President’s Message At this writing, we appear to be on the other side of the worst effects of COVID-19 and its latest variant Omicron. Outdoor mask mandates have disappeared in Santa Barbara County, and we look forward to a robust season of polo in 2022.

Polo worldwide has seen a resurgence, as indicated by the number of teams registered and currently playing in Florida in the Gold Cup and slated to play in the U.S. Open. We are seeing similar demand, with a full slate of tournaments in the 12 Goal league in May and June and the High Goal league in July and August. We are fully subscribed for our 8 Goal Rincon league this summer as well. We are preparing for full attendance at all of our tournaments, from general

From the Polo Manager Poetry in motion. It is how we describe the perfect pass to a teammate, the fluid action of a thoroughbred polo pony changing directions mid-stride to carry its rider to the ball, or the sound of hooves galloping across the historic fields of Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. In a world where current events can range from the mundane to the senselessly sad, we all need a little magic and beauty in our lives. People play polo or spend time around polo for a variety of reasons. For some it’s the speed, thrill, and pure adrenaline. For others, it’s the terrific telepathy of playing a team sport with both equine and human teammates, and the joy that comes from the “Thwack” of striking the polo ball on its sweet spot. Spectators enjoy and admire well-bred polo ponies as they perform intricate maneuvers of athleticism. Regardless of what draws anyone to the sport, polo aficionados are full of passion, excitement, and admiration for a robustly beautiful and dangerously attractive sport. Part of the enchantment of polo is that for a sport with such an elite past, it has a very egalitarian future. The club has spent years building up its Polo Academy and encouraging newcomers into the sport. When a new player experiences the alchemy of becoming a polo player and unites with a horse on a good play for the first time, that is as magical as a high goal player winning the Pacific Coast Open. The epic poem of a polo season can cover a lot of ground and is meant to be shared with a cast of thousands. There is usually an unexpected plot twist. And sometimes a villain becomes the hero. Plenty of drama is leavened with humor. All set to the rhythm of hoofbeats. Sincerely,

Last June, the polo community lost a beloved colleague, member and friend. Charles Ward spent 18 years with the Santa Barbara Polo Club, playfully referring to it as his “favorite summer job.” His dedication to the sport and sharp business acumen helped expand Santa Barbara’s reputation as one of the top polo destinations in North America. Ward was a talented marketing expert who worked with many influential luxury brands. He began his career in Texas, graduating journalism school and becoming a news anchorman in Austin. He launched his first marketing company at just 26 years old and then moved on to work in California, opening an office in La Jolla and spearheading large-scale sponsorship and marketing campaigns in partnership with the San Diego Yacht Club. Later returning to Dallas, Charles founded Idea Works Global, a marketing and brand development firm where he would spend the rest of his career. His strength was forging strategic alliances between brands such as Maserati, Bombardier, Tiffany & Co., Lamborghini, Cartier, and several of the nation’s most prestigious polo clubs. In honor of Charles, flags were flown at half-mast over Holden Field during the first match of the Pacific Coast Open last August. Charles Ward’s tenacity, work ethic, and friendship will be dearly missed by the polo community at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.

CELL TOWER With her back legs kicked high in the air, Jesse Bray’s sassy red bay mare, Cell Tower, makes her presence known on the polo field. Standing at 16.1 hands tall and possibly just as wide, Cell Tower’s powerful thoroughbred physique is not one of a traditional polo pony, but her quick movements surely are. Originally owned and trained by Matthew Gonzalez, Graham Bray put the finishing touches on the mare before handing the reins over to his son, Jesse. Standing at 6’3, Jesse also shirks typical polo player stereotypes, handling his strength and force on the field with the finesse of a true athlete. Cell Tower quickly ascended rank within Jesse’s playing string, opening almost every game of the 16 Goal Series with power and poise. The confidence Cell Tower imparts on Jesse is evident. “Cell Tower’s best attribute on the field is how small she moves. She’s a big, strong mare who moves like a cat. I have had her turn inside plays that I wouldn’t attempt with just any horse,” he admits. Cell Tower was named Best Playing Pony of the USPA Silver Cup in 2021 and her pilot Jesse, Most Valuable Player.

