Message from the Chairman

Steve Jones, president and director of Export Sales at Ron Jones Hardwood Sales, Inc., and chairman of the MBA’s 2021-2022 Board of Governors ASSOCIATION SERVICES

“Just as crude is the lifeblood of our refinery assets, a strong leadership bench is the lifeblood of any succession planning process. Our partnership with the MBA is providing the core skills necessary to build a solid leadership bench.” Tracy Daggett, PHR, manager of Professional Development Training Services at the Manufacturer & Business Association, recognizes the importance of making the transition smoother when losing an employee to retirement along with their skills and knowledge base. He says the best course of action for any employer should be identifying key successors but also to train them for supervisory and leadership roles before they take the reins. Daggett already has seen an increased demand in the MBA’s supervisory and leadership courses from member companies that want to prepare their organizations for what’s ahead. “Many of the people coming to class are not even in their positions yet, but their employers have the foresight for what’s coming and are looking internally to fill those roles. They are grooming these people for the next steps in transition — to prepare for the succession of the retirees coming up.”

HELPING YOU NAVIGATE A SUCCESSFUL SUCCESSION MBA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AIDS IN TRAINING NEXT GENERATION OF TALENT

With the youngest of the Baby Boom generation turning age 65 by 2030, one of the most critical issues facing employers over the next decade is preparing for the next generation of leadership. Many employers recognize they can’t afford to wait until the moment key members of their staff announce their retirements to start planning replacements. However, the pace of early retirements driven by the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated unexpectedly — catching some employers off guard.

8

In September 2020, about 3.2 million more Baby Boomers retired than a year earlier, according to a Pew Research Center report. In each of the previous four years, the number of retirees increased on average by fewer than 2 million people annually. Yet, there was more than a 50-percent increase in retirements in 2020. Filling these positions can be daunting for any organization, but experts say the key is preparation and training to get your next generation of talent on board. And that’s where the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA) can help. 8

One company, for instance, implemented employee evaluations and appraisals four times a year to identify future leaders. “As this employer and so many others have learned, identifying people who are interested in developing their skill sets coupled with ongoing professional development training can better position them to figure out who should be next in line as a supervisor or manager,” says Daggett. For many companies, it can be a critical decision whether to promote an employee from within the firm or search externally to replace the retiring person. However, looking internally for the next candidate can be a win-win for many employers. Training team members with the soon-to-be retired worker gives time for the person to understand the job role, ask questions, meet contacts and get up to speed. It can also boost employee morale when team members see employers promote from within. “It creates more engagement among the rest of your team,” says Daggett. “Plus, you already have that core knowledge that you can build upon.”

Training for the Future

The Manufacturer & Business Association, which has been providing regionally recognized training for more than 25 years, is a valuable resource to help employers with the professional development training to take these next generation of leaders to the next level. In the MBA’s Supervisory Skills Certification Series, for example, participants learn the critical skills necessary to meet the everincreasing challenges of being an effective supervisor in today’s workplace. The five-part series teaches new and experienced supervisors the skills needed to properly motivate and direct their teams to meet company goals, objectives and law compliance. The Association also offers its highly interactive Leadership for Team Leaders Certification Series. Also a five-course program, the series is ideal for new leaders who want to know what their responsibilities are both to the organization and to the people they lead. “A lot of people are very confident in their own ability to do the job, but they’re not that confident in their ability to manage people, and that’s where our focus is — building relationships with your employees, motivating individuals, recognizing those motivational buttons, and being a better people manager rather than a task

— Sarah Hayden, Vice President of Human Resources American Refining Group, Inc.

manager,” says Daggett. “Regardless of what position you are in, even if you’re not in a leadership or supervisory position, these are all career-building, professional development skills that everybody really can benefit from. In essence, we are giving them those soft skills and relationship-building skills that they can practice and apply the next day.” American Refining Group, Inc. in Bradford, Pennsylvania, is among the many MBA member companies that have worked with the Association for assistance with its succession planning. The company is one of the oldest oil refineries in the United States and has been utilizing the MBA’s Leadership for Team Leaders courses several times a year since fall 2018. “Just as crude is the lifeblood of our refinery assets, a strong leadership bench is the lifeblood of any succession planning process,” states Sarah Hayden, vice president of Human Resources at ARG. “Our partnership with the MBA is providing the core skills necessary to build a solid leadership bench.”

Additional Resources

To help keep those core skills up to date as possible, the MBA recently introduced its new Supervisors Roundtable, which gives past supervisory skills participants the chance to network, share experiences and learn best practices from what they’ve applied in class. The monthly sessions are topic driven led by one of the MBA’s professional trainers and are available in person or online. “Some of our participants may have graduated five or 10 years ago and so these are going to be refresher topics that we’ll go over,” explains Daggett. “Then, we’ll transition into, so what’s happening now? What are some of the current challenges that you’re encountering every day, right now?” For companies faced with the challenges of succession planning, Daggett also recommends the MBA’s Talkin’ ‘Bout my Generation course. The one-day class helps participants learn how to make the most of a multi-generational workforce by understanding employees’ unique strengths and how to nurture them. “Generational training can be really beneficial to succession planning because you have one generation, the more seasoned employees, that may be transitioning toward retirement, but who have a lot of knowledge and experience that you need,” says Daggett. “A natural reaction would be, ‘Let’s make them trainers. Let’s make them mentors. Let’s make them shadowers.’ But there’s got to be a discussion about how to make your more seasoned employee communicate effectively when they’re training a younger generation employee since they communicate much differently.” According to Daggett, to have a good succession planning in place, employers need to figure out how to pass knowledge on to the younger generation. “Generational training is going to be a pretty important element of that,” says Daggett. “It’s one of the best-kept secrets for any successful organization, and the MBA is here to help.” To learn more about the MBA’s professional development training courses, visit www.mbausa.org.

Helping You Navigate a Successful Succession

MBA professional development aids in training next generation of talent. ASSOCIATION SERVICES holiday and vacation shutdown schedules, background check services, HR compliance reviews, and much more.

Greater Access, New Offerings

Stacey Bruce, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, director of HR Services at the MBA, says the Association is constantly looking for ways to keep members up to date and in compliance. In fact, the MBA has been a valuable source during pandemic and recovery, utilizing its COVID-19 Resources webpage, mbausa.org/covid-19, to keep members — and even nonmembers — informed.

