Welcome Happy New Year from everyone at SalonNV! We hope you all had a profitable and prosperous 2017 and the next 12 months are even better. It’s been a fantastic year for us, topped off with us receiving a Salutation award at the Fellowship Luncheon, and it’s all thanks to you readers and to the hair and beauty industry professionals who have helped us put together SalonNV with their expert contributions… but 2018 is going to be even better! We’re starting off the year with a bang! Errol Douglas MBE was awarded the highly prestigious Patron of Honour award by the Fellowship, joining only a select few industry legends to collect the prize. It was great to sit down with him and discuss not only that award but his whole career which has been full of amazing moments. January can often be a difficult month for our industry, so we’ve enlisted a few experts to give you some tips and advice about how to beat the New Year blues and ensure you keep profits up. Start the year off well and will filter

down through the rest of your year. Our star reporter Katie Margereson has been busy as always this month and her chat with Tracey Devine-Smith about balancing being a working mum alongside being an international educator and hairdresser will give inspiration to any of you aspiring to be in her shoes. Katie also caught up with Bernard Connolly for some first class insight into just how fashion stylists help get those collection shots we love to admire looking just right. Hidden Heights Creative Studio is another place where hairdressers go when they want to put together a collection to show off to the world. Their expert team of stylists, photographers, and make-up artists combine to create some truly stunning work and we spoke with them all firsthand on how Hidden Heights allows their creative spark to shine. As always, that’s only the tip of the iceberg of another amazing issue that aims to unlock the secrets of the hair and beauty industry. We’re all so lucky to be a part of it and I feel 2018 will be the best year yet! Enjoy!

Hairdressers and Barbers Unite It was the highlight of the worldwide barbering calendar in 2017, so we’re delighted to announce that BarberSociety Live is opening its doors to women’s hairstylists for the first time in 2018! Previously a barber-only event, the most chilled-out yet educational event in the industry is expanding to two-days when it returns to Amsterdam in April and everyone is welcome to attend the second day. We can expect the usual top quality talent from the barbering world showcasing their skills in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Tickets go on sale in mid-January for the event on April 15 and 16, so keep your eyes peeled across our social media and start saving for a truly breathtaking weekend away.

The Hairdressers’ Charity Bike Ride The Hairdressers’ Charity recent bike ride helped to raise over £10,000 towards helping hairdressers in need. The bike ride, kindly organised by Victor Pajak from Headquarters, took place in Cesanatico (nr Bologna) - the Italian mecca of cycling and home of the legendary Marco Pantani. With a cycling agenda catering for all levels of cycling, 24 riders took part to help raise the funds for the industry charity.

Barrie’s Got Talent The glamour and excitement of awards season spread to Leicester recently, as the entire Barrie Stephen Hair team came together at North Bar & Kitchen to celebrate yet another year of huge successes! This year, Barrie stripped the evening back and made it all about the team. They enjoyed a sit-down meal with plenty of fizz and fun, before the winners for the year were announced. Everyone from Front of House to Graduate Stylist of the Year was celebrated, with 14 awards handed out over the course of the evening. “I wanted the team to have a fantastic party and feel extra special this year,” said Barrie, “they live out the brand every single day being ambassadors for Barrie Stephen Hair and this was a night to celebrate each other and let our hair down.”

Commenting on the new appointments, UK Director at NovaLash, Heather Hughes, said: “We’ve experienced significant growth in the last 12 months and we’re now at a stage where we can extend our NovaLash Team of educators to cater for the surge of new lash artists who want to train with us. We’re excited to have the new recruits on board and look forward to welcoming a new wave of certified NovaLash lash artist over the coming months and years.”

Toni&Guy Mourn Toni Mascolo The hairdressing world is in mourning following the loss of Toni Mascolo, cofounder of Toni&Guy. Toni was the business brains behind the firm, introducing franchising to the firm which now has almost 500 salons in nearly 50 countries. Hairdressing was all Toni knew and the industry will be much poorer in

his absence. An innumerable number of young stylists have been inspired by his influence and the likes of Angelo Seminara, Tony Rizzo, Akin Konizi, and Sally Brooks are among the big names to have spoken about the impact he had on their careers and the industry. Everyone at SalonNV send their best wishes to his family.

Paul Watts From the boy who found his creative flair at just nine years of age to working alongside Lee Stafford and building an impressive portfolio of awards. 2017 has been a busy year for Matakki Ambassador Paul Watts and the ride is far from over. With four salons to run, educating around the world with Redken and Lee Stafford whilst wielding some Serious Metal from his chosen company Matakki Scissors, there’s no stopping Paul in his pursuit to actualise his creative vision. My name is Paul Watts I have been hairdressing for over 11 years and my biggest passion is education. At the age of nine, I would cut and colour the hair of troll dolls you got free in breakfast cereal using permanent markers and kitchen scissors. I identified from this early age that I enjoyed working with hair and always felt I needed to work in an environment where I could express myself creatively. My first business "House of Hair" launched from my parent’s garage. I never anticipated that I would go on to win a number of awards and own four salons. I’ve undertaken a vast amount of training throughout my career to advance my skills and knowledge with brands such as L’Oréal and Matrix and I recognize the importance of continued professional development in my work. I believe that this combined with a positive attitude has been key to my success. I felt such an affinity with teaching that I decided delivering education was for me. Once a day I study something hair related from a variety of sources and I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work with my "Hair Hero" Lee Stafford, who has encouraged me greatly in my ambition. I teach as part of the STAF’s academy assisting to deliver education to the masses as part of

Lee’s team and I’m very proud to be a part of this. I use Matakki Scissors in my work because I believe that they deliver an all-round quality performance in achieving my work and I am proud to be an ambassador for such a quality brand. I have an impressive collection of Matakki Scissors but two of my favorites are my Aku 5.5” scissor, which I find perfect for precision technical haircuts. It is slim line and lightweight giving perfect balance for Sassoon inspired cutting and the Arrow 7” scissor which is incredible for barbering and men’s hairdressing. Its longer blades save time in over comb work and the comfortable offset handle creates a great cutting motion for my back to back appointments reducing fatigue. With the help of my team I’ve set some goals for the coming year and beyond and I’m confident that with the right attitude and the fantastic company’s I collaborate with these will be realised. I love sharing my knowledge and inspiring people in their work whilst continuing to grow as a professional myself and I’m looking forward to the challenges of 2018. Great Lengths Launches its Newest Innovation

Great Lengths is excited to launch its newest innovation, GL Tapes. Renowned for their quality, GL Tapes use the same 100% human hair as Great Lengths’ pre-bonded extensions, and have been gently hand processed and blended to create over 58 different shades. Expanding on their application methods, they include a medical grade, hypo-allergenic and non-toxic tape. The tape is suitable for all hair densities, creating an instantaneous transformation of length, volume and/or colour. With a full head application being able to be applied within one hour, GL tapes are perfect for time conscious clients looking to solve their hair problems. Maintaining GL Tapes is easy! The lightweight tapes are virtually undetectable in the hair and comfortable to wear. With some light attention to regular brushing, washing and styling, the tapes have the potential to last between six and eight weeks before professional maintenance is needed. Professional visits to the salon after the six to eight week period enables clients to have their tape gently removed without damage to their natural hair. This application method can then be re-taped back into the new re-growth area. GL Tapes can be applied up to three times dependant on the client’s attention to the aftercare and maintenance programme/advice, giving the tape a lifespan of over six months. As with their pre-bonded hair, Great Lengths are also welcoming donations of used GL Tapes, from clients and certified stylists which will be sent on to the Little Princess Charity, who use the hair to make real hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair due to cancer and other illnesses. Specialist training is now available for the newly launched GL Tapes. Find out more here: greatlengthshair.co.uk/become-a-certified-stylist/