The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club team have been dreaming of renovations to the tennis clubhouse for years. The opportunity to make the dream a reality came with the temporary closing of indoor facilities due to COVID-19 regulations. While members made use of the outdoor facilities during COVID-19, Bob Young and his team of experts at Young Construction went to work on bringing the clubhouse back to life. The decor and atmosphere of the clubhouse was, as they say, “stuck in the past,” with dark tones and clunky rock walls. The tennis clubhouse was transformed into an airy and welcoming destination with an inspired new layout, furnishings, décor, and artwork. The gorgeous Honorable Market, where members can browse the cold cabinet display for a chilled beverage (including beer & wine), charcuterie snacks, candy, and more, has become a high-value addition to the communal space. The Market opens up to the member’s lounge with comfy couches, a working fireplace, and a large TV. The lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink between sets or watch the big game with friends. The clubhouse also now offers a large game room with attached boutique, where members can shop new SBPRC merchandise and other swim and tennis items. Large windows open the game room onto courts 1 and 2, so guests can mingle during memberhosted mixers. The locker rooms received attention as well: updated amenities ensure members’ comfort after their workouts and games. The back patio ties together the communal feel of the clubhouse, creating an incredible indoor/outdoor flow with its extralarge accordion door, picnic tables, and scenic views. The light, airy, and serene new clubhouse is the perfect central location for all members to come relax and enjoy. With every change and update, the SBPRC has its members in mind, optimizing the experience, amenities, and atmosphere to create a most welcoming destination.

Eighteen-year-old Ryan Kerley was a member of the undefeated Sol de Agosto team in the 8 Goal league last season. “Winning all 4 tournaments was definitely the highlight of my polo career so far,” he admits. Ryan was also called up as a substitute player for the BenSoleimani.com team in the High Goal league, played for FMB in the 12 Goal, and was awarded MVP in the Intra-Circuit Subsidiary Cup. But he doesn’t let any of this success go to his head: year-round, Ryan remains hard at work at the barn and on the field. Ryan started playing when he was 10 years old, under the careful instruction of his father Mike Kerley, a respected horse trainer and player in the U.S. and Canada. From the start, Ryan demonstrated natural horsemanship and quickly progressed up the ranks of Junior Polo into more competitive leagues. Ryan is modest and unassuming about his accomplishments to date: “I owe all my progress in the sport to my family, especially my dad. He has done everything in his power to help me succeed.”

Ryan’s family ties to Santa Barbara go back more than 60 years. His grandfather Wendell started working at the club in 1958 when he was just 12 years old. Wendell turned pro at a young age, earning a handicap rating of 4 Goals, and winning two Pacific Coast Open titles.

With a current handicap rating of 1 Goal, Ryan strives to become one of the top-rated American players and horse trainers. Working with the horses one-on-one remains his favorite aspect of the sport. “What you put into your horses, you get out of them. They are such an important part of my life and I enjoy them every single day.”

Meant For More Charlie Walker grew up playing polo in Santa Barbara surrounded by friends and family. A talented athlete and a beloved team player, Charlie graduated from Interscholastic polo to become captain of his Intercollegiate team at Colorado State University. But in June of 2020, at the age of 21, Charlie was diagnosed with a very serious stage of Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s. With the unwavering support of his parents, extended family, and the tight-knit polo community, Charlie prevailed. “Through the struggles, I kept a positive outlook knowing that I was meant for more.” Charlie stayed connected to polo throughout his cancer journey, helping to manage operations of his CSU team. His leadership and commitment to the team earned him the Polo Training Foundation Intercollegiate Player of the Year Award in 2021, an honor that inspired his determination to get back in the saddle.

