Great People Make Favorite & Safer Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

September Staff Member of the Month Jeff Nystrom, Bartender Congratulations to our Bartender Jeff for being named September Staff Member of the Month! Jeff ’s ideas for creating new cocktails and beverages for our Pool Bar were a hit with our members this past summer. He also worked with our Banquet Manager Carmina to organize and streamline transactions and assisted our Beverage Manager Patrick with inventory. Jeff truly did a tremendous job at the pool this summer. His commitment to BCC is unparalleled, and he is an excellent asset to our Club! Way to go Jeff, on this welldeserved award!

October Staff Member of the Month Shaun Skeen, Assistant Restaurant Chef Chef Shaun is an integral part of the À la Carte team and the Culinary department. As Assistant Restaurant Chef, Shaun has made his mark through his hard work, dedication, and diligence within the operation. While completing his daily duties, he always has his eye on the team and where he can mentor and improve. He is always willing to jump in and assist whenever and wherever needed. We are very lucky to have Shaun as part of the Culinary team and the knowledge he brings with him.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper

On November 2, our Team resumed work on the East Course Long-Term Maintenance Plan. The plan was developed in 2018, and implementation began in 2019. This fall, we are focusing on drainage on holes #3 approach, #7 left rough, and lower #11 fairway (the area between the tee and the creek). Our Team will also be installing a forward tee on #11, extending fairways on numerous holes. A large willow oak will be transplanted in the left rough on #7 to begin the replacement of trees in decline. Weather permitting, we expect this work to be complete by the beginning of the 2021 golf season. Our long-term drainage plan is a result of record-breaking rainfall in 2018 with over 75" of precipitation (33" above the 147-year annual average), followed by 55" in 2019 (14" above the annual average). As of November 2020, we are currently 8.45" above the annual average. Turf Drainage Co. of America formulated this plan after visiting the property in October 2018 and was hired based on their proposal and track record of solving complex drainage issues on golf courses throughout the United States. This plan, which is being implemented by local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons, is a combination of excess water collection and transportation. This collection system consists of well-placed open basins that collect excessive surface water before entering the fairway areas, further saturating the soil profile. These basins collect surface water, and due to their patented design, they also collect seepage Surface drainage basin water in the ground through the sidewalls. However, no surface collection system alone can adequately drain the course without a method to remove water that 14

Tim Kennelly in front of the willow oak that will be transplanted in the left rough on hole #7

has saturated the soil and addresses water seeping from the ground (via springs) on holes completed such as #3, #7, #10, and #11. A key feature of the master drainage plan is creating large seepage drain fields using a Turf Drain pipe. This Turf Drain pipe product is the fastest, most efficient product available for seepage drainage in the soil. The Turf Drain product is placed in a trench 2-3 feet deep backfilled with straight sand engineered for our drainage needs. To date, 1.5 miles of pipe out of the over 15 miles in the overall plan have been installed. We continue to make progress and are confident that with this plan, we can maximize the collection and transportation of drainage

GROUNDS

water to create an infrastructure to handle excessive moisture. The result is a consistently well-drained soil profile, healthy playing surfaces that can withstand the summer stress periods, and firmer playing surfaces. As a reminder, both the East and West fairways will be core aerated during the week of November 30-December 4. With core aeration underway on the West fairways, the East Course will be open for an extended period until the West fairways are complete. Closing day is traditionally the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

Please be mindful that temperatures do not allow for recovery of playing surfaces during the late fall and winter months. Continue to repair your ball marks, replace your divots and wherever possible, rotate from where you tee off to reduce wear and tear from concentrated areas. The less damage from the winter will translate into better playing conditions in the spring. ◆

GOLF Magazine's 2020-2021

The Key to Better Greens The proper technique for repairing ball marks is quite simple and requires only a few seconds of effort:

TOP 100

1. Insert any pointed tool at a 45-degree angle behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center of the ball mark

IN THE U.S.

2. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center

COURSES

3. Afterward, tamp the area down with your putter

A Reputation for Excellence

Once again, Baltimore Country Club's Championship East Course has earned a spot on the GOLF Magazine biennial rank of the best courses in America! TOP 100 COURSES IN THE COUNTRY #75 - Baltimore Country Club East Course TOP 100 COURSES IN THE NORTHEAST #29 - Baltimore Country Club East Course

Please follow the Golden Rule for divot recovery to ensure our fairways remain in top condition for the 2021 golf season: • A divot large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced • Every divot not replaced has no chance of survival. This is the best opportunity we have for recovery from divots since recovery from our seed mix will be non-existent until cooler nights and more favorable temperatures return in the fall months 15
