Greetings Benz Friends, I’ve just returned from Star Tech in Birmingham Alabama. It was a great event, with lots to see and do, and a great opportunity to make new friends as well as get reacquainted with old ones. My SL and I logged nearly 1,400 miles without any serious trouble. Our board of directors and I have been busy planning more events this summer. Including our upcoming defensive driving and autocross event on the 15th of June. We’ll also be planning more Sunday Drives, the return of the Smith Rallye and more great events throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you there!

Kansas City Automotive Museum Will Shine on the Rich Automotive Heritage of the Greater Kansas City Area By Bob Smith
Our guest speaker at the May breakfast was Jeff Wagoner, President of the Kansas City Automotive Museum, Inc. Jeff described the concept of the museum, which is only now in its very beginnings. The museum is to preserve all aspects of the Greater Kansas City automotive heritage, to showcase classic cars owned by Kansas Citians and to celebrate our enthusiast community. A 20,000 to 50,000 square foot building is envisioned to house constantly changing displays of historically significant and classic vehicles that are privately owned by citizens of the region. The space will also be used for special events and car club meetings, a children’s area gift shop and administrative offices. Greater Kansas City is the largest metropolitan area not having an automotive museum. No other Metro city has all three of General Mark Moody, greets Jeff Wagoner (right) President of the Kansas City Automotive Museum, Inc. Motors, Ford and Harley Davidson manufacturing vehicles. Detroit is Mr Wagoner was the guest speaker at the May the only other city with so many vehicle manufacturers. Kansas City’s breakfast meeting. auto manufacturing history dates to 1912 when Ford established a Photo by Bob Smith factory to build the Model-T in the West Bottoms. Then, Armco Steel opened in the Kansas City area, to supply materials to Ford. Currently there is a fundraising campaign to raise start-up capital. Individual donors, corporate sponsors and grassroots financial support will be required to raise the needed capital. A state-of-the-art facility could cost about $13,000,000. Locations around the Union Station area or in the Kansas Speedway area are possible sites for the museum. You can be part of the endeavor in many ways. Become a member of the support group, lend your classic vehicle to be proudly displayed at the museum, donate a vehicle or automotive memorabilia for display or sale with proceeds benefiting the museum, or become a financial supporter.

From Around the Benz… By John Ryan, Director, Midwest Region Mercedes-Benz Club of America Having been active in the Kansas City Section for a number of years, I have become aware that a variety of events and activities are necessary to reach our members’ varied interests. After a little research, I was amazed at the different types of events being held for MBCA members throughout our Midwest Region. I plan on participating in a few of these events in the upcoming months, and would encourage others to do so, too. I’ve compiled a short list below; a sampling of the events our neighboring sections are hosting the next few months. If you need additional information, please contact the section (section websites are listed at mbca.org), or let me know, and I can put you in touch with the organizers. • June 15 - MBCA DD/Autocross Weekend, Independence, MO Kansas City •
June 15 – Spring Fling Drive and Brunch, Lake Waconia, MN Twin Cities
•
June 23 – Show, Tell & Drive Rallye, Lake Zurich, IL Chicogoland
•
July 15 - Spaßnacht, Governor Stumpy’s in Brookside Kansas City
•
July 21 – Sunday Scavenger Rally, Valley Vineyard, MN Twin Cities
•
August 17 – Clean Car Show, Wapsipinicon State Park, IA Iowa Hawkeye
•

I find it refreshing to visit MBCA members in other sections. It’s always great to find a new Benz Buddy, but, being able to share ideas and compare notes with folks just like us, makes the whole club experience a more valuable one.
