Dear SpiceJet customer, November 1 marks the completion of one year since I joined SpiceJet. It has been a challenging and exhilarating year in which SpiceJet has certainly made a mark. The branding, positioning, and perception of SpiceJet has been transformed over the course of the year, and from flying aircraft with the lowest loads (occupancy) one year ago, we are now in the position of having flown the fullest aircraft in the last 4 months. Average revenue per flight has gone up, operating costs have been reduced, and customer service transformed. SpiceJet now is a market-maker with its innovative fares and offers, and is a market shaker as well with other innovations such as our new and enhanced menu, weekend uniform, surprise birthday card distributions and celebrations on board, vibrant celebrations during major festivals such as Holi, Diwali, and during regional festivals such as Durga Puja. We have brought warmth, colour, passion, and a sense of joy back to the Indian aviation landscape, delivered to you each day by our 5,000 committed employees.
Also thanks to SpiceJet and its pricing stimulation initiatives that shook up the industry in a positive direction, passengers travelling by air grew 28% in September 2014 relative to September 2013, benefiting not just customers grabbing cheap fares, but also the larger economy: research has shown that for every dollar spent on air travel, 12 dollars is pumped into the economy overall, thanks to the ‘multiplier effect’. Airports, travel agents, hotels, and local businesses have all benefited from the increase in air travel, with never-before seen volumes even in low season. I do not think it would be far-fetched to refer to this as the ‘SpiceJet Effect’. In light of the above, it is ludicrous to think that some people claim the low fare offers are fake. Our mailboxes and Twitter feed is full of comments from passengers who have benefited from such offers, who cannot understand how anyone can claim these fares are not real. Demand does not go up 28% without this kind of pricing stimulation. The same people have also claimed that matching low fares prove the existence of a so-called
‘cartel’. To them I simply say, have you ever seen a cartel get together to reduce (and not increase) prices? The concept is ludicrous, so say the least. This is not a cartel, this is a competition. This is how a free market works! Despite all of the growth in passenger numbers, the airline industry in India remains under severe stress due to high costs. Aviation fuel cost in India is 40-60% higher than in other parts of the world. Even as crude oil prices have fallen by 17.3% since June this year, the price we pay for aviation fuel has fallen by only 3.2%. SpiceJet paid `3,260 cr for fuel in fiscal 2014. It is almost 50% of our costs. A 17.3% reduction would reduce our FY2014 fuel bill of `3,260 cr by `564cr. A 3% reduction reduces it by `98 cr. The difference is `466 cr! ATF prices in India (combination of base price and taxes) is really hurting Indian aviation and challenging the very viability of the sector. Our appeal to the relevant ministries is to please pass on more of the benefit of reduced global oil prices to help make the aviation sector in India healthier. We are not asking for special discounts or handouts, all we are asking for is ATF prices and taxes closer to what is paid elsewhere in the world, rather than what we have today. If that can happen, the industry will do the rest and rebound strongly. Thank you for flying SpiceJet

SPICEJET CUSTOMERS GRATITUDE FOR EXCELLENT SUPPORT
I would like to thank L. Arina who was extremely helpful, caring and polite. I am grateful for her excellent support during my journey in the 6th month of my pregnancy. SpiceJet has a better staff support than other airlines, all thanks to people like Arina. Anvi Poddar

At a time when you feel that your world is falling apart, at the time of a family emergency, the smallest of gestures seem like a ray of hope. Nasrin from your staff was that ray of hope for me. Her simple and beaming smile of empathy and the warmth in her voice made me feel a tad bit more relaxed before this journey. Truly appreciate the hospitality. Annum Waris

