MESSENGER AUGUST 2019
MEMORIAL DRIVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
@MemorialDriveUMC @mdumc
Disciples of Jesus continually study, read scripture, and explore their faith together.
Disciples of Jesus share common life together in prayer, community, and regular gathering.
Disciples of Jesus give of their time, energy, and resources to the local church to enable the sharing of the gospel.
Disciples of Jesus demonstrate God’s love through acts of service in our neighborhoods and all over the world.
How are you learning, living, giving, and serving? We are so excited to begin exploring how we at MDUMC take our next steps with God. This fall, we will be focusing our ministry in the four areas of learning, living, giving and serving. As you can see from the descriptions to the right, these four areas are essential on our faith journey. We as a church will begin using this language to assist in our understanding of how we are growing as followers of Jesus and how we can invite others to do the same! These concepts will be introduced in their fullness during our 167 sermon series beginning on August 18th and at The Gathering on August 20th at the Journey Worship Center. We hope you will take part in these opportunities and work towards taking your next steps in the coming season.

CELEBRATING: WORKCAMP
One of my favorite Workcamp experiences was on Thursday night. We had just finished having our nightly worship service and special communion. One of my small group leaders asked me to sit down with him and have a one-on-one conversation where topics such as faith family and everyday life are discussed. This one-on-one, however, seemed to be much different. We cried together due to our similar childhood upbringings. It was a transformative time sharing our emotions and realizing that there are many other people who are fighting just like me. Through my small group leader, I truly felt God’s love poured into me which I had felt very deprived of for a long time. Over the past five years Workcamp has introduced me to hundreds of people each with beautifully unique stories and experiences. I am forever grateful for all that MDUMC has done for me. STEPHEN CHO
HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity of attending my third High School Workcamp. Although I typically do many things over the course of my summers, Workcamp has always been one of my absolute favorites. Not only do I get to spend a week with some of my best friends, but I also get to spend a week changing people’s lives- all while profoundly strengthening my faith and growing so much closer to God. From our nightly worship to our long, hard, and hot workdays, it is amazing to me that I can help positively impact other people’s lives, all while mine is being so positively impacted, too. I consider Workcamp to be one of my greatest privileges, and the impact that Workcamp has had on my life and my faith is such an incredible blessing. Due to the many opportunities provided to me through this church, I have no doubt that this is the strongest my faith has ever been, and I believe a lot of that faith has blossomed due to my experiences at High School Workcamp. MDUMC STORIES: KENYA
”
My heart explodes with joy and appreciation of what we were able to be a part of, and even more excitement to be a part of the change for years to come.
Jambo, friends, and Asante Sana for all the support you have given to international mission trips. Just a couple months ago, I couldn’t fully comprehend what I would be embarking upon when I agreed to participate in a 17-day mission trip to Kenya. But now, my heart explodes with joy and appreciation of what we were able to be a part of, and even more excitement to be a part of the change for years to come.
I have always loved mission work, but have only participated in local mission work. Although I have loved serving my neighbors in need, I struggle with the notion, ”Am I putting a Band-Aid on a problem, or am I really making a difference?” I will tell you this was never a doubt when in Kenya. We have been in a long-term partnership with the Maua Methodist Hospital for years (this was our 17th year to bring a mission team from MDUMC). We work year-round with those at the hospital to keep the mission alive and figure out what is needed next. My first day in Kenya, I knew I was a part of something bigger, something constant and something that was truly making a difference. Our days in mission were split into two communities. We spent a week in Maua where we built a house for an AIDS orphan and his family, conducted a medical camp in a remote part of Kenya with the help of the hospital staff and nursing students, and assisted in installing a security system at the Maua Hospital. We also had many side projects we participated in around the area. These included organizing a library at the local technical school, visiting patients we have developed relationships with in past missions, delivering blankets to infants and children at the hospital, assisting the chaplain in her patient consults, observing surgeries, and helping with personnel at the hospital. From Maua, we made our way to a town outside of Nakuru to visit an orphanage. We had 3 days to love and care for 17 of the most beautiful children God has ever created. Although the odds were stacked against them in their younger years, we got to witness their lives now thriving. The team has watched many of these kids grow from toddlers to university students. I can’t wait to see these 17 kids change the world! We spent our last three days as a team in awe of what we had witnessed on the landscape of the Masai Mara. Although a three day safari was an amazing experience, the part we all cherished the most was knowing we were continuing our MDUMC mission to Love God and Love Neighbor. Every year we journey to Kenya, the stories get more impactful, goals are met, and new visions are cast. Asante Sana for your support and prayers!

JAMAICA MISSION JULY 27 - AUGUST 2
Please be in prayer for our Jamaica Mission Team this month as they travel to Port Maria, Jamaica, to work on two churches, host VBS each day, and visit a children’s home from July 27th – August 2nd. If you would like to follow along with our missioners this summer, please check out our blog at mdumc.org/missionsblog. For all the pipe cleaners, paper plates, popsicle sticks, paint supplies, and prayers, every member of this year’s Jamaica Mission Team gives thanks to God. For the generous donations which will benefit many children, women, and men on the Island of Jamaica, those who may come to serve in mission, and the children of Pringle’s Children’s Home, every team member gives thanks to God who moved each of you to give. Thanks to every person who has offered a prayer, given words of encouragement, made a donation, and for all those who listened to the story of the Jamaica Mission Partnership on Sunday mornings. Each of you has directly blessed children, parents, pastors and school staff, and many others you will never meet, through the outpouring of your generosity.
