CLUB UPDATE AND NEW MEMBERSHIP A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Happy 2021 ONSC!

Joe and Christy Modzelewski; Children Billie (22), Penny (20), Tripp (19) & dogs Oakley (7) and Willow (1) After emptying their nest in 2020, the Modzelewskis decided on a new adventure. After raising their family on the banks of Lake Murray in Lexington, SC, Joe left his job of 23 years as Medical Director of Pathology at Providence Heart Hospital in Columbia, SC to finish his career in the Salisbury VA Healthcare System as the Service Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Salisbury, Charlotte & Kernersville. Christy has a background in Therapeutic Recreation with an emphasis on Adaptive Aquatics. She’s enjoyed volunteering with various service organizations and conservation efforts in the schools and community, including mentoring, weekend backpack programs, and backyard habitat programs. They are thrilled to have landed at ONSC at Uwharrie Point since they enjoy the lake life and the natural settings offered in this area.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season with family and friends and that you all are as excited as I am for 2021. Some of our annual traditions might have looked very different compared to years past, and some canceled but one thing remained constant, your continued support of Old North State Club. The enthusiasm and turnout we saw this year from our membership was fantastic, and for that, I am extremely thankful. I would also like to thank all of the staff here at ONSC for their dedication and time away from their families this past year; we wouldn't have had such a great year without all of their hard work! We hope we were able to provide you and your family with some great memories during a year where we all found out just how important those moments can be. While 2021 may be uncertain, we have many things to look forward to; coming up with new, fun, and safe activities, expanding and improving our annual events, and ensuring that you receive the best possible experience each time you, your families, and guests visit Old North State Club. So on behalf of everyone working at ONSC, happy New Year and may this year only bring joy and excitement to you and your families. Cheers! Sincerely, Brian Pabst

David & Pam Holton David and Pam moved here in September from Western NC to be closer to their two children and five grandchildren, who live in Winston-Salem. They enjoy boating, spending time with friends and family, and actively contributing to the community.“We look forward to meeting and making new friends in this wonderful community and club”. David is retired from Wachovia Bank and Pam, a career stay-athome mom and homemaker is still employed full time!

OLD NORTH STATE OF MIND

David and Shelly Fisher; Catey (24), Brooke (25) and Mason (26) Residing in Charlotte, David and Shelly are spending as much time as possible at the lake during these times of remote work. David is a Financial Services Consultant and Shelly is a Managing Director at Moody’s Corporation. They have 2 Bernadoodles who also love the lake. They also look forward to meeting new people and participating in clubhouse events and especially wine tastings as David is a Level 1 Sommelier and loves learning about new wines.

@shelleyvideogso I am so excited to release Ashley and Preston's wedding video next month! The bride and groom looked amazing, the venue was stunning, the photographer was incredible to work with, and the woman painting the scene of the ceremony as it happened was one of the best and most unique details I've ever seen at a wedding! Check back soon to watch the video. Hopefully it will have been worth the wait.

OLD NORTH STATE OF MIND THE LINK

Several years ago, at one of our annual corporate meetings, an idea was brought to the table that we needed a Lagniappe of our own that would show our appreciation to members and their guests for dining with us. This idea quickly grew to a collaboration of our executive chefs, their staff members and other club staff submitting cookie recipes to be used in our monthly rotation. These cookies would be a bite size sweet treat for everyone who had lunch at one of our properties in the dining room. As McConnell Golf has grown we have been able to feature a club each month, in addition to recipes from our CEO John McConnell and COO Christian Anastasiadis, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus. Beyond baking and serving these delicious treats in our clubs each month, we also share the recipe in our newsletter and online blog that includes a special story or meaning behind them. Our culinary teams have embraced this idea and continue to showcase their talents with these delectable sweet treats, from our kitchens to yours.

TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

A NOTE FROM YOUR COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

My Fellow Golfers,

Is it really necessary for the greens to be frost-free before play starts?

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. I want to thank the Membership for all the support and trust given to us during the pandemic. Rounds were up more than 30% and we appreciate you bringing your friends and family here to Old North State to experience what I believe to be one of the best golf experiences in North Carolina. I also want to make sure I thank my Staff for all of the hard work they have put in, as we have definitely done more with less this year! Chris Chapman and his staff have done an amazing job keeping our greens pure! The common consensus is our greens rolled better this year than in the past 20 years!

Frost is essentially frozen dew. The ice crystals that are visible on the outside of the plant can also form on the inside of the grass blades. The grass, normally resilient to footsteps then becomes brittle and fragile. Under the pressure of traffic, the ice crystals puncture living plant tissues and rupture the plant cells. Any damage caused will not be visible right away, but it will show up in the footstep tracks in the following days as the plant is unable to repair itself and begins to die. Frost damage can occur on any turfgrass mowed at any height but it is amplified when the plant is mowed low, as on a putting green.