SUPERB FLIGHT EXPERIENCE of the I had a superb flight on my recent visit to Mysore. From the moment I checkedin till I landed, the service and attention provided by your staff was par excellence. You have a good set of people, both on ground and in-flight; young, smart and vibrant. Onboard the aircraft, your staff member Kanchan took over and was in command of the cabin, along with her colleagues. She is mature in handling tricky situations. Wishing your airline all the very best. May you go on to win further accolades! M.Ct.P. Chidambaram
FLAWLESS SERVICE When I travelled with your airline from Hyderabad to Coimbatore, Kanchan, one of the cabin crew, was extremely courteous and professional. The service offered was superb and the entire flight experience was flawless. She provided excellent customer service. This is a true reflection of the high standards that we have come to expect from SpiceJet. We have a corporate account with SpiceJet, and have all reasons to continue flying with you when we get such exceptional customer service. Sumit Sachdeva COMPASSIONATE CREW
TIMELY ACTION In October 2014, I had the privilege of witnessing the best customer care in the service industry. My flight from Delhi to Mumbai on October 5th was cancelled and rescheduled to 1720 hrs. Later, the same flight was delayed by 45 minutes. As a result I was bound to miss the bus service from Mumbai to Pune. On apprising my situation to the station manager Divya, I was accommodated on a direct flight to Pune. Her timely action in the situation was commendable and it reinforces me to travel by SpiceJet again. Awesome service. Thanks Divya! Aditya Kumar Mishra
November 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com
I travelled from New Delhi to Ahmedabad in September, and wish to compliment your cabin crew, Ms. Rajkumari. The flight had quite a few passengers who were probably travelling for the first time. She warmly attended to each of them, with a smile on her face. I felt genuine warmth and respect in her demeanour. I wish my words inspire her and her colleagues to be ‘human and compassionate’.

THE DENIM REVOLUTION

In September, Numero Uno conducted an excursion of their Gurgaon factory to unveil how raw materials were washed, bleached and stitched to form one of India’s first denim wear brands, Numero Uno. Lisa Haydon is the face of the new Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. Creation When it comes to denims, it is a challenge to get the right fit and the right cut that will make it functional & comfortable, yet extremely stylish. The various parts of the denim wear is stitched, literally like being assembled. Such as the zippers, belt loops, rivets and leather patches are all separate and added in various stages.
Bleaching, stone washing, scraping are some of the many treatments used to impart the character to the denim wear. So, the next time you wear your denim, pause and think of the hours spent in building that piece of history.

Surrounded by thick woods and two rivers, the temple a racts Shiva devotees. The 12 km long stretch from Swarg Ashram to the temple is also thronged by trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. A er your tryst with spiritualism, take part in some adventure sports. Many consider Rishikesh as a haven for white water ra ing, except during monsoon months. You can also go for bungee jumping, surfing, kayaking, cliff jumping, rock climbing, etc. Rishikesh has all the elements to make your weekend getaway a relaxed one, so ensure you hit the road this fall.
IN SEARCH OF PEACE Rishikesh lures those seeking knowledge and peace with its numerous temples, ashrams, and yoga institutes. Despite the growing number of visitors, the town’s lanes and alleys retain the old-world charm, and it remains a wonderful place to unwind.

he name Saffron is believed to be derived from the Latin word 'Safranum' and the plant is said to have been cultivated first in Greece. In Hindi, it is known as Kesar. The spice got its mention as far back as 1500 BC in many classical writings, as well as in the Bible. The botanical name of Saffron is crocus sativus. Obtained from the dried stigmas of the flower, it takes anything from 70,000 to 2,50,000 flowers to make one pound of saffron.
Its trumpet shaped stigmas are bright red, gradually changing to yellow in the style. Each flower has three stigmas of saffron. The flowers are individually hand-picked during autumn, when fully open
HISTORICAL REFERENCES
The first historic reference of saffron comes from Ancient Egypt, where it was said to be used by Cleopatra and other pharaohs as an aromatic and seductive essence, and to make ablutions in temples and other sacred places. In ancient Egypt and Rome, saffron was used as a dye, in perfumes, and as a drug, as well as for culinary purposes. During the 7th century, it reached China and spread through Europe in the

SAFFRON RICE Ingredients Rice – 1 cup Saffron – a few strands Sugar – 1 cup Cardamom - Green 4-5 (crushed) Black - 2 (crushed) Laung – 8-10 Desi ghee - 2 tbsp Milk – 1 cup Rose water – 1/2 tsp Almonds and cashew nuts (chopped)