Q: Who has had the most impact on your game and involvement in polo?

Charlie: I am lucky that my dad Henry got me started when I was very young, about 5 years old. As I grew up, lots of people helped me improve – like Megan Judge, Jason Crowder, and Santi Wulff to name a few. Patrick Uretz helped me with my defensive skills, I learned to stare down and really impact my opponents thanks to him. It takes a village to become a good player, I think I have learned a little bit from everyone in polo. Q: What is your fondest polo memory? Charlie: I went to the Interscholastic regionals with the Central Coast / Santa Barbara team of myself, Cory Williams, and Jake and Luke Klentner. We spent a lot of time as a team – traveling, living, and training – and we got to know each other very well. We had a wonderful time playing together and made lots of memories.

Charlie started riding again this past January with a new outlook on life, unwavering faith, and enduring family support. He shared a few thoughts with Santa Barbara Polo Magazine, as did some of his closest friends and family.

Discovering Polo Santa Barbara Polo Pony Club recently hosted a Discover Polo Clinic in the Polo Arena. The event welcomed 16 youth to the club to learn all about the sport and try their hand at the game.

His unwavering strength, genuine heart, and wonderful sense of humor has brought him through this journey. Q: What role did polo play during your cancer journey and now your recovery? Charlie: First of all, everyone is so kind. A friend is someone who is there when you need them. I have so many great friends in polo. Some are close by, and some are abroad, and even though I might not see them I know that they are there. My polo friends near and far show up for me with so much support. As much as I was able to, I stayed involved with my CSU team – making schedules, arranging horses, and helping organize the program. It was the only way I could stay connected to the sport I love.

Q: What does the Santa Barbara Polo Club mean to you? Charlie: The people at this club make it a very special place. It is a small, close community. I believe our friendships are stronger than at other clubs because we engage with each other every day – in the barn, at the track, and on the field. You have to be diplomatic, because your friends are sometimes your teammates, and sometimes they are your opponents. Q: Who are Charlie’s Angels? Charlie: There are too many of them to count. My mother, my father, my sister, my extended family, my caretaker Alma, Jess, my friends, and all of the amazing staff and experts at City of Hope Medical Center.

He has always been a very determined person on and off the field, and I think his determination continued to give us all hope that he would find a way to overcome such a difficult challenge. Participants learned to swing with foot mallets, practice in the hitting cage, then after braiding their tails, they headed into the Arena to gain polo riding skills and learn more about the game. Several of the youth are keen to continue in the sport and will be training this spring with Claudia Uretz, on ponies provided by by Jef and Katie Graham (former Barrossa Team ponies). Pony Club District Commissioner Katie Graham invites all young horse enthusiasts to come out and enjoy Pony Club, where horsemanship, sportsmanship, and lifelong friendships are born. “My passion for Pony Club began 25 years ago with my own children. My daughter and I have made so many friends though Pony Club around the country, and even the world! It has been an amazing journey. I am happy to continue that journey here in Santa Barbara.” —Katie Graham

Both Matt Yonally and Dominique Mielle took up polo as adults. Learning to ride and swing a mallet while chasing a ball has a steep learning curve, but the exhilaration that comes from galloping into competitive league play is unmatched for these successful finance professionals.

