CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR I cannot think of a better opening than a heartfelt congratulations to our very own Eric Ferguson on his recent, well-deserved promotion to the Director of Golf at Sedgefield Country Club. From leading a seamless Member-Guest early in the interim period to effectively running day-today operations and everything in between, he made a noticeable positive impact. Another win for the golf operation was Eric's immediate promotion of Josh Webb to Head Professional. I am excited for the golf programming enhancements these two gentlemen and the entire golf operations team have in store for our members in the 2022 golf season and beyond. And a warm congratulations also to Josh Webb for being named the CPGA Assistant of the Year. The holiday season is now in the rearview mirror, but your good deeds will be long-lasting with over $100,000 of charitable giving in 2021 by Sedgefield members, community, and staff. The right side of this page as well as the following one includes pictures and comments for three of our most significant charitable programs. A huge thanks goes to everyone who contributed their time, money, and efforts to pay it forward in the Triad.

GIVING BACK TO THE HEALTH CARE HEROES AT CONE HEALTH CANCER CENTER

Thanks to the great team pictured above: Maya Panayotova, Joaquin Campos, Jay Wess, Gaby Palacio, Sedgefield members Ron and Kari Gaffé, Chef Ron Gordils, Will Powers, and Travis Huddleston

We reference our Sedgefield Family and Cardinal Family often and I'd like to share the sincerity of those references for me personally. Towards the end of 2021, I was honored to be named the Carolinas CMAA Club Manager of the Year. As much as receiving this award meant to me, I was more honored to receive so many phone calls, emails, text messages, and cards from our members. Your heartfelt words of congratulations more than solidified that we are indeed like family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your congratulations and for your support.

The new year is underway and your staff is ready to embrace all the new challenges and new opportunities that lie ahead. Please join me in thanking them for their optimism and persistence every day. I am so proud and thankful for my work family. Cheers, Beverly Marler

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY MR. BOB KENNERLY

The tradition continues as Sedgefield Members and community came together once again to raise funds to feed Thanksgiving lunch to the staff at Cone Health Cancer Center. The Food and Beverage team at Sedgefield prepared and delivered 220 Thanksgiving meals on Thursday, November 18 to a very grateful group of folks. Mr. Bob Kennerly turned 90 years young on December 6 and celebrated the milestone at a special dinner with friends. Mr. Kennerly is a long-time member of The Cardinal whose contributions over the years are appreciated and abundant. Happy Birthday Mr. Kennerly!!

SEDGEFIELD TIMES

Special thanks to Sedgefield members Ron and Kari Gaffé for spearheading this effort and to the Sedgefield Staff for their collaboration! This tradition has become a very rewarding kick-off to the holiday season.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN SEDGEFIELD COMMUNITY RAISES $100,000 FOR CHARITY DURING THE 2021 HOLIDAY SEASON!! THANK YOU SEDGEFIELD MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY, SEDGEFIELD ANGEL TREE HELPERS, AND SEDGEFIELD WOMAN'S CLUB FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND HARD WORK! SEDGEFIELD ANGEL TREE HELPERS SALVATION ARMY FUNDRAISER

SEDGEFIELD WOMAN'S CLUB CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER

Benefitting the Salvation Army, the Sedgefield Angel Tree Helpers was formed in 2016 so that every child with a name tag on the Angel Tree at Sedgefield would be able to have Christmas. That first year they raised $11,000 serving nearly 70 children. Each year, the fundraising culminates at a golf tournament - The Angel Tree Open - giving supporters a chance to come together and celebrate the season and their efforts. The initiative has grown immensely each year since inception and in 2021, funds raised totaled over $68,000, bringing the grand total since 2016 to $235,000!

Annually the Sedgefield Woman's Club hosts a Christmas Fundraising luncheon with a silent and live auction - their largest fundraising effort of the year. Supported by many local businesses and individuals alike, the 2021 event raised over $31,000, benefitting local schools and children's charities.