Celebrating the best of the best at the Fellowship Luncheon The Fellowship Luncheon is one of the hairdressing industry’s favourite events. Every December, famous and familiar faces flock to the beautiful Dorchester Hotel on London’s Park Lane to celebrate those in hairdressing who go above and beyond for the Fellowship, and to present this year’s Fellowship Awards. It was hosted this year for the first time by Chancellor Ken Picton, who brought plenty of humour and character to the role, cracking Welsh jokes and teaching the audience funny Welsh words and phrases. He was joined on stage throughout by President Karine Jackson and Chairman Jo Martin, who Ken affectionately dubbed ‘Ken’s Angels’. Alongside a decadent dinner, including a ‘flaming dragon’ dessert that made it onto many an Instagram post, Fellowship members, sponsors, and council members took the time to recognise the industry’s heroes. Amongst the biggest accolades of the afternoon, was the Patron of Honour award, given to one incredibly special person. Only three other people have ever been bestowed this honour - Vidal Sassoon, Trevor Sorbie MBE, and Ann Herman. It was of course, Errol Douglas MBE, who was announced as the latest legend to join this glowing list, as an incredibly passionate advocate for the Fellowship in the UK and beyond. He took to the stage, in front of hundreds of adoring peers and his two children, to accept the honour and express his gratitude. The event also saw the new F.A.M.E. Team 2018 members announced; Ellie Bond from Spargo Hairdressing, Katie Prescott from Toni&Guy, Paddy McDougall from Rainbow Room International, and Peter Mellon from Medusa Hairdressing. Phillip Rogers also took to the stage as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to him for his unwavering dedication to the hairdressing industry. He took the opportunity to deliver a moving speech

about the work that The Hairdressers Charity do and their importance in the industry, reminding the room of why everyone should be behind this brilliant charity. As with every year, five industry professionals are named Fellow with Honours, along with one particularly dedicated individual named Fellow with Distinction. This year, Kevin Day from Alan d Hair, Susie Mutch from Sassoon, Neil Atkinson from Mahogany, Ashleigh Hodges from Jamie Stevens Hair, and Michael Young from Hooker & Young were awarded Fellow with Honours. Fellow with Distinction went to Vice President Andreas Stavrou. It was incredibly well deserved, with all the time and energy he puts into the Fellowship and the F.A.M.E. Team. Jamie Stevens was named the Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, a title he will carry throughout 2018, as well as being the star of the show at the Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year evening next November. Melissa Salons was named Individual Salon of the Year, Russell Eaton as Salon Group of the Year, and Sam Burnett took home the Terry Calvert Image of the Year award for his stunning ‘70s shag’ shot that won the hearts of the judges. Ken also introduced a brand-new award for 2017, the ‘Instagram Image of the Year’ award, given to the Image of the Year finalist photo that received the biggest response from the Fellowship’s Instagram followers, which went to Angelo Seminara for his gravity-defying image from his winning British Hairdresser of the Year collection. The celebrations continued long into the evening at the Met Bar, as guests welcomed in the Christmas season, reflecting on a fantastic year for the Fellowship and the hairdressing industry. Roll on 2018!

ally Brooks became the first female winner since 2005 of the biggest prize in the industry as she won the British Hairdresser of the Year title at a star-studded ceremony for the British Hairdressing Awards. Her inspirational work and contribution to the industry as a whole helped Sally claim the top award on the night, leading a charge of women picking up prizes on the night – more than half of the trophies were awarded to female stylists.

Taking place at London’s Grosvenor House on Monday 27th November, the British Hairdressing Awards were hosted by TV presenter Cat Deeley alongside Hairdressers’ Journal Executive Director Jayne LewisOrr and Schwarzkopf Professional’s General Manager Stuart Hamid. More than 1,500 of the top hairdressing talent from across the country attended the awards, which is a celebration of the most creative and technically-gifted hairstylists in Britain.

E

ach entrant must submit a series of images demonstrating not only their technical dexterity, but their creative vision and comprehension of current trends. Looks must be wearable and beautiful, as well as pushing the boundaries and limitations of hairdressing to showcase the pinnacle of a hairstylist’s creativity. Finalists are then judged, twice, by a panel consisting of hairdressing legends, leading national beauty press, and past winners of the awards who have since joined the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame; an accolade presented to those who win the same category on more than three occasions. On the night, guests and finalists mingled over a champagne reception before settling down to a sumptuous three-course dinner. Entertainment came not just from Cat’s wisecracks, but also from pop supergroup Boyzlife, who got the room on their feet with a storming greatest hits set. There was inspiration a plenty from hosts Schwarzkopf Professional too, as their team took to the stage to present their Ikonic Essential Looks collection (with a little help from session stylist legend Tyler Johnston, colour extraordinaire Lesley Jennison, and Rainbow Room International’s award-winning duo Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain). However, much as the night provided the opportunity to network, party and peruse the collections created by finalists, the evening was really all about the winners and their work. Talent was recognised across 16 categories, covering both regional entries representing the whole of Great Britain and specialist collections including men’s hairdressing, avant-garde work and colour. Facing a standing ovation on her big win, an emotional Sally said: “I never thought I’d be standing on stage accepting this award, especially as I was up against such amazing hairdressers that I respect so much. Thank you to my amazing team and the support they give to me and each other, and thank you to my photographer, Jenny Hands. She

was the first photographer I worked with back when we were test shooting. I couldn’t have done this without her!” A win at the awards doesn’t just provide industry recognition. A British Hairdressing Award marks the winner out as amongst the most talented hair professionals in the country and, as the world continues to look to Britain for hairdressing inspiration, trend forecasting and techniques, walking away with a trophy at the awards can lead to global recognition. Also celebrating on the night were teams from Mark Leeson Salons and Russell Eaton Salons, both of whom won three awards each. An ‘Express’ treatment with Matthew Curtis @ Rosewood London.

T

he Orient Express originated back in 1883 and its luxurious glamour has not just inspired thousands of travellers to tour across Europe and beyond within its fabled coaches, it has also captured the imagination of countless filmmakers and authors over the last century. Most notably Agatha Christie, whose classic novel ‘The Orient Express’ is now back in our cinemas, as retold by award-winning director Kenneth Branagh. Murder on the Orient Express’s stellar (and very beautiful) cast includes Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley. If you, like the aforementioned Hollywood gliterrati, desire a taste of the good life and a little lavish pampering, you can now get your fix of this glamorous long-haul passenger train without actually leaving the noir of London’s Zone 1. Recently, I hopped off the somewhat less ritzy carriage of one of TFL’s tubes at Chancery Lane, in London’s Holburn, and walked along to Rosewood London, entering through an archway that opens into a grand Edwardian courtyard. Rosewood London is a little oasis of tranquillity, unique among luxury hotels in London. It has a charming feel of timeless heritage to it, and is set just steps from the bustling streets of Covent Garden. Its central situation makes it an ideal location for Matthew Curtis’s multi-award-winning hair salon. The salon is set in a cosy, but plush, site downstairs in the hotel’s Sense Spa, and its Orient Express inspired design is just entrancing. You really could be on-set with Kenneth Branagh’s cast, were it not for the bottles of Kerastase, tubes of dye, and hairdryers forming small hairdressing tablescapes on most surfaces. The salon offers classic cuts, colouring, and regular and express blow-dry menus, from 9am ‘til 9pm seven days a week (hurrah!). There’s also an in-room styling service for guests residing at Rosewood.

Book yourself into the Rosewood for a short but refreshing journey that really is first class.

By Josie Smith

I was put in the very capable hands of Jason in the salon, and opted for an express blow dry. It is that time of year now where we all want to look our very best at Christmas parties and festive soirees, and as a blonde with quite a bit of wear and tear on my tresses, I’m always trying (and generally failing) to get healthy looking hair with a polished finish. Time is of the essence for all of us of course, and I’m no different, but I was pleased that Jason took the time to establish what I wanted from my visit, before making sure I had a quick turnaround. He started off by cleansing my hair using a light and moisturising shampoo, Kerastase Bain Satin 1, following that up with a combination of Kerastase’s Fusio-Dose treatments, which have a protein base to help restore and condition the hair. Obviously nothing too heavy in terms of conditioner was applied though, as this can inhibit volume and body when the drying actually properly commences. A product Jason explained he’s started using relatively recently with great success is Khairpep’s Transforme - with K18Peptide. It’s a serum that you work through and leave in the hair during blow drying, and it seems to be preventing dryness and breakage getting worse according to Jason. He also popped on a little Kerastase spray-volume, and then quickly went to work on giving me healthy looking wavy hair, that had a nice bounce to it. The end result was really pleasing, very natural looking, and just the whole experience of being in such a beautifully decorated salon uplifts a quick blow dry, and makes it seem that little bit more decadent and special. If you’re in central London soon, and heading out on the town, don’t waste time struggling with your locks alone. Instead, book yourself into the Rosewood for a short but refreshing journey that really is first class. For more information see - www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/london/wellness/Matthew-Curtis

THE ERROL OF HAIRDRESSJNG

Errol Douglas MBE is in great company. On Monday, 4th of December, at the Dorchester Hotel in London, he joined Vidal Sassoon, Trevor Sorbie MBE, and Ann Herman, as only the fourth person to ever be granted the Patron of Honour award by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing.

I

t’s the latest in a long list of accolades presented to the awardwinning stylist based in London, but one he treasures greatly.

“It still hasn’t sunk in,” Errol tells us. The award is so prestigious it’s only brought out for truly game-changing hairdressers, and usually as their careers are coming to a close, but such is the impact made by Errol he has received it while still in his prime. “They gave it to me at 52 and my career isn’t over by any chance, so to get it now is bizarre. It’s an honour within an honour – it’s enormous! “It shows that it’s not because of your age or what you’re doing, it’s because people respect that you’re at the top. For my name to be on that alongside the likes of Trevor Sorbie is mindblowing.” Member of the British Empire When you’ve won just about everything there is to win in the industry – Errol is twice British Afro Hairdresser of the Year, he’s won the London L’Oreal Colour Trophy and also the Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year – it might be hard to pick a crowning achievement. But Errol is also one of a select few hairdressers who have been honoured by none other than the Queen herself, it ranks right up there alongside his Patron of Honour award.