METHOD Soak rice in water for 1 hour. Put Saffron strands in milk, add rose water and sugar. Boil 4-5 cups of water in a pan, add the rice and cook till the rice is about 80% done. Strain the water and mix half of desi ghee. Heat the remaining half in a pan. Add dry fruits and fry till golden-brown. Add whole spices and fry for about half a min. Add the milk mixture and boil. Add the rice and cook on low flame for 10-12 min. Garnish with dry fruits.
Middle Ages. The town of Saffron Walden, where it was once grown commercially, takes its name from the plant. Although the majority of the world's saffron is produced in Iran, Spain is the world's largest exporter of the spice. It can also be found in Egypt, Kashmir, Morocco and Turkey.
USAGE
Highly appreciated in Classic Greece for its colouring and aromatic properties, Saffron was initially used as a remedy to sleeplessness and to reduce hangovers caused by wine. Arabs used saffron in medicine
HABITAT The cultivation of saffron needs an extreme climate: hot and dry weather in summer and cold in winter. The sowing of bulbs is a very hard job because it forces the person to walk in a bent position for hundreds of yards. The rose of saffron blooms at dawn and should stay for the least possible time in the plant because it withers quickly. For this reason, they are collected between dawn and 10 am. Once the flowers are gathered, stigmas are separated and dried. Then, the stigmas get their final shape: bright red, rigid and without wrinkles. November 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Saffron is used in Spanish dishes such as Paella or Fabada for its anaesthetic properties. Nowadays, Saffron is an important part of the culinary world. In India, it is an indispensable ingredient in many recipes of rice, sweets and ice-creams. It is used in Ayurvedic medicines and in religious rituals. In Saudi Arabia, a real Arabic coffee should have saffron and cardamom. In the North of Italy and South of Switzerland, saffron is essential in the preparation of Risotto.

Kashmiri Pandits are known for their gourmet food. And weddings are even more special. While the lunch on the day of the wedding or ‘Lagan’ is for the couple, relatives and friends to enjoy, the dinner or Phir Sal is only for the couple who are invited for a meal by the girl’s parents. VARIETY IN INDIA According to Ramit, the following are the various types of photography currently prevalent in India:
Candid Photographer & Cinematographer teams - Considered as the next level, these teams have high quality standards. They are capable of offering great video documentation (with a story line, interviews, etc.), coffee table books, calendars, posters among others. They are more expensive than studios and come with a large team.

Individual Photographers - Offering candid, fine-art photography, they prefer to keep it simple. A portfolio scrutiny and discussions of budget and aesthetics help client to understand what to expect. Most brides and grooms who go for an individual photographer also get a studio in addition to take care of the standard pictures/videos that everyone wants to see.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
Delhi-based Soumen Nath was a Chief Engineer-Automation with a UK-based MNC. A er a professional course and hours of practice, he delved into the eventful life of photography. With a background of street photography, ge ing people to pose for pictures was never his forte, and thus, his wedding images brought forth the ‘naturalness’ of the traditions, people involved, etc. Projects are taken up a er an intense discussion with clients. Only a er understanding the brief and the kind of results required, does he make an offer. Clients o en provide an itinerary of their special day, a quick introduction with the immediate family, and sometimes a special request to do the ge ing ready/make up shots, bridal portraiture, etc. Working on almost 12 - 15
weddings a year, he prefers to dedicate 3 - 4 weeks only on editing the pictures of one project. Believing himself to be a candid artist from within, Soumen is confident of the work he produces. “I am a keen observer and a story teller. For me, it’s essential not only to capture candid moments, but also the emotions associated with them. I love to capture the beauty of life, those fleeting moments, which are lost instantaneously for ever, to encapsulate those moments as a story for clients to preserve forever.”
GOD IS IN THE DETAILS
Mumbai-based Stuti Sakhalkar Dasgupta from The Cheesecake Project offers a service mirroring the name of her enterprise - quirky and different. For her, photographing the kind of emotions people exhibit during a wedding is addictive. The nervous bride, her hassled mother, a father who is overcome with emotions and yet pu ing on a brave face, are all the small details she likes to focus on. “It's heartwarming to mingle and photograph these moments and make the families relive every aspect of the wedding,” she says.

