowing children to travel vast

distances across the country. Railway Children currently works with 12 partners in eight states of India. Its work has evolved and incorporates learning from programmes developed over the past 17 years. The partners of the charity are based in West Bengal (Sealdah, New Jalpaiguri, Malda, Asansol), Madhya Pradesh (Itarsi), Delhi, Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow), Bihar (Patna), Maharashtra (Mumbai and Thane), Andhra Pradesh (Tirupati) and Tamil Nadu (Chennai). “India has many policies, legislations and schemes for child rights protection, but implementing them effectively takes time. We collaborate with civil societies, the government and communities to ensure effective implementation of these policies and legislations, which will create a safety net for thousands of children who feel they have no one to turn to and nowhere safe to go,” said Navin Sellaraju, Railway Children’s Country Director in India. The charity’s work with its partner Ehsaas in Lucknow has created what has been called the first ‘childfriendly’ station in India. This means that all local stakeholders are working together to signpost new arrivals to a place of safety, provided by Ehsaas. They also operate a child assistance

booth and have posters and station announcements ensuring children know how to find safe people and safe places to turn to. Selling of bottles, glue and other drugs, and prostitution has been banned from the station. This model is being replicated by the charity’s partners in Kolkata.

Railway Children currently works with 12 partners in eight states of India Right now, thousands of children on the streets in India are making decisions that can shape their whole futures – and even save their lives. Some are so hungry that they take food from strangers and get lured into a life of slavery. Some decide to trust a kind-looking woman, only to be forced into prostitution. The dangers are many, and the adults who abuse them are all too persuasive. The key deciding factor in these children’s lives is early intervention. Getting to the children before the streets do is key to all of Railway Children’s work. Eight-year-old Guddi is a

good example of this. Guddi arrived at Lucknow station with her little brother and only a handful of possessions. Their parents had died, and the relatives who were meant to look after them just didn’t care. Out of desperation, they boarded a train to the nearest city and ended up in Lucknow, alone and incredibly vulnerable. Fortunately, Ehsaas’ outreach worker Sanoj got to them first. He looked out for them, slowly gained their trust, and made sure they didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Now, Guddi and her brother are safe, happy and hopeful – as children should be. Sanoj once lived on the streets himself. His experience means that he knows what children are going through, and his training means he can support them as they find an alternative to a life of desperation, abuse and neglect. Outreach workers such as Sanoj can cut through this mistrust, because they know how to reach out and connect with street children – they can pre-empt situations and know the objections and fears of the children. Railway Children’s work also seeks to engage local stakeholders and demonstrate effective solutions to government departments. For example, working with the Railway Protection Force to train officers in child rights, and the Juvenile Justice Act ensures a force sympathetic to the needs of children alone and at risk, and equip them to protect and care for them. Some of the work in India is funded by British charity Comic Relief and other family trusts and foundations. Over the next 10 years, Railway Children will be seeking to grow its partnerships to 20 and will also increase the states in which it works, focussing where there is the greatest need and where it can have the greatest impact. Donations from the general public in the UK has helped Railway Children to reach out to more children.

Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima— the most important of all the Buddhist festivals—is considered the most auspicious of all the days in the year, celebrates the birth of Gautam Buddha in 563 BC. The festival commemorates Buddha's enlightenment and death. The festival is generally observed by lighting oil lamps before the image of the Buddha, and devotees recite prayers or read from the Buddhist

scriptures and worship the statue of Buddha with slight variations across different places. Meditation and offerings of flowers, silk scarves, incense and fruits are also part of the worship rituals. Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh are, in particular, known for the Buddha Jayanti celebrations which are held in these two cities. Bodh Gaya is the place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment. The Mahabodhi Temple is decorated

with colourful prayer flags and flowers. Sarnath is the place where the Buddha, after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya taught his learning to the followers. A lot of visitors from around the world come to these places to participate in and celebrate the festival. North East of India happens to be the most sought after destination during summers. Small but immensely beautiful hill state of Nagaland comes alive with the Motasu Mong festival—a time for much rejoicing, feasting, dancing, singing and merry-making. A traditional festival of the Ao tribe, Moatsu-Mong originally stretched over six days, but the modern abbreviated version now is held for three days. Traditionally, Moatsu Mong was celebrated only after the biggest and the most timeconsuming tasks of the community were completed—the sowing of grains, the cleaning of village ponds and the construction and repair of

houses. The days leading up to the festival are, even today, a period of hectic activity. Homes are cleaned and decorated; rice beer is brewed and animals are fattened for the inevitable feast. For the three days of Moatsu Mong, there is much rejoicing, singing and dancing even as delegations go from one village to the next, bearing gifts; feasts are held, and eulogies are sung in praise of traditional heroes. Promoted by Nagaland Tourism as a national event, Chuchuyimlang village is the main showcase for the celebrationsa great place for visitors from across the country and abroad to get a ringside view of Naga life. When: First week of May Where: Nagaland

