Porters Neck Members, There is a lot going on at Porters Neck and I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on what to anticipate in the month to come.
GOLF The practice facility project is beginning to take shape and progress is moving along as scheduled. We anticipate the driving range portion of the project to begin the 3rd week of May. Once the driving range is closed, we do plan to have a hitting net behind the 1st tee to allow players to warm up prior to teeing off. The overall completion of the project is still projected to be completed by early August. McConnell Golf Continues to Dominate North Carolina Course Rankings in 2021. For the first time in its 17-year history, Raleigh-based McConnell Golf propelled all 10 of its North Carolina courses into the state’s top 100 rankings, including a trio of layouts ranked among the state’s top 20. For more details, please see the Golf section of The Post. We are excited to welcome Jordan Tennent as our new Assistant Golf Professional. He will also lead our Junior Golf program. Jordan Tennent comes to Porters Neck Country Club following his first year with McConnell Golf as an Assistant Professional at the Country Club of Asheville. Jordan attended Coastal Carolina University where he graduated with a Finance degree and became a Class A PGA Professional. While working multiple internships during his time at Coastal Carolina, Jordan noticed a common theme. The essential aspect of a healthy facility is a stable, active, and successful junior program. He takes pride in his work and really enjoys seeing the smile on a member’s face when they make that first solid contact or hole their first putt. In his spare time, Jordan enjoys watching his beloved Carolina Panthers and Tottenham Hotspurs. Jordan is excited to join the Porters Neck team and return to Wilmington, a place where he called home for six years. POST | CLUB NEWS

Employee of the Month Dana Kovich, our assistant golf professional, was recently recognized and awarded the Porters Neck CC “Employee of the Month.” Over the past 6 years, Dana has been a key leader in the evolution of the golf experience at PNCC and ensuring that we continue to exceed members and guests’ expectations. Additionally, she has been instrumental in growing the game of golf through our LGA programs and ladies/ men’s clinics. Please congratulate and thank Dana for her dedication.

General Manager's Message, Cont'd from page 4.
FAMILY POOL OPENING
The family pool is scheduled to reopen May 21st. We will not implement the reservation system this year, but we will continue proper sanitization procedures and ensure recommended spacing between chairs.
NEW POOL BAR
There will be several new enhancements at the pool including our new pool bar! In addition to our regular poolside cocktails, the new pool bar will also feature beers on tap. We are in the final stages of finishing this project and still need to add additional chairs and tv. Poolside service is also in the works for the 2021 summer season. We have ordered special Porters Neck flags that, when raised, will signal an attendant that you would like to place an order.
I would like to recognize Benny Wall, pictured above, who has been instrumental in designing and building the bar. Benny has been a member at PNCC for 8 years and prior to retirement. Benny was a building contractor for over 43 years. So, when we had the bright idea to build a bar, I knew the exact person we needed to consult. I just didn’t expect him to volunteer to build it. So, on behalf of all of the members that will enjoy “Benny’s Bar”, we thank you. It's an exciting time to be a part of Porters Neck! Sincerely,
Jason Seehafer General Manager, Porters Neck Country Club POST | CLUB NEWS

Practice Area Renovations We plan to close the driving range around the third week in May. We will place a net and 2 mats on the Gold tee of hole #1. This is for warm up only before teeing off. Plan on warming up 10 minutes before your tee time then move to the first tee. Please do not show up way before your tee time hoping to warm up. We just do not have enough space to accommodate more than 1 group at a time. Please do not practice on the course at any time. We know having the practice facilities closed is an inconvenience, but we don’t want to have people getting in the way of play and tearing up the course. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