Bengaluru-based Elvin Jacob has propped up his own enterprise, the Elvin Jacob Photography. A self-taught photographer, Elvin has researched extensively on the subject of wedding photography,
Essence of the wedding must not be tampered with networked actively with professional photographers and documented many weddings across the country. “My style is an amalgamation of several styles,” Elvin adds. “I think the documentary aesthetic in my work appeals to my clientele the most. In photography, you run the risk of self-fla ery. It is the act of repeating shots with the exact composition and style – something you know will work with your client. I rely on referrals from past clients. That way, the potential clients will
have a fair idea of what my style is.” When shooting at weddings, Elvin keeps two clear objectives in mind - one is that the essence of the wedding must not be tampered with and that if someone who was unable to a end the wedding goes through his work, he should be able to relive and experience the wedding to a certain level.

Says Ishaan, “Nowadays, the couples have started becoming a lot more involved in the whole process as decision-makers, especially when it comes to aesthetics. Wedding photography is also fast moving away from a ‘documentary’ style to a more focussed, artistic product. A lot of young artists are bringing their unique visions to the process, adding a lot of freshness to the industry as a whole.” Also, with the emergence of social media, couples now like to showcase their pictures online, and not preserve images only in a photo album. “Short wedding films are also a rage these days, as they can be shared online and bring out the essence of the celebration in a visually appealing way,” he says. Soumen has witnessed his customers wanting more mood shots, where emotions and gaiety are captured. “They want to capture the event as it unfolds.” His customers have a basic knowledge of candid photography, a step which he feels will eventually pave the way for more creative art in the field of photography, where mediocrity will take a back seat. the motorcycle as deeply as possible. This includes size and proportions of the motorcycle, detailing, finishes, paint shades and graphics.” Mumbai-based Vardenchi customises Royal Enfields and Harley Davidsons and have the Triumphs in the pipeline.
CUSTOMISE WHY?
In the global market this started as a functional modification of ex-military bikes right a er the second World War. The idea was to develop cheap motorcycles by bobbing and chopping old ones, in order to increase efficiency and speed. The trend entered a new phase when the cheap variable was absolutely done away with and fashionable statement
replaced utility, for some time. Craig explains, “When we started 9 years ago, the trend was choppers that were flashy, but the current trend is being true to the essence of motorcycling. Designs have become more classic and vintage, and are more user-friendly.” Choppers remained, and to a limited extent still are, in the radar of popularity because of the style quotient, rather than performance or comfort. Called so because of modification of the original design (‘chopping’), a traditional chopper has high handlebars, long forks, a small front tyre and typically are without the rear suspension, the signature of several Hollywood movies, the most iconic of which is ‘Captain America’ in Easy Rider.
CUSTOMISE HOW?
“We dream and mostly our dreams have two wheels,” says Samik Cha erjee, avid biker, founder and creative designer of Delhi-based Motocra Customs. An old bike (or a new mass produced model) is brought to the workshop with an estimated design idea by a customer. A er a few brainstorming sessions, a workable design is decided upon, with a focus on functionality and efficiency. “Designing is the element that excites us the most in the process of remodelling and customising. We take each of our designs through ruthless test runs that we otherwise are apprehensive to conduct on right-off-the-showroom bikes,” adds Samik.

BOBBERS & CHOPPERS THE BASIC IDEA BEHIND A CUSTOMISED BIKE IS BEING MINIMALISTIC, WHERE EVERYTHING IS STRIPPED FROM THE BIKE THAT IS NOT NEEDED. FOLLOWING ARE THE BASIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO: BOBBERS ARE BUILT AROUND UNMODIFIED FRAMES, WHILE CHOPPER FRAMES ARE OFTEN CUT AND WELDED INTO SHAPE. IN BOBBERS, THE FENDERS (MUDGUARDS) ARE USUALLY REMOVED, INCLUDING OTHER SUPERFLUOUS PARTS, TO REDUCE WEIGHT. 82
BOBBERS OFTEN LACK MOST OF THE CHOPPERS’ AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS CHROMED PARTS AND ELONGATED FORKS.

