It’s easy to get obsessed with the same few barbers who dominate social media in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and no wonder as they are incredibly talented, but the reality is there’s a whole world of unique and original talent out there waiting for you to discover and be inspired by. That’s why we went to Cuba in our last issue to delve in Barber’s Alley, and it’s why we’ve taken a trip to Portugal this time for our Barbers Without Borders section examining the country’s booming barber scene. With the help of top model Francisco Cipriano, who graces our cover, we spoke with four barbershops and looked at a few of Francisco’s favourite Portuguese brands. Hopefully it gives you an incentive to look beyond the norm and see what else is out there in the world. Speaking of getting out there, this issue’s ‘Brit Abroad’ features Paul Taylor-Clinch who has been tearing it up at the infamous Schorem Barbers in Rotterdam. He’s certainly got out of his comfort zone for that role but he’s reaping the benefits! We have been encouraging barbers to tag us in their social media hair shots for our special Instagram Showcase section and it’s helped us identify some up-and-coming barbers who previously we might not have known. Tom Pipkin made our first ever Instagram Showcase
and we’re delighted to feature him now as a Rising Star – he has a bright future and it’s great that more young barbers are getting the chance to show what they can do. There’s plenty of female representation in this issue as well, with Larry the Barber Man heading to America to interview a woman who’s been taking Instagram by storm, Sofie, or as you will probably know her, StayGold31. That’s not all though, as our Barbershop of the Month is an all-woman affair! Cavalier Club in Bedford is making waves with their three female staff members proving it’s all about skill in this industry, not your sex. It’s also our biggest issue ever, by quite some margin, so there’s plenty more content for you to enjoy, and as always please contact us on social media if there’s anything you enjoyed or anything you’d love to see more of. We’ve got loads of events coming up and we hope to meet every one of you!

The NHF is hosting a prestigious awards evening in Birmingham on Sunday 19 November to celebrate the success of some of the best businesses in the industry. The NHF’s 75th Anniversary Business Awards opened on Wednesday 1 March 2017 and are free for NHF and non-members to enter at www.nhf.info/ nhfbusinessawards. Entries close 28 July 2017, so there’s still plenty of time to enter. There are nine categories available for entry, including the award for the best independent barbershop or male grooming business. Tickets to attend the event are priced at £95 (for NHF members) and £150 (for non-members). Nominees and guests attending the NHF’s 75th Anniversary Business Awards event will be welcomed with a champagne reception, before the exciting evening continues with a presentation for the winners at an awards dinner. From April 2017, more than 1.2 million small to medium-sized businesses in England will be able to choose their water and wastewater retailer. This means barbershop owners in England who pay their own water bill will be eligible to negotiate a new deal with their current water supplier, or choose a new water retailer for a better rate. The NHF has emphasised that this is free and straightforward for business owners. Visit open-water.org.uk for further information. From 1 April 2017, the NHF has warned barbershop owners of the changes that will affect those who sell alcohol to clients. Business owners will need to ensure that UK wholesalers they buy alcohol from have been approved by HMRC under the Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme (AWRS). They will need to check the wholesaler’s Unique Registration Number (URN) against the HMRC online database which will be available from April 2017.

Apprentices Photoshoot The winners of the City & Guilds Barbering Industry Boards first search for Barbering Apprentices of the Year from each of the four regions around the UK put together an amazing photoshoot based around the theme of football’s Home Internationals. It’s fantastic to be working with such promising young barbers who really do give it their all and have the ability and creativity to come up with exciting new ideas. More to Come Although there was disappointment surrounding the cancellation of Salon Expo in Scotland, we’re not letting it get our heads down and there will be plenty of opportunities for both the MHFed and City & Guilds to educate and entertain over the rest of the year. Young Feds Head to East Durham The next big event that the MHFed have lined up is the Young Feds show and CPD Course at East Durham College in May. It’s always great to team up with Alison Scattergood at the college who has taken to her role at the MHFed as Technical Ambassador with fantastic enthusiasm. We’ll be bringing a number of the Young Feds and some special guests to teach the audience some new tricks and prepare them for whatever the barbershop throws at them. We have Danny Robinson, Tariq Howes, Josh Lamonaca, Harry Green, Paul Mac, and Joey Power, all orchestrated by Joe Slaon. It’s an action packed day with two CPD classes during the day featuring one room with shaving and another with men’s hairdressing from Joe Sloan and Chris Musket will be assisted by Alison and the MHFed CEO Adam Sloan. A host of top barbers came together to put together a fantastic photoshoot for the British Master Barbers at the Golden Scissors in Dorking at the start of March.
As always, loads going on at The Hair and Barber Council, with our Key Objectives and Policy Positions gaining momentum all of the time, and being widely accepted throughout the industry.
With contributions from the likes of Phil Jarman, Sam Arthur, Dan Davies, Cheryl Broad, and Alice Theobald to name but a few of the talented people there, it’s sure to make for a fantastic shoot looking into the subcultures that defined British fashion.
If you haven’t seen them yet, they are available to view at haircouncil.org. uk. These really are the mission and benchmark of what we are all about, and as such will be at the forefront of our plans in moving the business forward.
There was also great news as our free workshop seminar being held at the Arora Hotel in Gatwick is completely sold out, with all 150 tickets being snapped up quicker than we could have imagined. The event itself is on Sunday May 14th and will see a host of highly skilled barbers offering their indepent knowledge on varied styles and techniques to help support students and the continued development in established barbers – you’re never too old to learn a new trick or two! As always we are delighted to welcome new barbers to the ranks of British Master Barbers, with Ross Carter and Dieuwertje Prins (an International Master Barber) two of the latest to receive recognition of their talent and work in the industry, while Kevin Vorley has attained the status of Grand Master Barber. We are already well underway with the planning of the next Master Barber Live Show, also being held at the Arora Hotel in Gatwick in September, which will be another day of barbering education and inspiration that connects talented barbers from across the country. You’ll be able to watch live demonstrations, compete in the live UK barber battle, explore the trade stands, and network with fellow industry names. Last year’s event was a great success and we’re expecting this year’s to be even better so now is the time to start planning if you wish to attend. You won’t regret it. If you want to join the British Master Barbers Alliance you can do so online at www.britishmasterbarbers.com.

So, what else has been going on? Well, sadly Fiona Johnston, a member of The Council and our Scottish Think Tank Chair, has had to step down from both positions. Really sad news as Fiona has been, and I am sure still will be, an extremely strong advocate of The Hair and Barber Council and has worked tirelessly on our behalf in Scotland these past 4 years. Held at The House of Commons in Westminster, will be on Monday June 12th this year, commencing at 4pm to 6pm. As you are probably aware, we are hugely restricted by The House of Commons as to how many people can attend, and as such if you would like tickets, please contact Ellie in the office in the first instance and your name will go into a ballot for as many tickets as we are able to offer to members. Tickets are £50 per person, which you will pay for only when your offer of tickets is confirmed. It’s an amazing venue for our Tea Party, and if you haven’t been to The House of Commons before, then get registered with Ellie in April, and hopefully you will be joining us at this very special event. Up until now, barbers were supplied with The Hair Council Pins, At long last, The Barber Council now have their own ‘pins’! And very smart they are too! Please contact the office, and speak with Susan if you would like one. 0208 760 7010

The BBA competitions are up and running with great feedback from Britain’s Best Shave Team. We have a record number of shortlisted barbers this year as the competition goes from strength to strength. Scotland’s First-Ever Battle of the Beards is a Sell-Out Success
Glasgow was filled with facial hair galore on February 18th, as hirsute men (and some women) travelled to the city in their hundreds to participate in Scotland’s first-ever Beard & Moustache Championships. Hosted by Scotland’s own Braw Beard Oils in collaboration with The Liverbeards and Cahonas Scotland, the sell-out event hosted 300 of Europe’s beardiest blokes and bikers, to come together and compete in this historic championship.

H
eld at Glasgow’s Drygate Brewery, the Braw Beard & Moustache Championships was held to celebrate the biggest and the best facial hair in the country, from majestic moustaches to bountiful beards, and everything in-between. Competitors came from as far afield as Germany to compete in the championships, entering categories including Best Moustache, Best Freestyle, Best Over 4”, and even Best Ginger Beard. With trophies, titles and bearded bragging rights up for grabs, it was fierce competition across the categories and some difficult decisions had to be made by the panel of expert judges. Winners on the night included Christian Feicht, a primary school teacher from Germany who took home the trophy in the ‘Best Freestyle’ category for his elaboratelycoiffed style, and also the award for ‘Furthest Travelled’ on the night, while the award for ‘Best Fake Beard’ went to Jax Easton, who rocked an incredible bouquet of bright flowers as her substitute beard.
Alongside the chin championship itself, there was plenty for winners and spectators to enjoy, including a set from Scottish rock band The King Lot, and of course, the panoramic view Such was the success of the event, that next year’s offering has already been confirmed for 24th February 2018, with some limited early-bird tickets available on the Braw Beard & Moustache Championships website. Founder of Braw Beard Oils and Championships organiser John Jackson comments, “We’ve had amazing feedback and I’m chuffed with how it’s all worked out; we knew it would be busy but to sell out is fantastic. So many people have come to support the Championships, and it’s been great to be a part of the wider bearded community. It’s been great fun and I’m also really pleased that it’s raised money for Cahonas Scotland; they’re a great Scottish charity and events like this help to get the message out.” For more information on the tournament, visit: www.thebrawbmc.com

