Spreading Wings This Season of Love Vanakkam, to all onboard! It’s February - the best time to spread love! Here’s our way of spreading happiness and love - this month, we add a new destination to our network with the induction of our 15th Airbus A-320 aircraft. Strengthening our presence in the south, we will operate five flights out of Chennai to Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. The addition of these new routes, we believe, will enable more people in India to experience air travel with our affordable fares coupled with world class service! The AirAsia Group’s strong presence in Chennai with direct flights to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok will act as a catalyst as we prepare for international operations towards the end of this year. Customer happiness will be our top-most priority for the year. Delivering the best possible experience to our guests is in itself a differentiating feature in the industry. Through a recent
12
study that was conducted amongst our guest base, we found that 49 per cent of our flyers are first-time flyers with AirAsia. Interestingly, 26 per cent of our guests are first-time flyers ever! It is heartwarming to see that we have been able to allow people to experience air travel with our offerings. The new age consumer’s tastes and preferences are constantly evolving owing to greater access to information. India ranks second in the world with 34 per cent Internet penetration; 80 per cent of web traffic is from mobile and about 28 hours a week are spent on mobile. Last year, mobile usage was beginning to overtake desktop usage and that trend is expected to continue in 2018 as well. Travel as a segment has moved more than 50 per cent on mobile. This year, you will continue to see specially curated campaigns and promotions across our website and the AirAsia Mobile App.
Amar Abrol, MD & CEO, AirAsia India
So, what are you waiting for? Once you land, look out for the QR code that leads you to the AirAsia Mobile App and install to explore the best deals; all-in-fares across our network are a notch better than anywhere else on our website and app! Here are my favourite destinations for the month of love – Bagdogra, Srinagar, Kochi or the all-time favourite Goa! We look forward to welcoming you onboard very soon and hope to make a lasting impression during your flight with us. You can share your travel experiences with me on Twitter @amarabrol. We’re always on the lookout for suggestions from guests to improve your experience. Don’t forget to use #FlyWithAirAsia in your travel posts.

Knockout in China The inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event in Shanghai, China, in November 2017 was a historic occasion that demonstrated Asia’s extraordinary rise in the Mixed Martial Arts fight scene.
In the Octagon All UFC fights occur in the Octagon, a padded cage that measures 30 feet across and rises six feet high. Its special shape – not square, since this would benefit boxers, and not circular, so as not to favour wrestlers – ensures no one martial arts discipline has advantage over the other. And its wide angles prevent fighters from being cornered. A fight is also known as a bout, and during a championship event, each bout consists of a maximum of five rounds, with each round lasting no more than five minutes.
Training for Top Spot
02 18 Amid brutal body slams, dramatic double leg take-downs, sneaky superman moves and furious hooks, history was made at Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz Arena in November 2017, when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held its inaugural event in mainland China. Though the much-awaited event was headlined by former UFC Middleweight champ Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping and rising star Kelvin Gastelum (who was filling in for Anderson Silva), the significance of the fight reached far beyond the battle in the Octagon. For several years, the UFC had been raring to bring its action to Shanghai, seeing access to this glitzy city as an opportunity to appeal to one of Asia’s most powerful markets, China. In fact, looking to develop Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and increase its footprint in Asia, UFC announced its search for the next big Asian fighter in November 2017. To this end, UFC has teamed up with AirAsia, the leading and largest low-cost carrier in Asia,
16
on the first-ever UFC scholarship programme, offering one promising Asia-based athlete a full scholarship and training at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada. And so, this historic fight in China was really just the beginning of an exciting journey for MMA fighters in Asia. Future Fighters AirAsia is the first-ever Official Airline sponsor of the UFC – a fitting role for an airline that champions strong Asian representation, and one whose rise closely mirrors UFC’s rapid development as a global phenomenon. With the success of UFC Shanghai and the increase of Asian fighters in the sport, the prospects for growth for both brands are endless. It is hoped that this fiery collaboration between AirAsia and UFC will see a promising Asian fighter emerge to embark on a life-changing journey to the top, and that this will in turn inspire other fighters to dream big, show their mettle and take on the world.
Alex Garcia of Dominican Republic celebrates after his submission victory over Muslim Salikhov in their welterweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event inside the MercedesBenz Arena.
UFC fighters undergo years of vigorous training before they can even qualify as a candidate for the UFC. They have individualised training camps that consist of several coaches and sparring partners to help them strategise fighting techniques. Prior to a UFC event, each fighter has to undergo a process of weigh-ins to ensure that they fall within the correct weight division. Fighters who agree to compete at a specific weight class must maintain that same weight.
The Next Fight UFC® 221: Whittaker vs Rockhold takes place on February 10, with Aussie UFC middleweight champ Robert Whittaker going against former middleweight titleholder Luke Rockhold at the Perth Arena, Western Australia. It’s bound to be an exciting fight, as Whittaker faces Rockhold for the very first time.

