CLUB NEWS It is hard to believe that on August 11th, we crossed the 10 year mark as being part of The McConnell Golf Family of Clubs. We were the 7th club purchased in a Network of Clubs that now extends to 15 Private Clubs in 4 different states. As someone who was here when the transition took place, the club continues to be in great hands. Many thanks to everyone who supported our Folds of Honor Golf Marathon on July 6th. Through your generosity, we were able to raise over $25,000 to support this wonderful cause. As a whole, The McConnell Golf Network of Clubs raised over $298,000. We cannot thank you enough. It was a pretty fun but quick summer as life seemed to be back to normal. I hope everyone has had a chance to experience The Breaker Bar & Grille down at the pool. With the bar in place, we will be hosting several events down there through at least the end of October. Be on the lookout for these upcoming events. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support of the club. Be well and safe! Michael Thomas, Club Manager

331 HOLES were played with 52 BIRDIES and 3 EAGLES being made. More importantly,

$25,454 was raised.

THANK YOU!!!

FALL FERTILIZATION

Why fertilize fairways and roughs when the Bermuda grass is starting to go dormant? This late fertilization is done for a couple of reasons: In September, with shorter days and cooler nights, the top portion of the Bermuda grass plant begins to slow down its growth. The roots, however, are still growing as long as soil temperatures remain above fifty degrees. This is our window for making our fall fertilizer application. We would like to see little if any top growth and the majority of the nutrients taken up and stored in the plant. The nutrients then help build a stronger root system and any unused nutrients are stored over the winter. When ground temperatures fall below fifty degrees, root growth stops. The nutrients that were stored will then be used in the spring. With a stronger healthier root system, the plant has a better chance to survive long periods of cold and freezing temperatures. Then, as spring arrives, and the plant begins to green up, the nutrients in reserve will be used for top growth before soil temperatures are warm enough for root growth. Then, as temperatures get hot, and Bermuda grass is growing, we fertilize again to push growth for the summer. Todd Lawrence, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

AT THE TURN

September Cookie of the Month ~ PB&J Crumble Cookies Sean O'Neill ~ Treyburn Country Club This cookie comes from one of the first kitchens I ever worked in. The Chef there got a new bread maker and we tried out a couple of bread recipes. He found a peanut butter and jelly bread that turned out amazing. We put it on the menu after I made a grilled PB&J on the PB&J bread for lunch one day. The kids loved it and from there we tried just about every PB&J recipe we could. This cookie is one that stood out and was well liked. Ingredients Cooking spray or butter, for coating the pan 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour ½ TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Fine Salt 12 TBSP Unsalted Butter, at room temperature 1 1/3 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 1/3 Cups Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (no sugar added), at room temperature 1 Large Egg 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 1 1/2 Cups Concord Grape Jelly, at room temperature 2/3 Cup Coarsely Chopped Salted, Roasted Peanuts (Optional)

Instructions Arrange a rack in the middle of a convection oven and heat to 325°F on low fan. Line the sides and bottom of a half hotel pan with aluminum foil, then coat the foil with cooking spray or butter; set aside. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until creamed. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and paddle with a rubber spatula. Add the peanut butter and beat on medium-high speed until combined. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until completely combined. Stop the mixer and scrape down again. Return the mixer to low speed and gradually add the flour mixture, stopping when the flour is almost incorporated (do not over mix). Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in the remaining flour by hand with the rubber spatula. Sprinkle 1/2 of the mixture in the baking pan and press into an even layer. Bake until the top is light golden-brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Dollop the jelly over the crust and spread into an even layer as best as you can without disturbing the crust. (Don’t worry if the jelly doesn't spread much, it will melt in the oven.) Sprinkle evenly with the chopped peanuts, if using. Using your hands, crumble the remaining dough into pieces about the size of almonds and sprinkle evenly into the pan. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the top is golden-brown, about 20 minutes more. Remove the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. To serve, grasp the foil in the middle of the pan and lift the bar cookie slab out of the pan and onto a cutting board. Cut into bars.

October Cookie of the Month: Chocolate Pretzel Oatmeal Cookie Patrick Budniewski ~ Holston Hills Country Club

Two years ago around Christmas time I had a cookie very similar to this at a holiday party I attended with my Sister’s family in Nashville. It was so good that I had to try to recreate it. I started with my Grandmothers Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, made a few changes and this is the result. My favorite cookie year round is an Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie and adding the Pretzel and Flaky Sea Salt element just adds another layer of goodness to it. Fresh out of the oven with a glass of milk and you could easily eat the whole plate! Ingredients 1 Cup Salted Butter 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs, Whole 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract 1 ¾ Cup and 2 TBSP All Purpose Flour 1TSP Baking Soda 1/2 TSP Cinnamon 1/2 TSP Kosher Salt 1 ½ Cup Old Fashioned Oats 2 ½ Cups Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 Cup Mini Pretzels, crushed ¼ Cup Flaky Sea Salt (for sprinkling) Instructions Cream together butter and sugars until combined. Continue mixing, adding one egg at a time until combined. Add vanilla and continue mixing until creamy. In a separate bowl add flour, cinnamon, baking soda and kosher salt. Slowly add flour mixture to egg sugar mixture while mixing on low speed. Add 1/4 of the mixture at a time, scraping down sides making sure to fully incorporate flour mixture. After flour mixture is all combined, add oats and chocolate chips folding them in by hand. Roll dough into 2 Tablespoon size balls. Gently push a few crushed pretzels into each ball and flatten with palm of hand to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake in oven at 350°F for 9 to 11 minutes. While cookies are cooling sprinkle with flaky salt sea salt.

