Attendees could watch live hair and beauty demonstrations by the salon’s assistants and graduate stylists and enjoy music with a whole host of delicious food and drink. Golden Ticket

NHF backs VAT reform

Sally Salon Services, the UK and Ireland’s leading professional supplier of hair and beauty products, is excited to launch a new competition in partnership with leading British hair electrical brand, Diva Professional Styling.

The National Hairdressers Federation (NHF) members have demanded reform on VAT registration thresholds, a very hot-button topic among hair professionals of the UK.

A golden ticket has been hidden in a single Diva product, ready and waiting for one customer to find. The competition is open to retail and trade Sally Salon Services customers – both online and in-store from July 1, with the lucky recipient will winning a trip to New York for two, plus $1,000 spending money. All Diva Professional Styling products that may contain the shiny prize will be slapped with a special display sticker, and the competition will run until the ticket is eventually found!

The current VAT threshold is £85,000, a total considerably higher than the rest of the EU where it averages at £29,000, which is more in-line with average earnings. However, the UK Government has pledged not to change the threshold before 2020. With the high level of response to the NHF call for evidence, however, suggests that long-term, things may change. The NHF is currently championing changes that have been called upon by their members, including increasing the VAT threshold for small businesses to £500,000 a measure that would benefit many salons and barber shops UK wide. Reducing the rate of VAT on labour-intensive industries, such as hairdressing and barbering where wages are the highest cost of doing business, and there is little scope for claiming

VAT back on products. Some EU member states already pay lower rates of VAT including Ireland (9%), the Netherlands (6%), Poland (8%), Finland (10%) and Luxembourg (8%). So far, the UK Government has resisted NHF calls for action on this. NHF Chief Executive, Hillary Hall, said: “The government’s call for evidence is their first step to understanding the key issues and how the current VAT policy affects different sectors. We have responded to this, and to a Treasury Committee enquiry on the same topic, to make sure the voice of the hair and beauty industry is heard loud and clear.”

BARBERNV It wouldn’t be a successful SHABA without a fantastic after-party once the celebrations and adulations are over. This year the after-party will be held in Glasgow’s renowned Corinthian Club! Standing on the site of an 18th century Virginia Mansion, constructed for the prominent city merchant George Buchanan, famed as one of the most opulent residences in all of Glasgow. The location itself symbolises the social and commercial development of Glasgow pre-20th century. While the original building was demolished to pave the way for the Glasgow and Ship Bank, and later the Bank of Scotland. In its place David Hamilton created one of the most elegantly decorated buildings, both internally and externally.

SALON In the late-90s the building was again lovingly restored and named the Corinthian. Details such as the Roman Doric pilastrade, elaborate cornicing, 26-foot glass dome, and freestanding classical figures were revealed once more and made the focus of the building’s illustrious interior. So rest assured there is no venue betting fitting to host the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards after party than the Corinthian Club. Entertainment for the after-party will be provided by Scottish old-school rave and house DJ Michael Kilkie, possibly best known for his time as one of the resident DJs in The Tunnel club. With more than two decades of clubland experience, Michael Kilkie will be bringing his smooth, deep and progressive vibes to the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards after-party. Michael is sure to make certain the Corinthian’s dance floor is packed out all night!

As the night draws closer: By the time you’re reading this edition of SalonNV, the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards will be just a few weeks away. Which isn’t too long, and as the excitement and anticipation builds, we’ll make sure to welcome yet another hugely successful and fruitful Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards. We’ll see you September 16, and good luck to all of this year’s finalists!

The Fellowship

Colour Night The TONI&GUY academy in central London played host to the latest Fellowship for British Hairdressing Colour Night, which provided a rainbow spectrum of looks to inspire and educate the sold-out audience.

Fellowship President Nominations are now open for those who think they have the mettle to become the next President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. The ultimate organisation within British hairdressing, with the role of President being as important and fulfilling, as it is challenging and busy. As the Fellowship’s current President, Karine Jackson, is entering her final term in office, nominations are now open for the next potential leader to put their name forward. One successful candidate will go on to follow in the footsteps of Joshua Galvin, Andrew Collinge and Beverly C MBE, as President of one of the most important bodies in British hairdressing. The voluntary role requires substantial commitment, as there will be regular meetings with the Council, sponsors and wider industry representatives. The President works closely with the Chairperson to plan and organise events, oversee the Fellowship magazine and awards, and further promote both the Fellowship and British hairdressing as a whole. Prospective candidates will be invited to meet with the Fellowship Council in November, to explain how they plan to endorse and enhance the Fellowship. Then the Council will decide on a Presidentelect, who will be put forward to the membership at the AGM in April. If there is widespread disapproval in regards to the choice, members can reject the choice, and the Council will be tasked with finding a more suitable nominee. There is still plenty of time for potential Presidents to throw their hat in the ring, with the final deadline being Friday, October 26. Any interested party should contact the Fellowship office on 01295 724579, or by emailing Carol@fellowshiphair.com to request a job description and more information.

Eight masters descended on the stage to demonstrate to those in attendance their colour work, showcasing looks that ranged from the bold and experimental to subtle, salon-friendly styles. First to take to the stage was Grace Dalgliesh from Brooks & Brooks, Dan Spiller from Marc Antoni, JC Aucamp from Guy Kremer and Charley Henery from TONI&GUY. The four looks represented the limitless potential of colour techniques and current trends with the industry, with a diverse array of looks. For Grace, the trend for all things natural inspired her colours of choice – pistachio, rose and sunlight yellow. Working on wet hair, her watercolour blend of pastels provided a stunningly bespoke look for the model. Dan Spiller worked with dynamic shades of lilac and creamy blonde, in another welcome nod to the on-going pastel craze. His creative placement was designed to bring the model’s directional crop to life. JC Aucamp displayed an update on the perennial client favourite; balayage. His beautiful brunette blend provided an on-point, modernised take on the technique, featuring bold panels of glossed caramel colour. Charley brought to life one of TONI&GUY’s latest hot picks, using tied-off ponytails to create bold sections. Then, Fellowship Ambassador, Bruno Marc grilled hairdressers on how much they would charge for each look, and how you, as a professional would justify the price to a prospective client. The second set of artists to take to the stage comprised of Mario Failla from The Gallery, Tara Hunter from Mahogany, Carla SalcedaVasquez from Sassoon Academy and Thomas Hills from TH1. Mario presented a dramatic colour transformation, with a soft copper, complimented with pastel detailing on a model who previously sported a deep mahogany shade. Tara made her presentation all about tonal blondes with a splash of pastel yellow, worked throughout curving sections of a bold, layered crop. Carla inspired by the metals and plastics used by iconic 60s designer, Paco Rabanne, finished her look with a clean, powerful, timeless blonde. Thomas talked all about his love for strong, powerful women – perfect for his bold, inky

shade, worn on a choppy, layered punkinspired crop. As well as demonstrating his expertise, Thomas revealed how the Fellowship impacted his career – providing him with an early platform, with led to a win at the British Hairdressing Awards, a London Fashion Week show and countless opportunities for his team. The final stage appearance of the night was from the guest of honour, Chris Williams from RUSH Hair & Beauty. An acclaimed colourist who is responsible for award-winning work which has seen RUSH awarded Artistic Team of the Year on no less than three separate occasions.

He shared his own colour journey, diverse inspirations and what the Fellowship has done for his career. As the leader of the Colour Project, Chris sees first-hand the benefits of the Fellowship’s mentoring schemes capabilities. Fellowship President and host, Karine Jackson wrapped up the evening’s proceedings by saying: “Colour is a multimillion-pound industry and one that we’re all proud to be part of. Seeing the diverse range of finished looks, techniques and trends tonight demonstrates how huge the opportunity is for this industry, and how there really is a result for every client.”

Candy rooms There’s thinking outside the box, and then there are ideas so fantastical, such as one salon in the Shawlands area of Glasgow. Candy Rooms is a unique salon bound to get tails wagging, a place where pampered pooches and their glamourous owners can receive hair and beauty treatments side-by-side. Our furry friends can even get a little taste of paw-secco and a fragrant splash of paw-fume so they can enjoy the same self-love experiences as us.

Tucked down a lane in Glasgow’s south side, Owner of Candy Rooms, Johnny Palmer, once used the space, which would ultimately become Candy Rooms as a storage space for the costumes and wigs he used to fit for soap operas, blockbusters and yearly pantomime performances.

The concept for Candy Rooms came about when Johnny was working with resident hairstylist, Barbra on the set of the BBC’s River City. Johnny knew he wanted to create a space where customers wouldn’t need to hire a dog-walker to come in and could enjoy truly inclusive pampering with the entire family.