SCOTTISH BARBER EXPO W
hen the whole barbering community in Scotland is let down at the last minute, who do they turn to? Phil Simons put together the first, but certainly not last, Scottish Barber Expo at a moment’s notice when the long planned Salon Expo fell through. With less than two weeks to find a venue and confirm some fantastic barbers, it’s safe to say that Phil, with the help of some top industry names, pulled it out of the bag. A full day of barbering education and bonding took place at St Luke’s in Glasgow on May 5th, with Sid Sottung headlining a host of recognisable talent. While the focus was, naturally, Scottish, including the team from Mohair in Glasgow, and Orbit Smoke and Barberdoo from Edinburgh, there was also an impressive appearance from the Notorious team who had travelled over from Ireland for the event and gave BarberNV editor Simon a much-needed chop on stage. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly vibe
12 | BarberNV Magazine
allowed complete newbies to the stage to feel comfortable and enjoy the moment, with some, like James Mcaulay of Urban Funk and Alan Clark of Slicks, looking destined for bigger things and much more stage experience in the future. Companies like Booksy, Yoi Scissors, Fab Hair Tonics, and Quartered Steels were supporting the event in person, while Mariner Jack and The Bluebeards Revenge had been kind enough to supply goodies and stock to giveaway and for purchase. Highlighting the camaraderie of the event, even after his opening slot, Sid Sottung stuck around to compere for future acts, using his skills as an experienced orator and sharing more knowledge with the crowd while bringing out the best of those on stage. Overall it was a positive first step in a permanent Scottish Barber Expo’s future and much credit must go to Phil Simons for stepping in to put it together. We’re already looking forward to the next one.

n the back of yet another successful Great British Barber Bash in London, founder Garry Spencer took his barbering stars on the road for a series of Barber Jam workshops around the UK. Liverpool, Glasgow, and Aberdeen were the lucky cities, and barbers and stylists packed out each venue to witness Famos and Chink showcase their skills, all the way over from Canada. The Saints Barbershop duo were in fine form as they performed two models at each location – Voodoo in Liverpool, Mohair in Glasgow, and Linton & Mac in Aberdeen. There was also a chance for the audience to ask questions about Famos and Chink’s specific cutting styles, with everyone learning something new. It was also interesting to hear the pair talk about their respective backgrounds and how they got into the craft. The Great British Barber Bash is coming to Scotland next on May 21st, returning to the the Old Fruitmarket and tickets are on sale now at greatbritishbarberbash.co.uk.

SCOTLAND’S
BEST BARBEr
PERSONAL PROFILES Finalists Following an exciting public vote, 25 of the top barbers in Scotland have been narrowed down to six finalists. Take a look at the barbers competing at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Show on April 23rd to be crowned Scotland’s Best Barber.
Vincent Quinn I started my journey into the hair industry 10-years ago. I began to learn my craft at Vidal Sassoon. Luckily they had a barbering qualification in a time where barbering was bubbling away in the dark ages and technical training of men’s hair was hard to find. Over the last few years, it’s been amazing to see resurgence among the barbering industry – where a modern take on traditional techniques has reinvented the trade. After working in a few places and building an editorial and fashion portfolio of men’s work, I came to Hard Grind to further develop my skills, especially with their speciality in technical clipper styles. It means a great deal to make it to through to the Scotland’s Best Barber 2017 live final. These competitions and events are an amazing platform for barbers to express their work and I can’t wait to showcase my hybrid, spicy cutting style on the Great British Barbering Academy stage alongside my fellow barbers. Alisha Storrie I got into barbering by chance, but have now found a passion for an industry that I love and have made barbering my career. In 2010, I completed a private barbering course and I now own my own shop. Like most working in the industry, I have had the pleasure of working from the bottom to the top, and have worked alongside many talented barbers. I picked up a lot of techniques from them that have helped me to become the stylist I am today. In August 2016, I opened my own salon, Legacy Gents Stylists. This has allowed me to employ four very talented junior stylists that are all learning the trade in the same way I did and are all progressing nicely. I am very humbled to make it to the

Scotland’s Best Barber 2017 live final, it will be a privilege just to take part. However, I will be aiming for first place as I not only want to be a great female barber, I also want to be Scotland’s Best Barber.
through to the live final of Scotland’s Best Barber 2017. I can’t wait to show the expert panel of judges why I deserve to be here when I get up on the stage with the other finalists.
Dianne Philbin
Crihan Corneliu
I started working as a junior stylist at 16 years old before finishing my level two and three qualifications in hairdressing at college. But I was converted to barbering about three years ago when I came across YouTube videos of Kieron Price and Baldy’s Barbershop. The skill involved in cutting men’s hair inspired me. I’d sit and watch the videos on repeat, before trying the cuts out on my husband and kids.
A couple of years ago, I was only cutting hair for my friends, but in 2015 I took the plunge and dedicated myself to the barbering industry. With the help of Josh Lamonaca, Alan Beak, Reece Beak, and other big names from the UK, I have now opened my own shop – Jackie’s Barbershop in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire – at the age of 26 and am finding my way in the barbering world.
This is my passion and to be in the final with one of my idols (Vincent from Hard Grind) is mind-blowing. This is just the start for me, I’m a small fish in this industry but I have plans and goals to open my own barbershop and enter more competitions.
I’m really excited to be involved in the live final of Scotland’s Best Barber 2017. I’m confident that 2017 is my year and it will be a pleasure to cut hair alongside the other finalists. I wish them all good luck!
Reaching the live final of Scotland’s Best Barber 2017 is the first tick in the box. This is my first competition and it’s given me a great confidence boost already.
I got into barbering a little over three and a half years ago after moving to Scotland from Essex. Immediately, I knew that it was the right job for me and it gave me something to pursue. I have always strived to work as hard as possible to be the best I can be. I enjoy the thrill of raising the standards and appreciation of the barbering trade in my local area and recently opened my own shop – Blackout Barbershop.
Scott Reynolds From a young age I knew I had an interest in barbering. I used to take my wet-look gel to primary school and do my classmates’ hair just for fun. I had four unconditional offers to university but I knew that it wouldn’t make me happy. I spoke to my local barber, Brian Jobson, about possibly becoming a junior stylist and I have never looked back. I am type-one diabetic and at my previous job I was very unstable and often ill. Barbering has made me a happier person, but more importantly it’s made me a healthier person. Barbering has helped me to control my diabetes, which in turn has made me and my family much happier. I’m absolutely thrilled to have made it
Ethan Stubbs
I believe that Scotland’s Best Barber is a great opportunity for barbers to get their work recognised and appreciated. To be in the final at this early point in my career is overwhelming. I am proud of all my customers for showing their belief and loyalty to get me through to the final. Brits Abroad: Netherlands Schorem Barbier. A name that inspires awe and fear in equal measure. The scumbag barbers are known for their love of a good time and a good haircut, and there’s currently only one Brit they trust to hand down their legacy – Paul Taylor-Clinch, or as he’s known in Rotterdam, Pirate Paulus.
Dreaming the dream With a dash of confidence, a whole lot of skill, and plenty of hard work, Paul has gone from hair model at his local barbershop in Cheddar, to working alongside industry legends. It’s the path so many of us want to take, but so few get the opportunity. Now he’s been on stage representing Schorem at Pro Hair Live – truly living the dream. While they have a worldwide reputation now due to their antics and, of course, the quality of their work, they weren’t always so well-known, so we ask Paul how he first discovered them. “PornHub!” He laughs, and we completely believe that’s a reasonable way to have heard about Schorem. “No, I first heard of Schorem two or three years ago while I was randomly scrolling through YouTube and instantly loved their whole way of working and their style. “I met Bertus and Leen in Manchester last February at Pro Hair Live and for most of the evening people were asking me if I was
18 | BarberNV Magazine
a Schorem guy and ‘what’s it like being in England?’ to which my reply was ‘No I’m not’ and ‘I live near Bristol!’ But now one year later I am working for them and can say ‘Yes, I am one of the Schorem guys” and I’ve cut on stage at this year’s Pro Hair Live which is fucking awesome!”
Making it a reality Naturally, joining a rag-tag band of renegades like the Schorem team isn’t quite like joining your local barbershop, and Paul’s route took him via Jacks of London and Scammels Barbershop where he learned a variety of skills and techniques to help further his talent. Then he spotted a Schorem advert written in Dutch online… “I saw the ad on Facebook (and had to use the translator on Google), so I thought it was worth an email as I had remembered on the Schorem documentary (like I said I was a huge fan and loved watching their videos) that Dan, one of the managers at Schorem, said,
“I wrote Bertus an email saying ‘I’m the guy you’re looking for.’ So I wrote to Leen to see if lightning could strike twice and ended the email with ‘I’m the guy you’re looking for.’ “I was flown out here (Rotterdam) for my interview. After the first day Lau and Janus took me out for dinner, and Janus comes up with everyone’s nicknames for the shop, and he said, ‘You’re from Bristol, right?’ and I said ‘Yeah’ so he gave me the Instagram name Pirate Paulus! So I was really hoping I got the job if he’s already giving me a name and when I was doing my hair models I had the whole team sat watching me including Rob (Bertus) and Leen who I can admit were my heroes so I was shitting myself! But when I was finished they took me to the basement for a chat and there and then gave me two weeks to move over.”
Living the dream Quite a leap for a barber from Bristol, but one it would be impossible for any of us to turn down. A chance to join the most infamous, fun-loving barbers in the world doesn’t come round very often. But did the reality live up to the expectation? Paul confirms it did. “In all honesty, it’s been amazing. I’ve made some great friends and we do laugh all day, every day. It’s hard because I don’t speak Dutch so sometimes I have absolutely no idea what is going on around me! But the guys and customers are amazing at teaching me their language and it’s just amazing how good the Dutch are at speaking English. “The team at Schorem have huge personalities so it’s always an amazing vibe in the shop and it’s basically a dream come true for me as I loved my last job in England (at Scammels) but this opportunity to live my dream was amazing and I truly love being here.”
Fitting in Huge personalities might be an understatement as far as the guys at Schorem go. With names like The Bloody Butcher, The Bearded Bastard, and Raunchy Randy the Retro Rebel, you aren’t exactly working alongside tame characters, but surely they can’t be as crazy as people say… right? Paul says: “Hmm, my first day I got picked up from the airport and taken to a studio to get naked in front of everyone to shoot the new Reuzel calendar! So of course they are, that’s why they keep us in one store to contain it! “No, I think we are all a little crazy but that’s part of the magic of the shop. Because it’s not all about the haircuts, it’s also about the stories and there is always a guy with a better story to tell.”
Learning from the best While the team are out of the ordinary and their stories are legendary, never for a moment have they let their reputation takeover – these guys are all still absolutely world class barbers and Paul is taking advantage of their skills. “I get to do the haircuts I love every day and I’m always trying to perfect my craft to keep
pushing myself,” he tells us. “All the guys in the shop have different strengths within their craft so we can all keep learning from each other. Not only that, but it is truly amazing that I get to have extra training with Bertus and it’s great how he shares his knowledge and really is a great friend and boss. He always pushes me to better myself and further my knowledge of the trade I love.”
Enjoying the moment That thing you’re feeling is jealousy. So let’s make it a bit worse by hearing from Paul about the highlight of his time in Rotterdam. “The whole experience is a highlight. There are so many things I never thought I would do in this industry and to have achieved some of them already is amazing like having a proper photo shoot of my work with the very talented Jelle Mollema, working on stage, and doing a video shoot for Rezuel. Schorem has already given me so much and I’m just living the dream to be honest and looking forward to what the future holds.” With everything going so well for Paul, it seems almost impossible to top his current job, and he admits he’s not spending any time worrying about the future. “If I’m honest I’m not really thinking too far ahead, I’m loving right now. I’d love to eventually travel with Rob and Leen to all the amazing countries they visit I’d love to teach in The Old School, Schorem’s barbering academy, and one day I’d love to open my own shop back in England, but I’m just loving right now and living my dream.” He finishes with some real Schorem advice: “As Rob said, ‘dream big because you never know, it might come true’ and my dream has.”

