MEET BCC'S NEW DIRECTOR FOOD & BEVERAGE Please join us as we welcome Kate Reinhart as our new Director of Food & Beverage. Kate was born and raised in Baltimore and graduated from Towson High School. She then went on to Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, to pursue her love of the hospitality and culinary industry. During her time at Drexel, she received the George Perrier Scholarship and Internship, allowing her the opportunity to work at the famed Le Bec-Fin. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Culinary
Arts, she moved to Colorado, where she managed a bar and restaurant in Denver and worked as a Pastry Chef at a luxury ranch on the western slope. In 2014, she returned to Maryland and began her career in the private club industry as the Catering Director at The Country Club of Maryland where she has worked since. She has also been a member of the Club Management Association of America since 2014 and has been the recipient of the Jim Pappas Scholarship, Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship, and LaRocca Family Executive Scholarship, and is well on her way to earning her Certified Club Manager (CCM) certification. BCC MONTHLY MEMORY The Roland Park Tennis Courts In the early 1900s, our Baltimore Country Club's Roland Park grass tennis courts were considered among the finest in the country. Not long after joining the National Lawn Tennis Association in 1904, the Club hosted the first in a long series of qualifying matches for Davis Cup hopefuls. The Maryland State and Middle Atlantic Championships, which started in 1905 under a different name, were gaining in popularity at BCC, enjoying national and eventually international recognition. In 1939, the tournament had 90 players, including future great Jack Kramer who won the doubles that year. A year after that, women’s singles and doubles were added. ◆ If you have donations to the BCC archives, contact Assistant General Manager Michael Nyerges at mnyerges@bcc1898.com. 3

Finding Balance
IN THE GOLF SWING By BCC Personal Coach Ryan Hartsfield, TPI, RYT 200 In the modern game of golf, we often hear how important it is to train the body for power to generate as much clubhead speed as possible. Although power is critical to generating clubhead speed, it is greatly diminished and possibly negated entirely without proper balance throughout the golf swing sequence. Homer Kelley lists balance as the second of three essentials to the perfect golf swing in his book The Golfing Machine. Homer Kelley’s 3 Essentials to a Perfect Golf Swing 1. A Stationary Head (notice how he does not say “keep your head down”) 2. Balance 3. Rhythm Mr. Kelley goes on to state, “In every athletic activity, success seems to be unquestionably proportional to the player’s sense of balance and force—whether innate or acquired. Off-balance force is notoriously erratic.” In other words, we lose force and consistency in the golf swing without proper balance. If you struggle with balance in your golf swing, you might experience some of the following issues: 1. The inability to successfully transfer your weight into the lead leg (turning through the golf ball) 2. Hitting the golf ball “thin” (contacting the golf ball with the leading edge of the club) or “fat” (contact with the ground behind the golf ball) 3. Lack of distance even after good contact with the golf ball Balance is such an important aspect of the golf swing that Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) includes a single-leg balance test as one of the 16 points of assessment in the TPI Physical Golf Screen. If you are ready to play more enjoyable golf this year, come see us in the Fitness Center for a TPI Physical Golf Screen. Our TPI-certified Personal Coaches can help you identify and correct areas of weakness in the body through customized exercise and joint golf performance programs with our Golf Professionals. Remember, in order to get better, don’t guess, assess! ◆ For more information on golf fitness training or getting your TPI Physical Golf Screen, contact Ryan Hartsfield at rhartsfield@bcc1898.com.

FIT & WELL AT HOME:
Glutes & IT Band Stretch by Reformer Pilates Instructor Kristin Weyant
On an exercise mat, lie face up with your knees bent and feet flat. Raise your left foot to the ceiling and grab onto the back of your knee. Then, pull your foot toward your chest, turning the shin to the side, so it is almost perpendicular to your body. Hold the stretch for at least 20 seconds, then repeat on the opposite leg.

TIPS from the
PRO How to Prevent the Dreaded Chunk By Joanna Coe, Director of Instruction
The dreaded chunk shot might be one of the most embarrassing misses in the game of golf. And why does it have to happen after bombing a tee shot right down the middle? If you struggle with “the chunks,” the following tips might be exactly what you need to get back on track! ◆
1
2

4
Ensure you are shifting your weight and rotating into your lead leg (left leg for the right-handed player). You should feel 95% of your bodyweight on your lead leg when you finish your golf swing. Some players struggle to transfer their weight to lift the ball off the ground by falling backward. Trust the loft on the club. Drive, shift, and rotate into the lead leg.
You will rarely find yourself with a level, perfect lie when you play golf. A downhill lie can certainly sneak up on you if you're not looking for it. Be sure to walk around your golf ball and assess your lie. For a downhill lie, play the ball slightly back in your stance, match your shoulders with the slope, and increase pressure on your lead foot. The ball will launch lower and roll more. Swing down the hill and never lean backward on a downhill lie!
Make sure you hinge from the hips, and your arms are hanging underneath your shoulders. If you are crowding the ball, your arms don't have enough room to hang and swing around your body, causing a chunk.
If the ball position is too far forward with wedges or irons, you could contact the ground first. You can easily check this by taking a practice swing and seeing where the club hits the ground relative to your feet. The club should hit the ground in the middle of your stance with an iron; ideally, the lowest point of your swing should be on the target side of the ball.