Johnny spoke at great length about the increasing popularity of the salon, due in part to the extensive media coverage in recent weeks. Which is fully deserved, and as Johnny wants to take his humble idea even further, offering pampered pooches not only baths and styles, but massages and spa-style treatments so they can relax alongside their owners receiving the same pampering.

Johnny told SalonNV: “There are a lot more dog-friendly businesses up this way, and that was kind of the idea behind this place. I was working with Barbra on the set of River City, where I was doing the costumes and she was doing the make-up, and we thought what a great idea it would be to combine everything and do something a wee bit different.

“A lot of the girls want to come and get their

hair done, their nails done on a Friday or Saturday, and they want to spend time with the dogs. At least here, they can bring their dogs in, so we can take them on a big walk or Bea can give them a pampering session and get a treatment. “Bea’s fantastic, you know we’ve only been open about seven or eight weeks and that’s everyone coming back in after that time. You know, the dog’s get the full treatment, they get a certificate, a bone and a wee bow all the fun wee things. I think the dog grooming aspect of the salon will eventually take over, especially with the clothing brand we’re getting in and the publicity we’re getting from the likes of STV and The Sun.”

One of the busiest and most talked about elements of Candy Rooms is of course the petfriendly services offered, as Dog Groomer Bea is starting to pick-up more than just canines. “Bea’s getting a lot busier; she’s getting all sorts of pets now, from cats to long haired guinea pigs,” Johnny told us. “But, people will pay money, I know what it’s like, I got a wee rescue dog two-years-ago, and I know if you have the money you’ll spend it on our pets.” Johnny comes off as a man ever-ambitious, looking for new ways to think outside the box and continually offer new and innovative ideas to the already glittering Candy Rooms menu. Offering something more than other salons has been the ethos Candy Rooms has subscribed ==============to, and it shows in the beaming manner Johnny spoke about the future. Johnny and Candy Rooms Massage Therapist Tracey are even in discussions to offer dog-massages, to make Candy Rooms and inclusive space for humans and animals alike. “We need to do other things that salons won’t do,” Johnny said. “Bea’s getting a new bath in for the bigger dogs, tooth and gum treatments for the dogs because the Vets were charging £200 a time for that, and no other groomers are offering that. We wanted to think outside the box because everyone else is offering the same services.” Make sure to keep your eyes peeled as the dog-friendly business is looking to start offering pampered princess parties. Where extension artist Chelsea and make-up artist Sofii will give girls and their friends the princess treatment, they can come and get their hair, make-up and nails done, as well as getting their cake and a visit from a princess!

EpiBrow Launches Suga Sista Louise Brannigan the mastermind behind EpiBrow and now the new waxing brand that is set to sweep the beauty industry, Suga Sista. SalonNV were lucky enough to visit the glamourous video shoot for the brand’s launch last month. Louise is best known for founding the UK’s best eyebrow training academies with her brand EpiBrow. A brand with a revolutionary approach to beauty and education that has transformed perceptions of the industry, creating a more ethical product range which has been lauded by therapists all across the world since their launch. Regarding the launch of Suga Sista, Louise Bannigan said: “The launch of this product at our video shoot yesterday was off the wall, with such an amazing response from everyone. We’re just about to launch HELLO LASHES, a revolutionary lash treatment to blow all others out the water… Watch this space! “We’re actually getting ready for a big launch next month. We’re working with a Scottish PR company who’ve had so many great ideas on how to market the launch, and we’ve always got a few tricks up our sleeves as well!” Suga Sista is launching two products right out of the gate, Your Loss for eyebrows and a bikini waxing sugar paste. And, following suit with EpiBrow’s HELLOHENNABROWS, which Louise has launched in Dubai to industry acclaim, Suga Sista is 100% vegan, crueltyfree and has been exclusively developed for EpiBrow with all natural ingredients. Louise said: “The products are all natural, they’re just lemon juice and sugar paste. A lot of beauty therapists have taken interest in the products because it’s a lot less painful than us waxing, there’s less reddening to the skin, and you can get more advanced shapes around the brows because the products are translucent. “There’s a huge gap in the market for eyebrow and waxing products that are completely vegan,” Louise told us. “Younger and older girls want to work with more ethically minded products and brands, and of course people are more conscious about the products they’re using. It’s something we want more salons to be using. We know most salons and therapists will love the results they see from Suga Sista.” This is an incredible ethos, and something EpiBrow kept at its core, which Suga Sista has reflected in their branding, the visually quirky designs created by artist and EpiBrow team member Laura Monaghan, harken back to a

more natural time, perfectly encapsulating the brand’s organic and all natural ingredients. The branding, much like the products themselves are as Louise describes “creative and forward thinking,” and are a testament to how everything Suga Sista has an edge over the rest of the industry. “Suga Sista is a product that has been very appealing to UK salons, and salons should be more aware of what’s in the products they’re

selling and using, because the amount of rubbish that can be in them is shocking!” EpiBrow’s revolutionary approach to beauty has transformed perceptions of the industry, creating a more edgy, ethical product range which has been snapped up by therapists all over the globe since its launch earlier this year, including US celebrity eyebrow artist Elke Von Freudenberg who will be shaping things up HELLOHENNABROWS style during New

York Fashion Week in September. “Most students have already got the products in their hands when they come to our Glasgow and Leeds academies, and they’re really attracted to them because there’s nothing currently in the industry like it,” Louise told SalonNV. “The whole vegan concept is so big in America, and anything that get big stateside will eventually trickle to the UK. And we want tbe at the forefront of producing more ethically responsible products. products. With the official launch of Suga Sista a month away, we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer to see everything that Louise has in store for the industry. But, if it’s anything like what the SalonNV team saw during their video shoot it’s going to be an unstoppable and unmatchable entity in the beauty industry. Therapists should get ready for Suga Sista to be their new go to product, and the industry at large should follow suite of the ethical nature present in everything Suga Sista, and indeed Louise lends her hand to!

We want to be at the forefront of producing more ethically responsible products.

Good Deed donation from local Colliers Wood child The Little Princess Trust, was originally set-up in 2005 by the parents and headmaster of five-year-old Hannah Tarplee who died of cancer. The charity supplies and funds the creation of high-quality wigs made from donated human hair, for children who have lost theirs as the result of treatments such as chemotherapy. Marlie Hubbard has always been proud of her long champagne blonde locks, but the brave eight-year-old was happy to see them cutoff for a very worthy cause. The pretty youngster is the daughter of a regular client at the awardwinning Kartee M boutique hair salon in Colliers Wood, south west London. When she heard about the wonderful work done by the Little Princess Trust, Marlie decided she wanted to donate her own long tresses for

those undergoing cancer treatments. Salon owner Tee carefully cut-off nearly a foot of hair to be sent to the charity, giving Marlie a stylish short cut she was thrilled with. “It’s very inspiring that an eight-year-old wanted to do this,” said Tee. “It was all her own idea, she knew exactly what she wanted to be done and her mum wasn’t involved at all. “Although Marlie said she would miss her long hair, she loved the idea it would help another little girl. She also really liked her new style, and I think it is excellent that when someone with long hair wants a restyle, and the hair can be put to a good purpose. “Our salon is known as the home of sustainable beauty, and we go to great lengths to be very sustainable, recycling everything possible. Hair is now becoming one of the main things to recycle and when it goes to a good cause like the Little Princess Trust, that is the perfect solution.”

paul mac The hair and beauty industry has also been pushed forward by innovative practitioners; creative voices talk louder, faster and more clearly than any other. And, for some their work speaks volumes, and this is undoubtedly true of Irish barber Paul Mac. Here, Irish Barber of the year, and all-around statement visionary Paul Mac, @paulmacspecial on Instagram, talks to SalonNV on his most recent collections, with an emphasis on the Nobodies photoset, which captivated the entire office.

I

f you’ve seen Paul’s social media posts, then you’ll already be well aware that a lot of his work has an inescapable avant-garde edge. Not the least visible through the stunning Nobodies collection, a dark, twisted fantasy collection, taking so many of Paul’s collective inspirations from music, to cinema into pieces that are visually stunning.

all of the people all of the time, but that’s a sign you're making an impact. I’d rather be marmite than vanilla, many produce the same old collections over and over, I wanna be a chameleon-like Bowie and keep reinventing myself.