TENNIS TIME Summer is coming to a close and I think most of us are excited for some fall weather. September and October at the tennis courts are traditionally some of the busiest months of the year. This season will not be any different with Wakefield fielding twenty USTA combo teams and four USTA junior teams. Along with the league play the courts will also be filled with socials, tournaments, and clinics for everyone in the family to enjoy. New this year will be our "Beat the Pros" party at the courts on Friday evening September 24th. This fun filled night of tennis will give the members a chance to take on the tennis staff. It doesn't exactly sound fair when you first think about it, but the members will be given some coins that they can use to level the playing field. When a coin is placed down by a member the pros will have to pick a card out of a box. Members will be tasked at filling out these cards with some kind of disadvantage on it. Items listed could be something simple like, "play the next point with a wooden racquet" or "do a 360 spin after each shot" or "play the next point holding both hands", whatever it is it will be funny to watch. We will be accepting ideas to place in the box all the way up until the week of play. This alone is

going to be a ton of fun, but to end the night the PROS will play an exhibition in front of everyone and we all know the crowd wants to see Caitlin whoop up on the boys! As always our professional staff is here to help you in any way possible. If you are looking to get into tennis for the first time or dust of the racquets in the garage, we would love to see you out on the courts. Listed below is our fall clinic schedule for juniors and adults if you have any questions on how to get involved please come see us at the tennis shop!

TEE IT UP The fall season is upon us, and we can all look forward to cooler weather and faster greens at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation. The golf schedule for the upcoming months is full of golf tournaments and programs. The golf course is in excellent shape to make sure that you enjoy the club. The golf staff completed our Folds of Honor Golf Marathon on July 6th. We want to thank our membership for their support and generosity. The marathon was a huge success, and we were able to raise $25,453.00. The donated funds will provide five scholarships to the family members of our soldiers who have passed away or have been wounded while serving our great country. As a whole, McConnell Golf raised $298,232.00 for Folds of Honor which will provide 59 scholarships! In the next two months, we are looking forward to the end of our tournament schedule with three of our larger tournaments, the Bob Bidwell Senior MemberGuest, Member-Member Tournament and the Club Championships. We expect full fields for these events, so make sure you sign up on the Wakefield calendar. This fall, we will also continue our successful Operation 36 programs for the ladies and juniors of the club. The golf staff is looking forward to a great fall season. As always, if I can assist you in anyway, please do not hesitate to reach out as my door is always open. FROM THE LESSON TEE: Set Yourself Up for Success I know most of you are excited to read about how we can hit it 10 yards farther and shoot lower scores, but don't forget to focus on fundamentals. If there were a perfect swing in golf, we would all have it, and golf instructors would share the same teaching philosophy. The fact of the matter is that we have different body types, strengths, and weaknesses. I believe that there are fundamentals that have to be there, and the majority of them are done before the club begins to move. Make sure to double-check these checkpoints before you start your swing. Proper Stance The golf swing works from the ground up. Without a solid base we can limit ourselves. We need to make sure that our feet are should-width apart and the ball position is correct. Always start with the ball position in the middle with our PW through 8 iron. As the club gets longer, we begin slowly inching the ball to our front foot. The driver should be lined up just inside your front heel with a wider stance. Tee it high and let it fly! Good Posture Always start each shot by placing the clubhead behind the ball with your feet together. As you take your steps shoulder-width apart, stand nice and tall. With your legs locked focus on bending your chest down as your waist goes out. (Picture bending over a ball). At this point, you should feel a slight pull in your hamstrings and then softly unlock your knees so that the weight is on the balls of your feet. So many golfers have too much knee bend, which causes our spine angle to become too upright, and the weight kicks to the heels. Alignment One of the biggest mistakes so many players make is not being square to their target. If you are a range rat, I would encourage you to use alignment sticks at all times. So many swing flaws are created by pool alignment. Focus on a spot about a foot in front of your ball in line with your target. It is much easier to aim something a foot away versus 300 yards away. Once your clubface is square to your target, we must make sure that our feet are parallel to our target line. I find that most amateaur golfers tend to aim their feet and shoulders at their target. If this is you, chances are you are aimed too far right. when you are standing over the ball, imagine a line from your ball to your target. Get out of the habit of looking down your shoulder line.

I look forward to seeing you all putting these tips to work on the range. Don't forget your alignment sticks! Erica Britt, Teaching Professional

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs. Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.” Photo Courtesy: John Gillooly/Wyndham Championship

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club. Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on. “It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan. It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff. Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff. “My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.” Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley. McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66. In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.
