ELMORE FIELD DAYS AT HOME 2021

Inside Bringing Elmore to your kitchen table We should be spending the first week of October enjoying the Elmore Field Days. We should be wandering between equipment displays and machinery demonstrations, while enjoying the warm spring sun. We should be chatting to the experts and checking out the latest technology, then taking time out to watch the Ag Art Wear competition. We should be. But we aren’t. Much like 2020, 2021 has been riddled with disruption after disruption thanks to COVID-19, and it has sadly led to many agricultural events$—$including the annual threeday extravaganza that is Elmore Field Days$—$being cancelled.

Thank you for your continued support The Elmore Field Days Committee would like to thank everyone involved in the field days for being supportive and understanding during this time, including our exhibitors, committee, members, sponsors, community, volunteers and the public. Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the difficult decision was made to cancel the 2021 Elmore Field Days in the best interest of public health and safety for all those involved. We would like to thank Country News for producing this program and helping support our exhibitors during this tough time.

everyone back on-site for the 59th Elmore Field Days on October 4, 5 and 6, 2022. The Elmore Field Days Committee and staff have already started planning for the 2022 Elmore Field Days, and we are looking forward to a great event next year.

We look forward to welcoming

Scott Nichol Elmore Field Days president

It isn’t a decision anyone makes lightly and it affects everyone involved. Which is why the Elmore Field Days Committee and Country News have come together to bring you Elmore Field Days At Home. It’s our small show of support to those who support the field days. The businesses and the families who continue to stick by the field days through thick and thin. We hope this snippet is enough to get you through until 2022, when the next field days are scheduled for October 4, 5 and 6.

Thirty-five years of building sheds When it comes to structural sheds, Entegra’s signature designs are hard to beat. This year marks the manufacturer’s 35th anniversary, with outbuildings erected across Australia. At this year’s Elmore Field Days, Entegra was planning to showcase its newest trademarked design for shed gutters, Taperflow.

“The tapered gutters allow us to run more water without any overflow.” Entegra says farmers can still browse the company’s range of shed kits online, even if they can’t get to the Elmore Field Days this year.

“We’ve engineered a design for gutters,” Entegra marketing team leader Adam Smith said.

Mr Smith said they have four sizes available, and the purchase and installation process is also very simple.

“Instead of pipes going everywhere and coming down each column (of the shed), it just goes straight to the end, and then directly into the tank.”

“It’s like getting off the rack; they’re pre-engineered, ready to install, you just need to book in installation and delivery.”

It’s an easy add-on to shed designs, with no added plumbing required for installation.

If the pre-made shed kit doesn’t suit a client’s needs, the Entegra team is still available for custom designs.

“A lot less messy, much less cost after installation,” Mr Smith said.

Many farmers that approach Entegra have a specific idea of the structural shed they need, and staff are experienced in tailoring the design to suit.

“It’s as simple as calling up a tank supplier, and they can just connect it up on-site.” The design also means rainwater collection is much more efficient. Stuart Wilson, a mixed farmer from Campbells Forest in Victoria, recently installed an Entegra hayshed with Taperflow gutters, along with a 160,000-litre tank. “I rang Entegra and they were great to deal with,” he said.

Mixed farmer Stuart Wilson had an Entegra hayshed installed with Taperflow gutters earlier this year.

They will measure the shed on-site, draw up a layout and organise any permits on the client’s behalf before the shed is manufactured and installed. “We do have the capability to draft up a new design, and we will service a warranty on what actually gets installed,” Mr Smith said.

Entegra’s new Taperflow gutter funnels water to the end of the structure rather than to each bay.

We need to plan for the tough times We have had good winter rain in the Goulburn Valley and north along the Murray Darling Basin, and our storage dams are close to full. It was a stunning sight to see the Menindee lakes fill up with good flows in the Darling River. Water is plentiful across the regions, and this is a relief for farmers, but the next drought is always around the corner. The Goulburn Valley has seen a major decline in dairy farming, and it is important we maintain diversity in production across the valley. We need to ensure our horticulture and other agricultural industries remain strong to support the economy and our reputation as Australia’s food bowl.

The Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District Water Leadership Group, of which I am co-chair, is constantly monitoring changes in government legislation related to water allocation, practices, transparency and environmental damage. One of our major concerns in relation to safeguarding water in our district, is regulating floodplain harvesting in the Northern Murray Darling Basin. Harvesting of floodwater into private dams prevents water flowing consistently down the Darling River and breaks the connectivity between the Darling and Murray rivers.