Those with a keen eye will notice that we’ve showcased Paul’s work in previous editions but being able to pick Paul’s mind as given new depth to his work, past, present, and future. No matter the colours or the shapes displayed in Paul’s work, you cannot escape the gothic influences, his technical dexterity and vision is a marvel. You would have to scour social media for quite a while to find work utilising such harsh lines, and yet, remaining remarkably soft and familiar.

PM: Well, as I write this I’m preparing to head off to the Behind the Chair #oneshot awards in Texas. I had the most amazing experience last year meeting idols of mine, winning my category was the icing on the cake, with my acceptance speech about being a black sheep and an underdog going viral, It was such a surreal experience! Then, I plan to take a few months off, apart from working in my shop as I’ve crammed in five Collections the 1st six months of the year and I wouldn’t recommend it! As I’m getting married to my amazing and extremely patient fiancé Charlotte on October 27, so I promised her I’d take some time off as for the last five years I’ve had four weeks off and I’m always obsessing 24/7 making mood-boards, working on edits and everything else.

SNV: We could see from your Instagram that you’re a Marilyn Manson fan. Was he your main inspiration behind The Nobodies collection and if so what other influences did you draw from? PM: Marilyn Manson’s iconic music video for The Nobodies was my initial and main inspiration for the collection. The Nobodies is also based on some of my favourite influences, mainly 80s Horror and Sci-Fi, including Clie Barker’s Cenobites from Hellraiser, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu and the macabre avant-garde style of Robert Maiscave, Alexander McQueen, and Commes De Garcons. SNV: Have you got any ideas for other similar collections in the works? PM: Yes, I’ve got a few ideas for my next avant-garde collection in mind, but I never tell anyone my creative concepts apart from my creative team as it wrecks the big reveal! SNV: Where do you see your work going in the future? PM: It’s hard to know, I’m very impulsive and I’m always changing things up and making it up as I go! I want to be an innovator and I’ve learned you can’t please

42 | SalonNV Magazine

SNV: Do you have any plans for the rest of the year and the start of 2019?

SNV: You retained your Irish Barber of the Year and won Best Men’s commercial image this year, how has 2018 been for you though? PM: And we were finalists for Artistic Team of the Year for the second year running with The Nobodies collection which was a huge undertaking for me, being predominately a barber it was only my second ever female shoot and first avant-garde. SNV: How do you plan to push things in 2019? PM: I don’t wanna give much away, but I wanna keep up-skilling in longer hair and in the avant-garde. I like to blend genres and as I finish this interview on my journey home from Behind the Chair (BTC) in Texas I feel really inspired by the world-class images and stage work I’ve seen. I find the commercial staff very boring so you should expect a bit of a shock factor I guess!

SNV: How does it feel being made a brand ambassador for Denman? PM: Amazing! To become a Denman ambassador is such an honour such an iconic brand, and it came about by chance when I got chatting to Maria Stafford at Barber Connect and I was asked on the spot, it made my weekend! It’s a massive career boost as everyone even non-hair professionals people know Denman, and it’s so cool to see my designs myself and my designer Ryan Long created immortalised, it’s very surreal to hold them in your hand, Ryan is super talented and never lets me down with shoot edits, he’s like my right-hand man. SNV: What films have you seen recently you can recommend to the readers? PM: I don’t get to watch much as I’d like, the last few years but on the plane to BTC I watched Infinity War and Ready Player 1, both were great! I love sci-fi and horror. My top horror films as we are in the season are Hellraiser one and two, Bram Stokers Dracula, Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm St and Edward Scissorhands is my favourite movie of all time always makes me cry! Oh, I Love Gremlins too. SNV: Since the season is upon us, can you give us your ideal Halloween party playlist? This is Halloween - Marilyn Manson Sleepwalking – Bring me the Horizon My Curse - Killswitch Engage One - Metallica Falling away from me - Korn all these things I hate - BFMV bring me to life - Evanescence Psychosocial - Slipknot Wait & Bleed - Slipknot Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson The Nobodies - Marilyn Manson Thriller - Michael Jackson

Bonnie Quines Andrea Waddell created Bonnie Quines beauty salon in 2011, which now stands as a 1,300 square foot, two-floor premises, operating from a historic RBS building in the heart of Lothian. The name Bonnie Quines, translates from old Scots to mean pretty lasses or girls, perfectly reflecting the salon’s modus operandi. Andrea’s vision of providing incredible service in a comforting, relaxed atmosphere still lasts to this day, only it’s gotten a lot bigger! Explaining the origins of Bonnie Quines, Andrea said: “I began in 2011 as a mobile lash and spray-tan technician in my wee Bonnie Quines Corsa, with her own wee Lashes over the headlights! “However, client demand for nails was so high that I took on training. I did nails at kitchen tables, sometimes working till midnight to keep up with client demand. It progressed from there and that’s when I knew I “Don’t ever think you know it all, because there is always something new to learn, and some amazing new techniques come out weekly!” Currently, in the process of setting up a training academy, Andrea intends to see Bonnie Quines expand even further, taking up residences in Edinburgh and Glasgow. However, as she explained: “Our main priority in the next few months is to open our holistic room and lash bar with dedicated services like Indian Head Massaging.” When speaking about education it’s hard to deny the energy and support emanating from Andrea and her team. Recognising the need for positive support within the industry, she said: “You may find you are knocked back and knocked down - I was! But, I came back stronger and I worked harder. It’s why I am where I am today and why I support my girls the way I do. “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other

successful women who have her back! Don’t forget this, we are there to support each other, if our crowns fall, then we’ll be the first to bend down and pick that crown up for her.” Andrea puts the success of her salon down to her team and their emphasis on customer care. At Bonnie Quines clients come to be pampered, fussed over and be treated like Queens! They’ve thought of every possibility, if a client needs to chill, the quiet rooms and zen music will be your haven. If you’re needing to be cheered up, then the staff are on-hand, bounce off, laugh with and as Andrea told us: “We have the best cuddles this side of the east and west. “The girls and I have such a bond and the team is one of the best I have ever had. We work so well together and the clients feed off this. Anyone walking into the salon can’t help but feel comfortable, each and every client gets a big hi, bye and leaves with a smile.”

needed to get a fixed location. I moved into a two-room property in January 2013 and within two months had already taken on another room. Less than two years later I had eight rooms, which was the whole side of the premises!” In August last year, Andrea moved into an old Royal Bank building on the main street in Broxburn, and from there Bonnie Quines has continued to blossom. Having won or finalised for nine awards since 2014, including our very own Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards. Andrea told SalonNV her winning formula: “We put our girls through continued training. It is all about furthering your own abilities, every day is a school day.

NEW SHOPS

Anne Veck Salons After 15 years in Bicester, Anne Veck has relocated the salon to a redeveloped shopping centre in the heart of the town centre, only a five minute walk from Bicester Village outlet centre. Inspired by a visit to a salon in Namibia, South Africa, Anne has re-created her salon as an environmentally conscious space, using recycled and reconstituted materials, furnitured to reduce the business’ carbon footprint. Designed by Anne herself and built by Anne, her two brothers Eric and Sylvain, partner Keith and nephew – making the construction of her new salon a real family affair. In August 2017 Anne and Keith were in Namibia and stumbled across a stunning salon, Ilana’s Hair Gallery, in Swakopmund. The interior design used all recycled, reconstituted materials, furniture and iron work, rescued from demolition sites, bought at auction or from second-hand shops. Combining this inspiration with their commitment to being as eco-friendly as possible, the result has an industrial, stripped-back feel, while still airy and well-lit, the salon has lost none of its welcoming nature. The salon uses bio-degradable Easy Dry towels, which reduce hot water use and avoid landfill disposal, LED energy efficient lighting throughout, recycled card and paper for all stationery with carbon positive printing from local eco printers Seacourt, plus 100% carbon neutral telephone calls and broadband. The salon also uses infrared heaters made from recycled materials, which are designed to consume 60% less energy than standard convection heaters and produce no CO2. Anne, Eric and Sylvain (who came over from France to assist) made the reception desk, styling stations, the colour table, retail display, colour bar and cupboards! You name it, they designed and built it! The coffee table, magazine racks and selfie-wall were all from recycled pallets and cable drums, with the focal feature being the round colour table in the centre of the salon made from a huge cable drum. Anne sanded and varnished it, put plug sockets in so clients can charge their phones and created a space for them to sit and read, work and chat…much better than staring at yourself in a mirror! Clients love it and it’s become the communal hub of 17 Crown Walk, Bicester OX26 6HY the salon and they can help themselves to limitless tea, coffee and cold drinks too.

