Great People Make Favorite & Safer Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
November Staff Member of the Month Annett Zimmer, Human Resources Assistant
Congratulations Annett for being named November Staff Member of the Month! She took the initiative to work from home while recovering from surgery so the Human Resources Department would not fall behind and so she could hit the ground running when she returned to the office. She also assists with multiple payroll initiatives and has uncovered internal transitional system issues. Since Human Resources is more of a behind the scenes department, Annett truly is an unsung hero and we are so grateful to have her on our team!
Leadership Award Lauren Thurston Private Events Coordinator
When COVID-19 prevented a local area hospital from holding their traditional annual employee recognition event, Lauren presented alternative options to the client. With her expertise, professionalism, and guidance she was able to help the client switch from an in-person event to a curbside pickup and virtual live stream where over 340 physicians, nurses, and health care staff were able to enjoy a hot meal and specialty beverage, while being shown appreciation for their hard work during this pandemic.
Cathy Wagner Director of Horticulture
When the Mayor announced stricter COVID-19 restrictions for Baltimore City in December, upcoming holiday events were relocated from Roland Park to Five Farms. Cathy and her team had only one day to decorate the entire Five Farms clubhouse for the holiday season! The Horticulture Team exceeded expectations with the holiday décor which in turn gave our members a sense of normalcy during this unpredictable time. Accomplishing this feat is a true testament to Cathy’s leadership and the quality of her entire team!
Simple Truth Award Dustin Heflin, Banquet Chef Lauren Laughlin, Executive Pastry Chef Sonia Trepetin, Storeroom Clerk Taylor Suehle, Purchasing & Culinary Service
(Pictured Left to Right) Dustin Heflin, Lauren Laughlin, Sonia Trepetin, and Taylor Suehle
These individuals truly embodied the Simple Truth when they worked together to create a special moment for one of our vendors. Sonia noticed that one of our delivery drivers hadn’t been to the Club in a while. After speaking with him, she learned of a recent death in his family. Sonia notified the team, and they instantly sprang into action. Dustin and the Banquet Team put together a dinner, Lauren made a chocolate cake, and the Culinary Team signed a card expressing their condolences. Sonia and Taylor presented the driver with the dinner and card when he came for his next delivery. To say the driver was overwhelmed by this gesture is an understatement! Thank you all for going above and beyond to create this special moment! 1

GOLFFIT TIP
By Fitness & Wellness Director/TPI Level 1 & 2 Janine Rich-Scarlett Golfers need to be able to separate the lower and upper body to efficiently swing. At that same time, thoracic mobility and a stable lower body play a role to support the body disassociation. If a golfer cannot achieve separation, one swing characteristic they might see is Over the Top. ◆
SINGLE LEG WITH ROTATION
(This is a good drill for golfers who sway or slide)
Here are three progression exercises you can do:
SEATED THORACIC ROTATION
1. Starting in your golf set up position, stand on one leg, holding the golf club across the chest 2. Keeping your eyes on the “ball,” begin to rotate your torso (trunk) over the stable leg and return to setup. Repeat 5-10 times, and switch legs 3. Backswing Turn: improves takeaway sequence 4. Downswing Turn: slows the pelvis down 1. Sit tall on the edge of a chair 2. Place a golf club across your back along your shoulders (not across your neck) 3. Keeping your feet and knees together (allowing no separation), rotate to your back swing then rotate to your downswing. Engage your core as you complete this drill and connect your feet to the ground FORWARD LUNGE WITH ROTATION
Your Success is Our Success My husband and I have been going to yoga class on Monday nights, this is our third year. Having done yoga only once before this class, I was
surprised how much I got out of it and how much we enjoy it. We have a fun group
in our class!
1. Standing tall, core engaged, step forward with one leg, lower your body until the thigh is parallel to the ground, knee over the ankle, and the back legs knee to 90 degrees (a few inches off the floor) 2. Pause and rotate your chest/arms over the front leg, return and push back off the front foot to starting position. Repeat on the other side
Our teacher, Rebecca Printen is a huge part of why I enjoy the class and have continued with it. I am not usually great with consistent exercise, but Rebecca’s class is different. The class is challenging and you can feel the progress. The best thing about the class is the teacher, Rebecca. She teaches us the how and why of the practices and how they help the body. Her friendly
demeanor makes the class enjoyable and fun. I highly recommend it! ◆

GOLF
TIPS FROM THE PRO By Joanna Coe, Director of Instruction What is the Bounce and Why is it Your Friend? Wedge bounce by definition is the angle created between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole or trailing edge of your wedge. This is the area of the club that hits through the ground as it contacts the ball. You can typically find the bounce angle under the loft on your wedge in small print. World renowned wedge manufacturer Bob Vokey says “the bounce is your friend.” Essentially, the bounce offers forgiveness just in case you don't strike the shot perfectly. The bounce can help prevent the leading edge from digging into the ground. During a round of golf, you will face many different lies whether is it tight, soft, fluffy sand or hard packed sand; therefore, you want a variety of wedge bounces that are ideal for your swing and the different lies. To utilize the bounce and not stick the leading edge in the ground, be sure to setup with a neutral shaft at address (do not lean your hands in front of the ball). Then, be sure to swing the clubhead so the bottom of the club, or the sole, is brushing the ground for several inches. It should feel as if the hands and clubhead arrive at the ball at the same time.
High Bounce The greater the wedge bounce degree, the higher the leading edge is off the surface at address. We recommend high bounce (10 degrees or more) for those who take a deep divot with a steep angle of attack. Mid Bounce The mid bounce wedge (7-10 degrees) is very versatile and can fit most swing types.
Low Bounce The low bounce wedge (4-6 degrees) is ideal for tight lies around the green and for those with shallower attack angles and minimal divots.
Please see a member of the BCC Instructional Team for advice on your wedges! ◆