It promised “one day of pure goddamn rock ’n’ roll” and, well, it certainly achieved that. 3,000 music fans, 20 bands, three stages, three tattoo studios, and one barbershop, all on one submarine wharf on Rotterdam’s waterfront. It proved to be the perfect setting for the annual craziness. The fourth iteration of the Schorem barbershop
crew’s rock ’n’ roll festival, saw headliners Zeke, Batmobile, and Stiff Little Fingers, plus 17 other rockabilly, punk, metal, and rock bands raising the roof on this annual celebration of musical carnage. In the midst of it all were Schorem’s Bertus and Leen, looking slightly worse for wear but very proud of another awesome festival of music and mayhem.

Forget The Chick-ery, This Barber Is The Real Deal

W
hen I caught up with Sofie at the International Beauty Show, it was hot off the baAck of her having won BarberCon’s best female barber of the year award – a coveted prize which shows you the calibre of barber that we’re dealing with. Almost every barber has a fight on their hands if they want to make it to the top, but as a minority within the industry, female barbers often find that this struggle is amplified. I’ve met a lot of formidable women barbers, each one with their own fascinating story to tell, and I’m always delighted to share their stories with you here. So without further ado, let’s get to know Sofie. Barbering: Something that makes you want to wake up in the morning Sofie started as a hairdresser, but decided to transition into barbering after she found that hairdressing just wasn’t sparking the excitement and creativity that she looks for in a career. I’ve heard similar stories before from both male and female barbers, and I wanted to know more about how the transition happened and what made her jump from one side of the hair styling industry to the other: “I started doing hair about seven years ago: the first year I got into cosmetology, and going through that first year was a little bit tough because I couldn’t find that feeling where you’re just excited to get
22 | BarberNV Magazine
up every day, go to work, and have a good time. So, the second year I thought ‘before I give it all up, let me try men’s hair and see how that works.’ I jumped into a barbershop, and it was probably one of the most uncomfortable and intimidating moves I’ve done, working by myself as a female, with all guys who had way more experience than I have. Pretty soon after that it developed into a passion where it was challenging, it was fast-paced and it made me want to go to work and keep learning. And my main focus was just to do what I could and try to make it work – because it was fun and I enjoyed it”. With that kind of work ethic, Sofie winning the best female barber award won’t have come as a surprise to many of you - it’s clear that she deserves the recognition. For her though, it was a total shock, not least because she had only gone to showcase her work. So how did it feel to suddenly be told she’d won a huge barbering prize? “I was completely speechless. To be recognised after all these years of knowing how hard it is first of all to be a barber, but then to be a female which made it extremely difficult in the beginning”. I also asked her whether she had a theory as to why she’d won, and she told me that what she puts out is very real, never sugar-coating anything, and focusing on connecting with others who are still learning and giving them advice, providing inspirational content and the energy to keep going. Of course, aside from giving a lot back to the barbering community and helping others, Sofie also crafts exceptional haircuts. “That’s the plus side, because you have to! We are the minority of this entire industry in just the barbering world alone, so we’ve got to cut twice as hard. That helped me separate myself from everyone else”. The rise of female barbers So, while seeing a woman cutting hair on the barbershop floor used to be a rare occurrence, it’s becoming a lot more common, with the growth of the industry making room for a very welcome increase in diversity: “Now I’m seeing that growth in a lot of States where women are not
being afraid anymore, and they’re coming into this world and trying to hold their own. It’s starting to change where people aren’t just saying ‘oh, you’re good for a girl’ – no, you’re good, period. And that’s what it should be, it shouldn’t be segregated… ‘you’re okay for a chick’. But it’s those little things that have pushed me to where I am now; you’ve got to find those moments that drive you even further.” Within Sofie’s own career, she’s found a lot of different ways to help people find that drive to move forward, including a YouTube channel featuring educational how to videos: “I think it’s important to show people that you’re not just taking shortcuts and making it look nice. I represent BaByliss for barbers, and it’s important for me to show that I’m actually using these tools to do things. People want to feel like it’s real and attainable. I want to break it down and make it easy, because I know what it’s like to just be handed a pair of clippers and not really know the specs or what is out there. I break down toll knowledge because I think it’s important for us to understand why we’re using it so
BarberNV Magazine | 23
we can do it better.” Most of these videos can be found on Sofie’s Instagram staygold31, where every barber should be following her work! Alongside inspirational posts, you’ll find information about the BaByliss brand that she’s an ambassador for. I know that picking up a great ambassador role is a big dream for many barbers, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find out how Sofie landed the job: “A lot of companies are looking for people who can already sell themselves. The first four or five years I’ve just built my page off of things that I enjoy. You have to find what’s pure to you and that’s how you’re going to build an audience, because people want to follow real people. BaByliss are looking for people who can already promote themselves. People were sceptical at the time – I was sceptical – but I took the risk and I’m so glad I did.” BaByliss have certainly grown into a very credible brand over the past few years, and it’s great that we’re starting to see barbers embrace another set of tools -after all, the more diversity there is in your clipper collection, the more opportunities you have to provide different styles. For Sofie, this had meant taking an educational role, getting up on stage and showing what these clippers can do. The final element to Sofie’s work is building her personal brand, with a range of Stay Gold pins for barbers to wear on their aprons. If you want to support her work then you can check these out on Instagram, although she also has a brand new website coming soon. She’s also been focusing on taking great photos in order to better promote herself: “It came with cutting hair. I used to use an iPhone, but with higher quality photography you can not only put your work out there better, but also study your haircuts a little more, see the details. Different camera settings, new things that you can do. Overall, create a better portfolio for yourself, and I think that’s really important as well as your presentation. You know you could be a good barber but if you don’t have good presentation how are you going to get clientele, build business opportunities. People will notice the little details, it separates pages apart because of the quality that you invest in yourself.” Reflecting on the industry Before I let Sofie shoot off and get back on stage, I have one final question to ask: what she thinks of the state of the industry today. Getting a professional barber’s insight on the industry today is always informative since things have changed so much in recent years. With that in mind, and to embrace the positive
24 | BarberNV Magazine
spirit of the International Beauty Show I asked Sofie what she loves about the industry: “How much men’s hair has grown. Because a little while ago men weren’t into their hair as much, but that stigma for men who want to get their eyebrows done, that’s gone. Now men want to look better and feel better. Men are getting their hair cut three or four times as much as women now, so the industry is coming up to the same point as female hairdressing.” Thanks for taking the time to get to know another wonderful up and coming barbering – young barbers like Sofie bring so much energy and enthusiasm to the career that we all have something to learn from them! Don’t forget to find her on Instagram as StayGold31. While you’re there, you can also follow me - larrythebarberman - and then head on over to my YouTube channel at barbers.tv. In the meantime, happy clipping and I look forward to bringing you more barber profiles soon.

Cavalier Club: Who runs the world? Girls!

came to male grooming.
Cavalier Club in Bedford is the passion project of Siobhan Richardson and her sister Emma. Not the girliest of girls (Siobhan left hairdressing as “spending two hours with the same woman complaining about her husband and bread maker filled me with dread”) they’ve established a barbershop where men feel just as at home as any of the ‘men only’ shops around the country. Free beer, live music gigs, everyone can enjoy Cavalier and that’s why it has been taken to the heart of the community – well, that and the undisputable talent of the staff.
“Aesthetically our shop stands out as we have taken aspects from the traditional barbershop look mixed with tattoo culture. The wall our stations are on was bare but is quickly filling with paintings, drawing, and any other things our clients make us so they are a part of the creation of the shop. Someone said our shop inspires creativity and that was an amazing compliment.
Prophet to Profit You could say that the opening of Cavalier Club was written in the stars. Siobhan spotted the empty unit, but an encouraging card reading at a spiritual group gave her the push she needed to take the risk. “Within less than two months from standing daydreaming, I was in it, up and running,” she says. After the initial plunge it was all about getting the shop right and Siobhan says she felt “Bedford was ready for something new when it