PerPLEXed no more A explanatiom of plex technology

M

any brands have cropped-up since the introduction of plex around five-years-ago, and it’s only recently the products have been on the home market. However, It’s true when it comes to plex, a subfix now all too common in the hair and beauty industry, that things can get a little confusing. Previously, plex has only been available in salons, however, there has now been a rush of for home use products utilising plex technologies, but what does it actually do? Well, to put it simply plex technology repairs damaged hair; the active ingredients repair hair, seeking out broken bonds at the molecular level. When plex is added to products during the colouring process, the hair is repaired and strengthened during the process itself. Plex was invented to restructure the bonds in the hair, creating a solid surface, increasing the integrity of the hair. Plex products also retain the pH values of hair to a certain level, meaning that they won’t swell, therefore water cannot pass in and out, and more importantly, newly istalled colour can’t pass in and out. However, the subject has been made all the more confusing due to a recent court battle between Olaplex and L’Oréal, with the former citing patent infringement suit against the latter. In November 2016 Olaplex launched a lawsuit against L’Oréal in the UK, the case alleged that L’Oréal’s Smartbond Step 1 product infringed on the patent of Olaplex’s No.1 Bond Multiplier.

A spokesperson for Olaplex said: In 2015, seeing Olaplex’s tremendous success in the marketplace, L’Oréal sought to acquire the company sharing with Olaplex in good faith, confidential information. L’Oréal ceased negotiation talks, and less than a year later launched products, that has now been demonstrated in the UK high court to infringe on Olaplex’s patented technology.

The next legal step would be an injunction and a hand-over of L’Oreal’s remaining stock of the product. However, the case is still to be decided on stateside after being initially thrown out of court. L’Oreal has said they “strongly disagree” with the decision, and are waiting for permission to launch their appeal. But this begs the question, which of the products are the best for your needs, your hair and will actively provide the best results? Here are some of the best plex products currently on the market and what they can do for your hair, as chosen by the SalonNV team!

Hormonal Help Don’t suffer menopause symptoms in silence says Dr Nestor Demosthenous. Ageing may be a fact of life, but that doesn’t always make it easy to deal with. The ageing process affects different parts of the body at various stages of our life cycle. For example, skin starts to age from as early as the mid-20s, while our liver has proteins that are regularly replenished; it does a fantastic job of regenerating itself and is one of the organs that best defies the ageing process. It is, however, the decline in a woman’s fertility that can cause physical and emotional symptoms range from mild to severe and can be particularly problematic to deal with.

Female fertility begins to decline at around 35-years-old, as both the number and quality of eggs present in the ovaries begins to fall. The menopause is a natural part of the ageing process usually occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. In the UK, the average age for a woman to begin the menopause is 51-yearsold, although around one in 100 women will experience the menopause before they are 40-years-old. It is predicted by 2030, one third of women will be living half of their lives postmenopausal, so it makes sense for those lives to be as active, healthy and fulfilling as possible, which is why we now offer bioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) at Dr Nestor’s Medical & Cosmetic Centre, Edinburgh. Like for like BHRT can help women cope with any number of issues caused by the menopause. Bio-identical hormones are different from those used in traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in that they have the same chemical structure as naturally occurring hormones produced by the body. Their chemical structure is identical to our own hormones, and the effects and benefits replicate them closely. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, have a similar chemical structure, but not exactly the same as the hormones produced by the human body. These chemical differences can mean that synthetic hormones act differently and can produce different effects. bio-identical hormones can, therefore, be beneficial to patients who have a hormonal-imbalance or have previously tried other hormonal medications, such as HRT, and experienced sideeffects. Men and women can both benefit from BHRT. In the case of men, it can help treat symptoms of hormonal-imbalance and andropause (male menopause), which can include fatigue and a decrease in libido, attributed to a gradual decline in natural testosterone levels. For women, BHRT can provide relief from a wide range of symptoms experienced during the menopause and other hormone-related conditions, such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), postnatal depression, endometriosis and menstrual problems. Time to talk Just one generation ago, the menopause was rarely discussed; however recent years have seen a rise in the number of women in the spotlight turning this attitude on its head, discussing just how they are coping with the symptoms. From Angelina Jolie to Kim Cattrall, women are speaking out, which is helping to educate and inform those experiencing symptoms and of the treatments available. Some women experience the menopause earlier however, which is known as premature menopause, and can be a result of surgeries, such as a hysterectomy, or damage done to the ovaries. Natural menopause is considered a normal part of ageing and is a gradual process that has three stages. The perimenopause starts several years before menopause when the ovaries start to make less oestrogen. This can last-up until menopausal onset, the stage when ovaries stop releasing eggs all together. The final two years of perimenopause, as the reduction in oestrogen production speeds-up, is the time when many women experience menopause symptoms. Symptoms range in severity between women and can include hot flashes: a sudden feeling of warmth that spreads over the upper body, often with blushing and some sweating, which can range in severity. Further symptoms include irregular or missed periods, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue and depression, as well as headaches, aching joints, vaginal dryness, a loss of libido and bladder control problems. Not all women will experience every symptom, and if they do, the severity of cases will range from one woman to another. If you have any particular concerns, a simple blood test will determine if you are approaching menopause.

Bespoke treatment At our Edinburgh clinic, we carry out a comprehensive consultation and appropriate testing to evaluate the full picture. If a hormonal imbalance is diagnosed, personalised treatment plans for bio-identical hormones is created specifically for each individual client. Medication is usually prescribed as a lozenge or cream, formulated for each patient’s individual requirements. The treatment plans always include regular follow-ups and ongoing monitoring to help achieve the best results possible. Our patients’ care and safety are central to everything that we do, and our thorough treatment plans and tests enable the team to work closely with each individual patient. Sharing knowledge Our women’s health team, led by Dr Rosy Fazzi, is passionate about educating and helping women understand what is happening in their bodies at the different stages of their lives. We believe that the more knowledge, understanding and guidance that a patient has in relation to her own situation and requirements allows her to take control of both her health and

life, boosting confidence and helping her to make well-informed decisions. As a woman progresses through each phase of menopause, hormone levels can fluctuate significantly. Vital hormones, such as oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, remain important for bones, vaginal and urethral tissues, brain function and cardiovascular health. Balancing and replenishing these hormones remains vital for the maintenance of a woman’s health, energy, and mood. Our team has benefitted from extensive training at The Marion Gluck Clinic in London, pioneers in personalised medicine and care. We believe a thorough consultation and the results of appropriate tests form the basis to develop a bespoke treatment for each individual’s needs, and that is exactly what we offer at our Edinburgh clinic. One size rarely fits all in any situation, and when it comes to treating the symptoms of menopause, everyone’s experience is different and should be treated as such. The truth about training Words by: Emil McMahon I’ve long been an advocate of regular training in all elements of hairdressing, not just cutting, colouring and styling, but every aspect of salon life. From greeting a client to taking the bill, to posting on social media and inbetween that is a part of the client’s visit, there is a need to refresh teams’ approach to the experiences a client has when she walks into a hairdressing salon, that’s why education and regular training is so important. My advice, as a starting point for any training, is to have the session built around your needs. That’s why the training I deliver, as an independent consultant, be it focussed on customer service, retailing, social media or any other aspect of salon life is always created around the specific needs of the business I’m working with. Off the shelf training is old school, and it no longer fits the needs of a modern-day salon. For sure everyone needs to know the basics, especially when it comes to the core skills of hairdressing, but everything else, all the other educational pieces need to be created to fit your business model, otherwise what you offer is just the same as every other salon. Training is more than a one-off session every now and again, and my ultimate aim is to encourage salons to use any training that I or any other educator delivers as a catalyst for change and as a point of reference used regularly to maintain the standards of excellence required to keep a salon working at optimum levels. If a session has an impact it can last for a while and salons will witness an upturn in productivity, but if the information isn’t revisited regularly it will fall by the wayside, and the changes will be short lived. Recently, I hosted a collective training session for salon owners called #futureproof, yes it has the ubiquitous hashtag, and the day looked at what salons need to do to survive the death of the high street as we know it, and how change must be embraced to keep hairdressing businesses fully functioning. One of the key outcomes the group arrived at was the absolute need to be different for clients who always search for something new, but to also be consistent for existing clients who like what they like and visit because they always get what they hope for. For me, having been involved in education and training for almost 30-years, I see a need for training to be implemented more frequently and with greater scope than learning about the next balayage technique, no offence to educators who teach colour but…. Salons have to offer more than a beautiful colour, a stunning haircut and a fabulous blow-dry. What needs to happen is hairdressers have to embrace the changes in modern business and create something unique that keeps existing clients excited and also encourages new clients to walk through the door. What might that change be? Check back in the next issue of SalonNV for some ideas you can implement in your business. Emil McMahon offers bespoke in-salon and collective training. ERIN Gavin in LA Do you ever just feel like you’re in a good place in life, I hope it’s a yes! Do you ever feel like you should pinch yourself when something amazing happens? It happened to me a month ago while I was nursing a hangover back in my hometown of Glasgow. The phone rang, it was a Los Angeles number, it was a friend of mine calling from his production office. He said “They want you for the movie!” At first I asked what the movie was, since we go for auditions quite often; he replied saying it was the movie we had spoken about a year ago. “They researched you and interviewed you,” He told me. “And, now they want to book you for the lead female role.” My column is the first publication where this is getting announced... naturally. Do you have a wee excited dance that you do, I’m sure you do, I sure do... hands up in the air, looking like I’m going to pee my pants! So, right now in amongst the chaos of life I have to learn 122-pages of dialogue, and get on a plane to India next month! Since going to India, I have been researching the dress-code and beauty products to buy there! The bright, bold colours are so beautiful and their herbal beauty remedies are a must to

