SH A BA Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards IN ASSOCIATION WITH

BARBER NV S A L O N There have been over 100,000 votes cast to decide the finalists for the eighth annual Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards, so it’s safe to say the eyes of the nation are upon SHABA! It is the premier night in the Scottish hair and beauty industry with hundreds of salon owners and tastemakers from around the UK travelling to Glasgow to be a part of the glitz and glamour of the evening. It’s time for all our entrants to stop wearing out the edge of their seats, as we have our list and we’ve checked it twice! So, now it’s time for the moment so many have been tentatively waiting for – the finalists for the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards 2018. The night will bring together over 800 of the industry’s brightest stars under one roof to celebrate the best of the best, mingle and network. There will be a whole host of names, not just from the Scottish beauty sector, but professionals from

across the UK. SHABA is a one-of-a-kind night that continues to flourish more and more every year. Here we’ll go through all the finalists for the 30 categories, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, the results been tallied and we’ll announce them all in this issue of SalonNV. Our team of expert judges will use all the skill and knowledge at their disposal to make an informed call on the finalists. They’ll look at the quality, consistency of work and customer service skills, so just remember that reputations will not precede you and nothing will slip by our panel. This year’s incarnation of the awards promises to be a night to remember, as we lurch closer and closer to a decade of SHABA! Tickets are still available for the most attended event in the Scottish hair and beauty calendar, snatch your tickets quickly and we’ll look forward to seeing all of you there.

We treat the task of judging the best in industry for each category with the highest importance. That’s why we call upon a crack squad of some of the industry’s brightest names to ensure that whoever is handed the winner’s plaque at the end of the big night is truly Scotland’s finest. Here’s a few of the renowned experts who will be giving the gladiatorial thumbs up to the winners on September 16.

L

ast year Simon Shaw attended SHABA as a guest, as he does every year. However, he didn’t know he was being presented with the inaugural Icon Award for someone who has attained true legendary status within the industry. The reasons why are clear, Simon has helped Wahl UK become the gold standard of barbering companies. Their Global Artistic Director, Simon heads a team of educators that ensures Wahl provide the highest quality in barbering education and has even launched his own range of Academy clippers.

ur other barbering judge brings a wealth of experience to the table, and to top it off he’s a local boy! Born in Port Glasgow, Phil travelled the world with his scissors before settling down south where he is now the proprietor of Carlo & Co. in Cambridgeshire. A stickler for standards, Phil can spot a great haircut at 20 paces so this year’s barbers will really need to be at their best to take to the podium. Phil says he is “in the 30th year of apprenticeship” and he is still learning every single day, so no one will understand better the pressures and pitfalls of being a practicing barber in this day and age.

His latest award saw him become only the fourth person to be granted the Patron of Honour by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing alongside the likes of Vidal Sassoon, Trevor Sorbie and Ann Herman. But his influence reaches well beyond hairdressing, with the Queen herself presenting him with an MBE in 2008. As well as hosting the event this year, Errol will be lending his expert eye to the judging panel this year.

LONDON FASHION WEEK

Alex Mullins Fudge Professional ALEX MULLINS served spectators nine, three-look groupings to explore a spectrum of visual stories. With hair taking queues from the visual story telling employed by ALEX MULLINS, hair styles from the slicked back Travolta, a yuppie nod to Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho and wet-look, wavy looks inspired by the rich man stepping off a super yacht. All finished with clean, simple, freshly washed and blow-dried styles.

Liam Hodges Fudge LIAM HODGES' latest collection, is inspired by the trash-glam of a weekend on the strip in the city of sin. Aesthetically reminiscent of stepping off the plane before going out to keep the good vibes strong. Dirty flat hairstyles, outrageous tattoos and marvelous mullets, the Slick Trash collection is as fun and loose as it is slick and thought out.

Fashion East Art School Hair for ART SCHOOL's outstanding expression of self comes from an eclectic pool of influences. The gender fluid show was a celebration of personality, exuding from the skin, all the way up to the hair. Every model wore a different look taken from inspirations such as Courtney Love, anime punk, rich blow out and Karen O.

Stefan Cooke Fudge This season the STEFAN COOKE collection's hair was all about capturing the essence of those awkward teenage years, all while maintaining a luxe finish. The hair needed a weighty look to give off the energy, or lack-there-of, of a not caring attitude. This could be a heavy fringe blocking out the eyes, or mullet-esque weight and length, with every model rocking a different look.

Xander Zhou Fudge Hair inspiration for the out of this world Xander Zhou collection comes straight out of an 80s sci-fi masterpiece. Oscillating between an ultramodern world and futuristic visuals ripped straight from the set of Fifth Element. Models stood completely divided, some wearing natural, romantic styles, whilst other showcased futuristic wigs and accessories.

Oliver Spencer - Wildflowers Electric Hairdressing A story of sustainability and a connection to mother earth, the collection, entitled WILDFLOWERS, has an air of the modern flowerchild. Reimagined and inspired by the free and wild spirits embodied by the original woodstock, a contemporary hippie aesthetic with a hint of rockabilly vibes, permeates through the collection and the hair alike.

The Fellowship

Colour Project The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Colour Project have recently spent the day learning from multi-award winning, Swedish colourist, Christel Lundqvist.

O

n the day, the team enjoyed an insight into all things TIGI, where Christel is Global Creative Technical Director. The Fellowship team learned how to predict upcoming or spot potentially emerging trends and where best to gather their inspiration from. Receiving a particular insight into the interior and textile trends which Christel turns to for her own creative vision. Christel has won HJ’s British air dressing Awards Colour Technician of the year three times and has created incredible looks for Fashion Week catwalk shows. She invited the team to join her at her salon, Stil, in London’s famous Notting Hill. The salon specialises in fashion-led colour, inspired by Christel’s years of experience and own creative vision. The Colour Project members were also treated to demonstrations featuring techniques and tones from the salon Stil’s latest collection, including some precision application and innovative fashion-beauty concepts. Team member, Katie Scarfe, said: “I gained so much new knowledge and a totally new approach to colour, that I know is going to totally change how I work from now on.”

The day kicked-off with a presentation, where Sam showed some of highlights from his nearly two decade long career with the F.A.M.E. team, as well as the concepts and stories behind some of the most notable looks he has created over the course of such illustrious career. A successful salon owner and session stylist, Sam even has heritage with the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, being an alumni of the F.A.M.E. team himself. He is also a former winner of Newcomer of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards. Taking a look through the successes of his career to date, Sam demonstrated looks from his most contemporary collection including techniques for creating innovative shapes using just elastic. A technique created to cut down on the kit and prep time for each individual look. In the afternoon, the team worked with Sam Burnett to create wigs from scratch; another essential session skill they will be taking away and adding to their own glittering repertoires. F.A.M.E. Team Member, Ellie Bond, said: “We had a fantastic day with Sam! The education and knowledge he shared was invaluable. Thank you to the Fellowship for giving us an opportunity to spend the day with such an inspirational guy!”