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE By Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper We had beautiful weather this spring with cool temperatures and low humidity. Unfortunately, this comes to an end with the return of high heat and humidity to the Mid-Atlantic area. Traditionally, the high heat arrives around the July 4th holiday, and we move into the “dog days” of summer. With increased soil temperatures, the root systems on the coolseason playing surfaces (bentgrass, ryegrass, tall fescue) naturally reduce. The turf goes under stress rather rapidly under certain weather conditions. When this happens, to ensure our courses are in top condition, our staff will apply light applications of water during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am to 6:00pm) to ensure the survival of the turf under stress. If you encounter staff members on the courses while playing, please do not hit from the tee or to the green until they are completely out of the way. If a staff member is unaware of your presence, please alert them before playing your shot, as the safety of our staff is of utmost importance. We thank you for your patience, courtesy, and consideration of our team. On our larger irrigated areas, one would expect that we would solely use the sprinklers from the automated irrigation systems to water the turf throughout the facility. In 1990, the irrigation system was installed on the West
MONDAY COURSE CLOSURES To ensure the courses are in the best possible condition for the fall golfing season, we will be closing both the East and West courses on Mondays beginning Monday, July 19 through Monday, September 6, and reopen for play on the East Course on Tuesday, September 7.
10
July 2021
Course, and in 2006, the water management system was installed on the East. Irrigation systems continue to become more sophisticated, with the goal being to precisely manage water for maximum efficiency and create better playing conditions and healthier turf. Despite this, no irrigation system distributes water perfectly, nor can it account for all the surface irregularities, playing area contours (high versus low spots), or localized soil conditions and various microclimates. When it comes to turf under stress and applying the correct amount of water exactly where it is needed, there is no substitute for a trained staff member with a hose. While using sprinklers to water small stressed areas will keep our staff out of harm’s way, much of the area that is watered does not need it, and this only wastes water and creates playability and turf health issues.
Lightning Safety Our Five Farms campus is equipped with a Total Lightning Detection system that alerts members, guests, and staff of advancing severe weather. As the device senses both in-cloud (intracloud) and cloud-to-ground lightning at a radius of 10 miles of Five Farms, the siren system will activate automatically. After a 15-minute time frame of sensing no further lightning strikes, the system will give an all-clear signal for resumption of activity. There are two different, distinctive tones used in this process:
• One long 15-second horn blast means lightning has been detected—seek shelter (in the clubhouse or your vehicle) • Three short five-second horn blast means all clear, it is safe to resume activities
Posters detailing this system are located outside the Golf House and in the Gentlemen's and Ladies' Locker Rooms. ◆
Did You Know? As you play the East Course, you may have noticed an eight-inch bronze plate on select tee boxes inscribed with A.W.T. These are the initials of course architect A.W. Tillinghast and mark the original yardage of each hole from 1926.
GROUNDS
The FIRST step towards a long-term solution DRIVING RANGE RENOVATION On Monday, July 19, our Grounds Team will begin renovating the Practice Facilities as the Club makes strides to meet our membership’s current and long-term needs. While these renovations will significantly improve our current offerings, it is not a permanent solution. A long-term solution will still need to be implemented to resolve the main problem areas: size, safety, and instruction space. However, this is a reasonable approach that serves as a temporary solution. ◆
CLOSURES & RESTRICTIONS Monday, July 19―Sunday, August 1 • The Front Range tees (near the Golf House) are closed • The Back Range is open from the mats only (250-yard shots maximum) Monday, August 2―Thursday, August 19 • The Driving Range is closed to repair the Range field and install target greens near Back Range tees Friday, August 20―Friday, August 27 • Driving Range tees are open on both ends from the grass • Balls will be hand-picked to allow the sod to knit and establish. The Range is closed from 2:00pm-3:00pm and 6:30pm-dusk for hand-picking Saturday, August 28 • Normal operations to resume
ENHANCEMENTS • The existing tee by the Golf House will be lowered and the size will be increased by over 40% • We will increase the length of the all-weather teeing surface at the back of the tee from 140 ft to nearly 190 ft. This will allow for an additional five hitting stations • On the Range field, we are repairing the existing field and maximizing the width to create a polo-like field with poles to hit to • On the Back Range tee, we are shifting the practice bunker to the right where current uneven lie area is located and expanding the existing tee further to the right by 47 ft • The teaching tee will be stripped, laser graded, and resodded with Tahoma bermudagrass • On the Back Range, we will be creating an enhanced approach shot experience with the addition of three target greens 11