“I can’t top being the youngest to get an MBE,” he says. “That will top everything apart from this. I got my MBE in 2008 when I was 46 – that was crazy. That wasn’t gifted to a lot of people in the industry so it’s a major thing to have. “It’s an accolade beyond accolades. And it wasn’t Prince Charles or Prince Harry who gave me it, it was the Queen. Where I come from if the Queen gives you something you’re going to remember it for the rest of your life.” Incredibly, Errol and the Queen had a lengthy chat about their shared acquaintances in London’s hair and fashion circles. He recalls: “I was having a conversation with the Queen about her hairdresser Charles Martyn, who was on call to her all the time, and her dresser Stewart Parvin. One of her aides came up and had to tap her to move on! That’s what you call an incredible thing and to get it and for her to give it to me was golden.” Fellowship Getting to the stage of meeting the Queen and earning honours alongside industry legends takes dedication, passion, an enviable work ethic, and a little bit of help along the way. Fortunately Errol has had a decades long association with one of the most beneficial organisations in the industry, the Fellowship. As a member of the Fellowship, Errol was entitled to apply for the exclusive F.A.M.E. Team artistic squad. To show you the calibre of talent identified by the Fellowship for the team that year, as well as Errol, two of the final six included Antoinette Beenders and Sergio Giannasso, stylists who are now at the very top of the industry, and with whom Errol remains firm friends. “The F.A.M.E. Team creates massive, massive, stars. Anybody who is anybody knows that if you work hard, especially in this profession, it pays off. The Fellowship can get you in the spotlight and it can train you. It’s got every facet that can connect you with how you can get to the top. “They have four strings to their bow. ClubStar which you can join aged 16-25 and is a third of the price but it’s amazing. Then you’ve Colour Project and you can go and have a year’s degree of colour work with the best people in the industry – only about 10,12 people get chosen. Project X is different, more styling; it’s the finishing school to get into the F.A.M.E. Team and it’s another platform that gets you out there. And if you’re fortunate you get into the F.A.M.E. Team. Every person who has got into the F.A.M.E. Team is someone. “Chris Appleton, who does the Kardashians, he’s one of my ex-people and he’s huge. Antoinette Beenders, Jamie Stevens, Indira Schauwecker from Toni &

Errol With Tracy Devine-Smith

Guy, Paul Merritt was F.A.M.E. Team, Zoe Irwin… We find it and we bring it out of them. In the F.A.M.E. Team you don’t just work with one person, you go and work with everyone. Now I’ll give up a day, Mark Hayes will give a day, Angelo Seminara will give a day. “There’s so many perks to it and it’s one of the best networking opportunities around. It can get you on stages you’ve never been before. Then there’s the Fellowship Luncheon, President’s Night, very prestigious. You can find yourself sitting next to John Frieda or Trevor Sorbie – that’s what you’re buying into.” The next generation Errol has devoted much of his professional life to advancing the Fellowship, including a spell as President and his love for the organisation is clear. But what else can up-and-coming stylists do to help advance their career and get to Errol’s level? “That’s the million dollar question,” Errol says. “My level is unique to me. That wasn’t a chosen career. If you know the person I am, I’m a Capricorn. I’m a climber, I hate being bored. I don’t use people I just get on with it. I would say to anyone who wants to do what I’m doing is you have to have a steady climb. Train yourself

in everything and make yourself available to everything. Your steady climb is a unique fingerprint to you. “I’ve always been interested in pictures – that’s how I made my reputation with my collections and the TV work fell into it from that. A lot of people think that it was a natural path, it’s not. You just need to see where it takes you. It’s a huge avenue and I think a lot of people limit themselves in that respect – they’re going for one goal, you should be going for many.” Future Having achieved more than the vast majority in the industry, there could be a temptation to sit back and enjoy what he has built. But Errol isn’t like that and he’s still inspired to work and create. “New things drive me forward,” he says. “New collections, new shows, anything connecting us to the future. I don’t do the same thing. People love what we do and if that can live on and we can do that all the time I’ll be happy. I just like creating and doing new things.” There’s a lot in the pipeline in 2018 including a relaunch of his electrical range and bringing new wet products to market so expect to see much more from Errol – his journey is nowhere near done yet.

Behind the Hair Scenes...

Bernard Connolly

Only last month we gazed in amazement at the incredible collection images created by the nominees at the British Hairdressing Awards. A stunning representation of the creativity, skill, and talent we are fortunate enough to have in the UK. As hairdressers it is easy to look at these images and focus purely on the hair but what makes a collection exude feeling and presence is created by more than just the hairstylist. It takes a team to put together these high end looks including photographers, retouchers, make-up, models and art direction. Our industry is full of talented individuals who are not hairdressers.

One person who stands out as helping tie all the ideas together and bring about the essence of what the hairstylist wants to achieve from their collections is fashion stylist Bernard Connolly. Well respected in the industry, Bernard who was previously Head of PR for Kenzo has quite a repertoire of work behind him solidifying his place within art direction in the hair and beauty industry. This vibrant, charismatic man gave us an insight into his career in the hair world. SalonNV: It’s been a fantastic year for you Bernard! What have been your highlights? Bernard Connolly: “It’s been such a busy year with so many projects. The highlights are

32 | SalonNV Magazine

that I’m travelling more than ever which I love, working with some of the biggest names in the industry, and now have a TV agent, being featured in great shows such as Britain’s Next Top Model.” SNV: Have you always wanted to be a stylist? BC: “Yes, dressing up as a child and going off with mum’s shoes! Watching dad put together his own outfits, loving the glamour of them going out in the West End of London. We lived in Piccadilly and so there were always parties to go to and alot of glamour.” SNV: Take us back to the early days and tell us a little bit about how you started your career in fashion? BC: “My mum wanted me to work in law, so my early education was centred round academia. My late sister was a fashion model and always going to fashion shows and doing amazing photo shoots. My first fashion show

was with Antony Price at the Camden Palace (as it was called then) and I will never forget the feeling and light bulb moment that happened during the whole drama of the show and getting ready, Antony was the Tom Ford of his day! I then went to St Martin’s to do a Fashion Illustration and Design degree and went to work for Antony as his design assistant. From there the seed was sown.” SNV: You’re well respected on the hair industry circuit for being one of the best stylists to work with on collection images. How did you break into this area of styling? BC: “It wasn’t so much breaking in, it was a gradual process of meeting all the key icons in the industry through my earlier fashion career such as Trevor Sorbie and other session teams, the phone just never stopped. Having said that working with hairdressers at the early stages of their career and building relationships, they would then going on to win awards and it just snowballed from then on. It also helps having so many wins in succession and that kind of created the avalanche.” SNV: What do you love about working with hairdressers? BC: “Hairdressers are very different to fashion people, much more intense, demanding, and creative to the most minute detail but that’s what makes them endearing to me. The finished images really do justify this intense and detailed process.” SNV: Could you explain the process of the preparation for an important hairdressing shoot? BC: “It’s all about communication of ideas and preparation, preparation, preparation! Whenever you think the preparation is done, you start the preparation again.” SNV: What advice would you give to a fashion stylist who wants to work with the hair industry? BC: “The advice is to get thick skinned, be confident and happy in what you do, be open to ideas, and be passionate about everything you do. I’d say formal fashion training is so important to discuss how the human body form and makeup of garments. I always try to help young fashion students, looking to break into fashion styling.” SNV: If you were a hairdresser, whose style do you think would match yours? BC: “I so respect hairdressers but could not envisage being one due to the constant and huge effort they put into their jobs 24/7. However, in terms of style, young designers at London Fashion Week always excite and their toe dipping into the future, which keeps fashion fresh and style alive. This inspires me hugely.”

to empower young talent to help move them forward in the industry, such as working with the Fellowship of British Hairdressing, hair media, and fashion editorial family.’ It takes people from all walks of life to keep the wheels turning in the British hair industry with many talents helping support hairdressers on their journey! Bernard is certainly one of those gems who adds some extra sparkle and respect to our industry. By Katie Margereson

SNV: What can we expect to see from Bernard Connelly in 2018? BC: “With all the seeds that I’ve sewn in 2017 and also now having a TV agent, it’s looking to be a busy 2018 with photo shoots already underway. I’m also excited about Fashion Week F-Rows coming up in February again with lots of existing and new talent; it amazes me seeing everyone’s vision coming to fruition. There’s great talent in this country and we very much lead the way in fashion, hair, and beauty and I’m proud to be part of this industry. I love

Louise Bannigan, Founder of Epibrow, has 22 years’ experience in the industry and has visions of rolling out more and more innovative beauty techniques. Always quick to spot a trend, Louise makes sure Epibrow is always at the forefront of the industry. Her talents led her to becoming an ambassador and trainer for top beauty brands before opening Epibrow in 2009. Since then Epibrow has become one of the most highly regarded beauty brands, not just in the UK but worldwide. Louise puts the successes of Epibrow down to her passion, creativity and drive to constantly seek out new treatments.