sample. Whilst I was in Europe I went to London to visit family and friends, who turned up the heat? We went to see Justin Timberlake with one of my best friends, what a gig! Paris was next, to see friends, and to watch the FIFA World Cup final between France and Croatia. As you can imagine, the atmosphere in Paris was electric. Everyone was singing and dancing in the streets; what a feeling! If they had lost, I’m sure it would have been the opposite. Next World Cup I recommend going or going to one of the finalists cities to soakup the atmosphere. I love the fashion in London and Paris. Both cities have so much diversity and style, as does LA, but, its super casual even for a big night out or red carpet event. Talking about red carpets I went to the fashion awards, and even then the look was cool and casual. The odd person had the typical over the top Lady Gaga-esque style, but for the most part understated was the look for LA this summer. I attended a super cool event with my friend Cindy who took me to the Beverly Wilshire hotel, which was featured in the movie Pretty Women, to a beauty event. This was beauty heaven, with no treatment under $300, but

that day it was as all free. I had a B12 shot, massage, IV drip and even had this frozen machine blasted on my face, it’s very popular in LA! It’s said to make your skin glow and help you to lose weight, and to do that, you basically stand in a freezing cold room for three-minutes and pay $300 for the privilege. I would suggest saving that money and going to Scotland in the winter and just standing outside for free... it’s the same thing really. I just left an art gallery opening in Santa Monica and met the two directors from Belgium getting ready to shoot Bad Boys 3! Of course I said I want a part! They were such cool guys, that’s what I love about LA, it’s full of creative nice people you can meet who make things happen. On the way home from the art gallery we decided to do something revolutionary and go into a weed shop called Mad Men, where you can walk in and buy weed in any form... bubble bath, electric cigarettes with weed, candy, protein bars, condoms and even get sexual gum with weed, this crazy list goes on… Only in LA! On that note; I’m now very sleepy, good night. SalonNV Magazine | 63

JASON COLLIER A u t u m n H a i r Tr e n d s By Jason Collier Summer has been majorly hot this year and easy, carefree styling has been this season’s perfect partner, but another season is on the horizon and with that comes a whole host of new trends to keep an eye on. Hairstylist to a glittering roll call of celebrity stars, Jason Collier gives SalonNV the lowdown on his favourite looks from the AW18 runways and how to recreate them!

misting of a thickening spray that instantly adds volume to hair that you’ll need for a thicker texture. Then separate the hair into a top and bottom section, back-brushing the underside of the top section until it has doubled in volume. Flip the hair back and lightly smooth over the top, before pinning into a beehive shape, shaping with your free hand as you go. Mist the hair with a stronghold hairspray to finish.

Messy buns Thanks to Meghan Markle making the look her own, and putting the effortless, messy bun firmly back in the spotlight, the topknot is going to remain a key look for the months ahead. This year however, it’s getting a highfashion makeover thanks to Chanel, showing models strutting their stuff down AW18 catwalks with the easiest, most stylish up-dos in town. Perfect for elevating your daytime look or adding a touch of Parisian-style to your evening outfit, a messy topknot will always be a classic. But, don’t be fooled by it’s easy appearance – this level of messy takes a lot of effort to get just right. If you want to recreate this style, start off by spritzing a texturising spray, or even a dry shampoo into the roots of your hair to pad it out and enhance the volume for a really lifted, full look. Take a teasing brush and back-brush the hair all over, paying extra-attention to the sides of your hair and the crown area, then lightly smooth over that top layer, brushing the hair back gently. Dip your head forward and scoop your hair into a ponytail at the crown, and fasten with a no-snag band, and wrap the ponytail round before pinning into place with Kirby grips. Make sure it’s not too neat and tidy, and don’t be afraid to use your teasing brush to loosen areas and create extra volume. Mist with a light hairspray to set the look and your messy bun is good to go. Retro rock’n’roll For me, the autumn/winter months always feel like the perfect time for retro influences in hair. Bouffant styles and vintage-inspired looks work beautifully with frilled collars, knitted jumpers and oversized coats, so winter-wear is the perfect partner. I love the idea of mixing influences, like blowsy French 1960s hair blended with a little touch of punky rebellion, which was just the look seen on Miu Miu’s AW18 runway. The super-stylish high fashion Italian brand really went for it, creating huge beehive styles with a rough, raw texture that looked incredibly cool. To get the look, arm yourself with some heavy-duty products and a teasing brush; this is a look that will take some work, but the results are worth it. Prep the hair with a

It is never a surprise to see perfect Frenchgirl hair on the Isabel Marant catwalk. This is one of my favourite looks; glossy, healthy and so relaxed, it’s the holy grail of hairstyles in my opinion. Of course, as with all of these “effortless” styles, it takes a lot of work to get hair looking that good. Your hair needs to be in tip-top condition for this style to look its best. Consider using a hair mask once a week to boost hair’s health and shine. If you are unsure what might work best for your hair type, ask your stylist what they think - they will be more than happy to advise on what products work best for any concerns you have. Wash and treat the hair with a shineboosting shampoo and conditioner, and once you have squeezed excess moisture out of your hair and it has dried off a little, apply a moisturising cream, before leaving to dry. When it’s about 80% dry, twist it into a low, loose knot and leave it to dry completely. When hair is totally dry, undo the knot, shakeout the hair and part it in the centre. Hair should have a healthy, natural shine and a lovely loose bend, with plenty of movement. Don’t worry too much about styling the hair, the beauty of this look is in its insouciance. Mist with a light-hold hairspray and a shine spray, and then tuck the hair loosely behind the ears. Et voila! Ponytails

Relaxed blow-dry The blow-dry is the perfect way to create glamorous hair and feel really special, but it’s something that usually takes a lot of time and effort. Thankfully, the look is taking a new direction for AW18. Often inspired by Hollywood icons of a bygone era, this season’s blow-dry is more relaxed, making it ideal for dressing-down a dazzling party look. To recreate the look, towel-dry hair before spritzing with a light texturising product - I like Shea Moisture’s Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Texture Spray - to encourage body and texture. Next, roll the hair up into two loose side buns, and then use a diffuser to dry the hair. Unravel the buns once the hair is dry, spritz in a lightweight dry shampoo to add more texture and volume, and remove some of that freshly-washed shine, to create a slightly more worn look. To add shape, use a wide-barrelled tong and wrap the hair loosely around it, stretching the hair as you release it to create bounce without too much structure. Run your hands through the waves and you’re done – a timeless, utterly glamorous look. French-girl hair

For those days when you really don’t have much time to spend on your hair, take inspiration from Valentino’s models and work that ponytail! Forget severe and slicked back, this season’s ponytails should have softness to them, with wisps framing the face, all adding up to a super feminine look. You want to keep the style light and relaxed, which all of those wispy bits will help to achieve. Wrapping a strand of hair around the ponytail hair elastic to cover it, making the style look far more pulled together and to top this off it’s a look that can literally be done on the run.

Autumn / Winter months always feel like the perfect time for retro influences in hair.

Goodluck to all of the shaba18 finalists!