and during Carnival time, the entire complex comes alive with performances of traditional Sikkimese dances, films on tourism, exhibitions of local crafts. Release Date: May 1 Cast: Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Emma Stone, Sally Field Director: Marc Webb Delamarre The Amazing SpiderMan 2 (3D) There is something about the Spider-Man that keeps the audience of any age, totally gripped. If one takes a close note, what helps one to connect with the story is that Peter Parker’s battle has made him juggle between the ordinary obligations and the extraordinary responsibilities of the larger-thanlife persona of Spider-Man.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter enjoys the highs of swinging between skyscrapers, or spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone), but the lows of being Spider-Man creeps in as well. The need to protect fellow New Yorkers from the villains who threaten the city, is a humongous task in itself. So, this sequel to the successful movie of 2012, returns with more thrills and power packed action sequences to watch out for!

Almost there are courses on every facet of human activities such as sports, photography, nature studies and also Yoga. Observing that India has made a good improvement on the enrolment in higher

education, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday, said however, more had to be done in this regard, as countries like the US and Germany were far ahead in number. He said that enrolment ratio has increased from point six per cent to seven per cent but, we still have to keep in mind that India was still behind nations like Germany and the US, whose enrolment ratios stood at 27 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. A differentiated threetiered university system – where each tier has a distinct strategic objective – has enabled universities to build on their strengths and cater across different categories of educational needs. Quality education

Indian professionals are considered among the best in the world and are in great demand. This signifies the inherent strength of Indian education system. Some people may find it difficult to believe India’s growth story in education sector. Until recent times, most people in India were of the mind set that “for gaining quality education, you need to May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

with all our heart

Dear Customer, As you will see in the fold out cover of this magazine, our new tagline is “With All Our Heart”. We picked this tagline because it captures our spirit—whatever we do, we do it with all our heart. Our commitment to customers is also with all our heart. Last week, we received this email from a customer. Not our customer on this occasion, but a customer nevertheless. Here is the letter: “Dear SpiceJet Customer Service

team, I was travelling from Delhi to Mumbai on an early morning flight (on another airline) with my parents. While checking in, I asked (the other airline’s) staff for assistance for my mother as she cannot walk or stand for long. The lady on the counter said yes sir will do the needful. When I approached the boarding gate for help, I was told that I need to wait. And despite waiting for 20 minutes no one came to me. On the nearby gate a gentleman was observing my tiff, he came to me and asked, “Sir can I help you?” I was so angry that I did not realise who he was and where he was from. I narrated my problem to him, he told me to wait a few minutes. Within 5 minutes he returned to me and said Sir I have arranged everything for you. He arranged assistance for my mother and helped us in getting boarded on priority with optimum care as I had expected. While I was talking to him, I saw his ID card and it was mentioned SpiceJet staff. I asked him you are from SpiceJet, and then also you are helping me? He, very politely, said to me that “Sir for us it is customer first.” I was so touched by the hospitality offered by him to me. I asked him that I want to give feedback on your service and he, with a smile again said Sir, fly with SpiceJet next time.”

Ankur, well done! You capture what all 5,600 of us in the SpiceJet family aspire and stand for. Customer service straight from the heart, regardless of whose customer it is! In other news, we are thrilled to partner again with the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) for this year’s IPL cricket tournament. SRH and SpiceJet have some genes in common, among them are passion, commitment, warmth, and a can-do attitude, as well as the ability and willingness to challenge the status quo, to innovate and to surprise. Our crew had a fantastic time doing the photo shoot with the SRH team for this magazine cover, and we wish Shikhar Dhawan and the team the very best in this year’s IPL. Last but not the least, this month marks the start of a new partnership between SpiceJet and TajSATS-Café Coffee Day, India’s premier inflight catering providers. TajSATS-CCD will handle all of SpiceJet’s catering systemwide, and you will soon be enjoying even more delicious ‘Hot Meals served with Warm Smiles’, along with a wide range of beverages and snacks, served with even more style and grace by our wonderful and caring cabin crew, the best in the Indian skies today.

For Amit Kumar, carving a niche at his work is the major driving force.

Name: Amit Kumar Designation: Project Leader, Information Technology Current Role: Taking care of Commercial Systems for SpiceJet

178

I have been a part of the SpiceJet family since September 2012 and it has been an amazing ride. What makes it exciting is the dynamic nature of our business and the opportunity to enhance my skills to meet the challenges.