CHARTING THE COURSE

MBA’S HR EXPERTS OFFER PROGRAMS, SERVICES TO KEEP EMPLOYERS INFORMED, IN COMPLIANCE In every business and every job, there are challenges that arise. For those in the human resources (HR) field, this can be anything from recruiting and retention to staying competitive with compensation and benefits, handling employee grievances, or complying with the latest employment laws and regulations. As many employers can attest, the ability to address these challenges is extremely critical since HR is in charge of the most valuable asset of any business — its workforce. Finding a trusted resource to assist your team is increasingly critical, especially today. And it’s why many employers turn to the Manufacturer & Business Association’s HR and Legal team for help. The MBA’s certified HR consultants and trainers and on-staff attorney offer a variety of programs and services to keep member companies informed as they chart a course for success.

“It’s a great tool! We keep up to date with regulations and have put all of the financial resources and forms needed for the tax credits there,” says Bruce. “But, on top of that, we also offer free and paid webinars to the public in regards to keeping them up to date on the changing legislation or regulations, such as the Federal Families Coronavirus Relief Act (FFCRA), and vaccinations.” The MBA’s HR & Legal Services’ monthly webinars are a convenient way for employers to hear from industry experts on timely employment law topics, such as recordkeeping, child labor laws, as well as health and safety issues, flexible scheduling, and work-from-home policies too. According to Bruce, the increase in online offerings has given members greater flexibility and allowed the department to be creative with its online tools. This past June, the MBA introduced its new HR CoffeeTalk program as a way to take its popular, 300-member HR ListServ to a whole new level. The free program gives participants an interactive, online platform via Microsoft Teams to bounce ideas off each other and see what’s worked and what hasn’t.

For employment law questions that arise at moment’s notice, Bruce insists one of the best tools for members is the MBA’s free HR & Legal Hotline. The hotline, which can be reached at 814/833-3200, 800/815-2660 or emailing hrservices@mbausa.org, enables employers to ask questions or just get reassurance — any time, any day at no charge.

level HR professionals through its HR Certification Series — including Level I and advanced courses — just to name a few.

“This year, we were able to hold one of the biggest conferences to date because the new venue gave attendees the opportunity to have plenty of space to gather together safely and comfortably within the same room,” says Bruce. “Our sponsors and our exhibitors not only got to network with the attendees,

MANUFACTURING DAY SUPPORTERS

“We have three certified HR professionals, as well as an on-staff labor and employment law attorney, and I believe that’s what sets us apart,” says Bruce. “When you call us, you know you are talking to an experienced team of HR professionals and an employment law attorney backing us. When it comes to HR and employment law, the MBA is a great resource to have at your fingertips.”

Like the ListServ, HR CoffeeTalk is participant driven. A topic is introduced, but then it’s really open to the members to discuss what’s on their minds. “Maybe they’re looking to draft a new policy and they just don’t want to reinvent the wheel; they’ll ask other peers for that information and they’re more than willing to share,” explains Bruce. “It’s very informal too. You can be dressed up in the office or just hanging out at your dining room table; it doesn’t matter. It’s about having a conversation about all things HR.”

One of the biggest additions to this online access has been the daylong MBA’s HR & Employment Law Conference on September 8. The ninth annual program, which has grown every year and attracts attendees from as far away as Pittsburgh and New York state, was moved to the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie this year to accommodate a larger audience — both in person and online.

Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. The 2021 annual celebration on October 13 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, will be a spectacular event. This year’s celebration will bring together educators, students and community leaders, and will showcase more than 60 exhibits, as well as programs and demonstrations designed for participants to experience innovative manufacturing technology in a hands-on, interactive environment. Thank you to all the Manufacturing Day supporters for their support!

The Association and its members have a proud history in our community, and it has been a honor to serve you, our members alongside such dedicated business leaders on the MBA’s Board of Governors. Each of you is determined to see the Association and its members succeed — and I am grateful for the ability to learn from and lead with you. Given what we’ve experienced together over this past year and a half, I also would like to extend a special thanks to my successor, Chairman Steve Jones, and Executive Committee members — Jana Goodrich, Kyle Blakeslee and Debbie Uht — as well as Board members Jon DeArment, Bob Frost, Jim Greenleaf, Mike Mankosa and Jeff Plyler — for your many contributions and support. You exemplify what it means to be leaders in the face of adversity, and the Association and its members are certainly better off because of it. In addition, I’d like to welcome new Board members — Guy Berkebile, Chad Betts and Scott Bonnell. You each share the Association’s goals and values, and I believe the MBA could not be in more capable hands as it enters a new chapter serving employers in the tri-state region. Thank you for answering this call to service!

According to Kyle Strayer, his father relished the battle with competitors to win each order and had a tremendous feel for what it would take to do just that under all kinds of economic and business circumstances. “He refused to accept losing any order and would continue to fight for it until the very end,” he said. “My dad exemplified this same strength, courage and unwillingness to give up throughout his recent medical battle.”

MBA President and CEO John Krahe also recognized Robert Strayer for his commitment to his family and business. “Bob will be remembered for his loyalty, his dedication and his competitive spirit,” Krahe said. “We are deeply saddened by his passing and are grateful for his many contributions to not only his industry but also the NWPA business community.”

MBA LEADERSHIP

2021-2022 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Members: Resilience. The definition of resilience is to recover quickly from difficulties, or toughness, and I believe it is a word that best describes the world we are living in today. No matter how many times our business community has been tested over the past year and a half, there’s no question that resilience has propelled many of our organizations — and teams — forward. Yes, we have and continue to face many challenges, but through our resilience and resolve, we know now that we can be more flexible than we ever imagined, finding new ways to work, innovate and serve customers — many not only in our region, but across the country and even the world. We are connected more than ever — in person and virtually — and here, at the Association, we continue to be a trusted leader when it comes to services and support that can help employers succeed. Today, your Manufacturer & Business Association is certainly well positioned to assist you, our members, during these complex times by providing exclusive, valued-added services that can help keep your operations current and prepared. From comprehensive HR and legal support, exclusive HR services and products, professional development and computer training, competitive group insurance, expert logistics services, reduced energy costs, premium meeting space, timely legislative information, thoughtprovoking business news, and premier networking opportunities, the MBA is recognized as a trusted resource

for employers across Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio and southwestern New York. That is our mission — the heart of all we do! Still, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the importance of leadership in achieving these goals. As you know in your own organizations, leaders — at every level — are integral to a company’s overall business success. No role is too small or insignificant to effect real change — and real results. It’s been said that you are only as strong as your weakest link, and effective leaders recognize this, knowing the success of the team and organization depends on everyone’s contributions. At the Association, I have had the pleasure of working with truly phenomenal business leaders and staff. They recognize that business is hard work but it’s also about working smart, and placing value on effort and

performance first. As we all know, there are no shortcuts to success. That’s why in this year’s Annual Report, it is exciting to showcase not only our Annual Event speaker Retired U.S. Navy Admiral William McRaven about taking command in leadership, but so many of our local leaders about their lessons in leadership and what it means to them. Finally, as we look forward to this year’s Annual Event and MFG Day celebration on October 13, I hope that you will take the time to really enjoy reconnecting with colleagues and friends. We have finally set sail from the storm, and the horizon has never been brighter! Best regards,