Popularising Cartography Dr Manosi Lahiri, founder and CEO of ML Infomap, is the author of several books on Indian cartography, the study and practice of making maps. She speaks to travel 3Sixtyo about her fascinating work. advanced computer facilities at the university and the access given to researchers. Back in India, I was able to get funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to establish a GIS laboratory at Kirori Mal College and implement the Bihar GIS Project. It has been a boon for the geography department to have easy access to the facility. The report of the project was published in 1992. It caused quite a stir in the mapping fraternity because it documented the first successfully completed GIS project in India and introduced many to this nascent technology.

Tell us about yourself. I am a professional geographer. I enjoy maps, but I had no idea that my interest in cartography would define my life. I founded ML Infomap, a geographic information company which develops and supplies Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - ready digital maps of India. While my profession is mostly to do with IT (Information Technology), my interest in the history of cartography led me to interact with antique map collectors. What challenges did you face while researching for your book Mapping India? Mapping India is an illustrated publication, which deals with historical maps, books and catalogues. Some of these were found in libraries and the National Archives of India and others were stored overseas. Getting access to and then visiting these repositories was time-consuming. There were maps in so many different languages that it took quite some time to translate, understand and interpret them. It took around four years to complete the book. But, with this book, I was determined to make it easier for people to read and understand maps.

On a Good Note

What prompted you to start your own company? It was a fortuitous meeting in the mid-1980s with Professor Michael Blakemore who introduced me to GIS. We did not have a GIS company in India at that time. I realised that if I was to continue working in this field, I would have to develop infrastructure and hire the right people. So, I resigned from the teaching position I held at Kirori Mal College in New Delhi and established ML Infomap in 1993. You have also established a GIS at Kirori Mal College. What was the inspiration behind that? The inspiration came from visiting the NOMIS Research Centre in Durham, UK in 1986. I was highly impressed by the
We cannot imagine a childhood without record-breaking author Roald Dahl's beautiful creations. The man behind some of our favourite stories is also a dedicated philanthropist. Ten per cent of the income generated from the sale of his books goes to Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity supporting homeless children in the UK. This charity provides for specialist children's nurses and grants for families in need, as well as educational outreach programmes.
Out of all your works, which one is your favourite and why? Over the years, I have written several books on geography for middle-school children. However, Here Be Yaks holds a special place in my heart. It is a travelogue, which records my travels in Tibet with a group of friends in 2000 and 2002. The stark landscape, remoteness, clean air and sparse population left a lasting impression on me. During a later visit, I was able to identify the true source of the River Sutlej, about 50 kms away from where it was traditionally known to be. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, kindly wrote the foreword of the book. Who has been your biggest inspiration? I admire Jack Dangermond, who has pioneered and popularised the discipline of GIS through his company Esri.

An old man is watching the sun set over his village one quiet evening when a mysterious stranger turns up with the gift of a day-old goat kid. Thus begins the story of Poonachi, the little black goat, whose fragility and fecundity become cause for wonderment to the humans around her. From the eagle that swoops down on her to the wildcat that attempts to snatch her away within days of her arrival, the old man and his wife struggle to keep their tiny miracle alive. Before they know it, Poonachi has become the centre of their meagre world. Wrought by the imagination of a skilful storyteller, this delicateyet-complex story of the animal world is about life and death and all that breathes in between. It is also a commentary on our times, on the unequal hierarchies of class and colour, and the increasing vulnerability of individuals who choose to speak up rather than submit to the vagaries of an ambitious but incompetent state.