This means water users along the Murray River need to give a greater allocation of their water to South Australia every year to make up the shortfall from the north. The GMID – and I as an independent Victorian MP – sent submissions to the New South Wales Floodplain Harvesting Inquiry to call for NSW to abide by the Murray Darling Basin Cap Agreement. We are also concerned about the environmental damage being done to the banks along the Goulburn River and the Barmah Choke and we are looking at ways this damage can be reduced with changed flow regimes.

From hard times to feeding the future Feedtech’s automatic feeders were born in the drought. “I had a lot of NSW farmers ringing up about needing to feed a lot of sheep,” Feedtech feeding system manager David Collier said. “We came up with the first auto system. Now they come anywhere from three to 57 metres, there are two varieties farmers can tow around and a cattle version which is the same but on steroids.” Run on either mains power or solar, the automatic feeders can be scheduled to release feed at customised times. “They are labour saving, cheaper than the traditional lick feeders and result in less feed wastage,” Mr Collier said. “Normally our famers want to feed out three times a day so they schedule three programs.”

“We’ve got users who are straight confinement feeding with them and using their land for cropping instead, the feedlotters and some who use them as induction onto grain,” Mr Collier said. The classic 12-metre solar-powered sheep feeder is priced at $9500, while a 21-metre mains power model is $8250.

Drought-stricken farmers fed the need for Feedtech’s designs.

A 21-metre mains power cattle feeder costs $14,846 while a solar version rings in at $17,846. A six-metre mobile sheep feeder with a hopper starts at $14,000. Troughs are sold in three-metre increments and units have adjustable PVC height, and the ability to be penned off either side using wire, W-strap or 25"mm square tubing. The solar options include one 270W panel and two 120Ah batteries. Solar units have the ability to Bluetooth to a solar controller, allowing for easy solar and battery status checking.

Feedtech now has an app attached to its products, which gives farmers live data from the feeders"—"including how much feed is being put out and alerts if something malfunctions.

Since starting in the drought, Feedtech had sold more than 185 units.

The feeders can run on solar or mains power.

Supplier knows exactly what you need As a busy operator of a successful sheep stud and farm, Ash Murphy of Rich River Rural knows firsthand what livestock farmers need. “We get a lot of repeat customers, a lot from around the area we’re from,” Mr Murphy said.

He knows to do the job right, farmers need the assurance of good quality, affordable products.

“Once they buy one thing, they will ring up and buy other items from our range.”

That’s the Rich River Rural motto after all. “We started Rich River Rural in January 2019,” Mr Murphy said.

The recent rise in sheep and cattle prices has had a flow-on effect for Rich River Rural as farmers are capitalising on high prices and upgrading their operations.

“We took a leap of faith and started from scratch.” Rich River Rural is the Australian distributor for Hecton Products from New Zealand, but also offers a range of other livestock equipment options from other brands.

As a result, the business has seen a huge increase in demand for innovative equipment, which Mr Murphy said was tailored towards simplifying and streamlining farm work.

The Echuca business stocks a wide range of products suited to the livestock market including autofeeders, weighing devices, loading ramps, shearing supplies, sheep yard panels and more. And while it supplies some cattle and horse handling equipment, the Rich River specialty is sheep yards and specialised sheep handling equipment. As the owner of Rich River Rural and a farmer himself, Mr Murphy knows his strongest sales tool is his own experience.

“The livestock prices at the moment are so good and people are investing their money back into equipment to make their jobs easier.” One of Rich River Rural’s double crutching trailers. He makes sure to use many of the products himself, which makes it easy for him to give customers solid recommendations. “When you’ve used it yourself, your advice is so much more authentic.

“(And) we just keep getting more and more stuff all the time.” If anything is a good measure of business, it’s loyal customers#—#and Rich River Rural has plenty of those.

Rich River Rural is also an agent and stockist for Feedtech, a Tatura business that manufactures livestock feeding systems and feedlotting solutions. For more information or to get in touch, visit the Rich River Rural website at richriverrural.com.au or phone 0409#957#446.