Steve Jones, MBA Chairman

More than 75 Years of Excellence in Serving the Storage Rack Market History At the end of WWII, there was a growing need to modernize and expand the nation’s warehousing capabilities. Entrepreneurial business people began to develop innovative storage rack designs to fill those needs. Company after company was springing up, headed by owners who carved out a market share by providing a high level of personal service. In recent decades, however, most of those early family owned companies have been replaced by holding companies, investment bankers or corporate raiders. Virtually no companies like Ridg-U-Rak still exist. Ridg-U-Rak was a minor player in those early years. Although limited in marketing vision and hampered by a lack of manufacturing automation, Ridg-U-Rak had some survival strengths that helped the company to continue to grow. Today, as the operation celebrates more than 75 years of serving the storage rack market, Ridg-U-Rak is commonly acknowledged as a company built on Integrity and Service, guided by the able leadership of

COMPANY PROFILE

President and CEO John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E., Vice President of Plant Operations John B. Pellegrino Jr. and Vice President of Sales and Engineering Mark E. Pellegrino. Capabilities Ridg-U-Rak now has two plants in North East, Pennsylvania, covering 160,000 square feet, with a production capacity of more than 140,000,000 pounds of finished steel products per year. With the addition in 2018 of its five-and-a-half-acre, under roof, warehouse and distribution center, Ridg-U-Rak has greatly increased the efficiency of its shipping department and freed up space for increasing manufacturing capacity at the main plant. These improvements are what contribute to it remaining one of the largest storage rack manufacturers in North America, and it is still a family owned business. One of the key contributors to the company’s success has been the increased

talent base of its staff, with the ability to completely manage large projects from design and code compliance, through manufacturing, to final installation and customer approval. Major capital investments in its manufacturing plants have been instrumental in improved productivity. Recent investments include the latest rolling mill equipment, a total shop layout re-vamping, an automated beam manufacturing line, and a 600-foot-long state-of-the-art powder coating line, which not only improves product quality, but also the company’s environmental imprint by reducing its liquid paint usage. From recycling programs to major transformations in manufacturing processes, the corporate philosophy includes doing what is necessary to meet 21st century sustainability expectations. Products Ridg-U-Rak provides an unlimited array of storage options. Whether heavy industrial storage racks for large warehouses, deep and dense storage systems like Push-Back, Drive-In, and Pick Modules, or Narrow-Aisle and Deep-Reach systems, design engineers can layout storage arrangements to meet a customer’s unique load, throughput and capacity requirements. Ridg-U-Rak also provides small storage systems for pallet loads or hand-stacked cartons, and offers replacement parts that interchange with competitive racks. Many specialty storage options are available, including a racksupported crane system to store large dies and tools. mbabizmag.com • OCTOBER 2021

OCTOBER 2021 • mbabizmag.com

They are grooming these people for the next steps in transition — to prepare for the succession of the retirees coming up.” One company, for instance, implemented employee evaluations and appraisals four times a year to identify future leaders.

“The ability to control a brain tumor and prevent its growth without surgery is very gratifying.” DANIEL MUCCIO, MD

Nonsurgical brain tumor treatments provide hope and relief. Cancer is difficult enough. But patients facing brain tumors deal with an added layer of concern. How could my treatments affect me on a fundamental level? Will they change who I am? “When I work with my brain tumor patients, I learn courage,” said Daniel Muccio, MD, a neurosurgeon at AHN Saint Vincent. “They muster so much courage to go through the procedures and face the disease.” “My philosophy is to always try and do the least invasive thing possible to address the patient’s problem,” Muccio added. Now at AHN Saint Vincent, “minimally invasive” brain tumorcare can mean avoiding surgery altogether. Muccio regularly conducts stereotactic radiosurgery — a computer — guided treatment that directs carefully controlled doses of radiation therapy to brain tumors with incredible accuracy. Procedures are normally performed on an outpatient basis, and patients can usually return to normal activities within one or two days of treatment. “The ability to control a brain tumor and prevent its growth without surgery is very gratifying,” said Muccio. “Cancer patients often have to endure multiple procedures, so being able to avoid brain surgery is welcomed by the patients, their families, and their doctors.” Noninvasive neurologic care is just one of many advanced cancer treatments available at AHN Saint Vincent. As part of the AHN Cancer Institute, Saint Vincent offers patients access to a team of cancer experts collaborating on their unique case, as well as the latest technology and the potential to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials.

Latest tech drives nonsurgical brain tumor care. Patients dealing with brain tumors in the Erie area have access to some of the most advanced technology for nonsurgical treatment. AHN Saint Vincent performs stereotactic radiosurgery using the Elekta Versa HD™ linear accelerator powered by Brainlab software. The linear accelerator delivers radiation treatment with pinpoint accuracy, so patients benefit from faster treatments and may experience immediate improvements in symptoms. The Brainlab software helps to map the brain and plan the procedure to be as effective as possible while reducing risk to surrounding tissue. The end result of the treatment is for tumors to begin shrinking. Benign tumors will likely shrink over a period of 18 to 24 months. Malignant tumors often shrink in as little as three months. The treatment time can vary, but most are performed in less than an hour.

AHN Cancer Institute chair practicing in Erie. The AHN Cancer Institute is dedicated to the research, development, and delivery of cancer care. And its chair, Dr. David Bartlett, is practicing right here in Erie. Bartlett used his passion for cancer research at the National Cancer Institute, where he focused on viral-based immunotherapy. He went on to develop new abdominal surgery techniques and is currently focused on using a specific virus to infect and destroy cancer cells. “Cancer is a unique puzzle. Figuring out how to find every cancer cell in your body and get rid of it without hurting the host is what interests me and drives me to research this disease,” Bartlett said. Bartlett practices in Erie and is excited about the resources AHN Saint Vincent offers, like advanced diagnostic imaging and robot-assisted surgery. “It’s built for comfort and convenience,” Bartlett added.