The event was also characterised by many ground-breaking, international product launches, welcomed by an industry which thrives off innovation and salon-exclusive technology. Offering products and services that cannot be replicated at home is the central drawcard for salons, and thousands of managers and their teams flock to Hair Expo each year to find that point of difference. The event closed off with its peak celebration, the 2018 Hair Expo Awards, now in its 33rd year, where Joey Scandizzo was crowned the 2018 Australian Hairdresser of the Year. The 2018 New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year award went to Danny Pato, who has now held the title for three consecutive years.

It’s hard to go onto any social media platform right now without hearing about the latest instalment of the ITV’s hottest property, Love Island. And we couldn’t help but notice the incredible lash trends on display especially from Dani Dyer. Dani, who is coupled up with Jack Fincham, was caught blow-drying her lash extensions and that is when we noticed her wearing fuller and thicker looking extensions similar to NovaLash’s American Volume Lashes. The American Volume Extensions are made from synthetic fibres that have a dark colour and a soft feel, giving you the look of a much thicker and darker lash line. These extremely lightweight lashes even maintain their curl when wet! If you want to get Dani’s look, we have some suggestions of what you should ask your lash artist. Ask your lash artist for volume lashes in three or more lengths, this will give your lashes a fluffy yet natural look. Zachary Falb, NovaLash’s Global Master Trainer, said: “If

you prefer thickness over length, which is often the case, ask your lash artist to use more of the shorter extensions to create an eyeliner effect. Remember, lash extensions work with your own natural lashes so if you have short, sparse lashes, the lash artist may not be able to give you a super dramatic look.” You will often hear lash artists say that maintaining extensions is incredibly crucial, and they aren’t wrong when they tell you that. NovaLash Artist and Brand Ambassador, Sarah-Anne Barham, told us: “NovaLash extensions are easy to wear and maintain. Just cleanse the lashes each night with NovaLash cleanLASH pads and keep extensions looking fresh and fluffy by brushing them each morning and night with NovaLash’s new retractable LASHwand.”

rather than using a disposable lash brush, Sarah-Anne says: “Upgrade to NovaLash’s new retractable LASHwand to keep extensions looking fresh. Simply push the metal ring upwards to reveal the brush, then comb them each morning and night and you’re ready to go.” Credit: Sarah-Anne Barham

One of the biggest questions you should ask is if, like Dani’s, the lash extensions should be blow-dried. And the answer is that you do not, but if you do choose to, be safe and make sure that you use the cool setting only. And,

MICROBEAD BAN Wo r l d - l e a d i n g b a n c o m e s i n t o f o r c e i n E n g l a n d a n d S c o t l a n d Environmentalism has come more and more to the forefront of the public conscious in 2018, with the consideration of a blanket ban on plastic straws in pubs and restaurants, due to the damage they cause to marine life. Evidenced by the harrowing viral video, featuring a sea turtle having a straw extracted from it’s nose. A ban on the sale of microbead cosmetic products, issued by the UK Government, came into force on June 19 in England and Scotland and is due to be introduced in Wales as of June 30. The beads commonly used in bathroom products such as, face washes, body scrubs and toothpastes. The beads are then flushed down drains immediately after use, and consequently cause damage to our seas and marine life, something that has become unacceptable in contemporary cosmetics. The Environmental Audit Committee for the House of Commons stated that up to 100,000 microbeads can make there way to marine environments every single shower. The small plastic beads are designed to

help exfoliate the skin, but one of the major problems is that the beads themselves do not degrade naturally and the plastic can contain chemicals that are harmful to widlife. Often times the balls slip through the filters at water treatment plants, where they eventually make their way to UK’s water bodies polluting them. The UK’s leading marine charity, the Marine Conservation Society, said that although the ban on the manufacture and sale of products containing microbeads is great progress, there’s still more work to be done. The MCS have said the ban must be now extended to all products that contain the incredibly harmful pieces of plastic. “We are delighted that this robust microbead ban has come into force,” Senior Pollution Policy Officer at the Marine Conservation Society, Dr Sue Kelly, said, “This is the strongest and most comprehensive ban to be enacted in the world and will help to stem the flow of micro-plastics into our oceans.” The “woke” attitude among the current

generation of consumers has led to an increase in the number of vegan brands in the prestige beauty market. However, the NPD Group does note, brands coming under the vegan banner are often have very limited distribution, with vegan beauty brands as a whole only accounting for around 1% of women’s skincare products. Following a survey by the Vegan Society UK, it was revealed that the number of people cutting meat and animal products from their diets and beauty regimes has increased 360% in the past decade. With consumers voting hard with their wallets, it makes sense for more companies to drop animal-testing and the use of animal ingredients in their products. In fact, since February 2017 the sale of vegan beauty and cosmetic products has increased by 38% according the information surveyors, the NPD group. Driven in part by campaigns such as Veganuary and the increased prevalence of the vegan lifestyle, beauty products have risen to meet the demand of cruelty-conscious consumers, and it’s about time that the law caught up!

onat has just launched their healthy hair revolution in the UK! The US based company, valued at $25m has been in the UK for eight weeks and has already finalised in the National Hair and Barber Awards for Best Hair Styling and Best New Hair Innovation, recognising that while MONAT is the new blood in the UK market they’re showing no less influence here than stateside. The world-class hair care products are set to become a very valuable revenue stream for many salons, as well as both employed and selfemployed stylists across the UK. MONAT provides a comprehensive business structure and incentive scheme, superseding any other brand currently in the market. Salons and stylists are not required to buy bulk stock either, instead products can be easily ordered and replaced via their online retail system without any significant initial investment. Bringing with it a new use of technologies that will take salons, and indeed households into the future. Clients, salons, and stylists will have their own web-pages to order, check details and have access to all the information on ingredients and product use ensuring ease of education on all of MONAT’s benefits. For selling their MONAT products, stylists can receive between 15% and 30% commission on every unit sold, three times the typical commission received from contracted products. And, this is without delving into any sort of target driven system often seen many brands market strategies. MONAT can offer an incentivised business structure within salons, if it does not already operate as such. However, even then these couldn’t match the commission and target structures offered by MONAT. Alongside this, the company offers exclusive in-salon education and incentive concepts that you can pass on to stylists and clients alike. Clients can also be signed up to the MONAT VIP scheme which will see them saving 15% off retail cost for life. This again is a great