Family business is spreading its expertise A second-generation family-run business, Eastern Spreaders has a long history with agricultural machinery. It began with Albert Freeman in 1989. Intent on marketing the Marshall Multispread spreader he helped develop, Albert kickstarted Eastern Spreaders. More than 30 years later, Albert’s son Steve now sits at the helm of the ship, with the passion for Marshall spreaders stronger than ever. Considered to be one of the best spreaders on the market, the Marshall spreader offers durability and simplicity#—#with its range of features including reliable steel rollers, an endless belt feed system and hydraulic spinner drives. Designed to efficiently distribute pellet and powder fertilisers across paddocks to increase crop yields and provide essential plant nutrients, the Freemans have kept a keen eye on the development of the humble spreader over the years. “I’ve seen spreaders develop from tow-behind very basic machines to the technology we have today,” Steve said. “In the last three years the variable rate technology (such as the Marshall i4M system) has really taken off.” Variable rate technology combines agronomist maps and intelligent dispensing systems to change and log dispensing rates, making the spreading job far easier and more efficient.

In the i4M system, as the spreader moves across the field the purpose-built app uses Wi-Fi, an electronics module fitted to the spreader and agronomist-generated maps to set the right dispensing rate as you move and adjusts automatically.

An NDEco FS1000 feed mixer on offer from Eastern Spreaders, which has a 28.4 cubic metre capacity, side doors and a 9ft elevator.

Steve said the system could be retrofitted to most older spreader systems and can run with any tractor, making it more popular on newer models he sends out which his customers love. “About 30 to 40 per cent of bigger machines that are sold are going out with the variable rate,” he said. This has made the lives of farmers much easier, as less product is wasted, fertiliser application is more accurate and farm efficiency is improved. Steve personally knows, and is friendly with, a large portion of his client base, who are themselves second, third and fourth generation farmers and whose families began work with Albert in the 1980s. “Quite a few of our client base have become family friends,” he said. This friendliness forms a large part of the attentive 24-hour service Eastern Spreaders provides to its customers. The team makes sure there’s always someone to talk to, although COVID-19 has meant “sitting down for a cuppa” is online rather than in-person.

mills across Australia, and distribute New Zealand-based company Rotorwiper’s weed wiper range throughout eastern Australia. For more information, contact Eastern Spreaders online at easternspreaders.com.au or by phone on (03)#5450#3077.

Brokering the best deal For farmers looking to finance a loan, finding a reliable broker is the first step. Mr Westblade said.

At Brokerhouse, the specialised team for equipment and commercial loans has extensive experience in customising the loan for the client.

Now back in the office, regular communication and on-site calls have resumed to assist in providing clients with flexible loans and finance.

“Whatever the farmer’s terms, we can finance the plant and equipment,” Brokerhouse consultant Andrew Westblade said.

Mr Westblade said the team tailored finance to suit the business structure and needs. From there, the business owner can identify clear objectives for the finance and Brokerhouse can change the loan to suit.

“If they want annual payments with crop proceeds, or if they want complete finance of the product, no deposit down, or if they want five years with a balloon payment.”

“More flexibility is what they’re after,” he said.

In business since 1995 with offices in Shepparton, Bendigo and Echuca, the Brokerhouse team has more than 20 years of experience.

“Our niche difference is the fact that we can go longer term and complete finance on the whole cost.”

Services encompass finance for home loans and businesses, and brokering deals for Goulburn Valley farmers and beyond.

The flexibility for farmers means they can plan their finance to suit their unique circumstances. “To get really good interest rates, the dealer generally wants a 20 per cent deposit, or they want the facility paid back over three years or four years,” Mr Westblade said.

“We’re not really limited by location, we deal with clients all over Victoria and the southern Riverina,” Mr Westblade said. Throughout coronavirus lockdowns across Victoria, Brokerhouse has kept its door (virtually) open for clients.

“Quite often a farmer doesn’t want to do that or can’t do that.” Visit brokerhouse.com.au or the teams at Shepparton, Echuca and Bendigo to find the right finance for you.

“We can talk to clients on the phone, we can email and do Zoom calls, whatever they require,”

Catering for landowners with casual green thumbs, Dissy Machinery’s product line is tailored to those who wish to get creative in the backyard without calling in the heavy artillery. “Not everyone with land is a fulltime farmer, and therefore doesn’t need or want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on equipment they might only need to use once or twice a year,” director Alison Diss explained.