Pictured above are Elizabeth Swaim, Michelle Bruggeworth, Sheryl Hamilton, and Dot Herron after a long day bagging and tagging gifts purchased with the generous donations of Sedgefield members. As of this writing, this year's purchases included 500 coats for kids, 204 Fire Tablets, 81 Bicycles and Tricycles, 48 Baby Alive Dolls, 36 Pound Puppies, 24 Fisher Price Toys, 27 LeapFrog Educational Toys, 24 Skateboards and Scooters, 24 Pretend Play Food Sets, 16 Minnie Mouse Kitchens, 12 VTech Toys, 12 Remote Control Cars, 12 Barbie Campers, 10 Science Kits, 6 Baby Yodas, and 5 Doll Houses.

CARDINAL buzz & MEMBERSHIP A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Twenty-four months ago I sat down to pen my article for the January 2020 newsletter. In the article, I discussed closing out one decade and entering a new one full of promise and hope, along with the 100th anniversary of Sedgefield Country Club coming up in 2026. I also referenced The Roarin’ 20s as something we should aspire to in relation to club and membership growth. If I had a crystal ball back then, I don't think anyone would have believed everything that was about to happen over the next two years. I do not need to recap it all for you here, but I think you get where I am going – to say the past two years have been interesting would be an understatement. A roller coaster of emotions for all of us as we navigated the health of ourselves and our loved ones along with working from home, virtual school, and simply not knowing what the “new normal” would be. While we seem to have some answers, there are still many unanswered questions out there. What is not in question is the impact the events of the last two years have had on all aspects of the game of golf. I will not get into statistics with you, but it is safe to say that interest in golf has skyrocketed, with most golf courses across the country, and the world for that matter, being a safe haven for social distancing on more than 200+ acres of fresh air. Add in general boredom from those not accustomed to working from home and the families that travel every weekend for sports being stuck at home with nothing to do, all of those factors combined with a booming economy made club membership a “no-brainer” for many, with Sedgefield undoubtedly seeing our fair share of new families joining our club. Two constants that have not changed in my almost ten years with Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf are one, former members returning to the club and two, new members joining being referred in by current members. In my almost twenty years in this industry, I have always maintained that healthy clubs grow from within, and Sedgefield is no different. Looking back on the past year I cannot begin to thank you all enough for your assistance with referrals. There was a lot of work, long hours, and even losing my voice some days from talking to so many people about the club – but the majority of those are now members, with the majority of them joining through the referral of other members. I am looking forward to 2022, and who knows what is in store!?! All I do know is that I am excited for another year at Sedgefield and with McConnell Golf and I am anticipating even greater growth at the club as we continue to solidify Sedgefield as the premier private club in the area and membership within McConnell Golf as the “Greatest Private Club Value From The Mountains To The Coast!”

SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

I hope this message finds everyone doing well as we head into a new year. Overall 2021 was a successful year for the agronomy team. The weather this year was both good for growing turf and also allowed for a lot of great golfing weather days. We were cart path only for 28 days this year and only had to cover the greens 4 different times in January and February. The Wyndham Championship was a big success for us this year as we finally had a year that we were able to control the conditions the entire week except for Sunday due to overnight rain on Saturday. Typically we get several rain events that week and makes the course play not as we prepared it to play. It was great to see it play firm and fast the entire week and the scores this year were a reflection of that. Our biggest struggle for 2021 was labor. We could never get to full staff at any point for 2021 but our normal full-time staff stepped up and really did an amazing job picking up the slack along with us getting more creative with ways to increase productivity without losing quality.

What a nice fall and start to winter we had to enjoy the game of golf. The abnormally dry weather has allowed the course to play fast and firm, which I know most of us enjoy. This nice weather has also allowed the agronomy team to make lots of headway on our bunker project. As I am writing this, we have redone 22 greenside bunkers, and have 16 more greenside bunkers to do to complete this project. I am very pleased with our pace and how the bunkers are turning out. I am very hopeful that we will get approved to continue this work next year and move on to the fairway bunkers. This is very hard work as we are handdigging out all the bunkers, then spreading out the new sand by hand. So, “thank you” to those of you that have complimented the work that the team is doing. I have passed along your compliments to them.

