We were in Springfield for lunch March 9th with members in the area. There were about sixteen gathered around the table for good food and good conversation. The Springfield Brewing Co. provided us with a great venue, comfy chairs for those who arrived early and sampled the brewery’s several beers. The sun was out and the temps in the 60’s really made it feel like spring. I had the opportunity to meet with members I had seen on previous trips to Springfield and some new faces as well. The highlight of the day had to be the mystery of the “Other W111”. I was seated next to John Olgivy, who with his wife Dee, have a wonderful 1967 W111 convertible which they’ve brought to KC in the past. John asks me, do I know of another W111 in Springfield? He then tells me the story of seeing another one in Springfield, just like his, one day while out driving around. Shortly after this, I made my way around the table to visit with some of the other members, including Steve Nieman. Steve has been a member for many years, however this was his first club event. I asked about his Mercedes, and as he told me about it, I shared Steve Nieman and his son show their John’s story with him. He looked at me and 280SE which has been in the family for said “that’s MY car”. Well, I gave a shout out generations. to John, “hey John, I found the other W111!”. Photo by Mark Moody Before you know it, they’re discussing their cars, and having a great time. So you never know what may happen when we all get together.

President’s Message Greetings Benz Friends!

Mark Moody, President Photo by Morgan Klepac

Spring is here! Time to shine up our favorite machines and hit the road. Once again we’re planning to host a defensive driving and autocross event, in June. This year we’re making the event free to licensed drivers 20 years of age and under. This is a great opportunity to get some practical experience with your vehicle and develop driving skills that may save your life. Keep an eye on the website and this newsletter for additional details. I just got back from Springfield Mo, where I had the chance to get together with several of our section members there. We had a great lunch at the Springfield Brewing Co. and had a great time talking to everyone there, including some long time members who had not attended a club event before. Have you been getting our newsletter and wondered if you would enjoy one of our events? Come see your fellow club members at our next event and get acquainted. I think you’ll be glad you did. Mark Moody President Mercedes-Benz Club of America | Kansas City Section

John Ryan Midwest Regional Director As a self-proclaimed “car guy” for as long as I can remember, and a member of numerous enthusiast organizations throughout the years, it wasn’t until joining Mercedes-Benz Club of America, that I found myself “engaged” as an auto enthusiast. Starting with our first breakfast meeting back in 2000, my wife and I both, cherish the memories, friends and experiences we’ve shared as members of MBCA. While a member of the Kansas City Section the past thirteen years, I’ve had the opportunity to “grow” in my membership experience and have served as Section President, Vice President, Webmaster, and member of our section’s Board of Directors. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to participate in our section’s growth and exposure. Along with other great members of the Kansas City Section, we’ve hosted a national MBCA event, (Mid-America Caravan), two MBCA Midwest Region events, (MBCAKC|DD/AX), and nearly fifty social, technical, driving and concours events each year, earning our section the honor Donna and John Ryan. Our own John Ryan is the of MBCA Section of the Year, while under my leadership. At the national level in the club, I’ve served on the forum new MBCA Midwest Regional Director, serving our moderator team of mbca.org, attended national board meetings, and Kansas City Section as well as the Iowa Hawkeye, attended national events. I attended the MBCA President’s workshop/ Twin Cities, Wisconsin, Chicagoland and Central Illinois sections. seminar, and the MBCA Concours d’Elegance Judging School. Photo by Bob Smith On a professional level, I’ve spent over thirty years in a custom manufacturing/printing and publishing business, most recently as the plant manager of one of the largest commercial printers in the Midwest. Fiscal responsibility, lean manufacturing principles, and contract negotiating skills are all included in my toolbox. I believe that the combination of these experiences could prove to be a valuable asset to our National Board of Directors. Having been part of the driving force and leadership of one of the stronger and more visible sections of MBCA, I believe that I can share the “secrets” of a great section, to help nurture and grow other sections in the Midwest Region and beyond. At the national level, my business exposure and experience could provide valuable feedback and insight into publishing, distribution, business management, contract negotiation, and more. I’ve enjoyed being part of our organization these past thirteen years. It has been interesting to watch its evolution and change, as outside influences like the economy, world trade, the auto industry, social media and other uncontrollable events shape and shake up our vision. I believe that our organization must continue to offer a product and experience that is equally as diverse as the unique membership that it represents. I am looking forward to being part of the team that insures that it does.