“We focus on people out there that own two to 200 acres$—$they are the people we want to help. “With our range you don’t even need a tractor.” It’s been quite the journey from the business’ inception in 2009 to now. Petrol-powered go karts, small water pumps and the like were just some of the miscellaneous items which made up the business’ stock profile during its formative years. Then they found their niche.

“We have a range of ATV/tow behind equipment such as stick rakes and flail mowers that simply attach on a vehicle’s tow ball,” she said.

“Of course we also have a full range of affordable tractor implements from grader blades, wood chippers, rippers and slashers plus our own petrol-powered or three-point linkage log splitters.” One hot new product offered exclusively at Dissy Machinery is the Mini Beast, a 1200$mm rideon mower landscape stick rake attachment. It’s the perfect accessory for effortlessly raking up leaves, bark, sticks and twigs around the grounds$—$and with 18 spring steel tines, there’s little else to worry about other than towing it behind your mower. Once the rake is full, simply pull the handle to release what has been collected. Weighing about 26$kg, Ms Diss said these units were perfect for ride-on mowers, where bigger ATV stick rakes are too heavy. But durable wares are only half the promise at Dissy Machinery. “Dissy Machinery products are sent out all over Australia,” Ms Diss said. “Whether you’re in-store, chatting to us over the phone or ordering from our website, you will always get friendly service and advice. “We pride ourselves on our customer service and getting you the right machine for the job.”

Delivering strong and simple products A trusted brand that has stood the test of time, KEENAN prides itself as being industry leaders in the agricultural manufacturing space in Australia. Renowned for its impeccable customer service, the company prides itself on being accessible to its clients and reliable in providing state-of-the-art machinery.

Inspired solutions for orchard problems When you are getting to the critical end of the horticultural year, it’s time to sit down and do some serious number crunching. If you’re looking for some inspiration as to how you might tackle labour shortages while optimising the value of your crop, you need to see Inspired Ag. The team don’t just have the most innovative gear on the market, they are fifth generation orchardists themselves and know exactly what you are facing in 2022. With the first tip being now is the time for orchardists to plan for their 2022 orchard capital investments. Inspired Ag was founded by growers Chris and Alex Turnbull, working closely alongside product designer and researcher Corey Beecroft. Together, they have drawn on global research and networks, and partnerships built across generations!—!from established fruit growing families in the United States to university researchers in Italy. After more than a decade of small and large-scale trials on their Goulburn Valley property, they have more than proved their systems are a success when it comes to planting, enhancing and protecting horticultural assets. Inspired Ag’s chief operating officer Catriona Saunders said the business had brought together all sorts of innovative equipment to assist horticultural operations!—!from pome and stone fruit to citrus and grapes. With COVID-19 restrictions creating critical labour shortages, Ms Saunders said the Inspired Ag team was seeing a lot of interest in labour-saving equipment, such as platforms. “Our customers are seeing incremental savings from the BILLO platforms; not only in harvest, but year-round,” she said. “Orchardists are finding platforms deliver a really quick return on investment and are looking to add more to their fleets in coming seasons.” BILLO platforms come in either flatdeck models or a conveyor model. The flat-deck models give plenty of scope for supporting yearround orchard activities, while 20

ELMORE FIELD DAYS @ HOME 2021

the conveyor model takes harvest efficiencies to a new level and broadens out the picking labour pool. All models can be custom-built with a large number of add-on accessories and modifications. “A newer piece of labour-saving technology!—!the leaf remover!—!is gaining traction in Australia following success in the US and New Zealand,” Ms Saunders said. “It is being used in the apple industry about 10 to 14 days before harvest to remove leaves that are covering apples and exposing the fruit to sunlight. “For optimal results, orchardists are using the Olmi, followed by our reflective matting to get fantastic colouring.” Inspired Ag also produces a range of retractable hail nets and rain covers, designed by Corey Beecroft. Ms Saunders said Inspired Ag measures each block, then gets the netting made-to-order by its manufacturers.