EPIBROW T R AINI NG TH E NEXT G ENERATIO N

For Louise, her students are where the brand draws its strength and reputation. One, Misty Crew, has won Best Brow Artist at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards and the successes of students speaks volumes for the culture of excellence Louise has embedded in Epibrow. She says: “Personally I feel we’re only as good as the students that we train. So it’s amazing, we’ve got quite a few award winning students. We’ve got a couple of girls who’ve won awards down south as well like Newcomer of the Year for microblading and eyebrow artistry - it feels great to be able to support them that way.” More than just benefitting the reputation of Epibrow, the techniques Louise’s trainees have learned under her tutelage have been truly life changing due to the success they’ve brought them. “Misty managed to go on her first holiday about two years ago, where she had three young kids under five at the time. She’s one of the first girls to do the full Epibrow training. She introduced it to the borders and now she’s got her own all-singing, all-dancing brow and semi-permanent make-up bar. She’s got a four month waiting list and people travel from all over the country to see her. It’s fantastic.” Louise told us she been blown away by the reputation her brand has cultivated, attracting students from all over the world: “It’s crazy we’ve had students fly over from Dubai, we’ve even had a student fly out from Mauritius to train with us. We have people asking for the Epibrow technique from Australia and we even have a few people doing it in the States. “We’re going to New York in March, we’re doing brows for a company that are looking to take our henna and brow technique on. Then we’re out in Moscow in January for another company who are interested in our stuff, so people are starting to take notice of us now.” Epibrow has built a sterling reputation on the back of its trademarked microblading technique, but hasn’t for one second rested on its laurels. Constantly striving to push

Louise Bannigan training and beauty techniques, including securing an exclusive UK training course with US-based National Hair Loss Association. A partnership that has proved to be incredibly rewarding for Louise and the team. Their revolutionary medical grade laser treatment can stop hair loss and can even increase hair density. She says: “We were in the States last October and were able to be to pick up a contract from the National Hair Loss Association because we do stem cell treatments and they’re big on hair loss treatments after cancer. So we see a lot of referrals from hair loss after cancer, where a couple of years after chemo a patient’s hair hasn’t grown in the way it should, so it makes us feel great that we’ve got something we can offer where even the medical professional haven’t got anything to give to the patients. “I love the hair loss side of it you know, it’s

brilliant. It’s very rewarding, that’s a big part of why Epibrow was formed and put together: to be able to offer something for people after cancer.” The conversation soon turns to what separates Epibrow apart from beauty brands that offer similar treatments. Louise’s constant strive to move the brand forward and ultimately how Louise can better give the next generations of beauty practitioners the best starts to their careers. Bannigan said: “I don’t believe that there’s anywhere else in the UK or even that I know of in Europe, that offers the kind of treatments and training courses as Epibrow. We do a brow course where we do stem cell and microderm rollers for the eyebrows, so that we’re treating hair loss effectively and efficiently. Then dealing with the hair loss side of it for the scalp, the skin side, the brow side and a whole range of different products.

“We were the first to bring out the disposable blades for microblading so that the infection control levels were super high, so I don’t think there’s anybody that has anything out there the same as Epibrow just now. “I think all the High Definition girls were looking for the next step on and when Epibrow launched, because it is a brand as well, we aren’t just a microblading company; we’ve grown. We’ve given them logos for their websites, we give them all the support as well and we really want them to grow with us. We’ve also got a laser tattoo removal machine, which can remove all the old pigment in the eyebrows so you can start again. So I think we’re quite cutting edge in what we’re offering, and that’s why we are busy and why a lot of our students are making a success of what we do.” Next year is set to be another outstanding year for Louise and Epibrow as Louise is looking to offer newer and more advanced treatments. Including their new range of henna, having spotted the growing interest in henna for brows, Louise thinks this will put Epibrow on the cusp of the next big brow trend. She explained: “One of the new thing we have coming to the market in January 2018 is our own range of henna for eyebrows. “I think it’s going to be massive to be honest, because the demand for it in the last couple of months, there’s not a week gone by when we’ve not had some sort of training on it.”

We’re quite cutting edge in what we’re offering, and that’s why we are busy and why a lot of our students are making a success of what we do. www.SalonNV.co.uk | 35

THE Devine BALANCE By Katie Margeresson

Many hairdressers have a dream of having a successful career travelling the globe doing what they love. They anticipate the pride of having collection images published and the excitement of international location shoots, but many who were once determined to fulfil their dreams get to a point in their lives where one thing seems to slow down or even stop their climb to the top... family.

Being a parent and the responsibilities that come with it changes your perspective of the freedom you have to work your way up in the hair industry. The thought of travelling, working long hours, childcare, and the unfounded feeling of guilt often sees hairdressing parents shelve their dreams though fear, but this does not have to be the case. One person who stands out as being a hugely successful hair stylist whilst maintaining a wonderful work/ life balance is Tracey Devine-Smith. The Affinage Global Ambassador, session stylist, and Global Creative Director of Glamour Hair Salons in the UAE has found the perfect mix. Hailing from Elgin, Scotland, Tracey sold her successful Angels Salon after 20 years to uproot to Spain when her husband relocated for work. With three children this was certainly a life changing decision but by working together as a family they have successfully achieved a great way of life. Tracey spends her time between their current place of residence in Cyprus, the Glamour Hair Salon in Abu Dhabi and jetting back to the UK and America for her session styling and work with Affinage. This talented lady oozes positivity and warmth and kindly took the time to talk us through how the Devine-Smith family maintain this great balance.

38 | SalonNV Magazine

SalonNV: When you were starting out in hairdressing did you ever think that you would as successful as you are? Tracey Devine-Smith: Never! All I ever wanted to do was cut hair, the rest was a bonus. I did not realise how competitive and driven I was until I opened my first business and it just went from there. I was very quiet and shy in school and never realized what potential I had. SNV: What qualities do you think made you become as well known and respected as you are today? TDS: Firstly thank you for saying that! That’s so very kind of you. I’m just ‘me’ and I try to be honest and fair where I can. I always consider others and hopefully people see I work hard and respect that. SNV: What do you love about working internationally? TDS: It’s the diversity of who you meet. Everyone has a story to tell and every person benefits differently from your knowledge, it really is a dream to be able to do it. SNV: Have you come across any difficulties balancing family life and being an international hairdresser? If so how have you combated these issues? TDS: Yes but I think I’ve nailed it more lately! When I had my salons and travelled I felt that I diluted family time way too much. Now, since letting go of the salons I

feel my work life spilt is much better, I love it! What helped was that I was more honest with myself about what is important. Truthfully I wanted it all… you can’t have that. I am not willing to compromise on either therefore I decided on a 50/50 split and that’s how I do it now, it’s taken away the guilt and makes me feel like I can conquer both. SNV: What do you think your family have gained from the travelling requirements of the job you do? TDS: I guess independence and life skills. Culture has become important to them and they are very worldly children, I’m so proud of them all! SNV: Your daughter Poppy has taken the step into a career in the hair industry, how do you feel about this? TDS: I’m thrilled!! I always wanted her to do it but she fought it for years. She studied law and got her degree and then said “Mum, I think you’re right… I need to be in hair!” I’m so proud of her for having the strength to change careers and follow her dream. SNV: Can we expect to see the both of you working together in the future? TDS: Well never say never! Who knows what the future holds. SNV: As with any career being a parent and living your desires in your career can be difficult, what is the one piece of advice

you would give women/men who may be struggling with this? TDS: Remember you are only one person. Delegate and ask for help, there is no shame in it and try not to dilute your time with family by working and vice versa. SNV: What can we expect to see from Tracey Devine-Smith in 2018? TDS: Well it’s a busy old year! As you know Affinage goes from strength to strength and as it grows so does my role. I’m in seven countries between January and May so lots of shows and education but firstly still plenty of family time too, balance is key to success.

There is always a way to achieve your goals in your career, Hairdressing is one of the most flexible careers to do this. Tracey proves this can be done whilst being a parent but what about her children’s perspective? Tracey’s daughter Poppy, who is currently located in London working with the amazing Zoology team, let us know what it has been like having a mother who is as successful as hers and who went after her dreams. “It’s not just my character that has been shaped by my mum and her travelling, it’s my morals and motto in life too. She has always taught me not to attach myself to belongings, ‘attach yourself to people’. So it’s been easy for me to live anywhere and feel at home, making new friends along the way!”