customer retention tool, able to be put into practice within salons, or even easily deployed by mobile stylists. MONAT provides you with a true opportunity for salons to offer real client-led VIP experiences. MONAT has been certified by Leaping Bunny as a 100% veganfriendly product, meaning nothing released by the product contains ingredients that are animal derivatives, nor are they tested on animals. Along with the attractive cruelty-free stamp, MONAT’s products are designed to improve the health of your hair and scalp, as well as containing anti-ageing ingredients to benefits the client’s hair. Providing instant results MONAT can also be added to your salon’s menu as a specialist treatment to give first-hand demonstrations of the brand’s sterling quality. MONAT unquestionably demonstrate the pedigree of their healthy hair revolution, as in the US (where the company originates) the Government bans or regulates only 30 chemicals used in cosmetics! However, the UK Government bans or regulates over 1,400 of these chemicals, and since launching in February this year MONAT has not changed or altered the formula of their products. Products such as the Intense Repair Treatment System have had excellent testimonials from those suffering from hair loss and thinning, such as the symptoms experience by people undergoing chemotherapy or other harsh treatments. The Blow Out Cream reduces the time taken for blow-drys, recognising that time equals money, this is excellent for salons to include in their arsenal of products, even if they don’t make MONAT a retail priority. In addition, the products contain no sulphates, parabens, silicones or harmful colourings and fragrances. MONAT as a brand are everything that they purport to be and are simply waiting for you to take advantage of the incredible opportunities on offer. NAIL TRENDS It’s always a question around the summer festival season, as to what will be the hottest nail trends on display to match your floral crown and bejazzled features. But, what are this year’s praised looks for when you’re slugging it out in a field in Reading or Leeds or glamping in style? To find out what’s trending this season we asked Georgie Smedley, the Owner and Managing Director of Nail Harmony. Georgie has recently been nominated for the Scratch Awards for her services to the industry, as well as Beauty Professional of the Year for Safety in the Beauty Awards 2018.

Celebrities, as ever the movers and shakers, this season are gravitating towards all things spring; natural nails, floral patterns, fully embracing bright colours. Georgie , said: “I love the use of the real, pressed on nails, as seen recently on the likes of Lily Allen by nail tech Michelle Humphrey.” Georgie’s hot take for this season, she says: “Brands such as ourselves with Gelish and All That Jazz always bring seasonal collections out ahead of the weather change so that salons have time to order in the latest seasonal colours.” Georgie believes the go to looks for this season even though “it might be everyone’s go to colour” is an orange shade! “Our new summer collection from Gelish Make A Splash professional collection has the most amazing orange called You’ve got Tan-gerine Lines and it is so different to any other orange we have released before and well worth a try! For those wanting a regular nail lacquer we have two gorgeous vibrant oranges Don’t Be a Jerky and one with a sparkle Jamaican Me Crazy which are both from The Caribbean Collection. “Lately we have been selling a lot of nude shades. Although these are popular all year round for some, nude shades are often a great choice for clients who aren’t quite ready to brave the neons and brights. “They can be made a little special by adding nail art, glitter or pigments. I imagine that once the summer sun finally hits the UK and the holidays are in full swing those bright colours will be much more popular!” Social media isn’t just a tool for promoting your businesses and showcasing your style, if you’re looking to stay ahead of the trendies there’s plenty of inspiration out there for nail technicians and clients alike. Michelle Humphrey, @nailsbymh on Instagram always creates incredibly beautiful designs that are both fashionable and wearable, so make sure to keep and eye on her profile.

Austen Thomson An influcer’s guide to social media

In the last edition of SalonNV we covered how Schwarzkopf were using social media influencers to reach the millennial generation. This month we asked Schwarzkopf influencer, Austen Thomson, how social media has changed the industry and most importantly what you can do to better preserve your brand and maximise your reach. It can’t be understated how important platforms such as Instagram are for your business in the post-internet era. Nowadays, brands and industry professionals are reliant on social media for business growth more than any other form of advertising. Describing the difference a strong social media can make, Austen said: “We have grown our brand locally over the years and we always remember that the magic really happens when you have someone in your chair looking and feeling amazing however, growing the brands image to a wider audience certainly has put the salon on the global map.” Austen talks us through the current trends, and

how your profiles can maintain their clout. He said: “The current trend in social media is video. We are 90% more likely to remember a message we see in a video compared to when read in text. Videos are also shared 1,200% more than text and images.” Common faux-pas can be easily avoided, when first building up your social media empire, it’s important to understand your brand, your market and their interests, as Austen told us: “The biggest mistake people make when using social media is to expect others to be interested in their daily actions and over doing it, quality of content is better than quantity. “The people I see doing it well tend to give more than they take. Believing that social media is more important than the work you do is always a mistake.” Social media is, whether you like it or not however, vital and there is no better way to hook potential clients on your story. It’s crucial you keep a strong focus on your brand’s identity and values. “I check social media

before I go to a website nowadays. So it is important that you keep your message clear and specific to your work.” Finally, giving us his best advice for young industry professionals looking to bolster their social media presence, Austen said: “If you are starting out in the industry and looking to create a digital presence, then be sure to create an account for your personal life and one for you professional work, this is going to be your portfolio. “Keep your cat, drunken nights out and healthy breakfast pics on the personal one and images of beautiful hair, products and salon life on the professional one. Find a style that you want to be known for and keep consistency in your work. If you are thinking of creating video content then learn some editing software and buy a ring light to create shine on the hair.” But, most importantly Austen places emphasis on having fun with your social media. austenthomsonhair.co.uk

ohnston’s of Elgin hosted their very first presentation at London Fashion Week to an international audience. The brand, with more than two centuries of experience in cashmere, made their debut in central London, presenting fifteen womenswear and five menswear looks. Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa in Lossiemouth and Matrix Educator, Karen Thomson, along with stylists from her team, were on-hand to style, using hair products from Matrix who sponsored the presentation. Karen led her stylists, Tori and Paula, to create effortless, natural looking hairstyles that would compliment the Johnston’s autumn/winter 18 collection, which featured three overarching themes: Sculptural Simplicity offers pure linear silhouettes in matte, double-face cashmere in black, natural vicuna and camel. Minimalist pieces are executed in perfectly elegant proportions and features precision hand-tailoring. Athlux Edge explores super soft cashmere statement pieces and exaggerated textures, in neutral tones with flashes of bold colour electric, emerald, red and saffron. New Tradition, a modern take on the brand’s heritage showcasing soft sartorial tailoring for women with a contemporary edge, that mixed technical innovation with traditional craft colours including navy, red and olive with a flash of arran white. The hair vision Karen and her stylists for the day was becoming one with the garments, and the end results were gorgeous. Hairstyles included sleek and clean looks with hard centre partings and lots of mirrored shine. The day was very fast paced for the stylists and the presentation lasted two hours. KAM Hair and Body Spa Owner, Karen Thomson, said: “This was my first Fashion Week and it was an absolute honor to work with Johnston’s of Elgin under the stewardship of Alan Scott, the creative director – such a privilege to be asked to lead on hair for their debut at London Fashion Week.”