Now gone are the days when you had to maintain lofty diaries as reminders. Right from recording important dates to maintaining a list of chores, the reminder app in the phone does it all.
Flurry Analytics, part of the Yahoo Mobile Developer Suite, said in its latest study that in the year 2017, globally, the shopping category grew by 54 per cent as consumers continue to shift their spending into e-commerce via mobile shopping apps. The study adds that users are increasingly comfortable making physical purchases on their phones with now ingrained in-app digital purchase habits. “Additionally, digital wallet services such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay allow seamless access to stored payment information for mobile purchases, it says. Moreover, shoppers are constantly on the move, both physically and mentally, with attention spans growing increasingly shorter when online. The new m-commerce trend is evidently outdoing shopping via desktops or tablets across the globe. In India, the growth can also be attributed to cost-effective mobile devices and data packs, which have created new users even from Tier II and Tier III cities, which earlier were dependent on patchy
broadband connectivity or mobile data plans with limited data pack. According to another Criteo report, from ordering food and buying groceries, to booking a cab, about 94% of smartphone users in India have discovered, searched for and purchased an item using a retail and shopping app last year. In addition to this, companies of all sizes are capturing mobile users with mobile-friendly sites, user-friendly apps, mobile wallets, payments options for unbanked users, and so on. As the mobile ecosystem is coming together, e-commerce players too are into the mobile market with apps to reach out to the mobile audience. For instance, online stores are providing better discounts to app-only users instead of desktop users. If you see, these companies are scoring with daily and hourly sales based on their core shoppers’ behavioural patterns. With a trend like this, it is not hard to believe that soon, phones will be the new future, greatly reducing the need for and use of desktops!

You can now skip the tedious task of buying old paper maps or a separate GPS device every time you step out of your town. The built-in navigation system of smartphones will ensure that you never get lost again.

In Rajasthan, every town and village is richly endowed with heritage structures and other memorabilia of a royal past. Amid this impressive landscape, Udaipur stands out for its fascinating Mewari culture, vibrant colours and extraordinary art. Popularly known as the 'Venice of the East', Udaipur is one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful cities. If Jaipur is pink and Jodhpur is blue, Udaipur is white, owing to the whitewashed walls you’ll see virtually everywhere! It is also the city of lakes, dotted with several pretty water bodies.
The city was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan of the Rajputs in the year 1553. Udaipur offers you the best of both worlds. For a traveller craving a substantial dose of history and culture, Udaipur offers majestic palaces, picturesque lakes, quaint havelis, traditional bazaars, local handicrafts, artistic puppetry and scrumptious food options. Sit back and relax in the languid air of the city, and let the placid lakes and tall Aravalli Mountains lull you into contentment.
Start the day at the 340-yearold Fatehsagar Lake. This place is very calming and best suited for some contemplative time in the morning. Then, head out of town to the lesser-known Eklingji Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to have been built in the 8th century AD, this temple is located 22 kms outside the city. Further explore the arts and crafts of the Mewar region at Shilpgram, a 70-acre museum complex, which is a repository of the lifestyles of tribes from Western India. In the evening, head over to Bagore Ki Haveli, an 18th century mansion set in the Gangaur Ghat area.
AllStar Take “Udaipur’s beauty is surreal, something you read about but never expect to have the pleasure of experiencing. There are many heritage sites to explore and you’ll be spoilt for choice. While visits to City Palace and Jag Mandir are unmissable, I recommend a jaunt to the Kumbhalgarh Fort and Wildlife Sanctuary. Manmade wonders and natural beauty come together here to create a lovely escape from the city. Also, don’t forget to try the mutton delicacies in Udaipur. There are many, and they’re all delicious!” ~ Suhail Bhalla, Sales, Commercial, AirAsia India

Watching the sun set over Lake Pichola is a one-of-a-kind experience. Get onto a luxurious boat and watch the colours of the sky change before the sun sets. The sky is awash with rapidly changing hues of orange, pink and red, all of which are caught by the shimmering waters of the lake. The silhouettes of heritage structures on the banks of the lake make for a mesmerising sight at dusk.
For fine-dining in Rajasthani style, nothing can beat Ambrai Restaurant at Amet Haveli near Chandpole. Its location and al-fresco seating guarantees a splendid view of Lake Pichola, Gangaur Ghat and the City Palace. A part of the heritage luxury hotel, Hotel Amet Haveli, the restaurant offers excellent food coupled with world-class hospitality. We highly recommend the traditional Rajasthani thali (platter) for the variety of dishes one can relish in one meal.