The Golf Staff at ONSC are looking forward to another great year! Justin Mathers, PGA

Keep in mind, a foursome typically takes several hundred footsteps on each green. Allowing just a few groups to play when frost is present can be very damaging to the greens and the rest of the course. It is not completely understood when frost will cause damage, so the decision to keep traffic off the golf course must be made conservatively to protect the condition of the course. Chris Chapman, CGCS

Congrats to Tom Smith on his hole-in-one on #14!

MARINA & NEWS FROM THE NET A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER

Well, I do believe winter is here! I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season! With temperatures in the low 20’s at night and more cold on the way, I feel it’s safe to say that boating season is behind us until next spring. With these freezing temperatures please make sure to set up a winterization appointment for your boat and or PWC. Nothing worse than getting ready to hop on your boat in the spring, just to find out you have a busted engine. That can cost thousands of dollars and leave you high and dry for months. So if you have not called yet please do so immediately! Now is the perfect time to fix some issues that may have plagued your boat during the summer. Even if we cannot do the repair ourselves, feel free to call and I will help find someone who can!

A NOTE FROM YOUR TENNIS PRO Winter is here and with it brings some chilly nights where temperatures will drop below freezing. Just like frost delays for the golf course, the freezing temps also affect our tennis courts and may delay them from being ready for play. When temperatures drop below 32 degrees it causes the top layer of clay to freeze. With less sunshine this time of year it takes them longer to thaw out. We must wait until the courts are completely thawed prior to grooming them before play. Trying to groom them before they are completely thawed can cause permanent damage to the courts. Playing on them while they are still wet can be dangerous, both to the individual and the courts. If there is a freeze overnight, please be patient and wait until the courts are dry and ready for play. Kent Whitener

There is still some great fishing to be had during the winter. Feel free to drop a line in at our courtesy dock or from the shore if you want to scratch that fishing itch! Please call us if you have any questions at 336461-4456. I hope you have a swell day! Dockmaster Dustin Hinson

COOKIES OF THE MONTH JANUARY: COCOA-MOLASSES DROP COOKIES By Bruce McIntosh, Chef at the Country Club of Asheville

From 1985-2015, H. Robert Sharbaugh was a member of the Country Club of Asheville and had served time as a member of the board for a number of years. He was very well-known and admired by club members and staff alike. He meant a great deal to me, especially during my earlier years at the club. One memory of him that stands out to me, in particular, was the year that, this self-proclaimed chocoholic, gifted me a very old, yet pristine Hershey’s cookbook from 1934 that had been revised and reprinted in 1971. I think of him fondly every time I open the binding to see his name on the inside cover. Thank you for your service to our country and the many laughs throughout the years. This one is for you Mr. Sharbaugh! Yield: Approximately 2-3 Dozen Cookies Ingredients: 1/3 Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Molasses 1 Egg 1 cup All-Purpose Flour, sifted 1 TSP Baking Powder 3 TBSP Hershey’s Cocoa Powder or whatever you have on hand 1/2 Cup Chopped Nuts Directions: Cream butter and sugar; add molasses and the egg. Sift together all dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients. Fold in the nuts and scoop mixture into 1-inch rounds onto a greased and lined sheet pan. Bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes.

FEBRUARY: CHOCOLATE DIPPED COCONUT MACAROON COOKIES By John Crawford, Chef at Providence Country Club

This has been one of my favorite cookie recipes for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my grandmother would make these for us when we would come and visit. While all of the others would devour the chocolate chip cookies, I had these all to myself. If you like coconut and chocolate, this recipe is for you! With the toasted outside, creamy inside, and smooth chocolate to tie it all together, it cannot get much better. Ingredients: 16oz. Sweetened Flaked Coconut 1 cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract Pinch of Salt 6oz. Semisweet Chocolate Chips 2 Large Egg Whites Directions: Start by mixing the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt thoroughly in a mixing bowl. Next, separate the egg whites from the yolk and beat the egg whites until they form a stiff peak. Gently fold the egg whites into the coconut mixture. Using a small scoop, scoop the mixture onto a parchment-lined sheet pan spacing each about two inches apart. Place the macaroons in a 325°F preheated oven for 25 minutes, rotating as needed to prevent burning. While macaroons are baking in the oven, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, stirring frequently. When cookies have cooled completely, dip the bottoms in the melted chocolate and place them on a clean sheet of parchment paper. Enjoy!
