Q A

Teach Us To Pray Conference With Contemplative Teacher, Jerry Webber

How did you get started on this contemplative spiritual path? In the early 1990’s I was a Senior Pastor in a medium-sized church. I found myself doing things that were important for the congregation, but which drained life out of me. I began to explore, reading about spiritual practice by writers like Eugene Peterson and Richard Foster. I started hanging out with people from other Christian traditions, trying to learn about prayer from Episcopalians who prayed daily at set times and quiet Quakers... from gospel-oriented Mennonites and monastic Catholics... from Orthodox and Celtic Christians. I explored and experimented, and found life in giving attention to my inner life. I also found that tending the inner life meant that I engaged in service and ministry very differently than before. Over time, several years in fact, I discovered that I was also searching to find my own faith in God, rather than accepting without question the faith handed to me by family, church, and culture. So the quest for me was for an authentic expression of my own personhood in connection with God. I have to say that the journey has been incremental, at best. There has been no clear, straightline forward. I stumble ahead a step or two, then stall out, or step backwards. The journey for me has been full of fits and starts. And I’m nowhere near the destination. I’m constantly reminded that I’m only a beginner on this spiritual path, and will never be anything more than a beginner.

What seems important to you in an ongoing life of prayer and practicing God’s presence? A couple of things seem important, at least from my experience. First, we have to practice prayer and the spiritual life as an embodied experience, rather than merely study it or gain knowledge about it as a conceptual exercise. In other words, we learn and grow as we do, as we actually pray and make our spiritual experience real in daily life. I find too many people who study or read about contemplative spirituality as an object of interest or curiosity, but who do not actually embody it. The life of prayer and spirituality really is a life! Second, it’s helpful to cultivate an exploring spirit. This means being grounded in God’s love... there is nothing you can do or not do that will cause you to lose God’s love. God’s love for you is the one constant in life. God’s love is an always-everywhere reality. So you can afford to explore prayer and the spiritual life without fear that you will lose God’s love. This is a huge safety net. You’re not going to fall over the edge of the map in your explorations. So you can try new ways of prayer, things that are out of your comfort zone, things that seem to be the domain of another denomination. You’ll never lose God. So explore! My mentors always communicated to me that when you are tethered to God at the center, you can fly a long way out. That has been a guiding image for me through the years.

Why is Lent a time to talk about prayer and contemplative practice? Lent tends to be the season for a kind of spring cleaning of the soul. Many people already undertake spiritual practices during Lent. So I suggest that we ride the Lenten train... only that we shift our spiritual practices from giving up chocolate, soft drinks, or movies to something more substantial, something more transcendent. Let’s talk, instead, about spiritual practices that help shape our lives for the long haul. Let’s engage in practices that will truly shape us inwardly and will make a difference in this constantly shifting world... giving up anger for Lent, or judgments, or perfectionism, or the need to be liked.

Why do we call this conference Teach Us to Pray? In Luke 11:1, Jesus’ disciples say to him, “teach us to pray.” They have walked with Jesus, observed his life, witnessed his teaching and healing ministry, and noted his authority. They want what he has, but they don’t say, “teach us to heal,” or “teach us to cast out demons.” They saw – with spiritual intuition, I believe – that Jesus’ frequent times in solitude with his Abba deeply rooted him and shaped him in God. So they asked, “teach us to pray.” That is our request, too. We want the Spirit to shape us, to root us in God... so we say to God, “teach us to pray!” Teach us prayer beyond the beginnings. Teach us prayer that is more than “every head bowed and every eye closed.” Teach us prayer that is deeper than thoughts and words. Teach us prayer than is more about communion than asking... more transformation than transaction.

What should I bring to the conference? Bring with you a spirit of openness to what God might stir within your heart... bring a willingness to engage in some things that might seem outside the box for you... bring a spirit of intentionality about spiritual things in your life.

SAVE THE DATE - VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2020 JULY 13 - 17 | 9 AM - 12 PM

North Castle is hidden in a frozen land. The King’s valiant Knights are on a quest in search of the King’s Armor. But the armor isn’t what they think it is. Knights of North Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor invites children to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power by exploring how we put on the armor of God. Kids will take on the role of brave Knights and begin their quest each session by opening the King’s Book. They’ll explore Old and New Testament stories and discover different pieces of protective armor—the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Justice, the Shoes of Peace, the Shield of Faith, and the Helmet of Salvation—at work in the lives of familiar Bible characters, and explore how that armor works in their own lives as they follow and serve God. Registration opens March 1 at mdumc.org/children. Volunteers are needed and appreciated!

MDUMC ORGAN SERIES | BRADLEY WELCH FEBRUARY 23 | 7PM | SANCTUARY

To invoke an old Southern expression, Bradley Hunter Welch plays the organ like nobody’s business. With the virtuosity of the playing and the easy going spoken commentary, he quickly proves that entertainer and organist are not mutually exclusive. Hailed as “A world-class virtuoso” (The American Organist) and “an expert at defining darks, lights, shadows and colors” (Birmingham News, Alabama), Dr. Welch is increasingly in demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and collaborative artist. He is the Resident Organist at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas and Artist-inResidence at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting musical opportunity! All are welcome.