More than just a barber It all starts with a space, an idea and a dream. When two local businesses start to work together, there is always a plan… or is there? Ross Carter and Ross Miller are both local business owners within the Falkirk area, and have been for many years, the Ross Carter barber shop has been in Laurieston for 18-years, and Renella is celebrating 49-years in service, with the big 5-0 in 2019!

to Ross Carter “if you ever want to grow your business and have a second shop then maybe this is where you could do it,” it made perfect sense and meant the space will be used as a shop and academy more. I know, you’re all reading this and thinking “well we all knew this was where it was going and yeah it does make sense, how did you not just think of this sooner?” Simply, the truth

With Renella expanding their training arm nearly two-years-ago into Medusa Training, which is constantly growing, and more salons are asking for help to deliver good quality training. So, it’s fair to say that it wouldn’t just be in hairdressing, we always knew barbering would come knocking, asking to help support them in either becoming a barber, perhaps moving from hairdressing into barbering, or starting from scratch. To allow us to do this we needed a barber, and not just anyone, but a barber that has the qualifications to be able to teach at a high level. The best part was Ross Carter was not only a barber, but he has the qualifications to be able to teach barbering and amazingly he is right on our doorstep as well, you can’t get much better than that. So, after meeting with Ross and discussing the opportunity, he was in exactly the same place in wanting to educate and share good practices with other barbers or prospective. Ross has been in the hair and barbering industry since 1998, qualifying in Level 2 Hairdressing before making the switch to barbering, gaining his level 2 and 3 Barbering prior to the turn of the millennium. He opened his own barber shop in Laurieston, Falkirk, building his reputation and clientele and soon became a firm favourite in the town. He then went on to gain his assessor’s award in 2008, knowing education and teaching and sharing his passion was something he always wanted to be part of. Additionally he has worked alongside Forth Valley College and learned a lot about the delivery and planning of qualifications.

is, it wasn’t something in mine or Ross’ mind, our whole mission was to create a space for education. So, fast forward around six-months and we now have barbers using the shop and academy daily from Tuesday through to Saturday, and we run courses on either Sundays or Mondays. So, the education side of the business? What are we doing? The educational side of things is going to be amazing, we have some great courses planned to help students improve their skills, new starts who want to become barbers

This is where the plan actually stopped however, we knew we wanted to run courses and educate, we had the space upstairs at Renella, we even had a barber, Ed, who was already using this space as a barber shop, but never did we think of expanding the Ross Carter brand into it, until one night we sat chatting about courses and the amazing opportunities we can deliver. By chance I said

Level 2 and 3 Barbering Qualifications

All these courses are popular and needed within our industry; personally, our favourite courses are the Hairdresser to Barber and Barber to Male Hairdresser. Having Ross Carter as our educator is really going to help the students develop their skills, in a perfect environment and with the perfect platform to do so. Level 2 and 3 qualifications are something we’re really pushing this coming year; we are implementing an Introduction to Barbering course, which leads into the full qualifications seamlessly. We strongly believe in qualifications and want to help in making them as good as they can be. We also run a course which helps fill gaps for many students, the technical units only of Level 3 Barbering, this is for anyone that already has a Level 3 in hairdressing and doesn’t need re-do the full qualification. We get a lot of colleges asking us for this course, which is fantastic as this helps them run barbering qualifications. We have also got the support from the British Barbers Association (BBA) who are the committed to raising the standards in barbering not only in the UK but globally. In March this year, we were the hosts for the BBA regional saving competition, which was a fantastic event to have at our academy, and we hope to support and bring as many events as possible to Scotland and all the amazing barbers we have here.

Now into 2018, after becoming a British Master Barber, a Master Craftsman of the Barber Council, and with two UK barber battle finalist places in 2015 and 2016, its time to expand and finally establish an academy. This was the beginnings of our barbering academy.

to be different from woman’s, hairlines are shaped differently, there are a lot of different factors. And, one thing we forget is that barbers don’t get training on long length styles in qualifications, not like hairdressing styles, so we need to bridge that skills gap as well, for when fashions change, and they inevitably will.

For more information on courses offered and bring some much-needed skills to hairdressing as well. With the removal of gents training in hairdressing qualifications we are facing a skills gap, and we are ready to bridge it! But cutting hair is cutting hair, right? S

ession is possibly the most glamorous sector in hairdressing, where stylists get to rub shoulders with the movers and shakers of the fashion world. But, it’s a hallowed few that get that close to the fashion Gods. For most, session work is on a much smaller, and more local scale and even getting this far takes stamina, relentless practice and determination. Yet small is beautiful, and such opportunities are more than just a fun alternative to the salon; they can build the profile and respectability of stylist and salon. These opportunities can also be the beginning of a climb into full-time session work. “Session work gets your name the salon name noticed but it’s hard to make those first steps into that world,” said Peter Mellon, Owner of Medusa, Stockbridge in Edinburgh, who was on the Toni & Guy art team for fiveyears, doing cool gigs like Vivienne Westwood and Tom Ford at London Fashion Week. “There is a lot of juggling days off to free up time for sessions, and often the only payment is the push to your profile.” The lack of financial reward is common for those new to the session circuit. In some situations, a manufacturing company will pay the day rate, in others the reward is getting a mention in the credits. Yet still, only the very best stylists get such calls. “To be a really good session stylist you need the absolute basics down brilliantly, and you have to keep going back to these basics as they are the backbone of session work. It’s never about the hair, especially when you are working with the top guys in London. It’s only ever about the clothes,” added Charlie Taylor, who now has two salons in Perth and Dundee, but for years worked at Trevor Sorbie, where she often assisted Eugene Souleiman. “It’s a fantastic job but the most frequent style you have to do is the ponytail. The imagination comes in how you dress out that ponytail.” Both Charlie and Peter loved their time on the London session scene before setting up their own salons. They now get involved in local activity, doing fashion shows, campaigns and photo shoots, but the demands of a salon make it difficult to straddle both session and salon. “I’m more likely to send one of my team these days, although it has to be the top stylists, and that means losing my top earners out of the salon,” added Charlie. “Sometimes I have to make a judgment call of whether it’s worthwhile or not. The skill level demanded for session styling means only those with a real passion for it can really do it, because it requires endless practising, jumping on new techniques and staying ahead of the trends. However, all that effort pays off in the salon.” Peter agreed, he said: “It makes sure you are the best whether you are in the photo studio or behind the chair.” How to hack it as a session stylist: • Build up a profile of work so you can show any prospective session organiser that you are good enough to deliver on the day,

asking!”

• Begin by assisting so you can learn what it takes and build-up the speed necessary to do multiple heads quickly. Sometimes the hair stylist has just a few minutes to prep the hair before the model is in front of the camera or storming down the catwalk.

• Approach wedding shops or bridal shows to see if they are doing shoots or shows where you can help dress out the models’ hair.

• Make contact with other creatives who are already on the circuit. MUAs, stylists and models will often call their friends when they get a job. Charlie recommends building a relationship with the modelling agencies as well. • Email local magazines and papers to see if you can help out with any of their fashion photoshoots or competitions. • Follow your session idols on social media and engage with them so they get to know your name. “Don’t feel shy about asking them if you can assist,” Peter said. “And keep on

• Local colleges or universities that run courses on textiles or fashion will always hold end of year shows. These are often organised by the students, who will be grateful for any professional support and know how to ensure their work is seen in the best light. Contact the colleges to volunteer, but make sure you are willing and able to give up the time required away from the salon. • Universities and student unions are increasingly holding charity fashion shows to raise money, and these can be a great opportunity to promote the salon to students and to a wider audience. Again, they can demand a lot of time for planning and delivery.

We’ve just gone through a subtle refurb at both our salons and off the back of that we are now rebranding. Our aim is to keep the brand energetic, modern and cool. After 30-years in business, this sort of investment is crucial so we avoid the clientele ageing with the salon. The death knell of any salon is to become a place that’s written off by Millennials because their grandmothers use or frequent it. But, refocusing a business that keeps the older demographic happy while tempting in the younger generation is a challenge, as one risks alienating the other. We trod super-carefully with our latest update. We designed the salon for the new, younger consumer we want to attract while keeping the key elements that satisfy a client of any age – a cool, uncluttered interior and a carefully planned menu of hair and beauty services that appeal to all ages. Our beauty, once isolated in the peaceful

Charlie Taylor on Employing Millennials oasis of our upstairs, has been brought down into the salon so clients can drop by at our nail bar or have their make-up done at our express bar. At the same time as the refurb, we looked at training so our team has the right skills to deal with any age. Our therapists have recently undergone special training in anti-ageing facials, while in each salon there are now master colourists who are bringing the latest techniques and vibrant colours back to share with their team.