ASSOCIATION SERVICES

At the Association, these resources include everything from surveys and posters, to the MBA’s free HR & Legal Hotline, lunch and law briefings, monthly roundtable discussions, as well as complimentary subscriptions to the timely HR in Review newsletter and monthly member publication, the MBA Business Magazine. The MBA also offers the expert training and certification required for new, mid-career and executive

but also heard from all of the great guest speakers, which was definitely a plus.”

Greater Access, New Offerings

Here For You

Stacey Bruce, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, director of HR Services at the MBA, says the Association is constantly looking for ways to keep members up to date and in compliance. In fact, the MBA has been a valuable source during pandemic and recovery, utilizing its COVID-19 Resources webpage, mbausa.org/covid-19, to keep members — and even nonmembers — informed.

As Bruce explains, HR is an evolving field and professionals need to use all their skills to stay on top of new developments — and resources. “We have three certified HR professionals, as well as an on-staff labor and employment law attorney, and I believe that’s what sets us apart,” says Bruce. “When you call us, you know you are talking to an experienced team of HR professionals and an employment law attorney backing us. When it comes to HR and employment law, the MBA is a great resource to have at your fingertips.” For more information about the programs and services offered by the MBA’s HR & Legal Services Division, visit www.mbausa.org.

The MBA HR & Legal Services Team Tammy Lamary-Toman, JD, PHR, SHRM-CP Vice President/Employment Counsel ttoman@mbausa.org

Stacey Bruce, SPHR, SHRM-SCP Director of HR Services sbruce@mbausa.org

Over the past year, the MBA has enhanced many of its traditional in-person offerings — roundtables, briefings and classes — to include online options as well. The online access offers greater flexibility for those working from home or those in a location far away. “Instead of driving, they are able to attend those programs or classes at their convenience without having to travel,” states HR Consultant and Trainer Rachel Tserkovniak, SPHR. “We offer it LIVEOnline to keep it engaging and interactive, just as we do in person, so they get the best of both worlds.”

Rose Bruno, PHR, SHRM-CP HR Consultant rbruno@mbausa.org

One of the biggest additions to this online access has been the daylong MBA’s HR & Employment Law Conference on September 8. The ninth annual program, which has grown every year and attracts attendees from as far away as Pittsburgh and New York state, was moved to the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie this year to accommodate a larger audience — both in person and online.

Rachel Tserkovniak, SPHR HR Consultant and Trainer rtserkovniak@mbausa.org

“This year, we were able to hold one of the biggest conferences to date because the new venue gave attendees the opportunity to have plenty of space to gather together safely and comfortably within the same room,” says Bruce. “Our sponsors and our exhibitors not only got to network with the attendees,

116TH ANNUAL EVENT | KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Retired Navy Admiral William H. McRaven will be the keynote speaker at the Association’s 116th Annual Event on October 13 in Erie, Pennsylvania.

ADMIRAL MCRAVEN TAKES COMMAND AS 116TH ANNUAL EVENT SPEAKER 22

OCTOBER 2021 • mbabizmag.com

“The story of courage is more than about one great, shining moment. It’s also about the kind of … average … people that you meet in the course of the day: the parents who are taking care of their kids, the coaches who are teaching the young athletes, the cops who are on the streets doing their job.” — Admiral William H. McRaven in The Washington Post When Retired Navy Admiral WIlliam McRaven was a young boy growing up in Texas, he dreamed of being a superhero. He longed to put on a cape and use his superpowers to save the earth from destruction. But as he grew older and traveled the world, he found real heroes everywhere he went — and none of them had superpowers. None of them wore capes or cowls. But they all possessed qualities that gave them the power to help others, to make a difference, to save the world: courage, both physical and moral; humility; a willingness to sacrifice; and a deep sense of integrity. That is the summary of McRaven’s newest book, The Hero Code: Lessons Learned from Lives Well Lived, where he celebrates real, everyday heroes he’d met over the years, from battlefields to hospitals to college campuses, who are doing their part to save the world. McRaven, for one, knows from experience. A U.S. Navy four-star admiral, McRaven is one of the most decorated and inspiring commanders and a former chancellor of the University of Texas System — one of the largest and most respected systems of higher education in the country. And, this year, he will share his lessons in leadership as keynote speaker of the MBA’s 116th Annual Event on October 13 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie. “Given his record of service, we are honored to have Admiral McRaven give our keynote address,” states MBA President and CEO John Krahe, “and we look forward to hearing his insights on the force of teamwork and personal initiative, resilience in the face of opposition, accountability and the unconditional importance of never giving up." During his time in the military, McRaven commanded special operations forces at every level, eventually taking charge of the U.S. Special Operations Command. His career included combat during Desert Storm and both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He commanded the troops that captured Saddam Hussein and rescued cargo ship skipper Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009. McRaven is also credited with developing the plan and leading the Osama bin Laden mission in 2011. As the chief executive officer of the UT System, McRaven also oversaw 14 institutions that educated 220,000 students and employed 20,000 faculty and more than 80,000 healthcare professionals, researchers and staff. He is presently a professor of national security at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, teaching courses on contemporary policy challenges in the national security arena. McRaven is a recognized national authority on U.S. foreign policy and has advised Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and other U.S. leaders on defense issues. He currently serves on the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the

National Football Foundation, and the Board of Directors of ConocoPhillips. According to his official biography, McRaven has been recognized for his leadership numerous times. In 2011, he was the first runner-up for TIME magazine’s “Person of the Year.” In 2012, Foreign Policy magazine named McRaven one of the nation’s “Top 10 Foreign Policy Experts.” In 2014, Politico magazine named McRaven one of the “Politico 50,” citing his leadership as instrumental in cutting though Washington bureaucracy. In 2015, he received the Intrepid Freedom Award for his distinguished service in defending the values of democracy. In 2016, McRaven was named the recipient of the Ambassador Richard M. Helms Award by the CIA Officers’ Memorial Foundation and, in 2018, he received the Judge William H. Webster Distinguished Service Award for a lifetime of service to the nation. McRaven graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1977 with a degree in journalism and received his master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey in 1991. He is the author of four books including, SPEC OPS: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare and Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life and Maybe the World, based on his 2014 UT Commencement Speech that received worldwide attention. His third book, Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations, released in May 2019, is a memoir full of inspiring and action-packed stories from McRaven’s life in the special operations world. His most recent book: The Hero Code, is a code of conduct; lessons in virtues that can become the foundations of our character as we build a life worthy of honor and respect. “Admiral McRaven has a unique perspective on the world, on people and what we’re living through now,” says Krahe. “We expect it will be an address unlike any other.”