chwarzkopf Professional salon Hensmans of Northampton have once again collaborated with the fashion and textile students at Northampton University. The 17 year longstanding tradition saw the salon working with second-year students, giving them a brief to create a collection based on Schwarzkopf Professional’s Spring/Summer 18 looks: Reinventing Hair. The students worked in groups, picking one the sub-collections from Reinventing Hair, Beyond Borders, Random Rebel, Real Me and Royal TakeOver to base their looks on. Each team was given the opportunity to shoot the principle piece from their collections with a professional photographer, make-up artist, and hair stylist from Hensmans to complete their model inspired by Schwarzkopf’s Essential Looks. Gemma Hensman, director of Hensmans salon said: “It’s great to get the opportunity to work with the fashion students in this way. The course is amazing and working alongside lecturer Jane Mills is an absolute joy.” The finished results were stunning, and it is fascinating to hear the students came upon their inspirations and visions, and how they edited and shaped their finished and incredibly polished garments. The project ended with a panel of expert judges picking one of the teams to win an esteemed prize from Hensmans. Judging the competition were Hensmans’ director Gemma Hensman, Hensmans group creative director James Campbell, PR senior account executive Emilie Scott from LWPR and marketing manager and technical advisor for Schwarzkopf Professional Marina Fallahi and Jamie Farrar. Gemma added: “The students have worked

really hard and we are incredibly impressed with the work they have created.” Team three were selected as the ultimate victors, inspired by the Real Me collection. On the winning look, Gemma said: “We felt this team really took the brief and the theme of Real Me ad made it their own by asking about real issues that surround us in society, such as body image and trolling thanks to social media. Yet still keeping the look, cut and feel of the clothing very true to the brief.” The students managed to create looks that

embodied the aesthetics put forward by Real Me. The clean lines, fine fabrics and beautiful flow surrounds the sub-collection’s theme of making the most of the naked self. The students took the core values, outlined in the brief, putting their own creative visions into the final garments. The students in team three won a professional photo shoot, with a professional make-up and stylist courtesy of Hensmans and Schwarzkopf Professional. www.schwarzkopf.co.uk

NEW SHOPS

Baroque Hair After the successful launch of an incredible hair and beauty salon in Harrogate, in 2007, it was only a matter of time before Baroque Co-Founders, Tom O’Brien and Terry Sowerby, found a stunning location suitable for their second salon. Baroque Hair Ripon is a 2,000 square foot salon, boasting an opulent interior with a real sense of intimacy. A sumptuous combination of modern shades and lavish furnishings create a sense of grandeur, while the attention to detail, such as polished oak flooring, gives the salon’s design a thoroughly modern finish. The moment clients step inside the latest Baroque hair salon, they are transported into a haven of elegance. A refreshments area, complete with plush leather Chesterfield sofas, is the perfect spot for pre-appointment relaxation, with freshly ground coffee or a glass of wine. These customer-centric accoutrements have become a particular hit with their Ripon clients. While the reception area evokes a sense of togetherness, the overall vibe of the main salon is far more intimate and private. Each styling station features its own ornate table and baroquestyle mirror, designed to make each client feel like royalty. Being affiliated with Kevin Murphy also meant they renovated the building with great environmental consideration. All external walls and roof sections have been insulated, while water is heated by a highly efficient gas-condensing boiler with a pressurised water storage tank, to make the salon as energyefficient as possible. It is no mean feat, following in the footsteps of a highly successful, town-centre salon, yet Baroque Hair Ripon has already earned itself a glittering reputation.

Blue Tit Multi-award winning, focused hairdressing group, Blue Tit is set to add a ninth salon to their portfolio. Nestled in Topshop’s Oxford Street, flagship store, the salon boasts an avant-garde interior like no other. The salon space has been imaginatively designed to emulate an architectural structure, abandoned and overrun by the creeping influence of Mother Nature. The visuals were inspired by a desire to create an air of stillness in an otherwise artificial environment. Perry Patraszewski and Andi Hinteregger, Blue Tit CoFounders, said: “Creating the new Topshop salon has been a whole new adventure and we’re looking forward to getting to know another dynamic part of London.” The urban jungle aesthetic, has given the salon a raw, industrial foundation, characterised by grey concrete wall panels and brick-effect walls. All intensified by an angular ceiling, which has created the awe-inspiring impression of a cityscape. SittinWg in stark contrast to the industrial elements is the lush foliage, in a gorgeous spectrum of green hues, have been creatively woven throughout the space. Ivy cascades in the main salon area, while greenery sprawls in the corners, appearing to come from the world beyond the salon. The unique finishings and furnishings are equally imaginative, having been sourced from across the globe or created specifically to match the salon’s aesthetics. A projector hanging above the washbasins, displaying nature-themed videos complete their vision, which cleints can view while having their hair rinsed. Since the salon brand’s inception in 2011 Blue Tit has continued to expand its collection of eclectically designed salon spaces in up-and-coming London locations. As a young, fashionable and ambitious brand, with global aspirations, its latest partnership with Topshop is a seamless match.