to catch up on a lot of pending conversations. History Revisited The owner of the resort we were staying at told us about an 800-year-old zamindar palace named the Aranmanai Palace in Uthukuli, which is about an hour’s drive from the resort. It seemed like a good place to start our trip. The very fact that this expansive mansion had been in existence even before the Mughals established their empire in India intrigued my mother. Owing to our inquisitive nature, we tried to find out the history of this palace, which is currently home to erstwhile zamindar, Arunkumar Kalingarayar. Arunkumar lives here with his son Siddharth. He told us that the palace had been constructed in different phases. While the earliest building is 800 years old, the recent one where the family lives, is only a century old.

estled in the temple state of Tamil Nadu, Pollachi is a small, relatively unexplored town. Located about 40 kms to the south of Coimbatore, it is the second-largest town in the district. Due to its proximity to the Western Ghats, Pollachi experiences pleasant climate throughout the year. With green hillsides draped in neatly lined tea bushes, coconut trees stretching towards the blue sky and the air thick with rustic charm, Pollachi is a land of natural prosperity. I’ve settled in New Delhi with my family, and even though I love travelling, holidays are hard to come by with work and other responsibilities taking up most of my time. In fact, even city excursions with my parents is a luxury. In the midst of a particularly stressful rut of everyday life, I finally snapped - I decided to drop everything and give my mind the respite it so desperately craved. I wanted to give my mom a vacation as well, perhaps reconnect with the woman who has been a constant source of support and inspiration to me. While looking for prospective destinations, I came across an online post on this quaint town of Tamil Nadu. After a lot of research and looking for proper arrangements for a comfortable stay ideal for an elder woman, I finally decided to visit Pollachi. Initially, I wasn't sure about what to expect from our first motherdaughter trip. As it turned out, we were a lot more alike in our choices. We both love to get a feel for a city on foot, relish history and adore natural beauty. Pollachi, therefore, was tailor made for a new adventure. I simply booked the flight tickets, made all the required reservations and even stealthily packed for both of us. Two days prior to the trip, I finally asked my mother to pick up her essentials and come with me. I expected pushback – my mum isn’t exactly the spontaneous type. To my surprise, she agreed without hesitation! Perhaps she felt the need for some quality time with me, too. Elated and excited, we flew to Kochi and made the four-hour drive to our destination. The journey gave us ample time

For the history aficionados in us, the palace's numerous bedrooms, the library, sheds for bullock carts and cars, the large granary and cutchery (court chamber) where the zamindars held court in the yesteryears, were an awe-inspiring sight. We chatted with the friendly residents about the palace, learning about its history. A Tryst with Nature Pollachi is a reserve for the elusive tiger, and is rich in natural resources. The Anamalai Tiger Reserve seemed like an unmissable stop on our trip, with its abundance of indigenous flora and fauna and lush greenery. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers as the region is endemic to many avifauna species. Much to our delight, we spotted a white-throated kingfisher, a tree kingfisher found all across Asia and Turkey, and a Malabar parakeet endemic to the Western Ghats. Being a travel writer,

I have been on many journeys but this one was the first-of-its-kind. The sheer joy of seeing my mother getting all excited behind the binoculars as soon as she spotted a bird was a treat. On Cloud Nine, Literally As we were drawing close to the end of our journey, we decided to take the three-hour uphill drive from Pollachi to Valparai - a beautiful hill station. The route to Valparai has more than 35 hairpin bends! We braved the journey to witness a breathtaking view of the tea plantations here. Finally, we decided to call it a day at a charming wooden chalet nestled within a tea garden. Mom treated herself to some Ayurveda therapies at the resort. We also did a meditation session together and realised how the mere presence of your loved ones relaxes you. Ever since this trip, we have had a newfound appreciation for each other. Too often we think of our parents as only authority figures in charge of our well-being, too far away from our own way of life to ever be relatable. We forget that they, like us, have aspirations and dreams; that they, like us, are still figuring out how to make the best of what they have. I have always admired my mother for her generosity and courage, but this trip showed me shades of her I didn’t know existed. The woman who berates me for eating out or working too much, disappeared, to be replaced by a girl who loves pigging out on masala dosa (fermented crepe made from rice batter and lentils) and racing up hills to proclaim herself the queen of Pollachi! This journey has transformed both of us in ways we could never have imagined. The relationship that we share now is more profound, going far beyond everyday niceties. I recommend everyone to take a vacation with their mum or dad. Such trips are important to rekindle the joy in relationships.