Tom Strongman Guest Speaker at March Breakfast by Bob Smith

Tom Strongman, automotive feature writer for the Kansas City Star, was our guest speaker at the March membership breakfast. Tom told us a story about his adventure on a cross-country trek in an old Lola that was converted to electric motor power. The car had chain drive to one rear wheel. The car was the work of the students of MINDDRIVE. The students come to MINDDRIVE from DeLaSalle Charter School, The University Academy Charter School, Alta Vista Charter School, Center High School and Shawnee Mission East High School. The trek began in San Diego California, continued to San Antonio, Texas and on to Florida. They traveled 75 to 90 miles on one battery charge. They traveled with six support vehicles. At San Antonio they took the car to the Bridgestone tire test track, an 8-mile oval course. They drove 60 miles at 40 mph and achieved equivalent of 225 mpg. Then they switched tires to compare different rolling resistances of tires, but the chain broke during the test and it never was finished. On the tour they made scheduled stops at various schools Tom Strongman, Left, Automotive Feature Writer, along the way and visited with auto tech. students while charging the with Kevin Arburn and Mark Moody at the March batteries. breakfast meeting. The car will be in Kansas City at the Art of the Car Show Photo by Bob Smith June 23 of this year. Famous racecar drivers Sterling Moss and Denise McCluggage will be here to talk about their experiences with the late Masten Gregory, the “KC Flash” as he was known then, a native KC formula car driver who won the 1966 LeMans among other achievements. Tom also told us of his thoughts on the future of the automobile as a result of the government mandate for fuel mileage of 50 mpg by 2025. This will cost a lot of money, with the need for new manufacturing processes, etc. And, Tom predicts there will be many unintended consequences.

MBCA National President Steve Dierks, attended the March breakfast meeting. Here he and his wife Barbara, catch up on the news from Dudley Smith and Bob Del Popolo. Photo by Bob Smith Members listen to Tom Strongman at the March breakfast meeting. Photo by Bob Smith

NTB Discount is Confirmed

Complete Garage

Bob Del Popolo advised that he recently purchased tires from NTB for his daughter (non MB) using the club discount and our mentioned number (#913-660-8439) that John Ryan established several years ago. Therefore, the NTB discount notification is being returned to the newsletter beginning this issue. Bob deserves credit for clearing up a misunderstanding because last winter we were told at two different NTB stores that the discount was not in force anymore. But, it is indeed available, but only at the 119th & Metcalf store in Overland Park. The new contact name at the 7333 West 119th St. 66213 store is Corey Ross - Manager 913.338.5030. Just mention the number above and that you are with the KCMBCA.

An Artist and Craftsman Brings Life to a 1918 Ford Dealership By Bob Smith

Dean Weller of DeSoto, Kansas, and his wife Delores, own an old building in the downtown section of town that beginning in 1918, had been a Ford dealership for many years. The Weller’s bought the place about 30 years ago after Dean retired from his home-building career in and around DeSoto. He uses the building, which still has the Ford Sales and Service signs on its front, as a workshop and garage/museum for his hobby of building and restoring old cars. Inside you will see the results of his genius. The workmanship and craftsmanship of the restored and rebuilt vehicles is incredibly good. Never starting a project without a plan, Dean carefully draws and catalogs each part as he takes it apart so that it can be correctly reassembled. His drawings are exquisitely detailed rivaling the most elaborate draftsman or graphic artists ability. Dean has rebuilt some of the vehicles using his own imagination rather than following a perfect replication of the original. He crafted metal body parts, fenders hood, doors, etc from scratch. He also crafted wooden bodies that have look and feel of fine furniture. But, possibly the most unique and imaginative restoration Dean has made is a Ford Model A with a body made wrought iron rods shaped into the original shape of the body. The white painted iron rods are curled into spirals, hearts, and the cursive letters of “Americas Sweetheart Model A Ford” spelled across the hood and rumble seat closure. The engine is in plain sight under the hood. The fenders in original condition are painted a gleaming black. It is a beautiful artistic creation. And, besides the finished vehicles, he has just about every part he would need stacked in corners, on shelves or hung from the ceiling. At the age of 87, Dean is not slowing down. He completes a car at the rate of about one per year. Photos by Bob Smith
