I N D U S T R Y NEWS Debbie Digby Releases Book Debbie Digby, CEO of Passion4Hair and Managing Director of Feathers Salon Group, is eager to share her experiences with legal issues around chemical services in the hairdressing industry and has recently published a book – ‘Forearmed is Forewarned: Your Guide to Professional Hairdressing & Sound Procedures’. Debbie speaks from experience after finding herself faced with a legal battle in 2015. She received a letter from a no win no fee solicitor itemising 10 actions carried out on their client in her salon that had apparently caused damage to her hair and rendered the salon negligent and Debbie was mortified.

We were shocked to receive the solicitor’s letter – the allegations against us were quite something.” Debbie was determined to fight the allegations. What ensued was a two-year and four months legal battle including trial dates, insurance companies, a lot of research and innocent stylists

The Fellowship

President’s Network This is the Fellowship’s year of making a difference. Hairdressers love to share ideas and have the opportunity to network, so the Fellowship delivered just that with their President’s Network event recently.

I

t was a more laidback, free-flowing take on its predecessor and London’s Skylon provided the perfect picturesque setting for the evening’s fresh new set-up, with panoramic views of the London skyline and the River Thames. The once formal format of President’s Night moved aside for canapes and a DJ set, adding to the atmosphere buzz, and the huge gathering of Fellowship members, council, incredible sponsors, and trade press well and truly raised the roof for the occasion. Jo’s Last Word First to the stage to address the room was President Karine Jackson, accompanied by Jo Martin, whose two-year role as Chairman is coming to an end. Jo reflected on her time in the chair as her and Karine shared stories from their time working together, including the Hairdressers’ Charity bike ride in Italy last summer, leading nicely into the charity’s President, Sam Grocutt, taking to the spotlight to explain the wonderful work of the organisation. Step UP & SHINE It was the perfect occasion for members to

celebrate the announcement of this year’s winner of the Christofer Mann Step UP & SHINE Scholarship in association with NHF. Taking the number one spot was Nicola Hamm from Escape Hair Lounge, who will now embark on an invaluable journey of education worth £2,500, put together and mentored by industry legend Debbie G! Live Lounge The Fellowship’s Live Lounge set-up returned, hosted by Andrew Barton who had a handful of wonderful guests taking to the stage to sit beneath the hood for interviews that were being live streamed to thousands on the Fellowship’s Facebook page. First into the hotseat was Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year Jamie Stevens who shared stories from his days on the F.A.M.E. Team, which he revealed was the biggest and best thing he has ever done. President Karine Jackson joined him, talking the audience through her journey with the Fellowship and how it has led to where she is today as the President.

A message from the President “What a difference we made! The room was buzzing with noise from everyone talking and networking, so if you missed the speeches they are all on our Facebook page! The world is changing which means our industry is changing. As Henry Ford said, ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.’ At the Fellowship we have always prided ourselves as being the leaders of change, and that’s what we are doing!”

Next up was Sarah Black from Linton and Mac, current winner of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy, joined by Darren Oram from L’Oréal Professionnel and closely followed by Lydia Wolfe from Tony Wood Hair who won the Goldwell Colour Zoom Young Talent award, joined by Mark Giannadrea from Goldwell. They spoke about how these coveted titles have completely changed their careers for the better and encouraged anyone thinking of entering the competitions to take their chances and go for it! Lastly, former British Hairdresser of the Year Darren Ambrose took to the stage with Jayne Lewis-Orr, Executive Director at Hairdressers

Fellowship Fun The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s many art teams have had a packed couple of months as they continue their education under the tutelage of some of the industry’s most talented stars.

ClubStart Art Team The ClubStar Art Team got together recently at Griffins, in Barnt Green, Worcestershire, for a day with Michelle Griffin, hair extension expert and one of the industry’s top educators. The theme for the day was festival hair and of course, hair extensions. As well as going through how these two things marry up perfectly, Michelle also talked the team through her career so far. “What I loved about Michelle’s career story is how she has come full circle,” explained team member Jo Pacey from KH Hair. “She now owns the salon she first started in, after buying it at the age of just 22! From then to now, Michelle has built her business, won multiple artistic awards and has launched her own extensions line which has taken her around the world. She truly inspired us all with her story.”

8 | SalonNV Magazine

Getting down to business, Michelle showed the team how to use tape extensions in a fringe to add colour and texture, demonstrating how simple, quick and effective they can be if you’re limited on what you can do to a model’s hair in a show or shoot situation. The afternoon was spent putting their new-found knowledge into practice on dolls heads, playing and experimenting with various tape in extensions and learning how the best cutting techniques when blending them with the styling. “Our day with Michelle was amazing,” said Jo. “She is so passionate about passing on her knowledge and that really shows in the way she works. I’ve definitely taken a lot away from the day and I can’t wait to start using tape extensions in my future work.”

Colour Project The Colour Project spent a day in the life of a Sassoon hairdresser recently, as they got together with none other than Sassoon’s UK Colour Director and former Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, Edward Darley. As one of the industry’s biggest colourists, Edward’s focus for the day was to get the team thinking the Sassoon way in terms of colour. Edward and his Sassoon team kicked off the day with model demonstrations, also touching on precision cutting in order to convey the entire Sassoon way of hairdressing. “I wanted to share with concept of Sassoon shape and balance with the Colour Project team,” said Edward. “We also wanted to celebrate the craftsmanship of colouring hair in a more technical way.” Edward also took the time to present to the team about colour perception, enlightening them about the ways in which colour can make the mind interpret a mood, depending on factors such as culture. “The colour psychology that Edward taught us was so insightful,” said team member Katie Scarfe from CODE Hair Consultants, “it brings an interesting new dimension to

our work and thought process which is what these workshops are all about!” The afternoon was spent getting stuck into the practical work. The team all worked on their own models to let their colour creativity run wild. All inspired by Edward and the Sassoon team, the colours and looks created were bright, bold and imaginative; from dual tone colour, to vivid coppers and deep royal blues. Edward said: “It is always fabulous to spend the day with a team that are so passionate about colour. What I found brilliant about this particular group was the mix of experience between them, which made for a great dynamic. They were all so enthusiastic and on point with their questions.” Team member Krysia Eddery from Perfectly Posh Hair said: “The Sassoon Academy were so welcoming. I love learning from such talented colourists and stylists such as Edward and his team – they were so welcoming and inspiring. I have been hairdressing for over 20 years and every time I arrive on a Colour Project day, I just love it more and more! I am having the most incredible experience so far on this educational journey.”

