Welcome

WELCOME H

ello everyone and welcome to issue two of Salon NV magazine. We have just about recovered from our launch party last month – what a night – and it was fantastic to celebrate with so many contributors, salon owners, stylists, beauticians and more, with a glass of Moët or two (or three – not pointing any elbows, SalonNV co-founder Andrew Brewster). Since then, we have taken our little black and yellow beauty bible on the road, attending the Scottish Beauty Show and The Great British Barber Bash across the border, amongst other events. We have been overwhelmed by the response to SalonNV and hope you are all set to enjoy issue two just as much.

This month we are honoured to feature the legend that is hairdresser and business man Charlie Miller, Scottish entrepreneur and OBE Jennifer Cheyne, nail artist extraordinaire Dorota Palicka, plus, we share some special news, with barber Garry Spencer revealing all about the Barber Bash coming to Scotland for the first time, with a forthcoming date at Glasgow’s Drygate. With festival season under way, we also look at the colourful styles sure to be topping the request list this summer, whilst our resident Cosmetic Doctor and expert, Dr Nestor reveals all you need to know about the world of BOTOX®. Add to that the hottest new products ready to hit your salon shelves and we have plenty to keep you entertained and informed with our second offering.

Enjoy, Laura X LAURA BOYD | GUEST EDITOR /SalonNVMagazine

enhanced procedure is also a very good business investment, as it offers a high level of return. Many clients are looking for the best and most advanced beauty methods around – so if you’re not offering the latest techniques – you’re losing out! Allilon embark on a trip to Canada & Vietnam The talented Allilon Education team had a busy few months, taking both their Primary Shapes course and Primary Disconnection course over to Canada and Vietnam. “Allilon Education believes in profiling the brand globally to spread the Allilon philosophy far and wide,” Johnny Othona, co-founder of Allilon Education said. “We love meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. Each year we learn something new, which helps us to refine and evolve our educational offerings.” Co-founder, Johnny Othona and Master Stylist, Jonathan Corby visited Canada in March to teach the four day Primary Shapes course to a number of Canadian hairdressers wanting to further develop their skills. The renowned education company specialises in producing educational hair shows and seminars and exploring shapes and form in haircutting and colouring techniques. The hairdressers were taught the basic principles of hairdressing and how to work in a professional environment where they will have to make decisions on what shape and length would be suitable for

a client unsure of what would suit them. Johnny and Jonathan had a very successful trip with eleven students attending the course from the 23rd of March to the 26th. A few days later, Allilon Cofounder, Pedro Inchenko and Allilon Colour Director, Madeleine Murphy took a trip to Vietnam to teach the four day Primary Disconnection course as well as a cut and colour seminar of the brand’s latest collection, Okafor, from the 2nd of April to the 5th. The course was designed to introduce stylists to the world of primary disconnection and helped students understand when the right time to use disconnection was and how to do so. The Allilon Education team then presented the Okafor collection during a live show in front of an audience of more than 150 hairdressers from the 6th to the 7th of April. The Allilon Education team don’t stay in one place for long – they jet off to South Africa in May to deliver further courses from the Allilon syllabus and have been invited to present an outstanding show in November, to an audience of 1,000 in Vietnam’s largest city Ho Chi Minh City.

Salon owners are warned to check exclusivity clauses The National Hairdressers’ Federation is warning salon owners who have employees on zero hour contracts to check they do not include exclusivity clauses. The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills announced this week, that contracts cannot contain exclusivity clauses which prevent employees from working elsewhere - even though the contract does not guarantee work or hours. “Zero hour contracts are not really common place across our industry but if your salon does use them, it’s now important to check the small print and remove any exclusivity clauses,” NHF chief executive Hilary Hall said. One of the most requested resources by NHF members is employment contracts and changes to employment law means employers must keep their contracts up-to-date. To find out more on the NHF providing free contracts for members, visit www.nhf.info to find out more. 10 | SalonNV Magazine

Davines’ Joseph DiMaggio styles backstage at Bridal Fashion Week Joseph DiMaggio, the leading stylist for luxury hair care brand, Davines had the chance to style backstage at Bridal Fashion Week 2016 in April this year. Bridal Fashion Week honours renowned designers and their latest bridal designs for the upcoming spring/summer season. Joseph styled backstage for two of the most distinguished designers – Reem Acra and Naeem Khan. Joseph created the hair look for the models backstage at Reem Acra’s show, where her vision was avant-garde inspired, making the hair the main piece of unexpected bridal jewellery. To reach the look Reem imagined, Joseph used long extensions to fashion a strong structured braid and romanticised it with diamond and pearl accessories from Reem’s creation. “Reem Acra’s intricate bead work and sexy silhouettes are true works of art,” Joseph said. Joseph has worked with Naeem Khan at the A/W 2015 Fashion Week and was excited to work with him again for his bridal show. “There is nothing as inspiring as the work of Naeem Khan, especially in his bridal collections,” Joseph said. Naeem Khan’s vision was a modern, yet classic bride with subtle underwater and seashell influences. To achieve the look Naeem envisioned, Joseph complemented his idyllic beadwork with a demure roped bun – reminiscent of a flower in bloom. Seashell crowns were seen on the models throughout the show, and so the natural backswept style also provides the perfect frame for them. Joseph DiMaggio fashioned beautifully breath-taking hair styles, it’s no surprise he is one of the best and well-known hairstylists in the industry.

These international awards feature over 5,000 entrants and ends with 61 contestants battling it out for an overall winner in the final show. With a host of respected names in the industry on the judging panel, the event forecasts the upcoming hair fads and the latest techniques professionals are using to style hair. Prior to the Wella Trendvision on December 1st, the Insight Events were held in February, where entrants were shown innovations and top tips to ensure they are well prepared for the final. The Owner and Creative Director of Halo Hair and Beauty, Joseph Ferraro is very excited about the success of the salon and its employers, “This is great news for Kirstie, Natalie and the team at Halo. Two thirds of British beauty workers wish to work abroad It has been revealed, thanks to a new BABTAC survey, that two thirds of beauty professionals in the UK have the desire to work abroad. The US, Australia and Spain were the three top desired destinations for professionals in the industry, with Italy and Switzerland reigning fourth and fifth. BABTAC carried out this research to obtain information about international work and travel opportunities in the beauty sector and how this compares with the threat of workers in the UK from overseas. “The beauty industry is one which affords workers some really good opportunities overseas and it’s no wonder that many of us wouldn’t mind taking the chance to travel and find our feet in other countries,” Emma Roberts, marketing executive of BABTAC said. 2,121 of British employees currently working in the beauty industry and over the age of eighteen,

were involved in this survey, where 68% of the respondents confirmed they would like to work abroad. 22% of this response was given from nail technicians, 16% was by masseuses and 13% of make-up artists said they would like to work abroad. Where 29% of respondents believed their own jobs were under threat due to immigrant labour, only 6% specified they would feel guilty about the effect on local employment if they were to take a job abroad. “What’s particularly interesting is that such a huge majority would happily take a job abroad without any guilt or thought as to the fact that they are essentially taking a spot which could have otherwise employed a local person; something which we’ve heard many complaints about recently,” Emma Roberts said.

The launch of Westrow Finishing School Westrow Academy was launched in the heart of Leeds in 2013 to give people the chance of studying hairdressing, barbering, business and management, and now, the Westrow Finishing School gives students the chance to learn valuable skills, ensuring they stay with them for the rest of their career. The Finishing School is available for graduates of Westrow internal education programme and attendees that have completed or due to complete the NVQ Level 3 in hairdressing. This programme will help graduates become versatile stylists, ensure they are prepared for the salon floor and enable that external graduates become on-brand. Westrow Educational Director, Leanne Brown teaches small classes of eight, covering the fundamentals and classics of hairdressing. Students will learn valuable skills that are essential to them, their clients, the salon and business, and these skills they learn to master will stay with them for the rest of their career. Graduates of the Finishing School

attend a small graduate event and then will work alongside qualified hairdressers in the salon group to build up their own clientele and loyalty. “Attending the Westrow Finishing School will make a student a great, all-round stylist, helping them learn how to interact with their clients and provide fantastic consultations,” Westrow Director, Steve Rowbottom said. “The Westrow Finishing School has become very attractive to other salon owners and as the Westrow Academy is a private facility, it can be used for this kind of training across a range of industry salons.” www.SalonNV.co.uk | 11

Interview

THE CHEYNE REACTION Edinburgh is home to Scottish entrepreneur and founder of the Cheynes Group of hair salons and training companies, Jennifer Cheyne – and what a leading light in the world of hairdressing and business she is. But where did her drive and desire to cut it in this industry come from?