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper On behalf of the Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team, I would like to thank members who contributed to BCC’s Staff Holiday Fund. We appreciate your generosity! I would also like to extend a “thank you” to everyone at the Club who helped turn a challenging situation at the start of 2020 into a record-breaking year for golf. To date, nearly 43,000 rounds (despite the seven weeks golf services shut down in the spring) have been played in the fiscal year, compared to a budget of 36,000 rounds. You and your guests came out in record-setting fashion whether it was to enjoy the great outdoors, spend quality time with family, compete in a friendly match, or just because the Club provided a place of safety and comfort and to get away from the outside world. Finally, we welcome all the newcomers to the game, and we hope you continue to participate in this great sport! Due to heavy use on the Driving Range grass areas, we rely on artificial surfaces to preserve grass when conditions do not allow recovery. This winter, our team installed covers on the courses to increase surface and soil temperatures, encouraging top growth, seed germination, and root growth in thin areas. The covers also protect the bermudagrass from extremely low temperatures during the winter months (including bermudagrass tees on the West Course). The grass tees will remain closed throughout the winter season and will open once temperatures are consistently between 60-75 degrees to ensure their adequate recovery. To date, we have received less than six inches of snow, compared to an annual average of twenty-plus inches. 2020 was another year we exceeded the average precipitation totals. Our official rain gauge at the Golf & Grounds Maintenance Facility recorded 54.31" for the year or 12.43" above average for the year. Unfortunately, the last two years have been wet, and 2020 is now one of the top 11 wettest years in history, surpassing 2019.

Finally, as conditions allow, the West Course will be open for play. Since temperatures are at a point where growth is non-existent, please repair ball marks, replace divots, and rotate where you tee off to reduce wear and tear in concentrated areas. Less damage in the winter will translate into better playing conditions in the spring. ◆

RACQUETS
GET EXCITED FOR OUR SPRING/SUMMER SEASON! Dear Racquets Enthusiasts, Your BCC Racquets Team is so excited to welcome everyone back to tennis and pickleball at Five Farms in just a few weeks. We have added more programming, including camps, clinics, and special events for the whole family. As always, there will be a junior clinic option for every adult clinic so the whole family can have fun at the same time. Getaway Game Night will kickoff early this year to allow parents to enjoy a night out while we have fun with the kids. All of our programming will continue to offer 50% for siblings and guests! Be on the lookout for our Pro Shop Spring Sale! All clothing will be discounted 10% to 50% (includes new arrivals) through April. Pickleball paddles will be 15% off. We hope to continue to offer the latest and most fashionable styles right here at BCC, including a surprise new vendor! We would like to thank you for an amazing 2020 season that included many unknowns and continually changing guidelines. Through it all, it was our best yet! This winter, we had our courts re-graded and made updates that solved problems with court four and addressed drainage issues on other courts. We are thrilled to welcome you back! Every year we look for the best up-and-coming professionals from around the world to join us at BCC. Through their shared passion and excitement, we continue to add new experiences that will last a lifetime. This summer is no different! It is our pleasure to welcome our 2021 Summer Racquets Professional Staff. Brandon Day will be returning as our Head Summer Professional. Brandon was the star of our 2020 season helping to grow programs across the board. Brandon created Get Away Game Night and helped make summer camp its best to date. Brandon will be entering his senior year at Ferris State University, where he is part of the Tennis Management Program. He is certified by the USPTA and PTR for Tennis, the PPR for Pickleball, and the PPTR for Paddle. Brandon is also the Assistant for the Ferris State men’s and women’s tennis teams. Brandon is a rising star that we can’t wait to welcome back. He aspires to one day become a Director of Racquets. We are thrilled that he continues his journey here with us! Jacob McGowan will be returning this summer from Hillsdale, Michigan. Jacob joined us last August to help extend our junior camps and adult programming. He is a senior at Ferris State University, where he is currently in the Professional Tennis Management Program. Additionally, Jacob serves in the Army Reserve as a Specialist (E-4). 12
February 2021
At Ferris State, Jacob is currently obtaining substantial training in professional and advanced teaching techniques, time management proficiency, and vast interpersonal skills. These accomplishments derive from a variety of components such as the Professional Tennis Management Program Student Association, on-court learning experience, various workshops, and courses that increase his industry knowledge. Jacob is a fantastic professional and an even better person. We are thrilled to welcome him back! Patricia (Patri) Martin is a junior at Ferris State University, studying Business Administration and minoring in International Business. She is from Madrid, Spain, where she started playing tennis at age seven. Her love to compete lead her to a successful junior career and ultimately to the women’s tennis team at Ferris State. Patri has been spending her summers on the courts teaching back home in Spain and is excited to share her knowledge and passion for tennis with us at BCC. We can’t wait to welcome her to our Club. As always, thank you for being the best part of BCC! ◆ See you on the courts,
