It’s officially summer! Time to put on your suncream (or possibly a raincoat) and make the most of everything Mid and East Antrim has to offer!

To help you along the way, we’ve put together a short guide bursting with free and lowcost fun and energetic activities for everyone to enjoy!

From live performances and cultural exhibitions to artisan markets and family fun hosted in the natural setting of our borough, there’s plenty of activities to keep you and your littles ones entertained this summer!

Our popular #MEActive Summer Scheme is also back to help the kids burn off that extra pent-up energy, whilst grownups can stay fit with our new state-ofthe-art gyms in our

3 leisure centres: Seven Towers, Ballymena, Amphitheatre, Carrickfergus and Larne Leisure Centre.

The Illyria Outdoor Theatre is set to visit Mid and East Antrim with two performances of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night this summer! Twelfth Night is a fantastic tale of romance, revenge, and mistaken identities with hilarious consequences. It could all end in tears - even if most of them are of laughter! Bring along a picnic basket and rug or low-backed seating. Hot drinks, snacks and ice cream will be available. Early booking is advised as capacity is limited. An exhibition of work that draws inspiration from the surreal and disturbing literature of Franz Kafka and George Orwell to the alien beauty of insects.    Heather McFadden originally studied 3D design at Belfast art college in the 1980’s and after graduating, specialised in Goldsmithing. She undertook further studies in Kilkenny and Copenhagen before establishing a successful Goldsmithing Business in Newtownards.

Battle of Larne: a talk by Stephen McCracken

In 1798 the Army of Ulster had over 110,000 members ready for a summer rising. Join Stephen as he takes you through an hourby-hour account of the much under reported Battle of Larne which took place in the early hours of June 1798. Travel back in time to witness the historic 1689 siege of Carrickfergus Castle by King William III, led by the Duke of Schomberg against the Jacobite Irish commanding forces. A free event boasting over 40 re-enactors dressed in period costume, followed by a pageantry parade and live cannon and musket firing. As part of European Heritage Open Days, Larne Museum is pleased to present this screen version of the show once again. Join us for an afternoon film showing of this musical, which was recorded at the 2019 performance at Carnegie Hall,

Dunfermline. A new musical from Ian Hammond Brown, the composer/lyricist of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Pitlochry Festival Theatre hit: Whisky Galore a Musical, “Carnegie - The Star-Spangled Scotchman” tells the story of Andrew Carnegie’s life, but not as you’d expect. Reimagining the Islandmagee Witches: An Interactive Exhibition

Mid and East Antrim’s MEActive team are providing a number of fun activity camps throughout the borough.

Programmes will be delivered at several venues over the summer including at our 3 Leisure Centres as well as utilising some of our outdoor facilities.

Adapted Bikes

Our adapted bikes are available to book during June, July and August in Dixon Park, Larne and Shaftesbury Park, Carrickfergus.

Larne Dixon Park 18 July, 1, 15 & 29 August, 12 & 26 September 3pm - 5pm FREE

MEActive Summer Schemes

During July and August, a number of 5-day schemes will operate in Ballymena, Carrickfergus and Larne. These schemes will operate between Monday – Friday and will be open to children aged between 6-12 years of age. Please note that the cost is per 5-day scheme and spaces are limited.

MEActive Summer Camps

This includes a number of 1 day activity camps across MEA. The programme is open to children aged between 6-12 years of age with the opportunity to avail of 2 bookable slots either a morning OR afternoon. Please note spaces are limited. Children may book into both morning and afternoon slots but must be collected by parents and returned after lunch (children will not be supervised between 12 -1pm).