116TH ANNUAL EVENT | FEATURED STORY

Guiding

THE WAY

AREA EMPLOYERS SHARE LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

“Don’t Give Up the Ship.” It’s one of the most iconic flags in U.S. history but also a symbol of pride for those who live and grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, home of the Brig Niagara. This dramatic rallying cry was reportedly the last utterance of Captain James Lawrence as he lay dying aboard the U.S. frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Most notably, his friend and fellow commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, made this his personal battle flag during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Perry became known as the “Hero of Lake Erie” for leading American forces in a decisive naval victory over the British. His leadership aided the successful outcomes of all nine Lake Erie military campaign victories, and the victory was a turning point in the battle for the west in the war. Now, more than 200 years later, the Flagship City is not only recognized for its rich maritime history but also for its ties to manufacturing and industry, which led to the founding of the Manufacturer & Business Association in 1905. Today, Erie’s thriving business sector includes everything from technology and manufacturing companies to insurance and health care, banking and more. In this year’s Annual Report, the Business Magazine talks with several “captains” of industry and MBA members on the lessons they’ve learned when it comes to their leadership journey and organizational success — and how it guides the way.

Learning to Lead

The path to leadership isn’t always smooth sailing and from what we’ve heard from our area leaders, they couldn’t agree more. Some were inspired at an early age, while others gradually gravitated to leadership roles, cultivating their own leadership styles. Take, for instance, John Pellegrino Sr., P.E., one the most respected leaders in manufacturing in northwest Pennsylvania and president and CEO of North East, Pennsylvaniabased Ridg-U-Rak, Inc., which is one of the largest pallet rack and storage rack manufacturers in the United States. Pellegrino who grew up in the Warren-Forest County area was inspired to become an engineer while watching his father and grandfather build the railways that would support the logging industry in rural Pennsylvania. When he spotted an engineer surveying a project, and clearly standing out among the laborers, he knew it was the job for him — and passionately pursued his studies to achieve his goal. Today, Pellegrino and his management lead by setting an example. “The key to success of any organization begins with owners and executives who clearly and consistently embrace and emphasize the desired workplace culture. It is critical to lead by example. It starts at the top,” he says. “It all begins by hiring bright people with personal traits that ‘fit’ the company culture, exhibit positive attitudes and strong work ethic, and a willingness to listen and learn.” One person who fits such a role is Mark Rose, director of Aerospace Operations for Parker LORD, a diversified technology and manufacturing company with locations in northwest Pennsylvania that develops adhesives, coatings, motion management devices and sensing technologies. Growing up, Rose always had an interest in math and science — and how things were made. He took wood shop and cabinet making in high school at Fort LeBoeuf, which spurred his enthusiasm and future as a “technical” leader. “I felt like there would be a point in time in my career where I could lead technical kinds of projects and provide mentorship,” he says. “But early on in my career, I never really envisioned that I would lead a manufacturing operation on a broader scale.” Rose says that his leadership journey evolved over time.

He initially was very hands-on in his career, and it gave him the chance to understand the company’s products and processes, and gain a better understanding of the employees’ role in production. “It also helped me establish relationships with people and allow them to understand that I cared about them, our products and our processes,” he says. “I’ve always considered myself as being engaged or participative. I have more of a balance now between still staying engaged, but also trying to develop others and allow them to get that hands-on experience.” Then, there’s Jim Berlin, founder and CEO of Logistics Plus, a global logistics and supply chain solutions provider that he started in Erie with three employees and a $120,000 purchase order from General Electric in 1996. Berlin describes himself as always being a bit “unique,” although not necessarily always a leader. “Many times I was ‘the man behind the man with the gun,’ which is a great place to interact with leaders to see/learn how things work out,” he says, “and to help develop your own leadership style by watching what works and what doesn’t.” Known for his unorthodox-yet-effective leadership style, Berlin states, “I’m more of a big picture guy than a micromanager. I believe that it’s best to find good people, set the right tone and culture, and give them the freedom to be themselves. It’s about setting the mission, not telling them how to achieve it.” In fact, the idea of being a “leader” wasn’t even on Gary Schneider’s radar growing up. The CEO of Howard Industries, an architectural sign manufacturer based in Fairview Township, says he never really considered the word “leadership” at all during the time he worked with his dad (Howard Schneider) at his sign shop or later with his dad and brother (Larry). “I simply knew I wanted to have a business and grow it as best I could,” he says. In the early days, as with most new businesses, Schneider says it wasn’t so much “leading” as it was “surviving.” “Each day that was the focus, gain more business, hire more employees, make payroll, pay the bills, along with managing the up and down periods all business owners experience at times, as recently evidenced this past 18 months during the pandemic,” >

“The key to success of any organization begins with owners and executives who clearly and consistently embrace and emphasize the desired workplace culture. It is critical to lead by example. It starts at the top.” — John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E. Ridg-U-Rak, Inc. R

“Communication, honesty and being true to your word — those are indispensable. But, besides that, I think it is assembling a group of people who enjoy what they are doing, and who they are doing it with, and just laying out the vision and the motivation.” — Jim Berlin Logistics Plus, Inc. he explains. “My leadership style is to guide a team of even better leaders than me — who contribute their individual skills and attributes for the betterment of the company.” Jim Stevenson, regional president for PNC in northwest Pennsylvania, considers himself fortunate to have had teachers and coaches who helped put him in positions where he could develop his skill sets, including leadership. “I’m certainly thankful to every one of those individuals who saw something in me that I didn’t necessarily see at that time,” he says. Over the years, Stevenson has been exposed to many leadership styles, but describes his and PNC’s as “servant leadership” — putting the needs of employees first and helping people develop and perform as highly as possible. “We are there to really support and help our colleagues in whatever way is necessary to help the bank and those individuals do their best,” he adds. “At the end of the day, what I believe in terms of leadership is, if you attract the right people, provide them with the tools and training to succeed, and build an organization in which collaboration and teamwork are encouraged and promoted, individuals and teams can then flourish.” For many leaders, cultivating leadership began well before they started their careers. MacDonald Illig Jones & Britton Managing Partner Russ Warner, for one, had a close-knit extended family, and everyone was encouraged to do their best in every endeavor. “My father would tell all of us: ‘It doesn’t matter what you end up doing for a living. If you become a ditch digger, then you should try to be the best ditch digger you can be every day.’ That emphasis on seeking excellence in everything you do led all of us to have leadership roles later in life.” In his leadership role at MacDonald Illig, one of the largest law firms in northwest Pennsylvania, Warner sees his goals to be a consensus builder; to support others and help them achieve their potential; and to foster a culture where teamwork and excellence (both in the organization and as individuals) are highly valued. “I work at trying to be a good example, and to show respect and compassion for all those around me, regardless of whatever is their station or role in the organization or life,” he says. “I try to learn from my mistakes. And I look for the good in others; I’m an optimist at heart.”