“Our shop is a really relaxed environment. We make sure everyone who walks in the door becomes our friend – we are just working class girls with no idea how to be false or pretentious and I think our clients love that about the place.
“I think our shop is an environment where people really don’t mind sitting and waiting. It’s big, we have huge windows so it’s light. We make an effort to engage everyone in our conversations, I don’t think there is a better feeling than when customers that don’t know each other are all chatting and having a laugh. It doesn’t matter if you are rich, poor, old, young, whatever, we will treat you the same and make you part of the club.” Joining the Club Siobhan says that everyone is welcome at Cavalier Club and it’s not just a platitude, with people from all walks of life calling the shop home.
She tells us: “We attract people from every class which I love because I would hate for anyone to feel they coouldn’t come in and experience a haircut with us. We attract a lot of the LGBT community and they have commented that it’s so nice to come into somewhere they feel accepted as it can be quite a daunting experience for them going into a barbershop environment. “Word is getting around that we are good at Afro Caribbean hair so we are starting to attract more of that which we are loving. We get a lot of business men who go for it because they like the look of the shop, but then we appeal to alternative tattooed people. We really are blessed to have a shop for everyone.” Heart of the community As modest as she is talented, Siobhan doesn’t wish to go into too much detail about the community work that Cavalier Club engage in, but helping local homeless people and cutting hair at the nearby children’s home and a home for people with autism explains why the people of Bedford are so proud to have them. The Cavaliers From the start, Siobhan has worked alongside her “sister and best friend” Emma. And as the bigger sister, Siobhan couldn’t be prouder of how Emma’s ability has flourished while working at Cavalier Club.
Siobhan says: “We followed the same path regarding training in ladies but she completed college after I left. I kept saying ‘try barbering’ until eventually she did. She has turned out to be one of the most passionate barbers I know, constantly watching videos, learning and improving. You only have to look at her standard of work to know that she has such a talent. She has lacked in confidence in the past and is very self-critical of her work which I think is starting to subside and I’m seeing her believing in her ability which has been amazing as her work colleague but even beautiful to watch as her big sister. She has her own unique style and the finish of her haircuts are just another level. She works so hard for Cavalier Club and it really wouldn’t be what it is without her.” With business booming, Fern Cousins joined Cavalier Club as their third barber. Siobhan was always confident that Fern would join the Club before she even asked for a job.

“She had the look for the shop and looking at her work I knew she would fit in,” Siobhan says. “She started off her career doing ladies and it shows in her scissor cutting and blow-drying techniques that I often admire from my chair. “Since joining us her development as a barber has been fantastic and watching her confidence grow within our team has been a pleasure. She also needs an extra shout out for being able to put up with Emma and myself every day and not going crazy!” Girl power Three female barbers in the one shop is fairly out of the ordinary but the people of Bedford seem to have embraced it, with none of the issues we often hear about regarding male customers not quite getting that women are just as competent as men. Siobhan says: “I can honestly say apart from the odd apprehensive man who had cautiously mentioned a woman had never cut their hair before or something along those lines we have never come up against it. To be honest our shop has the biggest window front and you can see everything so if you are going to walk into our shop after seeing only women and have something to say you would have to be pretty brave! We have had nothing but support and kind words.” Indeed the women appear to be taking over barbering, and Siobhan is delighted to see how far they’ve come, saying “it’s amazing to watch all the other females within the industry and how much of a sisterhood we are. “There is nothing but support and female empowerment among us which we feel helps to motivate and inspire one another. The standard of work coming out of the ladies of the industry is insane and so exciting – watch out men, the women are coming!” BarberNV thinks they are already here, and we can’t wait to see what more they produce in the future.

PORTUGAL Welcome to our inside look at Portuguese barbering In Britain, what do we think of when we hear about Portugal? Cristiano Ronaldo? Nando’s? Holidays on the Algarve? Well that might all be about to change, as a burgeoning barber community begins stretching their scissor arms and showcasing skills to make them stand out on the world stage. Gone are the days of ₏ 5 haircuts at a butcher barber, Portuguese men are embracing quality cuts and oldschool style, and a new generation of barbers has appeared to service them. Inspired by the likes of Schorem and taking cues from barbers on social media around the world, the Portuguese barbering scene is making a name for itself and so BarberNV went to investigate. Enlisting the help of top model Francisco Cipriano, we spoke with a variety of top barbershops in his home country, and particularly Lisbon, about their work and the industry as a whole, and got the lowdown on some of Portugal’s top barbering brands, with Francisco giving us his personal product recommendations. T
raditionalism in the ‘temple’. Figaro’s is one of the most renowned and well-respected barbershops in Portugal, specialising solely in classic cuts from the 1920s to 50s and gaining a worldwide reputation in the process.
Designed to recreate the look and feel of an old American barbershop, the first Figaro’s opened nearly three years ago to try and invigorate a Portuguese barber scene that owner Fabio Marques felt was severely lacking. Now if you’re looking for a pompadour, slick back look, or psycho quiff, the chances are Figaro’s is where you want to go, instantly travelling back in time as soon as you enter the shop. The success of their original shop means Figaro’s is now expanding and a second location, Figaro’s Barbershop – Downtown, has established the brand as a real Portuguese powerhouse. There’s no chance of them walking away from their principles though and customers can still expect the same old school, traditional cuts they’ve always received at Figaro’s. A poster on the wall identifies what haircuts will be provided, and if you want something else? Well, just like women, you can go elsewhere.

hile it’s becoming more and more common to have a beer while you’re in your local barbershop, it’s much rarer to have a haircut while you’re in your local bar… But proprietor Nuno Mendes tells us that’s how O Purista, The Purist, began back in April 2014. “O Purista started as a pop-up store for the presentation of a Belgian beer, Affligen, in Portugal,” he explains. “The concept was to create an experience around the tasting of this new kind of beer to the Portuguese consumer. The whole shop was designed and built to last for a month almost three years ago. That’s why O Purista is a bar and a barbershop – the idea was to have people tasting the beer and having a haircut or a shave at the same time.” Obviously it caught the imagination of the Lisbon public and they’ve continued cutting hair and serving beer to this day, letting men be men in a relaxed environment. Nuno says: “The inspiration was the gentlemen’s clubs. The place where men could have their hedonistic getaway with drinks, comfortable furniture, pool table, books, and a barbershop. We had to make some modifications along the way but the inspiration has always been the same and the style and feel hasn’t changed.” Offering traditional, classic cuts in a place

men want to come has proven to be extremely popular in Portugal, as they’ve slowly started to reclaim the barbering trade from the unisex salons that cropped up in the 90s and 00s. “Most old fashioned barbers were older persons located in smaller cities, villages, or on the outskirts,” Nuno explains. “In the last three of four years, a younger generation of barbers have appeared and gained a notorious importance in the masculine social life. The beards, moustaches, and old school style haircuts came back into fashion, men started coming back and rediscovering the pleasure of going to the barbershop as it provides a very different service. “Nowadays barbering is seen as a trendy craft thanks to this new generation of professionals that appeared and are changing the idea of the old barber in a small and simple shop. All kinds of concepts are opening all over with the barbershop association – tattoo parlours, cafes, barbs, etc.” While it was originally inspired by the Affligem beer it was created to sell, when creating O Purist, Nuno couldn’t help but hark back to the barber he went to all his life and that feeling of belonging. He says: “He has a small shop in a place 20km outside of Lisbon and it is where all the men in my family went to cut their hair since my great
grandfather. I always felt at home in that small place and that’s what I wanted my customers to feel as they entered O Purista.” For Nuno and O Purista the future is bright, and he believes his country will long be feeling the benefits of the barbering boom. “I think that as it’s now the fashionable craft of the moment it will continue to grow for some time. But as with everything else that has an explosion like we have had in Portugal it will reach a peak of growth and start to adjust to the demand. “But one thing I’m sure of, it will not come to what it was five or six years ago when it was almost a forgotten art.”

For the cover we chose Francisco Cipriano. Senior model from Central Models in Lisbon, Francisco is 47 years old. Known for his silver fox look, with a powerful white beard, and exquisite gentleman appearance. His mature white beard is frequently attractive to national and international photography projects. In our shoot, Francisco wears a modern vintage look, inspired by Portuguese motifs, and in the City of Lisbon. Starting, we have the tiles motif (called azulejos) in the shirt. Tiles are everywhere in Portugal. They decorate everything from walls of churches and monasteries, to palaces, ordinary houses, park seats, fountains, shops, and even railway stations. Tiles are classic elements, always present, and still very modern and sophisticated. For the clothes, we put together a green jacket and a red scarf inspired by the Portuguese flag, but in smooth gentle colors. Then, we underlined Lisbon’s colorful atmosphere with a flower in the lapel. Lisbon is a city full of authenticity where old customs and ancient history intermix in a perfect match to create contemporary classical style. This cover really represents the spirit of the city: vintage, classical, and contemporary, just as it represents Francisco’s personality.

The Portuguese Touch
Barberhood Barberhood is an experience as much as a barbershop. Currently located inside motorcycle dealership/tattoo parlour, Ink & Wheels, it’s the first venture from Salvador Rodrigues and takes its inspiration from rock ‘n’ roll culture and everything that goes with it. Its success was instantaneous and Salvador has since brought in his good friend, and fellow Master Barber, João Vidigal to deal with the demand. Now, 18 months after opening and with three apprentices under them, they are turning Barberhood into a high-end shop with all the comforts of a friendly hangout. “The style and feel of Barberhood is totally inspired by the classics but mixed with a modern vibe,” says Salvador. “We love classic cuts and all the vibe around the 1920-1950s. We are into motorcycles, surfing, rock ‘n’ roll, and tattoos. Everything around radical sports and music is part of our roots and it’s reflected in our store. At the same time we live in 2017 and we gotta keep our store modern and up-to-date in the digital era. “Barberhood was always presented as a space for men, where there’s no prejudices or taboos. It’s a place for socialization, focused on men’s care with high quality services. This is something that kept growing since the first day we opened the shop. It’s pretty common to see clients coming in, grabbing a beer, and having a quick chat with everyone. It’s a place for networking and to relax and have a good time. Ah, and obviously we have beers, Jameson Whisky, coffee and many others drinks to make our clients feel at home!” 48 || SalonNV BarberNVMagazine Magazine
Naturally, clients at Barberhood tend to go for more traditional styles but Salvador is keen to stress that his team can offer whatever will suit the customer best. “It all depends of the client’s needs and preference, and we have the knowledge and skill to apply it on the client’s hair. We usually try to give our insight and show to the client which is the best style to suit his countenance. This is an art and there’s no right or wrong. “One of the famous things we do here it’s the hot towel shave and that’s something that we really keep as a classic. Our clients come here to have a good shave and a good time. The hot towel shave is also becoming more than a simple shave. It has a spa/relaxing component added to it and it’s pretty cool to see our clients coming here to chill and relax.” With the scene blossoming in Portugal like never before, Barberhood are at the forefront of the barbering wave but they aren’t losing sight of where they came from. Salvador tells us: “Barbering had a big boom in Lisbon and became a little bit mainstream. In my opinion that’s something that is part of the process and it’s good for the industry. It boosts development and growth,

