to the 4th staging of the Jamaica Bridal Expo. The Jamaica Bridal Expo is a unique networking event developed to showcase Jamaica as a premier destination for weddings, honeymoons and romance. For the second year in a row, we have also added the Wedding Conference, which is open to wedding professionals at all levels. The creation of the Jamaica Bridal Expo arose from a solid collaboration between three visible and successful individuals in the wedding and event planning industry. With expertise in the areas of destination wedding planning, event design, event management and production the team came together to create the Jamaica Bridal Expo. Note from the Publisher Pelican Publishers Limited is really pleased to once again bring you the official magazine of Jamaica’s premier wedding event, the Jamaica Bridal Expo. The magazine has been officially renamed ‘I Do Jamaica’ and represents a purposeful shift from featuring the particulars of a wedding event, to featuring Jamaica as a destination. This shift is timely and relevant and the Expo organizers are to be lauded for their forward thinking. Indeed the statistics speak convincingly: According to a prior study done by The U.S. Travel Association (formerly TIA), the summary indicated the following: ‘Jamaica has what the $13 Billion Newlywed Travel Market wants from a romance destination. The 4.2 million Americans who will wed in the coming year have what Jamaica wants, because they will fill millions of airline seats, fill millions of room nights, and create a vortex of positive social media output that promotes the destination. Jamaica has ample room for growth in both honeymoon and destination wedding business, and could easily see a boost of $ Hundreds of Millions $ in additional tourism revenues from this niche.’ And so it makes sense that the premier wedding magazine will provide relevant materials, which can be used by decision makers regarding whether Jamaica is the place for them to come- for their wedding, honeymoon or romance and everything in between. So as of 2015 and beyond ‘I Do Jamaica’ is the new face of the Jamaica Bridal Expo. While coordinating the publication, what became unassailable, was the fact of just the sheer diversity and number of people who really do come to Jamaica to get married (a few of these ‘real wedding’ stories have been included). On another note, no matter how many times we produce a magazine, each time we do one it is as though doing the first one…and in some kind of way it is. The process must of necessity start anew and that it is why I am so grateful to the people who have enabled us to do it again. To the organizers Jo-Anne, Kathy and Peter we say thank you; it has been a wonderful journey with you again! Of course, our kind, visionary sponsors – all of whom have been a pleasure to work with; our writers and highly talented photographers and of course the Pelican team. Fortunately for us, weddings are such amazing events and Jamaica is such a beautiful place that the fusion of things Jamaican and weddings in one publication was in itself a source of pleasure; so while being excited and energized about producing an amazing magazine, we found it quite a pleasant task. Say “I Do” at R.G.D.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue: that adage sums up all the planning and preparation that goes into making your wedding one that you will always remember. However, getting married does not have to break the bank, and the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) has been helping couples to say “I DO” in an affordable, and hassle- free way with its Registry Wedding Service. The RGD’s Registry Wedding is a private service that offers couples an intimate ceremony. With this service, couples receive: a choice of an outdoor or indoor venue, a Marriage Officer or Civil Registrar to perform the wedding, two certified copies of the marriage certificate within three (3) working days, and an opportunity to include up to 10 persons as guests.

Wedding ceremonies are done Mondays to Thursdays between the hours of 9:00am – 4:00pm, and Fridays 9:00am- 3:00pm. Saturday weddings are also available from 9:00am -3:00pm; though by appointment only. What to wear on your wedding day? The RGD Wedding service allows couples to get married comfortably clad; so you can get married in the traditional gown and tuxedo or you can opt for more casual attire. To access the Registry Wedding service, you must secure a Minister’s license from the Ministry of Justice, and submit this license, along with the birth certificates and valid identification for both the bride and groom to be, as well as to provide the occupation of bride and groom. If either the bride or groom was married before, certified copies of the final divorce papers and the marriage certificate for the previous marriage, as well as death certificate if the spouse is deceased, must be provided. After submitting the application and paying the relevant fees, you will be well on your way to enjoying the convenience of the Registry Wedding service. Getting Married, Why not use the RGD’s Registry Wedding service? It is a convenient and affordable way to say “I DO”. The RGD’s Registry Wedding service is offered at all ten (10) RGD Offices island wide.

Our wedding ceremony was a small, joyous and intimate affair that can also be summed up as a “Whirlwind Wedding Done Right.� From the planning to the execution everything was done in the space of a week. It was a wonderful affair with family, good friends and colleagues supporting us as we took our first step as a married couple.

The day was made possible in no small part by our family and friends who worked hard with us to pull it off, even working late into the night at the venue to ensure that everything was perfect for the big day. Our wedding proved that even the seemingly impossible is possible with the help of good family, friends and God. In closing the memories made on that day will stay in our hearts for decades to come.