Kila Raipur's Sports Carnival February sees a transformation of the quaint village of Kila Raipur, Punjab, into an extravagant sports venue. Spectacular performances and daredevil stunts make the Kila Raipur Sports Festival a destination to be at for sports aficionados the world over. 02 18

ituated at a distance of approximately 20 kms from Ludhiana, the typically quiet village of Kila Raipur in Punjab wears a festive robe during the month of February with the commencement of the Kila Raipur Sports Festival, popularly known as the Rural Olympics. Organised by the Grewal Sports Association, it is the brainchild of philanthropist Inder Singh Grewal. The Rural Olympics have grown into an energetic, youthful event over the past three decades. Today, this festival attracts more than a million visitors every year and brings together more than 4,000 sportspersons from around the world. Quirky Quotient The games in this event are divided into three categories: rural sports, modern sports and performing sports. What catches one’s fancy here are the strong men pushing their physical boundaries by moving heavy vehicles and motors without the help of any machines. Everyone in the crowd cheers for daredevil performers who are either doing 500 push-ups in 15 minutes or have rocks weighing two quintals broken on their bare chest. From six-yearolds to 70-year-olds, the display of physical strength and stamina is something that all the participants love to watch. Inspired by the publicity this festival has garnered over the years, I decided to experience it on my own last year. It was a sight to behold when the courageous Gurmail Singh, a polio patient, balanced himself on the lid of an upright bottle. During the event, he said, “One should not stop living because of physical challenges. I

This was followed by a group of daring girls who performed breath-taking stunts atop moving bikes. Every year, many such daredevil acts constitute the charm of this gathering. The Inception
It was in 1933 that philanthropist Inder Singh Grewal visualised an annual recreational meet where farmers from areas surrounding Kila Raipur could get together and test their physical endurance. The idea gave birth to the Rural Olympics in Kila Raipur. Over the decades, the festival has grown from being a small local affair into an annual international event. ruralolympic.net
Trip Tips It is recommended that you carry food and beverages to the stadium. There are limited accommodation options in Kila Raipur. But you will find plenty of places to stay in Ludhiana. The nearest city is Ludhiana, making Kila Raipur a perfect weekend getaway from Chandigarh and New Delhi. AirAsia flies to both these destinations on a daily basis from various cities.

trolleys are some of the activities that keep the audience on its toes. Besides the rural competitions, the highlight of this sports festival is kabaddi. Young boys from different villages and even teams from countries such as the USA, England and Canada play against each other with true sportsman spirit. The enthusiasm for this particular game is spectacular, with the audience cheering loudly and relentlessly for their respective teams. The organisers are well aware of the dangers the performers face and therefore make sure that each performance is carried out under strict surveillance with all the required aid and tools in order to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

Livening Things Up There is much more to this unique gathering than just sports and games! For instance, Nihangs, in their blue attire and huge turbans, patrol the stadium authoritatively on sturdy horses. Also known as akalis (immortals), Nihangs belong to the ancient clan of armed Sikh warriors. Upbeat Punjabi songs play all day, boosting the morale of the participants and adding a festive touch to the events. Trained bhangra (folk dance of Punjab) performers keep the crowds entertained through the day. The live commentary in Punjabi gives the games an earthy flavour. But unbridled enthusiasm can often lead to potentially unruly behaviour, and the local police patrol the premises with props and gears necessary to control the crowd. The weather is extremely cold during this time of the year but even the chill and the fog are not enough to deter the will and the enthusiasm of the spectators. The grandeur of Kila Raipur is such that people from far-flung areas throng the venue with great enthusiasm, endlessly cheering on their favourites.

Rows of bright, colourful bangles and other handicrafts beckon as one walks from Charminar to Chowmahalla Palace – the two iconic monuments of Hyderabad. This is Laad Bazaar, Hyderabad's hub of all things glittery! Words Anuradha Goyal