oss himself comes from hairdressing prestige, his parents’ salon founded the first five-star hairdressers in the north of England and when the company sold, Ross decided it was time to tread his own path. First port of call, as Ross reminisces, was the experience, he tells us: “I didn’t want to be mediocre, I didn’t want the salon to be cheap or budgeted. I was striving for a truly exclusive experience. Coming from a top quality company myself, I wanted to implement the same level of quality because that’s where I came from and what I was brought up in. “It wasn’t just about the customer service aspects, I started by fitting out the salon with really luxurious furniture. I imported a lot of the old chairs and the mirrors from Catania, Sicily, I wanted to a classic but modern feel to it, an aesthetic that was timeless and oozed quality.” But don’t be fooled, it’s not just the beautiful aesthetics Ross garnered from across the continent. Upon opening up his doors a decade ago, Ross knew he couldn’t rest at simply having a nice looking experience alone. The salon had to deliver the quality of service Ross knew all too well, from the incredibly talented staff to the collections produced with keen artistic vision. He said: “I had put together a strong team of stylists and realised that I didn’t want to just stick with the stylists in the vicinity, I was pulling stylists from all over. So, I’ve been hiring stylists from Spain and Italy and all over Europe to give the salon an international feel, with an unprecedented skill set. “I realised I didn’t just want to be available to the people in the vicinity, but I wanted to expose what we do to a wider audience. So, we started to enter into awards and produce collections, so we could be in magazines and become an award-winning salon. We were quite lucky really, we started entering and finalised for most of the awards or outright winning them.” The international dream team, under the artistic direction of Ross dedicated themselves to creating the exclusive, fivestar experience, that has afforded the salon places in the regional and grand finals of the L’Oreal Colour Trophy competition, as well as the British Hairdressing awards for their outstanding collections. Ross tells us: “I would probably say at we contribute a lot toward the industry in terms of producing three major collections per year, a men’s collection, a women’s collection and an art team collection, which we enter into the British Hairdressing

awards. We’ve just produced the collections for this year’s art team, north east hairdresser of the year and men’s hairdresser of the year!” There’s a lot a young professional can take away from Ross, a man dedicated to teaching the aspirational youth through his position as educator with Donald Scott NYC. Delivering sage words of wisdom to stylists, hairdressers and employers alike, the industry veteran said: “Make sure you’re with a good company that will give you opportunities, because there’s so many within the industry. But, there’s a lot hair salons that won’t expose their staff enough to what’s available and I think it’s important for young start-up stylists to do their research and look at what’s out there for them. “Get involved in completions, get involved with the Fellowship for British Hairdressing orthe NHF competitions. Really, anything that will give them more than just the NVQ level two or three, I think it’s quite easy to enter a lot of the competitions and become an awardwinning stylist at even a basic level. “I think the biggest mistake for a lot of the young stylists is believing they have their whole careers to build up to this, but there’s the F.A.M.E. team, there’s all different parts of the industry they can get involved with.” Ross emphasises the importance of young stylists practicing ad honing their craft as much as they can, ensuring their skills are polished, noting that awards and the incredible opportunities afforded by the industry won’t just fall at your feet. As he tells us: “You have to put yourself in the position to be able to do it!”

Bridal Beauty Trends It’s fair to say that in 2018, weddings are big news, mostly thanks to the recent Royal Wedding, when the nation fell in love with a new kind of bridal beauty as soon as they set eyes on the Duchess of Sussex. Searches for ‘freckle-friendly’ cosmetics saw a huge spike, and beauty experts are predicting a surge in ‘no-makeup makeup’ for brides in 2018 and beyond. But that’s not the only bridal beauty trend that we at the Medical & Cosmetic Centre are seeing a rise in. Over the last few months, we’ve seen an increase in mother-daughter duos coming into the clinic ahead of a wedding, to discuss aesthetic procedures that will have them looking and feeling their best ahead of the big day.

Weddings have become big business, and the Instagram generation are savvier than most when it comes to appearances. So, for many brides-to-be, the photographs are among the most important aspects of the day, but how they look in them is even higher on the list of priorities. There’ll be more photographs of a bride-to-be in the run-up to, and day of, her wedding than there ever will be again in her life, and the pressure to look her most beautiful can become all-encompassing for many. But as we’ve discovered, it’s not just brides who are feeling the strain; mothers of the bride/groom are increasingly seeking ways to look their most fabulous when it comes to the big day, and are looking into non-invasive, discreet treatments that will restore vibrancy and vitality ahead of those special moments. In the last year, we have seen a leap in mothers and daughters booking into the clinic, often around twelve months before the wedding. At this point, it usually hits home that there’s a limited time left and they’ve had a realisation that there’s something that they want to fix or change ahead of the big day. If you’re in a similar position, twelve months or more is an ideal time frame – it allows us to work together to produce a plan of action, schedule in multiple appointments as necessary and allows for enough time to create those results you were hoping for, without running too close to the wedding day itself. When it comes to the brides, skin issues and lip fillers are the most popular reason for booking in. Brides with acne, rosacea, or even melasma/pigmentation often book in as soon as they become engaged, now that they have this additional pressure to look perfect. Most brides don’t want to have to wear heavy makeup to disguise any skin issues, and this is especially prevalent since the Royal Wedding, when the Duchess of Sussex opted for a barelythere makeup look, letting her natural healthy skin shine through. It’s no surprise that anxious brides-to-be are actively looking to better their skin and dramatically enhance its natural condition to achieve a similar look. We work with our brides to assess their skin and diagnose any skin health issues. Then, we create a bespoke skincare plan according to their needs and prescribe medical-grade skincare to alleviate the problems. Acne and rosacea are amongst the most common concerns that brides visit us about, when they really feel the need to see dramatic results. Lip fillers are also very popular with brides-to-be. Overall, lip fillers are our most popular procedure amongst our entire clientele, but many of our lip patients are engaged women. We are renowned for our ethos of making lips ‘better, not bigger’, so we see many women come to us looking to create a plump but perfectly proportioned look. The trend for bigger lips is not going anywhere, and women with naturally thinner or smaller lips often feel self-conscious about it, so they come to us to create a smile that they’ll feel proud to show off on their wedding day. We use hyaluronic acid fillers, in a very carefully-considered and minimalistic way, to gradually create a plumper but perfectly sculpted pout, ensuring there’s total balance to the lips. When it comes to the mums, the requests are thick and fast. We often find that mums feel spurred into action when a wedding is on the horizon; usually they have felt unhappy with the way they are ageing or the way that they look for quite some time, but with the added pressure that comes with the photographs, mums feel inspired to take action. We’ve also heard from many mothers that the thought of seeing friends or relatives for the first time in years gives them incentive to want to look and feel their very best for such a special occasion. Discreet muscle-relaxing injections and dermal fillers are very popular amongst women in their fifties and sixties, especially in the lead-up to a special occasion such as a wedding, a big birthday or a work event. They come to us when they feel suddenly panicked about their age – which is where we like to reassure patients that we don’t believe in ‘anti-ageing’, just ageing well.

taking years off of the face in an instant, and the results actually improve with time, meaning that it can be done months before the big day for best results.