THE RESTORATION TEAM: FAR FROM FINISHED FEBRUARY 29, APRIL 25 & MAY 16 | 9 - 3 PM

Volunteers are in urgent need to help our rebuild work teams restore homes flooded by Harvey. No experience is required, and training is provided on site. Typical work will include installing sheetrock, insulation, or painting. There are roughly 60,000 homes still awaiting assistance, leading FEMA to anticipate a ten-year rebuild. As more and more organizations run out of funding and close their doors, The Restoration Team remains committed to Houston and its families in need. We will continue to engage the local church, expand partnerships, develop sustainable and resilient building practices, and serve as the hand and feet of Jesus Christ. Register today for an upcoming work day at mdumc.org/missions or contact KandiceKirby@mdumc.org if you are ready to serve!

HUNGER DOESN’T TAKE A BREAK THROUGH MARCH 8

Our Backpack Blessings ministry will be collecting food donations for Thornwood Elementary and college students at Texas Southern University to help alleviate hunger during the Spring Break holiday. There are more than 11 million children in this country who are food insecure, and the consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we want to make sure they’re getting nutritional meals over holidays, as well. You can place donations of peanut butter, jelly (no glass jars), canned soup, chili, dry pasta, rice, cereal/granola bars, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables or fruit, canned chicken or tuna, and oatmeal in the collection bins located on both campuses.

You would have one student and meet once or twice a week. If you are interested or need more information, please contact SedoniaFinstad@mdumc.org or visit mdumc.org/crosswalk.

2020 MISSIONS | GLOBAL TEAMS

We believe that Disciples of Jesus demonstrate God’s love through acts of service in our neighborhoods and all over the world. Missions are transformative, and it is impossible to return home unchanged. Serving alongside others and seeing injustice in our world fosters a need to tell the story of our experience and expose the issues affecting our neighbors. If you are prepared to say yes, God will use you to change lives, build the Church, and impact communities around the world. Missions are part of the faith journey of the entire church, not just those who are physically able to make the journey. There’s a place for anyone to become active in missions by serving on a team, giving generously to missions, and most importantly, supporting our teams and those they serve with prayer. We hope you’ll plan to join us at either of the following interest meeting for 2020 mission trips. You can meet team leaders, find out information on what it’s like to serve on a mission team, details about each mission team, and more! We hope to see you there.

EASTERN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES

THURSDAYS, JANUARY 30 & FEBRUARY 6 1 – 2:30 PM OR 7 – 8:30 PM | D202 LEADER: GARLAND SMITH | NO CHARGE

The First Council of Ephesus in 431 deposed Nestorius, the Bishop in Constantinople. For the next 1,000 years, the Nestorian Church and the Jacobites would be largest and most coherent part of Christianity. The Crusades, the Turks, the Mongols, and Islam would then bring down the Eastern Christian churches. Today, few people know anything about this very colorful, vibrant, devout part of Christian heritage. This course will look at the Nestorians (the Eastern Syriac Church) and the Jacobites (the Western Syriac Church) which were such an important part of early Christianity.

SENSING GOD: LEARNING TO MEDITATE DURING LENT

THURSDAYS BEGINNING MARCH 5 (5 WEEKS) 2:30 – 3:30 PM | D200 | $13 LEADER: BETTY CARTMELL Many people feel drawn to what meditation offers (quiet, reflection, stillness, time alone with God), but few have tried it. In Sensing God, monk, priest, and spiritual teacher Laurence Freeman OSB may just change some minds. Is Lent a time for “giving something up” or an occasion for beginning something new? Freeman shows how it can be both. Give up your lifestyle (at least for a season) of being too busy to sit still and begin to discover what meditation can do in your life.

During this 4-week session, we will gather, learn more about how Home Groups work at MDUMC, why they are so vital to Christian life, and what you need to do to get connected to a specific group meeting near you, or on a schedule compatible with your life, or how to start a new group. Our 90 minutes together will be a combination of teaching and table conversation.

GIDEON’S MIGHT: A HOME GROUP FOR PARENTS WITH SPECIAL KIDS THURSDAYS | 6 - 7:30 PM MAIN CAMPUS ROOM C202

All are welcome at this spiritual community for special families. Gideon’s Might is a Home Group for parents with special children who are still school-age. We meet for worship, mutual support, and prayer for 90 minutes each week. Contact Rita Abiodun at renekypasso15@ yahoo.com for more information.

HOME GROUP HOST ORIENTATION

FEBRUARY 9 | 12:10 - 2 PM MAIN CAMPUS UPSTAIRS CONFERENCE ROOM Hundreds of people are interested in joining a Home Group and we need hosts! Hosting a Home Group is easier than you might think. Attend this lunchtime orientation to learn about the simple format we use for our groups, ask questions, and receive free resources. Childcare and lunch provided.

#3 - My house has to be perfect to have a group meet there.

Leave aside all of your worries about being the consummate host. The work of a Home Groups host is simply to make a comfortable space for people to gather. It’s as easy as swiping a Clorox wipe over the half-bath counter, checking for t.p., running the vacuum, and opening a bag of chips. Keep it simple, friend! #2 - I have to have all the answers and I don’t have everything figured out.

The role of a host is just to offer the space for gathering. Beyond that, you are a fellow group member. As long as you love Jesus, have a heart for people, and can read the discussion questions we provide, you’re good! #1 - I’m not qualified to be a spiritual leader.

You can do this. Remember—you don’t have to be an expert! You’ll be growing alongside all your Home Group members and your pastors will be praying for you. You’re never alone in this undertaking: help is only a text, email, or phone call away. Most of all, God will be with you every step of the way! You can do this and I’m committed to supporting you every step of the way—but you have to take that first step. Email me, check the box that you are interested in hosting, or find me at church and we’ll talk more about how you can be a vital part of this new thing that God is doing at MDUMC! Grace and peace, Rev. Jennifer Veres - Schrecengost ASSOCIATE PASTOR
