MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members, I am excited to send you this letter as I am well underway in my current role as your new General Manager at Providence Country Club. My transition over the past month could not have been any smoother. I have had the pleasure of meeting several members (and their families) in addition to the talented team of directors and dedicated employees at PCC that supports them. I can’t thank all of you enough for providing such a welcoming atmosphere. I hope all of you were able to enjoy some time with family and loved ones over this past holiday season. I know the Club provided that opportunity for quite a few of you as we enjoyed a busy season with family events such as: Thanksgiving and Santa’s Brunches, Holiday Sweater Party, Gingerbread Decorating Party and New Year’s Eve Dinner. Now it’s time to start anew in ‘22! After meeting with the various department heads across the property, I can tell you that there is a shared sense of excitement about what the future holds at PCC. The past two years have been challenging at best, but we continue to see more and more light at the end of the tunnel. From Golf to Tennis, the Clubhouse to the Pool, our team is committed to going above and beyond for the membership. With that being said, my top priority for 2022 (and beyond) is to “enhance the member experience.” While my focus will initially begin within the Clubhouse, my attention will certainly not end there. These enhancements will include, but are not limited to: asset improvements, new standards, consistency, service training, types and number of events, menu variety and upgraded equipment. I have spent my time over the past month evaluating the property and operation from both a bird’s eye view and a more intricate perspective. I’ve spoken to staff across the property, but would like to hear from you as well. Please don’t hesitate to reach out as I always have an “open door” policy and would value your feedback. As I stated in my introductory communication, it is truly an honor having been selected by the leadership team at McConnell Golf and be part of their vision in, ‘Building Clubs of the Future.’ I see an abundance of opportunity at Providence. I am enthusiastic about the future and eager to get started on reaching our full potential together. Take Care, Thomas Sullivan, CCM Providence Country Club General Manager

SHORT GAME FACILITY The short game facility is a great place to practice during the winter months, especially now that we’ve over-seeded the fairway. Grab your wedges and spend at least half of your devoted practice time to your wedge game. As the main range tee can be fairly busy at times, the short game facility remains a peaceful place to practice. Imagination around our green complexes can greatly assist in lowering your scores. Hitting higher lofted chips/pitches, followed by lower flighted shots can greatly improve your scoring from 75 yards and in. I highly suggest hitting shots from the same yardage while working on flighting the ball at different heights. Stop by the Golf Shop and ask us drills to do in order to work on flighting the golf ball while at the short game facility.

GREENS AND GROUNDS
PCC GOLF COURSE UPDATE With 2021 behind us, I’m excited to look forward to what 2022 has in store for us here at Providence. Some big ticket items were crossed off the list over the past two months, and we can now hit the reset button and prepare for the New Year. We were able to apply our big pre-emergence/post-emergence herbicide spray back in November. This set us up for a clean golf course through the fall, winter, and into spring. We were also able to finally tidy up the course and get all the leaves cleaned up. Having these things behind us has allowed us to concentrate on other things to get ready for the 2022 growing season. One of the things we try to do every off-season is bunker work. This process involves getting into every bunker to check sand depths and redistribute the sand properly throughout the bunker, or add sand where needed. We also re-establish any edges that have been covered over with sand, as well as tamp the entire bunker for better firmness after moving the sand around. Winter time also presents a good opportunity to do some tree work that we may not have time to complete during the rush of the growing season. Trees that we are dead, present a hazard, or trees that compromise turf health are things we look for during the growing season so we know what to address during the winter months. You may see some plug work on a few greens during your round. These are problem areas from bound up, unused nutrients, which have formed harmful layers over time. The plug work is physically removing the layers. After helping to correct these small soil nutrient imbalances on greens in 2021, I am excited to implement my own fertility plan for 2022. We will utilize this program, along with a simplistic, no-nonsense approach to maximize plant health through the growing season and year round. See you on the course, MARK SCOTT Golf Course Superintendent

JANUARY COOKIE OF THE MONTH: RASPBERRY PECAN THUMBPRINT COOKIES BY KENRIC HUNT, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT BV This cookie came to mind because of one of my elementary teachers, it was her favorite to give out during Christmastime. I don’t remember details of why it was her favorite, but we knew they were in our goody bags… enjoy a little sweet from a sweet teacher! INGREDIENTS 1 ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1 Cup Sugar 1 Large Egg Yolk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 3 ⅓ AP Cup Flour ¼ TSP Salt 1 Cup Toasted Pecans, finely chopped Raspberry Jam
DIRECTIONS Beat the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer. Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Mix in flour, salt and chopped toasted pecans. Mix until well incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Using a cookie scoop, scoop out mounds of the cookie dough into a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using your thumb or the back of a teaspoon, press into the center of each cookie. Fill a piping bag with raspberry jam and pipe the jam into the center of each cookie. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown in color.

FEBRUARY COOKIE OF THE MONTH: MARBLED VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIES BY SEAN O’NEILL, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT TCC This is a simple cookie recipe that will last for generations. My Nonni used to make these cookies for me when I was younger; at first to be her valentine, then to give to my valentine. Now I make them with my daughter and tell her she is my valentine. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, softened ½ Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Large Egg 1½ TSP Vanilla Extract ¼ TSP Salt ½ TSP Baking Powder 2 Cup AP Flour Red Gel food coloring
DIRECTIONS In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla, followed by salt and baking powder. Scrape the bowl as needed. Gradually mix in flour, increasing speed as needed until dough is fully combined and no streaks remain. Divide dough in half, transferring half to a clean bowl, set aside. Add a small amount of dark pink gel food coloring to the remaining dough. Beat until fully tinted and no streaks remain. Pinch off golf ball sized portions of dough, rolling into balls. Create a pattern of alternate colored balls of dough on your work station. Gently, knead all dough together until swirls of color are visible. Do not over mix. Shape into a disc and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30-60 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick, on a lightly floured surface. Cut out heart shapes. Space two inches apart on a prepared baking sheet. Freeze cookies for 15 minutes. Press together remaining dough and scraps, re-wrap in plastic and keeping chilled until ready to roll and cut again. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes. Allow cookies to rest on the pan for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