The mileage and performance depends on the donor bike As per the customer requirements, everything right from chassis to handles may be changed or improvised. “We get all kinds of requests, from the straight out whacky, ‘Please convert my Maruti 800 into a chopper’ to ‘What will it cost to make my Royal Enfield look like a Harley FatBoy’? We end up taking orders where the client has decent taste and has done his homework with custom bikes,” says Vijay Singh, founder and team captain at Rajputana Custom Motorcycles (RCM), Jaipur. The models in demand are cafe racers, old school choppers, bobbers, scramblers or board trackers. The bikes, frequent as base models, are mostly Royal Enfields, Harley Davidsons, Karizmas and Avengers.
THE ECONOMICS

DOS AND DON'TS NOURISHING ONE’S SKIN, AND ACHIEVING A GLOWING FACE IS PARAMOUNT FOR A BRIDE. AND FOR THIS, THE BRIDE-TO-BE HAS TO PLAN AT LEAST A MONTH AHEAD. NO MATTER HOW EXPENSIVE THE MAKEUP BRAND IS, IT CAN NEVER REPLACE THE NATURAL RADIANCE OF ONE’S SKIN. SO INVEST IN THE APPROPRIATE BEAUTY TREATMENTS TO OVERCOME ANY KIND OF ACUTE SKIN AILMENTS WITH THE RIGHT CLEANSING AND EXFOLIATION REGIME. 92
STYLING A BRAID A VERSATILE OPTION, THE BRAID CAN BE STYLED IN MANY WAYS. THE ‘ENGLISH BRAID’ IS PREDOMINANT IN INDIA, BUT TO ADD THE SPARK IN YOUR OUTLOOK, TRY THE FRENCH OR THE HERRINGBONE BRAID STYLES. ALSO, THE TOP KNOT IMPARTS A TRADITIONAL INDIAN LOOK. HOWEVER, IF DONE RIGHT, IT CAN LOOK LIKE THE FUNKY STREET STYLE FASHION STATEMENTS IN NEW YORK CITY.
The latest colours for eye shadows this season is all about deep colours hairstyle, especially if it suits the face cut of the bride-to-be. Rod Anker further elaborates, “There is rarely a particular ‘look’ for western or ‘Indian wear’. It's all about what looks good on the person no ma er which part of the globe they belong to; hair doesn't discriminate.” What is essential to keep in mind is that the end result of the hours of toil will be captured for the rest of your life, so one should be absolutely certain about the hairstyle. “It is important to love one’s entire look, and if you are opting to get your hair coloured or cut, do it 2 - 3 weeks before the big day, allowing your hair to set itself till then,” he informs.
COLOUR ME AWESOME
Winter is generally considered as the best wedding season, Vidya Tikari, Director- Makeup, Monsoon Salon & Spa, helps us get our colours, shades, tints and tones right. The latest colours for eye shadows this season is all about deep colours, ranging from November 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com
deep blue or berry to purple. As winter beckons deep colours, would-be brides can experiment with metallic eyes that are a rage at the moment, and ombre. Smokey eyes are making a comeback, and it needn’t be just black or grey. Smoking hot shades of gold are quite popular too. Adding depth to the eyes is the feline eyeliner teamed up with glowing skin and sheer nude lip colour. Bronzers become basic winter skin essentials, and a light gold to deep bronze will do the needful depending on the skin tone. Forming a firm base for your makeup is the foundation, and a ma e velvety foundation will keep your skin feeling fresh and looking healthy. Always use good quality organic makeup that is not harsh on your skin.

Till a few years ago, embroidered and heavier fabric was in demand for wedding dresses. Today, whilst the look and feel remains heavy, there is an equal focus on style. Contemporary designs have more to do with new fabrics with a degree of experimentation in hybrid cuts and colours. Designer Jessica Khanijo shares, “Today’s brides are unconventional in every sense, for they know what they want. When it comes to the D-Day of their life, they really don’t want to go by the conventional approach and hence are experimenting in terms of cuts, pa erns and pairing. In spite of wearing a choli with the lehenga, they are opting for a crop top. Also they are experimenting with the length of the blouse while pairing it up with saree.”