producing better barbers for this industry. Basically, everybody can grow, there’s still lots of space for all the barbers around here and we can still learn a lot from each other. “Even considering barbering has become a little bit mainstream and maybe a little bit dishonest, I know there’s lots of business that kept their roots along the time.” Drawing on the work and talent of others is part of what has made Salvador the talented barber he is today and he says that a man who has featured in BarberNV several times is a big inspiration to him – “the legendary Donnie Hawley. “I always admired him because of his traditional barbering style and all the vibe around his shop, especially the old-school scenario. Most importantly, my other inspirations are the Master Barbers who taught me. I had three teachers, two of them focused on the old style, in this case António Pinto and Aníbal Bentes, and another one on the new school, Sérgio Pinto. I’m sure this profession is a matter of love and most importantly, teaching others, it’s a craft that goes from generation to generation and I’m willing to keep this tradition and teach others interested in it.” www.SalonNV.co.uk BarberNV Magazine || 49
Barbearia O Corvo Rua da Assunção nº42, 1º Andar, Sala 6 Lisboa
Passion is the lifeblood of barbering and Paulo, owner of Barbearia O Corvo, which translates to The Crow, has it in spades. Giving up on his degree and a lucrative career in engineering, Paulo chose to go from cutting hair in his garage as a hobby and make an attempt at turning it into his career. That was three years ago and after gaining experience in barbershops around the city, last year Paulo opened Barbearia O Corvo, now a shining light in Lisbon’s barbering community. Paulo says the design of the store has “a big influence from the oldschool barbershops from the United States and a punk/rock vibe” which he won’t change just because of trends and fashions, instead sticking to what he likes. That love of tradition is shared by his customers, Paulo says “90% of them go with traditional classic looks, short and clean haircuts like pompadours and fades.” It’s no surprise then that he counts Schorem Barbiere among his inspirations, but there’s a number of barbers from the UK and Ireland who he looks up to. “I think that Simon Harvey (from Rebel Rebel) is one of the best in

the world at doing classic haircuts. I recognise that Frank Rimer (@ Frank_Glorified) did an excellent job promoting himself on social media and Johnny Baba is a good example of a successful business in this hairstyle industry. “From around the world I’ll have to say Donnie Hawley, Shane Nesbitt, and Vince the Barber. There’s also a few awesome barbers in Asia. I think I admire the work of many barbers from all over the world.” The similarities between Portuguese barbering and British barbering don’t end with the influences and styles, with Paulo saying there has been an influx of low quality barbers trying to take advantage of the recent rise in popularity. But he is still optimistic about the future of barbering in his country. “It’s complicated because there’s those who follow trends and just want to be barbers ‘because it’s cool’ and there’s those who really live this and are doing this way before the social media thing. I think in the future there will be less shops but those shops will offer a higher quality service.”

Editor’s Comment We asked our cover star, and Portuguese barbering encyclopedia, Francisco Cipriano to tell us about his favourite brands from his homeland and pick some of their standout products. If you want to offer your clients something unique, this is a good place to start.
Barba Brada Barba Brada is a Portuguese brand, maybe one of the first ones. Bruno Nascimento and Tasha are the owners and the mentors of this brand. The collection of oils features 4 different aromas that correspond to 4 different profiles. They are Wild Woods (woodsy and classic), The Original (smooth and clean), Citrus Fall (warm and sweet), and Tejo (fresh and urban). We went against the hype and decided to have less, but higher quality ingredients in our beard oils. The result is a blend that has a high hydrating power without a greasy feeling to the touch after it is applied. My favorite fragrance is Wild Woods. Apart from the beard oils, my favorite product from Barba Brada is Wild Woods Beard Wax. When you need more conditioning power for your beard, the Barba Brada beard wax is ideal. They call it a balm on steroids. Not only does it condition and soften your beard, it also gives it a medium hold, while being easy to apply and wash off. Since we only use high quality natural ingredients.
barbabrada.com
Papillon - London Cosmetic for men They have all the products for barbers and barbershops. I love the Serum Beard and Skin for moisturising and treatment of your beard and skin. A non-greasy and easily absorbed serum with high quality botanical extracts. Moisturises and protects your beard, penetrates the beard fiber to make it healthier and even. We can apply it as a cream and it will moisturise your skin leaving it very soft and not greasy. I also use the Pure Mint Shampoo for hair and beard daily, with a refreshing and invigorating formula with aroma of menthol and mint. It moisturizes the hair and skin and contains vitamin E to maintain the moisture level of the skin for hair or beard. The original fragrance is invigorating. papillonmen.com
Antiga Barbearia de Bairro With Antiga Barbearia de Bairro we get into another concept. An invitation to close your eyes, feel the fragrance, and get into the old neighborhoods, with their little shops, old streets and classic architecture, always full of life and amusement. Those Portuguese districts where gentlemen wore their top hats and dressed impeccably to go out. Where barbershops used a badger brush, a razor, and shaving cream. Where men talked for hours at the husky sound of an old device, with no hurry at all. This is the spirit of this brand, the one we wish to revive and perpetuate because fortunately, nowadays, a lot of this way of life still exists. Amongst all the products for barbers and barbershops, I select the shaving soap – the star of Antiga Barbearia de Bairro - since its first minute now with a luxury presentation as it deserves: New aluminum lid and corrugated cardboard box with black designs along with dry soap and voluminous foam with moisturising properties. They also develop this old fashioned straight razor ‘shavette’, inspired in the old barber style. Keeping the brand’s philosophy of reviving the traditional shave, a partnership with Ivo Cutelarias was a perfect match, embracing the challenge of creating this magnificent piece. No doubt about it, it’s the most iconic object of the traditional shaving, and although its concept goes back to the old days, its modern disposable blade head makes it rather unique. Elegantly presented inside a metal tin.

BARBER SHOPS OF AMERICA
A project three years in the making. The result? An incredible insight into the breadth of barbering across the United States of America. This one-of-a-kind book chronicles an ever-diminishing era in our industry, but one that will now live on forever thanks to photographer Rob Hammer’s project. He told us about his journey to bring Barber Shops of America from dream to reality. What inspired you to travel around all 50 states taking pictures of barbershops? Barbershops have always been something I’m interested in. They are just great places for men to hang out and shoot the shit, relax, and maybe drink a beer. As I got older and began traveling, I noticed that real barbershops were starting to disappear. Barbers were passing away, retiring, or being kicked out of their shops to be replaced by higher paying tenants. This was really sad to me because these old authentic shops are such an amazing piece of American history - which, at some point will be gone forever. And I thought they deserved to be documented before that happens. Nowadays, barbershops are a dime a dozen. Most of them don’t have any character, nor do the barbers have any pride. So many of the modern shops feel soulless. How did you go about planning it? Initially, I was just shooting shops around San Diego (where I live). Then expanded a little to Southern California. And as time went on,
56 | SalonNV Magazine
my interest in the project grew and grew. So I branched out more to Arizona and New Mexico. Every time I shot another shop, it made me want to go further and further. Eventually, I knew it had to visit shops in all 50 states. So I researched a few places, but wasn’t happy each time I arrived at each of those shops. And realized that what I was looking for, was off the grid. In the not so travelled parts of the country. So I hit the road (with my dog, Mojo) and tried to stay off the highways as much as possible. Visiting small towns, where I was able to find all these old shops. There really wasn’t much planning. It was mostly just a lot of time spend on the road, in search of these small towns. How did barbers react to your request to photograph their shop? The reactions were mixed. Some barbers couldn’t have been happier about it. Some didn’t understand it. Some didn’t want anything to do with it. One of the great things about barbershops, is that there are other
things going on behind the scenes. Things that might not be legal. So when a person walks in wanting to take pictures, the owners can get a little sketched out. In ‘the south’, a lot of pockets are very poor and predominantly African American. So they were quite sceptical of a 6’5” white guy walking in claiming to be a photographer traveling the country to photograph barbershops. I get it. For the most part though, barbers were very open to it. I don’t think they really understood, or believed that I was actually going to document shops in all 50 states, then publish a book. But they were open to it. Overall it was a very positive experience. One of the best of my life. Did you find a great deal of difference between the shops in different states? Yes. America is a massive and diverse place. Every state is very different, and people are extremely proud of those differences, which is reflected in the shops. For instance, in New York, there is a lot of pride in sports. So you’re likely to see walls covered in Yankee memorabilia. In the more ‘country’ states like Montana, people hunt. So the walls of a shop will most likely be covered in hunting trophies. The shops are a direct reflection of the barber, his customers, and the activities they enjoy. Can you pick a favourite of the shops you visited, and why? That’s really hard. Each shop that I chose to shoot was amazing and unique in some way. There was something I loved about all of them. If you made me pick, I’d have to say Honest John’s Barbershop in Burlington, Kansas. Which is a combination of liking the shop and the barber himself. John was a great guy. One of those old timers that instantly puts a smile on your face, and makes you feel better for having met him. He had been barbering his whole life
in that shop, in that tiny town, in the middle of the country. And he loved it. In different ways, I’ve stayed in touch with John since then. And unfortunately, he passed away recently. R.I.P. Three years is a long time to spend on a project, what was your best memory from the journey? That’s also really hard to answer. I loved everything about the project. Every piece was fun, but the journey as a whole is what I think makes it really special. Seeing all the unseen parts of America. Meeting the barbers. Hearing their stories. And the food was a big part. Eating my way across the country was great. Did you learn anything about barbershops or their owners that surprised you? Not sure how to answer that. Every time you speak with a stranger from a different part of the country, it’s an opportunity to learn something new. So I certainly learned a great deal about people and the way they life their life, which is much different from mine. Any plans to shoot any barbershops in the UK in the future? I love the UK, and have been there a couple times. Every time I go back, I love it more and more. You guys have a great outlook on life, and something about your accents makes you oddly trustworthy. I laugh about that all the time. Anyway, the short answer is yes. Right now I’m getting ready to start this project again. This time focusing on the next generation of authentic shops on the west coast of America, while still shooting older shops along the way. So I’ll be doing another book on that. Longer term, I’d like to photograph old barbershops all over the world. Stay tuned. And if you have any recommendation on some great old shops in the UK, I’m all ears.