MATT YONALLY An Ohio native, Matt Yonally is an avid traveler, skier, golfer, and all-around athlete. He is a 37-year veteran of Wall Street who lives in Santa Barbara and Paris with his wife and son. Having always enjoyed polo from the sidelines, Matt took the leap into playing 20 years ago and he’s not looking back, unless of course, it’s for a pass upfield! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO POLO? I was entertaining friends at the club about 20 years ago and commented to my wife that it looked like fun. Later that year she bought me three polo lessons with John Westley for my birthday! I’ve been blessed to be playing ever since, whether it be in the U.S., France, Uruguay, or Argentina. I played mostly arena polo until about five years ago. Melanja Jones encouraged me to play in the pro pool and low goal tournaments and that’s really where it took off. WHAT ASPECT OF THE SPORT DO YOU VALUE MOST? Of all the sports I’ve played, it’s the most exhilarating, challenging, fast, and fun! I really love to play, it is what I would choose to do on any given day. WHO HAS HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON YOUR POLO EXPERIENCE? John Westley taught me the basics of the game, and since then, Maco Llambias and Santi Wulff have been amazing in coaching me, helping me improve my game, and progress. Maco’s also been vital in helping me build and manage my string. WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT SBPRC? The friends I have made in the last 20 years – SBPRC is professionally managed, and it has great fields and great people. Melanja Jones has been a huge influence, always trying to put me together with tournaments and players to maximize fun and my ability. WHAT ARE YOUR POLO GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS? I don’t really have an ultimate goal. I would like to just keep playing and improving. I’m happiest when I’ve taken a step up to the next level. Plateauing is a disappointment. I’m always challenged to be a better player, a better horseman, and a better decision-maker on the field. Any improvement is satisfying. ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET INTO THE SPORT LATER IN LIFE? We’re incredibly fortunate to have polo of all levels in Santa Barbara - get out there and try it! It’s much more accessible than most people think! Matt will play in the 8 Goal league this spring and summer. This fall, he plans to play polo in Paris, France, and over the winter months he enjoys playing at Eldorado Polo Club in Indio, California.

DOMINIQUE MIELLE Born and raised in Paris, France, Dominique Mielle did not grow up around horses. Instead, she dedicated her life to the world of finance where she has broken new ground, recently publishing the first hedge fund memoir by a woman: Damsel in Distressed. Dominique currently splits her time between writing for a variety of publications, including Forbes, serving on several boards, and as much possible, competing in polo. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO POLO? I lived next to the last polo field in L.A., at the Will Rogers Club. Watching people come in and out intrigued me so I decided to sign up for lessons. That was about 10 years ago. I grew up in Paris and really did not ride horses or play any sports, so it was all new to me. WHAT ASPECT OF THE SPORT DO YOU VALUE MOST? There are many things I value about polo. I enjoy the speed of the game, the collaboration with my polo manager Radhika May, the team players, the act of riding, and of course the competitiveness. WHO HAS HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON YOUR POLO EXPERIENCE? My polo manager Radhika has helped my riding, and there have also been many others along the way who have had an influence on me: Justin Klentner who invited me to play with him, and Melanja Jones, who adds to the experience at SBPRC, to name a few. WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT SBPRC? It is a beautiful setting, and they have polo at every level, including very experienced professionals. It is just a very pleasant place to spend time. WHAT ARE YOUR POLO GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS? I would like to play at the beautiful fields at the Paris Polo Club at some point. Other than that, my polo career is more about the journey than ultimate goals for me. ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET INTO THE SPORT LATER IN LIFE? More so a comment than advice, but polo is very involved with respect to both time and money. Be ready to commit a considerable amount to both.

Just west of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, Coast Village Road steadily hums. The historic lifestyle and business district has embodied the quiet elegance of Montecito for more than 60 years. At the heart of Coast Village Road are dozens of family-owned and operated businesses, and the loyal community who gather around to enjoy the fruits of such labor.

GRAND PLANS In 1960, architect and businessman Sherrill Broudy envisioned an upscale business area along the Old Coast Highway in Montecito. Broudy was a man of action, and his vision soon came to fruition. Within one year, he had founded the Coast Village Association and initiated a grand plan for development. At the same time, the city of Santa Barbara annexed the land, and the name was officially changed from Old Coast Highway to Coast Village Road. Quaint offices and retail buildings went up quickly, and professionals, luxury stores, and charming restaurants moved in. Recognizing that the volume of vehicle and foot traffic was increasing, in 1968 Broudy joined with a few other property owners to petition the city to alter the driving lanes, parking lanes, and landscaped boulevards. With these changes realized, and the addition of wooden street signs at each end of the strip, the perfect village was born. Today the original charm and upscale atmosphere of Coast Village Road draws regular visitors from nearby Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as Europe and overseas. For guests and tourists, the area is a quintessential Santa Barbara experience – complete with afternoon-long strolls up and down the strip, and endless shopping and dining opportunities. The current professionals, restaurants, and stores are the same ones many locals have been frequenting for years, and sometimes generations. Business owners and clients are friends and neighbors. And many of their children grew up together.