We also approach client communications conscious of how the different generations engage with media and the tone they expect. This means stretching across many channels to promote the profile, choosing a different voice for each to encourage segmentation. It’s demanding, but there is no point moaning about it; we just have to accept it and find a way to make it work. But, driving a salon business so it is number one in the area isn’t just about focusing on the clientele. There is the team, now made

specialised training developed for them rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We constantly encourage them to be proactive on social media and we post their work to our feeds to showcase what they do. We give them opportunities to go beyond the salon. We urge them to get involved with courses, seminars and specialist teams offered by the manufacturers. We impress on them the importance they as individuals have on the success and health of the whole business, to drive that sense of ownership. In return for the energy, commitment and passion of all our team, not just the younger ones, we’ve created a beautiful environment in which to work, while

our push to stay ahead as a modern salon means they have a widely varied clientele that ensures no day is ever the same.

Words: Charlie Taylor

up of different generations to consider; what are their motivations in this rapidly changing world? Dangerous generalisations about Millennials seem to dominate the media, but my experience is that today’s younger hairdressing crowd are just as hungry as we were at that age. They are independent and a bit impatient, but so were we. I was determined to get to London and I knew exactly which salon I wanted to work in. So I hung around Covent Garden until I could corner Mr Sorbie and persuade him to give me a job. I say we embrace the desire of Millennials to stand out from the crowd and be something. I want to help them be the best they can be and that means

My experience is that today’s younger hairdressing crowd are just as hungry as we were at that age.

FROM MEDUSA & FAME TEAM’S - Peter Mellon Keep your eyes peeled for more of Peter’s wanderlust adventures. With his feet firmly on the ground after his whistle-stop trip to Australia, 2018 F.A.M.E Team member Peter Mellon has had time to reflect and to grab a few days rest and relaxation.

aIt was my birthday recently, so happy birthday to me. It has been the best year ever so far: F.A.M.E Team, Australia, new romance and my own salon. I’m determined to keep the momentum going, and the only way I know to do that is to keep on working my socks off.

September is showdown month for SHABA (Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards) and we are up for three: Medusa as Best Salon, Medusa md Colin McAndrew for Best Male Stylist and my salon, Medusa Stockbridge, for Salon Design. What do you reckon?

I managed to get some time off to slip away to Amsterdam with my partner, Charlie. I love a bit of romance.

I’d hardly got back from Australia when I was off again with Colin to Galway to host a masterclass for 60 hairdressers! Showcasing new techniques to a classic cut combined with a little editorial hair demonstration to get everyone excited. Thanks to BellissimoHair and the Hair and Barber’s Market.

Got to do an amazing makeover on one of my clients. Took a while but so worth it. She loves it.

Did I mention my salon got featured in the Scotsman, Scotland’s biggest national paper? Brilliant publicity for Medusa Stockbridge, which, even before the feature, has been packed out. When you get national coverage, you suddenly get clients coming from all over. One woman came from Paisley, near Glasgow for a consultation. She liked what I suggested so said go ahead – luckily I could move some things around to fit her in. She booked her next appointment as she left.

Even though we work across various Medusa salons, we are still a team and together we’ve been working on something really special, our 2018 collection, UNDERGROUND. Keep your eyes peeled on social media for the final images.

I was kind of used to clients travelling though. These lovely ladies always make a day of it coming to Edinburgh from Aberdeen (four hours away) to get their hair done. I’ve been looking after their hair for more than 10 years, since I was a stylist in Aberdeen.

One of the best souvenirs of our F.A.M.E Team trip down under, courtesy of BaByLiss Pro, was to be photographed on stage with Nick Irwin. It’s one of those images where I can’t believe it doesn’t show how much my hands were shaking. SalonNV Magazine | 71

Alan Beak There are few names in British barbering that are as illustrious or require no introductions quite like Alan Beak, and we’re honoured to have his work grace our cover mount once again. We caught up with Alan and spoke about the RUGER brand, his meteoric rise in the industry and what lies in store for us in 2019. Alan doesn’t strike as a man gagged by the weight of holding such industry prestige, however, allowing his work to speak where words do no justice.

72 | SalonNV Magazine

SalonNV Magazine | 73

Alan is a man of depth, his passion for barbering running deep, as will many reading his words. His status within the industry offers a lot in terms of education. Not only where his successes come from, but how success is actually achieved, and how even in the face of near-celebrity status, locally or otherwise, you can and should remain humble. Never losing track of where you want to be, or who you want to be. At the point of publication of this issue of BarberNV, Alan will have completed the final date on his RUGER. Spotlight tour. The Spotlight tour was designed to allow young barbers and hairdressers to show the dexterity of their technical skill, and collaborate with state of the art photography, allowing younger hair professionals to be pushed towards their full potential. RUGER.’s Spotlight tour has already been to Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Newcastle and Manchester, before one final date in Cardiff at the end of July. And of course, you’ll get a chance to see Alan in action at Festival Barber in Italy on September 9.

NV: How has 2018 been and what are your plans for the rest of the year? AB: As always this year has been a busy one, bigger than last year but not as big as we predict for 2019! On a personal level, my family is growing, at the rate, I’m going I’ll be opening a new barber shop just for the kids. And on a professional level we take each working day and educational event as they come, we love what we do and people see this and like to book us which is great. We have taken bookings for education and show work right up to the end of next year so right now we will be organising those trips, LA, Canada, Brazil, New York just to name a few. NV: How was the RUGER. spotlight tour received? AB: The tour was incredible, making money was never the key element with the tour, the goal was simply to help other barbers pursue a career that was more professional and fulfilling. In all honesty, it was conducting a photo shoot that really propelled my career, so we wanted to provide the opportunity for others and hoped it would do the same for them. NV: How difficult was it to set everything up? AB: You’d be very surprised actually, the team, to make sure each day runs smoothly consists of around eight people, educators, photographers, videographers, van drivers, admin and editing. Then once they have been managed there are the participants to deal with, not just before the event but then ongoing afterwards to make sure everybody is happy with their final images, and to make sure they use them to make certain our main goal is achieved. It’s pretty much a full-time job of its own. NV: How was the spotlight tour stop in Glasgow? AB: Glasgow was one of our favourite dates in the tour, everybody there came with the same mindset, to learn and get the most out of the day, and the images that came from Glasgow showed how diverse the industry is and how broad the range of talent there is. The venues were all photography studios, which was really important for us to throw participants into a new environment and put them out of their comfort zone. NV: What are your favourite styles right now?

74 | SalonNV Magazine

AB: At the moment I’m all about low maintenance, soft and distressed, like a messy crop, longer or shorter, combined with shorter sides. Whether we like it or not the skin fade is going nowhere! It’s clean, short and sharp, people love it for a reason, and it’s been more than a fad this time around. It’s never been as technical and smooth, and it’s here for an indefinite amount of time. For the first few years

of me cutting hair I didn’t use clippers, it was all scissors and comb and it’s so refreshing to go back to those styles, our foundation is very traditional and classical, so I love to combine a simple classical layer with a soft and subtle taper, combining all elements of hairdressing. NV: What are the styles you think will take off in autumn, winter 2018/19?

AB: We use our Instagram as a modern-day look-book, which in turn means people tend to ask for what they see on your page, and mostly I post the work I think is most ‘in’ - well in my eyes anyway. Looks are still complicated to create but more simplistic to look at. As we get toward colder weather I do enjoy it because clients tend to grow out their hair which is nice to put the clippers down and give the scissors so real use. NV: Where did you get your passion for the industry? AB: Ok, so when I was young I loved having my hair cut, everything about the experience was amazing! I was in awe of the guys cutting my hair, the smell of the barber shop and mostly the way it made me feel. I still remember those feelings now, and this made me think, I want to be the person responsible for making other people feel that way. The fact that I’m a perfectionist, and ambitious just made everything else fall into place. I cut hair because I love to, my mind is constantly going crazy and cutting hair is cathartic for me, it’s the only thing that controls the voices. NV: The RUGER brand has seen an incredible rise in becoming a stand-out in the industry. If you were to give yourself advice when you were first starting out, what would you say? AB: Don’t do it, haha no I’m only joking! I’d just warn myself of the hard work that was to come; I think if I would have expected the hardships I would have dealt with them better. There are many wolves and snakes in our industry, and it’s easy to be used and manipulated by them for their own personal

gain. I have fallen victim to a few of them, being naive and having nothing but love for barbering, people couldn’t wait to take advantage of this, and unfortunately, I found out the hard way after I got shafted, and not in a good way! So, I’ve learned to take care of myself. It’s like on a plane, when the safety instructions read ‘in case of loss in cabin pressure, put on your own oxygen mask before anybody else’, I’ve found this is important in life, if you spend time helping others and bending over backwards for them you can suffocate, and I’m not about dying on the job… not yet anyway.