J

ennifer told SalonNV: “My parents expected me to go to university but I knew from an early age that I enjoyed the world of work, as I had part time jobs from a young age, so I pleaded with my Dad to let me leave school to start an apprenticeship in hairdressing.” Luckily he agreed and Jennifer has never looked back. When she opened her first salon, she was extremely nervous but knew that her team had something new to offer the Edinburgh public. She was right: the business rapidly grew and by the second year, the salon was booked every day with 10 stylists taking care of demand. That’s when Jennifer knew it was time to open her second salon. Now with six salons and multiple business accolades under her belt, what makes Jennifer’s salons stand out? She said: “The team are very talented, highly motivated and extremely loyal. We have over 50 of the team that have been with us over 10 years, 30 of these over 20 and 6 over 30 years.” “They love their job and are always wanting to keep getting better and better. They are the maddest, funniest and most positive bunch of people and the clients always comment how much they enjoy their visit as they enjoy the light atmosphere. They love having fun but are also very professional.” Jennifer also prides herself in having two completely different Training Companies. “The first is Cheynes Education which is an advanced Academy for already qualified hairdressers and Salon Owners. Our school is based in the West End of Edinburgh which is now headed up by Paul Adamzcuk, who is the M.D. of Cheynes and also a very creative hairdresser. It all started over 25 years ago when we were travelling the world presenting shows and seminars. Every country we went to hairdressers were always asking if they could come to our school to learn the Cheynes techniques. We opened Cheynes Academy over 25 years ago and The Academy is still going strong offering 1 and 2 day courses. We have a very talented team of Educators who travel to present in-salon seminars regularly and teach in our school and all the Wella Academies.” Jennifer continued: “The second company is called Cheynes Training, which was launched 24 years ago due to the demand from salons to use the training programme we originally designed for our own team. This company has now developed into being one of the largest

14 | SalonNV Magazine

Training Providers in the UK for SVQ and NVQ qualifications.” And that’s not all: Jennifer also designed and produced a professional colouring product called Clipmeche. She explained: “At that time, I was concerned that all the highlighting systems on the market left the clients colour still too far from the root and also tint or bleach could expand and seep and therefore cause problems and sometimes an unsatisfactory result. “It also used to concern me, seeing all the tinfoil and meche in the bin - it seemed such a waste. “I then designed reusable and eco friendly Clipmeche, which we use on our Cheynes clients continually. The colour goes right to the root and we get 100% result from every Stylist, every time,

on every client. It is a really successful product and hairdressers who use it, love it, and keep ordering it as they have confidence in the result and save thousands of pounds due to it being reusable. My brother Richard now runs Clipmeche and you can find out more by calling 01204 592611. Jennifer has styled everyone from royalty to pop stars and she is a woman who is ready for every occasion. “OMG if I am going to a photo shoot, I take EVERYTHING! “Fail to Prepare Prepare to Fail” is my motto, which I drum into the Team.” At the moment, she is enjoying clients taking the plunge and going for really different cuts, plus she told us: “Colour is hugely popular in all the Cheynes Salons as we designed a Colour Degree Course and we now have 16 Colour Specialists who have completed this course. It has taken them to the top level as a Colourist and therefore every haircut gets enhanced with great colour and no two clients colour is ever the same.” Jennifer has done and achieved so much, but aside from her own salon success, she is extremely proud of the time when she was President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and she received a special call. “Vidal Sassoon called me out the blue and asked to be a speaker at my next Presidents Dinner. He flew in especially on a private jet to attend. The 500 hairdressers there were truly thrilled. The icing on the cake was when Vidal invited me and my husband Cliff to his house in Beverley Hills. He even came and picked us up at our hotel and took us for dinner at The Ivy in LA. I had to pinch myself!” She was also awarded an OBE in 2013. “This was definitely the biggest highlight of my career. I really thought when I got the letter from the Prime Minister that it was a few of the guys in the salon kidding me on, then I realised it was genuine. The visit to Buckingham Palace with my family was very special and we celebrated with a big party with family and friends.” So what’s next for Cheynes? “Cheynes will always look for the next opportunity that enhances the group to ensure we go from strength to strength. We will always aim to keep standards as high as possible and exceed the clients’ expectations. I believe in this saying ‘If you find a job you love you never have to work another day in your life’.” Find out more about Jennifer and Cheynes at www.cheyneshairdressing.com

EDITOR’S CHOICE

This month I’m waxing lyrical about the new wax bar at Glasgow’s Rainbow Room George Square, getting brow wow with Beautiful Brows and going green when it comes to my haircare, plus melting away the stresses of the day with a Scottish delight.

RECOFFEE O’right, the green cosmetic brand, has introduced a new haircare line called RECOFFEE. Made of 100 per cent recycled coffee grounds, their haircare range leaves behind zero waste whilst ensuring salon professional results. What’s even more exciting is that the 250ml RECOFFEE shampoo bottle grows into a coffee tree when buried in soil, due to the natural, biodegradable composition of the packaging and the coffee seeds built into the base. Just my cup of tea. I mean coffee. £17.25 – www.o-right.co.uk

Siabann Skin Candles I love supporting local business and have fallen in love with the Siabann range of natural Scottish beauty products. I am particularly impressed with the Siabann Skin Candles. They are a really lovely blend of natural oils and butters, held together by clean burning, 100% natural, soybean wax. After about ten minutes, you can take the oil and put it straight onto your skin! It doesn’t burn (my initial fear) as soy wax melts at a very low temperature warm and it leaves your skin feeling nourished. £7.50 – www.siabann.com

Beautiful Brows Starter Pack My quest for Cara Delevingne brows continues and Beautiful Brows is helping me get one step closer to achieving brow wow. Perfect eyebrows are created in seconds and all the essentials to do so are immaculately presented in an exclusive mirrored compact. Starter Pack £200.00 + VAT – www.beautifulbrows.co.uk

Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss If, like me, your clients like to get lippy, they want to try Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss. I am not the most subtle person in the world and these glosses provide the perfect blast of colour, shocking shine and staying power that I need to get me thought the day/night. They do come in a range of 35 colours, catering for those who prefer a more natural, nude look, right through to purple and the bold beetle, which I love! £16.95 – www.preciousaboutmakeup.com

Rainbow Room International’s new waxing menu Rainbow Room International may be well known for their hairdressing skills but did you know they also offer a wide selection of beauty services? The Royal Exchange Square salon have just launched their new Waxing Room Menu, offering everything from an Express HD Brows service (perfect for those of you like me, who are always on the go) to a super discreet and almost painless specialist bikini wax. The waxes are also available in an array of summer scents, including strawberry – fruity! www.rainbowroominternational.com 16 | SalonNV Magazine

PAMELA DOCHERTY ASTERIA BRIDAL

Aesop Nurturing Shampoo

Oribe Signature Conditioner

This shampoo is another product from a range I regularly endorse to clients. It is particularly nice to recommend to clients heading off on holiday as it gently cleanses residue from the beach, or pool, then moisturises it to leave hair silky and smooth. Containing lavender and fennel oil, to nourish, cleanse, soothe and hydrate sun exposed dry & damaged hair.

Having long been a fan of their amazing serum, I was lucky enough to be sent the Signature Conditioner from the range. The exotic ingredients are sourced from far-flung locations such as the Amazonian Rainforest and the Kalahari Desert to create an indulgent product that you can use every day. It is also paraben and sodium chloridefree and provides UV protection. The antioxidants including Lychee and Elderweiss Flower are perfect for nourishing dehydrated hair.

Summer is upon us and as always my clients are jet setting. I find it so important to have new and exciting products for them to protect their hair from damaging UVA. This year I’ve discovered some gorgeous new ones for my clientele and a fantastic beach hairstyler.

Kerastase ‘The Collection’ - Soleil

Pamela Docherty has over 20 years of experience as a hairdresser and as well as being one of Scotland’s leading bridal hair specialists, she is a stylist to the stars. Internationally trained, she has worked alongside brands including Wella and Patrick Cameron. Pamela’s work has taken her to runways and events around the globe. From presenting models at the iconic Trend vision finals, to being crowned a Best of British hairdresser, she continues to be recognised for her creativity and expert eye. Now one of half of the hugely successful Asteria Bridal team; as well as ensuring blushing brides look simply stunning on their big day, she is also creating head turning looks at the 132 West Regent Street salon. 18 | SalonNV Magazine

In this collection, Kerastase have created a customised three-step beauty ritual: Cleanse, Treat and Texturise with carefully conceived methods to beautify the hair. My favourite in this large range is the Micro-voile Protecteur which acts as a treatment against photo-degradation. This is a fabulous product for clients who have slightly sensitised or colour-treated hair.

Bumble and bumble Surf Infusion This product is perfect for tossing in a beach bag and spraying through wet or dry hair to create soft-sea tossed waves with sheen. Due to its salt-in-oil innovation, this beautifully scented tropical spray somehow manages to achieve texture and shine at the same time, something I’ve not been able to achieve with a single product before. Genius! £21.50 – www.bumbleandbumble.co.uk

Wella Colour from Wella My favourite technical product of the summer is the new Wella Instamatic by Colour Touch. This product is young, fun and fresh – it delivers the most gorgeous soft shades through a fine blend of colour molecules that diffuse gradually into the hair cuticles. We stylists can personalise colour treatments for clients using beautiful shades such as ‘Smokey Amethyst’ - my personal favourite – ‘Pink Dream’ and ‘Ocean Storm’. With quick development times and fantastic results, it is a great salon addition. It works very well to soften any balyage or ombre styles that are a bit tired and need toning and freshening. www.wella.com

FACE FACTS WITH DOCTOR NESTOR:

DID SOMEONE SAY ‘BOTOX’? Welcome to the June/July issue of SalonNV. Summer is here, although it might not feel like it outside, but it’s time to look good, to look fabulous, to look… youthful!