Films are impacting bridal dresses in a big way. The would be brides are adopting and adapting styles from films. They are extremely individualistic, and they want something that will make them stand out. Designer Monica Rajeev Malik informs, "Gone are the trends where brides were only adorned in red or pink colours for their wedding day. The typical trend of cholis and lehengas has changed. Nowadays brides want to look sensuous yet elegant. So this has resulted in the innovation of lehengas with crop tops in the form of cholis. The colours, fabrics, cuts all have immensely changed.” Brides of today do not depend on the old traditional way of dressing; instead, they are making bold choices by opting for more unique outfits. Designer Suchana Parasrampuria explains, “Apart from using traditional style of gota pa i work or intricate embroidery, new age brides are now opting for lehengas and saris that are stylish and a bit edgy.

WHAT'S HOT THIS SEASON?
The Indian way of ge ing dressed revolves around essential factors of embellishment, fabric and colour. Monica Rajeev Malik shares that the trendiest colours of this season are bright colours like pink, blue, green and orange. The patch works are now cra ed beyond the necklines and sleeves are very much in play this season. Leathers are also used in patching a bridal lehenga and can be seen in the fashion dais. Suchana Parasrampuria suggests that Swarovski crystals are the popular embellishments and colours like blue, green and even neon tints are gaining prominence among the Indian brides. Jessica Khanijo believes that instead of one heavy lehenga or sari, brides should opt for more
sophisticated and simpler styles that can be worn later too." Observing the latest trends, Anjalee & Arjun Kapoor inform that extensive use of kasap, dapka, badla, mukaish, gota, etc... a look which has been passed on from the Mughal era, is making a comeback." Sourabh Kant opines that modern brides understand the minimalistic approach and prefer to keep either dupa a or blouse heavy at a time, which provides a chic and elegant look, rather than completely filled out a ire which looks outdated nowadays. Today, brides need unique and interesting concepts in comfortable and lightweight ensemble, which has to be in accordance with their decor themes. The colony is home to around 500 sweepers employed with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. For people who keep the city clean, the living conditions in the colony are appalling. Garbage lies dumped along its lanes, the drains are clogged with plastic, the courtyard and sides of buildings hold waste water and garbage hangs down the sunshades of windows.

Here is a case study to highlight this: Mr. A and Mrs.B, aged 49 and 39 respectively, had been married for 12

However, the couple was keen to pursue treatment. They were advised to undergo another IVF/ICSI but the embryos were cultured in special incubators using time-lapse technology. The couple conceived in this cycle and had a healthy baby. Time-lapse imaging is the latest digital camera technology, which captures images of the embryo several times an hour during the whole incubation period, producing a ‘movie’ of the embryo development, which can then be viewed in detail. While voluntary infertility due to late marriage and delayed child bearing are a reality, what is concerning scientists all over the world is the actual decrease in reproductive potential. Recent studies have shown a progressive decline in male fertility over the years. On an average, sperm counts are falling at the rate of 1 - 2% every year. Associated with this is a smaller but significant change - a rise in the incidence of testicular cancers and other disorders. It is striking that these changes have occurred over a relatively short span of time, suggesting environmental rather than genetic factors. Are we now dealing with a global public health issue? Dr. Arati Rama Rao Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sakra World Hospital Reasons for Declining Fertility • Stressful Lifestyle, irregular eating habits & junk food • Diabetes & Hormonal Imbalance • Exposure to Environmental toxins such as lead and cadmium • Chemicals - Phthalates and parabens , found in cosmetics, plastics, personal
care items, food cans, etc. • Chronic exposure to organic solvents • Some genetic conditions If you are having difficulty in conceiving, don’t wait for too long - a year of attempting with no results should prompt some action! • Get a professional consultation and a semen analysis done • Lose weight and exercise regularly • Limit coffee and alcohol consumption • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables • Avoid sitting in one place for more than 30 mins at a stretch • Avoid taking very hot baths and wearing tight fitting clothes • Be cautious with medications and exposure to chlorinated products like office paper products, napkins etc. Recent advances in In-vitro fertilization and Embryo Transfer and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection have become the savior for many couples. Advanced techniques aid in extraction of the sperms.