FAMILY STYLE A Santa Barbara native, Laura Dinning first started working at the Coast Village boutique Antoinette in 1984. Her fashion career eventually took her away from home – to Beverly Hills, New York, Milan and back again – as she became one of the top specialists in Italian fashion in North America. Laura always knew that she wanted to return to Montecito; Coast Village Road lingered in her mind and in 2013, she found herself walking the familiar sidewalks. She passed the Turk Hessellund Nursery, crossed the road, and stopped dead in her tracks. The ideal corner storefront with wraparound windows had a small sign in the window: For Lease. Dinning knew immediately that this was a dream location: “I always knew that I wanted my own fashion expression to come to life in retail and finding this corner location was a dream come true.” 44

Laura soon faced the daunting task of trying to stock a retail store for opening in under two months. She contacted her favorite designers and closest friends in Italy and the U.S. and called in any, and all, favors owed to her. She grappled with the perfect name and was inspired by the beauty of the Italian language: Allora is used as a pause for thought or as a transition in Italian speech. It suggests, “pay attention, I am about to say something profound.” Allora by Laura quickly became a much-loved fashion destination and has been through the good times and the bad with the support of many loyal clientele. Laura’s daughter TJ joined the business from the start and is now Fashion Director. “TJ keeps things current and has an amazing eye for fashion. To start, I had to learn to surrender some of my ideas for hers, but it was always the right decision. There has been a natural flow to our relationship and the business,” admits Laura. Just down the road, the owners of The Tennis Shop, Tony and Libby Hammond, also understand the importance of family symbiosis when it comes to business. The husband and wife team moved to California from Australia in 1996 and started their U.S. careers at a country club in Los Angeles. They would often visit Santa Barbara on the weekends and fell in love with Montecito’s village-like atmosphere, which reminded them of their hometown overseas. They jumped on the opportunity to purchase a local tennis business, invested in a location on Coast Village Road, and for almost 20 years since, their shop has been a much-loved Montecito institution. One of the greatest challenges for the Hammonds remains the 7-day a week commitment to retail that it takes to maintain a successful business – especially in light of the fires, mudslides, and then COVID-19. Yet the couple are both former pro tennis players, which means they have a deep passion for the sport. This passion has kept The Tennis Shop in fine form and strengthens their bonds with clientele: “Many of our clients have become good friends. We don’t often advertise, and we don’t do social media. We rely on the strong local community and word-of-mouth for our business.” Like the Hammond’s, the work of husband-and-wife duo Michael and Carole Ridding, owners of Silverhorn Jewelry, is an absolute labor of love. The Riddings were drawn to Montecito from Alberta, Canada, over 30 years ago. They knew almost immediately that their business belonged along Coast Village Road and found a two-storey location that served them well for more than two decades. Five years ago, the Riddings decided that it was time for a change. Silverhorn relocated to 1235 Coast Village Road: a destination where design, gallery, and retail spaces became one. The design studio section of the single-floor setting features Old World desks, tools, and exposed utilities, while the gallery portion features modern, contemporary displays. At all times, there is a member of the Silverhorn family present to take care of clients, whether they are international visitors, regular clientele, friends, or neighbors. Noel Bendle, Silverhorn’s head designer since 1997, is extended family to the Riddings, and the couple's dogs are almost as well loved as the exquisite jewelry pieces themselves. A visit to Silverhorn is one that visitors do not forget. And the same is true for any experience along Coast Village Road – a charming, elegant village with a great history and strong future. WHAT LED YOU TO THE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY?