2018 Presidents The Hairdressers’ Charity has announced its elected joint Presidents for the 2018-2019 tenure as Samantha Grocutt and Philip Sharp. The new Presidents will continue the excellent work of outgoing President, David Drew. Samantha Grocutt, Managing Director of hair and beauty PR agency Essence PR, has served on the charity committee for over ten years, both in its guises as The Hairdressers’ Charity, and formerly The Hair and Beauty Benevolent. Samantha has been instrumental in implementing and overseeing many successful fundraising initiatives during this time, and her passion for the charity, combined with an envious black book of contacts, will be a considerable benefit during her two-year tenure. Philip Sharp is the Brand Director of Affinage Salon Professional. Philip has been a part of the charity committee for the last 2 years, working closely with the team on the development of the charity, whilst actively managing many initiatives to raise funds, with remarkable success. Philip has a wealth of contacts across the industry having held leadership positions for many major global brands within the haircare market. Philip’s connections and breadth of commercial and marketing experience will be a major asset to the charity’s development over the next two years.

The Hairdressers’ Charity has been established to support hairdressers and ex-hairdressers who have been affected by illness, disability, bereavement or financial hardship. With over 300 applicants requesting help each year, the charity will rely on the support of the hairdressing industry to provide help for those who need it most. “I am delighted to have been elected Joint President alongside Samantha Grocutt, who is an invaluable ambassador for the charity. It is a great honour to be a part of such a dynamic and dedicated team who serve the charity supporting an industry I am so passionate about. I would like to personally thank David Drew who has done an incredible job as President. There does remain, however, so much more that we can do. The Hairdressers’ Charity is a lifeline for hairdressers who have fallen on challenging times. As we now move forward with our work, I would like to use this opportunity

to welcome any hairdresser or professional within the industry who is considering supporting the charity to please get in contact with the team or myself as there are so many ways in which we can direct you to help raise much needed funds for this fantastic cause,” says Philip Sharp. “Our industry charity is a small but worthy cause that helps hairdressers in need. We’ll be looking to secure as much support as possible from those in the industry during our time – whether that’s financially, or by helping us spread the message of what we do and who we help. The hair world is exceptionally giving and if we can just be remembered as one of your annual causes then it’ll help us reach our £200,000 annual target to help others. But, it’s also just as important that people know about the charity, so that they can request support when they need it. It’s going to be a challenging but rewarding time,” concludes Samantha Grocutt.

PArty tricks By Jason Collier

I

am delighted to be writing my first column for Salon NV; over the coming issues, I look forward to sharing with you my advice, tips and tricks, and anecdotes about life in one of London’s most glamorous salons. But before we start, a little bit about myself… Having started out at the age of 14, working every Saturday in a local salon back in Cardiff, I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a hairdresser. Fast-forward 18 years, and I am now Artistic Director at the beautiful Matthew Curtis Salon inside the famous Rosewood hotel in London, and have just been named Best Hair Stylist in the Marie Claire Hair Awards 2018 – it’s safe to say that many of my dreams have come true. Alongside my salon work, I’ve also been lucky enough to work with some incredible brands in various capacities; from travelling the world with brands like Selective Professional to showcase their collections across the globe, to working backstage for incredible fashion labels such as Emilia Wickstead, Victoria Beckham, Julien Macdonald, and Anya Hindmarch, being part of fabulous teams and creating looks that end up in the magazines worldwide and inspire trends for seasons to come. However, what I’m probably most ‘well-known’ for is being Victoria Beckham’s go-to hairdresser. I’ve worked with Victoria many times over the years, which is always a privilege, but my celebrity clientele doesn’t end there. I’ve also worked with A-listers such as Eva Longoria, Justin Timberlake, Damian Lewis, and Sienna Miller, creating redcarpet looks and styles for photoshoots. But don’t be fooled by the A-list names or the backstage shoots; my passion has always been salon work, and it’s an area of my job that never gets tired. I still love being in the salon and doing people’s hair. It’s the whole process; I love seeing the familiar faces or meeting new clients for the first time, and I love that sparkle in their eyes when they see the finished style. I just love being able to boost someone’s self-esteem with a great cut or colour; making my clients look and feel good is just an absolute pleasure. Having the right hair style and colour can be transformative, and it’s hugely rewarding when you’re the person responsible for their fab new look, who can help

and advise on colour, styling, and maintenance. Your stylist should be someone you can go to for help and advice, someone you can trust to help you look and feel the best you can; it can be really hard work and long hours, particularly on editorial shoots and working at fashion show, but the sense of achievement at the end of it all is so rewarding. I love the buzz of shows, but there is still nothing better than making my clients feel really special when they leave the salon. Now that the introduction is over, we can talk about hair! In my new column for SalonNV, I look forward to sharing some tips, trends, and styles with you, and in this first edition, it’s all about party hair – particularly hair that will take you from day to night, to make the most of those after-work drinks and events.

hair into sections and pin-curling it in place for the time you take to apply your party make-up will give hair a bit of extra body. Simply spritz with a light-hold hairspray and you’re good to go! Long hair that takes time to wash, dry, and style looks great in a simple bun studded with pretty pins. A braided bun adds more impact. Create two braids then join them either on top of the head or at the nape of the neck and fix in place. Again, dry shampoo will help to give the texture to hold this style in place. Of course, the best thing to do is book in a blow-dry, up-do, or quick curling session with your stylist in your lunch hour and you will be ready to go anywhere!

Party prep Changing your day-to-day look in any way will make a difference for a night out. And it doesn’t need to be anything dramatic to give your look a lift – for example, if you usually wear your hair straight and sleek, spending five minutes adding a loose curl using straighteners is bound to turn heads. Likewise, smoothing out your regular curls into a sleek style will be equally transformative. Even something as small or simple as adding a hair accessory will give your look a touch of oomph, with minimum effort. Try a glitzy slide or wrapping a ponytail with velvet or metallic ribbon to give your look a lift. Do the twist

Victoria Beckham

For those with a little bit of length to play with, simply pull hair into a loose chignon at the back of the neck, leaving some sections at the front to hang loose. Then simply twist those sections around a curling iron to create a casual but chic party look in minutes. Adding a few loose, face-framing waves is less ‘done’ than curling the whole head of hair, and looks cooler than going all-out, especially if you spritz the hair with a texturizing spray or a dry shampoo to give a matte texture. Volume boost Dry shampoo is always handy for boosting volume and adding texture to hair, which makes it easier to pin in place - silky, just-washed hair is trickier to hold in position. Six ways to promote long hair extension services this winter with secret hair While 2017 may be the year of the haircut, a look on the high street reveals that long hair is still dominating the style stakes. It was all over the AW17 runways, from uber-long at TopShop Unique, pictured, to smooth ponytails at Oscar de la Renta. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have the length naturally – and offering an extensions service is ideal for those clients who need a little bit of help. Secret Hair brand ambassador, Errol Douglas, believes extensions are the perfect solution for clients who want to stay on the fashion pulse for the season, but don’t necessarily want to commit. “Long hair is the style du jour for this season, especially amongst younger clients, as they embrace their lengths and maintain their style. However, by offering an extensions service, anyone can wear long layers in an instant. Many people assume extensions come with a complicated haircare regime but this doesn't have to be the case. While the wearer will have to ensure they care for their hair, modern extensions are relatively easy to look after," explains Errol. Here's Errol's tips to ensure clients get the best out of their long hair extensions this AW17 Consultation is key – especially if they haven’t had extensions before. Explain all the different techniques available such

as tape, spot, clip ins; invisible tape, micro rings, the list is endless and clients need to know what they are choosing. Less is more – it’s never good to add too much hair. Too many pieces or too much length can look fake, bulky and be hard to look after. Inspire and excite them – while celebrities are a great reference point, don’t forget to show images from the catwalk and red carpet to demonstrate how versatile extensions can be. Update their tool kit – ensure clients are using the right brush, shampoo and conditioners to care for their extensions. Show them how to use heated tools on their new hair, and how to brush it from ends to roots. Aftercare advice – give clients a maintenance and aftercare fact sheet to take home including how to wash them, how to brush and store them so they can get the best out of their extensions. Clients don’t have to commit – many want something temporary for a night out, and clip-in extensions are perfect. Show them how to style them and how to store them so they look good for longer. The Secret Hair Celebrity Secret luxury clip-in hair extensions offer volume and length in an instant.

Boosting Salon Business During January Malcolm MacNeil, Partner of Ishoka Hair and Beauty, has been in the hairdressing industry for many years and is celebrating 30 years of Ishoka. Throughout his time in the industry, Malcolm has experienced many recessions and has still taken the salon from strength to strength. Alongside fellow partners Philip Bell and Kathryn Longmuir, the trio have created a destination salon in Aberdeen, with clients travelling from all over to receive hair and beauty services.