Please keep in mind that the next 3 months are when we typically have some weather patterns move in that produce cold enough temperatures that warrant us to put out the protective covers on the greens to help prevent any winter damage. We are constantly monitoring these longrange forecasts and we will try to give ample notice on any course closures we may experience. Over the next several months we will be working on several small projects that consist of checking all the sand depths in the bunkers and making sure there is adequate sand. We will also be putting out fresh pine straw in all the beds, raising the sprinkler heads level with the turf around the greens on the front 9 (back 9 was completed last year), and we have a couple of small drainage projects that we plan to get completed before things start getting busy in May. Let’s all hope for a mild winter and I hope to see you all out on the course! Chad Cromer

The bunker project is not our only goal for this winter. We also have more tree work to do. As you know, we have already removed more dead trees on 4 and there are many more that we will be removed very soon. Also, now that the leaves are pretty much all on the ground, we will start going to some areas where the leaves are piled up along the edges and vacuuming the leaves up and out of these areas. Now that we are in the middle of winter and the Bermuda grass is fully dormant and not growing, there are a few things that you can do to help maintain the course this winter. Please obey the cart rule daily and follow all traffic control signs and stakes on the golf course. All carts should be on the cart path around all tees and greens. This is one of the most important things that you can do to help minimize damage and prevent winter kill. Also, please be patient with us and the pro shop staff on any delays to your starting time. Frost delays are a part of winter golf in North Carolina and are only done to protect the greens from any damage. Hopefully we will continue to have a warm and dry winter so we are all able to enjoy being outside playing the game that we love. See you on the course!

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

BUNKER ETIQUETTE

It is hard to believe that 2021 has come and gone. We hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the holidays and spend that much-needed time with family and friends. We are so excited for 2022 and have some fun and exciting events planned for you this year.

How many times have you approached a bunker and found the sand not raked or your ball in a footprint? Or how about a bunker rake found at the end of a long line of tracks up the face of the bunker only to have the tracks continue onto the putting green leaving deposits of sand in the form of footprints on the putting green. Many people may have skipped over the first section of the Rule Book. It is the Etiquette section and it is well worth a read.

January wouldn’t be January if we didn’t talk about those New Year’s Resolutions. Let us help you set up a structured plan to accomplish these goals. The Professional Staff is dedicated to helping improve all areas of your game and to help you have the best year of golf you have ever had. The first thing we ask you to do is set up an appointment with a member of the Professional Staff and do an evaluation of your game. We also recommend that you do the same thing with our Fitness Director Sherri Talent and let her perform a golf-specific assessment on your body to understand the golf/fitness relationship. From there she and the Professional Staff at the fitness center will work closely together to set up specific programs designed to help improve the overall performance of your game. We also have a few new player development programs that we will implement this year. Beginning in March, we will be offering a ladies' instructional program designed for all skill levels. I also will be offering an instructional program “Evenings with Eric” that will be dedicated to helping improve your short game. Please be on the lookout for more information on these programs soon. In closing, thank you for your continued support of Sedgefield and the Professional Golf Staff. Our goal is to see you playing more golf, socializing with friends, and utilizing the club more in 2022. Remember, my office door is always open anytime you need to talk!

See you on the course! Eric Ferguson

2021 CAROLINAS PGA ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR - JOSH WEBB

One of the sentences in the introduction states “The overriding principle is that consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times.” I believe that consideration should also be extended to the course itself. Take a look at the section on “Care of the Course” in the Etiquette section as well. When I see a bunker not raked, I know that it is either someone who has not been taught the etiquette of the game or someone who does not care about others on the course or the course itself. Here are a few simple etiquette points to remember about playing from a bunker and what you need to do afterward. Generally, you should always enter a bunker from the “low side” of the bunker. That is the side furthest from the putting green. This will help the Superintendent to maintain the bunker faces. Locate a bunker rake before you go into a bunker and go ahead and bring it into the bunker with you. There is no penalty if you lay the rake down in the bunker provided you do nothing to test the condition of the bunker. After playing from the bunker, go ahead and use the bunker rake to smooth the sand in the bunker. Try to make it look like no one has disturbed the sand since the maintenance staff groomed the bunkers that morning. Exit the bunker on the “low side” of the bunker; the same way you came into it. After exiting the bunker, go ahead and remove the excess sand from your shoes by lightly tapping the sides of your shoes with a club or gently stomping them on the ground. This will prevent sand from being “tracked” onto the putting green. Place the bunker rake where the course instructs you to; sometime in the bunker and some time out. Just make sure it is on the low side of the bunker or the side away from the putting green.