MW: My mother was one of the few women in what was once a man’s world, starting her career as a broker at Merrill Lynch back in the ’70s. I literally grew up “in the business,” playing on Mom’s office floor, and I loved the excitement of it all so much that I never seriously considered anything else.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? MW: Building and preserving wealth through the generations. I love both the near-term decision-making of managing a portfolio and helping clients navigate the big-picture legacy planning questions. Helping clients work toward their wealth goals and having an effect on the wealth of their children, grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren is profoundly gratifying.

Q: WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE FOR RETIREES TODAY?

MW: My answer to this question last year was “Relying on bonds for income” because I felt the onset of rising rates. This year, my eye is on inflation.

Q: WHAT EXCITING AND NEW HAPPENED

FOR YOU IN 2021 (THE YEAR TIME FORGOT!)?

MW: After being a member of the polo club for five years, I moved from being a spectator to a player, and I’m loving it! I started taking lessons in July, joined the coaching league, and bought my first polo pony, Malawi, in August. I’m thrilled to be a part of the polo community in one of the most beautiful settings in the world!

TENNIS EXTRAORDINAIRE A native of Goleta, Bart Hillock is an institution of tennis here in southern California. He was a Singles and Doubles star throughout college, a two-time Doubles All-American, Doubles winner at the Ojai Tennis Tournament, and a runner-up in the NCAA Division II National Champions. Bart first worked as an Assistant Pro at Cathedral Oaks Tennis Club and was then promoted to Interim Tennis Director. In 1987 he was hired as Tennis Director at Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, and the rest is history! For over 17 years, Bart led all tennis activities and taught lessons to players of all levels, from beginners to national champions. He then took a sabbatical to pursue his dreams of traveling and fixing up and flipping homes. Just over three years ago, Bart returned to SBPRC as Tennis Ambassador. The club is like a second home to him, and he refers to the members as his “extended family.” Monica Finley and Stephanie Stone recently caught up with Bart to reflect on his epic career and service to the tennis community.

Q: What makes a good tennis pro?

Q: What is it like to have such a great tennis career?

Bart: Being involved in the facility, and the clients, members, and other staff and coaches. We are like one big happy family.

Bart: I feel like the luckiest man on earth! I get to work with the best tennis professionals in all the country, at the best facility, with the most awesome members.

Q: What makes Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club special?

Q: What is your best piece of coaching advice?

Bart: When I played at the club as a teen, there were only two courts but by the time I was hired as a pro, the club had eight courts! It's grown into a beautiful facility – I love the membership and what we have built. I have been to many other clubs and the thing I love most about our club is the people.

Bart: Win the last point. Q: When did your hair turn gray? Bart: When I hired Steph! Q: Is there anything you would do differently over the course of your career?

Q: Do you have any funny memories from lessons over the years? Bart: Many years ago, some of the clients I would train would take Nitroglycerin pills for their hearts before the lesson. I told them I wasn't going to teach them anymore because I didn't want to give them mouth-to-mouth!

Bart: Absolutely nothing.

From The Courts The club welcomes members and guests for competitive leagues, training and lessons, clinics, social gatherings and, as always, a friendly atmosphere. Eight championship tennis courts provide ample space for players of all ages to practice their skills and there are exciting improvements in the works! Courts 1 and 2 are undergoing a complete overhaul from the ground up. The brandnew post-tension courts will serve as the primary exhibition courts for the club. The six satellite courts are also undergoing improvements, with resurfacing and fresh paint in 2022. New LED lighting will be installed for the six lit courts, improving play and safety for all members. The club also welcomes Tennis Professional Byron Wu to the staff team. Bryon is a skilled player and instructor who played club tennis for UCSB and has years of coaching experience in the Nike Tennis Summer Camps and the Brady Tennis Camps. In addition to his tennis skills, Byron is also a certified spin instructor, a trained opera singer, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. There’s nothing Byron can’t do! Byron joins Tennis Director Stephanie Stone in leading tennis camps and events this summer season. Assisting with the camps are Luke Williams and Austin Stone, two talented young players who are graduates of the summer camp program. Luke and Austin bring hands-on experience and lots of enthusiasm to their new role as Junior Tennis Assistants. The tennis team holds the club and its members near and dear to their hearts, and curates a selection of programs tailored specifically to member players. From league play and clinics to peewee tennis and golden year mixers, the club strives to provide a welcoming environment for all tennis members, new and old.