McConnell Golf Continues to Dominate North CarolinaCourseRankings For the first time in its 17-year history, Raleigh-based McConnell Golf propelled all 10 of its North Carolina courses into the state’s top 100 rankings, including a trio of layouts ranked among the state’s top 20. Those three — Old North State Club on the shores of Badin Lake, near New London, Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club and Raleigh Country Club — all remained in North Carolina’s top 20, while the other seven helped McConnell Golf maintain its status in the state’s top 100. A perennial state top 10, Old North State Club was ranked No. 9 in North Carolina, while Sedgefield CC — which annually challenges the world’s best golfers during the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship — moved into the state top 10 at No. 10. Raleigh CC was ranked No. 20 in the state. In 2020, along with the addition of Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington to its portfolio, McConnell Golf unveiled a $5.5 million restoration of Donald Ross’ last design at Raleigh CC, overseen by architect Kyle Franz. Architecture experts predict RCC will jump higher in the state rankings following the modern-day reimagining of the iconic course. POST | GOLF
In December, McConnell Golf expanded its footprint across the southeast with the purchase of The Water’s Edge Country Club in Penhook, Va., on Smith Mountain Lake. McConnell Golf is an owner and operator built upon the concept of “pure golf for the true golfer,” focusing on enhancing both the individual club’s and its company’s overall membership value. The McConnell Golf collection of clubs throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee and now Virginia includes courses designed by legends Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Hale Irwin and Ellis Maples. In the 2021 North Carolina Top 100 rankings, Durham’s Treyburn Country Club was ranked No. 31, followed by the Country Club of Asheville (48), The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro (52), Porters Neck Country Club (75), Charlotte’s Providence Country Club (79), The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh (81) and Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville (100). The 2021 state rankings also included two specialty categories. PAGE 16
Old North State Club was ranked No. 4 among the state’s “Fairest Courses to Play” (“regardless of overall difficulty, courses that best reward good shots and penalize poor ones in a manner that is reasonable”). Meanwhile, Sedgefield ranked No. 10 in the state for “Most Strategic Courses” (“the degree to which the course requires thoughtful planning and precise execution of shots from tee to green”). “Our courses continue to merge history, beauty and opportunity for our avid golfing membership and their guests,” said McConnell Golf President & CEO John McConnell. “With the enhancements made at Raleigh Country Club and new projects planned at other McConnell Golf courses, I am proud of what we have accomplished in the past year and eager to see how the rankings play out in the future.” Raleigh Country Club’s restoration project turned out to be a masterpiece and I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the new layout. The N.C. Golf Panel presented its 26th annual report on the state’s 100 best courses in the April issue of Business North Carolina magazine.

Turf Notes
By: Chris Parham, PNCC Golf Course Superintendent
The golf course is really starting to green up. We had some coolers night that set the Bermuda back some, but we hopefully seen our last 4o degree night. The golf course irrigation project is almost complete! We expect to be finished with by the second week of May. The project included a total of 870 irrigation heads, and over 6.5 miles of control wire buried throughout the course. When the team finishes the golf course, they will start installing the irrigation at the short game area. They are finishing up at the right time because we have only had about 1.5 inches of rainfall for the entire month of April. We went from steady rainfall, during the first three months, to dry and windy conditions. The short game project is moving along nicely. The construction team has started adding the greens mix to all the new greens, as well as starting to shape the bunkers.
May
They will be installing the Cap Con bunker linear next week. The purpose of using Cap Con liners is to prevent the bunkers from washing out and becoming contaminated. If you are interested in learning more about how the Capillary Concrete works, I encourage you to visit capillarybunkers.com. We are still estimating that sprigging the greens will take place the last week of May. The grassing of the short game will start the week before sprigging. The construction team will move to the driving range tee around the same time frame which will be around the third week of May. We have repurposed a lot of the sod around the driving range by using it to repair week turf areas throughout the course. We are going to try and take part of the range tee sod and repair hole 10. Hopefully, we can make this happen. We have started top dressing and verticutting greens. As we get into summer, we will implement the verticutting and topdressing on a regular schedule of what we call Maintenance Monday’s. I hope everyone is do well and getting out and enjoying PNCC. See you out on the course.

May 18th: Match Play: 2 Person Teams. Game will score 1 best net score from each hole for each team. Holes are worth 1 point a piece for a win and ½ point for a tie. Your opponent is the other half of your foursome.