Project X Spends the Day with Sassoon Academy Fellowship for British Hairdressing get up close and personal with the stars of Sassoon. Mark Hayes and the Sassoon Academy creative team were the latest hairdressing industry heroes to donate their time to Project X; the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s youth programme for emerging hairdressing talent. Ahead of the day – their fourth educational opportunity of the year – the Project X team were set the research brief of ‘What does Sassoon mean to you?’. Each member of the team was encouraged to spend time looking into the heritage of the brand, the story of Vidal Sassoon himself and what the company looks like today – and in the future. Research is an essential part of the creative process for hairdressers that want to produce editorial or session work, and a knowledge of the icons of the industry is equally important, making this a useful day for the team, both in terms of practical skills and the creative ones that will be essential throughout their careers. On the day, the group gathered at the Sassoon Academy, Buckingham Gate, London and were introduced to Sassoon international creative director, Mark Hayes, and his team. Mark shared his story so far with the team, explaining where he had begun, what he had learnt under Vidal and how he was carrying on the brand by combining heritage with a future-facing outlook. As well as sharing his story, he also provided plenty of advice – including the daily habits he

practices to stay focussed and balanced. A presentation from the Sassoon creative team followed, allowing the Project X team to learn Sassoon cuts and colours in an up-close environment, with a deeper understanding of the decisions that go into each style and the reasoning behind the looks. Once the team had got to know more about Mark and his team, it was time for him to hear from them, as they presented back their moodboards and research into Sassoon. As well as putting into practice their research skills, it also provided an opportunity to brush up on their presentation abilities; something which is reiterated with each Project X training session. In the afternoon, the team put together everything they had seen and learnt over the day with a hands-on cutting workshop under the guidance of the Sassoon team. Donna O’Donoghue of Eclipse Hair said: “It was unbelievable to spend the day at Sassoon, where Vidal’s vision continues to blossom even after his departure. I learnt cutting techniques that were completely new to me, and I am sure the rest of the team felt the same – the Sassoon team were such good fun to learn with, and so thorough. It was a totally inspirational day – huge thanks to the Fellowship and to Sassoons for enabling this day to happen; I am so grateful.”

En Route to another 20 years!

T

he team at En Route Hair & Beauty in Wakefield came together recently at Waterton Park golf club in the village of Walton, ready and raring to celebrate 20 successful years in business.

It was a crowd of 80, with the team joined by clients, local residents, and friends of the salon. Guests were treated to a three-course meal and a beautiful champagne reception. Ruby Macintosh, a 50s and 60s singer songwriter provided the entertainment with an air of nostalgia, before a DJ took over and the guests danced the night away. The occasion was of course to celebrate 20 years of En Route Hair & Beauty, but also to give something back. A raffle was held in the salon leading up to and during the event itself, featuring prizes from local businesses such as beauty spa treatments, meals at lovely local restaurants, and gym memberships amongst many more. A fabulous £1,000 was raised which was donated to Wakefield Hospice and also to Schwarzkopf Professional’s Shaping Futures initiative. Guests were also given a goodie bag full to the brim of gorgeous Schwarzkopf Professional products to enjoy. En Route Hair & Beauty had all the reason to celebrate, after a wonderful 20 years in the industry. Over the years, owner Mel Tudor and her team have been no stranger to awards, having finalized in the British Hairdressing Awards a whopping seven times, along with manager Claire Timlin winning Manager of the Year in the British Hairdressing Business Awards. “I am so delighted to have run a successful business for 20 years,” said Mel. “When I started on this journey, I could never have anticipated how big En Route Hair & Beauty was going to become. I was so proud and overwhelmed on the night of our anniversary ball; both by our achievements so far and the support from our wonderful clients who have remained loyal to En Route Hair & Beauty for so long now. I am very proud to have created such a talented team and I hope for many more years of growth and achievements in the hairdressing industry!”

O

n Sunday March 25h, the Best of British Barbering and Hairdressing came together at The Caves in Edinburgh for a day of entertainment and education. SIMPLE

WAYS

TO

TRANSL ATE

CATWALK TO CLIENT Maximum height, voluminous curls and super-sleek ponytails may be seen on the catwalks every season, but how do you translate the runway trends to styles that suit your client? “Rather than copying the total look it’s about taking elements and working that into your everyday styling,” explains Cos Sakkas, international creative director for TONI&GUY. Cos takes three looks from the shows and looks at how to create the client-friendly version.

ACCESSORIES “At House of Holland we created low ponytails with wisps of hair around the face and used coloured lace round the base of the tail. Accessories are big news at the moment, from simple coloured bands to more embellishment and bold details. The great thing about accessories is they can be used as big or as small as you want. Something simple like a coloured band can match your outfit or your shoes; something bigger can be the main feature to your overall look.”

20 | SalonNV Magazine

BEEHIVES “There were quite a few beehives at the shows in London and Milan and while it was exaggerated at shows such as Tata Naka, it can take on more of a 60s-Bardot feeling for clients. Simply backcomb through the crown and gather the hair into a ponytail just above the occipital bone and secure. This style is easy to do and is ideal for an after-work event or smarter day look. A little bit of powder such as label.m Resurrection Dusk helps create the volume.