any people thought ‘Montgolfier’ brothers have gone crazy aiming to do something with balloons and riding on it at the same time. But in the history of aviation, those two determined men turned out to be pioneers, enlarging the scope of engineering capabilities, coupled with a never-ending sense of ambition and determination to fly. And the very people showered praise on their effort. When Jacques and Joseph Montgolfier from France, sent up a
small smoke-filled balloon in midNovember of 1783, the first balloon flight opened up a new avenue in the sky. Ever since then, numerous inventions later, the Wright brothers struck gold, as they invented the

the aeronautical engineering. Many European pioneers came to India in 1910 with aeroplanes in a bid to showcase flying and enter into any business propositions with the rich Indian princes. On February 18, 1911, French pilot named Monseigneur Piguet flew the first commercial flight in India from Allahabad to Naini. And in December next year, the Indian State Air Service in collaboration with UK-based airline, introduced the London-Karachi-Delhi flight.
SPICEJET: IN FOCUS
Entering the exciting domain of commercial aviation, SpiceJet started its operations in 2005. Modelled as a low-cost airline, lowest air fares with highest consumer value were offered. The period from 2005 to 2012 can be termed as a period of inception and expansion. And by 2008, SpiceJet was India's secondlargest low-cost airline in terms of market share. Expanding beyond the metro cities in India, in 2011,
the airline acquired 15 Bombardier Q400s with a capacity of 78. This was to help connect to Tier II and III cities. The airline’s fleet includes 6 Boeing 737-900ER, 30 Boeing 737800 and 15 Bombardier Q400. In 2014, SpiceJet underwent radical changes to promote itself as a customer-centric brand. A new mantra, SOCCH (Safe, On Time, Clean, Courteous, Hassel-free), was introduced. Customers now get delicious hot meals, SpiceMax seats for maximum comfort and special weekend uniform among other innovations that have been launched. The company's on–time performance is amongst the best in India, at 82%.
EXPANDING HORIZONS
Enhancing operations to Nepal, in August 2014, SpiceJet inaugurated its first flight connecting KolkataBagdogra-Kathmandu. This is in addition to the 11 weekly direct Delhi-Kathmandu flights. The airline also launched a daily KolkataBangkok flight in September.

It was a delightful experience to be served by Abhilasha, who put all the passengers at ease. Experience with SpiceJet: I can’t express how gratifying it is to get positive feedback from passengers. I am truly delighted and happy that I am doing justice to my job and to our tagline, ‘Whatever we do, we do it with all our heart’. I am thankful for the support of the management, base and my colleagues, otherwise, this would not have been possible.

Customer feedback: My wife and I o en travel with SpiceJet, and we came across Chetan twice. Our first encounter with him was on the Delhi-Goa flight in May this year. We met him the next time, when we were returning from Kochi in August. Both times we were given a warm welcome by him. He remembered us even a er so many months. He is the first cabin crew I came across who remembered passengers. We were given non-reclining seats from Kochi-HyderabadDelhi, and we were unhappy. Although he couldn't help us in changing the seats as the flight was full, he made sure that we were comfortable. He kept asking us if we needed anything. This was a very nice gesture. He is doing a wonderful job. We will certainly hope that he is travelling whenever we are! Experience with SpiceJet: I would like to thank the passengers and management for appreciating my work. It gives me immense pleasure and motivation to keep doing my work.