Recommend a Friend A great way to get bums on seats and something that we have found works well in the early months of the year. By offering clients a discount, you are rewarding them and their friends for visiting the salon. We found that in the past a discount of perhaps 10% is adequate for this kind of scheme and results in many new clients as well as loyalty from those who are revisiting.

Offer a free treatment with hair services.

Clients love nothing more than a treat when they visit the salon, so offering a free conditioning treatment with any hair service is a fantastic way to entice them back into the salon, especially in the cold months. It’s a lovely treat to keep hair looking and feeling fabulous.

Work with your product company

Speak with your supplier and see if they can work with you on a promotion for certain products. ‘Three for two’ or ‘buy one get one free’ is a great way to boost retail

sales and we have found this very beneficial in the past. In January clients are always looking for a good deal and a way of saving money.

Beauty rejuvenation offers

At the beginning of the year, we often find clients and the general public are focused on being healthy for the year ahead, so why not create an offer around beauty services to promote healthy skin? Facials and massages are a great way for clients to look after themselves and keep their skin looking refreshed, especially with the cold weather!

Focus on the ‘New Year, New You’ Theme

Keep on going on the healthy route and perhaps add some detox smoothie/juices and healthy snacks to the salon menus, offering clients a healthy alternative when visiting. We all know how enticing a chocolate biscuit can be, so offering something fairly healthy would benefit those looking to get the year of to an active start!

Change the Way You Think About Retail Paul Ralph, assistant manager, Brooks & Brooks, London shares his tips on boosting retail.

Paul Ralph

1. Try not to judge the client’s spending power. Some stylists will avoid recommending products because they feel the client cannot afford them. But does the stylist know how much money is in the client’s bank account? No. Recommend the product and let the client decide if they want to purchase the product or not. 2. Understand and believe in the brand you are selling. Use the products yourself and experience the benefits. Make sure you have enough knowledge of the products’ features and benefits. Your clients look up to you for knowledge and inspiration. If you believe in the product they will believe in it too. 3. Many women invest a lot of money into their appearance. Be it make up, skin products, clothes etc. They would be willing to invest more in their hair if they have the relevant information. Don’t think of yourself as selling, you are offering expert advice and offering a complete service to your client. 4. Let the client feel and see the products that you are using on their hair. Even if it is just shampoo, bring the bottles to the section and place them face forward so they can see the branding. They are more likely to pick the bottle up and read what it is. Do not over sell it. Only mention it once, while they are holding it, and then mention it again once you are at the reception before they pay.

Getting Your Team Excited About Retail

Mikaela Martin, co-director at Spirit Hair Company share some of the tactics she and her business partner Lauren Turner use to get their team members enthusiastic about retail.

Double it Let’s face it, a lot of people are incentivised by making some extra money, so we introduce the Double It incentive to tap into this. We have picked out four months throughout the year when the stylist can double their commission on all retail products. We select months which are traditionally a bit quieter for retail sales, so this is a great way of helping sales pick up and motivating the team.

Slam-dunk This incentive is designed to encourage team members to upsell clients to treatments. The salon team are split into two groups. We create a board split into squares that lead to a finish line. Each time a team member sells a treatment they fill in a square for their group. Whichever team gets to the finishing line first wins a cash prize. This can get very competitive.

The League Table In each of our three salons we have a league table. Each quarter, the stylists that are the top of the league win a bonus. We base this on retail, treatments, colour and service.

January sales

Mikaela Martin

Don’t leave products on your shelf that don’t sell. Just like the major supermarkets, you need to analyse what products sell through. The ones that don’t make the grade are taken off and sold off with a discount. We set up January sales baskets and fill them with products that have been sitting on the shelf for 6-12 months. We give a bonus to the team if they sell it all through by the end of January. Incentives like this don’t need to cost a lot of money and we all know how good we feel when we achieve our goals.

Will you be our

Valentine hair saviour?

50 | SalonNV Magazine

Looking for love? Dressing to impress? We all love an excuse to get dolled up and Valentine’s Day is certainly high on the list of important dates. While you might experience a bit of a lull in January, hair stylists can expect to be busy in the run-up to the most romantic day of the year. But what can you expect to be asked for? We turned to some of the biggest names in the industry to see what they think.

Suzie McGill, International Artistic Director, Owner of Rainbow Room International’s Uddingston Salon and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year 2017 with Dylan Brittain The topknot is great for any formal date nights where your clients are looking for a more sophisticated updo. This style is super easy to create and can look as effortless and textures or as sleek as the client desires. If a client has shorter hair, a bun donut can be used to help create the style and can be secured with hairpins. Super sleek, straight hair is another great hairstyle for Valentine’s Day and is super on trend for 2018. Men love hair that looks healthy and glossy, so the key to this look is blow-drying the hair straight and using straighteners over it to make it extra sleek. I always finish my clients hair off with some shine spray, oil or serum too for even more a mirror like shine.

Karen Brown, Owner of Hair by JFK Big, bouncy curls are one of my favourite looks for Valentine’s Day. When creating this look I always like to use curling tongs or heated rollers to get a more glamorous look and then brush the hair out lightly to relax and break up the curls and make them look and feel romantic. Braids are another fantastic hairstyle for Valentine’s date nights, as they look super flirty and playful. With so many different forms of braids such as the French braid, Dutch braid and fishtail braid, there are endless options for clients to choose a style that suits them. For a more relaxed and romantic feel, I always like to leave some sections of hair out around the face, which also helps frame the face too.

Karen Thomson, Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa A bob is an excellent haircut for clients who want to change up their look for Valentine’s Day. Short, choppy bobs are particular great for Valentine’s Day date nights as they accentuate cheekbones and eyes, showing off the clients face. To style this cut I always recommend backcombing the root of the top section of the clients hair to add some volume and and glamour to the look. Another one of my favourite looks from Valentine’s Day is a low ponytail. This look is chic and elegant and I particularly like to style my clients hair into loose waves prior to creating the ponytail to give it a more romantic look. The ribbon is one of the most on trend hair accessories for 2018 and works perfectly with this look to secure the ponytail together.

Paul Callaghan, Crazy Color Brand Ambassador Valentine’s is a great time of year to encourage your clients to have a bit of fun with their look and the new Crazy Color® Pastel Sprays are a commitment free way for them to inject some fun, sexy colour into their style. The strawberry scented sprays work best on blonde hair and their wash in wash out nature mean that clients can add a pop of colour to their hair for Valentine’s Day this February! Style the freshly coloured hair into a loose braid with loose sections around the face to create a sultry look perfect for their date night.

Ross Charles, Owner of Ross Charles Hairdressing

condition and any split ends are sealed. Part the hair to the side and style this using a paddle brush, as the base must be smooth and sleek and ensure the hairdryer is held downwards on the hair shaft to avoid any frizz. Pull the hair round to one side for a sexy edge and continue with the curling wand to create a full wave. This look is perfect for client’s date nights this Valentine’s and will add a touch of glamour to any look.

Dean Jones, Owner of Dean Jones Hairdressing Spring/Summer catwalks saw an array of bejewelled brooches, chains and floral hairpieces teamed with soft, casual hairstyles. For Valentine’s Day date night, suggest adding a touch of sparkle to your clients hairstyle by teaming a tousled look with a pretty and delicate hairclip. The simple addition of an accessory or two can transform their style and update their look whilst adding a sexy touch. There are endless options for this trend and it may be worthwhile discussing this trend with your client prior to their appointment this Valentine’s.

Philip Bell, Ishoka Hair & Beauty Valentine’s hair of course is traditionally soft and romantic but there is still room to introduce a modern twist. I would suggest combining styles and techniques to create a new style, for example, a soft quiff with a scalp braid or strong, tight, smooth cap like look with curls throughout the ends. A modern style while incorporating some classic techniques from past Valentine’s! If you like to stick with a soft and simple elegant look this can be achieved by a blow-dry or using styling appliances. Those with above shoulder length hair should try a vintage wave. This hairstyle uses modern techniques bit allows the hair to experience more movement and volume. Using appliances such as a barrel tong help create this famous style.

Paola Pinto, RUSH Hair A glamorous, old Hollywood-esque style is great for long hair and can easily be created at home, to achieve the perfect Valentine’s hair. This style is suited more to those with longer hair, as it requires length to achieve the desired look. I would suggest using heated rollers to achieve maximum volume and curls. To get incredible shine for this style, use a few drops of Kerastase Elixir Ultimate before styling. The Grecian goddess style is another popular style for Valentine’s as it can really transform the clients overall look. The plait has been a huge trend and one that will remain for throughout the year. To achieve, split the hair in a middle parting and take two front sections at the hair line and plait back towards just above the ear on each side. Backcomb the hair on the crown of the head before gathering all hair including the plaits into a messy chignon at the nape of the neck.