KEENAN Australia business manager Donal Blackwell explained what services the company provides. “At KEENAN we provide a quality service to our mixer wagon machines in the market,” Mr Blackwell said. “Our machines are of different sizes with two different styles!—!there is the long-standing KEENAN paddle mixer wagon machines (8 cubic metres to 28 cubic metres in size) and the new range of vertical auger mixer wagon machines (18 cubic metres to 44 cubic metres in size). “With all the machines we provide as standard the unique InTouch weighbox technology that allows farmers, operators and consultants to send rations to the weigh-box via the cloud and also takes the operator in a step-by-step loading order of ingredients into the mixer wagon. “We also provide a local region 24/7 maintenance service, which is there to help with emergency mechanical situations as well as a nutrition support program for the first year of machine ownership.” A company that has experienced great success over the past 25 years, Mr Blackwell explained what he believes separates KEENAN from its competitors. “Longevity in the market is the key!—!KEENAN has been in the Australian market for over 30 years and the machine is a strong and simple product that has stood the

test of time and continues to deliver results,” he said. “Reputation is very important in this industry and we fully expect to be around for at least another 30 years delivering a high quality product to our customers.” Mr Blackwell said they had been planning to show-off a number of products to their strong Victorianbased clientele at this year’s Elmore Field Days. “The machines we were planning to feature on the farm were going to be our Mech Fiber MF380, which is a 24 cubic metre bale handler, along with our Vertical Auger VA2–24, meaning it is a 24 cubic metre machine,” he said. “We currently have a wide range of machines on stock with old steel pricing. We are looking to do a 10 per cent discount on recommended retail pricing for the purposes of the field days event, which can be found on our website and quoting #KEENANElmore21.” Despite the online alternatives KEENAN is offering its customers, Mr Blackwell said it was disappointing to not be attending the event this year. “It is a huge blow because one desperately misses being able to press the flesh with both existing and new customers. “We have found at events such as Elmore Field Days new customers will meet us for the first time and purchase our products along with meeting current customers, so it is devastating we can’t be there this year and we are all looking forward to Elmore Field Days 2022.”

“Orchardists save on project costs and it gives them the flexibility to work around blocks that aren’t symmetrical.” Ms Saunders said the company had developed a complementary steel structure system to support the netting. These same steel structures can also be used for trellising. Critically, the steel structures have been designed to be self-installed. The Inspired Ag team provide draughtsman drawings and a comprehensive instruction guide to assist with getting the job done. Ms Saunders said given global supply chain issues!—!from stock to shipping!—!it is critical orchardists plan their capital needs well in advance. “The team at Inspired Ag are here to help orchardists to discuss their future equipment investments.” Contact the team on 1800!224!996 or sales@inspiredag.com.au. Stock your dam with native fish It’s all in the name when it comes to Australian Fish Sales. An indoor fish farm operating on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australian Fish Sales sells live native fingerlings throughout Victoria, NSW, the ACT and into South Australia. Owned and operated by Jason Buzzini, the company stocks silver perch, golden perch, Australian bass, Murray cod and tandanus catfish. “Our market focus is predominantly on stocking of private dams and to a lesser extent people wanting to stock their aquaponics and aquariums,” Mr Buzzini said. He said dams were largely an underutilised part of a property, and stocking them with fish provided some great ecological benefits to the dam"—"including mosquito and algae control. “Customers also buy them for recreational use. It’s great fun to fish them. “People have also started thinking of them as an alternative food source.” Once released the fish do not require any supplementary feeding as they will have a constant food

source in the dam, he said. “The growth rate of the fish is from fingerling to a plate size in approximately two years.” Mr Buzzini sells his fingerlings in bulk"—"100 fish per purchase. The amount of fish that you can stock in a dam without any additional infrastructure can be calculated by counting the number of steps around the circumference of the dam. One step equals one fish. “We do sell them in smaller quantities, but the bulk buy is the best value,” he said. The species Australian Fish Sales stock are suitable for almost all dams but there are considerations for what species is best for you and your area. Made for farmers, by farmers No-one knows better than Bruce Clarke when it comes to what a farmer needs in a trailer. So it’s a good thing he’s in the business of manufacturing heavy duty, multipurpose trailers. A livestock and contract harvesting farmer from Goomalling in Western Australia on the side, Mr Clarke is also the director of Universal Trailers.

The trailers at Universal Trailers are designed for ease of use and safety, including A-frame bracing, rocker roller suspension, specially welded spring hangers and a heavy-duty chassis design. The advantage of their made-toorder production means custom work is sometimes possible, unlike importers who sell what has been made by their suppliers.

“I felt there was no trailer specifically made for farmers, so I started making trailers specially designed for farmers for multiple uses,” he said.

“If they need it, we can do it,” Mr Clarke said.