Good to Great Leaders

Experts agree that effective leaders are the anchors of any great organization, often possessing a powerful mix of humility and ambition — not for themselves, but for their organizations. The area leaders we spoke to share other qualities as well. “Communication, honesty and being true to your word — those are indispensable,” says Berlin. “But, besides that, I think it is assembling a group of people who enjoy what they are doing, and who they are doing it with, and just laying out the vision and the motivation.” For 30 years, Berlin has been sharing a Thought for the Day of people who inspire him — everyone from Socrates to Dr. Seuss. “I work with, and have worked with, some very smart people,” he explains. “I try to learn from all of them. I watch how folks like Dan Lynch at GE, and Fred Rizzuto or Gretchen Seth at Logistics Plus dealt with a person, or an issue, and learn from that. But I’ve also worked with some very dumb people and, honestly, I try to learn from them too.” As many leaders can attest, part of being a great leader is also being a great listener. “I think that allows you to hear the concerns of your employees, to hear the concerns of your customers, to hear the concerns of your suppliers,” explains Rose. “You can weigh ideas, input, and make a better informed decision. You also need to be patient, not indecisive, but weigh the facts, and then make a decision in the best interest of the business at hand.” Rose says he was inspired by Bernie Farabaugh, a retired LORD plant manager. “He was a great mentor, a great sounding board, and very experienced. He taught me lots of things — how to listen, how to get people engaged, how to communicate — and it had a big influence on me.” Being knowledgeable in whatever field you’re working in is certainly important to any leadership role too. “You don’t necessarily have to be the smartest person or the most technically sound, but you have to be knowledgeable,” adds Stevenson. “I think particularly in today’s environment, the ability to promote a culture of inclusivity where diversity of thought is valued also is a critical piece. But in my view, probably the most important consideration is the manner in which a leader deals with adversity on both an individual >

and a team basis, because the folks around you are going to notice. So how you conduct yourself, how you manage through those more challenging periods, speaks to ultimately how a leader is viewed.” At PNC, Stevenson has been fortunate to be inspired by mentors, including Marlene Mosco who led the northwest PA market for 16 years prior to him assuming the role in 2016. He also points to PNC President and CEO Bill Demchack, who has led the bank through strategic acquisitions and technological innovation by being inclusive in which everyone’s views are valued. As an athlete, Stevenson also was inspired by Boston Celtics’ legend Larry Bird. “He was not the most athletic player, but he overcame some of his shortcomings and positioned himself and his teammates in the most challenging and on the biggest of stages to perform at the highest level,” he says. “We could still learn a lot from what and how he conducted himself, and how he can engaged with his teammates.” As Warner suggests, a great leader is one who earns people’s trust and respect, has integrity and puts the interests of others above their own. A great leader requires teamwork and is a team player himself/herself. Equally important: Being a mentor, a coach, and a friend; having emotional intelligence. Warner says Bob Miller, the founder of Better Baked Foods in North East, was a great inspiration to him and everyone lucky enough to get to know him. “One of his mottos was: ‘Do one more — one more kind deed, run one more mile, one more push-up, give one more minute, one more hug, one more kiss. Go above and beyond what is expected.’ Bob’s enthusiasm, drive, and positive outlook, combined with his compassion for others, was truly contagious and motivated everyone around him to want to do their best,” he says. Schneider knows the value of perseverance and recognizing other leaders when it comes to leadership. “You can’t run a business alone,” he says. “You need skilled and invested employees who are focused on adding value to the company and, in turn, receiving value from their efforts. I’ve always tried to apply the adage, ‘surround myself with people more talented and smarter than me.’ ”

Schneider admires how entrepreneur Paul Ackers started his own small business and as a means to grow and solve his companies many challenges, applied the concepts of Lean Manufacturing and Toyota Production System (TPS) as a solution. “As a result, he became an expert in Lean and has gone on to have an equally successful career as an author and teacher of Lean processes and as a Lean consultant,” he says. In his experience, Pellegrino believes good leaders exhibit a relentless focus on customer service and operational integrity. “This is critical to long-term success,” he says. “Embracing positive attitudes, emphasizing effective ‘we’ teamwork, treating people with respect, recognizing, and sharing in the success of the company and providing the support and tools employees need to be effective are the foundation to building an outstanding workplace culture.” Pellegrino who served his country proudly during the Korean War, has many inspirations when it comes to leadership, but has cited General Douglas MacArthur, one of the greatest leaders of all time. Douglas said, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.”

Lessons Learned

Being a leader is bound to bring challenges, but leadership during difficult times — or rough seas — brings its own unique set of obstacles and lessons. As American businessman John D. Rockfeller said, “I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance.” During the pandemic of 2020, government restrictions forced the majority of businesses to shutter or limit in-person operations. For many, the experience tested the limits of leadership unthinkable a year earlier. Berlin, whose Logistics Plus team helped get personal protective equipment to front-line workers and area businesses, rallied alongside them, unloading planes and packing trucks to get equipment to where it needed to go. >

“Nobody could have predicted what necessarily has transpired with the pandemic, but the flexibility to adjust has proven critical, as is empathy. In addition to a changing work environment, a lot of folks dealt with real challenges on a personal level. As leaders, I think it was critical to demonstrate a level of understanding as we supported our colleagues and teammates during such an unprecedented time.” — Jim Stevenson PNC

100% USA MADE FOR OVER 93 YEARS

“I had a mantra to focus on the positive. Let’s look at the blessing we do have. Let’s look at what is going well, and let’s celebrate and appreciates that.” — Mark Rose Parker LORD Corporation

“Something I remember that Jack Welch said once, during the economic downturn in 2008-2009, was, ‘You can crawl under the bed and suck your thumb, or you can deal with it.’ That struck home then and rang in my head when the pandemic hit,” Berlin says. “Jack Welch has provided me with lots of leadership lessons over the years.” At Parker LORD, Rose said his focus was to set the tone for his team. “I had a mantra to focus on the positive. Let’s look at the blessings we do have. Let’s look at what is going well, and let’s celebrate and appreciate that. But through COVID, we had to be consistent,” he says. “As a leader, I had to set expectations to be safe. If that meant we’re going to clean our workstation, wipe it down at the end of every day, then that’s what we had to do, and I had to do that. “If that meant we wear masks with no exceptions, that meant I wear a mask with no exceptions. If we socially distance in the lunchroom and we do one chair per table, I need to follow that. I need to set an example. We took many, many safety precautions, and by and large I think all were well followed and well respected.” Rose acknowledges that some of things weren’t always popular, “but I think if you explain why and then you demonstrate it and you set the example, that people appreciate it.” At MacDonald Illig, Warner says one of the biggest lessons was, “How so many people do truly rise to the occasion in times of great crisis, and how much they can accomplish and overcome — even during the worst crisis — when they work together, maintain some flexibility and patience, and keep their focus during the storm.”