Romantic waves are bang on trend and are always popular for Valentine’s Day. I always recommend that my clients have a deep conditioning treatment prior to this to ensure the hair is in prime

online technologies as part of the theory development, and, in addition to the vast experience available to students through the Rainbow Room International group, students are regularly exposed to motivational demonstrations by the highly acclaimed Rainbow Room International Art Team. This outstanding facility compliments many years experience in the development of techniques for early student training and beyond to advanced and creative styling techniques. Rainbow Room had commissioned a gallery of hands from the most creative and motivating hairdressers including Vidal Sassoon, Trevor Sorbie, Annie Humphreys, Tim Hartley, and Luis Llongueras. Rainbow Room International directors Alan and Linda Stewart are extremely proud of Academy of Hair, saying: “The reason behind the opening of the academy was that we needed premises large enough to cope with 100 trainees a day for our company plans. Once we found suitable premises it was down to creating a space that young trainees and hairdressers from across the globe would like to come and work within. It had to be a world class training centre, be easy to manage and have multiusable spaces/studios that could be changed from lecture theatre style to salon to photographic studio with minimal disruption and as quickly as possible.

“Throughout the development of the academy a lot of custom building was required but well worth it to achieve the concept successfully. We did not want to lose the immense feeling of space so we used a considerable amount of glass to keep the open and airy feeling. It also allows our head of training to monitor where everyone is and how courses are progressing at any time during the day. “The academy has already allowed us to work more efficiently and is a fantastic environment to work in. The academy has increased the number of internal and external students learning within Rainbow Room International and we are delighted with the project and the standards that are being achieved.” Rainbow Room International Academy of Hair 64 Howard Street, Glasgow, G1 4EE Tel: 0141 221 0400 www.rainbowroominternational.com

Ruth Atkins, Salon System Educator on Training and Courses Why should techs continually invest in further training? It’s imperative to regularly refresh your skills within the beauty industry as there is a vast amount to keep up to date with. The beauty sector is evolving at an alarming rate with new products, techniques, and technology - take your eye off the ball for a moment and you’ll soon be left behind. Clients are scarily up to date and will definitely begin asking about new treatments or trends. Nothing is more embarrassing than not being able to answer, regardless of your opinion on the treatment. What advice would you give to those looking for a course? What factors need to be considered before investing in further training? There are so many courses available so some research is required to find the right one for you. You may be newly qualified or just want to expand your skillset. To make this a bit easier, here are some crucial factors to consider before making your choice. Firstly, don’t just go by the price; it’s important to bear in mind that this is an investment and you need to understand what you are getting in return as well as the basic training. For example, in addition to teaching the latest lash techniques and creative trends, Salon System’s Creative Lash Technician course also covers health and safety, client care and troubleshooting, promotion and marketing, as well as a brand new interactive Lash Pamper Party concept to help professionals boost their revenue and promote their business. Secondly, check whether the training is carried out using quality products by trusted brands and also if the course requires you to purchase products. As a prerequisite, bona fide courses will always give you the option to not buy products beforehand, so you can make an informed choice after you’ve completed the training should you wish. Thirdly, all courses should be accredited by governing bodies such as; HABIA, GUILD OF PROFESSIONAL THERAPISTS, PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY DIRECT, ABT and BABTAC. This is to ensure that public liability insurance can be obtained; some training courses will issue a certificate but the certificate may not hold any weight, so do find out beforehand. What makes a great training center/environment? I always think the people are important. You want an educator who makes you feel comfortable and unafraid to ask questions. The more relaxed you feel in an environment, the more open you will be to learning and taking in information.

Tucked away in a stunning location in Gateshead is the studio where dreams come true. Got an idea for a photo shoot you’ve always wanted to bring to life? You’re in the right place. Been thinking about a hair collection concept that you need some expert help to realise? They have the talent. Need a host of accomplished creatives from a range of fields to help inspire you to success? It’s all here. Welcome to Hidden Heights Creative Studio. The creative industry is one that attracts similar people, so it’s surprising how few collaborative enterprises like Hidden Heights Creative Studio exist. Underneath a railway arch just off the Tyne Bridge, photographers, hair stylists, MUAs, or any artist looking for a space to create, come together to offer their services. It’s the brainchild of Marie Harkness, a photographer with a passion for bringing people together. “I started searching for a studio space around four years ago,” Marie explains to us. “I was freelancing from home and began to gain a regular clientele and felt I needed a professional space to progress within the industry. I started to approach other creative in the Newcastle/Gateshead area who I thought were as passionate about the industry as I was.” Marie came together with a make-up artist to start Hidden Heights, and with the addition of hair services, the brand was complete. From the outset the plan was to offer something different to the local area,

Master

of All Trades and Marie thinks they have achieved that. She says: “I believe Hidden Heights Creative Studio offers something really unique, it’s everything under one roof and it’s a platform for all of the creative in it. The studio is attracting to the eye as it doesn’t look like your typical hair salon/barber shop, make-up, or even photography studio. I think the interior of the space has a massive part to play in this with its contemporary and relaxed manner. Creatives can use the space to its full advantage with the industrial like props and furniture. It’s a chilled creative working space by day with an atmospheric ‘come to life’ vibe by night.” Being in charge of such a varied space can certainly lead to some interesting working days, and it’s rare for Marie to be doing the same thing from one day to another. She tells us that as not only the boss but also the in-house photographer, her typical day can be varied. “We have a diverse clientele of students and professional creative teams such as photographers, media and films crews, fashion stylists, hairstylists, and make-up artists who hire the studio for their own commissions or projects. Managing the hires can be a task in itself but it’s really rewading to meet other creatives from all over the UK who find the space as inspiring to work in as we do. “As the in-house photographer at the

studio, I also have my own work to manage on a day to day basis including a variation of work in editorial and magazine shoots, commercial and product shoots, campaign, look book, and model portfolio shoots. The other creative team members and I are also continuously collaborating on hair and beauty collections most days, if I’m not shooting/managing the hires, I’m retouching work, so there’s never dull moment.” Indeed, just the week after we meet Marie she’s barely returned from shooting a menswear campaign in Marrakech, Morocco – showing that the Hidden Heights team are in demand even away from the studio. “It was challenging but a lot of fun,” she says. “The first couple of days we indulged fully in the culture with a packed schedule of scouting locations around the city. The third day involved shooting in various beautiful locations/landmarks – with the time restrictions and challenging lighting conditions we had a strict schedule to stick to, however, it was an all-round amazing experience and one I will certainly remember.” The team are always looking to expand their horizons, and with the introduction of hosting industry related events such as fashion exhibitions and hair and make-up master classes in the coming year, Hidden Heights Creative Studio will continue to be a hub of creativity and talent.

Hair Team

A highly dedicated, multi-award-winning hair team forms the core of Hidden Heights Creative Studio. Whether it’s for fashion or editorial photo shoots, or just a simple hair appointment, Marie calls upon two of the best in the business – Aimee McPherson and Sam Wall. With over 15 years’ experience in the industry, Aimee educated internationally before settling down at Hidden Heights, while Sam is an American Crew Elite Team

member and has worked backstage at London Fashion Week, not to mention gracing the cover of our sister magazine BarberNV. Neither fell into the team by accident, having been handpicked by Marie through her own personal experience with the pair. For Aimee, the first to join, it was a trip of a lifetime that became a career. “We went travelling to Australia together,” Aimee says. “Marie approached me about joining the team as she wanted to introduce hair services to the brand which excited me. I felt it was at the right time in my career for a new challenge and by joining the team in the studio I would be able to get involved in more industry shoots.” For Sam it was more about moving away from the traditional barbershop route and getting into something new. He says: “After I decided I wanted to make a change in direction from the standard salon or barbershop, I then knew Hidden Heights was the next step forward as Marie and I have always had a great understanding with very similar vision. Marie and I have had quite a lot of publications together well before I moved here full time and I knew the move to the studio would only continue to develop my skill set.” Hidden Heights is certainly a world away from the rigours and routine of the

barbershop floor. And Sam is enthusiastic about the change to his daily schedule. “The typical day in the studio is like nothing I’ve truly experienced. We start at 10am and work until late every night; the house music is always pumping and there is always some form of photo shoot being carried out in the studio. The buzz is unreal with a huge mix of creatives from MUAs to photographers, models and hairdressers, and even local businesses hire the studio so the range of people through the door is really inspiring. Every day the level of creativity that I’m involved in really blows my mind and makes sure that I never have a boring day!” Both Sam and Aimee rave about the relaxed vibe in Hidden Heights that allows them to work at their creative best. For Aimee that was always the aim when she joined up and it’s allowed her to take her skills to a new level. She says: “The main reason I joined the team was to challenge myself and become more creative. I’ve always had pride in my work but I feel having involvement in the photo shoots means I can express my artistic flare and work with Marie to capture this. Earlier in the year we collaborated on the launch of the ‘BLUNT’ collection – we’ve had an overwhelming response and there are exciting plans for the set in the New Year, which we cannot wait to release.” The teamwork at Hidden Heights allows such an unusual level of collaboration and cooperation that it sets the studio apart from virtually anything else on offer in the industry at the moment. Sam certainly agrees, saying: “At Hidden Heights I don’t feel we have any competition, not because I feel it’s better than any other salon or barber shop but because we are different. It’s not a salon or barber shop. Hidden Heights offers originality and uniqueness. The whole Hidden Heights team all think the same, all have the same vision, and we just focus on us! We concentrate on improving the studio and pushing ourselves not only as individuals but as a team as well. Hidden Heights Creative Studio allows us to come up with weird and wonderful concepts that express our creativity and when you do that that is when you create something special. It’s a place where you can be truly free with imagination and creativity, and I believe it is a place where anything is possible with no restrictions. The opportunities are endless and I’m excited for the future.”