ASK ALAN? The mailbox has been swamped this issue so unfortunately we can’t publish them all but here are a few of the best ones. J Roberts22 asked: I have one successful barbershop already, when do I know I’m ready to open a second? Do you have any advice? AF: Well done you in getting to this position! Opening shop number two obviously means you can’t be in two places at the same time and having the right staff is going to be key. So the timing of opening shop number two would be best served when you have all the staff in place who can take on some of the responsibility of managing the day to day running of your business. You can’t do everything, so identification of, and delegation of, roles and duties will be crucial. Keeping the standards which made you successful in shop one need to be achieved and maintained in both shops to ensure continued success. Helen Stevens asked: Do you have any tips for dealing with Afro hair? I only have one client like this so don’t get to practice very often. AF: When I’m working with afro hair whether it’s very short or with length I’ll always use an afro or big wide toothed comb and spend some time teasing at the roots through to the ends to relax the tension of the tight curls. This will loosen the overall shape of the style and prepare it to be reshaped. If you’re fading or tight tapering, check the growth patterns of the hair around the area where you’re using clippers for those crazy hairlines and growth patterns that can affect the shading and fading. When cutting the top I like to work freehand and sculpt my shape with clippers and scissors. Ruaraidh Brown asked: I see scissors going from £100 to £1,000 – are the expensive ones really that big an improvement? AF: I would say when you’re first starting out don’t spend too much (£100 max) as while your training you’re going to drop them a lot and they will take a bit of a beating cutting training dolls. The price of scissors generally goes up with the quality of steel being used. Better quality steel means you will keep your sharp edge longer. I use the Hunt & Hustle brand at the moment, specifically the ‘Ace of Spades’ model over the last eight months and found it to be a great all round barber scissor with the perfect balance for me and at around £250 is fantastic value for money. It’s a personal choice really and a lot of the really expensive designs out there won’t be that much better, if any at all, than a good £200+ pair. Jonesysbarbers asked: What can I do to make my barbershop stand out from the other three on the same street? AF: People talk especially in small towns so use it to your advantage: customers will recommend your staff and shop to friends and family if they have a good experience. It takes a bit of time to build a good reputation and with that you will slowly begin to see more clients through the door. Building a good reputation starts with the boss/owner and is more than just your cutting skills. You’ll need to insist that EVERY client that walks through your doors is treated with respect, humility, and their WANTS are listened to. I think this mantra applies to your staff also and in gaining the respect of your team along with that of your clients you will be creating an environment that’s great to work in and brings clients in their droves. A win-win situation. Sam Matthews asked: I’d like to put my staff on a training course to up their skills to the next level. Are there any you would recommend or is there anything I should look out for when choosing? AF: Well Sam, these days there are gazillions of courses out there ranging from day workshops to fully certified barber qualifications. Choosing the right course can be a bit of a mine field and gaining value for money is good business practice where the money you spend transfers to new skills and confidence from your staff. Many of the top barbers in the UK have their own courses where they will come to your shop and train your staff for the day or days. I offer this service myself with Rebel Rebel and our newly formed artistic team ‘The RAT Pack’ and provide it also with my other artistic team The B.O.M.B Squad. Other organisations/artists out there offering courses are The MHFeds, Great British Barber Bash, MK, the Beak brothers, Chris Foster, Tom Chapman and Sid Sottung to name but a few. I suppose you should ask your staff who inspires them most and book a course that includes hands on working on live models. I thought we had a good mix of quality questions there from the readers and hopefully I’ve given answers that can help them on their way to better barbering. We’ve taken up so much space answering them I’ll have to finish off with just a few thoughts I’ve been having lately. With each era of fashion that has passed we’ve seen dramatic changes of hair/clothes styles influenced by music and culture, each decade seemingly claiming its own style identity. I feel the current hairstyles and looks that are in vogue now have been about forever and I am looking forward to the change in the status quo. As we draw closer the end of this decade I think it’s fair to assume there will big fashion changes with this current era being remembered for the birth of the hipster beard and uber cool fades like the bald faded pomp or the blurry faded side parting with large boxed beard. I’m sure for some of the younger barbers out there this is all you know, but nothing stays the same and from a professional point of view it’s about making sure that your skills are future proof and you are prepared to learn new ways of cutting the new styles when they come. Thanks for reading and to all the lovely readers who wrote in and we will catch you next issue keep your questions coming and if you can leave along with your name, the city/town where you do your barbering. Be the best you can be!

Stay Ahead by keeping the training fresh By Sue Whitehead, MD of Jacks of London
I
n the fast and competitive world of barbering, education too often gets relegated to bottom of the must-do list. But with 2017’s trend for longer hair presenting a real challenge to some barbers, keeping up with new techniques has become essential. Those behind the chair need the confidence, knowledge, and creativity to lead every client on a journey, evolving his style with every visit, so he never becomes jaded with his hair or his barber. It’s the only way to guarantee a loyal clientele. But dodging that three-cut-wonder label that besets some barbers requires solid confidence, only really possible if there is a commitment to learning. Stepping away from the chair and into the classroom is crucial, allowing scope to explore new trends and force every barber out of the dreaded comfort zone. But for busy, experienced barbers, it needs to be an exciting form of education, rather than the same-old, sameold. One option is to emulate the manufacturers and big industry names by focusing on a collection. At Jacks of London we not only involve the art teams from each of our stores in developing our annual collections, we also use the most recent as a teaching tool to our own teams and new recruits and in our Jacks of London Academy. The benefits of focusing on particular styles and using them as a springboard to new techniques and trends are far-reaching. It’s inspiring and motivating for everyone involved. It impels you to update your approach and develop new ways of cutting or colouring. It makes you think about future trends and how you can translate them for your clients.
62 | BarberNV Magazine
One of the most interesting courses at our Jacks of London Academy in Guildford – Stay Ahead – uses our collections to deliver this sort of education. Aimed at those with experience, Stay Ahead is for barbers determined to avoid falling into a rut. It is flexible, so if attendees want to focus on advancing the classics or discuss the A-to-Z of doing a collection from inception through to choosing the photographer, we can, but focusing on our collection and the latest trends guarantees that the course is never stagnant or dull. The techniques are clearly bang up to date and ahead of the curve. Colours are as important as the styling. Pushing boundaries through education, especially on those courses where the content changes year on year, so the educators do not become stagnant and tired,
is essential to sustaining the best delivery for clients. But it also helps the barber, keeping him fresh, interested, inspired and confident in what he does. We have pushed our own boundaries and leaped out of our own comfort zone to produce our collection, so taking others through the process is as exciting for us as it is for those on the course. We have developed new techniques, created new colour palettes and even produced products to help us realise our vision, so we know from experience what an amazing journey learning can be when the focus is constantly updated. And, crucially, we have transferred those trends to the store floor, where our classic client – the modern gent – is queuing up for a supremely well-executed and bang up to date new look. www.jacksoflondonacademy.co.uk

BarberSociety Live
The pre-eminent event for barbers returns to Amsterdam with another show that allows industry professionals from across the globe to come together for a day of seminars, demonstrations, and product presentations from industry-related and lifestyle brands in a laidback festival atmosphere. Founded by Marc van de Hare of Van de Hare Amsterdam Barbers, BarberSociety Live is a qualitative event for barbers and men’s hairstylists who are interested in barber related issues. The unique barbers-only event will be held in ‘Zuiveringshal West’ at the Westergasfabriek Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam, a bigger venue than in 2016, providing more space for visitors and participants. Marc van de Hare said: “BarberSociety Live is the leading meeting place for barbers. That’s why it’s so important for us to have a relaxed setting where they can ‘chew the fat’ abou the barbering profession. I’m looking forward to catching up again with my colleagues from the private BarberSociety Facebook community. It will also be great to exchange experiences with my European colleagues who are BarberSociety members. That’s why we’re promoting this year’s event in a select number of European countries.” The international flavour of the event is set to be increased with more barbers from abroad and BarberNV will be there every step of the way as official UK media partner. Our very own columnist Alan Findlay will be returning with his group The B.O.M.B. Squad while issue six Educator of the Month Chris Foster will be sharing his wisdom once more, and Sid Sottung is making his debut. For the latest news and information on BarberSociety Live keep your eye on the BarberNV social media channels and the BarberSociety website www.barbersociety.info
T
he recent huge rise in traditional barbershops is a direct result of men looking for a more customised “men only” experience. The 80s and 90s saw the rise of the unisex salon which kept the classic barber shop in the shadows. But not anymore, master barbers, proud of their individualism, are keen to promote their skills in an atmosphere reminiscent of the 19th and early 20th century combined with Victorian elegant furnishings, traditional barber chairs, luxury upholstery, artistic frescoes, ornate mirrors, atmospheric lighting, even crystal chandeliers – these are typical interior design features of a barbershop of that golden era, being reproduced by the modern day barber. The Barber Equipment Centre have just opened their doors to a new showroom which is totally dedicated to vintage and antique furniture and artefacts. As one barber said to us whilst browsing around: “This place is amazing it is exactly the sort of items I am looking for. I am looking to bring back the authentic and masculine barbershop where a guy can relax, take their minds off the hard day’s work just like they where sat in their local, creating an environment which in many cases it’s not to dissimilar to the Village Pub. The barbershop is a tradition that has changed very little. Whilst unisex salons are often promoting new techniques and services, many barbers are focused on providing a social outlet - where customers can meet and catch up with

old acquaintances. Today’s vintage style barbershops go the extra mile offering additional services like a beer or a nip of whiskey, paying tribute to the golden age of barbering, when getting a beard trim was a full-service affair. Experienced barbers also give customised tips on improving daily grooming routine. For today’s man walking into a barbershop, one gets much more than a haircut or a shave – he can engage in some great stories, jokes, and debates and become a part of a manly tradition that is definitely worth its revival.

