Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Staff Member of the Month MARCH

Rachel Barnes, Membership & Communications Coordinator When COVID-19 began impacting our lives, Rachel B immediately recognized an opportunity to reach out to our membership in a different way. She sprung into action right away by reaching out to departments at BCC to provide value to our members from home. Coordinating new content with departments that could be executed immediately, such as our Facebook LIVE fitness classes, Thursdays in the Garden, and Daily Challenges. She worked tirelessly to ensure her team was supported, and our members were introduced to new content, brought to them in a different way. We could not have introduced all of our new and exciting initiatives without her. Way to go Rachel!

Staff Member of the Month & Simple Truth Award APRIL

Jessica Klemm, Graphic Design Assistant Engaging with our members while the majority of our operations weren't permitted to open was challenging. Jess worked to have new, creative ideas pitched for member engagement regularly to the Communications Team. When Jess came up with the idea to have a BCC themed activity booklet, including word searches, crossword puzzles, coloring sheets, etc. She knew we had to act fast. Jess worked to establish a booklet for our members that would keep BCC in their hearts and minds even though we couldn't be together. Just one of the many creative and impactful ideas Jess has introduced to our membership. Additionally, Jess saw the lengths our culinary team was going to in order to provide whatever services we could to our membership. Jess wanted to support her team in whatever ways possible. In her free time, Jess began to crochet personal "ear savers" for the culinary team. She felt grateful for their hard work and wanted her teammates to be as comfortable as possible while working long hours in a mask. Jess embodies what it means to be a team player and always looks for ways to support her teammates whenever she can. Way to go Jess. We're so proud of you!

Exceptional Leadership Award Rachel Upton, Communications Manager No one could have predicted the immediate and prolonged impact COVID-19 would have on our lives. Communicating with our members swiftly, efficiently, and often as guidance from our state and local officials continued to change, and as new information came to light, required tenacity and dedication to the Club. Rachel Upton worked around the clock to ensure that our members were receiving the most up to date information as it was being announced. Additionally, Rachel continued to create materials for new initiatives, communications efforts, without fumbling in her continued daily responsibilities. Her leadership and work ethic set the tone for her team. Rachel allowed BCC to take action instantly through a fluid situation, and we cannot thank her enough.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE By Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper Golf courses are often judged on the quality of their putting greens because they play such a significant role in the game of golf. The slightest imperfection in a putting green can cause a golf ball to veer off its intended line and miss the hole. As such, our maintenance staff spends a great deal of energy and resources trying to produce smooth and consistent putting surfaces. However, their efforts can quickly be undermined when ball marks go unrepaired.

The Key to Better Greens The proper technique for repairing ball marks is quite simple and requires only a few seconds of effort: 1. Insert any pointed tool at a 45-degree angle behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center of the ball mark 2. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center 3. Afterward, tamp the area down with your putter Please follow the Golden Rule for divot recovery to ensure our fairways remain in top condition throughout the summer stress months: • A divot large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced • Every divot not replaced has no chance of survival. This is the best opportunity we have for recovery from divots since recovery from our seed mix will be non-existent until cooler nights and more favorable temperatures return in the fall months 10

July 2020

High heat and humidity has returned to the Mid-Atlantic area as we begin the dog days of summer. As such, with increased soil temperatures, the root systems on the cool season playing surfaces (bentgrass/ryegrass/tall fescue) naturally reduce, and the turf goes under stress rather rapidly under certain weather conditions. When this happens, to ensure our courses are in top condition, staff will apply light applications of water during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am-6:00pm) to ensure the survival of the turf under stress. If you encounter staff members on the courses while you are playing, please do not hit from the tee, or to the green, until they are completely out of the way. If a staff member is unaware of your presence, please alert them prior to playing your shot as the safety of our staff is and should be of utmost importance. We thank you for your patience, courtesy, and consideration for our staff at all times. On our larger irrigated areas, one would expect we would solely use the sprinklers from the automated irrigation systems to water the turf throughout the facility. In 1990, the irrigation system was installed on the West Course and in 2006 the water management system was installed on the East Course. Irrigation systems continue to become more sophisticated with the goal being to precisely manage water for maximum efficiency and create better playing conditions and healthier turf. Despite this, no irrigation system distributes water perfectly, nor can it account for all the surface irregularities, playing area contours (high versus low spots), or localized soil conditions and various microclimates. When it comes to turf under stress and applying the correct amount of water exactly where it is needed, there is no substitute for a trained staff member with a hose. While using sprinklers to water small stressed areas will keep our staff out of harm’s way, much of the area that is watered does not need it and this only wastes water and creates playability and turf health issues.

GROUNDS

Every year, around the middle week of April, we observe the arrival of the Purple Martin Scouts, who return to their nesting sites at Five Farms. These birds spend the summer nesting in the boxes that are erected throughout the East Course. In September, they leave and migrate to South America. These birds are beneficial since they eat a large number of insects (up to 1,500 per day) such as beetles, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, and flies.

Finally, July marks the return of insects hovering around the bunkers on both the East and West courses as well as the chipping green area. These are cicada killer wasps that burrow in the side of the bunker banks. While these wasps have stingers that are used to inject venom into the cicada, they are not aggressive to humans and are not viewed as a threat. â—†

Then SYCAMORE ANTHRACNOSE:

Then & Now

by Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture

Back in May, you might have noticed that Sycamores all around the Baltimore area looked like they had taken a sudden turn for the worse, just as their neighboring trees were starting to look really full and lush. This temporary defoliation is caused by Sycamore Anthracnose, a fungal infection that favors the cool, wet weather of spring. It is typical to see some symptoms every year. With unseasonably warm temperatures in March, followed by prolonged cool weather in April and late frosts in May, weather like we had this past spring exacerbated the situation. Though the symptoms are severe and can include shoot dieback, branch cankers, and necrotic spots on leaves, the disease rarely affects the long-term health of otherwise healthy, mature trees. For this reason, though the trees are temporarily unsightly, we do not feel it is worth investing in the preventative fungicide treatments that are available. Most years, the damage is not as drastic as it was this year. Even so, as temperatures warmed in June and rains abated, new leaves emerged to replace those that were lost. When you look around the courses now, the trees show almost no sign of what occurred just a few short months ago. â—†