CHANDNI PURI DELHI BASE Passenger feedback: I travelled from Delhi to Kochi on July 6, 2014 with SpiceJet. The check-in procedure was smooth and the flight landed on time. The aircra was well-maintained and the staff was very helpful. The work of crew in-charge, Chandni must be highlighted, as she took exceptional care of my mother. Another crew member, Ankush, also did a great job to make our journey smooth. We will choose SpiceJet again, and will certainly recommend to friends and family members. Experience with SpiceJet: I am really proud to see my name in the appreciation list. My hard work is finally paying off. When someone appreciates my work, I feel motivated and start working more happily and more gracefully onboard. I want to specially thank SpiceJet. This actually proves that ‘Whatever we do, we do With all our heart.'
BHARATH CHENNAI BASE Passenger feedback: In July this year, I had taken the morning flight from Delhi to Coimbatore via Chennai on SpiceJet. During the flight, I had a personal problem which I then shared with Ms Vinaya at the time of boarding. She consulted with Bharath, who went out of the way to make me feel comfortable. They personally ensured that till I reached my destination, I was well taken care of. The hospitality, warmth and generous behaviour demonstrated by Bharath was commendable. Experience with SpiceJet: I joined SpiceJet in November 2010 as a Customer Service Executive. Gradually, the company gave me more scope for growth, and now I am a Cabin Crew In-charge. SpiceJet is the only airline I know that can give this much growth to its employees.
FARZEEN ZENAB DELHI BASE Passenger feedback: I travelled with SpiceJet in July 2014 from Pune to Delhi. I was delighted to be served by Ms Farzeen that day. She was kind, courteous and helpful. She knew her domain well and served with a bright smile. Experience with SpiceJet: SpiceJet is my first job and it has given me a lot ever since I joined. It has given me people I look up to and friends I can rely on. It has made me evolve as a person and everyday is a learning experience. SpiceJet has given me the liberty to be myself and to bring out the best in me. I am grateful to the team for recognising my capabilities.
KANCHAN MULCHANDANI HYDERABAD BASE Passenger feedback: On my recent visit to Mysore and back, your cabin crew member, Kanchan was able to handle difficult situations de ly. The person seated next to me was big-built. Once the flight was airborne and cruising, she gently suggested to him that he would be much more comfortable in a row that was empty. A er the move, he was quite happy to have all the space to himself! When I enquired with Kanchan, she explained that as per safety practices, it was not a good idea to have a person who could not move quickly, in times of emergency, seated right next to the door. I admired the way she handled the ma er, keeping in mind the safety aspect. Experience with SpiceJet: I joined the airline in 2011 and I admire all the opportunities which SpiceJet gave me to turn into one of the good and leading cabin crew. I always do my work patiently and calmly which makes me happy as well as empathetic. SOMDUTTA BASU DELHI BASE Passenger feedback: I was travelling by SpiceJet from Pune to Delhi and I met Somdu a on this flight. She made the journey really comfortable, fulfilling all our needs with a pleasant smile on her face. Her helpful nature combined with her high level of professionalism and standards of customer service were amazing to experience. Experience with SpiceJet: I have been working with SpiceJet since October 2012. Since then, it has been an amazing journey, and I truly enjoyed each and every moment. My trainers, base officials and trusted colleagues have supported me in every manner. NARIPENDER SINGH AHMEDABAD BASE Passenger feedback: I am a frequent flyer with SpiceJet and mostly fly on a monthly basis from Dubai to Ahmedabad. This is the second time I came across Naripender Singh as the cabin crew in-charge during my flight from Ahmedabad to Dubai. Every time, Naripender surprises me with his amazing service skills. He gives the personal touch which makes me feel like family. No other CCIC has been as competent as him and I hope he flies more o en on this sector. Experience with SpiceJet: It's truly a good feeling that passengers are appreciating my work on-board the aircra , and it also proves that I have justified my job at the end of the day. It certainly boosts my confidence level and helps me perform be er. I am grateful to be known and recognised as a part of such a fantastic team that helps me achieve my goals. Appreciation from the management is an indication that I am on the right path of customer care and comfort. MERWYN FERNANDES MUMBAI BASE Passenger feedback: I was on a flight from Bengaluru to Kolkata, on September 24, 2014. I would like to appreciate the customerfocussed approach and care shown by Merwyn Fernandes. I should state that the way he delivered his service towards the passengers, I and others could not stop appreciating his commendable work. Merwyn is a smart person and knows how to handle any situation diplomatically, keeping in mind the sentiments of the customers. Very rarely do we find such staff with such unique ability to manage guest relations. I am sure team members like him will not only make your organisation proud, but will also make the flying experience for travellers more satisfactory. Merwyn seems to be a motivating figure to the team and keeps up to the expectations of passangers. He is a very helpful person and lovable towards children, which is a great help towards the mothers who are travelling. I hope to fly again with Merwyn and his team. Keep up the good work. Experience with SpiceJet: Firstly, I would like to thank SpiceJet for recognising and rewarding my work. With its highly experienced and hardworking management and staff, SpiceJet today is blooming, and it is an honour and privilege to be a part of such an esteemed organisation.