Established my managing director Kyle Ross, Huntsman is named after the inventor of the straight razor and is the only barbers in the city to stock Hanz de Fuko hair products, and the only one north of Glasgow to offer the distinctive Brighton Beard Company. Kyle has almost 10 years of industry experience and has worked in some of Aberdeen’s top hair salon. He now hopes to bring the innovative barbering trends that are taking bigger cities by storm to the Granite City through his new venture. Having already been nominated for an Aberdeen’s Best Barber award, there’s no doubting the skill and technical ability on show at the shop. Part of the top customer service provided by Huntsman are its in-depth client consultations, to
ensure that customers decide on the cut and style that will best suit their face shape and hair type. Not to mention a 50” plasma TV screen dedicated to playing Sky Sports. The 950 sq ft premises has an additional 500 sq ft basement for possible expansion. It features a stylish contemporary interior, with a black and copper colour scheme. Kyle said: “I wanted to create an environment that was completely different to the walk-in barbers that most men are used to. Guys can relax in the knowledge that we will spend as much time as needed on their hair, rather than just a quick five-minute job. We talk customers through the entire process and give them guidance on what styles would suit them best. “My team and I are dedicated to providing a high-quality service to everyone that walks through the door. We will be focusing on regular training, so that we can provide our clients with the most up-to-date industry knowledge.” Open Tuesday – Saturday: 9AM – 6PM Appointments: 01224 970783

ba r bers of t he duk e Having successfully opened Hallstar Barbers in Weston-Super-Mare three years ago, James Hall turned his attention to his second project in the town – Barbers of the Duke. After finding the ideal location, James’s first job was to completely gut the place from top to bottom, taking it down to a blank canvas from which he could realise his ideas.
his team, it’s a way of life and they embrace every aspect of it from the fashion scene within to not only being there for his customers as a barber but as a friend to lend an ear. The role of the barber as more than just offering a haircutting service has been in the spotlight more than ever lately and at Barbers of the Duke they embrace it.
Picturing a clean looking shop, James took inspiration from the classic ‘public toilet’ look with the bright, white tiles allowing light to shine off and illuminate the surroundings while creating a feeling of space.
With two barbershops running smoothly, that might be more than enough for some people to be getting along with, but James has plans to share his passion and his skills in the educational side of the industry, while hoping to improve on his own barbering along the way. A young man with big ideas for the future, rather than just helping other barbers improve their skills, James also wants to reach out to people who have had a rough time in their life and help them change their situation. A worthwhile effort indeed.
While Barbers of the Duke certainly hints at a traditional and old-school feel, it’s very much a modern and up-to-date barbershop with every style imaginable catered for – from classic flattops to trendy skin-fades or whatever the flavour of the month happens to be. James’s passion is clear, and with almost a decade’s experience in the industry since the age of 16 he’s knowledgeable beyond his years. It’s more than just a job for him and

paul m ac speci a l h a ir Special by name, special by nature. Paul Mac Special isn’t the only person to grace our cover twice, the Irishman is one of the most creative and talented barbers in the industry. Having recently joined up as the latest Young Fed, he has now opened his own shop in Cork, Paul Mac Special Hair where he is joined by a team of top quality barbers. A special opening night kicked it all off as Voice of Ireland winner Keith Hanley provided entertainment for a host of guests from far and wide, all keen to be involved in what is sure to be Cork’s premier barbershop. With Jameson Irish Whiskey keeping the drink flowing, and Roosters Piri Piri and Charlys Cheesecakes supplying the food, it was certainly a night to remember – if you didn’t drink too much that is! The official opening was made by award winning hairstylist Wayne Lloyd. Talk about starting as you mean to go on, with such a great night for all involved, there couldn’t have been a better first impression. Now that the celebrations are
out of the way, it’s all about the haircuts, although you can still rely on a complimentary Jamesons if you are over the age of 21 while you wait. Paul’s reputation is richly deserved and he just seems to be getting better and better, while his team are just as good. With six chairs in the shop and a Resurva booking system in place you can normally rely on being seen when you need it, with both bookings and walk-ins being accepted. The shop itself has a traditional look with the brick effect walls, ornate mirrors, and wooden furnishings, while the 28ft custom made waiting couch means you’ll be sitting in comfort as you admire the other cuts being done. While Paul is renowned for his more experimental haircuts, like the ones that have graced the covers of issues six and nine of BarberNV, whether you’re looking for a traditional pomp or a modern skinfade, you’ll be in safe hands with any one of the team. So if you want a haircut that will make you stand out from the crowd, Paul Mac Special is the place to go.

T eddy’s ba r ber shop ince opening last year, Teddy’s Barber Shop has steadily gained a reputation as one of the top barbershops in Northampton. Situated in a prominent position in the centre of town, the premises has a strong barbering heritage as it was formerly a successful traditional barbershop for 44 years. Now owner Nigel Vokes is hoping to re-establish it as the barbershop of choice in the town. Nigel himself has been barbering for almost 40 years, training with his late father and opening his first salon at the tender age of just 18. He has had a number of successful barbershops around the county and is very proud to have trained a BarberNV Barber of the Month – Lynndy Rolfe who went on to become an Andis International Educator, freelance session stylist, platform artist, and British Master Barber. Teddy’s Barber Shop covers everything you’d need from a traditional barbershop and specialises in skin fades, hot towel shaves, beard shaping, and much more. Nigel says that customer
service has always been of the utmost importance and one look at the numerous positive comments on their Facebook page show that it is certainly working. Staff training is also a priority, with all the Teddy’s staff hand-picked for their passion and knowledge of the industry. They aren’t stopping there though and Nigel aims to make Teddy’s the number one barbershop in Northamptonshire, with future planned expansion to open a further two floors within the premises offering male grooming and shoeshine. With such quality barbers having previously trained under Nigel’s stewardship, it’s certainly a good place to work and an even better place to go for a cut. Nigel’s reputation and pedigree are sure to mean that further expansion should go smoothly and there’s every chance of Teddy’s becoming the number one shop in Northamptonshire.

RISING STAR TOM PIPKIN Social media has changed barbering. Sharing ideas and styles has never been easy and there’s no doubt it’s contributed to the current boom that has seen the popularity and talent in the industry
skyrocket. For us at BarberNV it’s been a tool to help us identify and promote up-and-coming and hitherto unheard of barbers through our Instagram Showcase. Step forward Tom Pipkin, or as you may know him, @TommyPoppet, who appeared in our first Instagram Showcase in issue eight. Youth is no barrier to success and Tom has proven that with a 2016 that would leave more experienced barbers envious. Winner of the BBA National Student of the Year, performing on-stage at Salon International, and working day-to-day at Baldy’s Barber alongside Daren ‘Baldy’ Kenny and, until he opened his own store, his good friend Kieron Price – two of the best in the business. How it all began While many ‘wannabe’ barbers are opting for quick and dirty training options offered by educators promising to get you barbershop ready in a few weeks, Tom took a barbering course at Aylesbury College after talking with Kieron about taking it up as a trade and cutting his friends’ hair while on lunch break in 6th form. He was clearly keen, but when he went to college, Tom had an advantage over his fellow student. He says: “I was attending college alongside being at Baldy’s a couple of days a week. It accelerated my learning quicker than the other students because I was pushing myself to get out of college to get into barbering. Technically it was a year’s course but I was only in college for five months and I had completed everything. I’d recommend anyone doing college should get into a barbershop alongside.” Furthering his skills It’s not a surprise that working with barbers of the calibre of Baldy and Kieron would improve the standard of Tom’s work. After all Baldy is a Lead Educator at Andis and Kieron is also an International Educator with the clipper company. But Tom wasn’t overawed at training with them. “Because I knew them just as a customer I never looked at them as these big worldwide barbers, they’re just Baldy and Kieron! We would go in, laugh all day, and cut hair. I would get a couple of models in during the week and they would stand by and walk me through any bits I needed.
was surreal in itself.” Capping off his winning weekend at Barber UK was performing on the Andis stage, his first stage work, but with an appearance at Salon International following, we can expect to see more of Tom on the big stage. However, at the moment he is happy to focus on his day-to-day shop work, working with customers alongside Baldy, and improving his skills. “I love barbershop work,” he says. “It’s what everything stems from at the end of the day. You have to get your clients and enjoy your work – everything else will come from that. “In our shop Baldy gets a lot of older customers because he’s been around for 25 years and I get lots of younger customers aged about 13-21. Some of the customers I get want to change their style and they put their trust in me. Sometimes I question them myself, like ‘Do you really want to do that?’’ Tom jokes. Customer satisfaction He might be modest about his abilities, but his customers clearly believe in him and with social media allowing his work to be seen far and wide, he’s even attracted some international clientele already! “Social media is huge for everyone, it gets you out there and shows you people what you can do. I have a customer that comes from Amsterdam, when he flies back to see his family he pops in for a haircut, that’s just because of social media. It’s crazy. I have another customer that comes up from Cornwall. People are really loyal to their barbers – we have queues of about four hours on a Saturday and I’m thinking ‘these people must really like what we do to their hair!’” Hair inspiration As well as using social media to show off his work, Tom naturally gets inspiration from fellow barbers from around the UK and Ireland, including Ryan Cullen, Mickey Graham, and Neal Toner. While he’s keen to bring colouring into his styling thanks to people like Toastie Styles and Tom Baxter.
It was Kieron who encouraged Tom to enter the BBA’s National Student of the Year competition, which Tom would go on to win.
Taking tips from the best in the business and learning day-to-day from Baldy, things can only get better for Tom and he’s happy with the course he’s on. When we ask about his plans for the future he says: “I’m planning on staying with Baldy. Who wouldn’t want to be here? He’s the Lead Educator for Andis, he’s absolutely huge. I hate blowing his trumpet because his head is already massive, but he’s who you want to be with if you want to pursue a stage career and better yourself.”
He says: “I was really new to barber shows and everything. I started showcasing my haircuts on Instagram and seeing how good the reception was, Kieron said ‘You should enter this’ but I didn’t want to as I hadn’t been doing it long. But he pushed me, I submitted the images and we heard back that I was a finalist which
In the right place, working hard, and aiming for the stars. Tom is meeting all the criteria to make it big in the barbering world and we’re looking forward to watching his journey. He’ll be on the Andis stage at Barber UK in May if you want to see him in action, and trust us, he’s definitely worth a look.
“I learned a lot of fading from Kieron, a lot of clipper over comb, and I learned a lot of the classics from Baldy. They’re both great barbers and they helped a great deal.” Entering competitions

