2018 COLLEGE FOR KIDS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Preschool Activities

(KIDS 105)

(Ages 3-5, MUST be toilet trained) Traditional preschool activities will offer a week of learning friendship skills, the four basic shapes, colors, numbers and hands-on theme related activities planned just for preschoolers. There will be songs, stories, snacks, crafts, music and more. There will be a snack each day, so if your child has a food allergy, let us know.

HIGH FIVES

(KIDS 975)

(Age 5, Entering Kindergarten in the fall) Includes more advanced activities for 5 year olds who will enter kindergarten in the fall. Concepts include: days of the week, months, the alphabet, counting, simple math and patterns. We will draw, write, cut and glue, paint and work on art projects. There will be a snack each day, so if your child has a food allergy, let us know.

BABYSITTING BASICS

(KIDS 200)

(Bring $7 lab fee to first class) Learn what to do in an emergency or in case of illness: how to prevent accidents, playing with children of various ages, selecting safe toys and games and how to dress, diaper and feed infants. Upon completion, students receive a certificate from the American Safety and Health Institute.

BEACH DAYS

(KIDS 410)

Enjoy a five-day beach sensory themed week as we dig into moon sand and create sand slime. Each student will participate in building the strongest floating boat and also create their own clay seashells to take home. We will compete in a beachvolleyball game and a beach-hockey match. At the end of the week, we will conclude with a picnic, making beach bum Chex mix and an ocean float drink. Let us know of any allergies.

COOKING WITH SCIENCE

(KIDS 363)

Do you have an appetite for science? In this class, we will explore cooking through hands-on science experiments. Students will eat their way through various exciting learning opportunities using elements like matter, solar power and many more fun interactive projects. Come hungry and ready to taste test this week.

CRAZY CHEMICAL CONCOCTIONS

(KIDS 212)

Bring out the mad scientist. Join us as we learn the principles of chemistry while experimenting with ordinary household items. Come discover how and why ordinary supplies like vinegar, lemon juice, salt, sugar and glue can create bubbling, oozing, slimy substances sure to gross out your parents. We’ll have a world of fun while learning chemistry basics.

DESTINATION OUTER SPACE

(KIDS 412)

Need to get away for the week? Come on a spectacular space adventure. Join us as we reach for the stars blasting off to see what the universe holds. We’ll be exploring the galaxy; investigating the planets, studying constellations and searching for life beyond Earth.

EXPERIMENT WITH THE BRAIN

(KIDS 323)

Explore the wonderful world of the human brain. Find out what part of your brain helps you talk, think, smell and feel. Answer questions to find out if you are right brained or left brained. We will talk about traumatic brain injury and why you need helmets and seat belts. Design and build a “helmet” for a pseudo-brain (raw egg) and drop it from a significant height to test your design. All age levels will get to dissect an actual sheep brain.

MATH ON THE MOVE

(KIDS 347)

This class goes way beyond pencils & worksheets. We will review math skills, play math games and get moving as we solve problems. The problems you’ll solve will get you moving and thinking. Did you ever think you could do math AND have a ton of fun? Sign up for this class and you can.

ROLLER COASTERS AND ROCKETS

(KIDS 367)

Join us designing and building contraptions that are wild, crazy, or simply defy logic. As young engineers, we will build our own mini marble roller coasters, slingshot UFO helicopters, create unique skewer structures and shoot rockets into the sky. It’ll be a blast.

STEM OLYMPICS

(KIDS 413)

Go for the “gold” with Olympic event themed engineering challenges. Use the principles of gravity, inertia and friction to build the fastest bobsled tracks and ski slopes. Design streamlined javelins that will accurately hit targets. Create buoyant miniature kayaks that will navigate rushing waters and serpentine tracks. These STEM adventures will immerse campers in the science behind Olympic competition.

TECH KIDS (KIDS 414) For kids who love cool tech. If you are a computer whiz kid who loves coding, lives on the computer, wants to learn about robotics, light-up Spheros and making things with a 3-D printer, then this class is for you. Develop your creativity while coding robots, building things with circuitry kits and constructing objects with 3-D printers.

THE INCREDIBLE ENGINEER —MOTHER EARTH

(KIDS 415)

From spiders to butterflies to beetles, discover the insect world around you. Get up close and personal with several insect species while learning about their unique behaviors and skills. We will learn about why these tiny creatures make great earth mates to us humans.

We will discover the true architectural engineering created by the earth itself. We will examine how STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) can be found in its purest form in the world all around us, while exploring plants, animals, living and nonliving things. Join us as we create recycled paper with nature accents, grow fascinating plants and fungus on rocks and water beads, and examine the jungle that is our backyard. Adventure awaits. Get outside and explore.

CULTURAL COOKING FOR KIDS

WACKY AND WEIRD ART

CREEPY CRAWLY LABORATORY

(KIDS 411)

(KIDS 369)

Do you enjoy cooking and learning about new things? Then this is the course for you. Learn to make foods from a different part of the world each day to eat and enjoy. In addition to cooking, we get to learn a little about each culture through dance, videos, and other exciting activities. Create your own personal cookbook of your favorite meals.

(KIDS 416

Explore the world of art from a whole new perspective. Some of the world’s best artists had very unique and unusual ways of creating. You will be painting upside down like Michelangelo, using wacky tools to paint like Vincent van Gogh and using marbles and Hot Wheels cars to paint like Jackson Pollock. Come be weird with us and create some true works of art while having a blast.

WATERCOLOR ART

(KIDS 386)

Experience the fun of painting with liquid watercolors. Students will learn basic techniques of this medium as well as develop their drawing skills and explore their creativity. By the end of the week, each student will bring home a portfolio of their own masterpieces.

WILD WEATHER

(KIDS 417)

Do you know what happens when the sky turns dark? Come test your knowledge about different weather patterns through hands-on science experiments. You will make rain clouds, learn about warm and cold fronts, create a tornado in a jar and many more exciting activities.

SEWING WITH MOM Jump right in to this new adventure, learn to sew with your Mom. Discover basic hand and machine skills. Explore how to thread and use a sewing machine, understand pattern pieces and sew on buttons. The weekly projects are simple and designed so you understand the process of construction. The adult is getting a “sewing refresher” along the way and will be hands-on in class for guiding the young student with operating a sewing machine and ironing. Complete your projects at home, and spend quality time together while learning. Projects planned will include a pillowcase, pajama bottom, simple tote bag and a doll or teddy bear outfit. The instructor is Debra Carlson. Go to mccneb.edu/ce for a supply list. Only the child needs to register. (Ages 8-11) Elkhorn Valley Campus, 829 N 204th Street KIDS 120-90 SA 7/7-7/28 9:00A-12:00P