“We started off doing feeders because the ones on the market were too light#—#so I thought we may as well go and make trailers.”

And this hard work has paid off, with more and more work arriving by word of mouth and first-hand experience.

Twelve years later, the feeder production is still in high demand, which Mr Clarke said uses a similar process design and manufacture as the trailers, incorporating specialised design and tried-andtested innovation.

“We get a lot of repeat customers, that’s a big part of it. I have one client who bought one last year, then has gone and bought two more this year,” Mr Clarke said.

“We’re using the trailers and feeders, so we can find little faults and issues and test and prototype them ourselves,” he said.

Bruce Clarke started off making feeders and expanded his business into manufacturing high-quality trailers.

In an average year the business would build 270 to 300 trailers. However, 2021 has gone gangbusters#—#300 trailers already produced by September with another 50-plus ordered.

Universal Trailers makes heavy duty trailers by farmers, for farmers. In the spirit of a true-blue Aussie family business, Mr Clarke has now passed the business along to his son Ben, although he still heavily involved. “With Ben taking over the future’s

One of these students is Sophia Varley, an accomplished soccer keeper and defender, who was signed by Melbourne City Football Club earlier this year. The Year 12 student, who boards at Wesley College, said donning the City Blue jersey was nothing short of a dream come true. From her family’s livestock farm at Finley in southern NSW, to life at Wesley’s Learning in Residence (LiR) in Glen Waverley in Melbourne’s east, Sophia is certainly kicking goals on the soccer field and in the classroom. Sophia credits the support she received at Wesley College with helping her on her way to this success.

“Boarding on campus just makes life so much easier; everything is so accessible, and it gives me more time to apply myself in other areas.” A typical day for Sophia in LiR starts with breakfast served in the dining hall, followed by classes, study and afternoon sport. She also has opportunities to try her hand at performing arts and other cocurricular activities. LiR for Sophia has also been about celebrating diversity as a part of her learning experience.

The LiR program is designed on learner-centred principles and has helped Sophia progress as an athlete while maintaining high academic standards.

“During our weekly residence meetings, I learn a lot, get insights into a variety of different cultures and even learn some languages! This has definitely helped me shape the way I perceive the world.”

As a boarder, Sophia has access to extensive sporting facilities including gyms, swimming pools and pitches, as well as round-theclock support from teachers and mentors, all which have helped her progress with her sporting goals and academic development.

The LiR staff place equal amounts of emphasis on academic, social and emotional wellbeing"—"inside and outside the classroom. One of the most exciting changes for the boarders at LiR this year has been new private Year 12 rooms,

Dedicated to making farms safer

The safety and wellbeing of Victorian farming families is of paramount importance to the VFF. Picture: VFF

Since its inception in 1979, the Victorian Farmers Federation has been dedicated to improving the interests of farmers and rural communities. And more than 40 years on, it continues to deliver on its promise. The VFF is currently implementing its Making Our Farms Safer project, the latest of the lobby group’s initiatives. Creating a safe environment and workplace on all Victorian farms is now one of the organisation’s most crucial assignments. “It’s very important that we deliver this project,” senior farm safety adviser John Darcy said. “The agriculture industry had one of the highest rates of mortality in the last decade. We had way too many deaths on Victorian farms. “We want to improve the safety standard in the industry and improve the culture along the way.” Last year, WorkSafe Victoria released mortality figures which showcased the need for action. From 2010 to 2019, the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry made up almost a third of all workplace-

related deaths. In 2017, there were 14 deaths on farms#—#the highest number of farmrelated fatalities since 2004. The Making Our Farms Safer project is funded by Smarter, Safer Farms, a $20 million Victorian Government commitment to improve safety standards on farms. The funding has allowed the VFF to employ dedicated safety specialists to provide a range of services to farm businesses. The VFF program is focused on delivering the following outcomes: greater access to farm safety support and resources; higher level of awareness of the farm safety and wellbeing services provided by the VFF; greater understanding of farm safety and wellbeing, as well as farmers’ rights and responsibilities; and the use of improved farm safety practices by farmers, their workers and families. Mr Darcy and farm safety adviser

officer Richard Versteegen are both at the helm of the project. “The VFF is delivering the Making Our Farms Safer project, which is funded by the Victorian Government through the Smarter, Safer Farms commitment,” Mr Darcy said. “Myself and Richard spend three days a week at farms to do free safety checks and to guide farmers through safety guidelines. “The project started in October last

year and will run until July 2023. “So far we have visited over 100 farms all over Victoria. “We are providing free OHS (occupational health and safety) support for all farmers free of charge. “We have created safety manuals, checklists, handbooks as well as a monthly newsletter and we are in the process of creating a dedicated website.” If you wish to be involved, visit: vff.org.au/project/making-ourfarms-safer