As Schneider points out, a good leader needs a great team to support them. “That support will allow a business to adjust, adapt and implement the change needed to address whatever daily challenges are placed in front of you,” he says. Stevenson echoes those sentiments. “Nobody could have predicted what necessarily has transpired with the pandemic, but the flexibility to adjust has proven critical, as is empathy,” he says. “In addition to a changing work environment, a lot of folks dealt with real challenges on a personal level. As leaders, I think it was critical to demonstrate a level of understanding as we supported our colleagues and teammates during such an unprecedented time.” Pellegrino, like many of his counterparts, was proud to be able offer some economic stability to the community during the pandemic — as Ridg-U-Rak always has. At Ridg-U-Rak, “We are focused on our business one day at a time… but with a keen eye to our future and a willingness to adjust and adapt, as the winds of change evolve as they have for many years.”

Developing the Next Generation of Leaders

Many area leaders agree that a perfect storm or crisis, such as COVID-19, can reveal the strength of leadership in an organization. But it can also highlight what is needed in the next generation of leadership as well. According to Berlin, when Logistics Plus looks for leaders, it looks for those who excel in communication skills, problem solving and being good with people. “It’s not via resume or degree,” states Berlin. “We have leaders in our company who manage $30, $40, $50 million dollar ‘businesses’ under the LP umbrella. Almost none >

“In a small business, it’s not hard to see who offers/contributes something more than is expected or who shows more interest, offers more time, or applies more effort. It does not matter gender, age or experience, that ‘more’ indicates the potential of an individual’s character for leadership waiting to be developed.” — Gary Schneider Howard Industries

of them have MBAs. (They do have PHDs though — poor, hungry, driven).”

‘more’ indicates the potential of an individual’s character for leadership waiting to be developed.”

Berlin explains that several of Logistics Plus’ leaders came from food service industry (and they were store managers, waitresses or bartenders not executives). Why? “Because one thing I have learned in life is that business, in the end, is all about people, especially a service business like we are in,” Berlin says. “And what better lesson in dealing with people and communicating and making friends, than working at a bar, or resolving a customer’s issue who thinks their steak is too well done … You learn how to solve problems and to make the customer happy, or at least feel like their problem was addressed.”

His advice to the next generation of leaders: “Be open to doing more than is expected of you, and you will stand out to others and succeed in all you do.”

Berlin’s advice to future leaders: Communication and learning. “The service business should be easy. You solve people’s problems with courtesy and respect, but it is so rare these days,” he says. “Just doing that will win you customers and fans, and by doing that others will follow your lead (thereby making you a leader).” When it comes to identifying future leaders, Parker LORD has a more formal process tied to its succession planning. Monthly meetings are held to review new and emerging leaders — those who are up and coming talent. It’s an established frequency of review, and gives people visibility at higher levels of leadership. They are typically engaged and communicate well, and carry projects from start to finish. Rose’s advice to those potential leaders: Listen well. Be eager to learn. Volunteer or take on a project or be part of a project to learn something. “The more skills you acquire and the more experience you get, the more engaged you are,” he says. “There is a wealth of knowledge, especially if you can gain that knowledge from individuals who could be retiring or could be transitioning into a new role. It gives you an opportunity to take on skills that you can display next week, next month, next year in your own career.” At Howard Industries, the company utilizes a standard performance review process for gauging potential leaders. “However, in a small business, it’s not hard to see who offers/ contributes something more than is expected or who shows more interest, offers more time, or applies more effort,” says Schneider. “It does not matter gender, age or experience, that

At Ridg-U-Rak, continued success is accomplished by creating a positive work environment and emphasizing continuous high-performance levels to its customers. “Through investment back into the company, coupled with a positive culture and empowered employees, you have the foundation for success,” says Pellegrino. “Now, leaders can set goals and objectives, get out of the way and watch success happen.” At PNC, Stevenson says he is looking for individuals who are excellent in their performance in their current functions and how those same individuals engage with colleagues and clients within and outside their business teams and units. Equally important is self-awareness in how they carry themselves, both within the bank and outside of the bank, and how they do in terms of leading either small groups or accepting and managing tasks when given additional responsibilities. Stevenson’s advice for future leaders: “Strive for excellence. Actively seek and identify others in leadership positions whose styles and approaches may appeal to you. Engage with people whose backgrounds and experiences are different than yours and be thoughtful around identifying core principles that will guide you during both good and challenging periods. Stay true to yourself because teammates and colleagues will and do notice.” As Warner explains, MacDonald Illig identifies future leaders by putting them in roles and situations where they will have the opportunity to learn, grow and be challenged. “Expose them to good role models and to a variety of new and more difficult experiences, and empower them by giving them more responsibility in an incremental way.” Warner’s advice to the next generation of leaders: “Do the right thing — even when it is the most difficult thing (which it often is).” He adds, “Be a lifetime learner. A very wise person once told me: ‘If you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room.’ ” And, just like Oliver Hazard Perry: Don’t give up the ship!