SalonNV Magazine | 21

SC ALP BRAIDS “We saw a lot of scalp braids at the shows – think Fashion for Conservation, Hellavagirl and Francesco Rasola (pictured) - and they are always a favourite with celebrities such as Rita Ora. They can create an undercut feel to the hair without being too aggressive and of course, are temporary rather than a more permanent short cut. Simply part the hair low on one side, and scalp braid through the side, then wave or straighten the remaining hair, slick it over and pull into a low side ponytail. It gives an edgy feeling to any style for a night out.” Find out more about Cos Sakkas: www.toniandguy.com

STYLE FEST GLITTER-ARTY

“When it comes to festival hair, your only real limitation is your imagination – anything goes. Glitter isn’t ideal for everyday life a festival is the perfect time to indulge in some sparkle. Glitter buns really took off last summer, but we predict more of the same this year. Low slung messy buns are this year’s take on the messy top knot – super stylish in a nonchalant way and practical for festivals as no mirror, brush or steady hand is required. Part hair centrally and pull back into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Begin to wrap the length of the hair around the hairband until a bun forms and pin in place with Kirby grips. Don’t aim for perfection with this style: this is cool-girl hair at its easiest. Adorn by drizzling a little hair oil along your parting and sprinkling with glitter.” Lidia Patrizia, Stylist, Blue Tit Brixton

LIFE IS ROSY

“Dubbed ‘angry pink’ by the beauty media, the hottest hue to step off the Spring/Summer ’18 catwalk was Alexander Wang’s dirty shade of pink. Sitting somewhere on the rosy spectrum between lilac and rose quartz, this has been a hugely requested colour over the last few months, but if you didn’t dare dip into this trend before now, then it’s a must-have for festivals. A pre-lightening is essential for darker locks, however for hair that is already light enough, a wash-in, wash-out shade is a good go-to for a non-permanent, creative colour solution that will see you through festival season.” Harriet Franks and Robbie McPhilomey, Blue Tit Peckham

RAINBOW BRIGHT

“The perfect way to disguise dirty, greasy, festival hair, braids have been a huge trend, both on and off the catwalk, for the last few seasons, and their versatility and ability to transform a look means their popularity shows no sign of disappearing. So easy to recreate and working far better in hair that hasn’t been washed, they’re my number-one festival style. Update the braid for summer 2018 by making it a multi-coloured one. Go bright and bold with streaks of colour – permanent, temporary or extensions – that stand out against the rest of your hair, then weave these sections into your braids, for a truly standout look” Chloe Herve, Blue Tit Clapton

We all look to Coachella for style inspiration as Britain’s own festival season prepares to kick off. With the likes of Beyonce and that Kardashians in attendance, it’s a stunning extravaganza of incredible looks and inspiring styles. But what will be in vogue closer to home this summer? We asked the team at Blue Tit for their recommendations.

Erin Gavin Living That Life in LA

M

any daft trends begin here in Hollywood and the latest one is oxygen for the vagina!

Yes you read that correctly. Naturally I had to try it! It is supposed to be healthy for you and be a great cleansing treatment. It just felt like a gust of wind blew up my skirt! I guess sometimes Hollywood runs out of ideas so here we have “Oxygenate your Vagina”! Not for me but by all means test it out for yourself. In fact if you live in the UK just step outside wearing a skirt....pretty much the same thing! I tried to take a sneak image of the actual machine but let’s just say it resembles an air conditioning unit!! One thing I do like about Hollywood is award season. Award season is all about talent, fashion, and beauty amongst other things. Every designer wants an A-lister to wear their gown at the Oscars. I have to say there are some really strange and awful choices made but one of my favourites was Jennifer Lawrence’s look because it was modern and glam with her hairdo and makeup adding an edginess to it. Ashley Judd was one of my least favourites as the style and colour aged her. Lack of va-va-voom! I was lucky enough to attend many events during awards season such as Oscar animation party, Oscar shorts party, and a party with Katy Perry with Jamie Foxx. Somehow I ended up dancing on stage with Jamie Foxx while he was singing. Great party! I met Kobe Bryant (former LA Lakers basketball player) who won best Oscar short for his first ever short movie. He was actually one of the nicest celebrities I have met recently. Being humble speaks volumes about a person I feel.

It is all fun and games but really I love the work more than the partying. I was lucky enough to be asked to make a keynote speech at Stanford University not so long ago about entertainment and inspiration. Often the media influences our thinking - our buying choices, lifestyle choices, political choices etc. My speech was about making your own choices, making independent decisions despite what others may think and being the best version of you. Next month I will be talking to 1,000 people at one of the largest tech conventions in the world in San Francisco. Hollywood is built on dreams but turning dreams into reality takes hard work, takes the best version of you, and inspiration from others around you. Inspire someone today, I dare you.

IDoMakeup by Geo Kane Dream Day Photography

Geo Kane

W

hen Gary Lamont called the name “Georgina Kane” as winner of the Best Makeup Artist at least year’s Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards the shock was visible on the talented Ayrshire woman’s face. “I was blown away! It was amazing and totally unexpected,” Geo admits to us. “It put me on cloud nine for about a month.” Being crowned the victor in one of the industry’s most competitive and prestigious competitions is no easy feat and is testament to Geo’s skill and popularity. As modest as she is talented, Geo says she entered SHABA on a whim but by putting her people skills to good use she was able to get enough votes to get through to the final where her work shone. The positivity around her win has been huge and Geo says the benefits have been huge. “I’ve had people I don’t even know congratulation me on my win. It’s been great for business as well, it’s got my name out there even beyond Ayrshire in places like Glasgow etc. I’ve noticed a real difference since it happened.”