Niche products for niche markets Armour Group prides itself on importing the best specialist agricultural equipment from Europe, that’s designed to suit the harsh Australian environment. Having been in the agricultural machinery business for more than 50 years, the family-owned and operated business in Bowral, NSW, is well-equipped to source equipment including mulchers, harrows, manure spreaders, turf mowers, a broad range of trailers, seeders, harrows, hoes and bale wrappers. They source machinery from a wide range of well-known manufacturers including Wessex, Stewart Trailers, Vigolo, EM Machinery, Gil Seeders, Humus Mulchers, Ventura Forestry Mulchers and Blaney Agri. Import and sales manager Owen Dunlop said they worked with European manufacturers to tailor machinery that lasted. “We’re not everything to everybody, we’re most things to certain people. We provide niche products to niche markets,” Mr Dunlop said.

Mr Dunlop said the experienced Armour Group team took a solutionfocused approach to meet each customer’s need. “We identify the problem, then we work out the solution for that problem,” he said. On the rare occasion they could not supply a particular product, Mr Dunlop said they would work with the customer to explore other options, rather than selling them unnecessary equipment. “If I don’t have the solution for your problem, I’m not going to sign you up for something that’s useless.”

Straighten out your fencing problems As a fencing contractor, Peter Barrett was pretty fed-up with not having access to quality end assemblies and strainers that could consistently deliver the required wire tension. So he decided the industry needed a serious solution, and he was just the man to straighten out the fencing business!—!enter Fence-Line Solutions. Mr Barrett designed and patented the first generation of Fence-Line Solutions products!—!including wire strainers, wire joining tools and end assemblies!—!more than 25 years ago.

One of Fence-Line Solutions’ wire spinners, designed for ease of use and to prevent wire tangling.

He is also responsible for the brand’s figure 8 wire joining tool, which allows wire to be joined under tension. And he went on to improve the design of the wire strainer to alleviate safety and ease of operation issues. Fence-Line has a range of signature end-assembly or straining post products, including the Stayblock!—!a concrete block that secures the end assembly and features easy installation and low maintenance, with a significantly lower risk of damage compared with other products on the market. “Even in some of the bushfires, some of our fences have held,” office manager Louise Morton said.

“For the wire strainers, Peter introduced a tension gauge which allowed people to see exactly how much tension there was under strain. “He also changed the way the wire is gripped by the jaws by using a spring to operate them. “At the moment Peter’s in the middle of a new brace system that will complement the end assembly.” Word-of-mouth has been a powerful marketing weapon for Fence-Line, especially with the company’s commitment to constant innovation. “I often get calls saying, ‘We used them on a job site, they’re great, can I get a set’,” Ms Morton said. “(With that kind of feedback) we just know we’ve got a great product.” She estimated Fence-Line Solutions sold “close to 1000” wire strainers each year, to farmers doing their own fence work and to fencing contractors.

“Our products are good, Australian-made products to last,” Ms Morton said.

The business also distributes its products through rural networks such as Landmark and Nutrien Ag Solutions, and has created a wholesale market on the back of that marketing milestone; consolidating the Fence-Line Solutions partnership with its customers.

“We started off with the Stayblocks and wire straining, from there Peter’s just kept developing our products to be the best.”

For more information, visit Fence-Line Solutions at fencelinesolutions.com.au or phone (03)!5755!1334.

But even better than that, all FenceLine products are designed for the Australian terrain.

Peter Barrett of Fence-Line Solutions specially designed this wire strainer for precise straining and easy operation.

She said Fence-Line’s range was continually being refined and improved to ensure it remains at the cutting edge of the industry.