Hidden Heights Creative Studio has an array of external professional make-up artists who they work with on a day to day basis collaborating on photo shoots, portfolios, commissions, and regular clientele within all areas and expertise of make-up artistry. They are now looking to expand their in-house make-up artistry services with someone with the same vision and passion to expand their business within Hidden Heights Creative Studio. Dr Nestor Demosthenous Taboo-breaking treatment By Dr Nestor Demosthenous and Dr Rosy Fazzi

Despite being one of the most common health concerns for women, vaginal laxity the feeling of looseness down below - and its symptoms, are rarely discussed. Due to the intimate nature of the subject, it has taken on something of a taboo status. But with the introduction of our new ThermiVa treatment and addition of women’s health specialist Dr Rosy Fazzi to our Edinburgh clinic, our intention is to break down those old taboos and offer women an incredibly effective solution to a distressing medical condition.

Words: Dr Nestor & Dr Rosy Fazzi

Vaginal laxity is essentially the loosening of the muscles around the vagina, which can affect women’s continence, sexual health, body image, self-esteem, and quality of life. ThermiVa is a radiofrequency controlled, non-invasive treatment, which has proven clinical benefits and a high patient satisfaction rating. To understand the issue, it is important to remember the vaginal walls are just like the rest of the skin on the body in their structure; they are made up of collagen and fibrous bands to create strength and elasticity. It is the breakdown of this internal structure, either slowly over time or acutely with childbirth, which results in the loosening of the vaginal area. One of the most distressing symptoms of vaginal laxity is stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which is the condition where urine leaks when pressure is put on the bladder - laughing, coughing, exercising, lifting, or sneezing are all triggers. SUI is directly related to the loosening of the vagina and surrounding pelvic floor muscles which, in their weakened state, cannot fully support the bladder when pressure is put upon it. Vaginal laxity and post-menopausal dryness can also cause decreased sensitivity during intercourse, leading to reduced sexual satisfaction. If symptoms worsen, sexual intercourse can become painful, which leads to women avoiding intimacy. Some women may also have cosmetic complaints following loss of vaginal tone. Although an intimate area, many women still feel self-conscious about the appearance of this part of their body and this in turn can affect their sexual confidence. ThermiVA treatments can be used both for internal tightening and improved external aesthetic appearance. The loosening of the vaginal muscles is caused by pregnancy, childbirth,

68 | SalonNV Magazine

Dr Rosy Fazzi

menopause, overworking ‘core muscles’, certain medical conditions, and the ageing process. Most women will admit to some sensation of looseness below following pregnancy, regardless of how their baby was delivered. The weight of carrying a baby for nine months takes its toll on the pelvic floor muscles, no matter how fit and healthy the mother is.

This situation is made worse with vaginal delivery, which stretches the collagen fibres in the birth canal over a relatively short, sudden time frame as the baby makes its way into the world. The resulting vaginal laxity is more pronounced if the baby is on the larger side, if forceps are used or with multiple births.

The construction of the vaginal walls also deteriorates as a woman ages. After the age of 30, there is a deterioration of collagen and collagen production throughout the body. Just as with skin, the vaginal walls eventually succumb to the natural ageing process with the breakdown of collagen fibres and resulting weakening of the structure they form. Although this happens over many years, it is hastened by the onset of the menopause when oestrogen levels plummet. ‘Kegel’ pelvic floor exercises can be done to strengthen the pelvic muscles, however, even when practised perfectly, Kegels have their limitations and tend to only solve the problem in mild cases. Creams can be used to ease feelings of dryness and discomfort during intercourse, while oestrogen gel may be prescribed by a doctor. However, ThermiVa radio frequency treatments result in increased lubrication and therefore comfort during intercourse. There are no topical solutions which improve the problems of laxity or SUI. There are surgical options available. For women who suffer from SUI, tape or sling procedures to lift and support the neck of the bladder are available on the NHS. However, these procedures all require general anaesthetic and come with the usual risks of surgery. One such procedure, the use of mesh implants to treat prolapse and urinary incontinence has now been suspended in Scotland.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and have a huge impact on daily life, but vaginal laxity can be treated without resorting to surgery, with the quality of life of sufferers greatly improved. With more than 55,000 treatments worldwide and advocated by gynaecologists the world over, ThermiVa leads the way as the only non-invasive treatment which is radio frequency controlled and of proven clinical benefit. In a recent clinical study, patients showed more than 90% satisfaction following a course of three treatments. The science behind the treatment relies on the response of tissues to increased localised heat. Collagen shrinks when heated to sustained temperatures over 40 degrees. At this temperature, a process within the tissues is also started, which results in the production of new collagen and elastin, and increased blood flow to the area. With repeated treatments, there is also the long-term stimulation of new collagen production. Using a small plastic probe, ThermiVa works to maintain the temperature within a certain range for both the inside and outside areas of the vagina to stimulate these regenerative effects without being too hot to cause discomfort and burning. The patient is awake and comfortable

during the procedure. Patients in our clinic have likened the treatment to the sensation of “an internal hot stone massage”. The treatment takes 40 minutes, with no recovery time required. Patients often see a change immediately after treatment, with the area visibly plumper. Maximum benefits can be felt around six months after treatment, which comprises three sessions (one session per month). To maintain the results, annual top-up sessions are required. ThermiVa is suitable for women experiencing any of the symptoms associated with vaginal laxity. With the introduction of ThermiVa to our clinic, we can offer women an option which is safe, effective, and virtually risk free. Patients who have been treated have said it has changed their life - from allowing them to exercise at ease, not having to get up to use the loo umpteen times through the night, to no longer having to put up with the constant feeling of dry discomfort. Women are living and working for longer, and deserve to feel as healthy and happy as possible. ThermiVa is available to restore personal feminine health, and rejuvenate a sense of intimate and sexual wellbeing, allowing women to live happier, healthier and more fulfilled lives.

Th e futu r e of h a i r dr essi ng.

I

n the past few weeks I have been involved in lots of discussions about the future of hairdressing. Not the actuality of this fabulous industry, but what are we doing to get the next generation of stylists and technicians from.

hairdressing’s future’ that is looking at just that issue, she is taking the ideas that have been tried and tested, and twisting them to appeal to the next generation, this will involve using known names and faces that are exciting and interesting that school leavers can access and connect with through different social platforms.

There are countless professional bodies that are all trying to capture the imagination of school leavers, trying to influence them to see past the stereotypical view of hairdressing as a career. It beggars belief that in this day and age there are still some negative viewpoints about becoming a hairdresser. When I mentioned it to my careers officer way back in the dark ages of the mid 1970s I was told in no uncertain terms that hairdressing was for people who didn’t want to use their brain and as such was not a career I should pursue! It’s worrying to think that that attitude is still out there in the 21st century. So how do we get youngsters, ready to step into their first job to choose hair, what is it we do that can make a 16-year old take a leap into this creative world we live in? Einstein said “Creativity is intelligence having fun” and doesn’t that saying just suit our profession perfectly. If only we could find a way to create something visually engaging that could be used at school career days and at job opportunity events that showcased hairdressing in a way that made everyone acknowledged as a positive career choice. Emma Bavin, a (hair and beauty) recruitment specialist has launched a new concept based around ‘supporting

The Hair Council are also looking at ways to ignite a passion for hairdressing as a career and Dom Lehane is using Hair Club Live to create a movement that is energetic, raw and exciting, so it’s fair to say that things are happening and happening for the greater good of hair. But we still need to get to grass roots level and I genuinely believe we all have a part to play in this. Salons need to up the ante on their social sites to become attractive and engaging to school leavers who spend their lives on Instagram. Any business wanting to attract youngsters has to throw away the rule book when it comes to recruitment and the (dreaded) interview process and become more relaxed and current to be in with a chance at generating new hairdressers. Kids want to know they are joining a progressive, trendy business, and ours has those qualities in abundance so let’s start sharing some ideas about how hairdressing can truly take this situation and change it, not just for good of individual salons but for the good of hairdressing’s future.

It beggars belief that in this day and age there are still some negative viewpoints about becoming a hairdresser.