Your responsibilities at present? I am responsible for managing IT related aspects of all Commercial projects. I am also managing development of applications that automate internal processes and operations.

Which is your favourite SpiceJet destination? My favourite SpiceJet destination is Dubai as it makes for a great short break for shopping, partying, sunbathing, fine dining and sporting events.

What is it that excites you about your role in the aviation industry? I am a travel connoisseur and hence my passion blends perfectly with the aviation Industry. The industry is evolving and with new business models, it is interesting to use technology to implement the models. The challenging work and the intellectual freedom to execute the task at hand, together make work life exciting and fulfilling.

How do you manage your life along with work? I strongly believe that one should maintain a balance between his professional and personal life. I always try to wrap up my work within the stipulated time frame and ensure that I spend some quality time with my family and friends. I appreciate my family as they always support me in case I need to work on projects at odd hours.

What about the challenges? Managing IT development for an airline was a new experience for me. Managing internal stakeholder expectations while servicing external customers through various channels is the most fundamental challenge I face. Pressure is huge, but working on multiple IT projects for various customers, in parallel and managing small SWOT teams, helped me immensely.

Family time

I belong to a middle class family, there are seven members in my family—my wife, my parents, two younger brothers and a sister-inlaw. Mine is a very religious family and we value our culture. I strongly believe that my family May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

SpiceJet now offers simpler fares

In an attempt to simplify ticket pricing, SpiceJet has merged the basic fare and fuel component surcharge to have one consolidated base fare. With this move, the airline has not only eradicated the concept of a separate fuel surcharge, but has also made pricing and fare displays simpler. To make the ticket booking process easier for its passengers, a statement released by SpiceJet said, “Ticket pricing and fare displays have been made simpler and more transparent by removal of the fuel surcharge add-on from all of its pricing, and consolidating it as part of the base fare. Going forward, the fare displayed will be what you see is what you pay.”

market matters

Expert from the Revenue Management team shares all that makes the department a rather important one at SpiceJet.

W

hen you travel by an airline, hardly its functionalities catch your attention. Personnel from various departments work in sync and make sure your journey is a comfortable one. One such department is Revenue Management, which happens to be an integral part of an airline business. Revenue Management is an imperative part of the airline's Commercial team, however, it is a common belief that it is sheltered under the Finance umbrella.

In layman’s terms, we, the Revenue Management people are 'the money-in guys'. Those who got a chance to read the April edition of Spiceroute, are aware of our colleagues in the Network Planning team and their role Once they, the Network Planning team, are done with their network analysis that involves things like—where to fly, when to fly, frequency of the flights etc— the ball comes to the court of the Revenue Management team.

Research at large

Once the flights are loaded for sale in the system, the Revenue Management team does the inventory planning and also the pricing. Various factors are considered during allocating

inventory, such as historic performance of the flights, seasonality, day of week, time of departure, apart from other factors if you are a price sensitive traveller and are not time sensitive the best time to travel for you, your family and friends is in the lean season.

Various factors are considered during allocating inventory To drill it down further, you are more likely to get a cheaper ticket

on a flight in the mid-week on a mid-day departure or even on an early morning, like a 5 AM departure or a red eye 11 PM departure.

Marketing initiatives

You may be intrigued as to why and how any airline would sell its services below its cost? This is a global low-cost airline practice. We usually do not have huge marketing budget and have to get a big impact on the minimum spend. For example, our recent `1 base fare promo created a stir in the market and stimulated sales that came

mostly from the first time travellers, converting even those passengers to fly who would normally take the bus or train for their joruney. Are we then diluting our own revenues by adopting a strategy like this? The answer is No, we are not fully booked on all flights all year round. We do have a lot of historic data and can forecast low demand flights scientifically and park more of these really low fares on flights that are less likely to go full. Revenue Management also proactively drives promotions. We look at flights way in advance and

Same goes for the same day return options—say on a peak 6 pm flight, you have to pay a premium. Like all low-cost airline pricing practiceS globally, pricing at spicejet too is purely based on demand and supply. If the demand exceeds supply (our own and competitor airlines) then the price of a ticket is likely to go up and vice versa. You are likely to get a great deal, even way lower than our costs at times on weak flights.

push the low demand flights with attractive deals. Best time to buy an airline ticket for your personal travel and to travel with friends and family is when we have these attractive promotions. Your travel cost can be cut down close to 50 per cent. As the airline ticket component is generally the highest of your total travel cost, more savings here mean you get to stay in a better hotel or simply have more for shopping and spare cash for other activities that may fancy you.