I

n this issue, I’m going to concentrate on the most popular, non surgical medical cosmetic procedure the world has ever seen. With well over one million treatments in the UK alone last year, BOTOX® has consistently remained in the number one spot for several years. ‘BOTOX’ is a word kicked about quite flippantly. What is it? What does it do? Who can administer it? Who is it for? First, some facts and a touch of history. BOTOX® is the brand name of a drug made from botulinum toxin. Several companies make a version of this drug. They vary on how long they last, how far they spread, what kind of results they give and their cost. I’m not saying one is better than the other, I’m just saying, strictly speaking there is only one BOTOX® which is made by a company called Allergan. It’s like saying “hoover” and referring to all vacuum cleaners. They’re not all the same. Ask DYSON. BOTOX® has been used medically for just over 60 years. Interestingly, it is the most researched drug in the world… ever! So it’s safe (in the right hands and when used correctly of course). Now that that is cleared up, what does it do and how does it do it? Lets touch on a bit of anatomy… the brain sends branches of nerves to muscles which in turn send a signal to make that muscle work. Botulinum toxin stops this signal from jumping from the nerve to the muscle. As a result no movement. BOTOX® has been used cosmetically for 26 years. It has been used on and off label in the upper third of the face for getting rid of our “angry scowl”, “crows feet”, forehead lines and in the most recent years has been used in the lower half of the face for “gummy smile”, “orange peel chin”, even in the neck and further afield in breasts. Wherever used, the reason is the same… to stop or weaken movement. If we can reduce how much the muscle moves, then we can reduce how much the skin over it will wrinkle. See where I’m going with this? No more wrinkles! If we start taking the wrinkles away we start to look that bit fresher and more youthful. Who can prescribe and administer botox?

32 | SalonNV Magazine

BOTOX® and all such drugs are prescription only medications. This means that only a doctor, nurse prescriber or dentist can assess a patient and prescribe it. Not only are they the only ones who can prescribe it, but they are the only ones that have access to it. If it’s not coming from them, it’s not the real deal. There are many salons offering “wrinkle relaxing injections”, and certainly before setting up my own clinic with my wife Michelle (a nurse prescriber- and no, we didn’t meet at work), we ran clinics out of salons and spas all over Scotland. Many of you will already have medical practitioners coming to your salon and offering treatments. Many of you are looking for someone. The “hair and beauty” world is a wonderful industry where we all play our part. We all have our roles, strengths and weaknesses, and when we come together, we can do great things for the people that matter the most, our clients, our patients. Remember this when you are approached by a medical practitioner or seek one for your clients. They are YOUR clients, the reason you are in business. You want to offer them the best service, the best treatment, and the best experience. Do your homework. Is the practitioner qualified? Are they insured? Are they treating your clients responsibly? Are they easy to contact? If the treatment went ‘petetong’ would they know what to do? What can you do to make the treatment and experience better and safer for your clients? A clean environment is critical. Good light and privacy are paramount. Your client and the practitioner must be comfortable in their surroundings, not made to squeeze in a corner, over a sink (don’t laugh I’ve seen this happen). If your practitioner doesn’t use “BOTOX”, that’s ok, but don’t tell your clients that he/she does. You wouldn’t say ‘great lengths extensions’ and use something else would you? Who is it for? There isn’t really an age restriction on when to get treatment, but if we understand why we are using it, then we can appreciate at what age it’s acceptable to start. If our aim is to soften the stubborn lines that have become engrained in our skin from

Advanced Beauty

repetitive movement (static lines), then wrinkle relaxing treatments should really start in our late 20s, early 30s. I’m not saying it has to start then, but this is an acceptable time. There is no good reason to start treatment before these static lines appear. Unfortunately we live a country where the weather is miserable and the sun is something we only read about in holiday brochures, so many flock to sun-beds. Sun-beds speed up our skins ageing process and I have seen static lines in girls as young as 19. Not good. Wrinkle relaxing treatments will last 3-5 months, and to sustain the result, will require to be done again and again and again. The earlier you start the longer you will need to get it for to achieve your desired result. BOTOX® and dermal fillers shouldn’t be abused. Our end goal shouldn’t be ‘plastic fantastic’. It’s about looking good, looking great. NATURALLY great. As humans, we are gifted with emotion and facial expression of these emotions, whether we’re laughing, smiling, engaged in conversation or just annoyed. As a cosmetic doctor, and I’m sure most of my colleagues will agree, our aim is to airbrush out the lines that come from years of facial movement, restore some youthful volume in areas that have lost it, improve the quality of your skin, and all around, get you to look like you, on your best day. It’s when practitioner and patient lose the path of a natural result and aim for unrealistic 20 years younger that we end up with horrifying results. I’ll be writing about ‘when treatments go bad’ in a few issues time, but only after I’ve introduced you to the wonderful world of dermal fillers in my next issue. Have a great start to your summer. Wear sunscreen daily, even in Scotland. Stay off the sunbeds. See you all in the next issue where we will be answering some of the questions you’ve sent in. If you have a question for Dr Nestor about wrinkle relaxing treatments, dermal fillers, skin health, how to responsibly provide treatments by a Doctor, Nurse or dentist in your place of work, or anything else in Cosmetic Medicine send him an e-mail to the address below.

Feel summer beautiful ANTONIA MARICONDA GIVES HER TOP TIPS ON HOW SKINADE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE THE PERFECT HOLIDAY BODY! Hair Make sure you wear either a hat or a scarf as this will

protect your hair from the damaging effects of harsh sunlight. Nourishment from Skinade will further protect the hair from environmental damage and any harm that is caused by the heat from styling tools such as straighteners etc.

Face The delicate skin on the face requires extra

protection and care during the summer months. In addition to the vital daily application of SPF, it’s important to protect the eye area with good quality sun glasses and wearing a hat will offer valuable protection to the face. Drinking Skinade will also boost the body’s natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid which will in turn improve the way the skin looks and feels in as little as 30 days.

Legs Cellulite is the bane of many women’s lives but even

if you have it it’s still possible to get your legs looking beach gorgeous... Improving the circulation through exercise is always a good idea - exfoliating and using body brushes and anti-cellulite creams will also help.

Nutrition Good nutrition is especially important during

the summer months and a light Mediterranean diet, which is largely based on vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, cereal grains, olive oil and fish, is immensely beneficial. Skinade added to smoothies is always a great way to start the day with a nutritional boost, and herbal tea will keep you hydrated and give you some much needed antioxidants.

Hydration Hydration is the key to an amazing body

inside and out as every system in your body depends on water. Make sure you get the recommended 8 to 12 cups of fluid a day, but, due to increased sweating that often occurs in the summer months, more may be necessary. This will help keep your energy levels high and your skin and hair glowing.

Skinade is an innovation in skincare as it works from the inside out by giving your skin the nutritional boost it needs to look and feel its best. It helps trigger your body’s own collagen production and regulate moisture levels. It tastes delicious with natural flavours of peach and mangosteen so there’s no excuse not to add this to your daily skincare routine just in time for summer! Tel. 0845 1300205 www.skinade.com

Festival season is music to salon owners’ ears ITS FESTIVAL SEASON & COACHELLA - KNOWN TO MANY AS THE FASHION FESTIVAL HAS JUST CLOSED ITS GATES FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR. Words Lorena Cozzari Hair Neil Barton Photography Richard Miles Make-up Sarah Jagger Styling Bernard Connelly Products Goldwell

hile some will be desperate to catch the hottest bands and spot the next-big-thing, others know that Coachella is where the year’s summer fashion trends are set. Although not exactly a fan of trudging through mud in a Scottish field to have beer thrown over me, I admit I would fly directly to California in a heartbeat, to experience the atmosphere at the most talked about festival in the world. A wave of pictures surf through the internet and like wild fire, a movement has started; brightly coloured hair, braided hair, stiletto and negative space nails, henna tattoos and luxe tattoo transfers are everywhere you look on social media this festival season. Celebrities and non-celebrities filled the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California this year and the stars’ hair colour and fashion sense hits the headlines before the music. As salon owners, the opportunity to view hair and nail fads from festivals via social media is key to staying ahead of the game. You get first look at what’s going to sweep the nation this year and in turn, instant access to what many clients will

ask for when they sit in your chair. That means this year, you could find your regulars walking into the salon and requesting mermaid turquoise hair – as seen on Kylie Jenner – and you, as their stylist extraordinaire will be ready to master the perfect tone. Or you can at least advise them to purchase a wig, as we feel Ms Jenner may have done... Either way, coloured hair is once again the must-have style and seeing so many celebrities rock diverse, bold shades means we aren’t going to see requests for candyfloss pink and grey disappear from the salons any time soon. Kylie was not the only one keen to stay ahead of the rest when it came to colour! Eugenie Grey was also seen rocking turquoise, actress Julianne Hough flaunted her pretty in pink roughed-up bob and British fashion model, Jourdan Dunn opted for three separate colours in three different days; looking fabulous with violet curls, straight smurf blue and thirdly, straight silvery grey hair. he exceptionally talented, Neil Barton won a place on the Goldwell International Color Zoom Creative Team in 2012 and was finalised for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Awards in 2014. Opening his first Edinburgh salon in 2007, Neil Barton Hairdressing is now seen as the number one colour destination in the Scottish capital. Neil travels the world as Goldwell Master and Professional Trainer; taking inspiration from everywhere he goes, Neil’s stunning photographic collections have been featured in major publications all over the world. Neil features a diverse range of colour techniques in all of his collections, from block panels to flashes of vibrant colour, adding a dramatic and unique edge to his work – making him a true colour expert. With an exciting salon revamp and an ambitious itinerary of seminars and photo shoots across Europe and America planned, 2015 is set to take Neil’s standing within the hairdressing industry to the next level. “Scotland is very much at the fore-front of fashion when it comes to hair. When I walk down the streets of Edinburgh I see that there are no boundaries when it comes to hair, especially colour,” Neil said.