n the noisy, crowded, chaotic bazaars that seem to spout from all four sides of the Charminar, a monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, Telangana, the splendour of Laad Bazaar is undeniable. The very first step into this kilometre-long market is enough to catch your fancy for the several thousands of bangles on display. A walking tour into the bylanes of Hyderabad allowed me to explore a different world altogether. Laad Bazaar, also known as Choodi (meaning bangle) Bazaar, ostensibly derives its name from the material used to make bangles. It is a treasure trove for lacquer bangles, semi-precious stones, pearls, rich fabric and khara (starched) dupattas (a scarf worn by women on an Indian attire).
There are many theories about how Laad Bazaar got its name. Some say it came from lac or lacquer, while others say it was named after the Golconda Army General, Abdur Razzaq Laary. The most-accepted version goes back to Ladli Begum, wife of Mehboob Ali Khan, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. Wherever the name came from, today laad is accepted as a colloquial word for affection, fondness and pampering, all put together. Unique Findings I entered a small shop with all three walls stacked high with rows of stone-studded lacquer bangles. Two women were haggling with the shopkeeper. To dissuade them, the shopkeeper argued, “Do you know how many hands these bangles pass through
before you wear them on your wrists?” My curiosity got the better of me and I couldn’t stop myself from inquiring, “How many?” He pointed to the lane behind us and told me to find out for myself. Minutes later, I was in the lanes behind Laad Bazaar, looking at the various stages that a lacquer bangle goes through. The experience was truly mind-boggling. A circular
Laad Bazaar, formerly called Lord Bazaar, has more than 350 shops making and selling world famous lac bangles (resinous material, secreted by insects, which is collected and moulded in hot kilns to make these bangles), decorated with coloured stones.

delicate fabric, making this a unique and rich addition to your wardrobe. Paradise Within As soon as I came back onto the main road, I heard the calls of salesmen from the many pearl shops. They are experienced enough to identify potential customers in the crowds of the marketplace. They urge you, quite politely, to just have a look at the pearls. I took the bait and feasted my eyes on the famous Hyderabadi pearls. Hyderabad is known as the Pearl City of India, and with good reason! Go behind the shining shops and you will see women skilfully sorting pearls of different shapes and sizes, piercing and then stringing them together to create beautiful necklaces. While the white shining pearls are gorgeous, I loved going through the irregularly coloured ones too – each one is unique and intriguing.

Pearls of Hyderabad
Apart from the colourful bazaars, Hyderabad is home to several other attractions. Charminar, meaning ' four minarets', is the signature
monument of Hyderabad. It is said that when the city moved from Golconda to the banks of the Musi River, it grew around Charminar. Built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth sultan of the Qutub Shahi dynasty of India, Charminar gives a bird's eye view of the city.

There is a lot more to explore in Hyderabad - kalamkari (blockprinted cotton textile), nirmal (art form of Hyderabad) and bidri (metal handicraft from Bidar, Karnataka) work and silverware. You can also see some of the finer pieces at the Salarjung Museum nearby. What makes this museum iconic is that it was declared open in the year 1951 by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. On the streets, there are all kinds of vendors selling hair clips and tassels. In the shops you can get attar (oil-based perfume) and surma (local kajal). You can also pick up artificial jewellery in the latest designs. Essentially, Laad Bazaar will fulfil all aspects of shringar (beautification). Royal Feel Having explored Laad Bazaar to my heart’s content, I walked across the street to Chowmahalla Palace – a set of four royal palaces of the Asaf Jahis of Hyderabad. The 150-year-old
Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, besides its ornate Durbar Hall, boasts of a classic clock tower. It was restored a few years back by the present generation of the royal family, making it a prime venue for concerts and other events in the city. Laad Bazaar, however, is the glitter of Hyderabad – the most charming shopping area of the City of Pearls. Guide books will tell you it opens around 11 am, but this delightful attraction on the banks of the Musi River is a late riser. It would be best to visit Laad Bazaar in the second half of the day or in the evenings. Hone your bargaining skills before you hit the busiest market of Hyderabad – you’ll need them!

A
trip to Leh in the spinechilling cold of January led me to the home of the Brokpa, touted as the only pure-bred Aryan race alive. A social post on this race, which is tucked away from the city, sparked my journey from Chandigarh to Ladakh. I was curious to see if I could peek behind the curtains, maybe unravel the hidden secrets of this endangered tribe. An ambitious goal, I know, but I had to try. Even though visiting Leh at this time of the year is not at all

recommended owing to the harsh winter, my determination to find out more about this tribe made me take the plunge. With all the bookings in place, I travelled to Leh, and stayed at a hotel in the city. During the few hours there, I gathered contacts for accommodations at the villages of Hanu, Dah-Biamah, Garkon and Darchiks, which were once part of the Indus Valley Civilisation. The next day, I boarded a bus to Hanu, a secluded village situated at a distance of 130 kms from Leh. This village is home to the Brokpa - also

known as Dards - a tribe that has remained sheltered from the world for centuries. With the help of the connections I made in Leh, I was able to get a room at a quaint homestay in Hanu. Like all other homes in the area, it was made of mud and stone. The best part about staying here was that I could forge a bond with the locals. I heard some very fascinating stories about the Brokpa’ culture over some delicious food with the locals. Gur-gur cha (brewed black tea), freshly cut roasted potatoes, radishes, turnips and whole-wheat Indian flat bread constitute a typical meal for the families here. Tales from a Bygone Era As per the locals, legend has it that there were three brothers by the names of Dalo, Galo and Melo who settled in