MFG Day 2021 Returns to Bayfront Locco Award Winners to Be Recognized

The eighth annual MFG Day celebration is back, bigger and better than ever! This year, the event returns on October 13 to the Bayfront Convention Center (BCC) in Erie where more than 1,000 students, teachers administrators, business and community leaders will be attending in person for what organizers anticipate will be the largest audience of “future manufacturers” attending to date. “We had a phenomenal response to our virtual event last year, but there is nothing like experiencing MFG Day in person,” said John Krahe, president and CEO of the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA), which presents the event, along with Career Street, NWPA National Tooling and Machining Association, Harbor Creek School District and dozens of sponsors. “We are excited for our manufacturers and local businesses to be able to reconnect with students and share what manufacturing is about, and why it’s important.” MFG Day is an amazing exhibition of innovation, technology and career opportunities in today’s manufacturing industry. This is accomplished thanks to a combination of manufacturers, vendors, high school and higher education institutions providing more than 60 exhibits, programs and demonstrations that are designed for participants to experience innovative manufacturing technology in a hands-on, interactive environment. In addition, the event

will feature an address by Patrick Stimpert, vice president of operations for The Matic Group in Seneca, Pa., and 30-to-40 minute educational breakout sessions where students will hear from and have the opportunity to interact with innovative experts in their fields. “MFG Day is one of the best educational opportunities outside of the classroom. Students get to learn about the unlimited possibilities of working in a high-energy, innovative, rewarding and exciting environment that yields high-paying jobs and continually challenges the mind,” says Krahe. “We believe that by working together, we can promote the importance of a robust and innovative manufacturing industry — the most powerful force behind our nation’s economy, which continues to provide outstanding career opportunities for our young people.” In addition to learning opportunities, this year’s MFG Day celebration will also be a chance to honor the region’s Patrick R. Locco Scholarship Award winners and nominees. The Locco Awards, which are named in honor of the late Association Vice President Patrick R. Locco, a strong advocate of vocational education, were created in 1972 (then known as the Golden Watch Awards) with the sole purpose to recognize outstanding high school students who distinguish themselves in the pursuit of technical and academic excellence. To be considered for this prestigious honor, students must apply and be nominated by a teacher. Each school then narrows the

nominees to their top candidates. Students are then interviewed by local businesspeople who ultimately choose the winners. “We recognize the value and importance of technical and vocational education,” says Krahe. “These are some of the best and brightest students in our region, and we can’t wait to give them their moment to shine.” For more information or to download the MFG Day App, visit www.mbausa.org.

INNOVATION IN WATER MANAGEMENT Since 1987 ProChemTech has been developing the cutt ing edge technologies in water management that has made us a leader in the industry. As a Pennsylvania-based business, ProChemTech knows what PA manufacturers need in their water and wastewater management programs. We make all of our own chemicals and a lot of our equipment: this ensures that the quality is high and costs are local. ProChemTech’s innovative green solutions are considered standards in the field of water and wastewater management. We believe in the philosophy of “reduce, reuse, recycle” and have worked to develop solutions for cooling towers and boilers that not only reuse and recycle water, but that also reduce operating costs. ProChemTech understands that while every business is different and that unique problems require individual solutions, reliability also matters. Considering this, we’ve expanded the square footage of our Brockway-based chemical manufacturing plant to better serve our customers by ensuring dependable chemical production and enabling faster product delivery. These plant modifications allow for more on-site storage of raw materials, helping to prevent the supply chain difficulties that so many businesses are currently facing. We’re always solving problems: if the solution doesn’t yet exist, we’ll work to invent one!

IN MEMORIAM

MBA REMEMBERS CONTRIBUTIONS OF LONGTIME LEADERS The Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA) is proud to honor the memory of two longtime leaders who passed away over the past year — Robert Flynn Strayer of ERIE Strayer Company and Sydney Smith of the former Union City Chair Company. The MBA extends its deepest condolences to the Strayer family and team of ERIE Strayer on the passing of Robert F. Strayer on October 7, 2020. He was 74. Following in the footsteps of his father, the late Hamilton W. Strayer, a former chairman of the MBA Board of Governors, and grandfather George Hamilton Strayer, Robert Strayer was the former president and chief executive officer of ERIE Strayer Company located at 1851 Rudolph Avenue. The company has been a fourth-generation, family owned leader in the design, engineering and manufacturing of concrete batch plants since 1912. The company remains under the direction of the Strayer family as it has for the last century with Strayer’s son, Kyle, succeeding him as president and CEO. During his tenure at the company, Robert Strayer’s leadership and unrelenting perseverance propelled ERIE Strayer to the top of its industry. “Bob especially found joy and took pride in working alongside his son, Kyle, over the last 10 years,” stated one tribute. “Bob cared tremendously for his ERIE Strayer family and always put them at the forefront of his decisions.”

Robert F. Strayer, ERIE Strayer Company

According to Kyle Strayer, his father relished the battle with competitors to win each order and had a tremendous feel for what it would take to do just that under all kinds of economic and business circumstances. “He refused to accept losing any order and would continue to fight for it until the very end,” he said. “My dad exemplified this same strength, courage and unwillingness to give up throughout his recent medical battle.” MBA President and CEO John Krahe also recognized Robert Strayer for his commitment to his family and business. “Bob will be remembered for his loyalty, his dedication and his competitive spirit,” Krahe said. “We are deeply saddened by his passing and are grateful for his many contributions to not only his industry but also the NWPA business community.” Robert Strayer served on various boards and worked closely with industry associates including the MBA, UPMC Hamot Foundation, American Concrete Pavement Associate, Concrete Plant Manufacturers Bureau and Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. He was a longtime member of the Kahkwa Club, Erie Club and the Erie Yacht Club, as well. Robert Strayer’s brother Hamilton G. Strayer, who retired from ERIE Strayer, also passed away in 2020. Robert is survived by his wife, Susan Fish Strayer; daughter, Shelby Strayer Roberts, and her husband, Brad; son, Kyle Flynn Strayer, and his wife, Lally; along with several grandchildren.

______________________________

In addition, the MBA recognizes the legacy and contributions of Sydney Smith of Union City, who passed away August 23, 2021. He was 83. Smith, who served on numerous committees and area boards, had served as president of the former Union City Chair Company and served as former chairman of the MBA Board of Governors from 1993 to 1994. “Sid was well respected within the northwest Pennsylvania business community and was instrumental in helping to grow the MBA (then the Manufacturers Association of Northwest Pennsylvania) during his time on the Board,” stated Krahe. “Anyone who was fortunate to know Sid knew what a good person he was and how much he cared for his family and community. He was generous and funny, but also a great listener and a great leader. We can learn from the example he set.” Smith, who was born April 13, 1938, is also known as a globetrotter, traveling the to seven continents and dozens of countries, making personal connections around the world. He is also known regionally for his penchant for music and his barbershop quartet, which performed at the Association’s Annual Event.

Sydney Smith, Former Union City Chair Company

Smith is survived by his wife, Louise, who attended many Annual Events with him over the years, as well as their children Barry Smith (Traci Jackson), Amy Bracken (Bill) and Linda Smith (Bjorn Haugland, Christi Dahlkemper), many grandchildren, family and friends.