Colour, colour, colour is everywhere this year and even Chris Brown was spotted with multi-coloured hair at the famous festival. Yes salon friends, get buying up the rainbow and prepare yourself for the whirlwind of colours set to take over the hairdressing world. Your braid game will also need to be strong as fishtail braids, braided buns and French plaits are also hot at the moment. At Coachella, Kate Bosworth sported a thin braid which ran from the top of her forehead to her neck in the centre of her scalp, while Katy Perry roared ahead with a halo braid surrounding her pretty face. Nails are big news for festival season too, with Instagram awash with stiletto nails at Coachella. The fest was home to a multitude of ‘negative space’ nails and I’m sure that will be hands down a winner for those looking to emulate the festival look. Add to that luxe tattoo transfers, with famous faces including Millie Mackintosh and Alessandra Ambrosio showing off the gold, silver and bronze temporary tattoos and Gigi Hadid organised crystal stickers across her forehead and it looks like salons are going to be kept very busy with the funky festival trends over the coming months. We can help our clients get the look, shame we can’t style the weather.

Summer Skin

It’s time to grin & bare it Words Lorena Cozzari

A

fter a long, cold winter, your body has been wrapped up and confined without being exposed to fresh air and vitamin D from the sun – which is important for healthy bones. Your skin is fed up with being sheltered from the elements and natural vitamins in the environment, so it is time to give your body the TLC it deserves; it’s time to give your skin some loving. With bikinis and short shorts staring at us from every high street window, it is inevitable that people will begin to expose themselves to the sun’s rays (if we ever get some in Scotland) and that means moisturising and protecting our bodies is key. Summer is great for giving us the chance to benefit from the natural vitamins the sun gives off, but always remember to be cautious and wear sunscreen – this is vital. You know what happens when us peely-wally Scots forget. Nobody loves a lobster. Exfoliating skin during the summer is a must to rid the dryness and the dull appearance from winter, whilst helping deliver a healthy glow. Keeping your skin nourished is also a necessity in the heat, to avoid it drying or burning. Advise clients to moisturise and if they are keen to get the pins out, encourage them to use a moisturiser which doubles up as a gradual tan. At Salon NV, we all fake it! So get ready for the influx of people through your salon doors, relying on you to get ensure their skin is summer ready. Tans, moisturisers featuring SPFs at the ready: the heat is on. CREATIVE EXCELLENCE FELLOWSHIP FOR BRITISH HAIRDRESSING Bruno Marc became a member of the Fellowship fifteen years ago and has recently become President. His enthusiasm, expertise and drive makes him the perfect choice to encourage members to be the very best they can be and to keep the objectives of the Fellowship alive.

W

hen we asked what he would bring to this admired role, he said, “I will bring my personality and keep it real. I am a good listener with strong values in every way of life and I am looking forward to continuing to work alongside such talented individuals.” The Fellowship for British Hairdressing was founded in 1946 as the Fellowship of Hair Artists of Great Britain with the aim to maintain traditional skills and values while encouraging innovative ideas. As the years have gone by, the Fellowship has only grown bigger in stature; known extensively through the industry with the focus on promoting creative quality shows, education and trends. The extensive membership list includes some of the biggest names in the industry, with Patrons of Honour and Past Presidents including: Trevor Sorbie MBE, Errol Douglas MBE, and Beverley C MBE. We had the honour of asking Bruno a few questions about what inspires him, why he chose to be in this industry, and what the highlight of his career has been so far. Bruno was kind enough to answer our questions to help us find out a little more about the Fellowship’s new President. “My father was a hairdresser and I went into the business through him and I loved it straight away. Once I was in the salon and felt the buzz I knew this was the right industry for me,” Bruno said when asked why he wanted to get involved in the hairdressing industry. “It’s such a creative industry and I have never believed a pair of scissors would open so many doors for me. I became a member through the introduction from Stephen Mesias and Brian Willoughbly to the amazing Ann Herman. I started with Members Night, where I started mixing with so many iconic hairdressers and I met the one and only Terry Calvert who was The President at the time. He gave The Vice Presidency role to me and I became The Project Leader of The F.A.M.E. Team. It really has been a journey and a key part of my involvement in the industry and where I am now.” Bruno has worked very hard to get where he is today and that hard work has definitely paid off through all his success. The Fellowship for British Hairdressing is a non-profit organisation that aims to be a positive voice for quality within professional hairdressing. The lead Council members - including the President, Vice-President, Chairman and Vice-Chairman plus various members of the subcommittee, all work in these areas unpaid.

These altruistic members work for the sole purpose of helping the industry grow and to encourage stylists to be the best they can be. The Fellowship represents and promotes quality, aiming to attract the top 10% of stylists and salons in the UK. To become a member - other than the need to be a professional hairdresser - you have to be under-going quality training and you must want to strive to be professional and ethical. You must be committed to the Fellowship and its ideals and interested in improving your existing skills. Your

membership, along with your knowledge and expertise will help shape the future generation of hairdressers – becoming the most exciting, creative and visionary industry in the world. The Fellowship offers limitless help and support in what will expand your business further and help you understand what is best for you and your business. Also, workshops and training are given for you and your team with strong advice to bring out the best of your ability. “The Fellowship for British Hairdressing is the heart beat of our industry, and it doesn’t matter what brand or

salon you are from, you are part of the bigger picture in The Fellowship family,” Ashleigh Hodges, Project X Project Leader, said. “It helped launch my career through The F.A.M.E. Team and it has provided me with education through workshops and masterclasses that have supported my passion and The Team at Flame Hair Studios. I have met and worked with some top names who support and nurture the new generation. I love being a part of The Fellowship and I am so proud to be a Project Leader.” Bruno has been given the role of Presidency due to his hard work and dedication and feels it benefits you to become a member of the Fellowship. “I joined like everyone else as a member and it has helped me grow my salon Artistic Team who now travel the world. Two of my team have been in The F.A.M.E. Team, three have been in Project X and I have also had my team in ClubStar. The Fellowship offers the opportunities to develop their skills and being able to mix with the best in the industry.”

Through groups such as the F.A.M.E. Team, ClubStar, Project X and Colour Project, the Fellowship strive to support the talented, creative young people of the future wanting to advance and make a mark in the industry. The Fellowship caters to the remarkable young hairdressers that wish to extend their knowledge and skills between the ages of 16-25, through the ClubStar membership programme. This programme supports the pursuit of improved standards and NVQ/ SVQ education to broaden known knowledge and skills. It gives members an opportunity to meet others in the industry, share ideas and develop creativity, while engaging within events, competitions and educational workshops. The Colour Project is an action-packed annual course that gives access to many top Fellowship colourists. They provide an up-close and personal seminar, followed with hands-on masterclasses, offering tips and advice to take your colouring skills to new levels. Alongside

these educational events is a photoshoot that showcases your newly acquired skills - a must for all rising, creative colourists. The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence - F.A.M.E. - is an annual programme created to nurture, encourage and promote an elite group of talented young hairdressers. Offering unique exposure and a possible platform for future stardom, the F.A.M.E. Team is the UK hairdressing industry’s original, independent launch platform for young creative stylists. Project X is another structured course for members and is described as the ultimate finishing school for hairdressers. This programme is an educational course designed to open the eyes of its participants to the varied aspects of professional hairdressing. Featuring a historical perspective, photographic work, session styling, PR awareness and many other associated areas, Project X draws on the Fellowship’s spectacular and unique pool of members to propel participants into an exciting new world of opportunities. No matter if you work in this industry or any other, you will be inspired by something or someone and Bruno gave us an insight to what inspires him. “I love working with my salon Artistic Team and the moment you create something new and you step back and think that has the WOW Factor! I still have the same buzz as when I first walked into a salon.” I believe a person’s favourite book says a lot about them and when asked what his was, Bruno told us, “The Monk who sold his Ferrari. It is about a jet setting guy who lived for the materialistic things. The loss of his daughter and family and friends gave him the realisation what was actually important in life.” This is a great way to understand a person. For the people that don’t know Bruno, this book gives a little more of an understanding of who he is. Uninterested in the materialistic things, he keeps the importance of life close to him, like his family and friends. Bruno has been in this industry since he was a teenager and throughout his career, he has won a number of awards, including British Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year in 2012. Opening his first Marc Antoni shop when he was just nineteen and growing into one of the industries more prestigious hairdressers, calls for a number of highlights, “At The British Hairdressing Awards one of my team, Dan Spiller, won British Newcomer in 2010 which was a fantastic moment. Another career highlight was when I won Southern Hairdresser of The Year in 2007, 2011 and 2014, which took me into The British Hairdresser Hall of Fame. I can’t also forget the moment in 2012 that I was announced as The Fellowship British Hairdresser of The Year. The room stood for me and I struggled to get my words out as it was then I realised what I had achieved in the industry and the appreciation the amazing industry professionals had for me. It was humbling.” For more information, or if you would like to become a member of the Fellowship follow this link. http://www.fellowshiphair.com

Interview

One of the most recognisable and admired names in hairdressing, it was a real honour for SalonNV to speak to the legend that is Charlie Miller as he celebrates being in the industry 50 years.