Grabbing Opportunity Geo’s route to success didn’t follow the standard path. There was no apprenticeship straight from school, instead Geo spent years working in a factory and pursued makeup only as a hobby. But after being made redundant at 30, Geo took the chance to turn her passion into her profession. “Makeup wasn’t a big thing five years ago the way it is now,” she explains, “I got into it before the boom and was one of the first in my area.” Despite having a lot of self-instructed experience, Geo recognised that it would be smart to take a proper education course. She says: “I went and did a two-week course at the Academy of Make-up which taught me a lot I didn’t know.”

Client consultation Part of being a professional makeup artist is passing that knowledge on to your clients to ensure you give them the best possible service. From her win at SHABA it’s clear that Geo has a fantastic relationship with her clients who all voted for her to get past the first stage. Trends come and go in makeup much as they do in all aspects of fashion and style, and Geo’s job is to help ensure her clients look the best they possibly can – which can be a difficult task if they have their heart set on a particular look. Geo says: “That’s something I’ve developed over the years. It’s having that conversation if a bride comes in with a certain look in mind and I now it won’t work with their bone structure or eye look I discretely have to turn them to a different way of thinking. If I’m going to do a look that won’t suit them and they won’t look their best then I won’t look my best.”

Current Looks So what are the styles Geo is being asked for at the moment? She tell us that “amongst the younger age group the dramatic, ‘Instaglam’ makeup with heavy eyes and contoured skin is quite popular. It’s a highly skilled type of makeup to do but it looks amazing on camera.”

It’s not a favourite of Geo, however. “I like glam but I like it a certain way. As a bridal makeup artist primarily, I’m geared toward the more

soft, pretty makeup. I think blush is going to come back in a big way which I’m over the moon about as I was an 80s child. “Heavy contour is on its way out. Highlighter is here to stay, I think that’s putting roots down. But it’s all down the individual, no two clients are the same.”

The Future Having claimed victory in last year’s SHABA awards, the temptation may have been there for Geo to try and win back to back titles, but she is content with her single award and will leave it for a new winner. Geo laughs: “I’m bowing out gracefully! I want to leave on a happy note. I’ve entered it, I’ve won it, and now it’s time for someone else to win. I would encourage anyone to enter as it’s a wonderful event. “This year I’m just concentrating on my brides. I’m very much one of those people who take life day-byday. I’m just happy to be working and to get more opportunities.”

Importance of Influencers

n a changing world, Schwarzkopf Professional is embracing the millennial generation by bringing on-board 12 digitally active ‘influencers’ to promote the brand online.

As they celebrate 120 years of success in 2018, Schwarzkopf Professional could easily have decided that ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ and stuck with their standard, old-school advertising methods. But instead they have shown exactly why they have such an illustrious history by taking a chance on something new and reaching out to a previously untapped market. This evolution is key to bringing their products to a new legion of fans, fans who don’t necessarily watch TV or read magazines, but instead get most of their information via social media and the internet. The 12 members of The Collective, Schwarzkopf Professional’s digital influencers, will receive a host of benefits as part of the scheme, including regular hands-on workshops covering social media skills and photography, previews and samples of product launches, tickets to relevant industry events, opportunities to assist backstage at Schwarzkopf Professional

events, a photography kit, access to new product launches ahead of the market, and member shop of Creative Head’s Coterie, The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, and State Registration. In return, Schwarzkopf Professional will benefit from exclusive content produced by The Collective members, as well as exciting and engaged brand champions who will spread the word for the brand across their social media channels. Stuart Hamid, General Manager, Henkel Beauty Care Professional says: “While historically hairdressers built their profiles in bricks and mortar and at closed-off, industry-only events, we recognise that a new generation of talented stylists are building their profiles online – social media platforms are their stage. Schwarzkopf Professional is embracing the new movement and supporting those professionals through top-level education and opportunities that will enable them to become fully-fledged industry influencers – both online and off. This is hairdressers talking directly to hairdressers.” Is this the future for hairdressing advertising or just a flash in the pan inspired by modern technology? Only time will tell.

One on one with Craig Chapman Craig Chapman is an icon to many in the hair world, his unique skills and versatility paired with his warm, genuine charisma make this guy a very special person and a joy to be around. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Craig recently on the set of his latest photo shoot and found out what life is like for him in this exciting time in his career. By Katie Margereson

48 | SalonNV Magazine

K

atie Margereson: You’ve had your successful salon in Cornwall for many years, when and why did you decide to branch out of being in salon full time and go into other areas of industry? Craig Chapman: It really started when I was about 30 years old and met Barry Jeffery (genius hair photographer). We started shooting together and I learnt I really enjoyed photo work, so I’d say that was my first real step out of the salon. This led to me winning a competition to assist Errol Douglas in Sydney for the Australian Hairdressing Awards. It was great to work with Errol, I class him as a great friend now. It all just rolled on from there really and naturally evolved! About six years ago I did the Cannes Film Festival for Gucci and styled some Hollywood stars. I never planned any of it! I didn’t even plan to be a hairdresser! I was going to be a mechanic! KM: Will there always be a Craig Chapman Salon? CC: Yes, the salon will always be there, I really don’t see why not! Maybe in a different location but there will only be one salon as I have no desire whatsoever to have more. I’ve had the shop for 24 years now and it’s been through every situation you can think of. There has been illness,

pregnancies, we’ve had ups and downs, I’ve even had a whole team walk on me before! The team I’ve had for the past 10 years are the best - our WhatsApp group is called ‘Family’ that’s how close we are. Things are great at the moment and I never want to lose that essence. KM: You’re known for being one of the most multifaceted hairdressers around and are well respected for being one of the best textured hair stylists in the UK. How did you develop these skills? CC: Thank you for saying that! I happened to do my training as a hairdresser with one of the best Afro Caribbean hairdressers in the West Country. Half of his clientele had textured hair and were ethnically diverse so over two and a half years I worked on maybe 50% Caucasian hair and 50% AC hair so it just seemed normal to me. KM: Did you realise at the time that the talents you were learning are relatively unique? CC: No not at all! I didn’t realise this until I started entering for awards really, it certainly opened doors for me. After my training I applied to work for an African family in Sierra Leone in their hotel; this was back in 1991. Customers would be wealthy Africans so that gave me a lot of experience and it just comes to me as second nature now.