The Practice In the past, Indian marriages were always arranged by the parents. East Indians were only allowed to marry within their caste. Indians thought that the practice of choosing partners from the same economic, educational, and social status would ensure compatibility between couples. This tradition is not as widely practised as before. Once a wedding date has been set, a neuta (oral invitation accompanied by uncooked rice grains covered in turmeric) is given out to relatives and friends. A few days before the wedding, the prospective bride and groom go through a purification ceremony which takes place at their respective houses. This tradition involves covering the bodies of the bride and groom with a mixture of haldi (turmeric) powder and oil. An exciting part of the pre-wedding activities for the bride is the mehndi painting. This occurs the night before the main event, when the bride and her female relatives and friends gather for a light evening of fun, and to get their hands and feet painted with henna. The designs are usually floral which is symbolic of fertility.

The Day The day of the wedding begins with a procession by the groom’s relatives and friends. The dancers dressed in their colourful ethnic costumes are accompanied by a band of musicians playing the dholak (two-sided drum,) sarangie (fiddle) and manjeera (mini cymbals). The procession, which is called the baraat (wedding party) proceeds from the dulha’s (groom’s) house to the dulhan’s (bride’s) home or ceremony site. The dulha is dressed in a formal kurta suit or a jura-jama gown (dependent on his choice of dress) and a mour (headwear). He follows behind on a white horse or other chosen mode of transportation. On reaching the bride’s home or ceremony site, the groom is greeted by the bride’s mother, who breaks a coconut and sprinkles the water, while the priest chants verses. The groom waits for the bride to make her entrance, along with her bridal party. He then places a garland around her neck and she returns the gesture. The baraat is welcomed with sweet drinks.
The wedding ceremony takes place under a canopy, mandap or bamboo shed with a centre post. Each of the posts is decorated with mango and banana leaves and fruits or coconuts are hung from the four corners. The vedi (altar) is decorated with a small kadai (fire bowl), container of water, an oil lamp, some grains and murties (images of deities). The priest, groom and his parents are seated around the vedi. To symbolise a bright and prosperous marriage life, the groom starts the ceremony by lighting the lamp during the chanting of mantras (verses). The bride is then escorted by her parents and sisters to join the others around the vedi. This is followed by the kanyadaan, which is performed by the father of the bride, who gives his daughter to the groom. The father of the bride places the right hand of his daughter over the right hand of the groom, and holy water is poured on the palms of the couple while the priest recites Vedic hymns. The most

Rites important of the marriage rites are the mangal phera, in which the bride’s sari is tied to the grooms shawl, and the saptapadi in which the couple takes seven steps around the fire and make a promise to each other during each cycle to ensure wedded bliss. The tying of the bride to the groom symbolises the tying of the hearts and souls of the couple and signifies wedlock. The bride will assume her position on the left side of her husband, having moved from the right side where she sat for the duration of the wedding.

The Hindu marriage act dated December 19, 1957 gave the rights of marriage officers to Hindu and Moslems priests.
A Hindu marriage is legally accepted after the completion of the mangal phera/saptapadi. At this stage, the husband applies the symbolic vermillion (sindoor) along the parted hair of his wife or her manglasutra tied around her neck, and which are to be worn until the death of her husband. The post wedding rituals comprise of vidaai and reception. In the vidaai ceremony, the family of the bride gives her a sobbing farewell. Before leaving, the bride throws back three handfuls of rice

Ethiopian Orthodox Wedding An Ethiopian Orthodox wedding ceremony is an ancient sacrament, full of profound symbolism and meaning. The ceremony is completely stunning for cultural details, to the majestic use of colours and intricate clothing design. Prepare to be blown away by the warm welcome from the bride and groom’s family as well as the non-stop clapping, laughing, eating, drinking and dancing throughout. The couple is led through the ceremony by their priest where most rites are performed three times to represent the Holy Trinity. The weddings begin with a betrothal ceremony in which the rings are blessed. The priest recites the blessings and Bible passages, then makes the sign of the cross while holding the rings and declaring the betrothal. Alternately, the priest may hold the rings in his hands while pressing the bride and groom's forehead three times each. After this, the priest or the deacon exchanges the rings between the couple's will be compensated by the other.

Lit Candle After the rings are exchanged, the priest gives the couple lit candles to hold in their left hands for the remainder of spiritual willingness to receive God's blessings. The priest also joins the couples right hands together while praying for their marriage. The bride and groom continue to hold hands during the ceremony as a symbol of their oneness.
Crowning The crowning is the centerpiece of the Orthodox marriage ceremony. Crowns can be made of orange blossom, myrtle leaves, semiprecious stones and metals, or threads of gold and crimson, which represent the royalty of marriage. As with all other things in the Orthodox church, there are layers of symbolism when it comes to the crowns. Namely, the crowns are a visible reminder of the crowns that await the couple in Heaven. But the crowns also serve a more immediate purpose: the bride and groom have just become the King and Queen of this newly created family.