Hair Transplant Surgery Dr Nestor Demosthenous highlights the issue of hair loss and explains the treatments available For many men, the thought of losing their hair is a real concern. Our hair is a statement of our personality, a way to express ourselves, an image we present to the world.
H
owever, according to recent NHS figures, 50% of men will experience some degree of male pattern baldness in their lifetime, and while many men recognise the probability it could happen to them, most live with the hope and expectation that it won’t.
Words: Dr Nestor
The effects of losing your hair – particularly for younger men – can be difficult to deal with. The rise of Instagram and the smart phone means image is everywhere these days, which can be disconcerting when you don’t feel happy about the way you look, especially when it feels as if it is something that you have no control over. But why do men lose their hair in the first place? The main cause of hair loss, for 95% of men experiencing a thinning scalp, is androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male pattern baldness. The condition occurs due to the conversion of testosterone to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). A common misconception is that hair falls out, but it doesn’t – it actually shrinks. Every single hair on the head grows from a follicle, which continues to produce hair on a consistent basis. But when DHT is present, it shrinks the follicle and forces the hairs to become thinner and thinner, and eventually the follicle stops working completely. The consequences of male pattern hair loss can be traumatising and difficult to deal with. A head full of hair is a sign of youth, strength, and virility, and many men suffering with premature baldness may feel emasculated by this sudden reversal of fortunes, especially when it seems that a solution is impossible to find. Hair loss is always about much more than a receding hairline; it can deeply affect confidence and self-esteem. Recent research has found that hair loss can lead to exaggerated feelings of ugliness and, in the worst cases, trigger body dysmorphic disorder, where sufferers experience acute anxiety about the way they look. This research also revealed that the emotional burden of going bald can affect self-confidence, and be the root cause of mental disorders and an impaired quality of life. The situation isn’t helped by the portrayal of prematurely balding men in the media; Prince William is one example of somebody very much in the public eye experiencing hair loss and suffering disparaging comments because of it. Jude Law has consistently been making headlines regarding his has-he-hasn’t-he hair.
profile victim of male pattern baldness. Aged 39, Brady looks to be suffering from hair loss on the frontal section of his scalp. Common consensus is that Brady’s latest hairstyle may have been strategically chosen to help disguise the area of loss while a longer-term solution is arranged.

transplants is slowly but surely changing. As modern techniques and pioneering science behind the procedures lead the way, hair transplants are unrecognisable from the old ideas of unsightly plugs and uneven hairlines. It is also a time for a change in attitude towards the procedure, which is why I installed a state-of-the-art operating theatre into my Medical Cosmetic Centre in Edinburgh that is specifically equipped to perform hair

transplants. It is the only one of its kind in Edinburgh, where I see you from consultation, through treatment and all follow ups through recovery. Today’s procedures are incredibly advanced and carry a success rate of 90-100%, resulting in a natural finish. Hair transplantation can improve hair density at the front of the head and the crown, by moving follicles from unaffected areas at the back of the head. We use two very successful techniques for hair transplant surgery: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT or Strip Technique) surgery. Both procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic, and both are extremely effective at delivering natural results. While both procedures have pros and cons, the best treatment is the one that suits your needs and scalp. FUE involves removing healthy hair follicles directly from a donor area (usually at the back of the head, where hair is plentiful) and grafting them onto the thinning or balding areas. There is no detectable scarring and in most cases, patients are able to return to work within the week. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and as stitches aren’t required, recovery time is reduced. In cases where there are not enough follicles to extract individually, then a strip of follicles can be extracted, which is the FUT method. This is usually taken from the middle of the back of the head, an area which is largely immune to DHT. The FUT strip method leaves a fine, pale linear scar at the back of your head, which is easily covered by your own hair. Dissolvable sutures are used, which are usually absorbed within two to three weeks, although I recommend removing them between eight and twelve days after the procedure. Many old methods of hair transplants saw patients take weeks to recover, however today’s methods are sophisticated enough that most patients return to work and normal daily life after a week following their surgery. The results are quicker too. Within two to three weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but the new implanted follicles remain and patients will start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will have attained 60% of new hair growth after six to nine months, with almost full restoration after a year. It is always going to be a big decision as to whether hair transplant surgery is right for you, but if you are concerned about thinning hair or balding, hair transplantation can significantly improve your appearance and your self-confidence – it’s no exaggeration to say that it really can change your life. However, as with every medical procedure, it’s essential that you do your research, and book a consultation with a specialist doctor or surgeon trained in these procedures, who will give you honest and informed advice about the best treatment for you. Dr Nestor’s specialist operating theatre for hair restoration procedures is now open; please visit www.drnestor.co.uk to book a consultation.

I hope you found my last article on the new apprenticeship training regime interesting and helpful even though it might have seemed somewhat long winded and wordy; I did want to get as much of the vital information over to you as I could at one hit. ou’ll have gathered from my previous writings that education and industry training are very much topics that are close to my heart. Even though you might think, here we go again, he’s going to be banging on about how the trade has gone downhill since the good old days, and, training standards have diminished; let me relate to you the way I spent my Sunday this past week. I had arranged to go along to the ProHair Live event at Manchester Central Exhibition Centre and do a bit on the Barber Council stand. In reality I did not do my fair share as Gary Machin – (Chairman of The Barber Council) was in full swing recruiting new members, left, right, and centre, who were more than willing to sign up to become State Registered Barbers. Also worthy of note for doing their bit on the Barber Council stand were Alison Scattergood from East Durham College and Wahl’s own Michael Damiano, both of them kept the spectators interested by showcasing their technical and artistic skills. State Registration is a fundamental stepping stone for us (and I do mean everyone involved in our great craft) to get the recognition and respect we deserve as fully fledged professionals. So my efforts paled into insignificance against those of Gary et al. If you want to get to know more about becoming a State Registered Barber, and cashing in on the advantages it can offer you and your business, check out the following:http://barbercouncil.org.uk/ So back to my day at the exhibition. There was a huge emphasis this year on Barbering, or what is becoming seen to be Barbering (more on this latter in the article). Wahl took on a huge commitment with what they dubbed Wahl Street – a
collection of different stands where various displays were shown and vendors plied their wares. Denman too were creating a strong presence; it’s worth noting too that both Jonathan King from Denman and Simon Shaw from Wahl UK are also Barber Council Members and strongly support and advocate State Registration for barbers. Again I digress. I walked the whole of the show stopping of at every stand and spent time at all the exhibition stages; watching those brave souls who ventured on stage and showed off their work. This is an action that takes a great deal of bottle and I applaud them for their courage, skill, and ability. It’s so easy to sit and watch these guys and girls do their bit in front of an audience and then turn away and say to your mate that you could have done better, well, believe me, it’s not easy and I’ve seen many a potential big shot who is quite cock-sure back stage come onto the podium and get tongue tied and simply go to pieces. Well done to everyone who worked the show. After doing the full circuit of the auditorium it suddenly struck me that everyone who was demonstrating was doing much the same thing; that is to say, the all too common - fade on the back and sides and point cutting on top. Where, oh, where is the variety? I saw very little evidence of club cutting, I saw no real scissor over comb work, very little skilled clipper over comb work. I did not see any razor cutting. No one was demonstrating the skilled use of tapering shears, thinning scissors or texturising scissors; and yes I know that there are some of you who will be reading this article who decry the use of these tools and see them as something akin to the devil’s work. Well my advice to you is that, in the right hands and with some
degree of skill and knowledge thinners, texturisers, and tapering shears are a really good addition to any skilled craftsman tool chest and it’s only ignorance and lack of good tuition on how to get the best out of these tools that has given rise to their fall from popularity. I also need to record the lack of curl, colour, and that is without mentioning any competent blow-drying. In short what I witnessed was what is becoming a mono-culture; everyone doing the same old, same old stuff that everyone else was doing. My advice to you is: don’t follow the well beaten path, do something different, but don’t turn your back on tried and trusted techniques just because the t’itnernet says it’s not cool to do so. Get real, learn, and practice as many different skills and techniques as you can master. Change will come and when we have that major change of fashion, when the fade, fades away, you’ll be ready to meet the challenge of the new wave that follows. In my career I have seen change after change; right from the teddy-boy styles, through the mod era, skinheads, punks, new romantics, goths, rock-a-billy, curly perms to GI buzz cuts, and yes, I’ve had to adapt to every one of those fashion changes. All because I kept an open mind and was willing to adapt and learn and I hope that having read this you will see that there are valid techniques out there that are worth bringing into your repertoire, and then hopefully the next time I am trolling round a hair exhibition it’s you that I see on stage, fully confident in what you are doing, giving a first class demonstration of you skills to an appreciative audience of your peers and most importantly showing them something different. Until next time, keep snipping and clipping Robert Rix SHR SRSB MCH MCB