Fitness & Swim

Summer Camps Junior Tennis Camp runs from mid-June to mid-August, and children of all levels are welcome! Half-day and full-day options are available for kids ages 6 and up and camps offer a series of drills, instruction, games, and activities to keep the next generation engaged and entertained. The Polo Academy invites everyone age six and above to learn to play polo. USPA Certified Polo Instructor Jeff Scheraga heads the Polo Academy and welcomes new players to learn about polo and be part of the club through lessons, clinics, coaching league, and arena league for adults and youth. No previous riding experience is required! The Polo Academy has safe, reliable polo ponies that teach students to ride and play all at once. There are a variety of programs available for students at all levels. SBPRC is the home of the UCSB and Westmont USPA Intercollegiate teams as well as the high school USPA Interscholastic team. New players can take advantage of lesson packages that include horse, tack, instruction, and equipment. After beginner lessons, players progress to intermediate arena polo programs and coaching league games on the grass. The club also welcomes students from other clubs looking to take their polo to the next level. MEET ROCKY The Scheraga family have owned “Rocky” (1994 Jockey Club name Spiced Rum), a chestnut gelding, since he was 5 years old. Jeff learned to play polo on Rocky in Central New York. Rocky’s playing career came to a halt when he suffered an injured tendon on the field, however, after a year of rest and recovery, Rocky has continued for 10 years and counting as one of the best teachers a player could ride. Rocky is known for his patience and his ability to show students how to find the ball. Since his time as a school horse, Rocky has helped more than 50 new players fall in love with the sport. The Basics

Game Day Glossary

The object of the game is to move the polo ball through the goal posts to score. Polo teams change direction after each goal is scored in order to equalize field and weather conditions. The rules of polo are intended to ensure the safety of polo ponies and players. The essential concept is the “line of the ball,” a right-of-way established by the path of the traveling ball. Any infraction of the game rules is a foul and most often results in the umpires awarding a penalty shot. Penalty shots range in distance from the goal end, depending on the severity of the foul.

Flagman: A goal observer who signals that a goal is scored by waving a flag overhead, or that no goal is scored by waving the flag below the waist.

By The Numbers Polo balls are made of plastic and measure approximately 3½ inches in diameter. A polo mallet is made up of a cane shaft measuring 51 to 54 inches with a 9-inch wooden head. Players use the wide face of the head to hit the ball. The polo field measures 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. A team is made up of 4 players and each player is assigned a handicap up to 10. The higher the handicap, the better the player. There are 7½ minutes in each chukker (period of play) and players are permitted 3 minutes between chukkers to change ponies. Top polo ponies travel as fast as 35 mph.

Hook: Using one’s mallet to block or interfere with an opponent’s swing. Knock-in: When the ball travels wide of the goal mouth and over the back line, the defending team hits it back into play from just inside the back line. Ride-off (or Bump): A defensive attempt to move a player off the line of the ball by making shoulder-toshoulder contact with an opponents’ pony. Third Man: A Referee on the sidelines of the field who makes a final decision if the on-field umpires disagree. Throw in: To start or resume play, an umpire rolls the ball down the center of a line up of players and ponies. Umpires: Two mounted officials on the field who are responsible for enforcing the rules of play.