While we were chatting, the owner of the homestay realised that I had a mild cold and made me some thuksing, a homemade remedy made from herbs. This was nothing less than a magical potion, clearing my sinuses and vanishing my headache in a few minutes. The next morning began with a plateful of apricots, almonds and, amazingly, a glass of white wine! The initial inhibition of exploring this unknown land slowly began to fade. To my utter disbelief, I found out that the Brokpa grow grapes and are experts in winemaking. The villagers also proudly exclaimed that they are self-sufficient and grow tomatoes and other grains and vegetables. They rear sheep and goats for wool and milk. They consider the ibex (a species of wild goat) sacred, so it came as no surprise that the Brokpa deity is a pile of ibex horns. The more I stayed there and soaked in the culture of the Brokpa, the more intrigued I became with it. I decided to investigate this elusive tribe further, so I hitched a ride to Garkon village, situated at a distance of eight kilometres, approximately. After reaching there, a kind local took me on a walk around the village and showed me an old, ruined castle. I was also invited to an old lady’s house to see her silver jewellery. According to her, some of her ornaments were over 100 years old.

My driver-turned-guide gave me a very useful tip that I should start my journey by visiting the monasteries as they are not merely beautiful, but they are also an important part of their culture. Land of Monasteries Our first halt was at Rumtek Monastery. It is said to be the largest monastery in Sikkim and also the seat of Karmapa Lama, the third-highest ranking monk in the hierarchy of Tibetan
Buddhism. According to the official tourism website of Sikkim, it is the largest monastery in Sikkim and showcases the best of Tibetan architecture. The spacious, stone courtyard still sees traditional lama (priest) dances performed on certain religious days of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. Young, maroonrobed monks roam the grounds, as the intermittent clanging of bells and sounds of hymns from the prayer hall create the sweetest melody on the planet. After a mesmerising experience at the Rumtek Monastery, we decided to move on to Enchey Monastery. A legendary lama known as Drubthob Karpo, famed for his apparent flying powers, is credited with the foundation of this famous monastery in 1840.

History enthusiasts can visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (near Do-Drul Chorten). This museum houses a rare collection of statues, traditional art forms, thangkas (painted, woven and embroidered scrolls) and age-old manuscripts in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Lepcha. An hour-long road trip from Tsangu Lake will take you to Nathula Pass (bordering China). It is a feeder road to the ancient Silk Road, connecting Sikkim to China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
"Located in the Eastern Himalayan range at a height of approximately 1,649 m, Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is a place where the past and the future coexist peacefully together." 02 18 1. Perched on the ridge of a hill, Gangtok is famous for its scenic beauty and spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga, third-highest mountain in the world. 2. A monk locking the colorful door of the Rumtek Monastery, a famous tourist attraction and also home to the Karmapa Lama, the third-highest ranking monk in the hierarchy of Tibetan Buddhism. 1 2

One of the most significant gompas (monasteries and temples) of Tibetan Buddhism, it was rebuilt in 1908 by the 10th chogyal (king), Sikyong Tulku. Constructed in the shape of a Chinese pagoda, the interiors were replete with colourful, traditional Tibetan paintings. The three main deities worshipped here are Buddha, Loketeswara and Guru Padmasambhava. The Haunted Stupa After the monasteries, I moved on to explore the famed Do-Drul Chorten Stupa. It is believed that the entire complex was once home to evil spirits. Later, Trulshig Rinpoche, a renowned lama and head of the Nyingama order of Tibetan Buddhism, built the Do-Drul Chorten Stupa in 1946 to drive away the spirits. Considered to be one of the holiest stupas in Sikkim, it has 108 Mani Lhakor (prayer wheels) that were turned by the monks, accompanied by ritualistic chanting. Temple Trails Besides the magnificent monasteries and stupas, Gangtok has two beautiful temples - Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok. Ganesh Tok is a small, clean and well-maintained temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh. A nearby café served us fresh momos, noodles, parathas (Indian flat bread) and other refreshments. This place provides sweeping views of the valley and is arguably the best spot to get a spectacular view of Gangtok. Situated at a distance of about four kilometres from Ganesh Tok, a steep drive along serpentine roads leads to Hanuman Tok. This place provides an unimpeded view of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjung, the third-highest mountain in the world. It was less crowded than Ganesh Tok, and therefore more suitable for those who love peaceful surroundings.