When I won the BHA Afro award in 2012 it was quite controversial as you can imagine, I mean a white guy from the West Country! However my background is as much AC hair as it is Caucasian hair so it was well earned! KM: Have you any advice for hairdressers who want to develop these skills? CC: Education! Go and get yourself some fantastic education from the likes of the top people in industry like Michelle Thompson for example. We have a staff member who has done this and it has benefitted her and us greatly. KM: You are the Lead Stylist for TV show The Voice, how did that come about? CC: My agent who I met four years ago asked me if I’d be interested and of course I said yes! KM: Do you love it? CC: I do, it was nerve racking the first time as it was new but I knew I was ready. I put a fantastic team together, we learnt and sussed it. The executives working on the show asked if I’d done loads of TV, I’m a terrible liar so admitted I’d hadn’t. They were so happy that out of all the hair we do which sometimes can be all the 160 contestants and 25 plus dancers multiple times a show that we’ve only had two sent back. I’m really happy about that!’

SalonNV Magazine | 49

C R A I G 50 | SalonNV Magazine

C H A P M A N

KM: What does a day look like onset of The Voice? CC: Well it usually starts at around 7am, we are sent ideas about a week before which are then signed off by the production team. Everyone has to be ready by 11am for rehearsal but then things are calm for a few hours after that then it’s show time! All the departments on the show are amazing, I love it! I’m really enjoying TV at the moment, I think you naturally find things you enjoy. The Voice contestants really make doing the show meaningful, it’s great to make a difference in their lives by helping them look the best version of themselves and adding to their confidence which is much needed in that environment. We get to help them live their dreams, that’s why I love it. KM: In your opinion who should we be watching in the Hair Industry this year? CC: Ashleigh Hodges! And I’m not just saying that because she is on The Voice team. You know when you can just feel that it is someone’s time? She’s embarking on a really strong time in her career right now. Ashleigh has found her strengths and she is being exactly who she is which will take her far. I’m really proud to be part of her journey. KM: If you were not a hairdressers but still in the industry what would you do? CC: Great question! I don’t really know as I’ve actually had a hand in most things in Industry. I am a qualified make-up artist so I suppose I could do that. Actually I’d probably be an agent because of my work with Hair.com so if I wasn’t a hairdresser I’d

probably go all out in that. These questions are like therapy for hairdressers, I love it! I really enjoy the work I do with Hair.com it’s great that hairdressers who can’t commit to doing other jobs in industry have the option to experience different areas of hair without having to commit to it five days a week. KM: How do you think we can support young hairdressers to have more options in the industry and to realise their ambitions? CC: Allow them and support them. It’s the employer’s responsibility to allow them to flourish after they have completed the groundwork of hairdressing. Add fuel to the flame of their wishes and help them, allowing them to make mistakes also keeps them grounded. I recognise that my assistants may not be with me forever, you can’t hang on to them if they feel the need to try different things. We have to recognise that there may only be one member of your team who wants to branch out but if you support them the skills they learn can help inspire the whole team and make for a much better salon. KM: So what does 2018 have in store for Craig Chapman? CC: I’m going to be a parent! A dog parent! I get my own Frenchie in a few weeks so that will change things! Well obviously there’s The Voice but I am also waiting for confirmation for the Oscars working with a particular star who will remain nameless for the moment. I’ll be working on my BHA collection so that will take me through till May. Then I’ll be starting research for my new company! ‘

Ashleigh Hodges KM: Hi Ashleigh, great to see you here along with Craig. So how are things going with the Fellowship? AH: It’s great! I started off with the Fellowship right at the beginning of my career then was in the F.AM.E. team at 21 years old. I progressed and now have the responsibility of delivering events to the North of England representing the Fellowship and encouraging the youth of the North to become involved and aware of us. KM:It’s been quite a year for you! What have you got coming up? AH: Well I moved to London six-months ago, I’ve always worked in and out of London but moving here full time was an adjustment but all’s good now. I’m still working on The Voice which will take me up to mid-March then I’ll be doing more international education for Matrix. I’ve chosen to become officially freelance so that gives me the freedom to do all the things I have going on. KM: We love your hair! (Ashley shaved her hair for charity recently) I love my buzz cut! I even re-shaved it when it grew back! I was so happy to have raised money for the MIND charity and I was even more pleased that the video of the shave had 2.5k views which is 2.5k more people aware of the charity who may not have known about it before.

Jackie Den Heijer Avalon Hair and Beauty – Oban

Jackie and Dani

S

eptember 10th, 2017. Times Square. New York City. Amid the neon lights, street performers, and bustle of thousands of passers-by, Jackie Den Heijer is receiving a call to announce that she’s just been crowned the Best Colourist at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards back in Glasgow. The phone call tops off a momentous few days for the Oban-based stylist who’s in Manhattan to work at New York Fashion Week.

else does. We have a home from home environment; if clients want to come in from work on a Friday and kick their shoes off and have a moan, they can. We’re very down to earth and relaxed. “It’s like a family. It’s weird how it happened but we don’t regret anything and wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Making it big Success runs in the Den Heijer family. In fewer than five years in business, the team at Avalon have amassed six awards already. Jackie has worked at London Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, and the Cannes Film Festival to name but a few.

Humble Beginnings It’s a long way from Oban to Times Square. Just over 3,000 miles in fact. And that 3,000 miles seems even further when you’re starting off your career cutting in the corner of a gym.

