OurBenallaStoryMigrant Camp
Benalla Migrant Camp was commonly referred to as the ‘Balt Camp’. Before it was largely demolished in the 1990s, the camp infrastructure was extensive including four school buildings, a hospital, kindergarten and crèche, chapel, shop, a cinema hall and youth recreation centre as well as several administration and staff buildings. At full
capacity the camp was able to house and feed 500 individuals.
After World War II the former RAAF pilot training base at Benalla Airport was turned into a migrant holding centre to house displaced persons from Europe, who came to Australia as part of the Assisted Migration Programme.
Over the 18 years of its operation (1949–1967) 60,000 migrants made the camp their home, many for several years. In May 2015 the nine remaining huts on the former camp site, as well as its original entrance gates and roads, received state heritage listing as a result of a community-driven campaign, in recognition of its significance in showcasing an important part of Victoria’s cultural and social www.benallamigrantcamp.com.auhistory.

2. ‘SOPHIA’ OF GOORAMBAT
Western Australian street artist Sobrane Simcock was commissioned to paint the privately owned Tungamah Silos in 2018. This was the first silo painted in North East Victoria and Sobrane was the first Australian female silo artist. Sobrane has also added additional artworks to Tungamah on the wall the Tungamah Hotel and the Visitor Information Point.
This stunning visual tribute was created during the 2016 Wall to Wall Festival by renowned street artist Guide Van Helten. The commission saw Guido incorporate portraits of three local volunteers, Colin Hooke from Chesney Vale Fire Brigade, Robert Green of Taminick Fire Brigade and Danielle Spokes of Winton Fire Brigade. Access to the water tank is via Boggy Bridge Road and the road is unsealed.
‘Sophia’ came into being during the 2017 Wall to Wall Festival and can be found inside the Uniting Church. Artist Adnate created this stunning mural to depict the female aspect of the Holy Spirit. Sophia by nature is wise, nurturing, comforting, inspirational and ever present.

4. GRAINCORP ST JAMES SILO
This artwork, by artist Cam Scale, is a tribute to the men and women of the Devenish community who have enlisted in military service. The GrainCorp Devenish silos have long been a symbol of the prosperity of local grain production. That they now depict an aspect of military service provided by the community is a fitting link between the two.
3. GRAINCORP DEVENISH SILO
The Goorambat community is very proud to have Jimmy Dvate’s artwork not only adorn the silos, but now also the Big Shed. Jimmy is passionate about conservation and is particularly keen to highlight the plight of the endangered species. Goorambat also now has artwork by Simon White who has commissioned to paint the toilets between the Diggers Wife Café and Railway Hotel.
Painted by artist Tim Bowtell, the silos depict a mural of Sir George Coles, the founder of Coles supermarkets who was a local to the St James township. The silo bunkers at St James were built in 1943, with bushels of wheat originally delivered to the site via horse and cart; a motif that is displayed in the artwork.

The next stop is the Old Courthouse (now the Anglican Church and Parish) in Arundel Street. Built in 1864, the Courthouse was the venue for several of the Kelly family trials. The cell, in which Ned was once held, is still in its original Diagonallystate.
A visit to the Visitor Information Centre and Museum in Mair Street is a great starting point on your trip through Kelly country.
The Costume and Kelly Museum has an impressive collection of Ned Kelly memorabilia, including the blood-stained green silk sash worn by Ned during the Glenrowan siege and the portable police cell in which he was imprisoned. The museum also screens a video, which tells the story of the Kelly legend.
It was in Benalla that Ned Kelly had his first encounters with the law, hiding from police in the Old Bootmaker’s shop in Arundel Street and having his fate sealed at the Old Courthouse across the road.
The Gang surprised the police at their camp and, in the ensuing gun battle, three policeman were killed.

TOURING ROUTE
Continuing your tour on the touring route, stop in at the Commercial Hotel in Bridge St. Following the shooting of three policemen at Stringybark in 1878, the Kelly Gang were declared outlaws and a special police taskforce set up its headquarters at the Commercial Hotel in Benalla to co-ordinate the manhunt for the Kelly gang.
opposite is a small timber shop that used to be the Old Bootmaker’s shop — a real Kelly relic. It was here in 1877 that Ned Kelly burst into the shop having escaped police custody while en route to the courthouse. He was recaptured in the shop after a violent struggle with police.

ENJOY GOORAMBAT AND DEVENISH
It’s been described as the small town with the big art — but it’s much more than that. Goorambat is a town steeped in history. In 1954 it was chosen by the Queen for an overnight stay. It is also home to mechanical royalty, a classic 1960s tractor, with an intriguing back story.
A shed was built in 1987 with the aid of a Government Grant to preserve local agricultural machinery of the older generation of farmers.
Today’s modern machinery is in stark contrast to the exhibits which are well worth a look at this museum in Devenish.
It was subsequently sold and donated to the Goorambat Community Group who have taken care of it ever since. It is currently on display for the enjoyment of the general public.

Glenrowan was a quiet little stop-over and coach staging point between Benalla and Wangaratta until the events of June, 1880, blazed its name and that of Ned Kelly across the world.
Other places of interest include Kate’s Cottage Museum and Homestead — why not pick up a souvenir while there?
Glenrowan was named after farmers James and George Rowan who ran farms in the area between 1846 and 1858. The township was settled in the late 1860s. The Post Office opening on February 22, 1870.
