TEE IT UP HOLE IN ONE! Congratulations to Ric Goodman and Bill Wolcott for acing a HoleIn-One this summer!

I don’t know about you all, but I am ready for some cooler temperatures and no more afternoon thunderstorms. As we work our way out of the heat of summer and into the fall, I want to remind everyone that our course aerification will be the Tuesday – Friday the week of Labor Day. Those dates are September 8th through the 11th which is a bit later this year due to Labor Day falling so late. This process is never fun for any golf course but has to be done in order to keep healthy green complexes and course conditions. The healing process usually takes about two to three weeks so I would remind you that as we work our way through this process, it is probably not the best time to entertain guests here at the club but is a great opportunity to maybe plan a trip or two to our other McConnell Golf Properties and see what all they have to offer. Should you have guests already scheduled to come, we will only charge the family guest rate all month while course conditions are not at a premium. While the course is closed for aerification, the Golf Shop hours will be as follows: Tuesday & Wednesday: Closed, Practice Facility Closed Thursday & Friday: Open from 9am to 3pm, Practice Facility Open from 12pm to 6pm Hopefully by the time you are reading this, we are inching our way back to some normalcy amidst this COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few things to remember with regards to your golf experience here at the club. Proper dress code for both the course & practice facility is required Check in prior to your round with the Golf Shop, especially if you have guests Continue to repair your ball marks & replace your divots While we prefer a 4 hour & 15 minute pace of play, if you can go faster, do so Please observe any & all cart restrictions which are posted daily on the tee sheet & pinsheet Personal coolers are prohibited The course & practice facility is CLOSED on Mondays, walking the course is prohibited. Back in July, we hosted the Carolinas Girls Junior Championship. The event was won by Joon Jang of Hilton Head Island, SC. She shot a 3 day total of eleven under par. Both Jang and Alexia Siehl shot our ladies competitive course record of 66 (from 6000 yards). We would also like to recognize our 2020 Ladies Club Champion Janna Moran and our Net Club Champion Doris Pace on their fine play during the Ladies Club Championship in August. We also contested our Couples Club Championship on August 9th and would like to recognize Wayne & Ingrid DiCastri as our Net Champions and Garrett & Darragh Greene as our Gross Champions. Our men’s club championships will be contested later in August and early September and we will recognize them in our next newsletter.

TURF TALK

Greetings from the maintenance staff! As summer is winding down, we are eagerly looking forward to some cooler temperatures ahead. We have several projects planned in the coming months that are going to enhance your playing experience. We will be performing our fall aerification which will include greens, tees, approaches, fairways, and rough. We will continue sodding bare areas around the course, seeding thin spots, and will be repairing more green surrounds. We also have a list of areas that are in need of more drainage, and hope to begin work on these areas as well. I also wanted to take a moment to discuss ball marks and divots. With the increased rounds of golf over the summer months, there has also been an increase in the number of ball marks and divots around the course. There is signage around the course that demonstrates the proper way to repair ball marks and divots. A ball mark or divot that has not been properly fixed, can take weeks to heal; whereas a ball mark or divot that is repaired properly is able to completely heal in a fraction of that time. The staff and I fix ball marks on a regular basis, and make sure sand containers are readily available as part of the daily course set up, to help aid in the recovery process. If left unattended, ball marks and divots will result in unsatisfactory playing conditions. Our goal is to maintain the golf course in such a way that each time you play, it is more enjoyable than the last. Once again, it has been my pleasure engaging with the membership. We are excited for the improvements ahead and look forward to a busy and rewarding fall season. And last but not least, I would like to thank the many members that have volunteered their time to lend a helping hand filling divots on tees, fairways, and approaches this season. It is always very gratifying to see the many groups coming together as a team to show their pride in the golf course.

COURTSIDE NEWS Summer is winding down somewhat which means that the summer camps are over but with school being done virtually, we still should see lots of tennis activity at the courts with PE tennis as well as the after school programs. Online reservations are highly recommended to make sure everyone can spread out safely and enjoy the courts. CCA was the site of a high level USTA jr tournament at the beginning of August that saw some of the top players come to AVL from all over the south to compete. We hosted the boys 14’s and 16 and under divisions. Some of our own jr’s competed in the event and several had some great success. Andre Fogarasi’s grandson, Benjamin managed to win the consolation division in the boys 10 and unders. Benjamin is only 8 years old so this was a great tournament for him after a great summer of training. New member, Hunter Nussbaum had a great event as well and tied for 3rd place in the 16’s division. Xander Barber was in the finals of the 16’s but it was unfortunately rained out. Congrats to them all. CCA will be hosting a USTA jr event at the end of Aug, results will be in the next newsletter but I expect some great play from a lot of them after all the hard work they have put in this summer.

WOMEN This summer, we had a great group of new players come out to learn to play tennis and hope to keep the excitement going this fall. If you are a new player and have interest in this, please contact Bill or Tito to find out which days we have group lessons for them.

MEN We have been battling rainy Thursday evenings all summer but we are continuing Men’s Night Doubles play on Thursday evenings. Tennis starts at 6:30, just arrive by 6:30 and Bill will set the groups up at that time.

JUNIORS With public schools going back virtually; we have some different jr. clinic options this year. We are offering classes at 1:00 and 2:00 in conjunction with the CCA Study Hall program. Also, we will have our after school program in place for others that have in person schooling. Please contact Bill for more info on this.

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS

Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.

Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).

It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed!