However, Jackie isn’t one to get carried away with their success and she certainly isn’t letting it go to her head, saying: “We work really hard but I do have to admit that we have been very lucky as well. We’ve had a lot of opportunities that people don’t get and we’d like to think our work plays a part but the reality has been being in the right place at the right time and showing the right people our work, so in that respect while we have worked hard we are very blessed.”

“It was just meant to be myself in a corner on my own, doing the clients that wanted to come to me,” Jackie tells us about how her hairdressing career began to blossom back in 2013. “I hadn’t long qualified. I was a late bloomer and didn’t start my training until 2010 when I was 28.” Jackie worked in some local salons after finishing her training but never found one that truly clicked with her, so when the opportunity came to branch out on her own she took it. And fortune took her. “I opened in September and my last day in the gym was Christmas Eve that year. It just snowballed so quickly that I had to find a more central premises.” Despite her initial success with a small time operation, Jackie was under no illusion that it would be a simple task to upscale to a proper salon, fortunately she hit the ground running when she started Avalon Hair and Beauty. She says: “I think we did so well, so quickly, because we’re completely different. We’re open seven days a week which no one

Jackie’s daughter Dani is set to qualify as a beauty therapist and is a keen make-up artist, but she has been thrown into the limelight in another way – modelling. What started as a lucky break has seen Dani modelling for some of the biggest names in the business including Rocky Gathercole, designer for the likes of Beyonce and Katy Perry. Dani even walked in a one-of-a-kind outfit that Britney Spears would later wear on her world tour. Fortunately for Jackie, Dani is just as at home in the Avalon salon as she is on catwalks around the world so she won’t be giving up her family ties just yet.

The win at SHABA has had a lasting impact, with Jackie saying that it has given clients “a boost of confidence when it comes to booking colour.” Although it has come with a downside… “Now they think I’m a magician,” she jokes.

Family Business Avalon is more than “like a family”, it’s literally one. Jackie’s husband, mum, and daughter are all integral parts of the team with another two stylists and an apprentice rounding out the current Avalon staff. The atmosphere in the salon certainly benefits from the close bond the team has, with Jackie saying that “a few of the clients have said we need to get a fly on the wall TV show because of the laughs we have – not that we’d be able to broadcast most of it!”

Well next up for this colouring wizard is figuring out how to take Avalon to the next stage of its development without compromising what they’ve created. They’re currently turning away large numbers of clients each week so the addition of at least another couple of stations is on the cards. With more overseas trips planned including the likes of New York and even Korea, the future looks bright for Jackie and the rest of the team.

Microblading and Eyebrow Treatmeants As many of you will know, the Medical Cosmetic Centre always likes to bring something new to the table, and to be able to offer our patients and clients an innovative service, with the very finest practitioners at the helm. With this in mind, our patients always let us know what they’d like to see, and we try our best to make it happen; after all, our patients are the very heart of our business. And so, this spring we’ll be introducing a highlyrequested service into the clinic, with the addition of award-winning cosmetic therapist Moya Wren to the team here at the Medical Cosmetic Centre.

F

or many months now, our clients have expressed interest in there being a semi-permanent makeup offering available in the clinic, to sit alongside our aesthetic services, and I am delighted to be able to offer this now, led by one of the finest artists in the industry. Moya is a micropigmentation specialist, with 30 years’ experience and her own renowned clinic in Glasgow, with loyal customers all over the country, and she’s sure to be in high demand with our clientele too. But for those of us who haven’t tried it before, there may be questions around what exactly semi-permanent makeup or micropigmentation is, and how it works. In a nutshell, semipermanent cosmetics allow for ultimate convenience; creating soft colour enhancement to complement your facial features, or to correct and camouflage skin issues such as scarring and vitiligo. Don’t be fooled by the name; semi-permanent makeup isn’t designed to replace the cosmetics on your dressing table. Instead, it’s used to enhance your natural beauty, so that you feel more comfortable without makeup and can go out with bare skin as often as you like. The most popular semi-permanent makeup procedure is, undoubtedly, eyebrow tattooing. Brows are a hugely important aspect of modern beauty, and for many women, especially those who succumbed to over-plucking in the 90s, the thick, full brows of Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins just aren’t achievable. But semi-permanent brow tattooing allows the technician to create bespoke brows that look beautifully natural and enhance your facial features. Moya specialises in brow tattooing, which she calls ‘eyebrow boosting’, and works to create super natural, soft lines that perfectly mimic the flow and structure of a real eyebrow. The key to a natural-looking eyebrow is all about tailoring to the individual, taking into account face shape, skin tone and hair colour to create a beautiful, bespoke brow. Moya also offers a selection of techniques which clients can choose from, to create a brow that’s perfect for them. The ‘Hairstroke’ technique (sometimes referred to as the ‘brushstroke’ or ‘featherstroke’) is the most natural and realistic option, mimicking realistic hair growth. The ‘Powdered’ technique offers a shaded effect, giving a full colour to the brow area and creating a bold finished look. For a subtler style, the ‘Ombre’ creates a gradual colour at the bulb of the brow, leading into a bold, defined tail. Finally, the ‘Combination’ option offers the best of both worlds, blending the ‘Hairstroke’ and ‘Powdered’ techniques to create a full, natural-looking brow. As part of the brow offering, digital microblading is also available, which uses digital technology and micropigmentation to update the traditional hand method of microblading. Performed with a handheld device, this method produces colour implantation in the skin and creates lifelike strokes that mimic the look of natural eyebrows. Other popular services available include semi-permanent eyeliner, to add definition and the illusion of thicker lashes to the area. Moya can even create winged eyeliner, to spare those many hours spent trying to create the perfect flick! And with lip fillers remaining one of the most popular treatments at the Medical Cosmetic Centre, it makes perfect sense to bring additional lip services to the clinic. Moya’s lip enhancement services can create the illusion of fullness, or even just a beautiful, just-bitten colour that doesn’t require a top coat of lipstick. Older women may find that as they age, their lip line becomes less defined, and they may find that lipstick begins to ‘bleed’ into the areas around the mouth. Semi-permanent lip liner can give the lips a definitive line of colour, enhancing the shape subtly, and providing an outline for lipstick, helping it to stay in place.

