Blair Public Library, 2233 Civic Drive, Blair, NE The Blair Public Library and Technology Center combines modern technology, expanded collection and staff areas, and multi-use meeting spaces. The 27,000 square-foot facility provides 4,500 square feet of public gathering and meeting spaces, including a technology-rich conference room, a warming kitchen, public restrooms and 1,800 square feet of sub-dividable meeting space. All can be accessed separately from the library for after-hours use. Unique library spaces include a 1,000 square-foot art exhibit space, and a 500 square-foot Makerspace with digital media, recording, 3-D printing and scanning, and a variety of other creative opportunities.

Opened in 2007, the center includes 11 classrooms, computer labs, student services and a modern Certified Nursing Assistant lab. Additionally, the center anchors the Data Center Management program; a data center lab connects students physically and digitally to courses. The Data Center Career Academy gives high school students the opportunity to tackle special topics in IT.

MCC has a long tradition of offering developmental education services that assist students who are at a pre-college level attain the skills necessary to be successful in college-level coursework. This focus is emphasized through a commitment to student success, studentcentered learning and teaching excellence. ESL: MCC Adult Education provides noncredit ESL classes for literacy level, non-English speaking students. The classes focus on basic English and survival English skills. Students who can already communicate in English should consider continuing to improve their English speaking and writing skills in credit classes. We have six different ESL levels. Once a student has completed level six, a variety of options will be available depending upon each unique situation.

Launch your career Earn and Learn Program: The first component of preparing you for job success. Align your skills with the job you are working for. Work readiness will help with: • Interviewing • Resume building • Workplace ethics and behavior • Goal setting • Basic computer skills • Effective communication • National career readiness certification Tutoring: Tutoring is available for GED students on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-noon. Read Right tutoring is offered to enrolled students, Monday through Friday for drop in tutoring from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Conversation Partners: Conversation Partners is a great way for students and community members who are working toward improving their English. Bring on the holidays with colorful, fusible glass. This great activity lets you select your project. Choose from jewelry, ornaments or small dishes. The fun begins while you collage with glass to create your own, one-ofa-kind piece. Learn some tricks and design skills and then jump right into creating. NEW! String Art Workshop: Merry and Bright Tree Sign String art is an arrangement of string strung between nails to form patterns or designs on a wooden board. String art has its origins in the “curve stitch” activities invented by Mary Everest Boole at the end of the 19th century. It was popularized as a decorative craft in the late 1960s through kits and books and has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last few years. Complete a holiday design on an 11x20 inch piece of wood stained and sealed. A rope hanger will be attached at the end of class. Students will string a tree with a star and stencil paint the words “merry” and “bright” with snowflakes. All supplies are included. Cider, eggnog and cookies will be provided. *Festival of Lights & Santa Maria Winery Requirement: moderate walking Spend a special day in northwestern Iowa creating special holiday memories. Visit an 1869 Victorian mansion, the Dodge House, honored as a National Historic Landmark. INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT FEATURING: BETH O’HANLON Beth O’Hanlon received her bachelor’s degree with a dual major in Art History and Studio. This education has served her well in her professional pursuits because it has given her a dual approach to understanding and sharing art. O’Hanlon later returned to school and earned her teaching certificate in Art K-12 and Gifted Education K-12. She has taught art classes in public schools and art history at the University of Cincinnati, Metropolitan Community College and Southeast Community College. O’Hanlon enjoyed mentoring gifted students with Lincoln Public Schools and has now earned her Master’s Degree in Gifted Education and is currently facilitating gifted education at Omaha Public Schools. O’Hanlon’s studio work has been rewarding with multiple solo exhibitions in painting and many group exhibitions in sculpture and painting. She has been showing her work in galleries for more than 20 years including nature centers and charity events. O’Hanlon has found these to be highly rewarding and she is encouraged that art has a community purpose beyond classroom education. In 2000, she joined the Nebraska Arts Association, Artists in Schools and Communities Program. O’Hanlon brings many years of art and teaching experience to her business, Adventure in Art. Learn the basics of designing and casting a piece of jewelry using the sand cast method. You will start with a brief lesson of the process, followed by a discussion on proper design strategies and implementations to ensure a good casting as well as a wax tool overview. If you’re planning to participate in the 4-H dog program, this is the place for you. Whether it’s your first year or final year in 4-H, discover detailed and precision skills that you can practice year-round to improve your performance in the 4-H ring. Your dog will be practicing recalls, leash manners as well as learning “sit” and “down” on command and staying in a sit and down position with controlled distractions. Build on these basic skills to train precision heeling, teach about rally cards, discuss questions that a judge may ask in showmanship, as well as ways you can practice for agility. At the first class, your dog must be wearing a buckle collar. Your dog will also need a 4-6 ft. leather or nylon leash (flexi-leads, chain leashes and harnesses are not permitted). Sewing with Mom

A beginning sewing class for ages 8-11 and an adult to learn basic hand and machine skills. Students will learn how to thread and use a sewing machine, understand pattern pieces, sew on buttons and install a zipper. The weekly projects are simple and designed to help students understand the process of construction. The adult is getting a “sewing refresher” along the way and will be hands-on in class for guiding the young student with operating a sewing machine and ironing. Introduction to Roblox Game Creation

Pages is a wonderful, easy-to-learn word processing program preloaded with exciting features and tools that take word processing to an entirely different level of computing. Requirement: moderate to extensive walking Join Kevin Kowskie to witness the world’s largest concentration of Sandhill Cranes from the banks of the Platte River in south central Nebraska. Every year during March and early April, more than 500,000 Sandhill Cranes along with hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese converge on the Platte River Valley. You’ll meet experienced staff guides of the Nebraska Nature Center and Fort Kearney Historical State Park during this tour. Each of these sites are located right in the heart of this magnificent sandhill crane staging area where the birds can be viewed in the fields and in gatherings on their roosts along the Platte River. Your first stop is the Crane Trust Nature Center in Wood River, Nebraska, which provides a place where you can connect to nature along the Platte River. For lunch, enjoy a buffet at the Alley Rose with an entrée, several side dishes, salad bar and dessert. In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Nebraska Arts, home to the state’s only collection of art created solely by Nebraskans. Federal Aviation Administration released new regulations requiring anyone flying or operating a small unmanned aircraft system (drone) under 55 lbs. for commercial purposes is required to be FAA Certified Remote Pilot. This nine-hour course is a continuation of the Intro to Drone Pilot Training course, which participants receive more in-depth training on all aspects of the FAA Part 107 knowledge concept rules and regulations needed to safely fly drones. Students are given at least three practice exams that mirror the various parts on FAA Part Aeronautical Knowledge Exam. Students also finish the program on day three with navigating drones through an indoor obstacle training course for handson flight instruction.