Having all this to tend to, four businesses, each totally different, 12 staff members, one being a needy little brother, and a growing family at home can all get a bit much. There have been times I was about to say I’m done, that’s it, enough is enough, I had a good run, I didn’t do bad, I’ve had one today actually. But, then I calm down, breathe, recalibrate and deliver, a SAS motto. I’m lucky to have an amazing wife, she keeps me in check, she’s my biggest fan, and the best looking one too.

NV: A lot of barber shops are making and branding their own products, just as RUGER have. How important was this in developing the brand?

AB: In this respect, I’m not practising what I preach, although all the books I’m reading at the moment tend to tell me the same advice, and I’m trying to follow their directions on dealing with the stress of it all. Breathe, number one, take time out, prioritise what’s important to you, I’m a list maker me, I have three or four notepads, different sizes. I brainstorm, I make lists, I actually make lists of the lists I need to do! Once I have a job list or a goal list, I try to work on one of them at a time until it’s done. And, as soon as it’s completed I make a new one. I always find this gets things done.

AB: It’s all about building the brand and its another avenue to go down, merchandise in the form of products is a great way to increase revenue and adds a more professional touch. We’ve been trying all sorts of different merchandise, we have things made like candles, organic soaps, key-rings, clothing, but we never sell anything, we always just give them away, and being totally honest I’m a shit businessman. I’m terrible, we would have our clients comment on a candle and I just threw them their way, I’m never fuelled by money, I just like to spread the brand even if it does cost us a fortune. NV: What do you think of your almost celebrity status? AB: I think it’s insane, I can’t go anywhere without being spotted or recognised, my wife finds it strange still, but she won’t moan, she gets free food all the time from it. I enjoy it and welcome it, its the kind of status that we as barbers should receive, we’re awesome, we work our bollocks off, we spend fortunes on education, our job constant evolves, and we have to be the same. We’re always changing tools and investing in them, we might as well be in the medical industry. Bonez the Goat gave a speech once on how we’re like doctors and I stand by him on that. Now we just need paying the same.

NV: What advice do you have for people who want to follow you in that respect?

It’s important to follow your own path. It’s good to take bits from other people, collectively my work comes from about 10 different origins, and I’m proud to say that, you can’t see somebody do an incredible style and not try to recreate it if you like it and want to challenge yourself. That’s how we learn. But, emulating everything that another person or shop does just doesn’t show any individuality, so my advice here is just yourself, do what you like, be driven by the need to progress and be successful in ways other than being rich or having loads of followers. Find success in the form of happiness with your work. I’m yet to feel successful because I feel I’ll always need to work on my skillset, I’ll always consider myself as a student.

NV: What bands/ artists are currently on your playlists? AB: I really love music, it enhances my mood no matter what, and I think it plays a massive role in keeping morale high in the shop, it’s a whole new atmosphere with music, let’s say the ambience. The first thing I do when I get in the shop is put the music on! It depends on my mood what goes on, but I do love a good sing-along so at the moment we’re on an 80s and 90s playlists, well until that little emo Reece comes in and bangs on Panic at the Disco! or something. Nah, we all love Kaytranada, who’s a Canadian DJ, Kings of Leon, Mo-town and Mariah Carey makes an appearance once a week. NV: What films have you seen this year and what can you recommend? AB: You can’t beat a good comedy, anything with Jim Carey or Will Ferrel and I’m sold, I watched Step Brothers in a hotel room in Russia recently next to a snoring Jewish midget (Liam Twist), and that kills me every time. I also recently watched the Defiant Ones, a four-part series about Dr Dre, not because I’m a lover of gangster rap, but because I like him and his whole lease on life. He didn’t give a shit about what anyone else was doing, he had a goal, and a lot like the horses he had something in mind and followed his dream and let’s just say now he’s flossing. Will Smith is another one, I love his positivity and charisma in everything he does! I’ll finish on Will Smith’s favourite quote… “Set your life on fire, seek those who fan your flames.” Do it, and for the love of God, have fun whilst at work, every day is better with a few laughs. Thanks for taking the time to read, if you’ve enjoyed it my name’s Alan Beak, if not then I’m the other smaller, but the better-looking brother. Peace, and to the RUGER. family, I love you all!

NV: Because a lot can be lost now. With social media being as integral to self-branding as your books, do you feel it’s easy to get lost in that? AB: Oh 100% it’s scary how much time you can spend on social media, although it is crazy important for your brand, and yourself. I used to be on it constantly, always looking at what other people were doing, where in the world they were going and what styles they were smashing out. But, again I learned to focus on us and us only! There’s a reason why racehorses wear blinkers when racing if they don’t they get startled and affected by the horses running next to them and fall to the ground. But, with the blinkers on they focus on what’s in front of them and don’t give a toss what’s happening around them, always focusing on the finish line and not what others are doing. NV: Are there any downsides to how much of a household name you have become in the industry? AB: Absolutely! I’m not an ignorant person at all, it personally affects me if I don’t get back to everybody, including messages on all social media outlets and there are lots of them (Reece has just introduced me to a new one called Grindr that’s doing pretty well at the moment). But messages and phone calls add up, I get lost in returning phone calls, I lose track of time because of the volume of people I’m talking to. And it’s not a bad thing to be in this position, but being in high demand there’s always somebody who wants something from you, needs something else, and you’re given a deadline.

e presented a new feature to SalonNV, the sponsored by e-Chair Q&As. Each issue we’ll bring you interviews with some of the best and brightest stars in the industry, all sponsored by e-Chair. e-Chair is an up-and-coming development, designed with the needs of hairdressing and barbering community at its core. This new dedicated platform will allow salon and barbershop owners to advertise the chairs they have for rent, in an environment tailored specifically for them. e-Chair allows owners and self-employed hair professionals to communicate about available space. A similar concept to property dedicated sites such as SpareRoom, however e-Chair will bridge the gap created between businesses and their audiences. The SalonNV team caught up with the founder of e-Chair to find out a little more about how the platform will transform the industry forever. What benefits can e-Chair bring to the industry? e-Chair gives the industry a new platform to look for and find chairs or space within their chosen area. For salon owners, it gives them the opportunity to either rent out space or chairs, or attract new services altogether. For example, a salon could start to offer lash extensions or nails on certain days of the week; because most people don’t necessarily want to rent out salon space on a weekly basis. So, on their

82 | SalonNV Magazine

busy days salons can utilise a full menu of services, bringing in maximum profit to the salon. We also offer a rating system on the website, allowing people to rate where they’ve worked and vice versa. It’s really boosting the industry, allowing people to work where they want to work and when they want to work, allowing the likes of working mothers to get back into the industry. No longer will you have to be tied down to contracts; you can rent a chair for as long as you need. We’re turning the whole chair rental business on its head. What can e-Chair deliver that isn’t currently available on Facebook or Gumtree? The benefits of e-Chair, as opposed to sites like Facebook or Gumtree, is that our platform is designed specifically for the industry, by the industry to be a one-stop shop. Allowing hair professionals to search specifically for a barber chair or if you want to rent a nail bar or chairs in a salon, where on Facebook for example, they don’t have that level of functionality! e-Chair also displays pictures of the salons, their ratings, their social media, all the information you’ll need, all in one place. What is the ethos behind the platform? The ethos behind e-Chair is to allow hair professionals to work where they want, when they want. Imagine yourself as a talented barber or nail technician, and you decide you want to work in New York or Australia for a month; e-Chair will facilitate that. Although we are only in the UK right

now the ethos behind the platform is to allow people to travel the world and do what they love doing. What inspired e-Chair’s conception? I had heard so many salon owners get frustrated, they found it hard to get chairs filled and with the knowledge, we have within the industry it made sense to create a platform where everyone can go to. Because if you want to travel there’s Air BnB, if you need a taxi there’s Uber; there wasn’t a definitive destination for the hair and beauty industry. From there e-Chair was born! We spoke to a lot of influential people within the industry who were in a similar situation and found problems advertising chairs. The feedback we got from them was fantastic, and from the point of view of someone looking for space, they don’t know where to look because no one’s there to tell them what’s available. What’s the reception been like for the platform since the launch? The reception has been phenomenal! People like Adam Sloan, Sam Wall, Alan Findlay and the big salon chains like the Fellowship and MHFed are all getting behind e-Chair. More importantly, when we launched just last week we had such amazing support. Within the week we’ve had 350 likes on Facebook, and this is only the first week, so we think the feedback and support we’ve received has been incredible. And we can’t wait for the hair and beauty industry to adopt e-Chair into a special place in their collective hearts.