We use muscle-relaxing injections sparingly and carefully, assessing the face to decide exactly where lines can be halted, and then using minimal amounts of filler to add shape, volume and lift in places where it has been lost. For such a small procedure, the results are often astounding, and really help patients regain confidence in the way they look and feel. And for more dramatic transformations, we are one of the few clinics in Scotland offering the Silhouette Soft Thread Face Lift. Often referred to as the ‘puppet facelift’, this revolutionary procedure uses dissolvable threads to lift and tighten the skin, in a natural-looking way. This procedure creates amazing results,

Alongside the obvious benefits of moral support, encouragement and comfort that comes from visiting the clinic with a close relative, there’s another upside that helps us to create the most natural results. When we see mothers and daughters together, it gives us an insight into genetic clues that we can tap into and use in our procedures. By looking at the mother, we can predict how the daughter will age and prep her for or prevent any issues caused by genetics. And by looking at the daughter, we get a precise look at those features that Mum might have lost over the years, which helps us to restore them in a beautifully believable way. We always find it incredibly rewarding, helping any patient regain confidence and feel that they love the way they look, but when it’s brides-to-be and their mothers, there’s something extra-special about it. Knowing that we have played our part in helping them to look and feel their most beautiful for something so momentous is a wonderful experience, and one that we always enjoy. BRIDAL Step-By-Step

The 2018 wedding season is officially upon us and to mark the beginnings Great Lengths have launched another incredible bridal collection. With a profusion of expertly crafted wedding hairstyles, in this article we offer a step-by-step guide guaranteed to make any brides hair regal on their big day with the textured braid.

Step One: Working from the front hairline, take horizontal sections and tease the hair from the root using the Great Lengths black plastic brush.

Step Two: Smooth the hair back, so the hair falls into its natural parting. Smooth out the surface and create a ponytail forming a clear band just below the crown. Then spray with Great Lengths Soft Finish for hold.

Step Three: Create a second ponytail, allowing loose hair to fall and secure with a clear band below the first ponytail.

Step Four: Divide the first ponytail in half, lifting the second through the centre of the hair. Secure the remaining loose hair a third ponytail with a clear band. Continue this process until you reach the end of the hair.

Step Five: Secure the sends with a clear band and wrap the readings hair around the band to conceal, securing it in place with a pin.

Step Six: Gently tease sections of the braid out and spray with Great Lengths Soft Finish.

JASON COLLIER EMBRACE THE WAVES AND CURLS By Jason Collier

H

air is a huge part of our identities, and whatever its appearance, it brings with it a whole heap of assumptions about who you are and what you’re like as a person. The Hollywood ideals of sleek, straight hair have enforced the look on women worldwide, deeming it the pinnacle of beauty looks. The downside of this is that women with curly or textured hair feel that their hair just doesn’t have the same glamour or appeal, and millions of women globally are feeling the pressure to disguise their hair’s natural texture – in fact, 68% of women worldwide are unhappy with their natural hair, and only 10% of curly-haired women actually like their curls.

heat styling – to encourage those curls, it’s all about your choice of products. Wavy hair is more prone to frizzing, but with the right care and products, you can easily manage this. I would recommend using anti-humidity products on your Type 2 hair, to encourage those waves and fight frizz, for a beautifully beachy look. Just avoid touching the hair too much as this boosts your chances of frizz developing. Wash the hair with a lightweight shampoo and conditioner to give your waves some extra

Statistics like these are upsetting – isn’t it sad to think that so many women are unhappy with the way that they look? So, I’m on a mission to help every woman love the hair they were born with and embrace their natural texture and curls. From soft waves to bouncy ringlets and kinky twists, I want women everywhere to believe in their natural beauty and enjoy it. It’s all about understanding your hair and getting to grips with what you have. If all you see is tutorials and videos styling super-straight hair, it can make your own curls or waves seem impossible to manage, but it’s simply not true. Instead of comparing your hair to someone else’s, take the time to assess your hair and work out what it really needs, so that you can encourage its natural texture to take centre-stage. Step away from the heat-styling and really think about how your hair can look and feel its best. I feel that this is a movement that’s gaining momentum across the world, especially amongst millennial women who feel more comfortable embracing their natural selves. And celebrities are getting in on the act too, with women like Gabrielle Union, Solange Knowles, and even Ariana Grande showcasing their natural curls, kinks and waves on Instagram – and inspiring millions of fans at the same time. So how do you go about falling back in love with your natural hair? First up, assess exactly what kind of hair you have – is it a Type 2, 3, or 4? Type 2 hair is wavy hair that has a little bend to it, with a definitive ‘S’ pattern. Think Taylor Swift or the Duchess of Cambridge. It’s a beautiful hair type, that’s more versatile than you think, and absolutely doesn’t require any

64 | SalonNV Magazine

vitality, and when hair is damp, apply a small amount of styling cream, to encourage those waves and fight off the frizz. Leave hair to air dry for naturally beautiful beachy waves. Type 3 hair is that next step on – it can range from loose loops to springy corkscrew curls, and anything in between. Unlike Type 2 hair, you don’t need to do anything to encourage these curls; for Type 3 hair, it’s just about finding the right way to condition those curls so that they’re manageable. Alicia Keys has gorgeous Type 3 hair, for reference. Type 3 hair is higher maintenance than Type 1 or 2 ladies, but the effort put in pays back – proper care of this kind of hair will result in beautiful, buoyant curls without any need for heat styling! Curly hair is the most temperamental hair type, so you need to have a little trial-anderror to work out a haircare regime that suits you. Try lightweight styling milks to reduce frizz and add definition, and to add more moisture into your care regime, opt for nourishing leave-in conditions that smooth the hair and impart a lovely, healthy shine. Again, leave those curls to dry naturally to get beautiful

results. Type 4 hair is gorgeous – think Lupita Nyong’o, Janelle Monae, or Solange Knowles. Type 4 hair is naturally very dry in texture – it looks strong and coarse, but actually this type of hair is very delicate and needs your love and attention to look its best. Its fine and dry texture means it snaps and breaks off easily, so be gentle at all times. This kind of hair is also prone to shrinkage, and its delicate nature means that you should treat it in the same way you would a silk dress – cleanse it gently, handle it with care, and avoid harsh chemicals. The key to properly caring for Type 4 hair is to moisturise at every step of the way. Start with a nourishing shampoo and follow with a rich, hydrating conditioner to cleanse and moisturise locks at the same time. 4As should look into curling creams with a leave-in conditioner element, to add more moisture and prevent breakage in the hair, whilst 4Bs should double up on hydration with a refreshing, moisturising mist and an extranourishing styling cream to keep those coils and kinks looking fresh and fabulous. Ladies rocking the 4C hair type will need to take that extra level of care, but the results are well worth it. Shrinkage and dryness affect 4C hair more than any other type, but that’s no reason for it to not be beautiful. Use a liberal amount of leave-in hair moisturiser to gently elongate the kinks and stretch the hair out for both definition and length in your kinks and coils. With my tips, I hope that all of you ladies out there feel confident enough to rock your natural curls, coils and waves this summer. If you decide to try it out for yourself, please tag me in your Instagram snaps @jasoncollierjc so I can see how you get on!