C

harlie has five salons in Edinburgh, each headed up by a brilliant manager and boasting a strong team of creative, caring stylists who ooze passion for what they do and the family they work for. Charlie said: “Our latest salon is in Holy Corner, Morningside. We always love working on the design when opening a new salon and it’s with great success that my wife Janet and I have handed that area over to Joshua, Jason & India. It’s great to see the next generation making such a beautiful impact. Each salon has something new in its look. They are a great enjoyment. Charlie always knew he was either going to be

a drummer or hairdresser and thankfully for the heads in the capital, he chose the latter – a job he has dubbed a “character developing career.” Charlie’s hairdressing empire has grown into a family affair and he said: “I’m proud that my family have such a deep personal place in the continued success of the salons. The business is 50 years old this year and with huge credit to my sons Joshua and Jason, who are joint MD’s, together with Jason’s wife, India, and Ian Blyth (our longterm family friend of 40+ years). Jason & India, who are Artistic Directors, also teach globally and together with Joshua they continue to follow successfully in my footsteps.”

Charlie Miller

He continued: “I could say so much about them but don’t have enough space... They share the same values and the same vision and deliver it with the same care, and bring new passion and inspiration that I have done for the last 50 years. I am grateful for their visionary talent, trust, skills, love and support – they and their teams are the future and Janet and I are completed by them.” There may be many people involved in the business, but what does the man himself use when it comes to ensuring he keeps his clients ahead of the rest? “My favourite products are L’Oréal’s Kerastase range and Shu Uemura. They are both fabulous and there’s something for everyone in these ranges. “The tools of my profession are my Joewell Scissors, comb, vent brush and hairdryer.” Charlie describes the hairdressing scene in Edinburgh as “progressive” and noted that “Scotland has made a great contribution to world hairdressing”. Within his own salons, Charlie attracts clients who are fashion conscious and people who like classic, beautiful cuts and colour. He said: “Some of our clients have been coming to see me for over 50 years. They bring their children and grandchildren. They are the next generation of Charlie Miller clients.” With such an incredible career under his belt, it’s difficult to narrow down Charlie’s highlights but he was keen to stress that the development of his Stylists and Juniors is something he is extremely proud of, as he wants to ensure the Charlie Miller name continues to be synonymous with quality. Charlie and his team have also travelled the world with hairdressing seminars and shows and he is extremely proud of their involvement with Teenage Cancer Trust, which has seen them establish a hand-selected group of hairdressers throughout the UK to provide real hair wigs to young people affected by cancer. He also enjoys looking after more than his fair share of famous faces! “Oh! And I did the first and only haircut at the North Pole!” What a cool claim to fame! Charlie added: “But it’s always the present moment that matters most....the next stop for our Artistic Team is Berlin, Portugal and Australia again.” Throughout his career, Charlie has been recognised with countless awards, receiving entry into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame, along with Jason and India. He said: “It’s a special thing that 3 members of the same family have achieved this.” There’s also the small matter of the fact he was awarded an OBE for Services to Hairdressing by HM the Queen in 2012. Although he is delighted to have such recognition, Charlie said: “The salons which I founded with my wife, Janet, are without question my greatest achievements. This, combined with the teams of wonderfully gifted hairdressers who focus the business on style and artistic quality and looking after people, remain the core strength and success of our business today. The consistency of still loving doing what I do after 50 years and contributing to the culture in Edinburgh is something special.”

CRITICAL COMMUNICATION LIZ McKEON, HAIR & BEAUTY BUSINESS EXPERT

LIZ MCKEON IS A SUCCESSFUL AUTHOR, KEY NOTE SPEAKER, BUSINESS COACH AND TRAINER, SPECIALISING IN THE HAIR, BEAUTY & SPA SECTOR. Meetings are vital to the successful running of a salon. Resolve to run them in a time effective manner. Generally there are five types of meetings, so decide which type of meeting you require:

A briefing meeting is called by the salon manager to direct the team to undertake particular tasks. It is characterised by giving instructions and information/clearing up misunderstandings and integrating ideas. An advisory meeting is called for the exchange of information. It is not a decision-making meeting, instead it is about seeking advice about a problem/informing staff about ideas and listening to views. A council meeting is held between people of equal standing, for example salon partners, who have some professional knowledge or skill to contribute to the matter in hand. Decisions are made by consensus, accountability lies with the group and differences are resolved by talking through them.

A committee meeting is when representatives from various groups meet on a roughly equal footing to make decisions on matters of common concern. There is a sense of authority, differences are resolved by voting and compromises are common.

A negotiating meeting is also one in which representatives of different interests meet, but decisions are made on a bargaining basis than by voting, each side seeking to achieve the best terms for themselves.

Managing a Meeting

Become cost conscious about meetings. Check the meeting is necessary, spend time planning and work out the agenda carefully, allotting time for each item. Clear, concise and definite minutes/notes are necessary. If possible it is always a good idea to start with a positive. It might be just short thanks for attending, but this will smooth the way for results. Watch body language. Are you sufficiently aware of non-verbal communication as an indicator of an underlying problem? If you are out of touch with your staff you can’t communicate with them. Sharpen your communication skills. Communication is the lifeblood of all business relations and there is always room for improvement. Managers who enjoy a measure of success are usually excellent communicators. With good communication we build relationships of trust with staff and colleagues, which you need if you are to run regular, effective and productive meetings.

Be Prepared

Careful preparation is the secret of productive meetings. It is essential to be clear

about the objective of the proposed meeting, asking yourself, what is the desired outcome? There are four practical steps to take for meeting preparation: 1. Determine the purpose of the meeting, for example to engage on joint consultation or to resolve unsolved problems. 2. Explore the subject. Collect facts and information, identify the main topics to be discussed.

3. Outline the discussion, set the final objective and consider immediate goals. Frame questions to develop discussion, plan the introduction and prepare a timetable for the meeting. 4. Have everything ready and prepare necessary materials, such as flip charts.

Make Meetings Effective

Aim – Outline the purpose clearly. State any problems/situations and establish the tasks of the meeting. Guide – Ensure effective discussion. Introduce topics for discussion, draw out options, viewpoints and experiences. Develop group interest and involvement.

Formalise – Establish conclusions. Recognise degrees of feelings and opinions. Summarise points of agreement and disagreement. State immediate conclusions as they are reached. Check understanding and acceptance.

Act – Gain acceptance and commitment. Summarise and state conclusions clearly, gain commitment to action plans, state responsibility for action and make sure that everybody understands. Start and finish on time. Feedback – Make the best use of it. During your staff meeting you may have to give or receive feedback, and not all feedback is as welcoming as praise. Use your judgement. Remember that any form of truth about yourself – about how you are coming over to others, is valuable. It gives you options, for it is well within your power to change your attitude. If you are on the receiving end of constructive criticism, remain calm and list, don’t find fault with the criticising person, don’t manipulate the person, don’t change the subject or name an ulterior motive of the appraiser and give the impression that you understand the point. Be open to feedback, whether or not you accept it is another issue.

Follow-up with action

Good follow-up is just as important as the meeting itself. Announce the purpose of the meeting at the beginning. Summarise at the end, thank the participants, list the work assignments decided during the meeting, specify who is responsible and the deadlines for completion.

PROMOTE YOUR SALON ONLINE

The majority of Salons have invested in a website to promote their business, but most may be unimpressed by the income it generates. I hear every day from Salon owners “the website is not really working for us,” and the reasons are nearly always the same.

B

efore I describe how to transform your Salon website into a powerful generator of new clients, the 1st step is understanding what it can do your for your business. These are the number of visitors in the 1st four months to a new salon website that we recently launched. It was a replacement for an old site that was not performing well and is for a salon with 1 outlet and 8 stylists. Month 1, 859 visitors Month 2, 2009 visitors Month 3, 2308 visitors Month 4, 3842 visitors A 400% increase in 4 months, with more than 120 people every day visiting their website. So how do we massively boost your web visitors very quickly? The answer is Google search pages.