We are impacted by the uncontrollables like hike in fuel prices and natural disasters Business strategy

Like all businesses, sometimes things don’t go as per the planning for us as an airline. We are impacted by almost all uncontrollable factors by us, like hike in fuel prices, natural disasters, May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

weather, economic slowdown etc. People travel lesser than they usually do during such times, but as an airline we can’t have planes sitting on ground or flying only with half occupancy or lesser. Therefore, we periodically come up with offers to stimulate demand. So, next time you see a deal on a flight when you have already bought a ticket at regular price you know the reason why and we expect your understanding. This is no different to any retail deals on commodities at any super or a hyper market. Today, you may buy a detergent at `200 a pack and two days later you may get two packs for the same price. Our service delivery is the best DEAL at the time of purchase. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of your flight. Do send a cheer to a bunch of enthusiastic and specialist individuals, who are constantly working very hard to get you the best value for your money. Wishing you more and happy travels, always.

music on board

SpiceJet flights play soft rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... Eagles Witchy Woman

184

This was the first song that Don Henley wrote for Eagles with guitarist Bernie Leadon. "She drove herself to madness with the silver spoon" in the song is a reference to Zelda Fitzgerald's special slotted silver spoon used to dissolve sugar cubes with Absinthe. Foreigner I Have Waited So Long “I have waited oh so long, please don't tell me baby I was wrong”. Composed by Mick Jones, a simple lilting ballad from “Hot Blooded” that every teenager in the 1980s could identify with, became a big hit. Peter Malick Group with Norah Jones Heart of Mine “Don’t let her know that you love her, don’t be a fool.” A Bob Dylan composition from his album Shot of Love, and re-recorded by The Peter Malick Group in 2000 featuring Norah Jones. SpiceJet COO Sanjiv Kapoor notes, “I first heard this track playing on the radio in my W Hotel room overlooking San Francisco Bay one evening in 2005, and was immediately drawn to it and hooked… Norah Jones at her raw finest, a must for any fan!”.

May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

Dr Hook When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman “When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you watch your friends”… A truer phrase seldom uttered! Riding the disco wave in 1979 it became an international hit. Fleetwood Mac Over My Head This gentle soft rock song was released as the lead single from the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac. It was the band's first song ever to achieve 'hit' status in the US. Steely Dan Do It Again The first single by this American jazz/rock band, the song reached No. 6 on the Billboard chart. The band was known for nicely blending the elements of jazz, rock, funk, and pop. Eagles One of These Nights This title track written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey transformed them into international superstars. According to Frey, the song is about putting things off. "We've all said, 'One of these nights I'm gonna do something - get that girl... find that house.' Bee gees For Whom The Bell Tolls This lesser-known but still catchy Bee Gees track is from their 1993 album, “Size Isn’t

Everything”. With its plaintive lost love lyrics, this track is a pleasant reminder of the amazing vocal harmonizing power of the Brothers Gibb. Ray Charles and Norah Jones Here we Go Again Ray Charles' 1967 hit was re-recorded as a duet in 2004 with Norah Jones as part of Charles' Grammy Award for Album of the Year winning Genius Loves Company. It proved to be the most popular and critically acclaimed song on the album. Eagles I Can’t Tell You Why This song from “The Long Run” was the first to feature Timothy B. Schmit on lead vocals. Live versions of the song were released in the 1980 album Eagles Live and 1994's Hell Freezes Over. Bruce Springsteen My Hometown This 1984 song begins with a nostalgic invocation of the singer’s childhood, but then goes on to describe the racial violence & economic depression. Franki Valli My Eyes Adored You This popular song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan was originally recorded by Franki Valli and The Four Seasons in early 1974, but was released only with Fanki Valli’s name on it.

With teenage angst lyrics like “My eyes adored you, Though I never laid a hand on you, My eyes adored you...”, this was Valli's first No. 1 hit as a solo artist. Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry Slave To Love One of Roxy Music lead singer Bryan Ferry's most popular hits, this seductive 1985 song has been used in various cinematic works, most popularly in the erotic drama 9½ Weeks (1986). Percy Sledge When A Man Loves a Woman Written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, this plaintive song was recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966. With lyrics like “If she is bad, he can't see it, she can do no wrong,” it talks to the throes of blind infatuation. Chris Isaak Wicked Game This 1989 number became a raging hit when it featured in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart (1990). Its popular b/w video featuring top model Helena Christensen frolicking on the beach with Isaak was also ranked #4 on VH1's 50 Sexiest Video Moments. Eric Clapton Wonderful Tonight Clapton wrote

"Wonderful Tonight" for his wife Patty Boyd while waiting for her to get ready to attend Paul and Linda McCartney's annual Buddy Holly party. Boyd would later say: 'Wonderful Tonight' was the most poignant reminder of all that was good in our relationship."