Instead, it’s used to enhance your natural beauty, so that you feel more comfortable without makeup and can go out with bare skin as often as you like. with a subtle shaded colour that gives lips life and colour. And for those who love the look of lipstick but don’t enjoy the maintenance, the ‘full lip colour’ service provides complete definition and colour for the lips, completely tattooing the area to create a fuller, more colourful lip in the shade of your choice; it can be customised to mimic your favourite lipstick, so you can always look your best, without the constant reapplication required. So, how does it all work? Micropigmentation is the process of applying micro-insertions of pigment, directly into the dermal layer of the skin. Artists will use a specially-designed digital machine, controlled with a sterile probe, and work carefully with each client to create a bespoke finished look that’s as natural-looking as possible. The process is very similar to conventional tattooing, in that it’s a semi-invasive procedure, but crucially, micropigmentation is far less traumatic in application, and fades over time, which allows you to change your look. The results will remain visible for a certain period of time, often determined by your skin type, age and lifestyle, and will require maintenance and a colour refresh to keep a defined look. Exactly how long the results will last differs from person to

person, as many factors need to be taken into account, such as skin type and choice of skincare. The procedure and colour choices also make a difference; for example, blondes opting for lighter-toned eyebrows will require a more frequent colour top-up than a brunette opting for a darker shade. Sun worshippers will also see their colours fade quicker due to UV light (another strong reason to stay out of the sun!). But overall, the expectation can be anywhere between six months and five years. It is crucial to remember that, as with aesthetics, the result will only ever be as good as the technician performing the procedure. At the Medical Cosmetic Centre, we pride ourselves on hiring the finest staff and trained specialist doctors, and our ethos has been no different with this expansion to our services. Moya Wren is widely renowned as being among the very best in the business, so you’ll be in safe and trusted hands. But it is key to remember that whoever you choose to visit for your semi-permanent makeup, they should be able to present to you an extensive knowledge in this very specialised field, along with all of the appropriate qualifications. Semi-permanent makeup and micropigmentation should be carried out by an artist to ensure the best and most natural-looking results. Moya Wren will be available for consultations at the Medical Cosmetic Centre from May 2018, prices start from £495 for brows and lips. For more information, visit www.drnestor.co.uk.

Blonde Ambition:

How to get a tricky transformation right By Jason Collier Using highlights or balayage is a great way to gradually lighten the hair, giving you lighter locks without the commitment of an all-over colour. These techniques will also give a much more natural look, allowing the hair to look lived-in and subtle, rather than creating a dramatic dye job with obvious roots that need re-dyeing every two weeks. Subtle balayage techniques, for me, look better than a block colour. Depending on the look that a client wants, I like to use balayage or highlights to weave the colour through the body of the hair, to give a natural, sun kissed finished effect. Using these techniques also allows the colourist to create what’s known as a ‘root drag’ – that is, gradually drawing your natural colour down from the roots and into the lightened sections, so that hair never looks obviously grown-out. Sarah Jessica Parker works this look beautifully – it looks natural and pretty, still very glamorous and much more low-maintenance than traditional highlights, applied as closely to the scalp as possible. It’s a win-win; it looks very cool, protects the hair from too much colouring, and means that you don’t have to commit to monthly root touch-ups.

I

Once you’ve got your colour, it’s time to think about the maintenance. There are hundreds of products out there for coloured hair, but how do you know which one is best for your new lighter tone? t might be one of the year’s hottest trends so far – but switching up dark locks for blonde hair can also be one of the trickiest transformations to achieve.

Colour is my forte, so I’m here to share my tips and tricks for getting the best results with what I truly believe is the most difficult (and riskiest!) of colour changes, without causing excessive damage to the hair. Most women looking to transform from brunette to blonde have a specific look or shade in mind, so the first starting point for stylists is managing expectations. Most shades of brunette can get to blonde, but depending on the darkness of the hair, the level of blonde you can achieve will vary widely. If you have very dark hair, that icy platinum blonde of your Gwen Stefani daydreams may well be out of reach – but that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t achieve a gorgeous cool blonde in a darker shade. Lightening hair dramatically is a tough task and there needs to be realistic expectations around what level of blonde the hair can actually reach; if your hair is black or deepest brown, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to reach the dizzying heights of icy blonde, without causing serious trauma to the hair.

Kim Kardashian is a major reference point when it comes to the brunette-blonde switchover, as it’s a process she’s famously gone through several times now, taking her raven hair to platinum and back again within weeks. But it is key to remember that it takes a long time, a lot of hard work and a huge amount of maintenance to get the right look. Kim has an army of hairstylists and plenty of time to spend in the salon, having her roots touched-up to keep her locks looking fresh – how many of us could say the same? The best way to achieve blonde is a gradual process. A healthy shade of blonde should be created in a gradual transition, rather than an overnight transformation. Taking brunette to blonde should be done in stages, both to maintain the health of the hair, and also to allow you to decide when to stop. If you switch from black to platinum in an afternoon and suddenly realise that the colour doesn’t suit you at all – well, there’s not much you can do without colouring the hair further. But gradually lightening the hair over a period of months allows you to live with the change and find a shade that really works for you, as well as giving the hair time to heal in-between appointments.