The Common Cup
The bride and groom take three sips of wine from a shared cup. The process of the common cup is based on the wedding of Cana of Galilee, where Jesus turned water into wine. The cup represents life and symbolizes the couple's mutual sharing of joy and sorrow. As they drink wine from the common cup, they are reminded that from that moment they will share everything, doubling their joys and dividing their sorrows.
Circling The Table
Following the common cup ritual, the priest leads the couple three times around the altar on which a Bible and cross rest. This dance predates Christianity, representing the dance around the Ark of the Covenant. The choir sings three hymns as the couple circles the table. Traditional Blessings
At the ceremony's end, the priest recites parting blessings upon the newlyweds. To the groom he may say: "Be thou Isaac and multiply as Jacob. Walk in peace and work in righteousness, as the commandments of God." To the bride he may say: "And thou O Bride, be though magniconditions of the law, for so it is well pleasing unto God.

his Caribbean Queen
The Wedding So they said their vows humbly and quietly in the presence of friends and family. A Bahai wedding ceremony on a small, secluded beach at Great Huts in Boston, Portland. "We will all verily abide by the will of God..." It was a steaming hot day Portland style for a morning wedding that started in the afternoon. But the bride wasn't late... The late comers were the folk who were attending the ceremony from other parts of the island. There was also the blessing of a morning shower! And It was a blessing. The bride walked onto the beach to the sound and polyrhythms of Afro-Caribbean sacred drums played and recorded especially for the day by a master drummer in Colombia. The beautiful Jamaican bride Subrina ‘Brina’ Ward descended barefooted onto the beach, as she would on stage when performing, to meet her Scottish Highlander Kieran Murray. He was clad in traditional kilt in a Clan Murray tartan, all decked out with sporran and belt, brought all the way from Scotland by his parents - inna tropical style, the groom chose sandals.
The bride’s dress was from a California designer and embellished by the bride herself with peacock feathers and irregular tucks at the base to allow walking with ease. On her head was her signature designed "Birds Net Veil" – a one of a kind piece. The wedding rings were presented in a conch shell. After the ceremony, scrumptious, delicate, all you can eat Jamaican cuisine awaited the happy witnesses. They had to wait a while however, as the happy couple traveled the winding Fairy Hill road towards an isolated San San Beach to capture some of the most memorable photographs on a joyful day full of love, sun, fun, family, and friends to support the transitioning lives of two individuals from two different backgrounds, two different seas and cultures to make one wave, to warble in one tree together. The Meeting " Hi. So are you a student here ..?" "No, I'm teaching bass guitar at the School of Music" ... They met at the cafeteria of the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts. It was a coincidental patty and coco bread lunch meeting. Where did that come from?
4 Best Man Back in the day finding a wife was not about love or attraction and compatibility. A female would often be kidnapped from a neighbouring community when local females were unavailable. The man who would become the groom would set out with his ‘brides-knight’ on this conquest. The best man was most likely the man who best helped the groom to obtain his bride; he would also be relied upon to stand guard at the wedding just in case the incensed family of the kidnapped bride showed up to try and reclaim her.
There are some traditions that have become staples in Jamaican weddings. And we have just embraced them. But where did these traditions originate and why? Here are some interesting snippets about the origins of five routine ones. 1 The White Dress ‘Here comes the bride, all dressed in white.’ Even a song has been done about it. The occasional bride may show up attired in a red, teal or pink dress, but the wedding tradition of a white (or slightly off-white/pearl) dress has been a mainstay in our culture. This tradition comes to us straight from…(drum-roll please) the Victorian era—in fact, from Queen Victoria herself, who was married to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. At the time, red was actually the white of today or the bride would just wear the nicest dress she had. It is said that the young queen was neither the first, nor only royalty to have worn white; but she is credited with the entrenching of the now popular custom
5 The Honeymoon" No matter how great …or lousy the wedding, a ‘honey moon’ is sure to follow. Where did this come from? There are a few prevailing stories. a. The honeymoon is said to have come about and gotten its name in Babylonia from the practice of drinking honeyed mead for the first month of marriage. The mead, which was said to have aphrodisiac properties and enhance fertility, was provided by the fathers-in-law.
2 The Bouquet The wedding bouquet – the most unwavering of all traditions, had very smelly beginnings. In the early years, brides would carry garlic and dill. (There are many differing reasons given for that tradition). Nevertheless, over time, the fragrance changed and herbs and spices gave way to flowers and ferns; ergo our modern bridal bouquet.
b. In another myth, the Norse word "hjunottsmanathr" is considered by some to be the origin of the word honeymoon. Hjunottsmanathr actually means "in hiding". The best man origin story (#4) seems to support this myth. Apparently, grooms who abducted their brides from local villages, kept them in hiding until they were pregnant, or until the bride's family ceased searching, and then presented themselves to the bride's family as a fait accompli.`
3 The Give Away Father Walking down the aisle with dad was not always a symbol of pride and joy of the proud father; in antiquated tradition, it was rather a sign that the father had indeed accepted the dowry price and was now officially handing over the payment, hence keeping his end of the bargain.