For this salon, over 80% of the website visitors arrived via a Google search, so by the 4th month that is over 3,000 people in one month searching for Salon services in their area. We all use Google every day to search for goods and services, whether it’s a plumber or a new car, and

Phil Evans, Managing Director of Salon Guru the number of people searching for a salon in any town or city is staggering. For example, the phrase “Hair Salon Aberdeen” was searched 9,700 times in 1 month on Google, and even the very specific phrase “hair salons in Glasgow city centre” had 812 searches. These are all potential new clients looking for a Salon in your area and possibly visiting your website. So why does your website not get that number of visitors and your salon lots of new clients? The problem with most Salon website is their Google Rank i.e. how far down the list of results they appear for any phrase. Try googling Hair Colour Aberdeen and our website for James Dun’s House is numbers 1 & 2, likewise if you search Best Hair Salon Glasgow James Dun’s House are number 1 in the results (at the time of writing). To see the results for another client, search for any hair phrase in Liverpool and Voodou are likely to be in the top 3 every time. When you have had a great website for a number of years (like James Dun’s House & Voodou) you can hope for the many 1000’s of visitors each month that

they attract. Never dismiss the fact that these website visitors should become salon visitors that generate considerable income. Knowing that a great website, with very high Google rank, is what drives hundreds of new clients to your website, try some searches for keywords in your area and measure your results. Use phrases like - top hair salon, hair salon, hair colour, highlights, hairdresser, top salon, ombre hair colour, Spring hair colour. If you are ranked in the top 3 for all phrases then you are doing very well, but if you are number 5, 10 or even off the first page, you can expect a tiny fraction of the visitors as the top 3 slots get 80% of all clicks. If you recognise that Google can bring hundreds of new clients, and that your rank for all hair phrases is the key to your success, then the next question is “how do I get my Salon ranked number 1 on Google?” Creating a website that is incredibly wellranked on Google is all about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and you have probably been approached many times by “SEO Experts“ who promise quick and easy fixes. But the reality is that the right design and build of your website is the only way to get a very high permanent Google rank, and it must be based on knowledge of the search phrases for the Hairdressing industry. I hope I have persuaded you that a highly ranked Salon website is the best way to attract new clients and the numbers speak for themselves. Salon Websites are powerful engines for creating new Salon income and interacting with potential clients when they are actively searching for a hair salon. There is no doubt that your busy salon website will generate a busy, buzzing salon.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VISITING TRADE SHOWS

At Salon Evolution, we are big believers in being proactive in training and making sure that investing in staff is at the forefront of business aims.

Steven Gunnip, Director of Salon Evolution, discusses the importance of visiting trade shows.

W

e most definitely practice what we preach in ensuring that our team consistently works in a happy environment, while also frequently organising away days and external training opportunities to keep staff inspired, and with a regularly renewed enthusiasm for their work. In the same way, for beauty and hair businesses, using time both in and out of the salon to create good synergy between stylists will ensure that everybody remains happy. One of the best ways that this can be achieved is through out-of-salon activities, such as trade shows; anything that encourages your staff to increase their learning and remain motivated about their trade can only be a good thing. Having a driven team is paramount to your salon success. If they don’t believe in the brand or think that the relationship is one-sided they will become dispirited. By showing staff that you are serious about investing in them, want them to do well and are keen to advance them and their skills, they will give back to the business ten-fold. Trade shows, such as the recent Scottish Hair and Beauty Show, which was held in Edinburgh in April, assist with advancing your staff ’s knowledge of products or treatments, allow them to interact and network with other beauty professionals and likeminded people, introduce them to new industry innovations, provide information on potential further education and training opportunities. Devoting your time and energy to advancing your team, and making sure they are up-to-date on all of the latest industry happenings, will ensure they feel a valued part of the business and motivated to do the best job possible, as well as excited about any upcoming in-salon treatments or advances. The more staff feel enthused and motivated about the company and their work, the more productive they will be. Remember that, without your salon team, your business cannot function so they have to be happy. If you’re on a tight budget, one of the best things about trade shows from a cost perspective is that tickets are often free-of-charge if you register in advance and any money that you do spend will be minimal and returned again and again from staff productivity. Visiting a trade show can also be beneficial from a customer point-of-view,

exposing them to the latest innovations and trends and positioning your staff members as experts in their field. Clients will look to their therapist or stylist for the latest knowledge and will be able to gain the inside scoop on any exciting new treatments, making them feel as though they are ‘in the know’. Being able to provide certain products or services before other salons in the vicinity is another perk, as clients will relish visiting a salon that is streets ahead of the competition, and will feel special knowing that they are one of the first to try out your new offerings. It’s clear that the benefits of visiting trade shows are numerous, however once you’re back in the salon, back to back appointments and the pressures of running a business can mean the likeminded people you met can be forgotten about if connections aren’t followed up soon after returning. It’s important to remember that every business person you speak to and connect with can be of potential benefit to your business, even if it’s not in the immediate future. In this everevolving industry, change can happen in an instant, so making the effort to get in touch with all of the people who took the time to talk to you at a trade show will ensure you’re well-placed for the future, as you never know when you may need a company or individual’s services, or vice versa. Trade shows are often one of the only places where you have the time and opportunity to meet with so many people from the same industry. It’s always useful to be up-to-date with the goings-on in the sector in which you work; from the latest developments, products and training. The wider your contact base, the more likely it is that you will be the first to hear about important news. Industry professionals and experts you meet can also introduce new business avenues that you might not have previously thought of, which can hugely benefit your salon or staff. It’s never too early to plan ahead and the next Scottish Hair and Beauty Show will be at the RHC in Edinburgh on 24 and 25 April 2016. So put the date in your diary, tell your staff and register for your tickets – your salon business, clients and team will thank you for it!

“It’s important to remember that every businessperson you speak to and connect with can be of potential benefit to your business, even if it’s not in the immediate future”

t goes without saying that your clients come FIRST and if they are happy, they will continue visiting your salon, in turn making more money for your business. One very effective way of expanding client loyalty are schemes such as Gift Vouchers, Loyalty Points and ‘Recommend a Friend’. Regular and effective marketing can have a real impact on client retention, improving client spend and attracting new customers helping you to enjoy better return rates. Gift vouchers are a very effective way of marketing, encourage your existing clients to buy these for a friend or loved one as a way of introducing new business to your salon or spa. When doing this you could also include your list of services and prices to encourage them to get their appointment booked. Rewarding your existing customers for doing so means you are more likely to retain them. W: www.salongenius.com

Recommend a friend marketing campaigns are very effective, if a friend has recommended a particular product or service, you are more likely to trust in what they say and try it out. Giving your existing clients loyalty points or cash incentives and rewards for recommending a friend means you are more likely to also keep your existing clients. Loyalty points are really beneficial to your business as these can be rewarded for the activities mentioned above and it is a win-win situation. The existing clients can build up points to gain rewards and the salon may gain potential new clients in the process! All these marketing initiatives can be promoted to your customers with Salongenius automated marketing – Using your specified criteria to send out your marketing messages via text messaging or email. Increase retail sales, promote new services, introduce new clients and retain existing customers.

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY USE TIME IN BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS

Steven Gunnip, Director of Salon Evolution, discusses how time can be effectively used in between salon appointments

I

n the hair and beauty industry, the training required to ensure a premium quality service is extensive, so any spare time that stylists or beauty therapists have should be spent on honing fundamental aspects of their trade. Salon professionals should use quiet periods between appointments to perfect their skills and knowledge, so that they are able to provide different services and treatments to individual clients to the best of their ability. This will ensure that every time they see a client, the experience and customer service they deliver is as near to perfect as possible and the client leaves having had an enjoyable time, thrilled with the end results, and knowing it was money well spent. In a competitive marketplace, every consumer has a choice as to where they go to receive beauty treatments and hair services, so salon staff should take time to practice their skills at every opportunity to ensure that clients return to them and recommend them to others; after-all, word-of-mouth is still the most effective way to build a successful business. I advise beauty and hair professionals to get into the habit of planning ahead. Re-visit how you approach each day and how you prepare your room, trolly or work station ahead of a busy day. Where have you experienced challenges in the past that may have resulted in unwanted stress or caused you to fall behind? Practices such as keeping detailed client notes and reviewing them the day before they come in, helps ensure the client experience is smooth and effortless. Any spare time can also be used to think about the client experience, making sure staff are ready to deliver an exceptional service from beginning to end, whether that’s through exemplary customer service skills or ensuring a pleasant environment for the client. Retaining a high percentage of new clients is a skill that needs to be nurtured. It’s also important to continually research to ensure you are always one step ahead; read trade magazines, such as SalonNV, to gather new ideas and look for current trends. You are likely to come across a wealth of inspiration, whether that’s a new up-do you’d like to try out, or a nail art design that you could add to your treatment menu. Practice, practice, practice and don’t become complacent; if you strive to continually recharge your skills and try something new, clients will appreciate your knowledge and look to you as the person in the know for all the recent as well as forthcoming trends. Look out for the latest industry news too, as trade publications carry a vast array of information on product ranges that may be suitable for the salon, new