FROM MEDUSA & FAME TEAM’S - Peter Mellon

Hairdresser of Oz While things have been bedding down nicely in his brand new salon, Peter Mellon has been jetting off to Australia with the Fame Team. He stopped for a couple of minutes to bring us up to date on all his travels.

First up - Medusa totally smashed it at Wella TrendVision this year. It was nailbiting, but we did it – two through to the final in London. Well done to Fraser from Medusa Teviot, but especially well done to Kat from Medusa Stockbridge (MY salon!) To stop us obsessing about our upcoming trip down under, the Fellowship organised a seminar for us with Sam Burnett. He gave us a really honest insight into his background and how he got to where he is. He also showed us some of the techniques he’s used in his latest, amazing collection. One of the highlights was making wigs, something I’ve always wanted to learn. It was brilliant being able to pick Sam’s brain on how to make the perfect wig.

I also managed to squeeze in the first ever seminar in my salon for Medusa Training. It was a masterclass on up-hair presented by Kylie from our Teviot salon and myself, showcasing all our techniques and getting the students to recreate what they’d learned.

There was some amazing work done.

And finally we were off! Possibly the highlight of the whole FAME team year, our trip to Australia, courtesy of our sponsor, BaByliss Pro. It was a really long flight, but finally we were in Melbourne.

????????? The actual Fame Team shoot was a real eyeopener. We had beautiful models and a nice tidy budget. It is amazing working with professionals of this standing including photographer Barry Jeffery, make-up artist Ingrid Petegrina McNabb and stylist Desiree Lederer. Errol was amazing with his creative direction.

J e t L ag We scoff at jet lag. Just as well, the Fellowship had a packed few days planned for us. As soon as we were off that plane we were in the studio planning and prepping for our photoshoot.

W i ggi ng O u t One of the highlights was a detour to search out wigs. We found this amazing shop in Melbourne which was just floor to ceiling wigs, I loved it!

Swappi ng N o t es We did have time between all our rushing around to meet and sit down with the Australian FAME Team to swap notes. Two members of the Aussie team are actually from the UK. We all came to the same conclusion, that being part of the FAME Team is a total privilege. It is such an amazing, enriching experience.

Deviant C ol l ect i on Did I mention it was a packed few days? As well as the workshop and the photo shoot, we also did two shows. We reproduced the images from our Deviant collection at the Australian Hair Expo. It’s an interesting experience producing hair for a photoshoot then producing the same looks for a show.

Se r i o u s Me nt o r s We did make time for a group shot with our mentors, Nick Irwin and Andreas Stavrou. We all look so serious, but it was actually a total blast the whole time.

Pho t o sho o t s The whole experience doing the photoshoot was incredible. We developed our ideas around the New York art and club scene in the 1980s and the fabulous Basquiat exhibition we saw in London earlier this year. It’s called Deviants.

Ge n N ow The other show was for Gen Now, which we closed with a show reproducing elements of a hush-hush shoot we did but, which I’m not allowed to talk about yet. The show was called Misfits. SalonNV Magazine | 67

Collagen & Aging The truth is collagen is teeming in our bodies, it’s the protein that gives our bones strength, our skin its elasticity, all while replacing the dead skin cells. Collagen makes up around 30% of our body’s protein structures, as we get older our bodies struggle to replace the collagen, leaving us to seek alternative sources. The restorative properties of collagen are well proven, treating minor imperfections such as, smoothing out fine lines, crows feet and acne scars. Collagen treatments can also be used to create fuller lips and cheeks. However, collagen products aren’t some new miracle pill on the market, in fact they’ve been available in high street stores for some time now. And collagen injections have been a popular anti-ageing procedure for decades. But now, collagen products and procedures are marketed as everything from powders and pills, to serums and even in gin! Collagen treatments are becoming more and more varied, as explained by Gina Clark, the Marketing Director for The Women’s Clinic, a centre which operates with fully qualified medical professionals and gynaecologically trained staff to implement the Nu-V treatment. A CO2 laser used for vaginal rejuvenation, the treatment works by creating small wounds that promotes the bodies natural healing and collagen production processes. On the treatments, Gina said: “Towards our late 20s the body stops producing as much collagen which means our cells can get damaged easily. This treatment encourages collagen production over a twelve week healing period and the results are amazing.” So popular are these services, the Women’s Clinic is expanding their range, incorporating vampire facials. This treatment involves taking a small sample of blood, extracted from the face, it’s then put through a centrifuge to release everything that will make your skin heal. Then mixed in a serum that suits the client’s specific skin type, reapplying it to the face with a Derm-FX pen which can make up to 1,000 tiny holes per second. The skin absorbs the mixture and leaves you with rejuvenated skin full of natural collagen.