The Mountain Lake Gangtok is also the ideal base to visit the glacial lake of Tsomgo. More popularly known as Changu Lake, it sits at an astounding height of 3,753 m. While the road is prone to landslides, and filled with potholes, the arduous journey is undoubtedly worth it once you reach the lake, which was surrounded by steep, snow-covered mountains. The scattered puffs of white clouds cast a diffused glow over the crystal clear water. Do remember that you need a Restricted Area Permit to visit the lake, which can be arranged by an authorised travel agent. Hangout high Apart from the scenic attractions here, Gangtok also has its own shopping and hangout
place. MG Road is the place to be at once the sun sets. A small paved stretch with a plethora of shopping, lodging and dining options, it is full of cafés and bars, where you’ll find people chattering in many languages. The road is lined with lovely lamp posts, benches and colourful flowers that give it a quaint-yet-retro chic feel. Like many hill stations, Gangtok too has seen its share of commercialisation. But there are still plenty of charming options to create a memorable experience – eat at cosy cafés, meditate in a monastery, window shop for hours, or share a bite with the friendly locals. With just enough of an alternative vibe, Gangtok is the quintessential destination for eccentric travellers!

cabin comfort
Joy of Flying Whether on a short- or long-haul journey, flying can be a pleasant experience if you are well-prepared. Here are some simple steps to ensure you have a safe, smooth and comfortable journey.
Onboard Care
Inflight Exercises
Troy Bantleman, personal trainer to celebrity athletes and AirAsia big boss Tony Fernandes shows you how to perform easy exercises for a comfortable flight.
Aircraft cabins are generally very dry and dehydration can occur easily. To overcome this:
Drink lots of water but ensure the intake is slow and regular. Drinking too much water suddenly will cause the body to expel the water quickly too, forcing you to visit the toilet frequently.
02 18
Tricep Stretch
Lower Back Stretch
Side Neck Stretch
Extend one hand down the centre of your back, while grasping your elbow with the other. Exhale slowly while pulling gently downward on your elbow, with your fingers aligned with your spine.
While seated, lift a knee up toward your chest and hold the position for 30 seconds. Gently lower the knee and perform three 30sec sets, alternating between both knees.
Gently tilt your head till you feel the stretch in your neck. Hold the position for 30 seconds and release slowly. Change sides and repeat until you have done three 30sec sets on both sides.
Prevent DVT Deep Vein Thrombosis can occur when a blood clot forms in the large veins of the legs or arms, blocking blood circulation. Inactivity during long flights may lead to the occurrence of DVT. If you are flying long distance, ensure you perform inflight exercises such as those listed above as a precaution against developing DVT. When possible and permissible, stretch your legs and walk along the aisle. Be aware of symptoms such as pain or swelling in the legs, which can happen even after you disembark. Seek medical attention if these occur.
88
Beat the Lag
Lubricate your eyes with eye drops, as eyes are aggravated by dry atmosphere. Also, ditch the contact lenses and opt for spectacles during the flight. Hydrate your skin by applying moisturiser or spraying a body spritzer on exposed body parts. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, or keep intake to a minimum.
Ear Comfort
To counter the effects of jetlag, get as much sleep as possible when flying west to east. When flying in the reverse direction, try to stay awake as much as you can. AirAsia’s chic Snug-as-a-bug hoodie keeps you cosy with its neck pillow attached to a soft hooded collar, and is easily deflated for storage upon landing. Enjoy savings when you pre-book this item at bigdutyfree.com
Changes in air pressure or altitude cause our ears to ‘pop’ and sometimes ache during take-offs and landings. For a comfortable flying experience, suck on sweets or, mimic the act of chewing and swallowing if you do not have any sweets with you. This will relieve the discomfort and help stabilise the pressure in the ear canals. Pacifiers will work just as well for toddlers. If you have a cold, use a nasal decongestant to clear your nasal passage and alleviate the ache.