“Ultimately, hair and beauty businesses should make the most of any ‘dead’ time in the salon using a two-tier approach: perfecting their skills and knowledge through practice and research, and dedicating time to bringing clients into the salon” launches, and trade shows, that could be very beneficial. Many top salon brands offer refresher courses; so use any down time to investigate what is available to you and your staff from the brands you are affiliated with. For a nominal fee, this training can brush up your skills and introduce you to new techniques and styles. When you’re delivering a particular treatment, day in and day out, it can become easy to think you are doing everything as carefully and procedurally as when you first started out. A refresher course can do just that – refresh your knowledge to ensure that any bad habits that have developed are eradicated. A stylist or beauty therapist could be the best in the business, but if their target market doesn’t know how good their skills, customer service and attention to detail is, they will not get the clients they deserve. Downtime within a business is a resource that needs to be put to good use if the salon is going to be run efficiently, so a proportion of quiet time in the salon should be utilised in finding ways of attracting new clients to the front door. This is something Salon Evolution has helped hundreds of salons around the country perfect. Spending money on this shouldn’t be needed – use

the time and energy you have in the salon to promote your business. Working in a creative industry, salon professionals are ideally placed to use their artistic mindset to come up with innovative solutions, and create fun promotions, to market their business to potential and existing customers. Particularly capitalise on any seasonal holidays, such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas; and one-off special events, such as royal celebrations. Use salon down time to look ahead in the calendar: what occasions, notable days and holidays are coming up that you could create offers or events for? Planning for this is key, as ordering stock, organising materials, briefing staff, promoting to customers, and getting the salon ready, can take months of solid preparation, so any quiet periods are the perfect time to put the wheels into motion. Ultimately, hair and beauty businesses should make the most of any ‘dead’ time in the salon using a two-tier approach: perfecting their skills and knowledge through practice and research, and dedicating time to bringing clients into the salon. Using this time wisely will ensure you and your staff will reap the rewards.

o get into the summer spirit, I like to have nails to match – bright colours and nail art with wave like designs or sunsets give off the perfect sunshine vibe. Designed nails are always in style, whether you flash vibrant colours, wear gel, jewels or tend to stick with neutrals. You will know your regular clients and their preferred styles, but it is helpful to explore different techniques and ensure you are up-to-date with the trends to offer customers a wider option. New York and London Fashion Week saw runway models flaunt spring/summer nail trends that soon, we will all be sporting. Fashion Week is one of the main events where new trends and styles are spotted and set, which in turn set the world on a train through a beauty frenzy. This year at Fashion week, Sally Hansen manicurist, Tracylee, created the cuticleonly style by painting the entire nail and then removing the polish.

This innovative way of painting nails could soon be the new ‘must have’ for women who prefer a quick and quirky look. No matter the length of the nail, this style will suit all shapes and whether you like darker, brighter or neutral colours; the cuticle-only style is adaptable to your preference and won’t be hard to handle in the sun and sea. Nails have always been a way for women to express their style; some favour stiletto nails, other prefer all black, some love floral and nail art and recently, the latest fad is for negative space nails, as seen, and mentioned in our Coachella article. This trend can be styled to suit a specific need - people are able to choose which colours they desire and where they want the negative space to be on their nail; giving them an original creative look. Summer is the time to be creative, bold and add a splash of colour into your life and we hand it to you, nail artists, as we know you have your finger on the pulse.

The Great British Barber Bash comes north

ring on the beards: great news for the barbering community in Scotland as it has been announced that the Great British Barber Bash is coming north of the border for the first time ever. Fresh from enjoying overwhelming success in April, when the show took place in Southport, the Bash will now take place in the cutting edge venue, Drygate, in Glasgow’s east end. As one of the UK’s most unique venues, the experimental microbrewery, Drygate, provides the perfect backdrop for an afternoon and evening, blending barbering education and a congregation of like-minded professionals. Showcasing their work will be one third of the B.O.M.B squad, Alan Finlay, Hard Grind from Dundee, Glasgow’s Safe Hands and the Rebel Rebel team ft. Richie Martin, Manchester’s Ruger Barber plus breakthrough act, Davie the Barber. Founder of the event, Garry Spencer told Salon NV: “The whole idea behind the event is that it’s a Sunday afternoon for people to get together and see great things happen on stage. “It’s the perfect chance for barbers to socialise with like minded people in an informal atmosphere.” He added: “Scotland is ready for it and what we want to do is bring some really cool educational and motivational demonstrations, not just for barbers, but also for people interested in learning more about the

industry and perhaps expanding the techniques within their salons.” Garry was keen to stress that this is not a trade show. “It is the first time a show like this has been in Scotland in a long time and there is a massive buzz about it. People want to be a part of it.” And if the interest in this Bash is anything to go by, Garry thinks it won’t be long before the lads are back in Scotland, possibly bringing their skills and expertise to another city. The Southport show was a sellout, with people coming from all over the country to attend – Team NV can vouch for that one. It has had excellent write-ups in numerous hairdressing magazines and it seems the desire for something celebrating, showcasing and talking about the future of barbering has never been stronger, that’s why we can’t wait to see the show unfold in Glasgow. Tickets can now be purchased from www.greatbritishbarberbash.co.uk for what promises to be one of the most exciting barbering events to grace Scottish soil this year. We’ll see you on July 26...

Davie the Barber

W

ith his brilliant talent in barbering, Davie Walker launched the cool and edgy, Davie the Barber shop two years ago in Paisley. The brick walls, funky wall art of a bearded tattooed barber and talented employee’s amiability, makes it the place to be for a cut and style or tattoo. Last year, Davie decided to open a tattoo studio with Danny McBride - the extremely talented tattoo artist now working alongside Davie, “We had to come up with a game changer and tattooing and barbering has a kind of outlaw style to it. Within about six weeks, Danny had ripped down half my shop because he was so busy,” Davie laughed. When asked who he was inspired by, he knew instantly, “Kenneth Edwards was a big inspiration. He inspired me to be the best I could be. I was working hand in hand with him, as his junior. It was a big step for me and was an honour to stand next to this guy who was an absolute legend.” Davie now takes on his own apprentices to ensure barbering in Scotland is continuously growing with talented individuals. Davie’s selflessness when it comes to training is what makes him want to open a Training Academy. “It’s definitely what I want to do. I enjoy training and think it’s time to give back to the trade.” Scottish barbering is climbing up the industry ladder and Davie said, “It’s the most exciting thing that’s going to happen in a long time with having Garry Spencer creating a buzz in Scotland. It’s even more exciting that he chose us to go in the show. We’ll be going up with Rebel Rebel, who are absolutely massive in the industry.” Check out issue 1 of BarberNV Magazine for our full interview with Davie the Barber.

I have also become a blogger (mrhaircare), amazing considering my ambition almost 40 years ago was to be able to cut hair... that’s in the past now but I can share my thoughts and views about haircuts and hairdressing on my websites. I also develop training materials for salons and product companies, something that gives me a great sense of achievement. And now, I am going to be writing a column for SalonNV, how exciting! The opportunity to share views on all the things relating to Scottish hairdressing in a magazine that is exclusive to Scotland is a brilliant opportunity.

RUSSELL COWIE HAIRDRESSING Russell Cowie is one of the most respected and talented hairdressers in the industry today. He began his training at the age of 16 and quickly saw his scissor skills and determination to succeed take him to the top. INTERVIEW WITH LOREN A COZ Z A RI

R

ussell Cowie Hairdressing works on the basis that to achieve perfection you must be professional, creative, inspirational and meticulous in all you do and it’s these qualities that have afforded the salon a loyal clientele and a host of celebrity clients. SalonNV headed along to meet the man himself in his bright haven of a salon calm in the middle of the buzz of Glasgow’s West End. The venue oozes sophistication and Russell? Well, he was a joy to chat to and it’s clear to see why he is a leader in the field. Taking a step back in time to where it all began, Russell reflected on his time at Glasgow hairdressing institution: Taylor Ferguson. He said: “I’ll tell you a funny story about it – I went to Bellahouston Academy and my best friend’s sister had a shop across the road from the school and I used to go in at lunch time, dinner time and after school, for free, simply because I loved being there. “I was meant to be a joiner when I left school but I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a joiner’ and I called Taylor Ferguson for a job interview and I got it. That was in 1996. I was there for sixteen years, and then I went to Barcelona for a year and came back to Taylor’s for two years.” He may casually slip the mention of Barcelona in there, but his time in Spain is something Russell credits as the ‘best year of my life’. Why? “Russell admits the people and the climate were major factors and that he would love to open a salon in Spain one day. “The sunshine puts everyone in a good mood, every single person, and they are amazing people - much like the Scots.” Back to his Salon on Glasgow’s bustling Dumbarton Road, Russell explained: “I’ve been here for six years. I’ve joined up in partnership with the beauty salon next door in November and it’s benefited the shop greatly. People are going in and then see us next door and coming in here also. It’s a win, win. Totally added a new dimension to the business” Unsurprisingly, Russell cites Taylor Ferguson as the inspiration behind his hairdressing career.