Please join us in congratulating Josh Webb on being named the 2021 Carolinas PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year. Out of the twenty finalist, Josh was selected for this prestigious award. The Assistant Golf Professional of the Year is awarded to an individual who showcases overall excellence as an Assistant Professional. They exude a quality level of service, promotion of the game, image, and overall performance at his/her facility. Josh will be recognized along with the other 2021 Award Winners in February at the Carolinas PGA Awards Dinner.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL A Year to Remember! It is hard to believe we are in the year 2022 right now. It feels like we just started 2021. I guess it’s true, time flies when you are having fun. After 7 seasons at the Cardinal, I truly feel this past one was the most exciting. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the fun we had during the year. We started the season with our season-opening event back on April 3. Over 90 players joined us as we opened the Cardinal season. Blaine Biggs and his son (to the left) reminded us as to why the club experience is so special.

Masters time of year always brings out that golfer in all of us. This year was no different from the Cardinal Par 3 Tournament. Members young and old, father and son, and husband and wife enjoyed a night of golf on the links, Par 3 style.

Not sure anyone had fun during the Men’s Member-Member Tournament in May, but by the looks of these pictures I think a few people did! We can’t wait to see what happens in 2022.

The first-night golf event featuring Glow Vibe Golf was a hit! Even though those pesky golf balls didn’t stay lit up as long as advertised, everyone still stayed awake long enough to enjoy the lights.

When summer comes, that means it's time to find out who our best players are. Time for the Club Championship. Two of great weather and a perfect golf course equals great golf which equates to great champions. Our first Ladies Invitational brought a newfound energy to an already great event. With members pairing up with members and guest foursomes coming from around the state, the Cardinal Ladies Invitational is definitely moving on up the list for must-play events. Be sure to come out next year to join the fun.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL For the Men’s Invitational, we decided to try something a bit different. Each team had to play 5 9-hole matches against the other 5 teams within their flight. A little different for some, very familiar for most, and after all said and done, fun for all. Great seeing new members joining in on the competitive spirit and having a bit of unexpected fun!

I’d also like to quickly give a huge shootout to Ross Jernigan and his team for providing us with an unbelievable golf course. He and his team have allowed us to do so much this year. I’ve heard more comments this year about the condition of the course and how much better the Cardinal is now than in the past. We can’t thank him enough for his leadership and dedication to give you the golf course you and the facility deserve. Lastly, thanks to Ross, I won’t have to answer the question, “the course is great, if only they (whomever they are) could put more sand in the bunkers.” Thank you, Ross. Thank you to all those who supported the Cardinal this year, to everyone who came out to the club each day, to all of our new family members who joined this year, and for allowing myself and our team to be a part of your lives during the past year. We look forward to 2022 and what it has in store. I’m sure a few new memories are right around the corner. See you around the club real soon. Chris Terry

SAVE THE DATES 2022

The final event of the season, The Santa Scramble, saw the true spirit of the holidays and why we love our club. One hundred players joined us on a glorious day in December to play a little golf and some much need fellowship as we headed into the holiday season. We did have two teams win the tournament, however, the true winners were the boys and girls helped by the donation made by you, our members to help provide bright Christmas for some special children.

As we remember the fun times we had last year, it’s time to look to the future and book your calendar as we have another great list of events planned for 2022. Get ready for another year of some great golf, laughs, and some regular old fun around the club. Some of the events we have planned are below:

FITNESS NEWS A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS

HAPPY NEW YEAR! When it comes to achieving your fitness goals, your mindset is key to your success. As the famous saying goes, “whether you think you can, or think you can’t—you’re right.” Physical results only follow mental training, so when you get your mindset locked down, you’re well on your way to success. Here are a couple of ways to help you stay on track and meet your fitness goals. Goal setting is a powerful tool in your fitness journey because it encourages the behavioral changes you know are necessary to reach your target.

HOW YOGA CAN IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME

Golf conditioning yoga is one of the easiest ways to restore, improve, and maintain optimal functional movement patterns and maximize golf performance. Why? Because yoga or yoga asana (yoga for exercise) is ultimately about proper breathing patterns, and high levels of stability, internal strength, muscle endurance, and balance. NEW 6-WEEK YOGA FOR GOLFERS WITH ANNA WOODS The new session begins on Thursdays, beginning January 13 and ending Thursday, February 18. Classes will begin at 10:00am and will be offered at $70 per person. There must be at least 5 attendees to offer the session. To register please email Sherri at fitness@sedgefieldcc.com.