Canopies give extra protection Action Steel, otherwise known as ‘The Big Shed People’, know a little something about sheds. So when the third-generation, family-run Stawell business says canopies are becoming a more common addition to farm shed projects, you should probably listen. Especially for haysheds, machinery and machinery workshop sheds, canopies are ‘it and a bit’ for every farmer. But why are canopies becoming so popular, you might ask. According to the experts, canopies can offer you extra protection by keeping your hay and miscellaneous machinery safe from damaging weather. This is made easier by the lack of columns on the outside of the canopy, meaning wide gear and trucks can

be driven undercover easily (without needing to be folded up). With hi-bay lights suspended from trusses, canopies are perfectly set up for you to conduct repairs or use as shelter any time of the day.

Buying a tank has never been easier Polymaster’s newest AR technology takes ‘try before you buy’ to a whole new level. The business most well-known for its range of practical and sturdy water tanks is a long-time employer of computer technology to enhance their online customer service experience. They began with ‘build your own tank’ software, giving the design tools to the client so they can create a custom tank to suit their needs. Polymaster’s tanks can be customised to hold as little as 200!litres of water or up to as much as 50,000!—!all made out of Colorbond steel in 22 different colours. Now, the company’s new ‘view in home’ feature helps customers visualise the tank by using 3D and AR (augmented reality) technology. Marketing manager Yvette Fitzpatrick said the new feature was already popular. “Feedback from our retailers is that it’s a really great tool for their customers to use,” she said. “They love that we have embraced technology to help customers choose products, especially with many not wanting to come into store due to COVID.”

By clicking the ‘View in Home’ button on their mobile phone, customers can focus the camera on the location they’re planning to install the tank and check the size, colour and other features are correct. For those designing their tank on a desktop, they just need to scan the QR code with their phone to access the feature. It also upgrades Polymaster retailers to virtual showrooms, further streamlining the purchase experience in store. “Our stores have a virtual showroom at their fingertips, enabling them to help customers make purchase decisions easier,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. Many other products are also available for test runs, like diesel ute packs, feeders and hay racks. The online and in-store purchasing experience is followed by fast delivery for tanks. “We have the fastest lead times for delivery of rainwater tanks,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. “Twenty-one days from placement of order within Victoria, South Australia and southern NSW.”

Polymaster’s tanks are designed to withstand harsh Australian conditions, and have sturdy warranties to match. Family-owned Polymaster has been manufacturing quality poly storage products since 1994. Designed to withstand harsh Australian conditions, their water tanks, animal feeders and other farm equipment have been the

choice for Aussie farmers across the country. The products are backed with solid warranties, and the warranties on their certified round water tanks have recently increased from 10 to 20 years of coverage.

Punching above their weight A rapidly growing player in the weighing industry, Anmar Scales promises its customers a fast and on-time service with fixed prices and locally made Aussie products.

Managing director Marty Barlow explained the services his company provides clients all over NSW and Victoria.

One way Anmar is looking to separate itself from the pack is by emphasising the importance of developing the next generation.

“Anything in the weighing industry really, from sales of new equipment, service, maintenance and we are doing more and more in the agriculture industry in terms of weighbridges and those sorts of things,” Mr Barlow said.

“We are trying to get apprentices through as well and it seems like there are a lot of other people in this industry that aren’t doing the training which leaves a bit of a hole there,” Mr Barlow said.

Acquiring A&C Scales in 2017, Anmar Scales"—"as it is known today"—"has only been around for four years. However in that time, the company has already made a significant impact on the industry and is growing by the day. “After the acquisition (of A&C Scales) that helped us expand into different industries, including weighbridges, so we now have a base in Albury as well as our original office in Melbourne as well,” Mr Barlow said. “Our main focus is just continuing to grow; there are a lot of businesses in this industry that have been around for a long time while we haven’t"—"so for us it is about continuing to expand by employing more people to cover more ground and in the end provide a better service.”

“It is very hard to get a start in this industry so we are very committed to helping those young people coming through and is a major part of our vision as we move forward as a company.”

Anmar Scales are a staple of the local weighing industry.

Like all businesses over the past 18 months, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed a burden on Anmar, as they have gone about trying to manage having one office in Victoria and another over the border in NSW. “Compared to other people we have been pretty lucky because we have been able to operate and service a lot of essential customers which has been good,” Mr Barlow said “The biggest problem for us has been the border closures. Last year there were two or three months we couldn’t even get to our Albury office, so hundreds of hours have

“I really thought Elmore might have been the one to go ahead, we had spent a lot of money on marquees and promotion stuff to get set up so it is disappointing"—"but we have all the stuff still and will be able to use it next year if it goes ahead.”