Would I write a book? Or should I take to the stage? Words by: Emil McMahon I am a lover of music, lots of different styles of music, and I sometimes post lyrics on my Instagram account @emilthecaretaker. Song lyrics can have a real impact when listened to carefully and quite often I find myself inspired by them. Such is the case with the header of this article, a line taken from Left to My Own Devices by the Pet Shop Boys. The song was released in 1988 and the following two lines have always struck a chord (pun fully intended) with me. “I was faced with a choice at a difficult age, Would I write a book? Or should I take to the stage?” Creativity takes many avenues in life and mine took me into the world of hairdressing, something that I have loved for over 40 years. I’m glad it was my chosen path as it has opened up many different avenues for me. The funny thing is though, when I was at school I dreamt (like lots of kids) of being an actor or a pop star, or both, with my debut single shooting into the hit parade at No.1, it was a very long time ago when the music charts meant something much more than they do today. I also fancied myself as an author and would scribble things down that I thought might morph into a novel at some point in my life. When I was a teenager, literature was very important, usually very pretentious works by Nabokov, Yukio Mishima, Proust, E.M Forster etc; you get the drift, serious stuffs? I gave up on that idea because everything I tried to create just didn’t come up to scratch. Now though, the pen has been resurrected, I have been inspired by my experiences over the last 40 years in hairdressing and I am writing a book, a real book at that! Possibly the biggest challenge I’ve ever undertaken. It’s not a novel, it’s a book about retailing and the way we shop these days. Online shopping fascinates me, the continuing decline of the high street worries me, and the way we are bombarded with subliminal and blatant messages through social media intrigues me. “When you’re young you find inspiration in anyone Who’s ever gone and opened up a closing door” More Pet Shop Boys lyrics, this time from my all-time favourite song from them, Being Boring released in 1990 (it would appear that I live in the musical past). These lines have pushed me to try my hardest and write something worthy of our industry that can be used as a reference tool to help hairdressers understand the changing dynamics of the consumers purchasing patterns and the seismic shift in retailing. When I was young I found inspiration in so many people in the hair world, they opened up doorways to a dazzling world that has thrilled and excited me time and time again and now it’s time to try and give something back It’s not a given that the book will be published, it’s a personal challenge and it’s an arduous one at that. But, you will be the first to know if my ambition comes to fruition, it’s going to be given my very best shot. Who knows, it might become a best seller and then I might be asked to star in a film about it and sing the theme tune… then I really would’ve written a book and taken to the stage. *Emil McMahon delivers bespoke education to salons, manages a social media consultancy and is a full-time blogger. keynote speeches there. My talks are based on my life story, about particular events, building businesses, moving to Hollywood to find myself playing Marilyn Monroe and winning Top 10 shows in the US. All that makes me sound like I’m ancient but I’m not… yet. Silicon Valley is a magical place where the energy is almost tangible and there’s such a buzz. Back in Los Angeles I did another keynote for a company called Pitch Globally Media. If you have a start up company and you’re looking for funding then this is a modern way to get investment. They are powering their way through with the new concept of getting

business companies funded. I went to a premiere of a movie called Fury of the Fist and the Golden Fleece. It’s a name you think about for a second, right? It was a hilarious movie and thank goodness since it was two hours long! I’m just back from a shoot for the Fake Bake, Save Your Skin beauty campaign with Image Focus Productions. We are doing our best to raise awareness of skin cancer and encourage people to “fake it not bake it.” More info can be found at: www.fakebake.co.uk. Until next time... remember what I told you about lips. -

here is a trend that just doesn’t seem to be dying off yet in LA, the extreme rubber duck lip look! The rubber duck lip versus natural

lip.

I decided to ask all my male friends if they found the extreme rubber duck lip look ( yes it’s now nicknamed that in the LA scene) attractive. They ALL said less is more and favoured the natural look without question. Thirty men went for natural and zero for the rubber duck lip look ladies of LA! So UK girlies if you’re thinking about going for this trend then think twice if you’re doing it to look pretty or to attract the male species... because you’re ducked! I went to Coachella festival in Palm Springs with Beyoncé headlining. The styles were the usual festival costumes, mainly consisting of denim shorts, cowboy boots with leather and denim jackets. I guess this look will never die. Wee tip - I would recommend trying Coachella if you have never been but, I will say make sure you have plenty of cash to afford decent tickets and a place to stay close by. People make Glasgow beautiful

G

lasgow salon Absolut Hair & Beauty have been gifted a full set of salon equipment by Hair and Beauty World after their premises were made inaccessible due to a colossal fire on an adjacent street. On June 15, some months after another blaze on Glasgow’s iconic Sauchiehall street caused extensive damage to the Pavilion theatre, Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building caught light. The aftermath of the towering inferno forced many businesses to remain closed due to the area being deemed unsafe for commercial use, Paul Evangelista’s Absolut Hair & Beauty was sadly one of those affected. Absolut Hair & Beauty salon owner, Paul and his team were forced to rely on their fight or fight instincts after a large portion of Sauchiehall street became an exclusion zone. Following the fire, a sense of community has shown the true strength and integrity of the Scottish hair and beauty industry. Paul told us: “There was no clarity, it was like every man for himself. All the businesses affected got together to have meetings, and within the first ten minutes of the first meeting I knew that there was no way I was going to get access to my premises anytime soon.” Understanding how bleak the situation looked when he left the meeting, Paul sprang into action and began searching for another premises so the salon could continue operating in spite of the tragic circumstances. A credit to their collective survival instincts, Paul found another property just doors up from the original site, managing the incredible achievement of only losing four business days. On their Facebook page, Absolut Hair & Beauty posted: “My utterly amazing team have pulled this off in four days and have relocated our entire business to 408 Sauchiehall street. Although it’s not home, the salon is beautiful and the main thing is we are all ready to go.” Paul went on to tell us: “I just secured 408 Sauchiehall street as fast as possible. All of that happened on Wednesday and we were open for trading again on the Thursday. It was an absolutely monumental effort from me and all my staff, I couldn’t have done it without them.” Without any access to the salon to salvage their furniture and equipment, Hair and Beauty World’s Sales Director, Shaun

74 | SalonNV Magazine

Macdonough stepped in, offering a helping hand in refurnishing and stocking the new site. Shaun said: “We’ve kitted out the whole salon for him! It’s nice to help people like that, because when the shit hits the fan like that, and he’s got stuff lying in the salon he won’t see for months. It’s fantastic that out of something so terrible something good can come of it.” The new site was previously a salon, although it had ceased trading some years ago, luckily however, some of their equipment remained. Although, as Paul describes: “The salon we went into wasn’t fully operational. We needed chairs, we needed stock and the guys at Hair and Beauty World really helped us and that will never be forgotten! We’re a L’Oreal salon, but anything we don’t get from them, we get from Hair and Beauty World.” Paul has worked from the same premises for last 19 years come November 5, and can honestly say he has built his business, his team and his reputation through blood, sweat and tears. Paul told us: “I started the business when I was 21-years-old and I put my heart and soul into it, and to see all of that just taken away is like living your worst nightmare.” It’s hard to imagine such a fast turn around or a team with such a positive attitude considering the circumstances surrounding the move but, from the moment they opened the new premises up, the salon was full within the hour, and has continued to be busy ever since. The incredible perseverance and vision of Paul and every single member of his team is a testament to not only their unwavering resilience, but also the belief in their brand and the dedication they have to their clients.

Absolut Hair & Beauty have a stellar reputation not just on home turf in Glasgow, but across the UK, being one of the most highly reviewed salons nationwide. The fire was an experience that Paul and the Absolut team will never forget, and it’s hard to imagine a collective mobilising as quickly and concisely, and in such dire circumstances to rise from the ashes. Their example is nothing short of inspiring to anyone in the industry having to fight tooth and nail for their businesses, tragic circumstance doesn’t have to be the end of your story, and it certainly won’t be for Paul and Absolut Hair & Beauty.

To see that all just taken away is like living your worst nightmare