Setting realistic goals is key. So how can you do that? By setting SMART goals: Specific | Set a clear, well-defined goal rather than a general target. Measurable | Set precise, measurable amounts to track your success. Attainable | Be honest with yourself. Can you realistically accomplish your goal? Relevant | Set goals that align with the direction you want to move. Time-bound | Give yourself a concrete deadline for reaching your goal. TRADE YOUR “ALL OR NOTHING” ATTITUDE FOR A MORE FLEXIBLE APPROACH When it comes to working out and improving your health, an “all or nothing” approach is bound to backfire, especially if you’re new to the game. No matter how diligent and consistent you are, something is bound to happen that will knock you off track—whether you stay there or hop back on the train is up to you. When you let go of the “all or nothing” approach and adopt a more flexible mindset around your daily exercise, you learn to substitute when necessary. Life will happen, you will make mistakes, and you won’t always be thrilled with your progress (or yourself). That’s just the honest truth. But when you have a flexible mindset around your workouts, you don’t beat yourself up when you fall off track. Instead, you find ways to keep pushing forward toward your goals.

I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center! Sherri Tallant

How to improve your anticipation: There are three places you can pick up the ball while playing a tennis point. 1. Just before the ball bounces 2. As the ball is crossing the net 3. When the ball leaves your opponents racquet Return of serve: The return of serve is so very important for your game. If your opponent breaks your serve, you must break back or you lose the set. The return of serve is usually coming in at a different angle. This angle is tougher than the normal groundstroke. If you practice the return of serve, your regular groundstroke will improve and will seem easier!!

COOKIES OF THE MONTH JANUARY: RASPBERRY PECAN THUMBPRINT COOKIES

FEBRUARY: MARBLED VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIES

By Kenric Hunt - Brook Valley Country Club

By Sean O'Neill - Treyburn Country Club

This cookie came to mind because of one of my elementary teachers, it was her favorite to give out during Christmastime. I don’t remember details of why it was her favorite, but we knew they were in our goody bags… enjoy a little sweet from a sweet teacher!

This is a simple cookie recipe that will last for generations. My Nonni used to make these cookies for me when I was younger; at first to be her valentine, then to give to my valentine. Now I make them with my daughter and tell her she is my valentine. Enjoy!

Ingredients: 1 ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1 Cup Sugar 1 Large Egg Yolk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 3 ⅓ AP Cup Flour ¼ TSP Salt 1 Cup Toasted Pecans, finely chopped Raspberry Jam

Ingredients: ½ Cup Unsalted Butter softened ½ Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Large Egg 1½ TSP Vanilla Extract ¼ TSP Salt ½ TSP Baking Powder 2 Cup All-Purpose Flour Red Gel food coloring

Directions: Beat the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer. Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Mix in flour, salt, and chopped toasted pecans. Mix until well incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Using a cookie scoop, scoop out mounds of the cookie dough into a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using your thumb or the back of a teaspoon, press into the center of each cookie. Fill a piping bag with raspberry jam and pipe the jam into the center of each cookie. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown in color.

SEDGEFIELD TIMES

Directions: In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla, followed by salt and baking powder. Scrape the bowl as needed. Gradually mix in flour, increasing speed as needed until dough is fully combined and no streaks remain. Divide dough in half, transfer half to a clean bowl, set aside. Add a small amount of dark pink gel food coloring to the remaining dough. Beat until fully tinted and no streaks remain. Pinch off golf ball-sized portions of dough, rolling into balls. Create a pattern of alternate colored balls of dough on your workstation. Gently, knead all dough together until swirls of color are visible. Do not over mix. Shape into a disc and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30-60 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick, on a lightly floured surface. Cut out heart shapes. Space two inches apart on a prepared baking sheet. Freeze cookies for 15 minutes. Press together remaining dough and scraps, re-wrap in plastic, and keep chilled until ready to roll and cut again. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes. Allow cookies to rest on the pan for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