He explained: “I watched an old video when I was at school when I was fourteen and I saw Taylor cutting football players’ hair and I thought, ‘I want to do that. I want to cut their hair.’ “From that moment on that was my inspiration and all I wanted to do was work with Taylor Ferguson.” As with every major city and town, it takes something special for a hairdresser to stand out in Glasgow. Russell’s understanding and use of hair extensions is something he feels helps him stay ahead of the rest. He said: “There are only two people in Scotland that have Platinum with Great Lengths and there are only four in Britain and in Scotland - it’s us and Taylor Ferguson. My salon only has eight seats, while Taylor’s has 44, but I think hair extensions have helped take us to that same level.” While he may be a big success in the salon world, Russell knows how important it is to maintain a work / life balance and he credits enjoying time with his wife and new baby Alistair as being his biggest achievement to date. That’s not to say he isn’t ambitious. On the contrary: Russell has his sights firmly set on opening a salon in Barcelona, while maintaining his hand in the business here. “I’d like to work six months in Spain and six months here. That is my plan in ten years. That and to have another kid. We’ll probably call him Juan.” So he’s obviously a fan of sunnier climates but what does Russell think is going to be big in the hair stakes this summer? “Cheryl Cole has short hair one day, long the next - extensions allow people that flexibility so in my book, they’re always going to be big.” Russell also loves the fact gents are becoming more ambitious when it comes to grooming and he admitted he “just loves doing guys’ hair.” We’re sure there will be plenty of hombres looking forward to a spot of Russell magic but for now, we’re glad to have him in Scotland, adding to our fine array of hairdressing talent.

DOROTA PALICKA, NAIL PERFECT GLOBAL DESIGN EDUCATOR This month we’re celebrating the success of international nail artist, Nail Perfect Global Design Educator and salon owner, Dorota Palicka.

Q

uite a title, but one she more than lives up to when it comes to leading the way in the ever-growing world of nail art. So, how did this 30-year-old lovely claw (sorry), her way to the top of the nail world? Interested in art from a young age, Dorota felt that nails provided the perfect canvas for her to unleash her creative side. Growing up in Poland, she took a nail course, just a month before she came to Scotland. When she made the move, initially Dorota found it difficult to put her skills to use as the language barrier got in the way, but nothing was going to stop this determined lady from nailing it. In 2009, she opened her own business, Kingdom of Nails, and then progressed to running her own nails, tanning and beauty studio. Ibiza Tanning and Beauty salon is in the heart of Fort William, close to the high street, and Dorota attracts fashion conscious customers from all walks of life. She told us: “In Fort William, people like unique, subtle designs. “They look for something to match their personality and lifestyle, but that’s eye-catching enough to stand out.” She added: “They trust our salon so much that most of our client’s wait for our suggestions regarding nail style.” In 2011, Dorota decided to take her work one step further by becoming a nail educator. She explained: “As a Nails Educator I’m a fully qualified lecturer of further education, with extensive industry

experience, which means I can offer my students the very best training available. “The aim of my courses is to provide the highest level of training possible, backed with the best support programme in the nail training industry.” As well as producing training DVD’s Dorota also travels around the globe, teaching the newest techniques on the nail market. Dorota has won numerous awards for her work, including the Best Education Award 2015 Nail Perfect International Training, 1st place boxed nail art Scottish Beauty 2014 and winner of Scottish hair and beauty awards- nail technician of the year 2012. Her work has featured in numerous magazines and she is proud to look back on her catalogue of images and see how far she has come.

“As a Nails Educator I’m a fully qualified lecturer of further education, with extensive industry experience, which means I can offer my students the very best training available”

So what’s next for Dorota and her salon? “My future goal is to expand the salon, with more girls working in the team with us. Also this year, I want to help prepare my team for competitions and achieve even more success. “It makes me proud when someone I taught wins an award. “We are also planning the first International Educator Training course in Glasgow in August, which I can’t wait to be a part of.” For more on Dorota’s work, DVDs and training events, you can visit www.facebook.com/dorotapalickanails and www.nailperfect.net.

THE TRAINING GAME We’re fortunate to work in industries that never stand still, however continual evolution brings with it the need to constantly update your skills and offerings, so that your business can stay ahead of the rest and consistently meet your clients’ ever-evolving needs.

T

raining and Continual Professional Development is essential to any business in the hairdressing and beauty industries, education is something that’s very close to my heart. When I launched the HD Brows brand in 2008, I saw it not just as an opportunity to bring something new to the marketplace, but to also deliver first-class industry training to cement the brand as a leader in what has since become a very busy marketplace. Having this firm foundation has enabled me to steadily build the brand over the last seven years, and with education an integral part of the business, we continue to develop and evolve our educational curriculum to meet our clients’ needs so that they, in turn, can continue to meet theirs. The beauty and hairdressing industries never stand still and neither do we! As a result we continually look at our offerings and in March 2015, added to our educational portfolio with the launch of our Glasgow Academy. Housed on West Regent Street, our state-of-the-art premises is the third we have under the HD Brows umbrella, with sister academies in both Yorkshire and Milton Keynes. We have distributor academies in Edinburgh and Newry, Northern Ireland, ensuring we can cater for everyone throughout the UK and Ireland. Our Glasgow academy was opened following high demand. In February 2015 we had more than 4,800 unique visitors to the HD Brows website from Scottish consumers, proving we have a fantastic following in the region and highlighting the fact that there is a real coterie of brow enthusiasts in the local area and beyond. Opening the new academy has allowed us to cater for the growing number of people looking to perfect their skills in HD Brows, and everyone from graduates through to make-up artists can now enjoy the whole host of education on offer, which includes our two-day course, Virtual Stockist Training, Make-up Conversion Course, Refresher Class, Pro Class, Master Class and Make Up by HD Brows Professional Artistry Courses. As a business owner it’s important

62 | SalonNV Magazine

to never underestimate the value of education and training – it’s vital in terms of your own evolution, but ongoing training is an essential tool to keep your staff driven and motivated, to ensure they feel nurtured and on a journey with a brand that believes they have the potential to be the best they can. Endorse education and you will reap the rewards. People thrive on learning and your business will flourish through an investment in your people. Training is an essential element to growing your work force, be it creative or business, and encourages staff stability and a commitment to your brand; staff retention is key and by educating and motivating you will be doing everything you can to keep a happy and talented team in place. This is why HD Brows educates its Stylists to the highest standards within our five exclusive training academies across the UK. Our elite HD Brows trainers have the combined experience of training more than 4,000 new Stylists over the last five years, and even they undertake Continual Professional Development programmes to ensure they remain at the top of their game. I believe you never stop learning, if you don’t want to learn anything new, you don’t want to evolve and stagnation signals the end of any business. You should look at any training as a valuable investment, so it’s important to invest in a credible training course provider that your clients will recognise, and researching thoroughly from the outset is key. If there is a demand for a certain treatment, ensure you invest in training at the highest level, so your educational expenditure is truly worthwhile. In this arena you really do get what you pay for; cheap courses with a curriculum that is crammed into a short space of time can mean modules and course material aren’t being covered thoroughly enough for you or your staff to offer a premium standard of treatment. Intensive is different to cutting corners, and cheap is no substitute for quality. Make sure you do your homework; ensure the training is the right fit for your business taking your style, brand and

direction into consideration. This is where reputable training providers really come into their own, and with many salons and spas expanding their offerings into the educational arena there has never been a better time to expand your skill set. Researching the educational companies is fundamental to the outcome of your decision, so take your time to choose wisely. Review the results, but most importantly, survey the quality of the educators. Are they award winning? What are their achievements? Decide if you would enrol yourself before you consider enrolling others. On any course, look at the credentials of the trainers, as well as the provider and check the testimonials

Nilam Holmes-Patel, CEO and founder of HD Brows.

“You should look at any training as a valuable investment, so it’s important to invest in a credible training course provider that your clients will recognise, and researching thoroughly from the outset is key”

of students who have already done the course for an unbiased view of what your business can gain from it. Don’t forget to check the finer details too, and ask about the facilities on offer, as well as the trainer to student ratio, to ensure that your staff gets the attention needed to secure their skills. Reputable training courses will usually be split across two days or more, depending on the treatment, and should be a mixture of both theory and practical learning – the devil is in the detail, so it pays to do your research and a good course should be able to provide the complete package. For more in-depth, specific training, business owners should identify the correct person within a team, as certain training comes at a price. Look at the long term of your business and the people best placed to drive it forward; some really do thrive on Continual Professional Development. Once trained, staff can be very influential on the salon floor in sharing their newfound knowledge with other staff. For quality training to be an investment, knowledge has to be shared. The best way to achieve this is to give staff responsibility. Make them

a specialist in their area, encouraging them to inspire and produce a like-minded team. Those with more experience should also charge differently for their services, to set them apart and highlight their expertise (and your investment) to your clientele. If you or your staff has completed training in a new skill, such as brows or lashes, look at offering your existing clients promotions for a limited period to encourage them to give your new service a try. Sampling something new that they might not have considered before is the perfect way to spark excitement and encourage re-bookings. Once you or your staff are fully trained, or have furthered your skills, it is also a great idea to line up model clients so that trained technicians can put into practice what they have learnt as soon as they are back in the salon. This makes sure they offer a great standard of treatment, before charging clients. Education and training really is a long-term commitment in both time and money terms, but knowledge really is power, and investing in the future of both your staff and your business will be a huge bonus in the long term.