I would absolutely recommend that once you colour your hair, you should cut down on how often you wash it, and steer clear of any clarifying shampoos, as they will strip the colour and leave it looking dull and discoloured. Instead, use a gentle micellar shampoo every other wash, and for the washes in-between, a toning shampoo to reduce the inevitable brassiness. This is an essential step, whichever shade of blonde you’re going. A silver or purple shampoo will instantly minimise any brassy, yellow tones, and will keep the colour looking bright, ashy and fresh. However slowly and gently you’ve coloured your hair, those locks will be still be damaged

I use a clear glossing treatment regularly on Victoria Beckham so we don’t have to colour her hair too frequently, but it still looks fresh and lovely.

to an extent. So, it goes without saying that conditioning is a must; use a deepconditioning mask or treatment once a week and try a colour-protecting conditioner to keep the hair nourished and the tones nice and fresh. I always recommend in-shower glossing treatments too; you can use one every month to keep the hair looking healthy and the colour looking shiny, I use a clear glossing treatment regularly on Victoria Beckham so that we don’t have to colour her hair too frequently, but it still looks fresh and lovely. So, how often should you head into the salon with your new ‘do? It varies, depending on what you’ve opted for – there isn’t really a one-size-fits approach to haircare when you’ve opted for a dramatic change. Block colour will need a root refresh every few weeks, especially if you’ve gone for a colour that’s intensely different from your natural shade or a really icy, platinum tone. Highlights generally need a touch-up after six-eight weeks to keep them looking lovely, while balayage and root drags can wait until around ten weeks. The longer you can leave your hair between appointments, the less stress to your hair – but of course, you still want it to look great! Brunette to blonde is absolutely a tricky transformation, and to decide on the shade of blonde you want to go for, it’s always best to discuss it with your hairdresser – both to see what your hair can achieve, and also to find out which shades would work best with your complexion. Your colourist should do a strand test to see how well the hair takes the bleach, so I would urge you to ask them to go this, so that you can get a good idea of what you can

expect as a finished result. Your colourist should also be able to advise on what your skin tone is, and whether you should be aiming for a dark or light blonde, with gold or silver tones. It’s always best to go to a trusted hairdresser who has a great reputation for colour; find a stylist you like and visit them for a few appointments prior to taking the colour plunge, so that they can really get a feel for your hair, how it adapts, how it takes to certain treatments, and how quickly it grows – this way they can advise very specifically on what would work best for you, when it comes to actually colouring the hair. It can be very tempting to watch a few YouTube videos, head to your local chemist and stock up on bleach to DIY your blonde, but I would urge anybody reading this to forget about it – please don’t even attempt to take your hair blonde at home. Unless you already have blonde hair, boxed dyes or home bleaching just won’t give you the effect you’re looking for; in fact, you’re more likely to end up with yellow, dry, brittle hair that needs urgent reparation from a colour specialist. Our hair is a huge part of who we are and deserves proper care and attention – so do your homework and find a colourist you like and trust, to make sure your big transformation matches up to your blonde ambition!

FROM MEDUSA & FAME TEAM’S - Peter Mellon

Life in the fast lane It’s been all go for brand new salon owner Peter Mellon, after the opening of Medusa Stockbridge, Edinburgh in March. The past two months have seen him opening his salon, attending weddings and parties, and rushing down to London or Manchester for Fame Team events.

Salon Front The past two months have been crazy, and not just for me. I was opening my own salon as part of Medusa, so managing director of the company Colin McAndrew was just as involved and just as manic. This is us on the Tuesday. We opened on the Thursday.

Colin and Kate

Colin got married three days after later. Respect, Colin, for holding it together. It was an amazing wedding. No idea what time I got home.

Ka t e ’ s H a i r The new Mrs McAndrew had perfect hair, of course – guess who did it? Kate and I worked together at the Teviot salon for two years and she asked back then to do her hair on the big day. We created a soft and elegant look that we altered so it was even softer for later when she partied the night away.

Sa yi ng G o o d bye It was so sad leaving Medusa Teviot after nearly six years, and all my lovely peeps. They created a montage of cuttings for me from all the magazines I’ve been in. It’s so cool seeing your work and life in print. I’ve got it framed on the wall of my salon.

Fa m e Te a m Sho o t The actual Fame Team shoot was a real eyeopener. We had beautiful models and a nice tidy budget. It is amazing working with professionals of this standing including photographer Barry Jeffery, make-up artist Ingrid Petegrina McNabb and stylist Desiree Lederer. Errol was amazing with his creative direction.

S al o n S er v i ce s S h o o t In April we did a shoot for Salon Services. Errol Douglas let us prep in his salon. It’s so beautiful. Before Fame Team I could have only have seen it by skulking past his windows. Now I actually get to spend time in there.

Cl i e nt Pr i d e From day one we’ve actively asked our clients to take selfies and post them. It’s helping get our name out there. The salon has been busy but the challenge is to keep it that way. I’ve got lots of marketing ideas to drive traffic and loyalty.

A Fres h Wel come I want to do a massive shout out to my amazing clients for following me to my new salon. They are all fantastic.

Kent Br us he s

Some might think I’m mad opening my own salon while on the Fame Team journey but there are serious perks. A whole brush collection from Kent? Very nice. Mine aren’t stuck on the wall, though. They are definitely being used in the salon.

We l l a

Another trip to London, this time Wella hosted a brainstorm and refresh day for the Fame Team, where we got together with the FT mentors Nick Irwin and Andreas Stavrou to discuss our plans for Australia in June. We also recapped on our presentation skills to make sure we remembered what we learned with Simon Shaw back in February. Apparently I should smile more. But I get nervous!

Me e t i ng S y d H a ye s

The Fame Team is all about getting a unique insight into the industry that you’d only get if you were in a top London salon, maybe not even that. We aren’t just meeting our Instagram heroes, we are getting to spend time with them, listen to their history, and receive advice on how to drive our own careers. It is a total privilege. We got to spend the whole day with session stylist Syd Hayes and review his life and work. Then we went to party at the Electric Ballroom with the Fellowship.
